Three-day weather outlook

On September 21, 2022, at 3:01 p.m., the Hays Emergency Communication Center received a report of a structure fire in the 100 blk of West 37th Street, Hays. 

The Hays Fire Department along with the Ellis County Fire Department, Ellis County Emergency Medical Services, and the Hays Police Department were dispatched to the scene. 

While en route to the scene it was reported that a child was trapped inside the house. 

Rescue efforts were initiated, and firefighters were able to locate and remove the child from the home. 

The child was transported to Hays Medical Center by ECEMS. It is with a heavy heart that we report that the child later died from injuries caused by the fire. 

Fire crews used multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire. 

The fire caused extensive damage to the home. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshall’s Office. 

No further information will be released at this time.

At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Hays emergency responders were dispatched to a structure fire in the 100 block of West 37th.

Arriving crews encountered an active fire in a home and began efforts to extinguish the fire.

Roads surrounding the area were closed as firefighters from the Hays and Ellis County fire departments worked the fire, which filled the immediate area with thick smoke.

Gas and electric service were cut at around 3:30 p.m. as efforts continued.

The fire was determined to be out at 4:22 p.m.

UPDATE: Child dies after being trapped in house fire Wednesday afternoon in Hays

KANSAS
CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals
chairman and CEO John Sherman today announced the departure of Dayton Moore, the organization’s President of Baseball Operations and leader
of that department since 2006.

Sherman
also announced that J.J. Picollo
has been named Executive Vice
President and General Manager overseeing baseball operations, effective
immediately.

Moore
was General Manager as the Royals won the 2014 American League pennant and the
2015 World Series. Under his leadership, the Royals’ record improved over seven
consecutive years from 2009 to 2015, matching a Major League Baseball record.

“Dayton’s
16 years of leadership here will always mark the transformation into a World
Championship club,” Sherman said. “Our fans, our region, and our community will
never forget the excitement we shared in back-to-back pennants and the World
Series Championship in 2015. He always put the Kansas City Royals first, and
we’re stronger today because of it.”

Picollo
became the seventh General Manager in Royals history last September, receiving
the title of Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager. He
previously held the title of Vice President/Assistant General Manager, Player
Personnel from 2015-21, and served as the Royals’ Assistant General
Manager-Scouting &amp; Player development from 2008-2015. Picollo joined Kansas
City’s Baseball Operations Department in 2006 as Director of Player Development
on Aug.13, 2006.

experience in baseball has prepared him for the challenges ahead,” Sherman

The Hays area received another dose of much-needed rainfall Tuesday — just more than a quarter of an inch — with more expected into early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City said Wednesday morning's light showers will give way to clear skies as the day progresses, but there is an 80 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms in the area after 10 p.m. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch is possible.

While severe weather in not expected, the front could bring dangerous lightning and brief torrential downpours.

The chance for precipitation continues Thursday, with a 50 percent to 60 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms and&nbsp; up to another half-inch of rain.

The mercury will nosedive Thursday, as well. After a high of 101 Tuesday, Thursday's high is only expected to reach the mid-50s.

NWS: Welcome rain in the forecast over the coming days

Just before students were returning to classes last month, Hays Public Works employees were restriping street crosswalks in the city.

They prioritized the work, starting at pedestrian crosswalks and parking areas around schools.

Turns out, street paint is one of the things that is in short supply because of COVID, says City Manager Toby Dougherty.

"Among the unique nature of things that are short because of COVID, street paint is one of them," Dougherty told city commissioners during the August progress report.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We're having a hard time getting the street paint. Why? We don't know. They're getting enough to do some of the critical areas around the schools."

New pavement markings will be applied throughout town into the fall season.

Some unscheduled curb and gutter repair is also being done.

"The heat this summer has caused a lot of popping of concrete," Dougherty reported. "It's not uncommon to see either sidewalks or street panels heave and curbs pop.&nbsp;

"Concrete will get cracks and it'll expand with heat. When you get prolonged heat exposure, it will expand to the point where it's gotta give somewhere."

🎥 CITY: COVID, high temps interfere with Hays street maintenance

The Ellis County Commission voted Monday to change the time
and day of its weekly meeting starting next month.

