time on their hands went “calling.”&nbsp; As
either a pass into another’s home or as a token of the visit, guests left a business-size
card in a lovely dish placed on a table in the entryway.&nbsp; These ornate calling cards engraved with the
caller’s name held special significance if one bent the left top corner one way
or another meaning if a different corner were bent or torn.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While this
seems complicated in today’s more relaxed culture, I’ve found that nature introduces
calling cards of a different and less difficult-to-understand variety. While
walking hundreds of miles down country roads and paths, I’ve spied more than a
few calling cards deposited in the middle of the road to mark a local coyote’s
territory.&nbsp; These greetings, while clear
in their message, aren’t nearly as ornate or as collectible as those left by
our Victorian ancestors.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For those
unfamiliar with canid behavior, passing coyotes leave scat in strategic and
clearly visible patches of road or trail. They want other coyotes, foxes,
bobcats, house cats, dogs, and humans to acknowledge their domination of the
neighborhood. In fact, their very frequent messages pronounce their dominion
over the drive, pasture, and surrounding section roads. Anything or anyone else
trespasses.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
Victorian cards present the visitor’s name in ornate script, surrounded by the
filigreed designs, coyotes leave simple communication. However, the attentive
can read volumes in these tubular epistles.

Over summer and into fall, I interpreted a list of such messages.
Wild canids tend feed opportunistically. Though they possess a lovely set of
incisors designed to shred raw flesh, they also eat fruits, berries, and
melons.&nbsp; Late spring and early summer mid-road
deposits reveal nature’s fibrous, fruity “ink.”&nbsp;
These calling cards vary little in theme.

&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Some
include lines that state, “Hey, check out the mulberries.&nbsp; Who needs rabbits when berries fall from the
tree into your mouth?” Another might read, “Mulberries rule, but watch out for attack
birds.” By late summer, I might find a message along these lines, “If you
thought mulberries were good, you must try the currants. This season’s little
berries defy description—flavor and bulk make them first choice of all coyotes!”

Once berries shrivel and fall to
the ground, Yote pronouncements take on new texture and dimension.&nbsp; Rodents come back into fashion.&nbsp; The messages read, “Whoa, that was one big
bunny!” or “Packrats make great snacks.” Fall diets include plentiful rodent
fur and little round seeds I haven’t identified, hence the following motto,
“Eat a balanced diet—a little meat combined with a little grain make a coyote
sleek, sassy, and fast.”

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While it
may seem odd to relate a coyote’s natural bodily function to calling cards left
behind by Victorian gentlefolk, similarities exist. Relying on sight and scent
features, they intentionally drop scat in the road to serve the same purpose as
old-fashioned human calling cards. Dogs read it with their noses and quickly cover
its scent by lifting a leg. You read the announcement that you’ve invaded
another creature’s marked territory with your eyes and think, who poops in the
middle of the road?

The Hays school board had its first look at the architectural drawings for the additions/renovations at O'Loughlin Elementary School Monday night.

The project is part of a $143 million bond issue. Bids are set to go out this summer, and ground will be broken on Jan. 1. Estimated completion is August 2026.

The project will include two additions on the southwest and northeast sides of the school, totaling 12,000 additional square feet. The current building is about 46,000 square feet.

O'Loughlin Elementary School will remain a three-section school. That means it will have three classrooms for every grade, kindergarten through fifth. The square footage of the kindergarten rooms will be expanded.

The southwest addition will include a new cafeteria, commercial kitchen, art room and secure entrance.

The administrative offices will be moved to the southwest portion of the school to the new entrance and those spaces will be expanded.

The parking and traffic circulation will be reconfigured as part of the bond project.&nbsp;

A new road will run from the school to 12th Street. This will allow parents to drop off children via the current circle drive access off of Hall Street and through the new parking area off 12th Street.

The district's intent is to eliminate the need for vehicle stacking on Hall Street and Victory Road on the Thomas More Prep-Marian campus.

The east addition will include three new classrooms, one of which will be a collaborative classroom. The entire east addition will serve as a storm shelter and will be able to accommodate the entire student body and staff. The windows will be bullet- and high-wind-rated.

Once the addition is complete, the district will no longer need its portable unit, which it is leasing.

If additional space is needed, the collaboration classroom could be converted into a regular classroom, Fahey said.

The stage in the gym will be enclosed to create a music room, which will be wheelchair accessible by a new concrete ramp. The current music room will be turned into a STEM lab.

The Title 1 classrooms will be moved to give clearer views of the media center.

All the classrooms will have new flooring, paint, and ceilings where needed. The building's windows have already been replaced and will be retained in the renovation.

