Cole Berry, a junior at Fort Hays State University,&nbsp;has been selected as one of only 173 Newman Civic Fellows for the 2022-23 year.&nbsp;Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education,&nbsp;recently&nbsp;announced its&nbsp;list of&nbsp;Newman&nbsp;Civic Fellows for the upcoming year.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program for students from Campus Compact member institutions who are nominated by their institution’s president or chancellor. The students selected for the fellowship are leaders on their campuses who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions to local, national, or international challenges.

Originally from Garden City, Berry spent several years in Stockton before moving to Topeka, which he has called home for the past 11 years. Berry is planning on graduating in the spring of 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in leadership studies, with a concentration in organizational leadership.&nbsp;

While Berry could have attended any number of universities after high school, he chose Fort Hays State for several reasons. Like many high school students, he didn’t have a specific major in mind when it came time to look at colleges.&nbsp;

Among the materials Berry received from FHSU while researching schools, he discovered information on the leadership studies programs. He liked how this area of study was applicable to a variety of career options.&nbsp;

Berry recalls how the youth pastor at the church he attended in Hays when he was young had a degree in organizational leadership. As youth ministry is one of the career options that interests him, Berry believed pursuing a degree in organizational leadership would help prepare him for the future.

Additionally, Berry had another connection to the university as his father is a graduate of FHSU. The combination of familiarity and program offerings made Fort Hays State the perfect choice. &nbsp;

While he may have been uncertain of his future direction in high school, Berry has found a way to walk his own path since beginning his journey at Fort Hays State. In his Newman Civic Fellows personal statement, he said, “throughout my academic career so far, I have made sure to find churches and organizations where I can serve youth and be present in their lives.”

“My hopes with pursuing a degree in Organizational Leadership are that I will be better equipped to step into the world and lead others to address issues and make a difference in the lives of children and families.”&nbsp;

“Cole Berry is a dedicated and accomplished student and has illustrated his commitment to engaged civic leadership both in and out of the classroom,” FHSU President Tisa Mason wrote in her nomination statement. She also pointed out that Berry’s “passion is to serve and set an example for children and youth and to mentor the next generation of leaders; leaders who will be faced with global complexities that have yet to be imagined.”&nbsp;

In addition to this fellowship, Mason said that Berry has been selected to participate in the 2022-23 Voss Advanced Leadership Undergraduate Experience (VALUE) through the Leadership Studies Department and will be focused on the application of adaptive leadership to solve real world problems.

Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides Fellows with a variety of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth. Each year, fellows participate in numerous training and networking opportunities to help them develop the skills and connections they need to create large-scale positive change. The cornerstone of the fellowship is the two-day Annual Convening of Fellows, which offers intensive skill-building and networking. The fellowship also provides cohort students with opportunities to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

The Newman Fellowship is named for the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders, who was a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education. In the spirit of Dr. Newman’s leadership, Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors nominate student leaders from their campuses to be named Newman Civic Fellows.

FHSU’s Berry named a Newman Civic Fellow

SMITH COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Thursday in Smith County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 GMC Acadia driven by Marlene Ruth Benjamin, 61, Smith Center, was at the stop sign on Kansas 8, waiting to turn eastbound on U.S. 36.

The driver failed to yield right of way to a 2018 Freightliner semi driven by Rodney Dean Emery, 53, Clearwater, and entered U.S. 36. 

The semi moved into the westbound lane to avoid the GMC. The vehicles collided on their passenger sides.

EMS transported Benjamin to Smith County Memorial Hospital. Emery was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hayli Meier of Hays High School has been selected for the Governor's Scholars Awards Program.

The awards were presented on May 1 in Topeka. 

The recognition ceremony honors the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors. Scholars are selected from accredited public and private schools in the state.

"These high school seniors have shown dedication in their studies and a commitment to learning. They've earned this honor, and I want to congratulate them on this achievement," Governor Laura Kelly said. "We also should recognize their families, teachers and mentors for helping these outstanding students achieve their academic goals.'' 

This program is coordinated for the governor by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force and is funded by donations from private sector businesses in Kansas.

