When this outdoor column was born some twenty years ago, I swore it would always and only be about the outdoors; on rare occasions an outdoor topic or adventure from another state, but the outdoors non-the-less. My wife has often suggested I venture into other genres, but I have resisted. But now I find myself feeling the need to say some things that will deviate from the outdoors, and hoping that after almost twenty years, you readers will allow me this detour.

First and foremost, as a country and as a people we need God back in our lives. We have succeeded in pushing God out of our homes, our schools, our government and I fear He is barely welcome in some churches anymore. Now, don’t read into this more than I intend. I’m not blaming all the division and complete lack of common sense seen in our country today on God, suggesting He brought it on us or is allowing it to happen, although I believe that is a distinct possibility. What I am suggesting is that the only way for us as a nation to conquer all this turmoil is through a personal relationship with Jesus and by allowing God to be the God of the USA again. And by the way, without God there would be NO Kansas Outdoors to write about.

Secondly, we as a nation must regain a respect for authority. I see a tremendous lack of respect in our country for authority figures, parents, school teachers, coaches, work supervisors, law enforcement officers and even government officials and our president. Now I can hear the argument already “if those in authority respect me, I’ll respect them.” No, that’s not how this works. You can use that excuse with your siblings, your coworkers and maybe your friends, but not with those in authority over you. Yes, it’s wonderful to have authority figures who are kind, respectable themselves and also give us respect, but those in authority over us are due our respect even if it’s only for the position. Being a person of authority is not a popularity contest, nor are they there to be our best friend.

Thirdly, we as a people need to begin making decisions and forming opinions based on common sense, facts, science and the Bible. Today in our world, far too many decisions are made and opinions formed based on emotions alone. For example, I never dreamed I would see in my lifetime, not only support but actual promotion of the thinking that genders can be changed. Yes, there is a place for

emotions in the process of forming opinions, but factual information needs to be the driving force. Today’s media plays on our emotions and makes it terribly hard to stick to the facts. I can hardly stand to watch the commercials showing dogs that are skin and bones anchored to a tree with a log chain in a snowstorm. But the fact is that it’s EXTREMELY rare to find dogs like that; the vast majority of dogs in our nation are treated as well or better than some humans. But those pictures make the viewer tear-up and reach for their wallet to contribute to their cause. These tactics are used by organizations in all walks of life to get us to throw facts to the wind and go full-tilt ahead based on our emotions alone.

I don’t mean to make this all sound oversimplistic, and while changing the latter two would have a profound effect on the attitudes, demeaners and common-sense mindsets of us as United States citizens, it would probably do little to cease the wildfires or calm the hurricanes. But renewing or establishing a personal relationship with Jesus and making God the God of the USA again, will humble us before Him and invite Him to heal our land. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: In my humble opinion

Three little girls circled Kelly Groff on Wednesday, eagerly coloring Thanksgiving turkeys.

She spoke to them calmly with love and patience as they asked questions and showed off their multi-color squiggles.

For 24 years, Groff has cared for children in Hays. She has started caring for her three daughters, and now her in-home child care includes two of her grandchildren.

Groff, 43, of Hays was nominated as the November Child Care Champion by&nbsp;Michelle Wiesner.

"She has been a loving and caring provider for over 20 years,"&nbsp;Wiesner said. "She loves every child she has cared for, loves finding new crafts and creating new experiences for the kids. She loves what she does."

Kari Groff also nominated Kelly, saying, "She takes the extra step to make the kiddos feel at home."

Kelly Groff said, "I just love being with all of the kids. I don't know anything else, really. I love being with them. They love being with me."

Groff loves holidays and engages the children in craft activities that focus on giving back to the community.

The children and their families will give to the Toys for Tots program. The children also help Groff make cookies during the holidays. The plate of cookies is gifted to a family, who is encouraged also to make cookies and pass them on to someone else.

"We always say it's not what's under the tree, but who's around the tree," Groff said.

Groff said the children and families look forward to all of their giving experiences.

She talks with the children about what they are thankful for every morning through November.

"My philosophy is to be kind and humble," she said.

The Groffs love Halloween, and not only do the children who are currently in her child care come trick or treating, but so do children who she has cared for in the past.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the family's 13-foot skeleton still loomed in the yard across from blow-up Christmas decorations already greeting the kids for the next holiday.

