“Round `em up and ride” to the Hays Public Library for the Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest on Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m.&nbsp; Cowboy poets will be competing to see who is the best rhymer of the west.

The Hays Public Library, 1205 Main Street, will be hosting this regional contest for those presenting original cowboy poetry:&nbsp; rhyming verse with a western theme.&nbsp; Poets will be presenting in two categories:&nbsp; Serious and Humorous.&nbsp; Contestants are judged on quality, theme, and presentation. The winning poets advance to the state finals, to be held on June 9 in Manhattan.

Anyone is welcome to enter the contest as long as the poems which they present are their original writing.&nbsp; Entries can be submitted online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cowboypoetrycontest.com/" target="_blank">www.cowboypoetrycontest.com</a>.

The public is invited to attend for free.&nbsp;

Hays High Athletics Hall of Fame announces 2023 class

HaysMed has received the American College of Cardiology's NCDR Chest Pain - MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the fifth year in a row.

 Out of all the hospitals in the United States, only 262 have been honored with this award.

The award recognizes HaysMed's dedication and success in providing a higher standard of care for patients who have had a heart attack. It shows that HaysMed has met a challenging goal of treating these patients according to the guidelines and recommendations set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

To receive the Chest Pain - MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, HaysMed has consistently achieved high performance in the national registry. They have also met specific performance measures that demonstrate their commitment to improving the quality of care for heart attack patients. This includes a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

The award recognizes HaysMed's leadership and dedication to providing excellent patient care and signifies HaysMed's commitment to delivering high-quality cardiovascular care and ensures that patients receive the best possible treatment.

It validates that HaysMed’s healthcare providers consistently treat heart attack patients based on the most up-to-date, science-based guidelines. It also reinforces that HaysMed consistently meets the national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety, and outcomes of care provided to patients with coronary artery disease, particularly those at high risk of heart attacks.

HaysMed recognized for high standard of care for heart attack patients

The 49th annual Auction for Christian Education (ACE) at Thomas More Prep-Marian schools held April 28 was a&nbsp;phenomenal success. 

With everyone's support, we were able to raise $892,000, the most ever.

Item #160, funding for the new Creative Learning Building, raised $525,000.&nbsp;A special thank you is made to the Leo J. and Albina Dreiling&nbsp;Trust for their generous $250,000 match to our Item #160.

A portion of the funds will be used for drainage at the school's football field, and security upgrades.&nbsp;

The numbers are preliminary as some donations continue to come in.

If you would still like to donate to the Item #160 project,&nbsp;contact the Alumni Office by May 31.&nbsp;

We at Thomas More Prep-Marian are so blessed to&nbsp;have such a wonderful community and supporters behind us.

49th annual ACE auction brings in top dollars for TMP-M

The Hays City Commission will be asked today for a resolution of support for a $1.4 million moderate-income housing grant application for a 48-unit apartment complex on city-owned property at 10th and Walnut.&nbsp;

The location is more commonly known as the site of the old train depot.&nbsp;

Mike Graham is the developer of the proposed project and hopes to utilize a moderate-income housing/American Rescue Plan Act  grant from the&nbsp;Kansas Housing Resources Corporation to help fund construction.

Commissioners also will hear a resolution from Kim Rupp, director of finance, regarding the&nbsp;sale of general obligation bonds for&nbsp;permanent financing of&nbsp;the King’s Gate 2nd Addition infrastructure improvements.

Due to the relatively small size of the&nbsp;offering, Rupp is&nbsp;recommending a bank placement rather than a traditional bond sale. In a memo to commissioners, Rupp said he thinks rates will be competitive, and the process is cheaper and more streamlined.

BUNKER HILL - The Bunker Hill Historical Society was recently awarded a $1,200 Dane Hansen Community Grant for Russell County to build a handicap accessible ramp for the museum entrance. 

The Bunker Hill Museum is located in the former Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, a native limestone building which was built in 1881.

The Bunker Hill Historical Society also received a $500 Midwest Energy grant to purchase storage containers for the Bunker Hill 1880-1930s newspaper collection that was given to the Bunker Hill Historical Society by the State Library of Kansas. The Midwest Energy grant funds were also used to purchase new binders to store the collection of local family histories, as well as to purchase materials to label museum artifacts.

Mariella Dreiling, a Senior Girl Scout from Hays Troop 10095, worked on the projects to pursue the Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting and is equivalent to a Boy Scout Eagle Award. Assisting Mariella on the ramp project were Mariella’s father, Myron Dreiling (Dreiling Industries) and Mariella’s grandfather, Ryan Cook (Cook’s Home Remodeling &amp; Construction).

