The Ellis County Environmental Services Department opens a new construction and demolition pit on Wednesday

The opening of the new pit marks the completion of an over two-year long project. 

Land for the Ellis County Landfill expansion was purchased back in 2020. Time from the land acquisition to today was spent obtaining permitting and completing construction. 

Construction of the expansion was entirely completed by Ellis County employees, equating in more than $100,000 of savings in the Solid Waste budget.&nbsp;

The new construction and demolition cell is split into a southern and northern half. Presently, dumping is only permitted in the southern portion. The dumping area will progress south, until its full. At that time, dumping will begin filling in the north. 

This new cell is projected to last approximately eight years, and future expansion cells are already planned for the property.&nbsp;

The new cell is located at the Ellis County Landfill, 1515 W. 55th St., Hays.

 Customers will follow normal check-in procedures at the scale house, then continue west past the former construction and demolition pit. From the former pit, follow the curve to the north.

“Go slow and keep right as you enter the new landing area,” says Solid Waste Director Justin Craig. "Be mindful of other drivers, as this is a new practice for everyone.” 

All dumping will be at the south face of the landing area. 

Drivers are directed to pull into the area to the north, and back vehicles south. When exiting, keep right, take your time, and watch for traffic while exiting the area back to the scale house. Solid waste staff are available at the scale house to answer questions or provide guidance if needed.&nbsp;

Accepted material at the construction and demolition pit includes, but is not limited to concrete, wood, drywall, roofing materials, bricks, fiberglass, and additional construction and demolition debris. 

The current tipping fee is $45 per ton, with a $10 minimum (440 pounds or less). 

Ellis County Solid Waste operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday. No dumping is allowed 15 minutes prior to close.&nbsp;

Both the city of Hays and Ellis County have included funds in their draft 2024 budgets for the state's Rural Opportunity Zone program.

They have additionally committed to funding the program for an additional four years.

A change in the population size for eligible counties in 2021 from 20,000 to 40,000 residents made Ellis County, its communities and employers eligible to offer the incentives.

The Kansas Legislature created the Rural Opportunity Zone program in 2011 as a tool for communities experiencing depopulation to encourage new residents to move to the region.&nbsp;

Benefits of the program include a 100 percent state income tax credit and/or student loan repayment assistance for up to five years.

Michael Berges, county commissioner, told Hays city commissioners at their July 20 work session Ellis County would be participating and allocating $15,000 dollars for the program, to recruit up to 10 new residents. Ellis County signed a resolution of participation in 2021 but did not budget any money for the program at that time.

Sandy Jacobs, Hays vice-mayor, said she likes the program but believes it hasn't been very successful for the state because it isn't well-promoted.

"Fifteen-thousand dollars is a small investment to get 10 new people in our community. ... I know the county is real interested in new employees even for themselves. This would be an opportunity to partner with the county," she said.

"I think it could be worth it," said Shaun Musil, mayor. "Some other towns haven't been successful but I think we can be."

Collin Bielser, deputy city manager, told the commission Rooks County reported in 2021 families had taken advantage of the program in that county.

"They don't know for certain whether it was the program that drew them there. The comment was at the time that a lot of people happened to be moving back and were able to take advantage of it," Bielser said.

Bielser said many of the counties that used the program still saw decreases in population, which was contrary to the state's goal.

A sponsor's maximum annual financial contribution per participant in the student loan repayment program is $1,500. Funding is equally shared between the state and the local sponsor.

City commissioners agreed to earmark $15,000 a year for the next five years, for a total of $75,000 from the general fund.

During further discussion at the Aug. 3 work session, Bielser told the commission that Grow Hays will oversee the program's promotion.&nbsp;

"I think that's the key," Jacobs said. "Give it a couple of years, give it the marketing it deserves and see what happens.

"We're a different community from all those others that were decreasing in population."

"One person may take advantage and bring along a family of four or five," Musil said.&nbsp; "Then we will grow just not by one person, but several."

Commissioner Mason Ruder looked even further into the future.

"Yeah, the family moves here. Five or six years from that, are the parents also going to come to Hays to retire?" he said.&nbsp;

"I think it's more a long game than it is something in the short term," Ruder said.

 Reese Barrick, commissioner, said a lot depends on how this is marketed.

"If it goes to people who were already planning on moving here, it's just a way for them to get some help paying back their student loan," he said. "It's not doing what our purpose is.

