This year, 34 new members will be inducted into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame, the largest group ever in a single year.

An explanation of the process that led to this year’s decisions can be found below. Mostly, it’s catching up on a number of people who were overlooked in the past because of rather tight restrictions in the guidelines previously used for consideration that favored newspaper executives.

Among this year's honorees are two notable journalists who worked in northwest Kansas — Julie Doll and Steve Haynes.

Reporting and leadership roles dotted the career of 1979 Kansas State University graduate Julie Doll.

She worked as a reporter at the Lawrence Journal-World and the Hays Daily News and then moved to the Hutchinson News in 1981, but a year later she joined the Harris Enterprises management intern program.

She was named editor and publisher of the Hays Daily News in 1984, leading a talented staff covering tough issues like the farm crisis and the city’s water shortage.

In 1990, she took over as publisher of the Camarillo Daily News, a Harris property in California.

After those properties were sold in 1994, she went to work in newsroom management at the Poughkeepsie Journal in New York and guided the newspaper’s coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

From 2002 to 2010, she worked at the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal and Courier. In 2012, she was named business editor of the Wichita Eagle before leaving the business in 2015.

The newspaper career of Steve Haynes spans more than five decades, the majority of it in Kansas.

A graduate of the University of Kansas, he began his professional newspaper career at the Kansas City Star and Times.

He moved to Colorado, where he led the Mineral County Miner and the South Ford Times in Creede, Colo. from 1980 to 1986.

He was co-owner and co-publisher of SLV Publishing in Monte Vista, Colo. from 1986 to 1993.

He and Cynthia moved to northwest Kansas and he was the co-owner, publisher and editor of Haynes Publishing Co. and Nor’West Newspapers for nearly 30 years until his retirement. Those newspapers included the Colby Free Press, Goodland Star-News, St. Francis Herald and Bird City Times, and later the Rawlins County Square Deal and a shopper, the Country Advocate.

While Steve Haynes has been in the newspaper business for more than five decades, the majority of it in Kansas, his accomplishments in the industry are outstanding as well.

He was president of the Colorado Press Association in 1988, where he headed a successful campaign for the state Sunshine Law and president of the Kansas Press Association in 1998-99.

In 2008, he was elected president of the National Newspaper Association after serving in a number of capacities on the board. He still serves on the NNA Foundation board.

More detailed biographies will be published this fall on the Kansas Press Association website and then available through the digital Kansas Media Hall of Fame newly opened at Stauffer/Flint Hall at the University of Kansas.

The Buchanans worked side-by-side after buying the Bucklin Banner in 1956. In 1959, they bought the Washington County News and operated it until 1981.

Tom, who was known as “Buckshot,” was a prolific editorial and column writer and in 1966 won first place in editorial writing from the National Newspaper Association for an editorial titled “The American Dream.”

Christine reported news and wrote a popular weekly column for the News.

In 1974, they won the Victor Murdock Award for their coverage of the town of Greenleaf following a devastating tornado the previous year.

He served as president of the Kansas Press Association in 1981-82.

Tom earned his bachelor’s degree from Sterling College in 1950 and worked at the Sterling Bulletin.

After marrying Christine, he went to work for the Phillips County Review.

Two of their five children, Bruce and Jean, followed them in the newspaper business.

3 northwest Kansas journalists will be inducted into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame

The Kansas Small Business Development Center is hosting workshops for women-owned small businesses on Aug. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sternberg Museum, 3000 Sternberg Drive, Hays.

The workshops are geared toward women and their partners who own or are interested in starting businesses, and for resource providers. Businesses are also welcome to bring their employees or encourage them to attend to gain valuable information.

Workshop topics include access to capital; certifications for Women-Owned Business Enterprise/Women-Owned Small Business (WBE/WOSB); branding for women-owned businesses; regional food businesses; high growth opportunities; and networking opportunities.