Currently, meetings are held the first three Mondays
of the month at 5 p.m., but County Administrator Darin Myers said staff had suggested a different time and day.

Myers said there were a number of reasons given in favor
of the move, among those was allowing commissioners time to attend Victoria
or Ellis city council meetings.

“You're sometimes either late, rushed or can't get there at
all,” he said.

The commission voted to move the meetings to Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. starting in October.

Commissioner Joe Leroux spoke in favor of the change and called it a "good move."

“It's going to get us better attendance from county employees, it’s
going to give us the same openness that we currently have for outside county
employees to attend the meetings, and it's going to free us up in the evenings and
other conditions and community events in the area," he said.

Myers said the change will also help to reduce overtime costs
because the county will not have to pay in IT employee to record and produce the
meeting. They also have a member of the sheriff’s department who provides security
for the meeting. 

“If we ever have staff that have to present that aren’t
department heads or when we bring in employees, whether new employees or
celebrating the success of the promotive employee, it’s sometimes hard to get
them in,” Myers said. “Because it's big in employment today ... your work-life
balance. When 5 o'clock hits, they're ready to go home. They got kids to
take care of ... sports to go to.”

Staff has also told Myers that they will be more likely to
attend meetings in the morning during work hours.

Myers said they also believe this will help outside businesses
who come before the commission as well.

“Most people that come and present to the commission are
usually there to represent their business or their organization ... business hours are eight to five.” Myers said. “That would also release some of
their nighttime hours to not have to go to a commission meeting.

Both Michael Berges and Nathan Leiker, who won their respective
commission races in the primary election and are running unopposed in the
general election, told Myers they were open to the change.

The next commission meeting will be 8:30 a.m. Oct. 4.

Tickets on sale for annual Cejetan Ca$h fundraiser

The Hays Police Department is investigating an alleged domestic violence death in Hays Monday night and have made an arrest.

Just before 10 p.m. Monday, the Hays Police Department 
Communication Center received a report of an unresponsive male in a 
house in the 200 block of West Sixth in Hays. 


Officers from the HPD and Ellis County Emergency Medical Services&nbsp; first responders were dispatched to the scene, where they found a deceased 54-year-old male, who appeared to have been beaten, according to a news release. The Ellis County Coroner’s Office was 
notified and also responded to the scene.&nbsp;

Monte J. Wilson, 54, was also located inside the residence and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and aggravated battery. Wilson is 
currently being held in the Ellis County jail.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Wilson has previous Ellis County convictions for aggravated battery and aggravated witness intimidation, as well as drug offenses.&nbsp;

"The Hays Police 
Department is not aware of any other threats to the community reference 
this disturbance," the HPD said in a news release. "Wilson is presumed to be innocent unless proven guilty
 in a court of law. "

The HPD, coroner's office and Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and 
the Hays Police Department continue to investigate the incident.&nbsp;

It makes me chuckle when I think about people who don’t live on a farm trying to create clean and pretty spaces through white wash, distressed paint and vintage hardware. Real farmhouses are rarely as desirable as this style is made out to be. I live in a real farm house and can guarantee my house won’t be featured on HGTV anytime soon. I honestly don’t think there is anything in my house that resembles the farmhouse style. However, the character that inspired designers to want to recreate the functional, no frills feel of country living, can be seen in many places in this old farmhouse. Every house has its own story. Our house’s story began as a kit house made by Sears and Roebuck that was delivered by train and assembled by its owner. We don’t know the exact year the house was delivered but estimate it was likely around the 1920s. The house was built just a few yards from the original homestead, which was still standing until about a decade ago and could fit in our kitchen. I can imagine the excitement and pride that must have been felt when this model was selected. It was a statement of perseverance and success to move from a house that was merely shelter to what was likely the equivalent of a mansion for the time. The trade-off of our house’s cool story is it was built by farmers not professional carpenters. The house is sturdy and functional, even though it has lots of little imperfections that are a product of the original DIYers. The house has seen a lot of lifestyle change in the last century: the installation of indoor plumbing, electrification and the move from wood stoves and chimneys to a furnace and air conditioning. Some of the remnants of these eras can still be seen in things like a few push button light switches or nob and tub lights from the original electrification, which have been preserved as novelties. We have also seen glimpses of the interests and taste of former home owners as we have worked to make the house our own. While tearing out outdated carpeting to take advantage of the original hardwood floors, we found decorative room mats that were in style during the time of construction. Each time we discover a new detail in the house, it’s like the house is telling the story of generations that have lived here before. Though each family who has called this house their home has been unique, they all share some things in common. The kitchen has prepared many meals for families who work the land. The floors have been tracked with mud and dirt more times than they have been clean. The rooms have played host to moments of joy, hope, and love that hopefully outweighed the times of worry and grief. The bay windows provided protection for the extreme Kansas weather that has often been a blessing and a curse. Our house is worn and imperfect because it is a place where life has been lived. Character like that can’t be replicated for a home good store. This house will never be as pretty as homes designed to look like the farmhouse style, and that’s OK with me. I am happy to live in this old farmhouse.

