There was never any doubt that Terry and Jackie Arndt’s three sons would play soccer while growing up in Wichita.

Or that they would carry on the family tradition and all wear No. 7 jerseys in club soccer, the same number worn by their dad.

Or that they would all aspire to play college ball — like their dad.

But they probably never thought that two of them would end up at the same college, playing different sports.

Middle brother Blake is a 6-foot, 4-inch forward for the Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team and in his fourth season playing for the Tigers. Youngest brother Carson is in his first year as a kicking specialist for the Tiger football team.

Jackie Arndt said their boys were playing soccer almost before they could walk, then began playing competitively at age 4 for the Wichita Cyclones under the watchful eye of their coach and father.

The family lived, ate and breathed soccer while traveling many a mile across the state and to numerous states as well while the boys were growing up.

Even then, it wasn’t a big surprise when Carson decided to pursue football in college after spending the fall semester playing two sports for three years in high school.

Oldest brother Spencer and Blake were right on cue when they took off for college to follow their dreams after successful soccer careers at Wichita Northwest High School.

Carson looked to be on a similar path when he got to play one year of high school soccer with Blake in the fall of 2017.

After Blake took off for college, Carson knew it was up to him to carry on the family name at Northwest High during the next three years.

But it just so happened that the Grizzlies football team needed a kicker his sophomore season.

So Carson decided to give football a try, while also playing his first love — soccer.

That same year, Blake transferred from the University of Central Arkansas to Fort Hays State, where he made an immediate impact with the Tigers.

He was named conference offensive player of the year and newcomer of the year in the GAC/lMIAA following his first season and has racked up numerous team, league and regional honors every year.

And Mom and Dad continued putting lots of miles on their vehicles.

Meanwhile, Wichita Northwest enjoyed a lot of success in football, and Carson lost only three games during his three-year high school career. So he knew he had a couple of options after graduation.

An obvious choice was to follow in his brothers’ and father’s footsteps and pursue the chance to play soccer in college.

But then the COVID-19 pandemic leveled a lot of plans for athletes at all levels.

College players were granted an extra year of eligibility because of COVID, changing the recruitment picture for high school athletes for a couple of years.

The Butler Community College football program in nearby El Dorado showed strong interest in Carson, so he decided to change fields.

Carson had visited FHSU to watch Blake play soccer, and after earning all-conference recognition both years at Butler, he checked out the Tiger football team.

Carson is majoring in construction management, and FHSU features a state-of-the-art facility and one of the best programs in the country in that area.

“I knew Hays was a good town and the football community, too,” he said. “And with Blake being here, I was comfortable with the campus.”

So Carson became a Tiger, won the kicking job in preseason camp and is a perfect 13-for-13 on extra-point attempts this year.

Like Blake, Carson made a splash in the Tigers’ conference immediately. He earned special teams athlete-of-the-week recognition in the MIAA after helping FHSU upset nationally ranked Northwest Missouri State 17-6 during the third game of the season.

Junior Parker Janky recently returned from an injury and is back to taking care of kickoff duties. But Carson will continue to kick extra points and field goals. Blake earned a bachelor’s degree in business management in December 2022 and decided to use his COVID year in soccer this season.

With two sons competing at the same college, Terry and Jackie anticipated the possibility of watching both play in Hays on the same weekend.

So far this season, that hasn’t happened.

The Arndts will participate in FHSU Homecoming activities for the first time and watch Carson kick at Lewis Field Stadium. The Tigers (2-2) take on Lincoln University (0-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Tiger soccer team (2-5) is on the road for a two-game stand in Arkansas.

With this being Blake’s final year of collegiate soccer, the Arndts usually try to attend most of his soccer games if there is an overlap with football. But they decided to stream Blake’s games this weekend and come to Hays for Carson’s first homecoming at FHSU.

Spencer lives in Wichita but has prior commitments this weekend, so he will stream both teams to watch his brothers’ games.

While Homecoming weekends are always exciting, the Arndts are especially looking forward to Oct. 14.

The Tiger football team will entertain the University of Nebraska-Kearney at 1 p.m. on that Saturday, and FHSU soccer is scheduled to take on Rogers State (Okla.) University at 6 that evening.

