First Care Clinic, Inc.
is pleased to announce Ross Kee, DDS, as its full-time dentist.&nbsp; Dr. Kee previously served on a part-time
basis as the Dental Director for the clinic but will be joining the dental
department full-time beginning October 1, 2024.&nbsp;


Dr. Kee earned his
Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School
of Dentistry. He comes to First Care Clinic from the La Crosse Family Dentistry
practice in La Crosse, where he served his patients for four years. Patients from
La Crosse Family Dentistry are now able to schedule with Dr. Kee at the First
Care Clinic location at 105 W. 13th St. in Hays.

“I am happy to announce that some of my current staff are making
the transition to Hays with me,” stated Dr. Ross Kee. “My patients will receive
the same exceptional dental care, just at a different location.”

“A little over a year
ago, Dr. Kee joined our clinic as Dental Director, and his leadership style

HaysMed welcomes new Convenient Care Clinic provider

Western Kansas Graham County native, longtime resident and farmer, Terry Davis of Hill City, is looking forward to the Inaugural Nicodemus Township History Trail Bike tour taking place on Saturday, October 12, 2024.&nbsp; Mr. Davis will be participating as a rider.

When asked about his experience as a rider, Mr. Davis shared that in his family, when someone reached their 9th birthday, receiving a bicycle was a given.&nbsp; Since the age of nine he has been riding bikes and he really enjoys it.&nbsp; He has ridden in many tours across different states with his daughters and by himself.&nbsp; Terry estimates that he has completed the annual Bike Across Kansas or BAK at least 25 times. One of the other prominent (known to cyclists) bike rides that Terry has completed is the RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across lowa).&nbsp; He said that he rides his bike by Nicodemus all the time.&nbsp; The history is what’s attracting him to join the ride.

While Terry admits that he is not familiar with the historical significance of the tour, the history is what enticed him to commit and participate.&nbsp; Mr. Davis is looking forward to the opportunity of riding his bike while learning about the history of the baseball field, church and other historical sites that were cornerstones in the Nicodemus community.

Because Terry has much more experience riding on pavement versus gravel, he has opted to ride the shorter 21.5 mile tour.&nbsp; Mr. Davis is hoping that his sister, brother-in-law and a daughter (all residents of Colorado) will also be joining him for the event.&nbsp; Terry encourages others to join the bike tour.&nbsp; Terry's motto is always, "the more the merrier" and hopes more folks throughout the community will consider this event.&nbsp; He stated that it’s a great form of exercise, fun and some rich history to be learned.

The Nicodemus Historical Society invites your entire family including the kids to bring your bikes and ride a FREE shorter route that will take you on a tour around the historic town of Nicodemus to various silhouettes, historic building sites and a few of the historic tour signs.

Come enjoy the free pancake breakfast sponsored by Kansas Black Farmers Association.&nbsp; Share a day of community history, fun, delicious food by “RC RubGrub BBQ” of Glade and enjoy live music by Graham County’s local musicians and house band for Mikkelson's Tavern, Butch Creek.&nbsp; A free showing of the documentary which illustrates the first settlers arriving in Nicodemus,"Ellis Trail To Nicodemus" will be featured on the big screen at 2:30 in the Visitor's Center.&nbsp; The day is expected to be great fun.

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County recently released data that broke down the number of needed child care slots by city.

As of Aug. 15, data from Child Care Aware of Kansas showed the following number of child care spots needed in Ellis County communities:

Hays — 114 Ellis — 109 Victoria — 4 Catherine — 21 Munjor — not available Ellis County total — 430

Child care task force members acknowledged that interpreting these numbers can be challenging.

Workers coming into Hays from other communities and counties may seek child care in Hays.&nbsp;

Andrew Curtright, a board member of the Hays Area Children's Center, said this could increase the demand for child care spots in Hays.

Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, said, "Child care is a very personal experience for families. It is quite possibly one of the most important jobs and professions we have because parents want to make sure their kids are in a safe space when they are going to work."

The latest data also does not address the type of child care needed.

There has long been a higher demand for infant care than care for older children, and Wasinger said she thinks the Child Care Aware numbers may reflect this need.

Until a recent regulation change, a child younger than 18 months old was considered an infant. The new regulations will classify an infant as a child 12 months old or younger.

More adult supervision is required for infants than for older children. Caring for an infant can decrease the number of children an in-home child care provider can care for. For this reason, some in-home providers do not accept infants or must limit the number of infants they care for.

When the child care center in The Grove addition opens in Hays, 75 additional child care slots will open. The project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2025.

If all the current centers stay open, that would bring the number of centers in Hays to 11 in 2025. The number of licensed child care homes in Hays has increased from 64 homes in 2022 to 68 in 2024.

The child care gap has been cut significantly since 2022. As of Aug. 15, the child care capacity in Hays increased from 772 slots to 1,096 slots.

