	In a short season, it’s important to get off to a fast start. For the Hays Larks, getting their pitching sorted out will be key.

	Hays is 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League as the team embarks on a four-game Colorado road trip. The Larks will play two league games with the Colorado Roughnecks starting Thursday, followed by a pair of nonleague games at the Boulder Collegians. Hays is a half-game out of first place in the league race; the Fort Collins Foxes are 7-2 in the RMBL.

After the trip to Colorado, the Larks will play nonleague games at the Kansas Cannons and Junction City Brigade before returning to Hays July 10 to play the Foxes to start a 14-game homestand to end the regular season.

“It’s hard to make up ground when it’s a short season,” Larks manager Frank Leo said. “We’ve been fortunate to juggle our pitching staff; we don’t have great depth. We’ve been able to get the matchups we want in each of the games.”

The Larks were short on pitching even before the season started. Leo lost three good arms, two shut down by their college coaches and another who received a good career opportunity. Hays then lost right-hander Corey Bright last week after he was shut down for the summer by his college coach.

“If we had them on our current staff, we would have a very well-rounded pitching staff,” Leo said.

“Two of them were left-handed, and that really changed things,” said longtime Larks pitching coach Keith Harper.

Leo was able to add an arm a few days ago, picking up right-hander Derek Decolati, who both started and pitched in relief for South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College, and who will pitch for Nevada next season.

The Larks’ rotation is led by right-hander Wyatt Divis, in Hays for his fourth summer. Divis is 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA and is the designated hitter when he is not on the mound. Left-hander Jake Fitzgibbons, a newcomer from Tennessee, won his first decision Saturday. Leo also is looking at right-handers Luuk ter Beek and Jackson Blue in starting roles, and right-hander Hunter Parker pitched five scoreless innings in his last start.

“He just knows how to win,” Harper said of Divis. “He’s going to keep you in every game. He just knows how to hit, how to pitch. He’s a special guy.”

Fitzgibbons gives the Larks a quality arm from the left side.

“He’s a special kid,” Harper said. “He’s not very big, but he can let it go. You don’t get one of those kind of guys very often.”

The bullpen has right-hander Jose Velazquez in a setup role and right-hander Cade Brown to close out games. Leo also is looking to build up Trevor Munsch for a left-handed option in relief. Harper said Decolati also will likely pitch out of the ’pen.

“Cade and Jose will handle the bulk of our late innings,” Leo said.

The Larks also look to have another arm for the postseason. Right-hander Patrick Cooper, a standout starting pitcher for the team from 2008-10, was back for the 75th anniversary weekend. After talking with Leo and Harper, he hopes to join the team for the postseason.

“I do know Patrick Cooper is going to join us for the World Series,” Leo said. “Hopefully, we get to the World Series.

“That will be a very good arm,” he added. “We can survive the summer, I know we can pick up Patrick.”

Harper said Cooper, who previously pitched for the Larks at the World Series, could add depth to the bullpen.

“Just having an experienced guy is pretty good,” Harper said.

Harper said he will set his pitching up for the league race down the stretch.

“We’ve just got to put it all together in July, make that run against the league opponents,” he said. “As long as we win three out of four against everybody, nobody can catch us.”

COLBY — The "Sounds of Freedom," a 17-member music performance team within the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division Band of the Kansas Army&nbsp;<a>National Guard</a>&nbsp;will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, in Colby's Fike Park. The show includes patriotic selections, marches, and other popular music.

Under the command of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jim Walker, the band is comprised of citizen-soldiers who contribute skills, talents, and experiences to the unit and to the Kansas Army National Guard. Like all Guard units, the band meets one weekend a month and 15 days during the summer to rehearse and fulfill military training requirements.

As musical ambassadors, the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division Band represents the governor at civilian and military functions throughout Kansas, performing at parades, concerts, and political inaugurations. In addition to Colby, the summer concert tour includes Pratt, Dodge City, Jetmore, Hutchinson, Hoisington, Larned, Logan, Greensburg, Fort Hays State University, Wakeeney, Stockton, Great Bend and Wichita.

There is no admission charge. Guests are invited to take a lawn chair or blanket.

National Guard band will perform in Colby

Fort Hays State University exists to improve lives. I see this statement in action. Every. Single. Day. I love learning about each individual life in our mosaic of impact – individuals such as new alumnus Anthony Ventura.