“This is pretty neat, both of us being here competing at the same college,” Blake said. “It’s not something a lot of brothers get to do, and we get to experience it for at least one year.”

And you can bet that Terry and Jackie Arndt will be booking a hotel room for Oct. 14 in Hays.

NWester: Wichita brothers getting kick out of FHSU experience

NAMI Golden Plains, NAMI On Campus at Fort Hays State University, and the FHSU Psychology Club are coming together and sponsoring a walking event to spread mental health awareness.

Anyone is welcome to attend the event, which is taking place on Wednesday, October 4 at 5 p.m. The walk will begin at Frontier Park. 

However, members of NAMI Golden Plains, NAMI On Campus at FHSU, and FHSU Psychology Club will be chalking the walking trail along the dike near Frontier Park with uplifting messages at 3:30 pm, prior to the walk. Anyone is welcome to join that as well!

 There will be water and snacks provided at the event as well as a free will donation to help support the organizations.&nbsp;

NAMI Walk for Wellness to be held Oct. 4 at Hays Frontier Park

The Post Nine, vintage base ball team of Historic Fort Hays, will play the Hays City 9 team on Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. The game will take place at Historic Fort Hays.

Since forming the Post Nine club in 2017, suiting up the club with vintage style uniforms, bats and following 1869 ball rules the Post Nine team has hosted and played games with vintage teams from Wichita, Topeka, Denver, Emporia and Hays - Larks Alumni and Hays City 9.

In 2022, a generous donor supplied vintage style shirts and caps for the new Hays City 9 town team players. So, Post Nine players play against other “local boys” in the style of the 1860s!

Historic Fort Hays Post Nine Roster: Travis Gottschalk, Ryan Gottschalk, Justin Gottschalk, Jarrett Sanders, Tanner Willhoft, Lance Geyer, Cam Stramel, Chance Werth and Jeff Green.

The game is free and open to the public. Pack up the family, bring your lawn chairs and join us for afternoon&nbsp;of old-fashioned base ball. Popcorn and water will be supplied.

Vintage base ball game Oct. 14 at Historic Fort Hays

The annual outdoor water restrictions that began June 1 in Hays will end for the season on Saturday.

Outdoor watering was prohibited between noon and 7 p.m. for both city customers and private well owners.

But Ellis County is in a drought, with conditions ranging from severe to extreme, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

If the weather in Hays remains dry and windy, which it sometimes does in October, property owners should water landscape plants and turfgrass, if necessary, early in the morning or at night to make best use of water resources, said Holly Dickman, Hays water conservation specialist.

"Fortunately, with cooler night temperatures and shorter days, the need for supplemental irrigation is greatly reduced," Dickman said. "Always be sure to check the soil first before turning on your irrigation system or garden hose."

If your landscape is stressed and you need to make decisions about what to water versus what not to, Dickman said the top priority should be healthy, established trees.

"Trees are some of the most valuable plants in the landscape and take the longest to get established and mature. Therefore, trees should be considered at the top of the list when it comes to supplemental irrigation during drought,"&nbsp;Dickman said.

Trees may not show drought stress immediately.

"Sometimes it can be years later that the drought stress takes a toll on a tree's overall health," she said.

Dickman said to rank turfgrass at the bottom of your priority list because it's easier to replace and establish, if that becomes necessary.

The following water use prohibitions are effective year-round in Hays:

• No washing down of hardscapes such as sidewalks, parking lots or driveways • No known loss of water through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems • Escape of water from private property onto public property such as sidewalks or into the street gutter from landscape irrigation

Three-day weather outlook

The Robbins Banking Institute Lecture Series to be held Oct. 5 will feature Tom Hoenig, a highly regarded expert on economic and monetary policy. The event, sponsored by FHSU’s Robbins Banking Institute, Kansas Bankers Association, and Fort Hays State Alumni, will focus on information impacting businesses, consumers, and government.