The Bunker Hill Museum and the 1875 Forest Hill schoolhouse are open to the public on Sundays 1 p.m.-4 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Governor Laura Kelly announced that $30 million has been awarded to 18 recipients developing and improving tourism sites statewide. Funding was made available through the State Park Revitalization &amp; Investment in Notable Tourism (SPRINT) program launched by the Department of Commerce earlier this year. Included in the list is the Wilson Czech Opera House Corporation for $100,000. The funds will be used to get the fence down and become a notable tourist destination and drive additional traffic into Wilson.

Community leaders established a $600,000 goal to restore the 1901 Wilson Czech Opera House following a 2009 fire. The renovation will turn the opera house into an open-air theatre.

“A thriving tourism sector is critical for the Kansas economy,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants enhance attractions that draw visitors to the state and showcase what makes Kansas a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The funds were designated by the Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Executive Committee and approved by the State Finance Council to support capital projects that spur regional economic development in the tourism industry, one of the most affected industries by COVID-19.

“Increasing the appeal of our state parks and other tourist attractions will have a notable impact on local communities as well as the entire Kansas economy,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The SPRINT awards support major projects that will attract new visitors across the state.”

Visitor spending, which generates a total annual economic impact of $11.2 billion in Kansas, has yet to return fully to pre-pandemic levels.

“Tourism is an important aspect of the Kansas economy, a sector in which 85,000 Kansans already are employed,”&nbsp;Senate President Ty Masterson said. “From parks to other attractions, Kansas has so much to offer those traveling and seeking to learn more about our state. The SPRINT grants will help ensure they remain vibrant for decades to come.”

SPRINT applications included investments in state parks, museums, convention and visitor bureaus, conference centers, performing arts centers, entertainment venues, and other tourism-focused businesses and tourism agencies. Recipients will use funds towards infrastructure enhancements, renovation and repair of facilities, general construction, public land development, recruitment costs for permanent and semi-permanent exhibits, and costs for national museum affiliation. Awardees will have two years to complete their projects and utilize all awarded funds.

“Our attractions and outdoor recreational opportunities benefit residents and visitors alike,”&nbsp;House Speaker Daniel Hawkins said. “The SPARK Committee wanted to enhance these sites and improve the quality of life in nearby towns and cities.”

Wilson Czech Opera House receives $100K to improve site

 Fort Hays State's WR and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship (RCOBE) recently announced outstanding faculty members from each of its four academic departments.

An Ellis County District Court judge rejected a South Carolina man's request for probation on a charge he robbed&nbsp;All the Rage Studios in Hays.

Irving Brooks III was sentenced to 32 months in prison for a charge of robbery, 12 months for aggravated assault and six months for fleeing and eluding law enforcement by Judge Glenn Braun. Brooks also was ordered to serve 24 months of post-release supervision.

Braun ordered the sentencing to run concurrently.

Brooks also was ordered to pay $828 in restitution for a victim's medical expenses, $24 for the money that was stolen from the salon, plus court fees.

Brooks was given credit for 425 days he has served in the Ellis County Detention Center.

Alex Herman, Brooks' attorney, had recommended Brooks receive probation per a plea deal.&nbsp;

However, Braun noted during the hearing on Tuesday that a victim in the case had expressed frustration at the proposed sentence for Brooks.

Although Brooks only had three misdemeanor charges in his criminal history, Braun noted Brooks had multiple arrests in multiple states, including charges of domestic violence and assault.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/d3f396ee-01c5-46d7-8fa2-c4e18a93a2b1">Brooks&nbsp;pleaded guilty in March&nbsp;to entering the All the Rage salon, threatening an employee, taking $24 and then leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that started in Russell and ended on north Vine Street in Hays.</a>

A Hays law enforcement officer was injured and three vehicles were damaged in the pursuit.

Although Brooks lead the victim to believe he had a gun during the robbery, further investigation determined Brooks did not have a firearm during the robbery.

In his allocution, Brooks said if he was granted probation, he would return to South Carolina and intended to live with his mother while he attended drug treatment and then welding school.

He said his ultimate goals were to be a deep sea welder and a minister. He said he also hoped to work so he could pay child support for his 10 children.

When Brooks addressed the court, he said that he was on drugs when the crimes occurred.

"I need a chance to redeem myself," he said.

Tuesday he called them a wish list and not a plan.

Brooks also is facing charges in Colorado for allegedly stealing the vehicle he was driving when he was arrested in Kansas. Those charges include robbery, aggravated motor vehicle theft, theft, menacing and criminal mischief.