The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force was formed 39 years ago to strengthen public confidence in education.

The following organizations are members of the Task Force: American Association of University Women, Kansas State Board of Education, Kansas Association of School Boards, Kansas Congress of Parents and Teachers, Kansas State Department of Education, Kansas State High School Activities Association, Kansas National Education Association, Kansas League of Women Voters, and United School Administrators of Kansas.

Ellis senior takes part in elite statewide awards program

The Kansas Drought Monitor has Ellis County still listed in severe drought as of the map's release Thursday.

Areas near the Nebraska border range from severe to extreme drought, according to the monitor.

Historically severe drought has been associated with low yields for wheat, corn and soybean. It can also cause blue-green algae blooms in water supplies.

Hays has received 4.27 inches of precipitation this year, but usually receives 7.81 inches of precipitation by the end of May.

There is a chance for showers this afternoon in Hays. Showers and thunderstorms are likely before midnight, but accumulation is only forecast for between a tenth and quarter of an inch.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast for Saturday, but then the forecast is for sunny and dry through mid-week.

Ellis County remains in severe drought

Ellis USD 388 Board of Education approves calling for $4.55 million bond election in September

ELLIS — Two years after work began, the Ellis USD 388 Board
of Education Monday night approved the calling of a bond election.

On Sept. 8 voters within the USD 388 school district will
decide a $4.55 million bond issue that would be used to “construct, equip and
furnish renovations, improvements and additions to Ellis High School/Junior
High, including science lab renovations, secure entry improvements, and roof
replacement,” according to the resolution to call for a bond election.

The measure would also “construct, equip and furnish
renovations and improvements to the Washington Elementary School building,
including HVAC replacement, electrical service upgrades, flooring replacement,
painting, and roof replacement” and other “necessary appurtenant improvements.”

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e446ebb65b5d31438496648">The
vote is just the latest action in a process that began in February 2020, just as the
pandemic was beginning to affect the area.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e1e18c07d7daa72b30eae49">A
survey at that time indicated a significant majority would support a bond as
high as $4 million. Nearly half of the respondents supported a bond up to $5
million.</a>

But with economic uncertainty on the horizon, the board decided it was prudent to pause the effort.

Then as conversations began about the bond issue ramped up again
in the fall, a spring election looked possible until<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/3c747379-8a21-4352-96b2-32f0be161090"> the decision
was put on hold as the board awaited the outcome of proposed legislation in the Kansas Legislature.</a>

Had the legislation passed, the district would have been eligible for&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/3c747379-8a21-4352-96b2-32f0be161090">up to 20 percent matching funds from the state.</a>

The legislation failed to move out of
committee, and so in April, the board decided to once again take up the bond
resolution.

At Monday’s regular board meeting, the body once again took
up the measure and, with little discussion, moved to a vote.

“You guys have seen the project list,” said Superintendent
Corey Burton. He said it had been tweaked to reflect uncertainty in materials
pricing, but closely reflected what a majority of residents had previously said
they would support. 

“Keeping to the basics,” he said. “I think that is what
we’ve heard over the years is keep it to the basics and we’ll support you.”

“It’s going to get us the things we need as a school
district,” he continued. “So, I believe we can get the process going.”

Board member Jared Schiel then presented a motion to accept
the resolution as presented, board member Dean Gottschalk offered a second and
with the full board present, the measure was passed unanimously.

renovations and improvements to the Washington Elementary School building,
including HVAC replacement, electrical service upgrades, flooring replacement,

vote is just the latest action in a process that began in February 2020, just as the
pandemic was beginning to affect the area.</a><a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e1e18c07d7daa72b30eae49">A
survey at that time indicated a significant majority would support a bond as
high as $4 million. Nearly half of the respondents supported a bond up to $5
million.</a>But with economic uncertainty on the horizon, the board decided it was prudent to pause the effort.<figure>

committee, and so in April, the board decided to once again take up the bond
resolution.At Monday’s regular board meeting, the body once again took
up the measure and, with little discussion, moved to a vote.<figure>

we’ve heard over the years is keep it to the basics and we’ll support you.”“It’s going to get us the things we need as a school
district,” he continued. “So, I believe we can get the process going.”Board member Jared Schiel then presented a motion to accept
the resolution as presented, board member Dean Gottschalk offered a second and
with the full board present, the measure was passed unanimously.