"If we're marketing the community to places and people, they'll be like 'That's a cool place to be and there's a job there.' They move here. That's exactly what we want," Barrick said.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY — The University of Kansas School of Nursing has announced the launch of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center to address multiple crises in the field of nursing. This new center will be housed at KU School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas, but its purpose will be statewide — to foster collaboration among nursing stakeholders to address shortages of nurses and of nursing faculty.&nbsp;

“The nursing profession is in crisis — both nationally and in Kansas,” said Sally L. Maliski, dean of KU School of Nursing. Maliski said the problem is on track to get worse as the pandemic’s negative effect on nurses, combined with the number of baby boomers retiring, means that the entire profession is facing challenges at all levels like never before.&nbsp;

“As we saw the growing crisis of nurse and nurse educator shortages, we knew something had to be done to address this in a unified and collaborative manner,” Maliski said. “Also, Kansas was one of only 10 states that did not have a nursing workforce center to help address this critical issue for Kansans.” &nbsp;

KU School of Nursing hosted multiple conversations throughout the state with a wide variety of stakeholders before launching the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center. Amy Garcia associate clinical professor at KU School of Nursing, will be the center’s director.&nbsp;

“The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center will do things that matter,” Garcia said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We will help people find their pathway to becoming a nurse. We will develop programs to help nurses find joy in their work.&nbsp;&nbsp;We will study the supply of, and demand for, nurses and provide reports to help communities find and keep the nurses they need.&nbsp;&nbsp;And we will convene schools, employers, associations and government to find better ideas to strengthen nursing and resolve the ongoing shortage of nurses.”&nbsp;

KU School of Nursing has provided initial budgetary and operational support, and it is anticipated that the center will pursue additional funding, including research and program grants, to support the efforts. &nbsp;

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center will work collaboratively with employers, schools, professional associations and government and other agencies to strengthen the nursing workforce in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;The center will study the supply, demand and educational pathways of nurses, while also exploring ways to develop, sustain and retain the existing nursing workforce. The center also will educate organizations and policymakers about issues and policies affecting nurses.&nbsp;

This fall, the center will form an advisory board, with plans for additional expansion of the board in subsequent years. Garcia said that to make lasting change, collaboration is essential. “These are systemic problems, and they are going to require systemic solutions.”&nbsp;

“Nurses matter,” Garcia said. “People trust nurses to be there when they are sick, injured or simply trying to be healthy. Nurses care for us at the beginning and the end of life. Every Kansan should have access to high-quality nursing care. And nurses should have access to the education and support they need to excel in their jobs.” &nbsp;

Public Library’s Community Threads program is set to return in 2023, giving
area residents an opportunity to receive gently used clothing and accessories
free of charge.

During
regular library hours Saturday and Sunday, anyone interested in taking advantage of
the program can view items available at the library at 1205 Main.

Donations
will be accepted through today. Donations will be accepted at the library’s
front desk.

The last
Community Threads program was offered in 2021, said Hays Public Library communications
coordinator Callie Kolacny.

“It can
be shoes, clothes, coats, hats, gloves, accessories, some jewelry, things like
that, that you want to donate, we'll take all of that kind of stuff,” she said.


The
program, however, is not for household items.

“We
especially want people to donate children's items, children's clothes, because
those seem to be the things that the people that come in want the most,”
Kolacny said.

Following
the completion of donations, she said library staff would sort the items to be
made available to the public.

“Our
staff will do a great job of getting everything organized,” Kolacny said. “It's really easy to find what you might be looking for, and we're excited to do
this again this year.”

There
are no requirements to participate.

“Just
come fill bags, get whatever you need,” she said. “This is an opportunity to
come and get whatever you want for free. ... We will not be asking about financial
ability, nothing like that. Just come in and get what you want, take it and
enjoy it.”

🎙 Hays Public Library's Community Threads program offers free clothes this weekend