Groff said she stays close to many of the children in her child care in the past, some of whom are now teenagers or even in college.

"It's so great to see how well they are doing in life," she said.

When the weather is nicer, Groff likes to take the children for walks and allows them to play outside.

"Every child needs to be outside," she said. "That is what I preach the most is every child needs fresh air. Every child needs to burn energy."

Groff said one of the most challenging aspects of her job is raising the children from babies and then letting them go when they start school.

"You raise them for four years, and then they're gone," she said.

She said she has also seen challenges in the increasing number of regulations in-home child care providers face and decreasing demand for in-home child care as more child care centers open in the area.

Groff said patience is the key for anyone wanting to enter the child care profession. She said each child is different, and you never know what you're going to get.

"For me, it just comes naturally," she said. " I have always loved kids. I have always loved being around kids. I've always loved doing activities with kids. You have to have the knack for it, I guess.

"It definitely takes time and patience, and it's a learning experience."

The Chamber in Hays, Kansas, announces new health insurance option for 2025

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/akaminski/"></a>TOPEKA — A lizard, a turtle and a fish are prospering in Kansas after spending years on the state’s threatened list.

A Nov. 21 proposal to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission recommended downgrading the classifications of the broadhead skink, the northern map turtle and the shoal chub from threatened to “species in need of conservation.” Researchers across the state have discovered significant increases in the three species’ known populations.

Jordan Hofmeier, ecological services director for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, said habitat conservation is the largest difference between the two classifications.

Under the needs conservation classification, the three species’ habitats no longer would be conserved, but they would remain protected from capture.

“If we have species on our list that are doing much better than they previously were, we don’t need to spend as much effort in conserving those as we do with some of the other species that are doing much more poorly,” Hofmeier said at a Nov. 21 commission meeting. “It’s a way that we can prioritize our efforts so we can focus on the species that need it the most.”

The three species are “success stories,” Hofmeier said at an Oct. 3 commission meeting. That’s because of strides in documentation and discovery.

The population increases among each species are largely because of more thorough research. Expanded survey areas, greater consideration for habitat diversity and new methods allowed surveyors and experts to better understand the species, according to the proposal, which comes after more than a year of preparation.

<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/BROADHEAD-SKINK" target="_blank">Broadhead skinks</a>&nbsp;are smooth and scaly lizards with yellow stripes along their heads and backs. They have been threatened since 1987 and are mostly found in the southwesternmost part of Kansas. They are fond of trees, especially mature oak, and recent studies have shown they also create habitats among dead logs and fallen trees.

At the time of the broadhead skink’s threatened classification, there were only 15 known lizards. In 2015, researchers had identified 55, and by 2023 they had identified roughly 400.

<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/NORTHERN-MAP-TURTLE" target="_blank">Northern map turtles</a>&nbsp;have short tails, rigid shells and small yellow dots behind each eye. They like to bask in the slow currents of creeks, rivers and lakes, especially in the creeks of eastern Kansas south of the Kansas River and east of the Flint Hills.

The species was listed as threatened in 1993. At that time, surveyors found only 10 turtles using netting traps, but northern map turtles, among other species, have a reputation for acting wary of net traps. According to the wildlife and parks department, “Emporia State University researchers documented 100 individuals from 2017-2019,” using a combination of traps and telescopes.

<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/SHOAL-CHUB" target="_blank">Shoal chubs</a>&nbsp;are small, silver and black-speckled minnows with brief lifespans. On average, they grow to be no more than three inches and live less than a year. Once considered rare, shoal chubs like to live and spawn in larger rivers, including the Kansas and lower Republican rivers. They were classified as threatened in 2009 when surveyors identified about 1,000 shoal chubs.

State survey crews recently found more than 7,000 shoal chubs.

Endangered is the most at-risk classification under the Kansas Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1975. Species also can be classified under the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Federal-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-in-Kansas" target="_blank">federal</a>&nbsp;Endangered Species Act of 1973. Twenty-two animal species are on the state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Kansas-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-Statewide" target="_blank">list</a>. Most are fish or invertebrates like mussels and beetles.