“We are excited about offering this opportunity in Hays,” said Laurie Pieper, assistant state director of Kansas SBDC. “This is a chance for participants to learn about issues, needs, and opportunities specifically for women-owned businesses and to share information, connections, and enthusiasm for supporting women-owned small businesses to create strong pathways for success.”

The registration fee to attend any or all the day’s workshops is $10.

Workshops for women-owned businesses planned in Hays through Small Business Development Center

WAKEENEY - Jeremy Rabe, a native of western Kansas, has joined Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney as its new chief executive officer as of July 31.

Rabe attended Fort Hays State University where he obtained his bachelor of science in medical diagnostic imaging with a minor in business administration. He received his master of business administration in healthcare management at Western Governors University.

Rabe previously served as the regional director of imaging services for Centura Hospitals of Kansas. Before transitioning to Centura, Rabe served as the director of radiology and assistant administrator for Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

"I look forward to working with and leading the dedicated staff at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital," Rabe said. "As a lifetime resident of western Kansas, I understand the healthcare challenges we face."

In his free time, Rabe enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports, bowling and helping on the farm.&nbsp;

Three-day weather outlook

On August 10, First Care Clinic and Heartland Dermatology Center will again team up to offer a free health screening and education event.

This event will take place from 4-7 p.m. at First Care Clinic located at 105 W. 13th.

 The screenings are open to the public, are free of charge, and do not require an appointment. 

Opportunities include skin cancer screenings, vision screenings, blood pressure checks, and blood glucose testing. Assistance with meal planning will also be available.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with First Care Clinic again for the upcoming health screening event, offering free skin cancer screening to raise awareness and promote early detection," said&nbsp;Tara Gillespie, APRN-C and CEO of Heartland Dermatology. "Join us in prioritizing health and empowering our community to take proactive steps towards a healthier future.”

"The purpose of a health screening event is to empower attendees with knowledge and practical strategies to lead healthier lives and take proactive steps towards preventative care," said Stephanie Burkholder, Regional Director for Heartland Dermatology.

The event is completely free of charge and the community is invited to bring their friends and family to come partake in these screenings.

MeadowLARK grant program expands apprenticeship opportunities in Kansas

The Hays
Chamber’s Education Appreciation Dinner is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 this year,
giving area teachers and administrators a night to sit back, relax and mingle
with their peers from across Ellis County at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth St. Hays.

This year’s
event marks its 35th anniversary.

“We're
excited to do it every year because of the fantastic educators that we have
right here in Ellis County,” said Hays Chamber president and CEO Sarah
Wasinger. “The point of this event is always to, of course, show our gratitude
to all of the men and women who roll up their sleeves on a daily basis to
educate our county's youth and also to welcome those who are new to the
profession, perhaps, or those who are relocating to Ellis County to be
educators.”

She said about 200 people attend the free event each year.

Along
with the dinner, prizes will be awarded at the event, and the first 200 guests will
receive a swag bag featuring branded items from dinner sponsors.

“If
you're a business out there and you want to get involved or be a part of
it, there's a whole bunch of different ways to do that,” Wasinger said.

TREGO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3:30a.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Dodge Ram driven by Richard E. Hubbard, 72, Hill City, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Ogallah exit.

The driver lost control in the rain. The pickup struck the guard rail, traveled up and over the guard rail, rotated towards the west and rolled.

EMS transported Hubbard to Hays Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

LAWRENCE — As a new space race heats up, two researchers from Kansas Geological Survey and their colleagues have proposed a new scientific subfield: planetary geoarchaeology, the study of how cultural and natural processes on Earth’s moon, on Mars, and across the solar system may be altering, preserving or destroying the material record of space exploration.

“Until recently, we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th&nbsp;century as relatively safe,” said Justin Holcomb, postdoctoral researcher at Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas, and lead author on a&nbsp;<a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/gea.21966">new paper</a>&nbsp;introducing the concept of planetary geoarchaeology in the journal Geoarchaeology. “However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.”

Since the advent of space exploration, humans have launched more than 6,700 satellites and spacecraft from countries around the globe, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The United States alone accounts for more than 4,500 civil, commercial, governmental and military satellites.

