Laura Monroe's son can't wait to go to day care.

Monroe said in her nomination of Brandi Ficken as the Child Care Champion for April, "Brandi is absolutely the best! My son loves going to her and will ask every day if he can go to day care. 

"She does so many learning and fun activities with the kids, but also gives all the extra cuddles when needed!"

Ficken, who is a Hays native, graduated from Hays High School and NCK-Tech with a business degree.

Ficken, 25, worked at a preschool for five years. After her son, Jace, was born two years ago, she opened an in-home child care.

"This is the best thing," she said. "It worked out for me."

Ficken said the in-home child care means Jace and his mother can be together, but Jace can also make friends with the other children.

Ficken said she always knew she wanted to work with children.&nbsp;

"My favorite part is seeing them grow all of the time," she said, "just the differences in a week to a month. They are always learning something."

The children she cared for at the preschool are growing up.

"It's crazy to think how fast time goes," she said. "You're out in public. They're with the parents, and they're so big."

Ficken's child care curriculum is play-based, with ample time to spend outdoors. She said that manipulative toys are important for fine motor skill development, and outdoor exercise is crucial for children's gross motor development.

She also enjoys doing holiday crafts with the kids.

The children have to adjust to new rules when they enter a child care, but Ficken said she thought the children learn the routine quickly.

Ficken said she hasn't faced many challenges—the most significant hurdle has been helping Jace learn to share his house.

She would urge others who love children to try child care as a career.

"If you want to do it, just do it. Some days it's a rollercoaster ride. Some days are up, and some days are down, but that's OK," Ficken said.

&nbsp;As warmer weather approaches, the City of Hays Parks Department is preparing for another summer season by beginning annual maintenance and system checks at the popular Splash Pad in Seven Hills Park, located at 33rd St. and Hillcrest Dr.

City staff will perform maintenance and inspection activities over the coming weeks to ensure the facility is ready for public use.

Water will begin being pumped into the Splash Pad beginning May 5, giving staff the opportunity to ensure it is ready for the public, with an opening date of May 7 expected.

The Splash Pad, which first opened in 2019, is a popular recreational attraction in the Hays community, featuring 27 interactive play elements that provide cooling relief and entertainment for residents of all ages.

The facility offers a range of nozzles and jets designed to spray, mist, and shower water, creating an engaging and fun water-play experience.

Jeff Boyle, director of parks for the City of Hays, emphasized the importance of annual maintenance in providing safe and enjoyable experiences for the community.

“The Splash Pad has become one of our most visited summer attractions,” Boyle said. “We’re committed to ensuring it remains in excellent condition, not only for safety reasons but also so visitors have the best possible experience when they visit.”

Maintenance efforts include checking plumbing and filtration systems, ensuring water pumps and control panels operate efficiently, and inspecting nozzles and spray jets for any necessary replacements or repairs.

The comprehensive assessment helps extend the life of the facility and guarantees optimal performance throughout the busy summer months.

Once open the Splash Pad will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, Boyle noted operational hours may vary due to weather conditions or unforeseen maintenance needs.

“We monitor the weather closely throughout the summer to keep our facilities operating smoothly,” Boyle said. “In cases of severe weather, such as lightning or heavy storms, the Splash Pad may temporarily close for public safety.”

Seven Hills Park is also home to the ARC Accessible Playground, a complementary attraction designed for children of all ages and abilities.

The playground features a large, farm-themed play structure and includes various freestanding sensory and motion-play opportunities.

Boyle said the combination of the Splash Pad and ARC Playground makes Seven Hills Park a vibrant and inclusive destination for Hays families.

“The park provides a great environment for children and families to enjoy outdoor play,” Boyle said. “Having accessible amenities like the ARC Playground and the Splash Pad at the same location gives families opportunities for diverse activities without having to travel far.”

Boyle encouraged all park visitors to follow posted rules, including refraining from bringing pets, alcohol, or glass containers into the fenced playground and Splash Pad areas.

Skateboards, bikes, scooters, skates, cleats, and high-heeled shoes are also prohibited to protect the equipment and ensure safety for all users.