TOPEKA&nbsp;—&nbsp;This year marks the 26th&nbsp;anniversary of section 529 in the federal tax code, which makes it possible to open a 529 education savings plan. The State of Kansas Treasurer’s Office has planned visits to museums across the state in celebration of this anniversary — culminating with a final event on May 29 to officially recognize 529 Day.

During each visit, the Treasurer and his staff will hand out informational materials about Learning Quest 529 accounts, and participants attending the event will be entered to win a random drawing for $1,000 to establish a Learning Quest 529 account or add the cash to an existing Learning Quest 529 account.

“I encourage Kansans to come visit with me as we are out and about across the state. We want to do our best to make sure that folks know about this opportunity to save for the next step in their education journey. We know that supporting education savings means supporting the future workforce of Kansas,” said&nbsp;Treasurer Lynn Rogers.

With the rising costs of education, Learning Quest 529 saving plans offer Kansas families an opportunity to save for school and enjoy tax benefits, all while reducing the burden of student loan debt. 

Any U.S. citizen or resident may open an account or be a beneficiary. There are no age or income requirements, and anyone can contribute any amount to the accounts up to $435,000. Funds can be used to cover costs of public, private, community, technical, and vocational schools as well as registered apprenticeship programs, and student debt.

State treasurer to promote 529 Day in Hays this month

I love the Nelson Mandela quote, “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” That is a beautiful description of the resilience for which Fort Hays State University is known.

Resilience is on constant display by our adult learners, who often juggle jobs, family, and school. There are first-generation students who struggle with the guilt of leaving their families and financial responsibilities at home while they navigate an unfamiliar environment of higher education. There are also students who have experienced a blend of failed and ultimately successful attempts on a graphic design project, research project, business star-up competition, or running for a campus leadership position. At the root of resilience is grit, determination, and the patience to play the “long game.”

I see this quote in action every day as I listen to remarkable stories of courage and transformation from students and alumni as well as from faculty and staff.&nbsp;

One of the greatest privileges of being a university president is to be present to celebrate our people – knowing that each diploma, each award, and every ceremony is not only about the glorious outcome, but it is equally about the discipline of getting back up after each stumble or fall.

So today, I dedicate this column to the 1,178 undergraduate students and 624 graduate students who are receiving diplomas this weekend.

One student walking across the stage is Alec Bevis from Wichita. Alec is receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry. You may recognize Alec’s name as our 2022 Torch Award recipient, the highest honor for our undergraduate students at FHSU. The award is given&nbsp;on the basis of&nbsp;classroom excellence, leadership, participation in professional organizations, and involvement in student, civic, or research activities.&nbsp;

Alec is a team captain of our men’s soccer squad and was named to the United States Coaches Scholar All-America Team. He has also been a highly engaged member of our&nbsp;Honors&nbsp;College as well as a student assistant for the chemistry department.

During his time at FHSU, Alec engaged in undergraduate research under the mentorship of Dr. James&nbsp;Balthazor.

“I am excited to see where Alec’s future takes him,” Dr.&nbsp;Balthazor&nbsp;said. “He was accepted to a Ph.D. program in biochemistry at the University of Kansas, and he has already found the girl of his dreams, as he says it. I cannot wait to see what he does as an alumnus of FHSU.”

I believe the Nelson Mandela quote is so applicable to Alec. In his own words: “through soccer, I have not only learned how to persevere through strenuous physical activity but also learned many invaluable life skills such as time management and leadership, and because of it, I have formed relationships with friends all around the world.”

I love how Dr.&nbsp;Balthazor&nbsp;describes Alec: “He embodies everything I love about being a Tiger. As humble as they come, Alec doesn’t think he deserves the accolades, but he genuinely deserves them. I will miss seeing him every day, and his shoes will be difficult to fill.”