Anthony, a May graduate, is a truly incredible person who will indeed make a difference in our world. He graduated in three years with a Bachelor of Science in Biology (health profession) and a minor in chemistry. He speaks two languages proficiently, a third with working proficiency, and a fourth with elementary proficiency.

Anthony is clearly ambitious. His life philosophy of “work smart and harder” has successfully guided him. His favorite quote: “Let him who would move the world first move himself.” (Socrates)&nbsp;

Anthony was born in the Philippines, grew up in Los Angeles, California, then moved to Plainville, Kansas, when he was 13. After graduating from Plainville High School in 2018, he came to FHSU to participate in collegiate athletics on the Tiger track and field team.

Many of our student-athletes take athletics seriously at a young age, and many are inspired by their fathers. Anthony was no different. His dad was a collegiate athlete and later became a doctor.

“I am very thankful to God and my family,” Anthony said. “My mom, stepdad, late father, and sisters are a big part of my life that I truly value. My role models are my mom, stepdad, and late father, who gave me a lot of wisdom and discipline. Most importantly, they showed me love.”

While Anthony came to FHSU to compete in track, he soon found so many other opportunities to pursue. And pursue them he did.

Participation in the Kansas Startup competition – an event designed for entrepreneurs to meet, share ideas, and launch new businesses – exposed Anthony to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. His team won the 2020 Kansas Startup with the creation of a mental health app and was a finalist for this spring’s Faulkner Challenge, a business plan competition. The Faulkner Challenge also enabled Anthony to establish professional connections that will help in his graduate study and the professional life that awaits him.&nbsp; &nbsp;

“My passion for entrepreneurship is rooted in the idea of innovating and helping others,” he said. “Entrepreneurship shows a metaphorical brick wall of challenges. That brick wall has pushed me to be creative and learn to move forward.”

One of the many things Anthony values about FHSU is the opportunity for meaningful undergraduate research. Anthony credits Dr. Nicholas Stewart as a scholar-mentor who helped him conduct genetic research that is being reviewed by the Genome Education Project for publication.

During the pandemic, Anthony wanted to find a way to improve mental and physical health on campus. So, he founded the American Healthy Heart student organization at FHSU to advance mental and physical health among students with underlying health challenges. The group considers the definition of “heart” to include a holistic and integrative approach.

Club members enjoyed hearing from a wide variety of speakers, including Charles Camarda, an American engineer and a NASA astronaut. Anthony has a growing interest in space and the sustainability of the earth, and he thoroughly enjoyed hearing Camarda speak about the Columbia disaster, life in space, and what awaits in our exploration of Mars.&nbsp;

While completing a bachelor’s degree in three years, serving on the Student Government Association, and participating in numerous campus organizations, Anthony also served as the music coordinator for Harvest Christian Church. Additionally, he worked at Hays Medical Center as a telemetry technician and coded app games for the digital Apple App Store.&nbsp;

It’s no wonder this very talented, hard-working, ambitious, young man was trying to decide which graduate program to enter – Boston University, MIT, Columbia, or the University of Oklahoma – and which program to study (business, biology, or engineering). Ultimately, he chose Oklahoma, where he can combine a dual program of Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Industrial and System Engineering.

Anthony fully embraces his mantra, “Be fearless,” while chasing his goals. But I have no doubt this Tiger will succeed and make a lasting impact on his community – and our world.

MASON: Ventura took full advantage of FHSU opportunities

LARNED – Authorities 
are looking for a man who escaped from the Larned State Hospital 
Wednesday morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Freeman Colt walked out of the&nbsp;Sexual 
Predator&nbsp;Treatment Program&nbsp;shortly after 7 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Colt&nbsp;is 
described as a white male, 5’ 7”, weighing 200 pounds with blue eyes and
 short brown hair.&nbsp;He has a tattoo of a heart with the letters BH on his
 left arm.&nbsp;He was last seen at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday walking 
northbound&nbsp;from the Kwik Shop on Broadway. He was wearing a gray long 
sleeve shirt, black pants and a dark face mask. He possibly has an ID 
badge with the name C. Jones, and he may be in possession of a 
cellphone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Authorities say Colt should be considered dangerous. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.&nbsp;

Sexual predator escapes from Larned State Hospital 

Three-day weather outlook

One thing about living in Kansas is if you don’t like to current weather, don’t worry, because it will change to the other extreme, and sometimes that can happen quickly. Just a couple of weeks ago we were struggling to get fall crops planted because of the wet conditions. Now we are hoping that the hot and dry conditions we are currently experiencing isn’t a trend that will last through the summer. Thankfully, we do have some decent sub-soil moisture conditions that will keep the fall crops going through this dry period.