“We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping maintain a safe and clean environment for everyone,” Boyle said. “We remind visitors that adult supervision is strongly recommended when children are using playground or Splash Pad facilities.”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the past few years have been extremely difficult to navigate. 

It has never been more important to talk about stress and mental strain each one of us may be experiencing. Sustained higher levels of stress can lead to depression, anxiety, fatigue, and other triggers that cause a greater propensity for attempting suicide. The stigma of mental health can also make it difficult for people to feel that they can reach out for support. 

There are a number of helpful sources available for people in need and I will highlight those today.

The National Suicide helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling or texting “988”. Support services are confidential and free of charge. This helpline is now a streamlined version of the suicide hotline and involves the ability to call and talk with someone, or text the number and use the text version if you do not want to talk.

In the Great Bend area, the Center for Counseling and Consultation can be reached on their confidential crisis line 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 800-875-2544 or 620-792-2544 as well as at their website&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://thecentergb.org/">https://thecentergb.org</a>.

Three-day weather outlook

The first half of the 20th&nbsp;century marked the beginning of a rich tradition of Kansas politicians.&nbsp;&nbsp;

First, Charles Curtis. &nbsp;Born in Topeka, Curtis made history as the first Native American to serve in the U.S. Congress as House member and Senator.&nbsp; He would rise to Senate Majority Leader and then to Vice President under Herbert Hoover in 1928.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Second, &nbsp;Alf Landon.&nbsp; As a young man, Landon moved to the sunflower state to attend the University of Kansas.&nbsp; He went on to become Kansas’s 26th&nbsp;governor in 1932 and then Republican nominee for president in 1936.&nbsp;

Third, Dwight Eisenhower.&nbsp; Eisenhower was raised in Abilene and graduated from West Point.&nbsp; During WW II, he rose to Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces and a five-star Army General.&nbsp; &nbsp;Eisenhower then entered the 1952 presidential race and beat Democrat Adlai Stevenson in a landslide.&nbsp;Four years later, he defeated Stevenson once more and enjoyed extraordinary public approval during his two terms.&nbsp; Scholars typically&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_presidents_of_the_United_States">rank</a>&nbsp;Eisenhower among the best presidents.

This trio possessed extraordinary talent and ambition, and their formative experiences in Kansas set the foundation to ascend to national prominence.&nbsp;Their careers were notably long, marked by continuous development and personal growth, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

At the time of his inauguration, Curtis was the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://wiki-gateway.eudic.net/wikipedia_en/List_of_Vice_Presidents_of_the_United_States_by_age.html">oldest</a>&nbsp;vice president. Likewise, at the start of his first term Eisenhower, at almost 63, was the 4th&nbsp;oldest president. &nbsp;Landon, too, remained active in state and national politics his entire life, addressing the Republican National Convention in Kansas City at age 89.&nbsp;And it was at that 1976 Convention the next great Kansas politician emerged on the national stage.&nbsp; Senator Bob Dole was nominated as Gerald Ford’s vice-presidential candidate.

Like Curtis, Dole served in both chambers, capping his legislative career as Republican Leader of the Senate and Senate Majority Leader.&nbsp; Later he won the Republican presidential nomination in 1996.&nbsp;

Now, nearly three decades after Dole’s bid for the presidency, it seems the Kansas tradition has come to an end.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kansans have certainly made their mark since then, but not on the nation’s most important political stage.

To reach that level requires persistence, impeccable timing, and the ability to identify and leverage emerging trends.&nbsp; &nbsp;Today, we are experiencing considerable uncertainty.&nbsp;

There is a growing antipathy toward both political parties.&nbsp; 

More people are identifying as Independents, and party coalitions are shifting in unpredictable ways.&nbsp; And layered beneath these changes looms a profound distrust of nearly every major institution.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The presidency, the House, and the Senate constantly ping-pong back and forth between the two parties.&nbsp; One party holds power only to lose it in the next election cycle. 

