HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fair is always about tradition and competition. One of the unusual and traditional competitions is the contest to see who can grow the largest pumpkin.&nbsp;

This year, the fair set a new record. Matt Jacobs of Stillwell, Kansas, broke the all-time record for the largest pumpkin, which came in at 1,280 pounds.

Other contests for the fair’s 10-day run include the youth pedal pull championships on Sunday, the best scarecrow contest, a biscuit bake off, best barbecue sauce contest, and a fresh salsa contest.

Those contests go along with the competitive exhibits that include food, photography, quilts, knitting and many other displays. The competitive displays are back in several buildings this year. The handiwork of Kansas residents is found at the Domestic Arts building, the Lake Talbott East and West buildings, the Pride of Kansas building and the Oz Gallery.

steady stream of voters entered the VFW Thursday to decide the fate of a $4.55
million bond issue for repairs and renovations in the district's two main buildings,
Washington Elementary and Ellis Jr./Sr. High School.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e1e18c07d7daa72b30eae49" target="_blank">And as predicted by a
2020 Docking Institute survey, voters overwhelmingly supported the measure with
preliminary results showing a final vote of 440-98.</a>

<a href="https://www.ellisco.net/DocumentCenter/View/4858/unofficial-results" target="_blank">Out
of 538 votes cast, 81.78 percent voted yes, and 18.22 percent voted no,
according to the Ellis County Clerk website.</a>

Board of Education president
Randy Honas said he was thankful for the support from the community.

He said he had never heard
much opposition but was still pleasantly surprised by the result, calling it a
“good showing and a great turnout.”

“They told us in the Docking
institute Study they would support a bond of this type and this amount,” Honas
said. “That’s what we ran, and they did what they said they would do,
overwhelmingly.”

“I’m just really happy for
the community and really proud of the community to come out and just do what
they said they were going to do,” he continued. “I couldn’t be prouder.”

Superintendent
Janice Wilson said the measure would positively impact the lives of the
students and staff.

“I think this gets Ellis on
the right track to making sure that our facilities are up to date and have the
opportunity to be where everybody else is,” Wilson said. “It’s been a long time
coming, and we are stoked and super excited because it’s important that Ellis
cares about their kids, and this proves it.”

She said the district would
now move into the design phase and find and hire contractors to do the work.

“Hopefully, we are on track
for next summer or even before to get this started,” Wilson said.

Ellis USD 388 bond issue proposal passes by wide margin

The Rush County Grocery has become the latest grocery store to close in rural Kansas, leaving that county without a full-service grocery store.

Rush County becomes the eighth county in northwest Kansas to have some portion categorized as a food desert.

A food desert is an area defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as low income, based on poverty rates and area median income levels. It is also considered low access, an area where people live more than 10 miles from a grocery store in a rural area and more than one mile from a grocery store in an urban area.

The nearest full-service grocery store will now be in Hays, 24 miles away.

Henry Motniel, owner of the store, expressed concern for the community members who now have to travel for food, especially the elderly and people who do not have vehicles.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/055d3db6-ea2f-405a-b860-9af0585281ae">The state closed the store Aug. 30 for the non-payment of taxes.</a>

Montiel took responsibility for the closure, but cited many pressures that have made owning and operating independent groceries in rural communities increasingly more difficult.

Increased competition from chain discount stores, inflation and lack of volume were all challenges, Montiel said.

Montiel had only owned the grocery store for a little more than a year, but had managed it for four years.

&nbsp;The community already had a Dollar General, and a Family Dollar opened within the last year in La Crosse.

"Those corporate businesses can order shiploads of products when us little mom and pops can only order $10,000 per week," Montiel said. "We're limited in what we can bring in."

The margin on groceries is narrow. Most groceries make their profit on volume, so Montiel said it can be challenging to do that in a community such as La Crosse, which has a population of only 1,266 people.

Large discount stores and grocery store chains can also negotiate better prices than independent groceries, also based on volume.

"It's frustrating, Montiel said of the corporate competition. "There's just enough pie to go around for everybody. ...

"Those corporate businesses don't help any local small-town owners. They're just moving in and pushing us out."

Montiel said he also struggled with cooler breakdowns. Most of his coolers were 30 years old. The store had several breakdowns in the four years he managed the store.

"One breakdown can put you upside down in a hurry," he said.

Finding capital was a challenge as well, Montiel said.

"It's a gamble for the banks because we are usually a break-even type of place," he said.

Full-service grocery stores also have high electric costs because of the coolers. The Rush County Grocery's electric bill was running $3,300 to $4,000 month. Montiel said he didn't have the capital to put in new coolers that would be more energy efficient.