Given the current dry conditions you may think that the last thing I would be wanting to talk about is planting cover crops. But cover crops can provide as many benefits, especially in fallow systems where there will not be a cash crop planted until next spring. These cropping systems only capture and store about 15 to 25% of the moisture received during the fallow period and the rest is just lost to evaporation, runoff and deep percolation.

Cover crops will use some soil moisture like any other living growing plant, including weeds. But a cover crop, that is properly designed with the right species in the mix, and planted and terminated timely, can mitigate the soil moisture losses during the fallow period. So, when the rains do come, we can capture and store more water in the soil then we would of without the cover crop.

I typically I like to get a cover crop established in wheat stubble within a day or two after harvest. It’s been my experience that there is usually enough moisture near the soil surface for the seeds to germinate and emerge because the soil surface is shaded by the mature wheat. But once the wheat is harvested the moisture evaporates quickly. Another option is to delay the cover crop planting later into the summer after a rain or two. Typically, a flush of weeds and volunteer wheat has come up by that time, which can be terminated before planting to cover crop.

I would stick with predominately low water use species in the mix. Millets work well in this situation. They are shallow rooted and grow and mature quickly and very drought tolerant once established. Seed costs is reasonable because the seed is small and just a few pounds is all that is needed in a mix. Because of the small seed size planting depth should be no more then about an inch deep. I would also add a small amount deep rooted species like sunflowers turnips or radishes. They can really help with breaking compaction layers that almost all cropped fields have. 

Some of these species can also be great habitat for beneficial insects and pollinators. Adding a legume, like sunn hemp can also be beneficial in the mix if allowed to grow long enough the nodulate and fix nitrogen. If the planting is delayed until mid-August,&nbsp;oats could be added to the mix. Oats really help feed the soil biology that is critical to building and maintaining soil aggregates, which in turn increases soil porosity.

Most summer planted cover mixes will frost terminate once temperatures get cold enough in the fall. But if dry conditions persist through late summer it may be appropriate to terminate the cover early so it doesn’t continue to use moisture that may be needed for the next cash crop. This is really a judgement call based on current conditions at the time and long-term weather forecasts.

If you used an herbicide in the growing wheat herbicide carryover could be a concern. Many post wheat herbicides provide long term residual weed control and have long plant back restrictions. These herbicides could inhibit the germination and growth of many cover crop species. Always check your herbicide label and if in doubt consult with your supplier or crop advisor.

The Risk Management Agency (RMA) has recently adjusted the crop insurance provisions regarding cover crops and termination guidelines, easing many of the prior restrictions. I would suggest that you contact your crop insurance agent before planting the cover crop to make sure you are meeting all the insurance requirements.

But if dry conditions persist through late summer it may be appropriate to terminate the cover early so it doesn’t continue to use moisture that may be needed for the next cash crop. This is really a judgement call based on current conditions at the time and long-term weather forecasts.If you used an herbicide in the growing wheat herbicide carryover could be a concern. Many post wheat herbicides provide long term residual weed control and have long plant back restrictions. These herbicides could inhibit the germination and growth of many cover crop species. Always check your herbicide label and if in doubt consult with your supplier or crop advisor.The Risk Management Agency (RMA) has recently adjusted the crop insurance provisions regarding cover crops and termination guidelines, easing many of the prior restrictions. This advisory affects residents located South of 140 Road and East of M Road. This advisory does not include the community of Smith Center and is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on June 30 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has restricted traffic to one lane on the bridge over the Union Pacific railroad on U.S. 40 in Wallace County for emergency repairs. The bridge is located approximately 7 miles east of Sharon Springs.

The Hays school board will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the Rockwell Administration conference room to approve its annual contract with the teacher's union.

The contract, which includes raises for teachers, was approved 159-0 by the union.

"We had  very collaborative negotiations that really benefited everyone," Superintendent Ron Wilson said.

The contract adds $1,200 to each cell of the salary schedule and allows for vertical and horizontal movement on the schedule. This equals about a 3.35 percent raise.