The additions will have firewalls and sprinklers. A fire standpipe will be added to the existing building.

Board member Derek Yarmer asked why the architects are proposing a one-story addition instead of a two-story addition, which was discussed earlier in the bond planning. He said he also thought another gym was in the plans.

Fahey said the two-story idea was in the early bond concepts, but a two-story building is more expensive. As O'Loughlin will be staying a three-section school, the additional gym will not be needed.

Roosevelt Elementary School is being expanded into a five-section school, and the new Felten Elementary School, which will be in the renovated middle school, will be a four-section school.

Board member Allen Park asked why the O'Loughlin renovation/addition costs more per square foot than the Roosevelt addition. Fahey said the O'Loughlin site plan is more complicated because part of the district land is in a 100-year floodplain.&nbsp;

None of the building will be in the flood plain.

The work also includes constructing a new road and parking lot to improve traffic circulation. The $19.78 million Roosevelt addition is on a flat piece of land and required little reconfiguration of the existing building, Fahey said.

Yarmer asked for a budget for the rest of the bond projects. He has expressed concerns that not enough money will be left from the bond to fully fund the renovations at the remaining schools—the current Hays High School, which will be renovated into a new middle school, and the current Hays Middle School, which will be renovated into an elementary school.&nbsp;

"We have no idea at this time because we don't have designs," Wilson said.

Hays BOE sees designs for O'Loughlin Elementary addition/renovation

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Kensington public water supply system located in Smith County. 

The advisory was issued because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; 

Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the city of Kensington indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Kensington in Smith County

Residents are urged to stand in unity at Rock Against Rape, a concert raising awareness of sexual violence through a night of electrifying music.

Hays-based Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services provides help and healing to victims of violence and abuse.

Options Campus Advocate Anniston Weber said the concert's mission is to connect with young adults 18 to 25.

"The goal is to reach college-aged students because they are at higher risk of being sexually assaulted," she said. "Hays is a college town and a lot of our culture involves drinking and partying."

The third-annual Rock Against Rape concert takes the stage at 7 p.m. on May 4 at the Home Event Center, 229 W 10th St.

The lineup includes young local bands and performers such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100084194772242">Adrian Parl</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Beforethewintermusic">Before the&nbsp;Winter</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/CactusCollateral">Cactus Collateral</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/dangerouslybiased">Dangerously Biased</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557616988843">Free Minded</a>.

"Free Minded is a group of college students who are heavily involved at the Fort Hays music department," Weber said. "They're a relatively new band, but they've performed for us for three years, and they're fantastic."

Advocates and volunteers will oversee the venue, while bartenders are prepared to recognize signs of sexual harassment or predatory behavior when serving alcohol.

The concert is open to anyone 18 and older, with a $10 admission fee for attendees younger than 21 and a $5 fee for those 21 and older.

Bar or restaurant owners who would like to participate in a training program on how to prevent sexual violence can call Options at 785-625-4202 to sign up.

"The concert is a way to connect with people through music and the tradition of coming together at a local bar to share stories and experiences," Options Executive Director Jennifer Hecker said.

Before their performances, band members will share information and statistics about sexual violence.

"We're trying to find light, easy ways to talk about a difficult topic that as a culture, we have not been comfortable talking about," Hecker said.

Options' resources will be highlighted throughout the venue.

Each performance will last about 50 minutes and will be scheduled to allow attendees to show their support.

"I try to put more mellow bands at the beginning of the night so people can come for the music and chill. As the night progresses, the music gets a little 'harder' so to speak," Weber said.

Rock Against Rape is not a fundraiser, but people can donate through QR codes at the event or the <a href="https://help4abuse.org/donate/">Options donate page</a>.

Hecker said the key message of Rock Against Rape is that rapists are responsible for sexual assault, not alcohol.

"It's about holding those perpetrators accountable and putting the blame where it belongs. Not on the victim, what they were wearing or how much they had to drink," she said.

🎙Options to host 3rd-annual Rock Against Rape concert May 4 in Hays

The city of Hays is looking at a downtown location for its new police facility rather than the land it owns at 27th and Main.

The design of the facility is included in this year's capital improvement plan, and construction is scheduled for 2025.

According to information submitted to the city commission, staff has evaluated several options and is now recommending the purchase of the Astra Bank building at 1100 Fort.

A recently completed space needs analysis shows the Hays Police Department will require 21,000 square feet of space in 2043. The Astra facility would provide 23,000 square feet with room for expansion.

The building would also include municipal court, moving it from the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center. 