Unlike discount stores, full-service grocery stores are affected more by spoilage because they carry fresh meat, produce, dairy and&nbsp; bread. They often make up for loses on fresh products with higher margins on packaged foods.

However, now many small community grocery stores are now competing against discount stores on those items.

Montiel said as inflation drove up the prices of perishables, the store lost more to spoilage while also facing higher wholesale prices.

Montiel said he was engaged in the community in ways corporate stores are not. He donated to local causes and often let hungry families charge food when they were down on their luck.

"I tried to help my community in any way I could," he said.

Rush County Economic Development Administrator Brad Penka said last week county officials are trying to find a new owner for the grocery store as soon as possible.

La Crosse grocery not alone in struggle to stay open in rural Kansas

The newly formed Hays High bowling team has set a fundraiser bowling tournament to outfit the team, and they hope community members will join them.

The Unified Bowling Roll-Off will be Sunday, Sept. 18, at Centennial Lanes in Hays. Check in will be at noon with the scrimmage starting at 12:30 p.m.

This will be the first season for bowling at HHS. Students will be able to participate in two seasons. The fall season is for unified teams. The regular season kicks off after winter break.

The regular season has six tournaments set with the possibility of two more, not including regionals or state.

During the unified season, students with intellectual disabilities are paired with general education students. Richard Hodges, coach, said this will allow students of all abilities to compete on the team. The team will take freshmen through seniors.

The unified team has at least three tournaments guaranteed, and Hodges is hoping for two more. That does not count the roll-off or post-season.

Bowling is the only sport at HHS in which students with intellectual disabilities compete along side their peers in this way, Hodges said.

"It is showing the importance of getting everybody together on the same level at the same time," he said. "We are showing the importance of truly making everybody equal."

Bowling is more of a mental sport than a physical game, Hodges said. It can accommodate students who may not be able to throw a ball or run fast. It also can be a lifetime activity.

Teams of four are being formed for the roll-off fundraiser. The teams will consist of a sponsor member, member of a local bowling league, a general education student and an intellectually disabled student. 

Since the bowling team tryouts won't be until after the roll-off, any students can participate in the fundraiser.

The interest in the new sport at HHS has been huge, Hodges said. Sixty-four students signed up to participate on the team during a recent informational meeting. Tryouts for the unified team will be Sept. 26.

However, the team is starting from scratch in terms of equipment. The team needs balls, shoes, bags and uniforms. 

Hodges said using house equipment is comparable to PGA golfers using putt-putt golf clubs. Using plastic balls and rented shoes would put all the team's bowlers at a great disadvantage, he said.

Hodges said he hopes to accommodate as many students as possible, especially during the unified season. He would like to be able to have at least 30 students outfitted for the unified season with the ability to take 24 students plus alternates to each tournament.

School district funds to outfit the team are limited, so Hodges said he is hoping for 25 to 30 teams and to raise at least $5,000 through the upcoming roll off.

You can sponsor the team for $125. That includes T-shirts and your business's logo on a banner and/or participation in the roll-off scrimmage.

Local league bowlers can participate in the roll-off for $25.

Hodges said using house equipment is comparable to PGA golfers using putt-putt golf clubs. Using plastic balls and rented shoes would put all the team's bowlers at a great disadvantage, he said. Hodges said he hopes to accommodate as many students as possible, especially during the unified season. He would like to be able to have at least 30 students outfitted for the unified season with the ability to take 24 students plus alternates to each tournament.School district funds to outfit the team are limited, so Hodges said he is hoping for 25 to 30 teams and to raise at least $5,000 through the upcoming roll off. The Bennington State Bank has hired Chris Yohe as Salina market president. 

Yohe

Fort Hays State alum takes reins of Salina bank

Thomas More Prep-Marian High School is going back to the
 future with the piloting of a new boarding program for its students on 
the campus of Fort Hays State University. TMP-Marian previously 
housed boarding students for over 80 years until 2014 when the decision 
was made to close the Catholic secondary school's dormitories.

The pilot program is starting small with just three students. While 
these three students live off campus, they attend&nbsp;classes at TMP-Marian 
during the school day.

"Our students and families are always excited to welcome students 
from out of the area, out of the state, and even out of the country," Principal Chad Meitner said. "The school's long tradition of 
welcoming&nbsp;students from all cultures and faiths is part of our mission 
to extend God's love to the world."

The program was formed to create additional&nbsp;opportunities to bring 
more secondary students to the Hays area.&nbsp;

"This program expands access 
for out-of-town students," Meitner said.