One contract day has been added.&nbsp;$300 will be added to each cell of the salary schedule as compensation for this added day.

&nbsp;0.5 percent will be added to each supplemental salary non-athletics and athletics supplemental schedule.

The curriculum work hourly rate will increase from $15 to $22.50.

Teachers who serve on Building Leadership Teams will receive a stipend of $340.

An early retirement/resignation bonus will be awarded to teachers who submit their resignations as follows: On or before Dec. 1 — $1,000 On or before Jan. 1&nbsp; — $500

 <li>Change to sick leave contract language so that all sick leave will be granted on the first day of a continuing contract. If a staff member is on paid leave or FMLA protected leave status, all sick leave will be awarded without proration.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>Adding six early release days to the contract, which will eliminate the need to vote on approving&nbsp;these each year.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>In cases of termination or non-renewal of a teacher contract, teachers will be able to have a representative present with them during an executive session if they choose to respond to the school board.</li>

"Here
 in Kansas, we're looking at $2.87 on average," said Shawn Steward with 
AAA Kansas. "That's up about four cents in the past week, but still, as 
we usually are, we're 10th cheapest in the nation."

Don't plan on any relief in the near future, either.

"The
 expectation is that gas prices are going to stay high and maybe see 
some additional increases throughout the summer, because of the demand 
out there," Steward said. "The expectation is that crude oil prices will
 stay high."

The last time the national average was over $3 a gallon for Independence Day was in 2014.

Memorial services have been planned for July 10 for two former Hoisington residents who were murdered in Houston on June 20. Rita Joanne Lillard, 64, and her daughter Virginia Lillian Lillard, 39, died in what Houston police are calling an incident of domestic violence. Lewis Trinidad Nunez, 46, has been charged&nbsp;as a suspect in the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Houston Assistant Police Chief Yasar&nbsp;Bashir said&nbsp;police&nbsp;officers were called&nbsp;to a Houston apartment following a report of&nbsp;a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, they saw Rita Lillard&nbsp;approach the apartment where she was shot at close range at the front door.&nbsp;The suspect&nbsp;then&nbsp;fired shots at officers after he was ordered to drop his weapon. Officers returned fire&nbsp;striking the suspect. A SWAT team was called after the&nbsp;man&nbsp;barricaded himself in the apartment. He later surrendered and was taken into&nbsp;custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Officers discovered that Rita Lillard had died from&nbsp;the gunshot wounds she&nbsp;sustained while she approached the apartment.&nbsp;They found the body of her daughter, Virginia Lillard, inside the apartment.&nbsp;The suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment.&nbsp;

At a press conference on the day of the&nbsp;murders, Assistant Chief Bashir&nbsp;described Nunez’s relationship with the&nbsp;Lillards.&nbsp;

“We have two victims,” Bashir said. “That was the suspect’s girlfriend and also the suspect’s girlfriend’s mom as well.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The case is still under investigation by the&nbsp;Houston&nbsp;Police Department.&nbsp;

Rita Lillard&nbsp;was raised in Hoisington and&nbsp;earned her nursing degree at Barton Community College. She&nbsp;later worked as a registered&nbsp;nurse.&nbsp;

Virginia Lillard, known as “Jenni,” was born in Great Bend and grew up in Hoisington&nbsp;until&nbsp;the&nbsp;family moved to Houston.&nbsp;

Correction 9:05 a.m. Wednesday: The "Three Amigos" mural is being painted on the side of the S&amp;W Supply building in Hays.

After just two days a painting depicting a larger-than-life image of a bison has appeared on the side of the S&amp;W Supply building at Eighth and Allen streets in Hays.

Hays Artist Dennis Schiel is painting the first in what local officials hope will be eight to 10 downtown murals in two years. The project has been dubbed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brushthebricks/">Brush the Bricks</a>.&nbsp;

The murals will take several different forms. Some will be painted by professional artists like Schiel. Some of the murals will be metal. Some of them will include community involvement in the painting process.

"We also want this project to honor the artist who are also legends in Hays — the Pete Feltens and the John Codys and more," said Sara Bloom, director of the Downton Hays Development Corp.

Felten is known for his limestone sculptures that already grace downtown. John Cody was a local psychiatrist and known for his beautiful, detailed paintings of moths.

