POWERBALL® players will soon get the chance to start the week in a winning way with a new Monday night drawing! The new Monday drawing will join the lineup of Powerball drawings, currently held on Wednesday and Saturday, on Aug. 23 at 9:59 p.m. CT.

The Powerball Product Group anticipates adding the Monday drawing will result in larger, faster-growing jackpots. The group also expects to see an increase in the number of cash prizes and jackpots awarded on an annual basis. Adding a third drawing will not change the Powerball game odds or set cash prizes. Players will continue to choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. Powerball to launch 3rd drawing on Monday nights

The Willie Nelson &amp; Family show that was scheduled for Aug. 17 in the Stiefel Theatre has been postponed.

Jane Gates, Stiefel executive director, announced this morning that "due to unforeseen circumstances, this show will be postponed until 2022."

All tickets already sold will be honored at for the new show, which will be announced at a later date.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Ellis County's annual Duck Derby fundraiser is set to return this year on Wednesday, once again filling the Hays Aquatic Park, 300 Main, with plastic ducks for a good cause.

Festivities are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

"We have over 5,000 ducks that we have numbered, and when people adopt ducks, they are assigned numbers, and then we take these ducks to the Hays Aquatic Park...and we will dump them down the slide," said Jennie Bates, Big Brothers Big Sisters Northwest Kansas executive director.

From there, the ducks will race around the lazy river, she said.

Two heats of the ducks with a championship race to determine the winners.

"The first ten ducks that come around into our catcher that we have, are our winners," Bates said.

The grand prize has been a vehicle in previous years, but with the shortage of supply, this year, $10,000 has been substituted, provided by event sponsors.

Ducks can be purchased online, the Big Brothers Big Sisters office located in the Chesnut Building, 1200 Main, or at Bank of Hays,&nbsp;1000 West 27th, Eagle Radio, 2300 Hall, Hays Hobby Shop,&nbsp;1905 General Custer and the Chelsy Proehl Farmers Insurance Agency,&nbsp;1012 Main.

Ducks are $5 each individually, 6 for $25, 12 for $50 and 25 for $100.

Along with the Duck Derby, a separate event for children the Duck Dash features youth-themed prizes.

"We give away about 30 prizes for the Duck Dash," Bates said, including the grand prize of a six-hour inflatable rental.

Ducks for the Dash are $2 each and children will be able to take a duck with them.

"It's pretty amazing to see it all go on," Bates said.

And about 10 boats will also be participating in the Sink of Sail Cardboard Regatta, she said, named after last year's winner, the High Plains Baptist Church.

During that event, groups will race boats for one or two people made from cardboard and duck tape.

"It's a lot of fun to watch those," Bates said. "And it's a race. It's to see who is going to be the fastest and win the naming rights for next year's race."

While the event itself is a fun way for the community to gather together, the Duck Derby is a primary way Big Brothers Big Sisters receives operating funds for the year, sustaining the organization's work to connect children with adults in a positive way.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization," Bates said.&nbsp;

As a non-profit, the groups work to connect children with adult mentors.

"We match children in our community who are needing some extra support, who are facing different kinds of adversities in their lives, and we pair them with an adult mentor that meets with them one-on-one two to four times a month," Bates said.

In Ellis County, there are currently 135 matches, she said.

"We have to do events and fundraisers to help support the program," Bates said. "The Duck Derby helps do that."

"We always have a need for volunteers," Bates said. "Right now, we have about 30 kids who are needing a volunteer here in Ellis County, most of them being little brothers. So, we definitely have a need for male volunteers."

She said children could also be matched with a couple or a family.

But she said without events like the Duck Derby and the support from the community, the organization would not be able to make those connections.

"It's amazing how much Big Brothers Big Sisters is supported through this," she said.

<a href="https://help4abuse.org/">Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services</a> is seeking local bars to participate in the Safe Bars Alliance.

The free Safe Bars training helps bar staff to recognize signs of sexual harassment or predatory behavior, said Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director.