As the pilot year progresses, the program will be evaluated by both 
FHSU and TMP-Marian to determine whether it is in the best 
interest of both institutions to continue.

"Currently, TMP-Marian houses students with local host families, and 
this has been very successful," Meitner said. "The host family model will continue, and 
we hope to supplement it with a small boarding program as well, meeting 
the needs of a larger number of applicants."

Off-campus housing: TMP-Marian pilots boarding program

In an effort to promote shopping local this holiday season, the Hays Chamber is preparing a 2022 Holiday Coupon book featuring area businesses and specials.

“It’s just a fun way to remind our local population to shop and dine local for the holidays,” said Rhonda Meyerhoff, vice president of membership.

The book will be 6-by4 inches and sell for $10 each. They are expected to be available for purchase in late October.

But now is the time for businesses to purchase space in the book. Spaces run from interior spots for $40 to the back cover for $250, according to&nbsp;Mariah Legleiter, vice president of marketing and communications.&nbsp;

While the effort has just begun to create the book, she said spots have already been sold.

“You need to let us know as soon as possible if you would like to have a space in the book,” Legleiter said. “And we ask that your artwork and payment be delivered to the chamber no later than Sept. 30 by the end of the day ... because we're going to really have to hit the ground running and work with our other business partners to kind of get those printed and distributed.”

Following the deadline, Meyerhoff said they should be able to let people know the value of the savings in the listings.

While those details are yet to be determined, she said using the book helps those local businesses that support the community.

“Something that we really just hope, again, to remind people is to keep money in the community,” Meyerhoff said. “Who pays for your kids' sporting shirts, or who helps to sponsor the yearbook or all those different things that we ask our locals to sponsor? It's really important for us to remember to buy from them locally so they can do those things. They like to do those things, but they can only do what they can do. So that'll help keep some money in the community.”

“And oftentimes, you can find stuff that's unique to our community,” Legleiter said. “You find really community-specific items, and I think that is something super cool that we sometimes forget about is that going into that store, they're going to have all kinds of stuff that you can find that you might not be able to find somewhere else.”

GREAT BEND — The outside-the-box approach to bring workforce back to Great Bend
starts next week in … New Mexico. 
In June, Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Hayden announced her
staff would head to the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque to advertise
workforce opportunities in Great Bend. "If there are employers 
that still wish to give us information to advertise their company, 
please feel free to give that information to me," said Hayden. "That 
might be a one-page flyer about what's special about your company and 
why someone would want to come work for you." 
The New Mexico State Fair is Sept. 8-18.
Great Bend is teaming up with Liberal and Dodge City to split up the days to
recruit fairgoers to Kansas. The Great Bend Eco Devo staff will be down there

Three-day weather outlook

Acclaimed composer, virtuoso pianist and inspirational speaker Eric Genuis will be performing a sweep of concerts through central and western Kansas from Sept. 20 to 22.

Genuis will be performing Concerts of Hope for prisoners at Ellsworth and Norton Correctional Facilities. He will be performing for students at Sacred Heart Junior and Senior High School in Salina as well as at Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior and Senior High Schools and Holy Family Elementary School in Hays. Parents are encouraged to attend the school concerts as Genuis talks to the students in a humorous manner about the music they listen to and how to enjoy the classical genre.

Two public concerts will be performed. The first will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Marymount Properties, 2030 E. Iron, Salina. The second will be held at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine, Hays.

Genuis, along with world-class violinist, a cello player and vocalist, perform all original music that gives rise to a unique musical experience with universal appeal. Genuis shares his gift of music with what he calls, “the forgotten,” prisoners, memory care facilities and PTSD veterans.

“What a pleasure to listen to not only a world class pianist and composer, but an artist whose music translates beyond its genre to lift the audience to belief and hope in the power of the human spirit, said actor Jim Caviezel. “I have been honored to be present at several of Eric’s concerts, every time with a unique audience nuance. Those present felt the power of Eric’s music, and his words clearly elevated people.

Composer, pianist, inspirational speaker to perform western Kan. concerts

TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Wednesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Mack semi driven by John William Yocum, 72, Amarillo, Texas, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of WaKeeney.

The vehicle lost a set of rear wheels from its trailer. The wheels traveled across the median and struck the driver's door of a westbound 2000 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp;Marquardt, Mark John Marquardt, 66, Madison, South Dakota. The impact caused the Freightliner to crash into the north ditch.

EMS transported&nbsp;Marquardt to the Trego County Hospital. Yocum was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

(JAG-K) has added 23 new programs for the 2022-2023 school year, 
bringing its number to 104 programs in 48 school districts across the 
state.

