The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;Marion Reservoir in Marion County is at a Hazard level due to high toxins and high cell count.&nbsp;The Army Corps of Engineers is asking the public to avoid Marion Reservoir and is closing all parks, boat ramps and recreation areas on the reservoir until conditions improve to acceptable levels.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Public health advisories for KS lakes due to blue-green algae

WILSON LAKE — The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants park goers and the public to know that a military exercise will be partly taking place at Wilson Lake from Saturday through June 28, 2022.

The Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing will conduct a military training exercise and will set up military equipment, tents and long-range communication systems on land near the Scenic Overlook or north Lucas Park. The purpose of the exercise is to test the operational readiness of the Airmen and equipment assigned to the unit.

Visitors at Wilson Lake can expect to see military vehicles, personnel and equipment. Visitors may experience road closures and some areas will be inaccessible to unauthorized personnel. Military personnel and equipment will not be staged on public campsites.&nbsp; No live ammunition or explosives will be involved although some blank ammunition may be used.

Campers may hear sirens, wavering tones and verbal communication through loudspeakers. The military camp will not be open to the public or on display for visitors during the exercise.

Wilson Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District.

According to <a href="https://www.kansaspregame.com/article/6-man-all-star-game-coming-hays">Kansaspregame.com</a>, 24 players who graduated in 2022 from 15 schools will take part in the game which kicksoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.

The upcoming 2022 season will be the first time the 6-player football ranks will be sponsored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Since 2016, two sub-state champions and runners-up played in the Wild West Bowl in Dodge City.

The first two 6-player All-Star Classic were held at Bethel College in North Newton in 2019 and 2021.&nbsp;

🏈Hays set to host 6-Player All-Star Classic

STOCKTON — <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Solomon-Valley-Manor-106622180727456">Solomon Valley Manor</a> is building a new $6.5 million facility to replace its existing facility in Stockton.

The Solomon Valley Manor is owned and operated by the City of Stockton. The building is going to be at 315 S. Ash on land adjacent to the current facility.

The nonprofit has paid for $1.5 million of the facility's cost through operational savings, grants and private donations. The rest was financed through Solutions North Bank.

 Several years ago, officials started investigating repairs to its current facility, which is about 55 years old, said Amanda Atkisson, manor administrator.

Officials determined building a new facility would be more cost-efficient than trying to remodel the existing building.

"As we started thinking of the future, we thought about where we wanted to move health care," Atkisson said. "Where did we want to move long-term care and the amenities that we provide to our community going forward?"

Parkway Construction out of Lewisville, Texas, is the contractor on the building. It specializes in the design and construction of senior living facilities.

Ground was officially broken on the project in November. Officials hope to have the facility completed by December.

The new facility will have all private rooms with their own restroom/shower facilities, which will not only provide more privacy for residents but is being seen as a move to prevent the spread of infection within the facility.

Other improvements include separate spaces for dining and activities, as well as a separate space for the center's beauty salon. 

The living room in the current facility is near the front entrance of the facility and near the nurse's station. This area is noisy and not very private. Atkisson said the living room in the new facility is more private.

When the new facility is completed, officials plan to demolish the existing facility. This will leave space for future expansion of the new facility if needed, Atkisson said.

The current facility is licensed for 32 beds for nursing care. The new facility will be licensed for 30 beds.

Atkisson said demand is strong in the area for nursing care. The center maintains a waitlist. The center has eight people on its waitlist currently. Several more are on the list for the new facility.

Some of the people on the waitlist have been waiting more than a year.

Some families have been forced to find care for loved ones outside of the county. Others care for their loved ones at home or find caretakers for in-home care, Atkisson said.

"There is a very high demand because we are a very aging population," she said.

Atkisson said the current residents of the facility are anxiously watching the new facility go up next door. The plumber on the original building lives in the center and has been interested in the work. 

The center has also engaged the residents in picking out things such as paint colors and carpet samples.

"My male residents tend to watch the construction project and make sure that everything is going to plan there," Atkisson said. "My female residents are all about 'Which one is my room. Where's my room? When can I go look at it?' "

New nursing care facility under construction in Stockton

In many areas of Kansas, prolonged drought has resulted in short wheat and thin stands. Harvesting wheat in these situations can be a challenge. Special attention needs to be given to cutting height, machine adjustments, and operator control. In short wheat, getting the heads into the combine with less straw will be a challenge. In some cases, the reel may not be able to effectively convey the wheat back from the cutter bar to the auger, nor hold it in place during cutting. Short cutting will also mean more contact potential with the ground and reduced levels of surface residue which will likely negatively impact cropping systems in water-limited environments.