Brooks waived extradition to Colorado prior to his sentencing on Tuesday.

South Carolina man sentenced to prison for robbery of Hays salon

A man who has been convicted of robbing a Hays Dollar General had his sentencing continued Tuesday in Ellis County District Court while he awaits extradition to Kentucky on more robbery charges.

Batalova Senuoke, armed with a handgun, threatened a 27th Street Dollar General employee and forced the employee to give him cash on July 21, 2022.

Senuoke of Columbus, Ohio, Bryan Anthony Parsley, also of Ohio, and a third person fled the scene. They were eventually spotted by a highway patrol trooper in Oakley. They fled an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 70 at a high rate of speed before a trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention, and both vehicles rolled.

Senuoke faces two counts of first-degree robbery in Kentucky. Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson said he has spoken to the prosecutor in Kentucky, and the prosecutor there estimates Senuoke could face 10 years in prison if convicted in Kentucky.

Senuoke agreed to a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery in Kansas and waived his extradition to Kentucky. The sentencing in Kansas was continued.

Anderson has recommended Senuoke be allowed to serve his sentences in Kentucky concurrently with the sentence in Ellis County.

"I am the one who is wrong here. That's the bottom line,"&nbsp;Senuoke said.

He said he wished to go back to Kentucky to take responsibility for what he had done.

"I thought bad of you guys when I first got here, but I just did bad," Senuoke said at his hearing Tuesday.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/cc9735a0-e5c1-4f99-ba09-51b7131b9095">Bryan Anthony Parsley pleaded no contest in April&nbsp;and was found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery, a level seven-person felony, for his role in the robbery.&nbsp;</a>

Anderson said during Parsley's hearing that Parsley entered the store with Senuoke and helped check to make sure there were no children in the store.

Anderson said Parsley eventually said he did not feel comfortable and left the store, stealing a package of toilet paper.

Parsley is set to be sentenced at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Ellis County District Court.

The Ellis County Commission Tuesday decided to keep the 12th Street bridge open and convert a bridge on 100th Avenue to a culvert.

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackey presented the commission earlier this month with a proposal to close the deteriorating 12th Street bridge on the western edge of Hays. Mackey hoped grant funds received from the closure could be used to repair a bridge over the Saline River in northern Ellis County.

Mackey said the county has had several engineers over several years look at the bridge and recommend closure.

However, several county residents expressed concerns about closing the 12th Street bridge. Among them was local attorney John Bird.&nbsp;

Bird, who lives west of the bridge, brought up several concerns to the commission, including the ability of emergency vehicles to get across the railroad tracks in the event of a train derailment and the amount of traffic that uses the bridge.

Bird was at the commission meeting Tuesday and thanked the commission for choosing not to close the bridge at this time.

Instead, Mackey recommended that the load limit be reduced on the bridge, patching be completed, and work done on the approaches to the bridge. The cost would be $20,000 to $25,000.

"We are just going to put a band-aid on it to get our stuff in line," Commissioner Neal Younger said.

Mackey&nbsp;said this would not repair the bridge but only make travel for those who use the bridge a little smoother.

Mackey&nbsp;estimated the bridge replacement would cost more than $1 million.

Commission members acknowledged the bridge still may eventually have to be closed, but this will give them a few years to evaluate options on what to do with the bridge.

The 12th Street bridge is one of 11 bridges in the county that are rated in poor condition.

Mackey said the 100th Street bridge would be replaced by a culvert or concrete box, and the county could apply for the $50,000 in grants as a result of this work.

The cost to replace the 100th Avenue bridge with the culvert or concrete box would be $20,000 and $35,000, he said. The 100th Avenue crossing would still be able to carry traffic, but it would no longer be classified as a bridge.&nbsp;

The stream channel has changed, and less water is passing under the roadway. That crossing will only be closed to traffic during construction.

Commissioner Michael Berges said the 12th Street bridge had been ignored. Choosing the 100th Avenue bridge for closure this year will allow the commission to explore other options for the 12th Street bridge, he said.

The current commission has worked in recent years to set aside money in a special highway and road and bridge fund to pay to replace the aging county infrastructure.

"We know our system has got run down," Younger said. "We need to get on the right foot again. We know that going to take a lot of funding and finger-crossing hoping we can get some of these grants."

Bridge grants are in part based on population concentration in the area. Ellis County's population concentration is only 15 percent.