Some of those behaviors staff might notice could be unwanted advances, someone who did not come with a person following him or her outside of the establishment, and persistence after someone says "no" to advances.

Safe Bars trains bystanders on how to intervene safely without putting the person intervening at risk.

The training takes about an hour. Participating bars receive free posters and other promotional items.

At least 50 percent of sexual assaults are associated with alcohol use, according to several published research studies. Alcohol has especially been shown as a factor in sexual assaults among college students.

Options staff completed a three-day training with the national Safe Bars Alliance Association in November. However, no local bars or restaurants have yet signed up for the training.

Hecker said the pandemic and staff shortages are partially to blame for a slow program launch.

Options covers an 18-county region in northwest Kansas. The Safe Bar Alliance pilot program will be launched in cities that have colleges, including Hays, Colby and Goodland.

"We know once college starts, we are going to see an uptick, so we are trying to get in with the bar owners and provide that training," Hecker said. ..."We know bar owners don't want those things happening in their bars."

Alcohol does not cause sexual assault, rapist do, Hecker said. However, sexual predators often use alcohol as a weapon or tool to make their victims vulnerable, she said.&nbsp;

"If we can empower the people who own the bars and the people who work in the bars on how to keep their bar staff safe, spot predatory behavior and how to safely intervene," Hecker said, "that makes our community all the more safe."

Hecker said she believes patrons will appreciate bars that have staff who have been trained to watch for predatory behavior and how to respond to it safely.

Bar or restaurant owners or managers who would like to participate in the program can call Options at 785-625-4202 to sign up for the training. Hecker said Options can be flexible in setting a time and date for the training.

The Heartland Community Foundation is hosting a Strategic Doing event in August, just for local teenagers.

The aim is to engage area high schoolers and find out what they think would make local communities even stronger. Teenagers notice things adults and community leaders don’t notice, and Heartland wants to hear their big ideas.&nbsp;

The Ellis County Teen Talkback will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Aug. 11&nbsp;at the Hays Public Library in the upstairs young adult room. Pizza and soda will be served. All teens who attend will be entered into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card.&nbsp;

High schoolers from Hays High, Ellis High, Victoria High, Thomas More Prep-Marian, or those who are home schooled are invited to attend and share their thoughts.

The Strategic Doing aspect will encourage collaboration and action steps, if warranted, but the key objective is to gather feedback and opinion about the strengths and gaps in local community. The feedback gathered will be shared with community leaders and applicable organizations.

Strategic Doing events are supported by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation in all 26 northwest Kansas counties and facilitated by community foundations. Participation in the Ellis County Teen Talkback would be an activity to include on students' resume or in scholarship applications.&nbsp;

“We know teenagers are busy, but we’re hoping they can set aside a little bit of time to come and tell us what they’d like to see in Ellis County. They can dream big – any idea is welcome. We just want to hear from them,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director at the Heartland Community Foundation. “We hope to engage teenagers more regularly at the Heartland Community Foundation.”&nbsp;

Meitner also noted some teenagers are already familiar with the Heartland Community Foundation’s grant process. The foundation awarded more than $5,000 last fall to a teenager who applied for an audio-visual project. It also awarded more than $17,000 to two teen groups in its spring cycle for a project in Ellis County and one in Trego County.&nbsp;

🎙Post Podcast: Imagine Ellis County initiative looks at future of the area

The art was about the experience and the space&nbsp;Wednesday night at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art.

Crystal Hammerschmidt, FHSU graduate student, stepped out of her two-dimensional world of printmaking this summer to create a greenhouse for her "What We Keep Inside" installation.

Nine&nbsp;Fort Hays State University student artists exhibited art installations from a summer workshop at the gallery for one night only.

Hammerschmidt's space included live plants, marbles, crystals, rocks,&nbsp;a dish of chocolates to please your taste buds and a comfy chair covered by a crocheted afghan in which to relax.