The project is hoping to do 12 framed vinyl art pieces to depict these artists' works, Bloom said.

Schiel's first mural is titled "The Three Amigos." It will depict the three figures of the Old West that made Hays famous, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok and Gen. George Custer.&nbsp;

The mural was originally designed for the Sternberg water tower, but that project was nixed by the Hays City Commission. He said he anticipates he will complete the mural some time in August.

Schiel also will be painting a mural on the Arc of the Central Plains building at 600 Main St. starting in September. The mural will depict Special Olympics athletes.

"I am hoping to depict the thrill they get out of participating," Schiel said.&nbsp;

A second mural on the Arc building will be created by individuals in the community with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"The art downtown is just the start," Schiel said. "I would like to see it create a great interest in the arts by the community, not just downtown. We are looking at doing some projects outside of downtown."

Schiel plans a fourth, "Welcome to Hays" mural on the side of the former Good Book Store building at 11th and Main streets.

Eventually Schiel, who helped with the fundraising on the mural project, said he would like to see an endowment for the arts created to benefit Hays and the surrounding area.

"When I was trying to get the tower started, my goal was to really have something for people to come in and see," he said.&nbsp;

Melissa Dixon, director of the Hays Conventions &amp; Visitors Bureau, said she hopes people will choose to stop in Hays and come downtown to see the murals.

"I feel a mural is its own little attraction," she said. "It turns that building into a tourist destination. ... I think Hays is already known for having a strong and vibrant art community, and this makes it even better."

Hays artist Matt Miller will be painting an abstract mural starting this fall. However, the location of that mural has not been determined.

An oriental dragon is planned for the side of the Sake2Me building, 803 Fort St. The artist has yet to be chosen for that project.

Time lapse cameras are going to be installed at the sites of the murals while they are being composed.

A mural painted by the community will be on the side of the Midland Marketing building. That project is set for summer 2022.

Bloom said project organizers are interested in community members submitting ideas for murals, as well as suggestions on buildings on which they think they should be placed.

The project is a partnership between the DHDC, the Hays Arts Council and the Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. The project is being funded through donations and grants. The DHDC has already raised $90,000 toward its $150,000 goal. Murals will be painted or installed as they are funded.

Brush the Bricks mural project launches in downtown Hays

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer It’s wheat harvest time in central Kansas! I always know harvest will arrive, but it also always seems to sneak up on me. This year it seems to have snuck up a bit more than usual as we are still catching up from dealing with our wicked weather from a month ago. &nbsp; We are still replanting fields damaged by hail or flooded by rain. Our days leading up to this year’s harvest have included the regular preparation for summer and harvest, as well as a lot of unanticipated extras.&nbsp; &nbsp; Extra time has been needed in the fields replanting, spraying and cultivating while also dealing with insurance claims, adjustors, contractors, windshield repairs, dent repairs and a roofing crew. There’s definitely been a lot of those unexpected extras this year leading up to summer harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; Thankfully, we have wonderful helpers who have been able to assist with the needed annual tasks that must be done prior to and during harvest. From preparing irrigation, laying pipe, servicing the tractors, trucks and combines, helping with irrigation repairs, cutting wheat and delivering the grain, we have a great group of people helping us. &nbsp; I realized a few days ago this is the first year in a very long time that I do not have a personal helper of my own this summer. Normally I would have a teenage girl helping me with the kids and household chores during the summer months. I called these helpers my “right-hand gals” because the job wasn’t just babysitting. &nbsp; In the past, I’d be able to leave the kids with my helper when I’d need to quickly drive out to a field to shuttle equipment or crew members to another location. Sometimes I would need to drive to another town to get machine parts. It was wonderful to have a helper who I could leave in charge of the house and kids to be able to complete all the necessary and unscheduled tasks associated with summer and harvest. &nbsp; My helper’s main role was to keep the day moving forward whether I was at home with the kids or not. At times, the job would require prepping food or baking cookies for our harvest crew. Sometimes it entailed loading and unloading the dishwasher or the laundry. Sometimes it meant reading books to the kids, making sure they were put down for their scheduled naps or lifeguarding when the kids would take an afternoon dip in our stock tank pool. &nbsp; Having a “right-hand gal” helped keep the kids rested and on a schedule. Summer on the farm and wheat harvest is incredibly exciting to participate in, but it’s also tiring for everyone involved. Between the hot, dry winds constantly blowing, and the long days and nights of work, it’s understandable why adults might — on occasion — get cranky. I’m sure one can imagine how the intense harvest schedule would affect a child if not properly rested!&nbsp; &nbsp; But as in all of life, this year I am reminded that seasons continually change, and my right-hand gals are grown and gone. My son has transitioned to helping more on the farm this summer. He’s now shadowing his daddy and grandpa, helping the men service machines by handing them tools, riding in the combine and helping with irrigation. I no longer fill a sippy cup and strap him into his car seat. Instead, he fills his own water jug daily and is doing his part helping with summer tasks on the farm under the supervision of some pretty patient people. &nbsp; My daughter is now another little helper. She’s transitioned to helping with laundry and baking cookies with her grandma. Now, whenever I have to jump in a vehicle to complete a pressing task, my little assistant is usually with me. Most of the time she’s happy to tag along as long as she has a book or two with her. But sometimes when the day gets tough, the immediate playing of a requested soundtrack and the promise of a frozen drink or popsicle usually helps.&nbsp; Yes, I’ve always been aware and thankful for the wonderful help we have especially during the summer months. This year, I have become acutely more aware of the blessing of helpers — both big and small.