The ability to tip the&nbsp;cutterbar&nbsp;completely back will aid in keeping harvested crop material moving across the cutter bar and onto the belt as well as ensuring some stubble remains standing on the soil surface.&nbsp;

Flex heads will also help deal with the lower cutting heights and potential ground strikes. In thin&nbsp;stands&nbsp;of&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;it is even more important that sickles and guards are in good condition as there is less crop material pushing into the cutting area, which would normally help ensure cutting by worn sickles and guards.&nbsp;

If harvesting with a draper or flex header, maintain the cutting height as high as possible to preserve standing stubble. Typically, cutting wheat at two-thirds of its full height will result in&nbsp;losses of less than 0.5 percent as any missed heads contain light weight grain that will be lost as tailings during the harvesting process.

Conventional headers&nbsp;- for many farmers, new equipment may not be an economical choice and you may have to make do with a conventional head on your combine. In this case, adjust the reel to get the best movement of the heads from the cutter bar to the auger.&nbsp;

CAMPBELL: Considerations when harvesting short wheat

Kansas farmers cultivate more than crops through their checkoff contributions. Spending those dollars cultivating export markets directly benefits wheat growers and the general U.S. economy, according to a new econometric study by IHS Markit and Texas A&amp;M University.&nbsp;

Researchers concluded two export programs — the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Development (FMD) program — added an average of $9.6 billion per year to export value between 1977 and 2019. That’s great news for Kansas wheat growers, as roughly half of the Kansas wheat crop is exported each year.&nbsp;

“Our work indicated that MAP and FMD have accounted for 13.7% of all the revenue generated by U.S. agricultural exports between 1977 and 2019,” said Dr. Gary Williams, one of the lead agricultural economists on the project. “The additional export revenue bolsters the entire U.S. agricultural sector and creates a multiplier effect throughout the U.S. economy.”

Investment in export market development starts at the combine. The Kansas Wheat Commission is funded by a two-cent per bushel, voluntary assessment on each bushel of wheat grown in Kansas and sold to a Kansas grain elevator. The Kansas Wheat Commission uses those funds to invest in agronomic research projects, consumer outreach and supporting agricultural export market development as a contributing member of U.S. Wheat Associates (USW).&nbsp;

Wheat is the most trade-dependent of the major food and feed crops grown in the United States. But individual farming operations cannot effectively market wheat overseas. USW combines funding from 17 state wheat commission members with federal funding through the MAP and FMD programs to market U.S. wheat, including Kansas hard red winter (HRW), to customers around the world. USW staff and consultants add expertise in how best to use the various classes and qualities of U.S. wheat for end-products from loaves of bread to instant noodles to pasta and more. USW also works to address trade or technical barriers that inhibit the flow of wheat to world markets.&nbsp;

“These export market development programs enable U.S. Wheat Associates to build a critical reserve of trust and goodwill with our overseas buyers, end-users and influential government officials, as well as key U.S. government agencies and officials,” said USW President Vince Peterson. “And there is a clear return on investment — for every dollar spent on export promotion, there is a return of $24.50 in additional net export revenue —&nbsp;and the return is even higher to the U.S. wheat supply system.”

In addition to calculating the value of the MAP and FMD programs, researchers also analyzed the potential impact of the Agricultural Trade Promotion (ATP) program established by the USDA in 2019.&nbsp;

The ATP program provided $300 million to cooperating organizations like USW, and, in turn, these groups contributed $90 million in cash, goods and services. The study’s analysis of future expected returns from those investments between 2019 and 2026 predicts that incremental funding for agricultural export market development will provide an excellent return.