Nearly 30 species are on the state threatened list, and more than 80 are on the list of species in need of conservation. Endangered and threatened species receive the same protections, including habitat conservation and capture prohibitions.

Warren Gfeller, a state wildlife and parks commissioner, wondered if the downlisting means the three species are at a heightened risk of becoming threatened again.

There’s always a potential, Hofmeier said, but the species won’t be ignored if reclassified.

“It gives us the ability to react a little bit better if they do become more imperiled in the future,” Hofmeier said. “But if we find that they’re continuing to do well, then they may get downlisted from species in need of conservation to totally unlisted.”

Three other Kansas species were considered and ultimately rejected for listing changes. They were the black-tailed prairie dog, the coal skink and the greater prairie chicken. All are currently unlisted.

Expanded survey areas, greater consideration for habitat diversity and new methods allowed surveyors and experts to better understand the species, according to the proposal, which comes after more than a year of preparation.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/BROADHEAD-SKINK" target="_blank">Broadhead skinks</a>&nbsp;are smooth and scaly lizards with yellow stripes along their heads and backs. They have been threatened since 1987 and are mostly found in the southwesternmost part of Kansas. They are fond of trees, especially mature oak, and recent studies have shown they also create habitats among dead logs and fallen trees.At the time of the broadhead skink’s threatened classification, there were only 15 known lizards. In 2015, researchers had identified 55, and by 2023 they had identified roughly 400.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/NORTHERN-MAP-TURTLE" target="_blank">Northern map turtles</a>&nbsp;have short tails, rigid shells and small yellow dots behind each eye. They like to bask in the slow currents of creeks, rivers and lakes, especially in the creeks of eastern Kansas south of the Kansas River and east of the Flint Hills.The species was listed as threatened in 1993. At that time, surveyors found only 10 turtles using netting traps, but northern map turtles, among other species, have a reputation for acting wary of net traps. According to the wildlife and parks department, “Emporia State University researchers documented 100 individuals from 2017-2019,” using a combination of traps and telescopes.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/SHOAL-CHUB" target="_blank">Shoal chubs</a>&nbsp;are small, silver and black-speckled minnows with brief lifespans. On average, they grow to be no more than three inches and live less than a year. Once considered rare, shoal chubs like to live and spawn in larger rivers, including the Kansas and lower Republican rivers. They were classified as threatened in 2009 when surveyors identified about 1,000 shoal chubs.State survey crews recently found more than 7,000 shoal chubs.Endangered is the most at-risk classification under the Kansas Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1975. Species also can be classified under the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Federal-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-in-Kansas" target="_blank">federal</a>&nbsp;Endangered Species Act of 1973. Twenty-two animal species are on the state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Kansas-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-Statewide" target="_blank">list</a>. Most are fish or invertebrates like mussels and beetles.Nearly 30 species are on the state threatened list, and more than 80 are on the list of species in need of conservation. Endangered and threatened species receive the same protections, including habitat conservation and capture prohibitions.Warren Gfeller, a state wildlife and parks commissioner, wondered if the downlisting means the three species are at a heightened risk of becoming threatened again.There’s always a potential, Hofmeier said, but the species won’t be ignored if reclassified.“It gives us the ability to react a little bit better if they do become more imperiled in the future,” Hofmeier said. “But if we find that they’re continuing to do well, then they may get downlisted from species in need of conservation to totally unlisted.”Three other Kansas species were considered and ultimately rejected for listing changes. They were the black-tailed prairie dog, the coal skink and the greater prairie chicken. All are currently unlisted.

Research fills gaps for Kansas threatened species ‘success stories’

Throughout 2024 parts of Kansas have been in abnormally dry or drought conditions. Some places, like those that use Cheney Reservoir west of Wichita as a water source, have even had water conservation restrictions in place for several months.

Changes in rainfall have been commonplace for the past few years. This rainfall is distributed unevenly across the state. Some places are going from very dry to getting the expected monthly rain total in a single day. These changes don’t necessarily show up in long-term averages but have a significant effect on agricultural production and infrastructure-disruptive flooding.

The historic trend of widespread droughts can also lead to increased food prices and according to research from Harvard University, such droughts are likely to continue into the future.