JAG-K
 is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades 6-12 that 
offers tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary 
school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable 
skills. Participants in the program face multiple barriers to success 
that their JAG-K Career Specialist helps them overcome through a 
nationally-accredited, evidence-based model.

JAG-K helps students prepare for post-secondary education and 
employment opportunities. JAG-K programs across the state reported a 
graduation rate of 95 percent for the Class of 2021. That total exceeded
 the state of Kansas’ total graduation rate of 88 percent.

JAG-K 
recorded a full-time positive outcomes rate of 86 percent, which means 
that a number of 2021 graduates are either in post-secondary education, 
military service or in the workforce full-time one year after 
graduation. Seventy-two percent of graduates of 2021 are employed, with 
84 percent of those reporting they are working full time.

This 
fall, JAG-K opened programs in five communities in which it previously 
had no presence, while it also increased its number of programs in urban
 areas like Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka and Junction City. The program 
anticipates serving approximately 5,500 students in the 2022-2023 school
 year, an increase of about 1,200 students.

“We are excited to add

achieve successful futures,” said JAG-K President and CEO Chuck Knapp. 
“JAG-K career specialists have been helping students prepare for 
post-secondary success for more than nine years, and that record of

 the 40 states that have offered Jobs for America’s Graduates Programs 
over the past 40 years, the Kansas affiliate is the fastest to establish
 100 programs. JAG-K is celebrating its tenth year this school year.

JAG-K
 programs are now in 86 multi-year high schools and 13 middle schools. 
JAG-K also has five alternate education programs and five "transition" 
programs dedicated to serving students in foster care.

The 501(c)3
 not-for-profit organization is a state affiliate of the national JAG 
program network which operates in 40 different states and territories. 
It is primarily funded through the Temporary Assistance for Needy 
Families block grant to the State of Kansas administered by the Kansas 
Department for Children and Families (DCF). In addition to school 
districts and DCF, JAG-K partners with the Kansas Department of 
Education. Other JAG-K funding sources include ADM, AT&amp;T, Evergy,

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Tuesday I was hauling hay; it was my fifth or sixth load of the day, and I had been hauling hay for the better part of a week. It was probably all too routine. I was making the left-hand turn off of the highway onto the county road. I looked back in my rearview mirror and did not see anyone before I started to turn. That was when I saw the Subaru had decided to pass me at that very point. Thankfully, nothing more happened than the driver squealing their brakes and shaking their fist at me, but it could have been much worse. Over the past couple of months, I have had a couple of friends who have had worse experiences sharing the highways with other motorists. Thankfully, none of them were seriously hurt, but the damage to farm equipment was not something they had planned to deal with, I am sure. Let me be the first to say I was not without fault. Upon inspection, I learned my left-turn signal was not working. However, if I remember my driver’s ed classes right, it is not permissible to pass on a double yellow line or at an intersection. Along with that, following so close to a trailer that the driver in front of you cannot see you is not good either. My point is all drivers need to share the road, and those roads are starting to get even more crowded with slow moving ag equipment as harvest starts. As ag producers we need to make sure our equipment has working lights and turn signals. We need to be aware of who is around us on the roads and have a plan of action that assumes other drivers will not do the right thing. If at all possible, move equipment at times when the road is less crowded. If you are driving during harvest, please, give the equipment plenty of room. Stay far enough back to see the rearview mirrors of the vehicle ahead of you because that will mean they can also see you. Farm equipment moves slowly so take that into account as you approach. You will close the gap much faster than you may realize. Please, never pass near an intersection, many times our turn signals don’t work. Yes, farm equipment will slow your drive down, again, please take a deep breath. Don’t be in such a rush that you pass in a bad place or at the wrong time. That farmer is growing the food you are rushing home to put on your table. I got lucky, and I am using that fortunate moment as a reminder to be more vigilant when I am on the road. It only takes a second, a blink for things to go bad. Take the time to slow down, make the right decisions and be courteous. We are all in this together, we have to share the same road, let’s all be safe and make sure we make it home.

Ellis County fire crews responded to a pair of grass fires
this week.

The first fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Tuesday near Saline
River Road and Cathedral Avenue.

According to Ellis County Assistant Fire Chief Lyle Pantle, when crews arrived on scene they found approximately 500-yard-long fire line
and burnt pasture. Crews were able to get the fire under control just before 8
p.m. and stayed on scene mopping up and returned to the station at
approximately 8:40 p.m.