 </figure>Kansas farmers cultivate more than crops through their checkoff contributions. Spending those dollars cultivating export markets directly benefits wheat growers and the general U.S. economy, according to a new econometric study by IHS Markit and Texas A&amp;M University.&nbsp; Researchers concluded two export programs — the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Development (FMD) program — added an average of $9.6 billion per year to export value between 1977 and 2019. That’s great news for Kansas wheat growers, as roughly half of the Kansas wheat crop is exported each year.&nbsp; “Our work indicated that MAP and FMD have accounted for 13.7% of all the revenue generated by U.S. agricultural exports between 1977 and 2019,” said Dr. Gary Williams, one of the lead agricultural economists on the project. “The additional export revenue bolsters the entire U.S. agricultural sector and creates a multiplier effect throughout the U.S. economy.” Investment in export market development starts at the combine. The Kansas Wheat Commission is funded by a two-cent per bushel, voluntary assessment on each bushel of wheat grown in Kansas and sold to a Kansas grain elevator. The Kansas Wheat Commission uses those funds to invest in agronomic research projects, consumer outreach and supporting agricultural export market development as a contributing member of U.S. Wheat Associates (USW).&nbsp; Wheat is the most trade-dependent of the major food and feed crops grown in the United States. But individual farming operations cannot effectively market wheat overseas. USW combines funding from 17 state wheat commission members with federal funding through the MAP and FMD programs to market U.S. wheat, including Kansas hard red winter (HRW), to customers around the world. USW staff and consultants add expertise in how best to use the various classes and qualities of U.S. wheat for end-products from loaves of bread to instant noodles to pasta and more. USW also works to address trade or technical barriers that inhibit the flow of wheat to world markets.&nbsp; “These export market development programs enable U.S. Wheat Associates to build a critical reserve of trust and goodwill with our overseas buyers, end-users and influential government officials, as well as key U.S. government agencies and officials,” said USW President Vince Peterson. “And there is a clear return on investment — for every dollar spent on export promotion, there is a return of $24.50 in additional net export revenue —&nbsp;and the return is even higher to the U.S. wheat supply system.” In addition to calculating the value of the MAP and FMD programs, researchers also analyzed the potential impact of the Agricultural Trade Promotion (ATP) program established by the USDA in 2019.&nbsp; The ATP program provided $300 million to cooperating organizations like USW, and, in turn, these groups contributed $90 million in cash, goods and services. The study’s analysis of future expected returns from those investments between 2019 and 2026 predicts that incremental funding for agricultural export market development will provide an excellent return. Wheat Scoop: Study calculates solid return for investing in ag export market development

The registrar’s suite at Fort Hays State University now has a new name.

In a ceremony last week, those offices on the third floor of Picken Hall were named the Standlee V. Dalton Registrar’s Suite after the university’s legendary first registrar.

“When I think about the registrar’s office, I think about it representing the heart and integrity of this institution,” said Dr. Tisa Mason, FHSU president. “It gives us great joy to celebrate the work that this office does every single day and to honor the legacy of Mr. Dalton.”

The late Standlee V. Dalton was an icon of Fort Hays State. He joined the university faculty in 1935 as a biology instructor, teaching botany, biology, and bacteriology. As the university grew, there became a need for a full-time registrar. Dalton was named the first registrar of FHSU in 1937, and he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1971.

Dalton served Fort Hays State as registrar through four presidents and made friends with faculty, staff, administration, and students along the way. While in the biology department, Dalton shared an office with Lyman Wooster and stood as his best man at his wedding. Wooster went on to become the fourth president of FHSU in 1941.

Dalton was also friends with Dr. Morton Albertson and was considered a regular when it came to attending fossil digs with George Sternberg or helping in the apple orchard and faculty garden behind Custer Hall. Dalton was among the group that traveled to Gove County with Sternberg 70 years ago to successfully collect and bring the world-famous fish-within-a-fish fossil back to campus.

Dalton loved teaching biology and working with the FHSU students. Throughout his tenure as registrar, he continued to teach classes because he treasured his time teaching and surrounding himself with students. He also wanted to be on both sides of faculty and administration.&nbsp; Dalton’s only son, Standlee H. “Bud” Dalton, was in attendance to commemorate the naming and dedication of his father in Picken Hall last week. Bud grew up on the FHSU campus, moving to Hays at the age of 2. Bud was ecstatic about the naming of the registrar’s suite in memory of his dad. “If my dad were alive today, he would be super impressed and amazed at what Fort Hays State has become and all that it is,” Bud remarked. “It was such a small school back then and we couldn’t fathom the growth that it has had and its importance to the university system.”

Standlee V. Dalton passed away in 2004 at the age of 103. His love for Fort Hays State was immense and will live on through those who knew him and in the naming of the Standlee V. Dalton Registrar’s Suite.