Another student walking across the stage will be Alison&nbsp;Helget&nbsp;from Hays,&nbsp;dogsitter&nbsp;for&nbsp;FHSU’s&nbsp; “First Dog,” Dakota Grace Mason. Alison received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in history from Fort Hays State and is one of two Lighthouse Award recipients, the graduate version of the undergraduate Pilot Award.

Alison is the perfect example of resilience and the powerful impact made by caring faculty who fuel that determination when the going gets tough.&nbsp;

“Once I started my graduate program, the professors pushed me even harder as a scholar, supporting me throughout several conference presentations and publication reviews,” Alison said. “With constant reaffirmation, I began believing in myself. As a result, I have chosen to take another leap of faith and pursue a doctorate, something that I could not have even imagined four years ago.”&nbsp;

“As I move on, wherever it may be, I will never forget the amazing faculty I met at FHSU

and the way they kept me focused, even when all odds might have been against me,” Alison continued. “When I hit rock bottom, the history department took me in and has since watched me transform from a timid girl into a strong, independent woman, who is proud to call herself a Tiger.”

Mary&nbsp;Kathy Robb, also a Lighthouse Award recipient, is graduating with a Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in ceramics. Artists are often known for their discipline as well as for their persistence – doing something that is difficult or even opposed by other people. Artists make us stop and think.

Linda&nbsp;Ganstrom, professor of ceramics,&nbsp;said that Robb&nbsp;captures these qualities well.

“Kathy is an early riser and was often in the studio hard at work as I started my day,” she said. “She is helpful, challenging, and encouraging of her fellow artists. Kathy has big ideas, gained the skill to realize them, and put in the hard work to bring her dreams to life.”

“As a child, she was a dancer and performer,” Professor&nbsp;Ganstrom&nbsp;continued. “She was expected to build a successful corporate career but never found the satisfaction she had felt in her creative endeavors. So, she went back to school and learned the skills she needed to express herself and tell her stories of love, danger, abuse, and fear.”&nbsp;

Kathy&nbsp;Robb’s decision to leave her corporate career and pursue her passion propelled her into the world of art. That led her to FHSU, where she fully engaged the opportunity to develop her potential and skills as an artist. She has become an influencer, a cultural provocateur. She uses her art to help people understand that we are all on this planet together and should be appreciative and help each other survive and thrive.

Woven into all three of these stories – and I would bet of the lifeline of every Fort Hays State student – are moments of&nbsp;falling down, getting back up, learning, and growing. And sharing the floor of the coliseum with our graduates this weekend will be our outstanding professors – the people who helped to get our students across the stage amidst their own “moments of getting back up.”

The W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship’s Department of Applied Business Studies at Fort Hays State University recently announced its list of seven outstanding graduating students for 2022.&nbsp;

The Outstanding Student Award recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional academic performance, leadership, and overall excellence in their respective program. The student chosen for this award serves as a role model, one who epitomizes the core values of the awarding program. The awards are given annually to one on-campus student and one virtual student. Each student receives a commemorative plaque to celebrate this outstanding honor. This year, an international student was also recognized from one of FHSU’s international partner schools.&nbsp;

Ellis senior receives Outstanding Graduate Award from FHSU Dept. of Applied Business Studies

Hays USD 489 is looking forward to the next steps now that its $143.5 million bond issue passed.

The bond passed Tuesday with a 53 percent approval from district voters. In addition, a question that would implement a half-cent city of Hays sales tax to help pay for the bond passed with 60 percent of&nbsp; the voters marking yes.

"I think what this means, as we've looked at this whole process, people have said we want to invest in our kids, we want to invest in our educational staff, and we want to invest in our community," Hays Superintendent Ron Wilson said. "They said this is important and this is what needs to happen in the community of Hays."

The main project under the bond will be the construction of a new high school, which will include an auditorium. The bond will also <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2a94d25d-ba77-49d6-9665-2651a7667965">renovate the current high school into a middle school and renovate the current middle school into an elementary school. Roosevelt and O'Loughlin elementary schools also will be renovated.</a>

Lincoln Elementary School and Rockwell Administration Center will be closed. The Westside school program will be relocated.