Hoenig, vice chairman/director of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, began that role in 2012. From 1991 to 2011, he served as the eighth president of the Tenth District Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Hoenig is a distinguished senior fellow at the Mercatus Center, a George Mason University research center.&nbsp;

FHSU students, faculty, staff, state and local policymakers, bankers, business, and community leaders are invited to attend. Complimentary coffee and breakfast will be provided beginning at 8 a.m. in the Robbins Center at FHSU, One Tiger Place. Hoenig’s keynote address is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by a question-and-answer session. Closing remarks by Tommy Powell, director of the FHSU Robbins Banking Institute, will conclude the event at 11:45 a.m.

FDIC director to provide keynote for Robbins Banking Institute lecture 

The Golden Plains Quilts of Valor group awarded Quilts of Valor to five veterans in Hays recently at the VFW, 2106 Vine.&nbsp; 

United States Army veteran Petty Officer Second Class Marion Miller was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on September 18 at the VFW in Hays. Miller served from 1969 to 1975.  The quilt top was made by Edie McQuade with quilting by Amy Schartz Mellor.

The United Way of Ellis County announces the opening of the 2024 CARE Council application process. 

Any&nbsp;501(c)(3) that provides services in Ellis County is eligible to apply. The services must meet one of the three&nbsp;criteria of education, health, and financial stability.

The CARE Council is made up of 12 community volunteers who review the applications to determine funding for&nbsp;the United Way of Ellis County, city of Hays social service funds and alcohol tax funds, and Ellis County&nbsp;alcohol tax funds.

Heartland Dermatology Center acquires Manhattan Dermatology

VICTORIA—Infrastructure is almost complete on land that will
soon be home to a Dollar General location.

A recent desire for the company to evaluate Victoria as a
potential location was discussed at an <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/cd2fe98d-cfa2-4cf4-91c3-7dd4d7d039b6">Imagine
Ellis County meeting in March 2022.</a>

A committee was formed, and a little more than a year later, on March 31 a landowner contacted the city requesting annexation of land just outside
city limits on what is now 1401 Old Hwy 40 after Dollar General had expressed
an interest in the property.

The land is not contiguous to the city limits, and so Ellis
County also had to approve the annexation, Mayor John Schulte said.

“There's a little strip of
land in between Dollar General and where the City of Victoria is,” he said. “So,
it was a bit of an odd process that we had to meet with the county commissioners,
and they gave their OK, and then it was basically back at our court to get
everything done.”

City leaders approved the annexation
and then worked to attach water and sewer service to the land.

“We're finishing up the water
lines, hopefully this week,” Schulte said. “The sewer line is done, I believe.
And really, from our point of view, that's about all we've had to do.”

He said the company has plans to begin construction as soon
as possible, with an opening expected late this year or early in 2024.

The Victoria location will be the fourth Dollar General in
Ellis County after the company opened a second <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b8db4883-04b7-410c-86c7-62f9673c9306">location
in Hays last year</a>&nbsp;and a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5ea31f69eb7f170536036156">location in Ellis in
2021.</a>

In recent years the company has expanded rapidly, with plans
to open almost 1,000 new locations before the end of the year. Serving small
communities has been a long-time focus for the Tennessee-based company that
currently has over 19,000 stores in the U.S.

Founded in 1939, the chain has 31 distribution centers as
well and employs more than 185,000 people. 

Schulte said the community has been overwhelmingly supportive.

“It's
been 10 years, at least, that we've been without a grocery store,” he said. “So,
everybody has had a drive to Hays to get their stuff. We're all just excited.
We will be able just to drive a quarter mile down Old 40 to get to Dollar
General to get most of the things we need.”

Infrastructure nearly complete for Victoria Dollar General

Work on the future home of the Ellis County Public Works
Department could start as soon as Nov. 1 after the Ellis
County Commission approved a bid this month for almost $6 million for
construction of the facility.

In June of last year, the Ellis County Commission <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/ad81dc5d-dbdf-40f0-b880-863538663ba9">approved
the purchase</a> of 75 acres of land just off U.S. Highway 183 north of Hays. At last week’s commission meeting, the commission approved the base bid and
seven alternates for the construction of the facility from PWC Inc. for $5.9
million.

The commission chose PWC from five businesses for the base
bid of $5.3 million and seven alternates for an additional $314,000.