I was having a conversation with a friend this week and they mentioned that they were vacuuming cobwebs out of their house only to have them appear again two days later. I told her to just get used to it because it was only going to get worse over the next several&nbsp;weeks.&nbsp;

Spiders live on insects and other insect like things even including other spiders. Many spiders do not survive the winter as an adult, they either overwinter as eggs or an adult female does hibernate so as to lay eggs and die in the spring. It all depends on the species. When spring starts out there aren’t a lot of insects necessarily available for food so spiders grow slowly. But as the summer progresses we see a constantly increasing population of insects and as the insect population grows, so do the creatures that live on insects, like spiders. By the time we get&nbsp;well into September&nbsp;things can get kind of out of hand. Then insects start trying to come inside our&nbsp;homes to find a safe place to overwinter. Right along with those insects come the things that live on insects—spiders.&nbsp;

Now that half of you are totally freaking out let me say that we really only have two “venomous” spiders in Kansas. I prefer venomous over poisonous because the only time they are a problem is if they bite you and inject their venom. Hemlock is poisonous, copperheads and brown recluses are venomous! With that out of the way, we have black widows and brown recluses in Kansas. Black widows are&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;rare. Brown recluses, on the other hand, are so common that I can find them in every house in the region, given enough time!

Both spiders can be a problem if they bite you, or it can honestly be a non-&nbsp;event. All spiders can bite. It’s how they live. But many of them either have jaws too small to puncture our skin, or if they do puncture the skin, the result won’t be much worse than a mosquito bite. If you ever have any apparent bite that won’t heal or causes excessive pain, redness and swelling, get to your family doctor as soon as possible. Brown recluses come by their name honestly. They don’t spin webs, they are stalk and attack predators and they want to avoid people. You’re going to find them in piles of newspapers, in boxes in rooms you don’t go into often, or deep in the&nbsp;garage where you rarely go!

To reduce spiders in your home take steps to reduce insects in your home. Make sure that doors and windows seal tight. This time of&nbsp;year&nbsp;treat the foundation and areas up and down from the foundation with a general lawn and garden insecticide. Use a ready to use home insect pest control product and treat the baseboard areas, locations where utilities enter your&nbsp;house and thresholds of doorways into your house. Insects, and spiders, will often travel where the wall and floor meet because they are at less risk of attack&nbsp;when&nbsp;out in the open. Do not use “bombs” or glue traps. Bombs are really only effective on flying insects. Glue traps don’t really reduce populations and only show you how many insects and spiders are really in your house, which will ultimately only freak you out more!

We will have insects and spiders in our houses. That’s a fact. You can reduce those populations but not eliminate them. Once freezing weather starts to show up, things will start to get better. Well, at least until spring.

CAMPBELL: You’re going to be seeing more spiders

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Western Star semi driven by Rodney E. Keller, 70, Hartley, Iowa, was eastbound on Kansas 156 at 15th Street.

The semi drifted off the right side of the road, struck the bridge rail and traveled down a steep embankment. 

The vehicle then traveled up a hill, went airborne at the hill crest, traveled back down another steep embankment before coming to rest in a soybean field

EMS transported Keller to the hospital in Ellsworth. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

TREGO COUNTY — A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 8 a.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Buick Lucerne driven by Nikki Nicole Plante, 26, Ellis, was southbound on County Road 380. 