Pantle said approximately 50 acres of pasture and open land
were burned in the fire. 

At approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, Company 5 was called to
the 2400 block of East Seventh Street for a grass fire.

Pantle said the grass fire spread to a tree row and wood
pile. Crews put out the fire and returned to the station at approximately 4:10
p.m. 

A cause of the fire could not be determined.

The Hays area is more than 7 inches inches behind average precipitation year to date, according to the K-State Research Center in Hays.

Fire crews respond to two Ellis County grass fires

You may remember hearing about 
the Four County Fire back on Dec. 15, 2021. The fire devastated many
 acres in the counties of Ellis, Russell, Osborne and Rooks.

I remember the day vividly, despite being almost 200 
miles from those four counties. It was the strangest day I can recall in
 my entire life living in Kansas. In Manhattan, the tornado 
sirens blew in the middle of the afternoon as high winds tore roofs off 
buildings. The power went off and I could smell something burning. I 
thought at first it could be the beginning of an electrical fire. 
However, as I stepped outside, ashes were falling from the sky, and the 
air smelled of smoke.

Unfortunately, these powerful winds were occurring across the 
entirety of Kansas that day. Some wind gusts were measured at speeds of 
107 mph! This was even more frightening for western Kansas, especially 
around the Hays area, because the Kansas State Research Extension Center
 had not recorded any rainfall since Nov. 3. The area was vulnerable
 to anything that might spark a fire. Many locals concluded that the 
fire started from a spark of a broken power line in Ellis County. As it 
spread, the blaze left many people in the area wetting down their yards 
hoping to slow the fire before it took everything they had. The fire 
devastated the landscape, leaving many farmers, ranchers and other 
people fighting to save not only their lives but their livelihoods. The 
people in this area will never fully recover, but many believe it will 
take two to three years for the area to return to some sense of normal. 
It is important to remember that the Four County area still needs help! 
We must not forget how devastating this day was and that the recovery 
efforts have not ended.

Stephanie Dickerson, a multi-generational ranch owner in Paradise commented that, "Right now, the area is still in need of new 
fencing supplies and labor to recover the old fences and the debris from
 the fire."

The Four County Fire showed the Kansas Legislature a change was
 necessary for the future. In preparation for future wildfires, a bill 
passed allowing individuals to purchase fencing supplies without any 
sales tax at all. Another crucial thing to remember is that wildfires 
are hard to predict and can happen in any rural community. Insurance 
Commissioner Vicki Schmidt would like to remind people it is important 
to check your insurance plans to ensure you are covered for disasters 
like this wildfire.

On Dec. 15, rancher Chris Pelton had gotten a call that the fire 
was 7 miles southwest of Paradise and headed toward his land very 
quickly. He attempted to hold off the fires until his shop was engulfed 
in flames. Luckily, he made a quick escape but lost nearly all his 
buildings and many of his family possessions. He managed to save his 
dog, Archie, from his burning shed before he left for his own safety. 
Pelton remarked, "It was amazing to watch how people came to help with 
the recovery."

The fire did far more damage to soil than an average wildfire because
 it burned off the crop residue from many fields. This allowed powerful 
winds to blow the extremely dry topsoil away. Additionally, it took away
 people's lifelong family homes, fences, livestock and businesses. Many 
families had started these businesses from the ground up or maintained 
them for many generations.

This tragedy is significant to many people in these communities. It 
is evident they needed help and assistance in some way after this 
unpredictable and catastrophic event. An amazing saving grace effort 
came from people in the surrounding communities donating resources and 
traveling to the four counties to help with the wildfire recovery 
effort. The Kansas Livestock Foundation even managed to distribute two 
million dollars of funds to 91 Kansas applicants that were affected by 
the wildfire. The funds were donated by 2,100 generous contributors from
 41 states. Applicants lost more than 2,100 head of livestock and about 
750 miles of fencing.

Let us not forget the wildfires on Dec. 15, 2021, which show us 
that no matter how much certainty we have in our future, it can all be 
taken away by events outside of our control. However, what took place 
after the storms and wildfires are what gives me hope for our future as a
 country. There are still so many caring people who will be kind and 
helpful to people who are fighting off the worst moments of their lives.
 Please, be thankful for everything you have. If this story affects you 
in any way, please never be afraid to give to somebody who truly needs 
help in the future. It could make all the difference in the world.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 47 new COVID-19 cases had been identified in Ellis County from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2. KDHE reports updated case numbers weekly on Wednesdays.

Ellis County is along several northwest Kansas counties in the high- or substantial-incidence classification (see map below).&nbsp;