The purchase and remodel of Astra Bank is significantly cheaper than construction of a new facility. 

The Astra option is $8 million, while new construction is $13 million.

If approved by city commissioners, the agreement would transfer a two-acre tract of land to Astra from the city's five-acre parcel at 27th and Main. Astra&nbsp;would construct a new facility and retail space at that location.

&nbsp;Once Astra vacates its current facility, the city would pay the bank $1.8 million and take possession of the building.&nbsp;

City commissioners are expected to vote on the staff recommendation at their meeting Thursday.

• Authorize a $67,000 design engineering contract with Driggs Design Group PA for reconstruction of 32nd/33rd Streets from Willow to Vine.

• Approve an ordinance&nbsp;adopting the modifications to the future land use map and amending&nbsp;the current comprehensive plan.&nbsp;In November 2021, the Hays and Ellis County reduced the extraterritorial jurisdiction by about 60%.

• Designating the Planning Commission as the&nbsp;Board of Zoning Appeals to  improve coordination between planning and zoning functions.

Equity Bank expands within home state of Kansas, acquires KansasLand Bank

The Hays USD 489 school board voted Monday night to change the Hays Middle School mascot to the Indians.

The Indians have long been the mascot for Hays High School.

The district is undergoing a $143 million bond issue. A new high school is being built, and the current high school, which is on the same campus, will be renovated to serve as the new middle school.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b03de214-a1e1-44df-8ea5-f597e5e62646">In 2022, the district formed a committee to evaluate the mascot for the new high school. The school board voted to keep Hays High's mascot as the Indians. They also voted to change the middle school colors to gold and maroon to match the high school colors.</a>

In 2022, a majority of community members said in a survey they supported the Indian mascot and the HMS and HHS mascots being the same.

Although uniting the mascots was discussed at that time, the change did not pass.

A survey issued to HMS staff last week also indicated a majority—41 out of 57 staff members—supported the HMS and HHS mascots being unified as the Indians.

Two weeks ago, board member Jayme Goetz asked the board to reconsider the question of the HMS mascot.

After a brief discussion on Monday, the board voted 5-2 to change the middle school mascot to the Indians. Board members Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp and Ken Brooks voted against the motion.

Board member Ruth Ruder said the logo is no longer an Indian headdress but an arrowhead with an H.

"I say we move forward now so coaches and teachers can move forward with where our district is heading, and we move away from this moving forward. One unit, one unity, one campus," Ruder said.

The HMS athletic director told the board members at their last meeting he was under a deadline to order uniforms for the next school year.

Zampieri-Lillpopp said the surveys indicated a number of people supported having the same mascot at both schools, but not necessarily the Indian mascot.

"As we are moving into trauma-informed models in a number of our schools, understanding historical and generation trauma imposed on people who were here before we were is very important," Zampieri-Lillpopp said.

She also said she thought it was inappropriate to bring the mascot issue to the board again when the board had previously voted on it. She said no new information was presented to warrant a reconsideration.

Board member Curt Vajanr said the issue failed last year in a tie 3-3 vote because a board member was absent. All seven board members were present last night.

Two members of the public spoke against the mascot change during the public comment session at the beginning of the meeting.

Anna Towns of Hays spoke against having the Indians as a district mascot for the second meeting in a row.

Towns read from a University of Kansas blog that quoted research by Stephanie Fryberg, PhD, about the negative effects of Native American mascots on young Native Americans.

According to the research, Native American mascots lowered self-esteem, academic goals, and sense of community worth and increased suicidal ideation and depression among Native American youth.

The research also showed exposure to Native American mascots resulted in increases in white college students discriminating against all people of color.&nbsp;

"Americans need to ask themselves why they want to hold onto something, especially if science tells us that it's harmful to that group," Towns said.

Cheryl Duffy of Hays also spoke against the use of the Indian mascot.

Duffy said the Kansas Board of Education recommended in November 2022 that all schools in the state abandon native American mascots in the next five years.

The American Psychological Association recommended against the use of Native American mascots in 2005. The National Congress of American Indians, which represents hundreds of tribes and millions of individuals, has also denounced the use of Native American mascots.

"Either we care about them, or we don't," Duffy said of Native American young people.

Hays USD 489 BOE votes to change Hays Middle School mascot to Indians

This year’s Hays Public Library Summer Reading Challenge theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library! Taking that theme to heart, the library will have weeks focused on adventurous subjects such as pirates, nature, dragons, and oceans. The challenge will run from May 20th&nbsp;to July 31st.