Crude prices remain at three-month highs. The near-month Nymex contract has lost some ground since settling Wednesday over $84 per barrel for the first time since November. That contract settled Friday at $83.19 per barrel, 37 cents higher on the day and a weekly gain of 37 cents. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $73.50 per barrel after gaining half a dollar on Friday. Kansas prices are a half dollar higher than a week ago, and two dollars higher than at the first of the month. The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes has dropped every week since July 7. The oil count hasn't risen since June 9. Friday's tally shows 654 active drilling rigs in the U.S., which is down five gas rigs from last week. The oil tally was unchanged, the first time it hasn't dropped since July. Texas, Louisiana and Pennsylvania were each down two rigs. Oklahoma was up one. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service (8/10) reported 26 active drilling rigs in western Kansas and 16 east of Wichita. Inventories rose to just over 445 million barrels as of August 4th, up nearly six million barrels in seven days. A week ago the government reported inventories dropping 17 million barrels, an all-time record. The Energy Information Administration reporting shows domestic stockpiles remain at lows not seen since January. U.S. crude production reached 12.5 million barrels of crude per day, up by 384,000 barrels from a week ago, and 340,000 barrels ahead of a year ago. The Energy Information Administration said U.S. output is at its highest level since April of 2020. The all-time high was set in March of 2020 at over 13 million barrels per day. The Energy Information Administration said crude-oil imports averaged 6.7 million barrels per day in the week through August 4, up 14,000 barrels per day from the week before.&nbsp; Four-week average imports are up nearly three percent from the same four weeks a year ago. The Energy Information Administration said regular gasoline inventories dropped by nearly three million barrels last week and are seven percent below the five-year seasonal average.

Diesel stocks are down 1.7 million barrels and are 17% lower than the five year average for this time of year. At the pump we're seeing double-digit spikes. 

Regular gasoline prices in Kansas are rising faster than the national average, and are now more expensive than they were a year ago.&nbsp; 

The statewide average on Thursday was $3.65/gal., up 41 cents from a month ago. The national average is higher, at $3.82/gal., but rising more slowly, nearly thirty cents in the last month. And the national average is still 18 cents lower than a year ago. The Kansas average is four cents higher than a year ago. Filling up your 15-gallon tank in our neighborhood will cost you a little over $54, up from $49 a month ago. Despite an industry decline in overall railroad shipments, oil-by-rail held steady last month, and posted big gains last week. Operators moved 10,211 tanker carloads of petroleum and petroleum products across the country during the week through July 29. That's up more than a thousand carloads from a week earlier, up two percent from the weekly count a year ago and the highest weekly tally since March 30. The Association of American Railroads reported total rail shipments in July were down 3.3% compared to a year ago. Kansas regulators report 99 new intent-to-drill notices across the state last week, 817 so far this year, compared to 925 through July of last year. There are two new intents filed in July in Barton County and two in Stafford County. So far this year, the Kansas Corporation Commission reports 29 new notices in Barton County, compared to 13 by the end of July last year. Ellis County has 24 new intents on file this year, compared to 16 by this time last year. Russell County posts four intents this year, compared to nine last year at this time. Stafford County has 21 new intent-to-drill notices on file this year, compared to 12 a year ago. The annual convention and expo of the Kansas Independent Oil &amp; Gas Association is coming up this weekend, August 20-22 at Wichita's Century II Convention Center. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $73.50 per barrel after gaining half a dollar on Friday. Kansas prices are a half dollar higher than a week ago, and two dollars higher than at the first of the month. The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes has dropped every week since July 7. The oil count hasn't risen since June 9. Friday's tally shows 654 active drilling rigs in the U.S., which is down five gas rigs from last week. The oil tally was unchanged, the first time it hasn't dropped since July. Texas, Louisiana and Pennsylvania were each down two rigs. Oklahoma was up one. News from the Oil Patch: National rig counts continue to drop

Hays received .52 inches of rain at the Eagle Radio student during the weekend.

Hays is above normal for rain having received. 3.53 inches of rain in the month of August compared to an average of 2.97 inches.

Hays is still below its year-to-date precipitation. According to the K-State Ag Research Center, Hays has received 16.51 inches year-to-date compared to an average of 17.57 inches as of the end of August.

The Kansas Drought Monitor will pull data Tuesday and release its latest drought map on Thursday.

As of Aug. 10, portions of Ellis County were still in exceptional drought; however, the area has received rain of varying amounts in Hays and the immediate areas since the last data was reported.

The forecast for today in Hays is for a high of 82, but temperatures are forecast to steadily climb to a high of 101 on Friday. No rain is in the forecast through Friday.

Hays receives more rain during weekend; forecast for hotter temps, clear skies

For the first time in more than nine years, Ellis County will
make sure employees’ compensation is in line with other government agencies.

Last week the Ellis County Commission approved a contract
with The Arnold Group out of Wichita for $23,000 to review the county’s
employee compensation, compare it to other government agencies and establish a
new or updated pay plan.

County Human Resources Coordinator Jennifer Taylor said
Tuesday, The Arnold Group is doing similar work for counties all across the
state.

“They do provide review and recommendations for our pay
grades and our pay scales to make sure we have all of our jobs classified in
the correct pay grade and that our pay scale is kind of where it should be,” Taylor
said.