Voter turnout in the special election was almost 38 percent with 6,024 voters casting ballots for the bond question. During the special bond election in 2016 only 27 percent of eligible voters cast ballots.

Wilson said he was extremely pleased with voter turnout. 

"We said from the beginning that we always felt we had more support than opposition," he said. "As long as we could get those who supported to get out and vote, we could get this accomplished."

The city of Hays half-cent bond sales tax will take effect on Oct. 1. That tax will be in effect for 10 years. The new tax will increase the city tax rate from 8.75 percent to 9.25 percent.

The property tax will begin with the 2022-23 budget, which will be included on property tax statements received by patrons in November 2022.&nbsp;

You can see an estimate of how much more you will be paying on your property tax bill on the <a href="https://www.usd489.com/page/finance-information">USD 489 website</a>. However, the exact tax amount will not be determined until the interest rate is locked in when the bonds are issued.

The district officials and the district's architectural firm, DLR, will be meeting with staff who work in the district's buildings to assess the specific needs of each school.

"They know better than anybody else because they are in the buildings," Chrisy Crough, USD 489 outreach coordinator, said. "They will have the input on that and they will work with the architects directly and they will go back and forth with the drawings."

Then the architects will enter the design phase for the projects.

Wilson said he hoped ground could be broken on the new high school by next spring. The district hopes to have the new high school completed by August 2024 with the remaining projects completed by fall 2025.

The new high school will be built just east of the current high school on land that is already owned by the school district.

Civil engineers will be taking surveys of the land in the near term and looking at possible electrical and water line placement.

Wilson said having the new high school and the middle school adjacent to each other will benefit students and staff at both schools.

"I think it opens so many doors that we currently don't have open because of the location of the high school/middle school," Wilson said. "Naturally, the big thing is that we are going to have an auditorium for our high school, as well as our middle school."

High school students could work with middle school students. Students from both schools will be able to share athletic facilities. 

Middle school students will have access to the technical education facilities at the current high school. The middle school has been limited in the number of electives it can offer because of space constraints.

Traffic will increase on 13th Street and in the immediate area when the new school is built. Crough said the district will be working with the city and the Kansas Department of Transportation to do traffic studies and evaluate any changes that will need to be made in the road configuration in that area.

The entities can pursue grant money for improvements, Crough said.

The district also will be staggering start and release times at the middle school and high school to reduce traffic congestion.

New class sections will be added to both Roosevelt and O'Loughlin Elementary to accommodate the students who will be transferring from Wilson and Lincoln elementary schools.

Students will be evenly distributed among the remaining elementaries. Wilson said the district will continue to honor family choice for the district elementary schools.

The bond is going to allow the district to close its oldest buildings — Lincoln and Rockwell, which are both more than 90 years old. It will also help address many of the maintenance needs in the existing buildings. 

Wilson said this will free up capital outlay funds for other projects in the district. 

"We haven't had a lot of flexibility in our capital improvement budget, he said. "We have been spending dollars to keep the boat on the water and not have it sink."

Wilson said he is excited about what the bond will bring for the future of the district.

"We are really proud of what we do in USD 489, but with the passing of this bond, I think it is about how proud we can become ...&nbsp; " Wilson said. "It is going to open some things that we have dealt with for a long, long time.

"It was a tough, tough process. It's been a lot of work, and a lot of dedicated, committed people in our community came together and rallied together to make this happen. I am appreciative and feel really blessed to have been a part of that."