“We’re trying to draw attention to the preservation, study and documentation of space heritage because I do think there’s a risk to this heritage on the moon,” Holcomb said. 

“The United States is trying to get boots on the moon again, and China is as well. We’ve already had at least four countries accidentally crash into the moon recently. There are a lot of accidental crashes and not a lot of protections right now.”

Holcomb began considering the idea of planetary geoarchaeology during the COVID-19 lockdown. Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of the ODYSSEY Archaeological Research Program housed at the KGS and directed by Holcomb’s co-author, Rolfe Mandel, KGS senior scientist and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Anthropology.

“Human migration out of Africa may have occurred as early as 150,000 years ago, and space travel represents the latest stage of that journey,” Mandel said. “Although the ODYSSEY program is focused on documenting the earliest evidence of people in the Americas, the next frontier for similar research will be in space.”

How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an open question.

“We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection,” Holcomb said. “However, some sites, such as the very first footprints on the moon at Tranquility Base or the first lander on Mars, Viking 1, represent the material footprint of a long history of migration.”

Beyond those “firsts,” sifting through the hundreds of thousands of bits of material currently in orbit or strewn across the surfaces of the moon and Mars — what many call “trash” but Holcomb and his colleagues regard as heritage — will require case-by-case decision making.

“We have to make those decisions all the time with archaeological sites today,” Holcomb said. “The moon has such a limited record now that it’s totally possible to protect all of it. Certainly, we need to protect space heritage related to the Apollo missions, but other countries, too, deserve to have their records protected.”

With resources for protecting space heritage limited, Holcomb and his colleagues advocate for developing systems to track materials left in space.

“We should begin tracking our material record as it continues to expand, both to preserve the earliest record but also to keep a check on our impact on extraterrestrial environments,” he said. “It’s our job as anthropologists and archaeologists to bring issues of heritage to the forefront.”

Beyond the moon, Holcomb wants to see planetary geoarchaeology extend to issues related to exploration and migration to Mars. He points to NASA’s Spirit Rover as an example. The rover became stuck in Martian sand in 2008 and now risks being completely covered by encroaching sand dunes.

“As planetary geoarchaeologists, we can predict when the rover will be buried, talk about what will happen when it’s buried and make sure it’s well documented before it’s lost,” he said. “Planetary scientists are rightfully interested in successful missions, but they seldom think about the material left behind. That’s the way we can work with them.”

Holcomb believes geoarchaeologists should be included in future NASA missions to ensure the protection and safety of space heritage. Meanwhile, geoarchaeologists on Earth can lay the foundation for that work, including advocating for laws to protect and preserve space heritage, studying the effects extraterrestrial ecosystems have on items space missions leave behind and conducting international discussions regarding space heritage preservation and protection issues.

As for being part of a space mission himself?

“I’ll leave that to other geoarchaeologists,” Holcomb said. “There’s plenty to do down here, but I do hope to see an archaeologist in space before it’s all over.”

In space race, Kansas researchers propose new scientific subfield of planetary geoarchaeology

As Ellis County officials continue to work to transform the
county’s dispatch center into one of the most state-of-the-art in the region, they hope that one
of the next proposed changes goes unnoticed by the public.

The Ellis County Dispatch Center is a joint effort
by the city of Hays and Ellis County. The county owns the equipment, and the
city employs the 14 staff members who work at the emergency
dispatch center.

Ellis County Commissioner Michael Berges said through the
budgeting process Ellis County is preparing to take on those 14 employees during the next three years. 

“That'll be over a million dollars worth of employee benefits
and salaries,” Berges said. “So, we’re working with the city commissioners
(and) the dispatch employees to get that moved forward for January.”

The county has used federal COVID relief funds, both American
Rescue Plan Act and Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funds to help pay for the significant improvements to the dispatch
center over the last two years.

County Administrator and Fire Chief Darin Myers has helped
to lead the implantation of the new system.