The volatility reflects public dissatisfaction and a deep yearning for something new.&nbsp; &nbsp;The established pathways of prior generations are fading away.&nbsp;

The 2024 election revealed the Bush-Cheney faction no longer matters, and the Obama-Biden coalition has fallen apart.&nbsp;&nbsp;The pages are empty.&nbsp;Now is the moment for a new generation of Kansans to revitalize the tradition and write their own story.&nbsp;

Who will be the next great Kansas politician?&nbsp; &nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: Great Kansas politicians

Families have reported thefts from two graves at the Munjor Cemetery.

Chelsea Dickey, a Munjor resident, said several items were stolen from her son Colton's grave before Easter. The family has yet to purchase a headstone, and Colton's marker was taken out of the ground.

The thief or thieves also took solar lights, a cross, a cardinal, decorative initials, a Christmas tree, and memorial stones left by friends and family.

"They totally came out there and cleaned house," Dickey said.

Another family whose loved one is buried at the cemetery had their father's rosary and a limestone rock stolen from a grave.

Ellis County Commissioner Neal Younger helps do maintenance at the cemetery and said the items had not been disturbed during maintenance.

The thefts were reported to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.

Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun said Monday the case is under investigation. The two graves are the only ones he knew to be affected. Braun said officers believe juveniles might have been involved in the thefts.

The family has yet to purchase a headstone, and Colton's marker was taken out of the ground.The thief or thieves also took solar lights, a cross, a cardinal, decorative initials, a Christmas tree, and memorial stones left by friends and family."They totally came out there and cleaned house," Dickey said.Another family whose loved one is buried at the cemetery had their father's rosary and a limestone rock stolen from a grave.Ellis County Commissioner Neal Younger helps do maintenance at the cemetery and said the items had not been disturbed during maintenance.The thefts were reported to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun said Monday the case is under investigation. The Ellis County Commission will make a motion on a preliminary plat for Fairview Patch Addition&nbsp;during its meeting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The application includes plans for 13 residential parcels near 400th Avenue and Severin Road. Ten parcels will measure 3 acres each, one about 3.1 acres, and two larger parcels around 4.5 and 4.7 acres.

The land is zoned agricultural but is being used for residential purposes. The Ellis County Planning Commission has already approved the preliminary plat.

Environmental Services Director Justin Craig and James Meis, survey manager with Driggs Design Group, will give the presentation.

Ellis County staff will request approval to allocate special alcohol funds to the Ellis County Historical Society for 2025.

Because of Ellis County's size, the funds are split into three categories: general use, parks and recreation, and alcohol and drug programs. Since there are no county parks, the parks portion is usually allocated to the Ellis County Historical Society each year.

Historical Society Executive Director Amanda Rupp submitted a formal request letter. County Administrator Darin Myers will lead the discussion.

The Ellis County Health Department is seeking approval to close its office from May 21 to May 22 so staff can attend the Kansas Immunization Conference in Wichita.

The conference will offer essential training and reinforce best practices for immunization and outbreak response, especially in response to the current measles outbreak.

Ellis County Health Director Melissa Miller will speak to the commissioners.

Ellis County EMS is requesting approval to accept a grant to help pay for two new defibrillator monitors. The total purchase cost is about $73,000, with the grant covering about $18,000.

Ellis County staff is requesting permission to close the Administrative Building at a later date to allow the installation of emergency generator transfer switch equipment.&nbsp;

For the first time in Hays, the Kansas Science Festival sparked curiosity among children, turning downtown into a living lab of real-world science.

The festival was held on Sunday on Main Street and was filled with hands-on STEM activities. Organizer Dallas Haselhorst said it was the event's first outside of Manhattan.

"Science and STEM are really involved in everything. This was to show kids that there's a lot of different science and engineering-inspired technology," Haselhorst said.

With interactive booths and opportunities to meet researchers from across Kansas, the event aimed to highlight the importance of science in everyday life.

The festival featured four activity sites along Main Street, where about 25 presenters showcased various scientific fields to attendees.

Stacy Campbell, agent with the Cottonwood District, used a model aquifer at the festival to help children understand how underground water systems function.

Using food coloring and tubing, he demonstrated how water and pollutants travel through soil layers, providing a simple visual for kids.

"Even when I was a kid, I lived where the aquifer was... I always thought it was this big underground cavern where water was, but it's really in the soil. All these different layers can hold the water," Campbell said.