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostHays USD 489 is looking forward to the next steps now that its $143.5 million bond issue passed.The bond passed Tuesday with a 53 percent approval from district voters. In addition, a question that would implement a half-cent city of Hays sales tax to help pay for the bond passed with 60 percent of&nbsp; the voters marking yes."I think what this means, as we've looked at this whole process, people have said we want to invest in our kids, we want to invest in our educational staff, and we want to invest in our community," Hays Superintendent Ron Wilson said. "They said this is important and this is what needs to happen in the community of Hays." The main project under the bond will be the construction of a new high school, which will include an auditorium. The bond will also <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2a94d25d-ba77-49d6-9665-2651a7667965">renovate the current high school into a middle school and renovate the current middle school into an elementary school. Roosevelt and O'Loughlin elementary schools also will be renovated.</a>Lincoln Elementary School and Rockwell Administration Center will be closed. The Westside school program will be relocated.<figure>

 </figure>Voter turnout in the special election was almost 38 percent with 6,024 voters casting ballots for the bond question. During the special bond election in 2016 only 27 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. Wilson said he was extremely pleased with voter turnout. "We said from the beginning that we always felt we had more support than opposition," he said. "As long as we could get those who supported to get out and vote, we could get this accomplished."The city of Hays half-cent bond sales tax will take effect on Oct. 1. That tax will be in effect for 10 years. The new tax will increase the city tax rate from 8.75 percent to 9.25 percent. The property tax will begin with the 2022-23 budget, which will be included on property tax statements received by patrons in November 2022.&nbsp;You can see an estimate of how much more you will be paying on your property tax bill on the <a href="https://www.usd489.com/page/finance-information">USD 489 website</a>. However, the exact tax amount will not be determined until the interest rate is locked in when the bonds are issued.<figure>

 </figure>The district officials and the district's architectural firm, DLR, will be meeting with staff who work in the district's buildings to assess the specific needs of each school."They know better than anybody else because they are in the buildings," Chrisy Crough, USD 489 outreach coordinator, said. "They will have the input on that and they will work with the architects directly and they will go back and forth with the drawings." Then the architects will enter the design phase for the projects.Wilson said he hoped ground could be broken on the new high school by next spring. The district hopes to have the new high school completed by August 2024 with the remaining projects completed by fall 2025.The new high school will be built just east of the current high school on land that is already owned by the school district.Civil engineers will be taking surveys of the land in the near term and looking at possible electrical and water line placement. Wilson said having the new high school and the middle school adjacent to each other will benefit students and staff at both schools."I think it opens so many doors that we currently don't have open because of the location of the high school/middle school," Wilson said. "Naturally, the big thing is that we are going to have an auditorium for our high school, as well as our middle school."High school students could work with middle school students. Students from both schools will be able to share athletic facilities. Middle school students will have access to the technical education facilities at the current high school. The middle school has been limited in the number of electives it can offer because of space constraints. Traffic will increase on 13th Street and in the immediate area when the new school is built. Crough said the district will be working with the city and the Kansas Department of Transportation to do traffic studies and evaluate any changes that will need to be made in the road configuration in that area.The entities can pursue grant money for improvements, Crough said. The district also will be staggering start and release times at the middle school and high school to reduce traffic congestion. New class sections will be added to both Roosevelt and O'Loughlin Elementary to accommodate the students who will be transferring from Wilson and Lincoln elementary schools.Students will be evenly distributed among the remaining elementaries. Wilson said the district will continue to honor family choice for the district elementary schools. The bond is going to allow the district to close its oldest buildings — Lincoln and Rockwell, which are both more than 90 years old. It will also help address many of the maintenance needs in the existing buildings. Wilson said this will free up capital outlay funds for other projects in the district. "We haven't had a lot of flexibility in our capital improvement budget, he said. "We have been spending dollars to keep the boat on the water and not have it sink."Wilson said he is excited about what the bond will bring for the future of the district. Hays USD 489 looks forward to new building, renovations under bond

Imagine a classroom with a teacher at the whiteboard and students at their work stations, joined by mobile robots through which additional students can participate in the class from another school miles away.&nbsp;

Robots in the classroom?&nbsp;&nbsp;Is this a futuristic movie?&nbsp;

No, it is happening right now, in schools in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Pam Irwin is superintendent of USD 240, which serves the communities of Bennington and Tescott. Each community has a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade center. Pam is a native of Hays with four degrees from Fort Hays State and 29 years of education experience. She works with Anissa Bigler, a Council Grove native who is a K-State grad and now teaching in USD 240.&nbsp;