Our days leading up to this year’s harvest have included the regular preparation for summer and harvest, as well as a lot of unanticipated extras.&nbsp; &nbsp; Extra time has been needed in the fields replanting, spraying and cultivating while also dealing with insurance claims, adjustors, contractors, windshield repairs, dent repairs and a roofing crew. There’s definitely been a lot of those unexpected extras this year leading up to summer harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; Thankfully, we have wonderful helpers who have been able to assist with the needed annual tasks that must be done prior to and during harvest. From preparing irrigation, laying pipe, servicing the tractors, trucks and combines, helping with irrigation repairs, cutting wheat and delivering the grain, we have a great group of people helping us. &nbsp; I realized a few days ago this is the first year in a very long time that I do not have a personal helper of my own this summer. Normally I would have a teenage girl helping me with the kids and household chores during the summer months. I called these helpers my “right-hand gals” because the job wasn’t just babysitting. &nbsp; In the past, I’d be able to leave the kids with my helper when I’d need to quickly drive out to a field to shuttle equipment or crew members to another location. Sometimes I would need to drive to another town to get machine parts. It was wonderful to have a helper who I could leave in charge of the house and kids to be able to complete all the necessary and unscheduled tasks associated with summer and harvest. &nbsp; My helper’s main role was to keep the day moving forward whether I was at home with the kids or not. At times, the job would require prepping food or baking cookies for our harvest crew. Sometimes it entailed loading and unloading the dishwasher or the laundry. Sometimes it meant reading books to the kids, making sure they were put down for their scheduled naps or lifeguarding when the kids would take an afternoon dip in our stock tank pool. &nbsp; Having a “right-hand gal” helped keep the kids rested and on a schedule. Summer on the farm and wheat harvest is incredibly exciting to participate in, but it’s also tiring for everyone involved. Between the hot, dry winds constantly blowing, and the long days and nights of work, it’s understandable why adults might — on occasion — get cranky. I’m sure one can imagine how the intense harvest schedule would affect a child if not properly rested!&nbsp; &nbsp; But as in all of life, this year I am reminded that seasons continually change, and my right-hand gals are grown and gone. My son has transitioned to helping more on the farm this summer. He’s now shadowing his daddy and grandpa, helping the men service machines by handing them tools, riding in the combine and helping with irrigation. I no longer fill a sippy cup and strap him into his car seat. Instead, he fills his own water jug daily and is doing his part helping with summer tasks on the farm under the supervision of some pretty patient people. &nbsp; My daughter is now another little helper. She’s transitioned to helping with laundry and baking cookies with her grandma. Now, whenever I have to jump in a vehicle to complete a pressing task, my little assistant is usually with me. Most of the time she’s happy to tag along as long as she has a book or two with her. But sometimes when the day gets tough, the immediate playing of a requested soundtrack and the promise of a frozen drink or popsicle usually helps.&nbsp; Yes, I’ve always been aware and thankful for the wonderful help we have especially during the summer months. July is a special month for many Americans.&nbsp; Most of us will eagerly take a break from our busy summer schedules to once again celebrate Independence Day.&nbsp; There will be much fanfare with fireworks, parades, picnics, and other patriotic events celebrating our country’s independence from Great Britain in 1776.&nbsp; But when the festivities have ended, only a few will have reflected upon the true meaning of independence and the role it has played in shaping our nation’s character.