The suite is the second area on campus to bear Dalton’s name. The “Pieces of the World” art sculpture outside Tomanek Hall was dedicated in honor of Dalton and James Kellerman in 1997. Dalton and Kellerman were the university’s first two registars who collectively served in that position for 57 years.

Nearly 20 members of the Dalton family were on hand for the ceremony, including Tom Dalton from the Kansas City area, a grandson of Standlee V.

Tom Dalton said that his grandfather would be “humbled and proud of this honor and excited for the future of Fort Hays State and its vision for generations to come.”

“Leading the Office of the Registrar was the role he cherished most,” Tom said, “because he loved people and loved being the first point of contact for every student who set foot on campus. If he could greet students today, Stan would tell them to embrace the future, to remain optimistic, and to never stop learning. Never be afraid to adapt and evolve.”

FHSU celebrates university icon with naming of registrar’s suite

BUNKER HILL — The Dane G. Hansen Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $85,000 to help support the station’s educational mission.&nbsp; These funds will help with the following:

• Produce local programs like&nbsp;Doctors On Call,&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature, sports programs featuring high school athletes in Northwest Kansas, and special events of interest to viewers in Northwest Kansas.

• Children’s educational programs from PBS KIDS, broadcasting 61 commercial-free hours each week, and at least 126 weekly hours on our PBS Kids channel.

• Broadcast educational programs for teens and adults, focusing on current events, science, history, and culture.

• Provide books to children enrolled in Early Head Start and Head Start.

• Operate and maintain the equipment to produce and broadcast educational and cultural programs.

Dane G. Hansen provides $85K grant to Smoky Hills PBS

Stephen and Melissa Bigge have taken ownership of the former Warren's Meat Market in Hays, operating under <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BiggEMeats">Bigg E Meats</a>, 1010 E. 29th.

Stephen Bigge is the sixth generation farming land near Stockton. His family has both a crop and a ranch operation in Rooks County.

The Bigges had been selling quarter, halves and whole beefs off their farm and had an interest in ramping up farm-to-customer selling prior to the pandemic.

The Bigges were lucky in that they already had slaughter dates prior to the backlog at meatpacking plants setting in during the pandemic, Melissa said.

The meat market closed temporarily for cleaning and remodeling and reopened in mid-April under the Bigges' ownership.

The Bigges carry both meat raised from their farm and fresh-cut boxed meat from wholesalers. The farm-fresh meat is raised on the Bigges' farm, as well as on a farm owned by Stephen's college roommate.

The Bigges' farm beef is grass-fed, grain-finished. The calves start with cows, then are put on a grow ration and finally finished at a feedlot. The final stage in the feedlot helps to promote marbling.

The Bigges' farm beef is dry-aged for 14 days. Whereas much of the meat that comes from large packing plants is finished through a quicker process known as wet-aging. Stephen Bigge said the dry-aging enhances the flavor.

Bigge said the boxed meats' quality is comparable to other meat retailers in the community. 

"We all strive to turn out a quality product," he said.

Stephen Bigge said the meat market provides a different level of service compared to big-box grocery stores.

When the meat market is out of a certain cut, they go to the freezer and cut more. You can talk directly with Justin Bollig, who is Bigg E's director of production and meat cutting. You can consult him on choosing cuts of meat or get recommendations on how to cook a cut of meat,  Bigge said.

Bigge acknowledged food is a large percentage of families' incomes and said he wants to be competitive.

"We want to provide locally sourced products at an affordable price," he said.

In addition to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LetitRiseLLC">Let It Rise</a> bread mixes from Hays, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TommySuesHOMEMADENOODLES">Tommy Sues Noodles</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Beckys-Bierocks-193628126719">Becky's Bierocks</a> from St. Francis and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jacksgourmetseasoning">Jack's Gourmet Seasoning</a> from Russell, the store is now carrying <a href="https://almacheese.com/">Alma cheese</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/papabaldys">Papa Baldy's popcorn</a> raised in McPherson.

The store also carries deli items, such as ham salad, chicken salad and raw burger, and specialty items like Rocky Mountain oysters and a variety of fresh-ground brats and sausages that are made on site.

"As we continue to learn and refine the recipes and add new products, we hope to get to the point where we're a local source for regionally produced products," Stephen Bigge said.

Bigge is already working with a family in Ohio to bring in maple syrup.