The cost would be $20,000 to $25,000."We are just going to put a band-aid on it to get our stuff in line," Commissioner Neal Younger said.Mackey&nbsp;said this would not repair the bridge but only make travel for those who use the bridge a little smoother.Mackey&nbsp;estimated the bridge replacement would cost more than $1 million.Commission members acknowledged the bridge still may eventually have to be closed, but this will give them a few years to evaluate options on what to do with the bridge.The 12th Street bridge is one of 11 bridges in the county that are rated in poor condition.Mackey said the 100th Street bridge would be replaced by a culvert or concrete box, and the county could apply for the $50,000 in grants as a result of this work.The cost to replace the 100th Avenue bridge with the culvert or concrete box would be $20,000 and $35,000, he said. The 100th Avenue crossing would still be able to carry traffic, but it would no longer be classified as a bridge.&nbsp;The stream channel has changed, and less water is passing under the roadway. That crossing will only be closed to traffic during construction.Commissioner Michael Berges said the 12th Street bridge had been ignored. Choosing the 100th Avenue bridge for closure this year will allow the commission to explore other options for the 12th Street bridge, he said.The current commission has worked in recent years to set aside money in a special highway and road and bridge fund to pay to replace the aging county infrastructure."We know our system has got run down," Younger said. "We need to get on the right foot again. We know that going to take a lot of funding and finger-crossing hoping we can get some of these grants."Bridge grants are in part based on population concentration in the area. Ellis County's population concentration is only 15 percent.

Trego Community High School hosted their 5th annual Trego
Classic Trap Shoot Friday night at the Hays City Sportsman’s Club. 

The Hays High Trap Team competed against teams from 4 area
high schools; Trego, Quinter, LaCrosse and Russell.

This trap shooting match was set up and ran just like the
state high school match coming up in June in Wichita. 

The participants each shot 100 rounds on the evening and
competed for individual and team awards. 

Hays High put on a good showing in both individual and team
rankings! 

We had the top 2 spots in both the Girls Varsity and Junior
Varsity Divisions. Then HHS took the 1st and 3rd in Boys Varsity Division. To
finish off a good night of shooting, Hays High Trap Team took 1st in Team
Points!!

The HHS trap team would like to send out a big thank you to
all the family and friends who came out to cheer them on Friday night! Your

HHS trap team wins Trego Classic

You don’t have to go to faraway countries – Greece, Cyprus or France, anyone? – to benefit from a popular style of eating.

In fact, Sharolyn Jackson says the Mediterranean diet is more a concept than a place.

“It really is an eating style that can have any flavor profile ” said Jackson, the state leader of K-State Research and Extension’s popular Walk Kansas program, a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim and move however they want to live more healthfully.

As part of this year’s Walk Kansas, which wraps ups up May 20, K-State Research and Extension offered a six-week pilot course on eating the Mediterranean way.

“The Med way is just healthy eating,” Jackson said. “But there are a lot of reasons why people feel kind of stuck when it comes to healthy eating. They think that it’s too hard, or too confusing. They get a lot of mixed messages from different places. And then they have this idea that it’s too expensive. They think it doesn’t taste good…or they don’t have enough time to prepare foods or plan what they’re going to eat. And maybe they have limited cooking skills.”

Instead, the Mediterranean eating style can be simple, and summarized in seven steps:

· Change your protein. Choose white meat poultry, like chicken and turkey, and lean cuts of meat. Eat fish and seafood at least 2-3 times per week. Replace some of the meat in your diet with plant proteins. Eat red meat less often and choose leaner cuts. Eliminate processed meats or greatly limit them.

· Swap your fats. Instead of butter, use olive oil or canola oil for cooking foods. Don’t eliminate fats; just choose better ones.

· Eat more vegetables. Three cups of vegetables, per day, are recommended. Choose dark greens, and a variety of colors.

· Eat more fruits. Get at least two servings/cups of fruit per day. Choose a variety of colors and include berries often.

Stick to about three ounces – about three small handfuls – so that you’re not over-doing it on the calories. Avoid nuts and seeds that are candied, honey roasted or high in salt.· Choose whole grains. Choose whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, popcorn and whole grain bread and pasta. Look for the word “whole” as the first item on the ingredient list.· Rethink your sweets. Limit intake to no more than three servings per week of high-sugar foods and drinks. Fruit is a good substitute for high-sugar desserts.These recommendations, don’t need to be abrupt changes. Move yourself slowly away (from your current eating habits) so that you feel like you’re not being deprived, but rather working toward making it a habit.These recommendations come from a curriculum titled, Med Instead of meds, developed by North Carolina state professor and registered dietitian nutritionist Carolyn Dunn.