"You can enter the greenhouse, which is all about creating a safe space, a comfortable space. You think about internalizing and finding some peace and balance," she said.

The live plants are from Hammerschmidt's own "home jungle."&nbsp;

"They have become a sense of home and place for me," she said of the plants. "They also represent people. Objects within this space hold memory for me. The plants represent for me a place or people or an event or chapter in my life."

She said the work was about engaging the audience and talking about time and memory.

"Earlier today someone told me, 'It reminds me of my aunt's back porch with all of her plants and her chair. She'd sit back there and smoke.' 

"I said, 'You connected to a memory, and that is what this space is about is connecting with those happy memories — those peaceful memories and giving yourself that place to relax, let things go and figure out what is important,'"&nbsp;Hammerschmidt said.

Kathy Robb, FHSU graduate student in art, created a mixed media sculpture that included a fawn titled "Look Dad an Antler." She said it will be a preview of a larger piece that will be part of her master's thesis exhibit in January.

She says the sculpture depicts a fawn that is out with its father and sees a previously shed antler stuck in a tree. The fawn leans down as if he he trying on the antler.&nbsp;

Robb of Kansas City said the piece is meant to be symbolic of human's quest for their parents' approval.&nbsp;

Robb said she has felt a special kinship with animals since she was a young child and was attacked by a pedophile who exposed himself to her.

Like the fawn, she became very fearful of people, as well as struggled to gain her mother's acceptance, Robb said.

Bethany Panhorst, FHSU graduate student in art from Savannah, Ga., created an installation titled "Waiting for Morning," which combined a partially buried ceramic body in dirt and a video of a sunrise.

"I wanted to remind the viewer of death," she said. "In art there is this term, memento mori, which is a tradition of reminding the viewer that they, like everyone else, will die.

&nbsp;"I wanted to create a sense of humility or reverence or urgency, even maybe."

The sun coming up is meant to be a hopeful metaphor, she said. 

She said she gleans many of her ideas from Biblical passages. The last section of Isaiah references things being restored and uses metaphors of light and the morning.

Proverbs says righteousness shines brighter and brighter until noon day. Psalm 1:30 talks about waiting for the morning, which is used figuratively to discuss redemption. 

"In Christianity, there is this idea of resurrection when the soul, which is separated from the body at death, is reunited with the body,"&nbsp;Panhorst said. "I'm trying to talk about that, not only that happening, but the waiting for that and the expectation of that."

Linda Ganstrom, FHSU art professor, taught the summer art installation workshop.

The class also did installations at Castle Rock and on campus. For these art pieces, the students had to create pieces that interacted with the environment.

The students worked the last two-weeks of the four-week class on their pieces that were displayed Wednesday night.

"It starts off usually with an art object, but then it starts to interact with the wall and the floor that is maybe a little more conscious than just hanging a painting on the wall or setting a pedestal on the floor and setting an object on there," she said.

She said some of the pieces were very serious and other more light-hearted, but they all reflected the artists' styles and passions.

"We are hopping to create an experience for the viewer, so when they leave, they have a strong memory of the piece," she said. "Maybe in some way it changes them their life view."

Updated 2:30 p.m. Sunday to correct the name of "Look Dad an Antler."

The HaysMed Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center is celebrating 10 years of providing highly specialized wound care treatment for difficult, complicated or atypical wounds.

This includes diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, wounds with infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps and wounds that have not healed within 30 days.

The center opened on July 11, 2011 and had been providing services to patients from all areas of western Kansas.&nbsp; The center also offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of their treatment procedures for qualifying wounds.

The quality outcomes over the last 10 years include 2,970 patients treated, 3,425 total wounds treated, and 3,000 total wounds healed.&nbsp; This represents an 85 percent cure rate for wounds, which is the above the national cure rate of 73.96 percent.