The company will then also review the county’s current
policies and provide recommendations, Taylor said.

“Then once they're done with that it, they will provide our HR
department with a very solid foundation to build upon that way, in the
future years, we can do that compensation and market review, analysis
in-house,” Taylor said. 

Commissioner Michael Berges said he believes the result
of the study will show the county is lacking but his concern is the
ability to fund the recommendations provided.

“I have a feeling when they come back, they're going say you
should be paying more or giving better benefits,” Berges said.

County Administrator Darin Myers said in the budget
proposal the county has set aside $600,000 for adjustments and he
recommends through the budget discussion to set aside additional funding to
help implement the findings of the study.

“As Commissioner Burgess alluded to, we did do a pay study
back in 2014. It did take us until 2021 to get completed, and probably by the
time it got completed, it was outdated already,” Myers said. 

During the commission’s discussion on the budget later during the
meeting, the commissioners elected to move forward with a final draft budget for 2024 of $31,365,940.
The estimated mill levy would be 37.045, a decrease of .53 mills. That is
subject to change when the final valuations are calculated later this year.

That includes $400,000 for the implementation of the wage
study and a paid time off program with $250,000 for the
study.

Myers said he thinks the results from the study will start
coming in as of November or December. That is the same time that
the county’s wage and benefits group would begin to make its recommendations
for next year.

Also included in the 2024 budget are funding for Public
Works to start an asphalt repair program, funding to increase bridge repairs, funding for the expansion of the Noxious Weed Department, funding to begin acquiring
911 dispatchers from the city, funding for the Rural Opportunity Zone Program and funding for scholarships in an effort to retain students in Ellis County.

The budget also includes a slight increase in funding for
outside agencies.

The commission will consider the 2024 budget for a final
review on Tuesday. Once it is approved, it will be published for the public’s
consumption. The public hearing on the
budget and the revenue-neutral rate hearing will be on Sept. 12.

Ellis County Commission approves wage study in 2024 budget

A Fort Hays State University student is starting her third battle with cancer.

Sophia Linenberger was only 15 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma.

She went through lengthy treatments of radiation and chemotherapy and twice went into remission.

But Sophia, who was about to enter her sophomore year at FHSU after being almost two years in remission, developed a bump on the side of her head.

A scan on July 20 revealed a tumor on her skull. She recently underwent surgery to remove a portion of the tumor but will have to undergo another year of chemo and radiation to reduce the size of the remaining tumor.

Sophia said she woke up the next day and thought the diagnosis had been a bad dream until she saw the place on her arm for her IV for the scan.

"It was a shock," Sophia said. "I thought it might be something else.&nbsp; I was pretty shocked because I was doing really good. I have been exercising more, and my legs have been getting better. I have been doing a lot more normal stuff. All of a sudden, I noticed the swelling on my head.

"I just didn't know it was going to come back. I thought for sure I was going to be past that stage."

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/631f1a39-e8c8-4583-8423-215778d42ccc">In her earlier bout with cancer, Sophia had temporarily lost her ability to walk because of a tumor on her spine. She was able to regain her ability to walk and walked across the stage in 2022 to receive her diploma from Thomas More Prep-Marain.</a>

Both Sophia and her mother, Jenny, said they were concerned about the location of this new tumor. A test of the tumor revealed that it was Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a reoccurrence of her bone cancer.

The tumor is not in her brain but a part of her skull.

However, Sophia's radiation treatments will still be targeted at her head.

"It's kind of scary being in my head rather than my back," Sophia said. "I know everything happens for a reason. I know God has a plan for me. All I can do is pray. I am thankful for everybody's prayers and support, and I know it will get me through this time around just like it did through the other two rounds."

A full body scan determined Sophia had no cancer in any other part of her body.

"I know God's got a reason for everything, and I trust his plan for me," Sophia said. "I know He'll get me through it again. I have to go through it a third time, but may it's going to help someone else—my story."

Jenny said the family has yet to recover financially from Sophia and Stan's cancer treatments.

Sophia is at home in Hays recovering from her surgery before she is set to resume treatment at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

"She has 29 staples in her head, but she is recovering pretty well," Jenny said. "We have our moments of up and down. It's a hard thing to have to go through again."

Sophia, who is an art major at FHSU, said she is unsure if she will be able to continue her studies at this time because of her treatments.

"It's been pretty hard," Jenny said. "I know I have to be strong for her. I pray all of the time that I get a Band-aid sent down to me, and it's a permanent Band-aid that takes it away.