Several activities were held under the Hays Outdoor Pavilion, including a roped-off area where elephant toothpaste would erupt from a tube, requiring science goggles.

Arvin Cruz, chair of the Fort Hays State University Chemistry Department, supervised the FHSU Chemistry Club as they demonstrated experiments such as liquid nitrogen, disappearing styrofoam and burning cloth.

Cruz also emphasized the importance of making science approachable to kids and families rather than just experts, hoping similar events will encourage others to explore careers in science.

"Someday we'll be gone from Earth, and we'll need a new generation of scientists," Cruz said.&nbsp;

Activities spanned from the Hays Public Library to STEM Harvest on the south end of Main Street, where children could learn from researchers, examine artifacts and interact with animals.

Haselhorst said Hays was selected for the Kansas Science Festival due to its strong educational foundation, including Fort Hays State University and STEM Harvest.

He said that if the event is successful, Hays could become a model for bringing the festival to other rural communities across the state.

"Maybe in the future, aside from just those four locations, we line up Main Street with different presenters, tables and organizations showing what they do in the form of STEM," Haslehorst said.

Children also learned from the FHSU Robotics Team, the university’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute, the Sternberg Museum and the Hays Fire Department. They also had the chance to view the sun safely through telescopes and enjoy face painting.

Kansas Science Festival makes STEM fun for Hays children

Hays Middle School Performing Arts

Hays Middle School Performing Arts students will present a joint stage and vocal music performance at the Hays Community Theatre on Thursday, May 8, followed by a stage performance only on Sunday, May 11.

On May 8, the HMS Falcon Singers will open the performance at 7 p.m. with about 25 minutes of vocal music, followed by the one-act play, “Gossip,” presented by drama students. On Sunday, no vocal music will be presented, only the play at 2 p.m.

“I’m pleased that the vocal students will join us for the Thursday performance,” said play director Bill Gasper. “It makes for a little longer evening of entertainment for parents and friends. It was decided to do the Sunday performance of the play because of family members wanting to attend from out-of-town.”

The Falcon Singers, under the direction of Michael Davidson, will perform four or five songs. That will be followed by several solo and small group numbers for a total performance time of 25 minutes.

“This is a talented and dedicated group of singers who practice with me early before school each week,” Davidson said.

Members of the Falcon Singers are Isabel Enriquez Carrasco, Kennedy Smith, Sarah Niehaus, Isabella Anderson, Addison Booze, Annelise Buller, Kenzie Wolcott, Briggston Anderson, Elaina Bach, Evie Dietz, Ryker Barrett, Rachel Dees, Nadia Hernandez, Kahner McGuire, and Reese Custer.

“Gossip” is an award-winning play by Brian Hampton that spins a cautionary tale about the negative effects of gossip.

The 35-minute show personifies Gossip as a new student with a charismatic yet cunning personality. Gossip quickly befriends one of the popular girls, Dallas, but it’s soon revealed that Gossip has entered the friendship with sinister intentions, aiming to take Dallas’ place in the school play and get closer to her boyfriend, Tim.

As Gossip weaves a web of lies and deception, twisting the truth to get what she wants, the group of friends she’s infiltrated begins to unravel until they eventually learn of Gossip’s ulterior motives and turn on her in a dramatic twist.

“It shows how the rest of the kids deal with gossip and eventually learn that gossip is not a very good thing to spread or to believe all the time,” Gasper said.

The play features 10 students, including Isabella Anderson, Jackson Berges, Addison Booze, Annelise Buller, Kalliape Butler, Braelyn Dumler, Zach Leiker, Korbin Miller,

Savannah Wittkorn and Kenzie Wolcott. Helping with the production is assistant director Emily Buller.

No admission will be charged for the performance and everyone is invited. Hays Community Theatre is located at 121 E. 8th Street.

“I want to thank Hays Community Theatre for its generosity in allowing us to use their performance space,” Gasper said.