The staff of 12 at the center includes three physicians, one APRN and one PA.&nbsp; Services are available both at HaysMed and as outreach at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

“We are excited to be celebrating this milestone at the Wound and Hyperbaric Center here in Hays,”&nbsp; said Todd Walburn, nursing supervisor of the center. “For 10 years the people of western Kansas has benefited from the expert care they have received at our center.”

The event will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by a presentation highlighting rural Kansas from Huck Boyd Institute Director Ron Wilson. The evening also will include a raffle.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. In the past the foundation has raised private donations to fund the exterior of the 2004 remodel, and most recently, the foundation contributed to the purchase of the bookmobile and to the project to remodel the library.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Tickets are available beginning Monday. They cost $30 and can be purchased at the library or online at <a href="http://hayslibrary.org/event">hayslibrary.org/event</a>. Fundraiser to benefit Hays Public Library Foundation

Following the Ellis County Fair, we always invite the champions to share their prize-winning recipes.

The Best Bread award was won by Mary Elizabeth (Lizzy) Vajnar. Next week the Best Cookie by Logan Leiker will be featured. Congratulations to both of these 4-H members on their hard work in the 4-H foods project.

Add the following (in order listed) into bread machine pan: · ¾ cup + 2 TB of 80 degrees F water · 1 TB vegetable oil · 1 TB sugar · 1 tsp salt · 2 ¼ cup bread flour · 1 ½ tsp active dry yeast (add to small indention in flour)

Program bread machine for a French Course (For Breadman Pro the French Course is 5); press start.

After bread machine has kneaded twice (25 minutes), rose twice (70 minutes), pull dough from the machine. Form dough into loaf. (Press into 12 in. x 8 in. rectangle. Roll to form loaf. Pinch ends under.)

Cover with oiled plastic wrap and let rise in warm place till doubled (60 minutes).

Combine 1 TB water and egg-white. Brush with pastry brush over top of loaf.

Decorate with sunflower kernels on top of loaf and slice top of loaf diagonally 3-4 times.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and coat with melted butter.

Unruh: 2021 best bread

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Saturday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Scott A. Harkness, 52, Larned, was eastbound on M Road on half mile west of Larned.

The driver lost control of the motorcycle and laid the vehicle down in the eastbound lane.&nbsp;

EMS transported Harkness to the hospital in Larned. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

🎙Post Podcast: Cottonwood Extension District intern recounts her summer experience

The descendants of the settlers of Nicodemus celebrated Friday the dedication of a 35-mile trail that marked the route their ancestors walked from the Ellis train depot to their new settlement.

Nicodemus is the only remaining African-American farming community west of the Mississippi. About 380 black settlers, most recently freed slaves, arrived from Kentucky at Ellis by rail in fall 1877.

Ellis was the last stop by rail before the black settlers embarked on foot to their new settlement. The route lacked roads, and the settlers were forced to ford the Saline River.

A sign marking the beginning of the trail and honoring the Nicodemus settlers was dedicated Friday in Ellis.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/d7080c2c-7a7d-418b-9511-7356468a3353">The first sign&nbsp;on the trail was dedicated at the Walz homestead last year.&nbsp;</a>The homestead is 10 miles north of Ellis on the Saline River. Other markers have been added since then.

A group of Nicodemus descendants made a brief visit at the Ellis Railroad museum and boarded buses to tour markers at other key sites along the trail.&nbsp;

The tour ended in Nicodemus, where the <a href="https://www.nicodemushomecoming.org/">143rd emancipation</a> is being celebrated through Sunday.

Gov. Laura Kelly will be speaking at 1 p.m. at the&nbsp;AME Methodist Church Museum dedication as part of the event.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Signs of a possible bloom include if there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

 <li>Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.</li><li>Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.</li><li>Water contact should be avoided.</li><li>Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.</li><li>Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.</li><li>If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.</li><li>Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.</li>
 </ul>A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:<ul>
 <li>Signage will be posted at all public access locations.</li><li>Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.</li><li>Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.</li><li>Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.</li><li>Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid</li>