"As moms, we're supposed to be able to help the pain go away or the hurt go away, but I can't. I have been praying for that Band-aid since she was 15. She's 19. I'll continue to pray for that permanent Band-aid that won't come off, and it takes that cancer away."

FHSU student, TMP grad facing third battle with aggressive cancer

HaysMed ended its parking assistance program at the beginning of July.

The program was suspended for 22 months during the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the program was parking about 20 vehicles per day.&nbsp;

In the 18 months after the program was reinstated, the service was only parking about eight vehicles per day.

Shae Veach, HaysMed vice president of operations, said hospital officials did not think they could dedicate the staff for a program with such low usage.

"Staffing is a challenge, and we see it in every business across all of Ellis County and across every business," he said.

The hospital has added five handicapped parking stalls at the front entrance. It also is offering a transport service.

Between 8 a.m. and about 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m., patients can ask volunteers at the front desk for transportation assistance.

Veach also suggested patients confirm with their providers which entrance they need to use. If the patient is concerned about a transport issue from the parking lot, he suggested contacting the hospital in advance.

"Communicate with us," Veach said. "We're going to do what's best for folks at the end of the day. Call us and give us a little bit of a heads-up. You've got to be patient with us so we can someone out there.

"We want to do what's right for patients and the community as well."

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostHaysMed ended its parking assistance program at the beginning of July.The program was suspended for 22 months during the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the program was parking about 20 vehicles per day.&nbsp;In the 18 months after the program was reinstated, the service was only parking about eight vehicles per day.Shae Veach, HaysMed vice president of operations, said hospital officials did not think they could dedicate the staff for a program with such low usage."Staffing is a challenge, and we see it in every business across all of Ellis County and across every business," he said.The hospital has added five handicapped parking stalls at the front entrance. It also is offering a transport service.Between 8 a.m. and about 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m., patients can ask volunteers at the front desk for transportation assistance.Veach also suggested patients confirm with their providers which entrance they need to use. If the patient is concerned about a transport issue from the parking lot, he suggested contacting the hospital in advance."Communicate with us," Veach said. "We're going to do what's best for folks at the end of the day. Call us and give us a little bit of a heads-up. You've got to be patient with us so we can someone out there."We want to do what's right for patients and the community as well."

HaysMed ends parking assist; some transport help still available

The final plat of the Doonan Addition&nbsp;just north of the Interstate 70 Exit 157 was unanimously approved by Hays city commissioners at their meeting Thursday afternoon.

City staff, as well as the Hays Area Planning Commission, had already recommended approving the final plat.

The four lots, ranging in size from&nbsp;four to 10 acres, are at the southeast corner of 230th Avenue and 55th Street.&nbsp;

The properties are owned by BBJ, LLC and have remained natural grassland except for the Doonan Peterbilt dealership that was built in 2014. 

"Tracts one, two and four were annexed into the city in April. Tract three will be annexed within three to five years according to a pre-annexation agreement," said Jesse Rohr, public works director.&nbsp;

The platted lots south of 55th Street are zoned general commercial and the lot north of 55th Streete is zoned agriculture.&nbsp;

Completing the platting process will allow development to occur on the property.&nbsp;

Utility work for extending city water and sewer to the area is almost complete.

Commissioners also approved a pre-acquisition services agreement with 4D Acquisition and Consulting, LLC, Onstead, MI, for R9 water pipeline land between Edwards County and Ellis County. The&nbsp;$28,375 cost will be funded out of the water sales tax reserve.

In other business, commissioners approved mayoral appointments to the following city boards:

Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Committee Elinda Mages Hays Public Library Board Joe&nbsp;Lohmeyer Hays Recreation Commission Board Zach Binder&nbsp;

The commission also approved the cereal malt beverage license application for the Volga German Centennial Association/Oktoberfest.

Commissioner Alaina Cunningham joined the meeting via telephone. Vice-Mayor Sandy Jacobs was absent from the meeting.&nbsp;

Final plat approved for commercial development in north Hays

Canning produce correctly is essential to safe food preservation, and according to Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee, two key ingredients to make many canned or pickled foods safe are bottled lemon juice and vinegar.

“Bottled lemon juice is standardized, or uniformly acidified, per U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations,” Blakeslee said. “Therefore, it is consistent, which provides a known level of safety for food preservation.”

The acidity of the product is important to prevent the growth of microorganisms that can cause spoilage or foodborne illness. 

Fresh lemons have an inconsistent acid, or pH, level. This can vary within the same variety of lemons but also vary due to maturity, growing conditions, soil, fertilizer, rootstock, and storage conditions.