The driver lost control after crossing County Road H. She swerved and the vehicle enter the east ditch, overturned and came to rest on its wheels.

EMS transported Plante to HaysMed. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Cars and camaraderie on display during Thunder on the Plains

Kansas crude prices start the week at $75.25 per barrel, down $1.75 from a week ago but nearly $10 higher than at the start of the year, and $13 higher than a year ago. Futures prices dropped nearly $2 last week, but by lunchtime Monday were up half a dollar in New York ($85.64/bbl) and London ($91.89/bbl). The auto club AAA says gasoline prices may soon end their string of daily declines after more than 100 consecutive days. U.S. gasoline prices are the lowest since early March, but fluctuating oil prices have slowed down the decline. The national average pump price was a fraction above $3.67 per gallon Monday. That's down nearly four cents from a week ago, the smallest weekly decline in months. Average prices are 24 cents lower than a month ago, but still 48 cents per gallon higher than last year at this time. The national average has fallen $1.34 since its peak in mid-June. Kansas pump prices on Monday average $3.40 per gallon, a dime lower than a month ago but more than half a dollar higher than a year ago. Diesel prices drop to $4.72 across Kansas, down 12 cents from last month, but $1.60 per gallon higher than a year ago. The Rig Count in Kansas shows 32 active drilling rigs west of Wichita, down one from last week. There are 27 active rigs in eastern Kansas. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported drilling underway on one lease in Barton County on Friday. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports one newly-completed well in Russell County, out of 24 west of Wichita last week. Operators have completed 1,151 wells so far this year, compared to 609 at this time last year. Kansas regulators approved 42 permits for drilling at new locations last week, 20 of them east of Wichita and 22 in Western Kansas, including one new permit in Barton County and two in Stafford County. So far this year, there are 1,172 new permits across the state, up from 732 a year ago. Domestic crude inventories topped off at 429.6 million barrels on September 9th, an increase of 2.4 million barrels for the week. That's about two percent below the five-year seasonal average, according to the EIA. Gasoline stockpiles dropped 1.8 million barrels and are about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year. The government reported a slight increase in U.S. crude-oil production last week, topping 12 million barrels per day for the 8th week in a row. Output during the week through September 9th increased about 20,000 barrels per day to 12.134 million. That's more than two million barrels per day higher than the same week last year. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. crude imports dropped by nearly one million barrels per day to 5.8 million. The four week average indicate imports are roughly 2.6 percent higher than a year ago. The first half of this year saw a big jump in U.S. exports of petroleum products, due largely to changing trading patterns after the Ukraine invasion. The government says exports averaged nearly six million barrels per day, the best January-to-June tally since 1981. Oil-by-rail shipments in the United States were down nearly five percent last week. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,351 tankers hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week through September 10th, down nearly three-hundred carloads from the week before and 4.6% lower than a year ago. Canadian shippers moved 8,063 tanker carloads. That's down more than six hundred tanker carloads from the week before, and 1.6% lower year-over-year. The government predicts the rebound in U.S. crude production will continue, and could set a new record next year. In it's Short Term Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration predicts domestic producers will pump an average 11.8 million barrels per day this year, which would be more than half a million barrels per day higher than last year. EIA expects output next year will rise to 12.6 million barrels per day, which would be an all-time record. The current record of 12.3 million barrels per day was set in 2019. North Dakota operators produced just over 33.1 million barrels of crude oil in July, which is down nearly 30,000 barrels per day from the month before. According to the Department of Mineral Resources, the number-three crude-producing state continues to exceed its voluntary limits on gas flaring, capturing 94% of the natural gas produced at oil wells. Saudi Arabia told OPEC it raised crude production to just over 11 million barrels a day last month, according to the cartel's Monthly Oil Market Report. It’s the highest Saudi output since April 2020 during the short-lived price war with Russia. Saudi output has only rarely reached 11 million barrels in the country’s decades as an oil exporter.