Ellis County Administrator Darin Myers said PWC not only
had the lowest base bid but also had the lowest combined bid.

The bid also contained a 360-day timeline for completion. However, there are some allowances for weather delays.

Public Works staff are handling the site prep and Director
Brendon Mackey said they are progressing.

“We'll have the building areas done before the Nov. 1 date,” Mackey said. 

The county has been transferring funds into the capital fund
to pay for the project and Myers said the commission’s latest $2 million
transfer put that fund over $7.1 million. The county also transferred an
additional $500,000 to help cover if the facility bids came in over budget.
Because the bids came in under what was expected, Myers said there is about $2
million left in that fund.

“This is the third year that we've made a transfer into that
fund to help save up this project, so that way, we weren't having to borrow the
money,” Myer said.

The commission also chose to set more money aside for the
project and finish it completely instead of doing it piece by piece.

“Since the commission's desire was to do it all upfront, do it
right now,” Myers said, “we had that transfer increase this year. That way,
the project would be fully funded and paid for by cash and not have to borrow
money or reduce any planned expenditure.”

After approving the bid, the commission <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/42cdad20-2f11-4046-a785-39b5d9156214">approved GLMV</a> as the
construction administration of the project for 1.5 percent of the project cost or a little
more than $84,000.

“This will help county staff,” Myers said. “As
commissioners are well aware, we're not overstaffed to have a whole lot of
extra time to take on a $5 million project. It's similar to the KDOT project.”

The commission also approved the installation of electrical
services at the site for $54,000 from Midwest Energy and $144,000 for the
county’s share of a larger fiber optic network, through Nex-Tech, connecting
the city’s new fire station on 41st Street to the new public works
facility.

Construction to start later this year on new Ellis County Public Works facility

Besides checking for ripeness, how much time do you spend thinking about garden tomatoes or those for sale at the market? If you’re like me, not much.

Years back, I learned colonial Americans considered tomatoes poisonous so though gardeners grew them ornamentally, they didn’t eat them. Recently, this factoid drove me down a tomato rabbit hole after my daughter and I disagreed on when Americans first welcomed tomatoes as food rather than décor.

Once I started reading, I couldn’t quit, and here you’ll find some of my discoveries.

Tomatoes are a New World plant in the nightshade family that scientists think first started in the Andes about 80,000 years ago. Since no one now alive actually saw those vines and fruits, they can only speculate. 

Researchers suggest those ancient orbs grew to about cherry tomato size and may have been yellow or orange in color. Somehow (it’s disputed), some seeds found their way to Meso America somewhere between northern Costa Rica and Mexico. Ancient gardeners then cultivated what they called tomatl in their Nahuatl language. 

Additionally, they grew peppers, also in the nightshade family. Apparently, eating either one didn’t harm the population, which I’m guessing contributed to the development of salsa.

When conquistador Cortes returned to the Old World following his foray into Aztec-controlled Mexico, he introduced tomato seeds to a climate where they thrived. Southern Europeans enjoyed this new flavor sensation. 

Unfortunately, once tomatoes made their way to England, they gained a bad rap as a poison.

While some blamed the plant’s nightshade connection, modern scientists attribute resulting illness to the use of pewter plates, once popular in Great Britain. Acidic tomatoes leached lead from them, triggering toxic levels in those who ate from them regularly. As a result, southern Europeans developed plenty of tomato dishes while, in general, the English didn’t.

Brits transferred their food prejudice across the Atlantic via adventuresome settlers.

 Ironically or maybe expectedly, folks who settled the South happily consumed tomato-based recipes. 

New Englanders continued to reject what they called poison apples til the mid-1800s when savvy seed and food salesmen publicly demonstrated they could devour quantities of this questionable ingredient without ill effect.

The Civil War accelerated acceptance. Canneries boomed during those difficult years, and tomatoes canned well. Interestingly, that led to a tomato-generated Supreme Court decision two decades later.

The 1883 Tariff Act imposed duties on imported veggies but not on fruits. Clever entrepreneurs responsible for canning those plump orbs focused on the fact they were botanically fruits, not veggies, depriving the government of taxable income.