"Ultimately, our goal is to tell the story of agriculture and where food comes from and how it got to the table," Melissa Bigge said. "We want to let people know it's safe."

Stephen Bigge gave the example of their sausage. He said when a customer comes in and wants to know what is in their sausage, staff can tell them exactly what is in the sausage because it is made in-house.

The Bigges also take special requests, such as liver for pets or bones for broth.

Melissa said she thought the pandemic has brought to light the need for local food sources, such as local meat markets.

Stephen said it's important to support local farmers and ranchers, because it is not an easy lifestyle.

"A lot of the [farm-fresh] meat we have in the cooler right now is stuff that I raised," Stephen said. "I know when the animals were born. I know how they were taken care of. I know how they were raised and taken care of. I know when I took them to get processed and that they were processed humanely."

Sixth-generation farm family reopens Hays market as Bigg E Meats

COLBY — Biology program director Dr. Jeffrey Sekavec is the recipient of the 2022 Colby Community College Tangeman Award for Teaching Excellence. The announcement came at the college's commencement ceremony on May 13 at the Colby Event Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tangeman Award was established in 1988 and named after the school's second president, Dr. James Tangeman, who served at CCC from 1972 to 1988. Each year the selection is made by a committee of previous recipients and current CCC students.

Sekavec is a CCC alumnus, and his ties to the college span more than two decades. His father is the late Dr. Jay Sekavec, the supervising dentist for the dental hygiene program. In 2018, the facility on campus was named the Dr. Jay G. Sekavec D.D.S. Lab.

Jeff graduated from CCC in 2004 and became close to acclaimed late chemistry instructor Dr. Max Pickerill. At one point, he lived for a semester in Pickerill's basement. Sekavec got his first experience in higher education instruction when team-teaching summer chemistry and then taught all of Pickerill's courses the semester he fell ill.

Sekavec said he was raised as a United States Air Force "brat" and lived and visited all over Asia. He later joined the Air Force and played football for the Falcons.&nbsp;

His diverse background includes working in law enforcement and training and consulting in the first responder realm. He has done graduate student teaching and research at Fort Hays State University and now serves as the Noyce STEM Education partnership site director. Aside from his role as biology program director at CCC, he is the STEM division chair.

For fun, Sekavec attends USAF Academy football games with his family and friends. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and catching up with CCC alumni.

His associate of science degree in chemistry from Colby Community College was the starting point for a B.A. in biology from Bethany College, a master's degree in microbiology from Fort Hays State University, and a Doctor of Management with a concentration in homeland security from Colorado Technical University.

Throughout his career, Sekavec reflects on the teaching philosophy of his friend and mentor.

"As Dr. Pick always said, 'We don't teach a subject. We teach students.' The axiom is most certainly true as CCC changed my life!"

There is a 40 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms beginning after 1 a.m. Saturday. More rain is possible Saturday afternoon, continuing through Saturday evening.

There is a 20 percent to 40 percent chance of additional showers or thunderstorms Sunday through Tuesday.

After 'beautiful Thursday,' chance of rain returns this weekend

Families with students entering kindergarten through eighth grade may qualify for scholarships to attend Holy Family Elementary or Thomas More Prep-Marian.

These scholarships are provided by the Catholic Diocese of Salina through its Scholarship Granting Organization.

Qualified students must be new to Hays Catholic Schools and in their first year attending any grade from kindergarten through eighth.

Also, the students need to qualify as free or reduced-cost in the federal lunch program.

For those students entering kindergarten, they must be less than 6 years old by the first day of school.

If a student qualifies, they may be able to receive the scholarship each year they attend all the way through to high school graduation.

TOPEKA — Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland on Wednesday announced two new hires for the agency. Jade Piros de Carvalho will serve as the new Director of the Office of Broadband Development, and Patrick Lowry has been named the Director of Marketing and Communications.

Jade Piros de Carvalho is a seasoned broadband executive with experience in government affairs, community relations, business development and marketing for the Kansas-based rural broadband provider, IdeaTek. Along with managing advocacy efforts for broadband expansion policy, Piros de Carvalho also spearheaded digital equity efforts for the company. She will direct Commerce’s efforts to drive growth and expansion of broadband throughout the state.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Jade to our Commerce team. Her breadth of knowledge and experience with broadband development will take us to the next level,” Toland said.&nbsp;“Jade will work tirelessly to ensure that we have the programs in place to expand broadband access across the entire state.”