Pam became school superintendent in July 2020. The school board charged her with expanding the educational offerings for students in the district.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Rural Education Center in Kansas State University’s College of Education had successfully applied for two federal distance learning technology grants that would fund and deploy what were called “telepresence robots” in rural schools. Spencer Clark, director of the Rural Education Center, said there were 29 Kansas sites receiving the robots, two of which were in USD 240.&nbsp;

What is a telepresence robot? It is essentially an Ipad on motorized wheels that can be controlled remotely, allowing an online student to have a mobile, virtual presence in the classroom without being physically present.&nbsp;

Unlike a stationary camera or computer, the student can direct the robot to move so as to see a lesson somewhere in a classroom or to join a small group discussion or group project.&nbsp;

In USD 240, Pam Irwin approached high school English teacher Anissa Bigler about trying this technology in her classroom. Now students at Tescott High School can join Bigler’s class in Bennington through the robots.&nbsp;

When class begins, the Tescott students log on to their laptops at the school and connect to the robot in Mrs. Bigler’s classroom. “I start teaching my lesson at the whiteboard and I call on them or they volunteer answers, just as if they were in my classroom,” Bigler said. When the teacher moves through the room, the robot can also move, come closer to see the whiteboard, or join a discussion group.&nbsp;

“I think a huge benefit is that it doesn’t tie the teacher to the front of the room like a Zoom call does,” Irwin said.&nbsp;

“Allowing the students access to each other is my favorite thing about this,” Bigler said.&nbsp;

As with many new technologies, there was a challenging learning curve at first. Now the benefits are being realized.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What type of grade would Bigler give to the robot system? “Last fall I might have given it a C minus, but now it is almost to the A range,” she said. “It has so much potential.”&nbsp;

On one of the first days, the students connected to the wrong robots, which were then sent roaming the school hallways until they figured it out. In order to solve this problem, they have now identified each robot using names from the old television show, the Jetsons. The robots are named Astro, Elwood, Jetson, and so forth.&nbsp;

Irwin feels strongly that students in rural schools or smaller schools shouldn’t be penalized by distance. “All kids should have the same opportunities and we hope this will expand our students’ access to educational offerings,” she said.&nbsp;

“There are many advantages to the robots,” one student said.&nbsp;

“It makes it a lot easier to do group work and projects,” said another student.&nbsp;

“I feel more connected to the class,” said student Raven Peterson.&nbsp;

How remarkable to find this innovative technology in schools in rural communities such as Bennington, population 622, and Tescott, population 265 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are robots in the classroom, but this isn’t Star Trek. It is an innovative school in rural Kansas. We commend Pam Irwin, Anissa Bigler, and especially the students who are making a difference by pioneering this technology.&nbsp;

In these schools, the future is now.&nbsp;

Hays Young Professionals street dance scheduled in June

Allison Hillebrand and Isabelle Braun became accustomed to performing well on the national stage in high school. But their recent success on the collegiate level was even more special.

 </figure>FHSU University CommunicationsAllison Hillebrand and Isabelle Braun became accustomed to performing well on the national stage in high school. But their recent success on the collegiate level was even more special.The Fort Hays State University students, both from Hays, made the finals and finished in the top 10 at the DECA Collegiate International Career Development Conference last month in Baltimore, Md.Both excelled in DECA, formerly the&nbsp;Distributive Education Clubs of America, during their careers at Hays High School. Now college roommates, the duo decided to team up this year to compete in the advertising campaign category.Hillebrand is working on a double major (English and PR/advertising) at FHSU, and Braun is majoring in marketing. They developed an advertising campaign for Ten-O-Seven in Hays. Braun works full time&nbsp;as the assistant manager and social media coordinator for the local salon while taking classes online.After placing first at the state DECA competition at Tabor College in Hillsboro earlier this semester, Hillebrand and Braun decided to take their project to the international conference. They advanced to the finals, then were chosen as one of the top 10 finishers for their advertising campaign.Other FHSU students competing at nationals were Rheijan Villegas from Kansas City, Kan., and Trenton Godfrey from Junction City. They participated in the Sports and Entertaining Marketing competition but did not make the finals.