In response, tax collectors argued they functioned as vegetables and thus should be taxed. 

In 1893, the Supreme Court settled the argument. In a 9-0 decision, the Bench determined that though they classified botanically as fruits, people ate them with meals and not as dessert. As a result, local economies taxed them as vegetables based on the Nix vs. Hedden decision.

No wonder people still fuss over the fruit vs. veggie classification.

Next time you water your tomatoes or pick them for salad or salsa, keep in mind this popular produce’s complicated history.

 </figure>By KAREN MADORINBesides checking for ripeness, how much time do you spend thinking about garden tomatoes or those for sale at the market? If you’re like me, not much.Years back, I learned colonial Americans considered tomatoes poisonous so though gardeners grew them ornamentally, they didn’t eat them. Recently, this factoid drove me down a tomato rabbit hole after my daughter and I disagreed on when Americans first welcomed tomatoes as food rather than décor.Once I started reading, I couldn’t quit, and here you’ll find some of my discoveries.Tomatoes are a New World plant in the nightshade family that scientists think first started in the Andes about 80,000 years ago. Since no one now alive actually saw those vines and fruits, they can only speculate. Researchers suggest those ancient orbs grew to about cherry tomato size and may have been yellow or orange in color. Somehow (it’s disputed), some seeds found their way to Meso America somewhere between northern Costa Rica and Mexico. Ancient gardeners then cultivated what they called tomatl in their Nahuatl language. Additionally, they grew peppers, also in the nightshade family. Apparently, eating either one didn’t harm the population, which I’m guessing contributed to the development of salsa.When conquistador Cortes returned to the Old World following his foray into Aztec-controlled Mexico, he introduced tomato seeds to a climate where they thrived. Southern Europeans enjoyed this new flavor sensation. Unfortunately, once tomatoes made their way to England, they gained a bad rap as a poison.While some blamed the plant’s nightshade connection, modern scientists attribute resulting illness to the use of pewter plates, once popular in Great Britain. Acidic tomatoes leached lead from them, triggering toxic levels in those who ate from them regularly. As a result, southern Europeans developed plenty of tomato dishes while, in general, the English didn’t.Brits transferred their food prejudice across the Atlantic via adventuresome settlers. Ironically or maybe expectedly, folks who settled the South happily consumed tomato-based recipes. New Englanders continued to reject what they called poison apples til the mid-1800s when savvy seed and food salesmen publicly demonstrated they could devour quantities of this questionable ingredient without ill effect.<figure>

 </figure>The Civil War accelerated acceptance. Canneries boomed during those difficult years, and tomatoes canned well. Interestingly, that led to a tomato-generated Supreme Court decision two decades later.The 1883 Tariff Act imposed duties on imported veggies but not on fruits. Clever entrepreneurs responsible for canning those plump orbs focused on the fact they were botanically fruits, not veggies, depriving the government of taxable income.In response, tax collectors argued they functioned as vegetables and thus should be taxed. In 1893, the Supreme Court settled the argument. In a 9-0 decision, the Bench determined that though they classified botanically as fruits, people ate them with meals and not as dessert. As a result, local economies taxed them as vegetables based on the Nix vs. Hedden decision. No wonder people still fuss over the fruit vs. veggie classification. Next time you water your tomatoes or pick them for salad or salsa, keep in mind this popular produce’s complicated history. Free estate planning workshop offered by Heartland Community Foundation Oct. 12

The pros and cons of being a franchise owner in Hays were discussed by three local business people at Tuesday's Trispective hosted by Grow Hays.

Business creation and business retention are part of the mission of Grow Hays, said Doug Williams, executive director, and franchises are included in both areas.&nbsp;

"In my mind, a franchise is the opportunity to take a proven business model that's been replicated in many places and put that in place in a particular market," Williams said.

The panelists each had their own relationship with franchise opportunities.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Jamie Kuehl, a Hays native now living in Dodge City, is owner/operator of the two McDonald's restaurants in Hays, one each in WaKeeney, Russell, as well two in Dodge City.