One of the most significant jumps was in slots for school-age children. According to Child Care Aware, there were no school-age children programs in Hays in 2022. Now, there are two with a capacity of 160 children.

The Ellis school district is also working on a partnership to open more child care slots in its community.

Victoria's Aug. 15 data only showed a need for four child care slots. However, the Victoria Community Coalition has been in talks with local child care providers to move an existing in-home provider into St. John's Place.

The former nursing home is being renovated. Part of the building will be used for senior housing. The Ellis County Historical Society also plans to use a portion of the building for a satellite museum.

Victoria has no child care centers but has four in-home providers.

Munjor reported one in-home child care home, and no data was available on Catherine.

Melissa Schoenberger of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the state has seen an increase in unlicensed care.

She said these people are difficult to identify because the department is usually unaware of an unlicensed child care provider until a complaint is made.

She asked the child care task force if they would focus some of its education resources on informing parents about what questions to ask providers and how to choose a licensed provider.

Statutes recently changed that would allow some providers to care for more children. Schoenberger said that could also affect the available slots.

However, task force members noted that not all providers choose to operate at capacity.

The child care task force will continue its professional development series for providers at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall. Michael Berges will present a session on financial planning and business support.

Free fingerprinting for providers will be offered before the development session at 6 p.m.

The next child care task force meeting will be at 4&nbsp; p.m. Oct. 30 at the Hays Welcome Center.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostThe Child Care Task Force of Ellis County recently released data that broke down the number of needed child care slots by city.As of Aug. 15, data from Child Care Aware of Kansas showed the following number of child care spots needed in Ellis County communities:Hays — 114 Ellis — 109 Victoria — 4 Catherine — 21 Munjor — not available Ellis County total — 430Child care task force members acknowledged that interpreting these numbers can be challenging.Workers coming into Hays from other communities and counties may seek child care in Hays.&nbsp;Andrew Curtright, a board member of the Hays Area Children's Center, said this could increase the demand for child care spots in Hays.Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, said, "Child care is a very personal experience for families. It is quite possibly one of the most important jobs and professions we have because parents want to make sure their kids are in a safe space when they are going to work."The latest data also does not address the type of child care needed.There has long been a higher demand for infant care than care for older children, and Wasinger said she thinks the Child Care Aware numbers may reflect this need.Until a recent regulation change, a child younger than 18 months old was considered an infant. The new regulations will classify an infant as a child 12 months old or younger.More adult supervision is required for infants than for older children. Caring for an infant can decrease the number of children an in-home child care provider can care for. For this reason, some in-home providers do not accept infants or must limit the number of infants they care for.When the child care center in The Grove addition opens in Hays, 75 additional child care slots will open. The project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2025.If all the current centers stay open, that would bring the number of centers in Hays to 11 in 2025. The number of licensed child care homes in Hays has increased from 64 homes in 2022 to 68 in 2024.The child care gap has been cut significantly since 2022. As of Aug. 15, the child care capacity in Hays increased from 772 slots to 1,096 slots.One of the most significant jumps was in slots for school-age children. According to Child Care Aware, there were no school-age children programs in Hays in 2022. Now, there are two with a capacity of 160 children.The Ellis school district is also working on a partnership to open more child care slots in its community.Victoria's Aug. 15 data only showed a need for four child care slots. However, the Victoria Community Coalition has been in talks with local child care providers to move an existing in-home provider into St. John's Place.The former nursing home is being renovated. Part of the building will be used for senior housing. The Ellis County Historical Society also plans to use a portion of the building for a satellite museum.Victoria has no child care centers but has four in-home providers.Munjor reported one in-home child care home, and no data was available on Catherine.Melissa Schoenberger of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the state has seen an increase in unlicensed care.She said these people are difficult to identify because the department is usually unaware of an unlicensed child care provider until a complaint is made.She asked the child care task force if they would focus some of its education resources on informing parents about what questions to ask providers and how to choose a licensed provider.Statutes recently changed that would allow some providers to care for more children. Ellis County task force dives deeper into child care data

TOPEKA — The Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute graduated its 22nd class of 30 students on Sept. 5 at the KHA annual Convention and Trade Show in Overland Park, Kansas. Students were nominated by their hospital's CEO to be part of this select group. They represent the future leaders of Kansas hospitals.

Helping to build future health care leaders is important to the Kansas Hospital Association. “We are committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of hospital employees in Kansas,” said Chad Austin, president and CEO, Kansas Hospital Association. 

The KHA Leadership Institute was established to help hospitals provide professional development opportunities that accentuate the personal skills and abilities needed to facilitate positive change and innovation in Kansas hospitals.

The 2024 Leadership Institute class was diverse. They represented a wide geographic distribution of hospitals from St. Francis to Satanta and Parsons to Lawrence – there was representation from all parts of the state. 

Students had been working in health care for as little as a year to more than 20 years. Several students have been in management positions while others were new managers. Some students also supervise other staff, from a few to more than 50 employees.