 </figure>Hays Middle School Performing ArtsHays Middle School Performing Arts students will present a joint stage and vocal music performance at the Hays Community Theatre on Thursday, May 8, followed by a stage performance only on Sunday, May 11.On May 8, the HMS Falcon Singers will open the performance at 7 p.m. with about 25 minutes of vocal music, followed by the one-act play, “Gossip,” presented by drama students. On Sunday, no vocal music will be presented, only the play at 2 p.m.“I’m pleased that the vocal students will join us for the Thursday performance,” said play director Bill Gasper. “It makes for a little longer evening of entertainment for parents and friends. It was decided to do the Sunday performance of the play because of family members wanting to attend from out-of-town.”The Falcon Singers, under the direction of Michael Davidson, will perform four or five songs. That will be followed by several solo and small group numbers for a total performance time of 25 minutes.“This is a talented and dedicated group of singers who practice with me early before school each week,” Davidson said.Members of the Falcon Singers are Isabel Enriquez Carrasco, Kennedy Smith, Sarah Niehaus, Isabella Anderson, Addison Booze, Annelise Buller, Kenzie Wolcott, Briggston Anderson, Elaina Bach, Evie Dietz, Ryker Barrett, Rachel Dees, Nadia Hernandez, Kahner McGuire, and Reese Custer.“Gossip” is an award-winning play by Brian Hampton that spins a cautionary tale about the negative effects of gossip.The 35-minute show personifies Gossip as a new student with a charismatic yet cunning personality. Gossip quickly befriends one of the popular girls, Dallas, but it’s soon revealed that Gossip has entered the friendship with sinister intentions, aiming to take Dallas’ place in the school play and get closer to her boyfriend, Tim.As Gossip weaves a web of lies and deception, twisting the truth to get what she wants, the group of friends she’s infiltrated begins to unravel until they eventually learn of Gossip’s ulterior motives and turn on her in a dramatic twist.“It shows how the rest of the kids deal with gossip and eventually learn that gossip is not a very good thing to spread or to believe all the time,” Gasper said.The play features 10 students, including Isabella Anderson, Jackson Berges, Addison Booze, Annelise Buller, Kalliape Butler, Braelyn Dumler, Zach Leiker, Korbin Miller,Savannah Wittkorn and Kenzie Wolcott. Helping with the production is assistant director Emily Buller.No admission will be charged for the performance and everyone is invited. Hays Community Theatre is located at 121 E. 8th Street.“I want to thank Hays Community Theatre for its generosity in allowing us to use their performance space,” Gasper said.

The Heartland Community Foundation is excited to announce that applications are&nbsp;now open for the 2025-26 Youth Action Council (YAC), a leadership and enrichment program for&nbsp;high school students in Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties.

&nbsp;The YAC program aims to empower young&nbsp;people to be involved in community decision-making, cultivate a spirit of philanthropy, and instill a

Since December 2020, Heartland has granted over $100,000 to teen-led projects, and we want to&nbsp;continue supporting their efforts and empowering them to do even more. YAC members will have&nbsp;the opportunity to learn about generosity in a practical way by being generous and developing&nbsp;community projects.

There were 43 YAC members on the 2024-25 council from all eight high schools in Ellis, Rooks, and&nbsp;Trego counties.

&nbsp;Each county worked on a communitywide project. Those projects are ongoing and have provided exciting and important learning opportunities for members. Members also had the opportunity to review Heartland grant applications during the fall cycle. They completed a community service project in January, assembling 200 “birthday bags” to distribute to area food banks, providing all of the fixings needed to celebrate a birthday. 

Topics discussed each month have included leadership, fundraising, marketing, grant writing, and more. Members from 2024-25 council who have not graduated will be part of the 2025-26 council. Those who are graduating become part of a growing network of Youth Action Council alums.

“Joining YAC has allowed me to connect with students from other schools, creating a community where I can share ideas, tackle community projects and build friendships while being taught about the grant process. said Mia Coleman, a senior at Trego Community High School. Marlie Dobson, a senior at Plainville High School, added,&nbsp; “Being a part of YAC has brought me the best opportunities. My leadership and communication skills have grown tremendously in the last two years. I wrote&nbsp;and was awarded a grant to benefit my school. I love that I am able to help better my school and community.”