Our founding fathers made it clear in the Declaration of Independence that all men were entitled to certain unalienable rights.&nbsp; Among those rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.&nbsp; It is easy to take for granted those rights and freedoms we share as Americans.&nbsp; However, it is important that we understand and appreciate the hard work and sacrifice that our forefathers made in order for us to enjoy the luxury of freedom.&nbsp; Freedom and independence are cornerstones in the foundation of our country’s heritage.&nbsp; The independent ideology of the American people is a fundamental element of our society and a key to our nation’s prosperity.&nbsp; We must protect that independence at all cost.

One important freedom we must protect is our free enterprise system.&nbsp; American business, and certainly the oil and gas industry, was founded upon the ideology of independence and free-market principles.&nbsp; Those principles allow business to be governed by the laws of supply and demand without government interference and excessive regulation.&nbsp; The dynamic free market has led to innovation and wealth creation, and has established an economic environment where hard work is rewarded.

But now, it seems free-market capitalism and independence is under attack.&nbsp; Environmental activists work to obstruct energy development and infrastructure projects, reducing our energy options under a false belief that oil and natural gas production and use are incompatible with environmental progress. &nbsp;

The U.S. continues on a path toward one of the greatest self-inflicted wounds in history.&nbsp; President Biden has adopted liberal climate change priorities calling for an end to fossil fuel production and use and a restoration of the failed energy policies of the Obama-era.&nbsp; Biden’s anti-fossil fuel barrage will have no effect on the climate as global demand for fossil fuels will continue to increase for decades no matter what the U.S. does.&nbsp; Meantime, Russia, China, and Iran will take advantage of America’s astonishing fossil-fuel retreat.

The Biden Administration’s energy policy errors are oblivious to the needs of low-income families who would be hurt the most by these misguided energy policies.&nbsp; Biden’s plans are out-of-touch with working people and the economy. &nbsp;

What Biden’s anti-energy agenda combined with climate proposals like the Green New Deal do is concentrate more power in the hands of the federal government and central planners, which at the end of the day, is what they want.&nbsp; We should use our energy abundance to lift people up, which is a different philosophy than a zero-emissions world.&nbsp;

Contrary to claims from environmental activists, cutting U.S. oil and natural gas production would not magically reduce world energy demand.&nbsp; But it could raise costs significantly for American families and manufacturers, profoundly damage the U.S. economy, diminish our geopolitical influence and severely weaken our energy security.&nbsp; That’s where environmental activists strategies lead, and it is not a path most Americans want to take.

In his 1946 Independence Day speech, John F. Kennedy said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”&nbsp; Those words were never so true.&nbsp; Being mindful of the erosion of our independence and free-market system by misguided environmental activist ideologies cannot be over emphasized.&nbsp; We must, now more than ever, remain steadfast in our resolve to protect and preserve the precious independence that has molded our nation’s character.