Researched and tested recipes have been created and evaluated to achieve the safest food product in the end.

“Taking shortcuts in food preservation can lead to spoiled food, foodborne illness, and in rare cases, death,” Blakeslee warned.

If using vinegar, the first step is to read the label. Look for vinegar that is 5% acidity, but not all vinegar is the same. They range from 2.5% to more than 6% acidity. If it is not 5%, it could lead to improperly acidified foods and unsafe foods after processing.

“Do not use any vinegar labeled for cleaning purposes as they may contain other ingredients that are not safe to consume,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called You Asked It! that provides numerous tips on food safety. More information is also available from the Cottonwood Extension offices in Great Bend and Hays.

Today I drove through the McPherson Valley Wetlands to see if the waterlilies were blooming, or if there was even any water to support them. Evidently there is just enough water for a few of them to grow and bloom, because some of their large yellow flowers dotted what otherwise appeared to be a sea of green weeds.

 </figure>Today I drove through the McPherson Valley Wetlands to see if the waterlilies were blooming, or if there was even any water to support them. Evidently there is just enough water for a few of them to grow and bloom, because some of their large yellow flowers dotted what otherwise appeared to be a sea of green weeds. I remember several years ago clambering up over the dike of one pond to be greeted by what looked like something from an exotic Chinese water garden. I’ve always called them water lilies, but the Public Lands Manager for the Kansas Dept of Wildlife and Parks who manages the entire McPherson Valley Wetlands system tells me their proper name is American Lotus, and says they are, in fact, native to Kansas. That reminded me of Pepé Le Pew the skunk from cartoons of my generation. Pepé fancied himself a ladies’ man, and his famous pickup line was “Ah, my little lotus flower.”The year I first discovered them was a wet year, and they filled the shallow waters in the corners of the pond like a mat of immense green leaves dotted with bold, pale, yellowish-white flowers the size of cereal bowls. Most of the time these plants are shown with their enormous leaves floating on the water, but here where the water was shallow they actually rise above the water’s surface. Most of the leaves on these plants were about a foot wide, give or take, and the flowers that were fully opened measured six inches across. Leaves on older American Lotus plants can reach 24 inches in diameter. An interesting phenomenon is that American Lotus leaves never get wet; water forms a droplet on them and just runs off.Each flower has a bright, yellow, round center resembling a little double-layer cake. When the flower dies, that center swells into a seed pod three or four inches wide resembling a wasp nest with several individual seed compartments that each contain a single marble-sized seed. As it further dries the seed pod droops toward the water and the seeds eventually spill out and lay on the bottom of the pond. The seeds can lay dormant in the mud for several years before germinating, which occurs when the hard outer shell softens. The plants grow from tuberous roots called rhizomes which can become up to 50-feet long and can have dozens of plants growing from them. American Lotus plants will grow in the still water of any pond, lake or stream that is shallower than three feet.Waterfowl and other wildlife will eat the seeds and tubers if they can get to them. Native Americans peeled and cooked the tubers to eat as vegetables, or dried and stored them for winter food. They ate the seeds in soups and other dishes or roasted them like chestnuts. Many Great Plains tribes attributed mystic powers to the American Lotus plants. A poultice made from the pulp of the root was thought to relieve the pain of inflammatory ailments such as arthritis, and a mash made from the blossoms and leaves was said to have anti-fungal properties. Although little sound research exists concerning the medicinal properties of the American Lotus, a close cousin, the Indian or Sacred Lotus which is native to Asia and Australia has been used medicinally for generations. It is known to relieve asthma, inflammation, headache and fatigue, and is said to promote good digestion.When I first visited Kansas over 30 years ago, I either bought or was given a decorative seed pod of some sort that was brown and hard with numerous round compartments in it, each containing a round hard seed of some sort. I was told they were called “lake nuts.” That decorative object has long since disappeared, but at the time I remember no one seemed to know what the heck it really was. Guess what - after writing this column I now know it was an American Lotus seed pod! I never cease to be amazed at the wildlife and plants which flourish here in Kansas that common sense tells me shouldn’t be here in our prairie state at all. For instance, beavers and bobcats here in Kansas, really; and now waterlilies!!! Of the American Lotus, someone has said, “Whenever you doubt your self-worth, remember the lotus flower. Even though it plunges to life beneath the mud, it does not allow the dirt that surrounds it to affect its growth or beauty. Boy, howdy, can we use a heapin’ portion of that today!