His parents, Rick and Gail Kuehl, moved to Hays to open the first McDonald's franchise in 1979. His grandfather owned the chain's 71st store, which was built in the St. Louis, Mo., area.&nbsp;

Although he wasn't interested in it when he was young, Kuehl ultimately decided to join the family business as a next-generational operator.&nbsp;

That process requires a seven-year training program with McDonald's. A franchise lease is for 20 years and costs $45,000.&nbsp;

"I realized I wanted to be in business for myself, be an entrepreneur,"&nbsp; Kuehl said.

One of the best-known franchises in the world, McDonald's has a lot of power.

"Jamie's Burger Shack wouldn't sell very many hamburgers,"&nbsp;Kuehl said. "The global power of McDonald's brings a lot to the table, not only in national and local marketing, but in purchasing power for product."

The biggest challenge for Kuehl in the towns where he has restaurants is staffing.

It was a problem echoed by Kathy Schupman, owner of Kat's Hallmark Shop in downtown Hays and by James Younger, property manager at Big Creek Crossing, 2918 Vine, who works with franchisees in the shopping center.

The COVID pandemic compounded the problem.Kuehl estimated his labor costs have jumped $3 million in the past two years. Commodity costs are also up."That's why those burger prices keep climbing, just like everything else," he said.He also pointed out to potential franchisees that McDonald's owns the land and the building its restaurants occupy.&nbsp;<div><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CYxWuk-_AlU" title="Jamie Kuehl on franchise ownership" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>The three panelists also stressed that anyone considering buying a franchise must do their due diligence and read the fine print of the franchise agreement.Younger helps guide his potential mall lessees in the right direction, whether they're permanent, seasonal or temporary.&nbsp;"Do they have a feasibility study, a marketing study? As a leasing agent, my approach is not we can't, but how can we," he said.Non-permanent franchise agreements are a "less expensive way to get into entrepreneurship," Younger said. Younger said franchises appreciate that Hays is investing in new schools, has a low crime rate and has respected major employers. "But many franchises want 50, 60, 100 employees, and with an unemployment rate of less than 2 percent, that's hard to find. We also have a lack of affordable housing for people who move to Hays to work those jobs," he said.The role of indoor malls has changed dramatically in the American business landscape.Many stores want their own outside entrance with branding on the building. There are also fewer anchor businesses."The leasing process for Big Creek Crossing is anywhere from six to 12 months. Each case is different in negotiating for space," Younger said. He estimated 10 to 15 percent of the current tenants are franchises.Schupman offered a different perspective on the importance of location.Hallmark is not a franchise. In order to use the national brand name, Schupman first had to prove she had $500,000 in assets. Although there is not an upfront buy-in for the five-year lease, she pays a monthly advertising fee to Hallmark.Schupman's shop was first located in Big Creek Crossing, where she found many potential customers to be young teenagers uninterested in the Hallmark name and older walkers exercising, uninterested in shopping.She then moved to the strip mall, Tebo Village, north of Interstate 70 at 48th and Vine, where she had many out-of-state customers in addition to her dedicated area clientele.After six years, she needed a bigger store and&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/44c966e4-c112-4fbb-aa7a-0de780de4f16">moved to&nbsp;downtown Hays</a>,&nbsp;1003 Main, on June 14. The relocation took Hallmark several months to approve.&nbsp;Schupman said the new store site does get more foot traffic and called the downtown atmosphere "wonderful."Williams noted downtown locales typically don't attract franchises or branded stores.One of the most positive aspects of her business is the well-known Hallmark brand and quality and Schupman's ability to do local marketing. She recently purchased a $36,000 computerized cash register that keeps track of the customer rewards/points system."What I am is community-driven, grassroots," Schupman said. "I can tailor to what I want."Two products you'll find in any Hallmark store are the popular Hallmark Christmas collection ornaments and Hallmark-branded greeting cards. There is a large gift selection as well, but&nbsp;Schupman does not have the flexibility to price her Hallmark-branded products, which are pre-priced.All three speakers stressed a potential franchisee owner should be sure it's something they really want to do. Kuehl and Schupman likened being a franchise owner to being married."It also involves your entire family. It's your life," Kuehl said. "It's not a hobby.""You have to be flexible," Schupman added.