It is important to note that the students nominated to participate in this program were not selected because they needed to learn "management skills." They were nominated because their CEO recognized their potential to be future leaders and wanted to help cultivate that development. Each one of these students made a personal and professional commitment to expand their skills by attending all six courses of the Leadership Institute.

The curriculum was structured to enhance each student's leadership abilities. 

Course #1 focused on explaining the difference between leadership and management, identifying organizational values and creating a positive organizational climate. Course #2 focused on enhancing communication skills and grassroots advocacy. Course #3 focused on team building - including how to lead a team and how to be part of a team and Course # 4 examined conflict management. Courses #5 was at the KHA Annual Convention and Trade Show. Students learned about the challenges facing health care.

Area residents graduate from 2024 Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute

The annual First Responders Softball tournament was completed on Sunday, September 29, 2024. This annual tournament brings together local first responders to compete and have fun while raising funds for worthy causes. Funds raised are donated to the Firemen Relief Association (FRA) and typically are used to support the Charlie Dorzweiler emergency response trailer. This trailer is equipped with emergency response items for first responders.

This is the 11th year of this tournament which is organized by Travis Hageman, Hays Fire Department Firefighter. The tournament was held at the Dusty Glassman ballfield with umpire, Kevin Randa.

Participating teams for the 2024 tournament included a team from the Hays Fire Department and Ellis County Fire Department, a team from the Kansas Highway Patrol, and a team from the Ellis County Emergency Medical Services. In past years the Hays Police Department has a team; however, on September 28th they provided notification that they would be unable to partake due to lack of participants.

The teams conducted a round robin bracket with the Kansas Highway Patrol as the victors. The Fire Department followed in second place, Emergency Medical Services in third place. The games were as follows: Fire Department, 9, vs. KHP, 10; Fire Department, 18, vs. EMS, 4. KHP, 12, vs. EMS, 2.

If curses and death wishes worked, a fly couldn’t survive let alone buzz in human ears or crawl on flesh near my house. In the last two weeks, I’ve thought or said, “Die fly,” at least 10,000 times. Unfortunately, wishing these creepy crawlers into the afterworld has no effect. It’s time to plan an attack.

You’d think cooler temperatures would slow the little buggers enough that I could pop them into fly Valhalla one by one. However, flies on my wall or ceiling laugh until they fall watching me trying to smack their relatives into tomorrow. Rolled up magazines, mail, empty paper towel tubes, plastic made-in-foreign-places swatters, and good old-fashioned palms serve as weaponry when buzzing autumn irritants sneak into our well-screened home.

Instead of dead insects creating autumnal ambience, crushed paper goods and cheaply made plastic tools accent each room. Crinkled magazines and newspapers lie near chairs. Cardboard cylinders crushed in the middle flop to the point they’re useless as armament. Most distressing, I sport bruises where I slapped myself trying to kill these germ-delivery agents. Adding insult to injury, I run around spraying disinfectant everywhere flies land to eradicate their microscopic slobbers and poopers. Fly patrol in the fall is an endless, thankless job.

Fortunately, common houseflies don’t live long—about 21 days. Unfortunately, they reproduce prolifically. Under optimal conditions, a single pair of flies and their progressive generations spawn nearly 200 quintillion family members during a single reproductive season. Food supplies--preferably feces or garbage--initiate breeding behavior in these miniscule monstrosities. Such knowledge inspires me to clean obsessively. Don’t wanna feed those bugs and have them . . . you know . . . around our place.

Though nasty, these disease-carrying insects are aeronautical wonders, which explains destroyed paper products and bruises. To aid missions of destruction, I learned flies flap their two wings only as long as their feet are free to move—hence a reason to use sticky fly paper. Successful pest whackers understand these guys leap up and backward upon take-off. This bit of trivia helped me understand why those in the know catch so many more flies than less informed folk.

Today, scientists, undoubtedly individuals who grew up successfully trapping and smacking flies, analyze these creatures’ flight technology. According to Michael Dickinson of the University of California, Berkley, ``Flies are the most accomplished fliers on the planet in terms of aerodynamics. They can do things no other animal can, like land on ceilings or inclined surfaces,'' he added. ``And they are especially deft at takeoffs and landings -- their skill far exceeds that of any other insect or bird.''

What these researchers learned in their study is that fly eyes, possessing 4000 lenses, are directly connected to their wing muscles. The minute they perceive stimuli, their body responds. Don’t act surprised when you find out someone created a futuristic robot with fly-like eyes and flight properties to discover the secrets of outer space, spy behind enemy lines, or snoop in your house.

After researching flies, I don’t feel so bad about missing so many. When that nefarious pest sees me putting the whammy on it, its little wing muscles automatically react, leaving it to reproduce another day. While I might not kill every fly I see, I can starve them to death. Where’s the Clorox?