The library will use the online program Beanstack to track summer reading for children and teens. Through Beanstack, families register participants and use the program to log their reading progress. Staff will assist with sign-up and logging for those without computer access. Challenges have been created for each age group, early literacy, elementary, and young adult.

For children and teens, the Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting way to improve literacy during the summer months.&nbsp;Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during&nbsp;summer&nbsp;vacation, actually slip in reading ability by the time school begins in the fall.

Registration is required and begins May 1st, online or in person. Each child who registers receives a gift. A prize will be given to each child who completes their challenge by the end of the event on July 31st. Those who complete the challenge also will put their name in a drawing for the grand prize of their choice. The ending party, open to everyone, will be held at the Hays Aquatic Park on Aug. 2.

Adults participate in the Summer Challenge by completing activities on a bookmark that can be picked up at the library, beginning May 20th. They will receive a tote bag when they sign up. The much-anticipated annual United Way Golf Tournament is set to tee off for another memorable day of swinging for a cause. Scheduled for Friday, June 7 at Smoky Hill Country Club, this event promises to bring together golf enthusiasts and philanthropists alike for a day of sport and solidarity.

United Way Golf Tournament swings into action to support local partner agencies

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin multiple bridge repair projects along I-70 in Sherman and Thomas counties.

Project work is expected to start the week of April 22 and will take place on structures at the following locations:

During the work, traffic on I-70 will be reduced to one lane with a lowered speed limit. Traffic on U.S. 24 business and K-25 near the bridges will also be reduced to one lane. Motorists should plan for delays not exceeding five minutes.

KDOT expects work on the projects to be completed in October, conditions permitting.

Reece Construction of Salina is the primary contractor for the $1.1 million Goodland project. Wildcat Construction Co. of Wichita is the primary contractor for the Sherman County and Colby projects with a combined contract cost of approximately $2.2 million. There is a common joke in Kansas – and many parts of the country – that goes something like this: If you don’t like the weather right now, just wait a few minutes, because it will change! How many times do we start out the day with one type of weather and end the day with something completely different!

Weather in Kansas can change pretty quickly, so it’s important to know what to do in any situation in order to remain safe.

It starts with preparedness. We all should have a plan, including such things as just knowing how you get your weather alerts. You may get those from a weather radio or other sources, such as news media. And then, talk to your family.

It is a good idea for everyone to practice what they would do if faced with a real weather emergency. Parents can practice the plan with children well in advance of severe weather threats; doing so helps to ease children’s anxiety in a real emergency.

Practicing and having a plan saves lives. That is especially true in rural areas where appropriate shelter may be many miles away, a scenario many Kansans may be in.

Keep a weather safety kit that includes such items as non-perishable food, medicines, blankets, boots, extra clothes, helmets, weather radio, batteries, a charging device for phones and even a map to track the path of the storm while listening to news reports.

The best place to wait out severe weather is always the lowest, central location in the home. If you only have a first floor – and not a basement – the ideal spot is a centrally located hallway or bathroom. Stay away from windows.

If caught outside, don’t go under trees during thunderstorms and don’t try to out-run tornadoes in your car. A ditch is a safe place to go if you’re outside. Get down in the ditch; debris will typically blow over you. If you’re in a place without a ditch, get down on the ground as low as you can so you don’t have things hitting you.

· Get inside. Avoid porches and over-hangs. Stay away from windows.

· Stay off electronics that are hooked into a wall, including computer and cell phone.

· Stay out of the shower, or other water sources.

· On average, Kansas has 95 tornadoes per year. There has been as few as 17 tornadoes reported in 2020 and 190 in 2008.

· The peak time for tornadoes in Kansas is April through June, often referred to as tornado season.

· Tornadoes can occur any time of year and are solely dependent on atmospheric conditions.

· A basement or lower level of the house – away from windows -- is always the safest spot to wait out a tornado warning.

· Kansas gets approximately 600 wind damage reports annually.

· High winds – defined as those over 55 miles per hour – create problems not only by downing trees, but by making driving conditions and visibility more difficult.

· As with tornadoes, the safest place during a wind storm is inside in a central location, away from windows.

· In an average year, there are more than 1,000 reports of hail in Kansas. Severe hail is defined as 1 inch or more in diameter.

· One-inch hail can cause injury, damage to cars, and even damage house siding and roofs.

· Know your proximity to a flood plain to determine your risk, know the low-lying areas and where water runs.

· Away from home – and especially when driving – the risks due to flooding are much greater. On the road, the best advice is “turn around, don’t drown.”

· Six inches of water can move a car effectively.

· The road under the water may not be intact and could damage or disable your vehicle