“We've made some pretty significant investments into the
dispatch center to include a new computer-aided dispatch system and records
management system that houses all that data,” Myers said.

Emergency vehicles now have mobile data terminals that allow dispatch to send information directly to those vehicles through the
new interface. They are working to implement all of the new technologies
available through the new system.

Myers said the possibility of a change has been discussed
for several years.

“This has actually been talked about for 10-20 years since
I've been in service,” Myers said. “I started with Hays Fire in 2001, and it was
talked about clear back then what this might look like in the future.”

Myers added with the possible relocation of the Hays
Police Department from 105 W. 12th St. to Main Street, there
will be a lot more room to accommodate the changes.

Berges said it will create a new communications department
with the county.

“It's communications departments. We're adding essentially a
new department. It's not under the sheriff and in the police (or) the sheriff's
department in the jail. It'll be its own department,” Berges said.

As part of the improvements, the county approved the installation
of a new communications tower north of Hays in an area where communication was spotty.

“That was one of the big deficiencies that we saw on that
for county fire was lack of radio communications,” Myers said. 

County officials are also working on a backup dispatch center
that will be used in the event of a disruption in services. Currently, emergency calls are covered by another
county when dispatch is experiencing issues. 

“That way if something ever does happen at one facility, we
have a facility here we don't have to transfer 911 calls or put that burden on
a different county dispatch system,” Myers said.

Myers said they plan to use federal&nbsp;American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase that
equipment. They plan to have a proposal put together later this year. 

Dispatch and the future of the law enforcement are
expected to be topics of discussion at a joint Ellis County and Hays City
Commission meeting later this year.

County preparing to take over dispatch communications center

BELOIT - Students from NCK Tech Beloit’s Welding program took home the silver medal at the National Skills USA welding fabrication competition held in Atlanta, GA, on June 19-23, 2023. 

To qualify for the national contest, students must take first place at their respective state competition held in the spring.

The welding fabrication team consisted of three students that worked cooperatively to complete a project from blueprints using SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW / OFC and PAC welding and cutting processes. 

The team members were Brayden Doughman, Canton, Hunter Teasley, Pratt, and Josh Uhland, Logan.

Skills utilized included oxy-fuel cutting, welding in all positions, mathematics, layout, drilling, finishing, and the ability to adapt to alterations and stresses in the production environment.

In addition to the team events, Evan Claassen, Whitewater, represented Kansas and NCK Tech in the individual welding competition. 

During the competition, participants receive drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications that conform to the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards. At a series of stations, competitors are tested on various aspects of welding, including: measuring weld replicas, using weld measuring gauges, and using oxy-acetylene equipment to cut several holes. Welding processes used include, gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) on an aluminum project. 

Special thanks to our supporters and business and industry partners that make it possible for our students to compete at the state and national competitions. Technical education is the backbone of the American economy, it provides students with limitless opportunities to put their skills to work. 

All four students were hired immediately upon graduating.

HaysMed reaccredited in magnetic resonance imaging from the American College of Radiology 

WAKEENEY - Trego Hospital Endowment Foundation, Inc.&nbsp;is pleased to announce they have received a $115,000 tax credit allocation&nbsp;in Community Service Program (CSP) Tax Credits through the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Donors giving at least $250 to&nbsp;Trego Hospital Endowment Foundation, Inc. "TCLMH Renovation &amp; Expansion Project"&nbsp;may qualify for a&nbsp;(70%/50%)&nbsp;tax credit. 🎥 Green and Growing: Strawberries

The Graham County Fair continues tonight and Wednesday with more of the Jayhawker Roundup Rodeo.&nbsp;

Muttin' bustin' starts at 6 p.m. The rodeo will start at 8 p.m. followed by D Bar's Wittle Buckers and Bull Fighting. Jimmy Dee will provide live music at 10 p.m.

Kids' games and a mechanical bull will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

A free barbecue will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with more rodeo to follow.

Music will be 3 X 7 at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