Output during the week through September 9th increased about 20,000 barrels per day to 12.134 million. That's more than two million barrels per day higher than the same week last year. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. crude imports dropped by nearly one million barrels per day to 5.8 million. The four week average indicate imports are roughly 2.6 percent higher than a year ago. The first half of this year saw a big jump in U.S. exports of petroleum products, due largely to changing trading patterns after the Ukraine invasion. The government says exports averaged nearly six million barrels per day, the best January-to-June tally since 1981. Oil-by-rail shipments in the United States were down nearly five percent last week. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,351 tankers hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week through September 10th, down nearly three-hundred carloads from the week before and 4.6% lower than a year ago. Canadian shippers moved 8,063 tanker carloads. That's down more than six hundred tanker carloads from the week before, and 1.6% lower year-over-year. The government predicts the rebound in U.S. crude production will continue, and could set a new record next year. In it's Short Term Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration predicts domestic producers will pump an average 11.8 million barrels per day this year, which would be more than half a million barrels per day higher than last year. EIA expects output next year will rise to 12.6 million barrels per day, which would be an all-time record. The current record of 12.3 million barrels per day was set in 2019. North Dakota operators produced just over 33.1 million barrels of crude oil in July, which is down nearly 30,000 barrels per day from the month before. According to the Department of Mineral Resources, the number-three crude-producing state continues to exceed its voluntary limits on gas flaring, capturing 94% of the natural gas produced at oil wells. Saudi Arabia told OPEC it raised crude production to just over 11 million barrels a day last month, according to the cartel's Monthly Oil Market Report. It’s the highest Saudi output since April 2020 during the short-lived price war with Russia. Saudi output has only rarely reached 11 million barrels in the country’s decades as an oil exporter.

Hansen Museum's 50th anniversary features Michael Martin Murphey

The Catholic Schools of the Salina Diocese have been named a 2022 Cognia System of Distinction for excellence in education. Cognia, the global nonprofit school improvement organization, recognized 96 schools/school systems in the United States and Puerto Rico and nine in other countries across the globe as Schools/Systems of Distinction.&nbsp;

The Catholic Diocese of Salina&nbsp;is&nbsp;recognized as a 2022&nbsp;Cognia&nbsp;System&nbsp;of Distinction&nbsp;a program which&nbsp;recognizes pre-K–12 education institutions that exemplify excellence in education and service to learners.&nbsp;Cognia selected&nbsp;the Salina Diocese&nbsp;as one of&nbsp;the&nbsp;96&nbsp;schools&nbsp;and&nbsp;38&nbsp;systems&nbsp;out of more than&nbsp;1,500&nbsp;institutions&nbsp;that were eligible&nbsp;for&nbsp;its&nbsp;2022<a href="https://www.cognia.org/services/accreditation-certification/schools-of-distinction/">Cognia Schools&nbsp;and Systems&nbsp;of Distinction</a>.&nbsp;

“All of our school buildings came together to make this possible. The collaborative efforts of our school leaders, council members, teachers and students were far above my expectations. We are honored to be named a Cognia System of Distinction,” said Geoff Andrews, superintendent of schools.

<a></a>This cycle was the first time&nbsp;the Salina Diocese sought&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cognia.org/services/accreditation-certification/">Cognia Accreditation</a>&nbsp;as a district.&nbsp; Previous years’ accreditation was through individual schools. The District Review took place in March 2022.&nbsp;The Salina Diocese&nbsp;participated in&nbsp;Cognia’s&nbsp;rigorous Accreditation Engagement Review process, which&nbsp;is based on research-based performance standards.&nbsp;The process includes&nbsp;a&nbsp;third-party&nbsp;review&nbsp;by education experts&nbsp;of evidence, interviews,&nbsp;and classroom observations. The evaluation covers&nbsp;Leadership Capacity, Learning Capacity,&nbsp;and Resource Capacity, as well as a&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;commitment to continuous improvement.

“Accreditation reflects the progress of a system in&nbsp;five-year&nbsp;cycles," said Dr. Nick Compagnone, superintendent of schools for the Salina Diocese from 1993 to 2020. "That process involves a peer review of&nbsp;of&nbsp;the system. We are proud of all our&nbsp;schools&nbsp;but it is extra special when an external team validates the&nbsp;great&nbsp;work of our Catholic Schools in the Salina Diocese.”