CROSS: Protecting our independence

MANHATTAN — The Fourth of July may be a fun and noisy celebration for many people, but a Kansas State University veterinarian says that's not the case for some pets. "This holiday is often a time filled with fear and anxiety for some pets — and it can also be a dangerous time for them as well," said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/education/clinical-sciences/faculty-staff/faculty/nelson/index.html" target="_blank">Susan Nelson</a>, clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc/" target="_blank">K-State Veterinary Health Center</a>, a part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>. "It is best to speak to your veterinarian now about medication options if needed, especially since the majority of fireworks will be set off over the weekend this year when your veterinarian’s office will likely be closed." Nelson offers some tips to help keep pets safe this holiday. The first: Keep your pet indoors for the most part, and under leash control when you do need to take them outside. "The sound of fireworks can make some pets run off in an attempt to get away from the noise," Nelson said. "In fact, this is the time of year with the highest incidence of runaway pets, so be sure to keep them secure." Besides getting lost, Nelson said there is also the risk of pets getting hit by a car because their fear of fireworks will make them less observant of oncoming traffic. She recommends making sure your pet has some type of ID, such as a tag and/or microchip, in case it should get lost. Ideally, it should have both. Nelson said keeping your pet inside also keeps it safe from those people who may try to harm an animal with fireworks. "Many dogs will appreciate being in the safe confines of their crate and will do fine if allowed to stay there," Nelson said. "A secure room may also work as well. Be sure to close the blinds or use heavy curtains to block out the flashes of light." Nelson also suggests the following to help calm a pet who gets rattled by loud noises: • Play soothing music or turn on the TV or white noise machine in an attempt to block out the loud crackles and booms. • Trying an anxiety wrap specially made for pets may help calm those with mild anxiety. • Using over-the-counter medications made for anxious pets may benefit those with mild to moderate noise anxiety. • Consider temporarily relocating your pet to a quieter friend/relative's house or kennel during this time. • Talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medications if your pet has a severe noise phobia.&nbsp;Several different medications are available to help treat anxiety due to loud noises. Have the medication ready to give on the first day that fireworks are allowed to begin in your community. Just as with young children, Nelson said it is important to keep dangerous items out of your pet's reach and not apply products on pets that aren't labeled for safe use on them. "These include lighters, punks, matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, citronella candles/oils, insect coils and repellants and fireworks, both unlit and lit," Nelson said. Even if your dog is not bothered by fireworks, Nelson said it is still subject to being burned or injured by fireworks if it gets too close or attempts to retrieve one that has been ignited. Many fireworks also contain toxic chemicals if ingested. Another product to avoid using on pets can be some insect repellants, Nelson said. "Mosquitoes are often out in force this time of year, but don't be tempted to spray your pet with insect repellants that contain DEET as it is toxic for them," she said. "Only apply insect repellants that state they are safe to use on pets." Human foods and beverages also pose dangers to pets. "Pets often experience vomiting and/or diarrhea when given foods they are not used to eating," Nelson said. "And some foods, such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, grapes or raisins, coffee, salt and yeast-based bread dough are all potentially toxic for your pet." When ingested, fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis, while corncobs, bones and wooden barbeque skewers can cause blockage of the intestinal tract if swallowed. Every dog has its day — but Fourth of July may not be one of them

The weather is hot and harvest is in full swing. That can only mean one thing: Fair Time is here. Don’t let the heat keep you from enjoying some of the activities scheduled during the next few weeks, at both the Barton and Ellis County Fairs. There are several things you can do to stay hydrated as the temperature climbs. Drinking at least eight cups of fluid a day is recommended under normal circumstances and more is needed as summer temperatures and humidity rise. Sometimes we forget that 55-75 percent of our body’s weight is water; the brain is 70 percent water; blood is 82 percent water, and the lungs are nearly 90 percent water. Water is also responsible for carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells; cushions organs, tissue, bones and joints; removes waste; and regulates body temperature.

Exposure to the sun or getting sunburned will speed fluid loss, and so will drinking beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, which both act as diuretics. Fluid replacement is essential, but it is best to not wait until you are thirsty. Excessive water loss or dehydration can impair body function and lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke and can be life threatening. It is a good idea to become familiar with the signs of heat exhaustion. They include: dizziness, weakness, feeling thirsty, uncoordinated or nauseated. Most people sweat a lot during heat exhaustion. The signs of a heat stroke are different. They include: a body temperature of 104 or above, confusion, staggering, possible fainting, either a rapid pulse or a slow weak pulse, and not sweating, despite the heat. It is important to get medical help right away if you suspect a heat stroke.

Cool water is recommended for the majority of fluid replacement because it is easily absorbed. Many foods also have a high-water content and should be included in a healthy summer diet. Melons and most other fruits, along with tomatoes, vegetables, soups, smoothies, puddings and gelatin salads should not be overlooked. Sports beverages may be helpful for athletes who are exercising more than one hour and are in need of electrolytes and quick energy, but consider diluting them with water in order to reduce sugar intake.&nbsp;

The bottom line on staying hydrated is to drink fluids before you become thirsty. As we age our ability to sense thirst declines, leaving older people unable to rely on their thirst to prompt them to drink enough fluids. Infants and small children also need to be monitored closely to assure that dehydration does not occur. Little ones lose more fluids because they have a greater proportion of skin surface in relation to their size. Offer water frequently, each time a child passes through the kitchen and before, during and after play.

Let’s hope that the summer of 2021 does not show up in the record books!