YAC meetings are held once a month during the school day for about an hour, rotating locations&nbsp;among individual high schools within each county. Twice a year, in August and January, the full&nbsp;council from throughout the Heartland area will come together to meet in a larger group in Hays.

The group will also be tasked with developing and volunteering for a service project.

In selecting new members, the Heartland Youth Action Council is looking for teens who:

● Care about their community and want to make a difference

● Are open-minded, critical thinkers who can discuss tough issues and creative solutions

● Demonstrate integrity and initiative in their actions and decisions

● Will be in 10th or 11th grade during the 2025-26 academic school year. 12th graders must be returning members.

● Reside in Ellis, Rooks, or Trego counties.

The expectations of Youth Action Council members are as follows:

● Attend a Youth Action Council orientation in Hays during early August.

● Attend a monthly meeting during the school day in your home county in September,&nbsp;October, November, February, March and April by zoom or in person.

● Attend a Youth Action Council retreat in Hays in January.

● Actively participate in discussions and activities.

● Be an advocate for the Youth Action Council, the Heartland Community Foundation, and the&nbsp;youth in our community.

In observance of Older American’s Month, Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging (NWKAAA) will be hosting its annual “Information Day” for older Kansans and caregivers on Wednesday, May 7.&nbsp;The theme this year is “Flip the Script on Aging.”

&nbsp;This event will be held at Big Creek Crossing (The Mall), 2918 Vine Street, Hays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with bingo from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m. 

The day will include speakers, hands-on activities, vendor booths, door prizes and lots of giveaways. Enjoy complimentary coffee, donuts, hot dogs, chips, bottled water, and snacks while supplies last.

Something wicked this way comes—and it’s not what you think.

On Saturday, May 17, downtown Russell is flipping the script on small-town weekends with the debut of Wicked Fest—a full day of fun, races, live music, and activities for the whole family.

Think small-town charm meets festival vibes, all wrapped up in one action-packed day you won’t want to miss.

Born from a collaboration between the Wicked Wilson Gravel Race, Russell Main Street, Inc., and Russell County Leadership, Wicked Fest is all about one thing: bringing life, energy, and visitors to the heart of downtown. It’s more than a good time (though it’s definitely that, too)—it’s a celebration of local businesses, community pride, and the people who make this town move.

One of the most anticipated parts of the day is the Wicked Wilson Gravel Race, expected to draw around 100 cyclists to downtown Russell. Just west on I-70 from the gravel-famous Flint Hills lies a hidden gem—perhaps the best-kept secret in Midwest Gravel—the beautiful Smoky Hills of Russell County. These fast-rolling roads offer a challenge that won’t chew up your tires, with steep, relentless hills and stunning views waiting at nearly every summit. Riders will take on four “Ruler of the Mountain” climbs and experience a course full of diverse, engaging terrain from beginning to end. The 100k race will take off from downtown at 7:30 AM, followed by the 50k race at 8:30 AM. Registration is $99 for the 100k and $79 for the 50k. Expect wicked-fun aid stations, DNF wagons if needed, and a true grassroots race experience led by directors who care about building an unforgettable event. Riders will cross the finish line in the heart of downtown Russell—just in time to join the festival. The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the 5K Suds Run and Kids’ Bike Race. If you’re picturing a traditional 5K, think again. In the Suds Run, racers stop for a drink before each lap—yes, an actual drink—before heading back down the path.

It’s part race, part party, and fully unforgettable. Every participant walks away with a commemorative T-shirt and serious bragging rights.

At the same time, Main Street comes alive with local vendors, food trucks, and craft booths, open through 3 p.m. Families will love the Kids’ Activity Zone, running from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., complete with chalk art, crafts, games, a sand pit and a Touch a Truck experience.

For the adults, the beer garden opens bright and early at 9 a.m. in front of Chet’s Place, operated by Waudby’s Bar and Grill. You’ll also find Dry Lake Brewing Co. and Liquor Station serving up adult slushies and craft brews from their popups.

It’s the perfect place to cool off, catch up, and take in the downtown buzz.

At noon, the spotlight shifts to the live music stage, where Sam Shilts will bring the beats to Main Street. Then at 1:30 p.m., it’s game time with a cornhole tournament—a favorite for spectators and players alike.