These trends prompted the Docking Institute at Fort Hays State University to add water conservation questions to their annual Kansas Speaks public opinion survey this year.

The survey asked respondents whether local and state governments across the state were addressing water conservation efforts satisfactorily.

33.4% of respondents felt that their local government was not doing enough for water conservation in their part of Kansas. Nearly 40% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 2.4% felt it was doing too much.

Nearly 37% of respondents felt the state government was not doing enough, nearly 34% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 3.2% said it was doing too much.

Respondents were nearly evenly split on whether or not voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.6%) is sufficient for improving water conservation efforts across the state or whether local governments should pass new laws (35.7%). Similar results appeared for voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.5%) versus new laws from the state government (34.1%).

About 30% of respondents had no opinion for both questions.

Nearly a majority (49.6%) of Kansans report being very or moderately concerned that the state might be running out of water. An additional 27.7% report being slightly concerned.

Kansas lawmakers face a pivotal choice about the future of water conservation in the state.

The data from the Kansas Speaks survey reflects a growing public awareness of the challenges posed by shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and unequal water availability. With nearly half of Kansans expressing significant concern about the state’s water resources, it’s clear that inaction is not an option.

The question now is whether state and local leaders will take proactive steps to address these concerns through targeted policies and investments or leave the responsibility to voluntary efforts by individuals and businesses.

As extreme weather events and historic drought trends continue to strain Kansas's water systems, the decisions made today will determine whether the state can secure its water future and support its agricultural backbone for generations to come.

EMPORIA - Hays High took the field in their first ever football championship on Saturday night. The Indians faced the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints in Emporia at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.

The Saints never trailed in a 35-13 victory over Hays.

The Indians' opponents in 2024 had a collective record of 100-38.

Aquinas(13-0) scored on plays of 41, 23 and 36 yards in the first half to build a 21-0 lead. Hays(8-5) got into the Saints' territory twice but couldn't keep their drive going. Hays punted on four of their five drives in the first half and lost the ball on downs on the other.

Hays took the opening drive of the game as far as the 30 yard line of Aquinas. The Indians lost 13 yards on the next play to set up an eventual punt. Aquinas punted on their first drive but Hays gave the ball back on a punt three plays later.

A short punt set up the Saints at the Hays 41 yard line and on the first play of the drive Elzie Slaughter found Brett Yankovich for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

It was the first of three straight possessions that Aquinas scored. It looked like the Indians stuffed a third down and six play but Calin Arndt broke free of the tackle and gained 45 yards. He scored two plays later on a 23 yard run pushing the advantage to 14-0.

Slaughter completed the trifecta of touchdowns with a 36 yard run after the Indians turned the ball over on downs on a 4th and 2 play. The Saints nearly scored before half but a pass was broken up near the end zone as time expired leaving Aquinas with a 21-0 lead in the locker room.

The Indians scored the first points of the second half. Neither team scored in the third quarter as the teams traded punts. An early fourth quarter punt was blocked by Hays. One play later Ian McGuire found Holden Lind wide open for a 25 yard yard scoring pass. Carson Moore nailed the point after for a 21-7 score with 11:08 left in the game.

The Indians forced a fumble on the next drive deep in their own territory. However, Hays couldn't move the ball and turned the ball over on an interception. Aquinas scored on their next two possession, establishing a 35-14 lead with 3:42 remaining.

The Indians took their final possession 76 yards on ten plays and scored as the final seconds dripped off the clock. McGuire found Johnny Cano for his 41 reception of the season, a 17 yard touchdown. The clocked had expired leaving the final score at 35-13.

Hays ran the ball for 110 yards, 40 more than the Saints defense gave up on average. The Indians totaled 190 in the game. Aquinas ran for 289 yards and threw for 83 more.

Pay it forward to FHSU students this Giving Tuesday

The Hays High Indians are set to make their first-ever appearance in the KSHSAA Football State Championship game. They will face St. Thomas Aquinas at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the 5A crown.

Hays (8-4) has been on the road for every postseason game. This weekend's trip to Emporia marks their fifth consecutive road game. As the nine seed in 5A West, Hays has traveled to Andover, Great Bend, Hutchinson and Goddard to play Eisenhower. The Indians were the lower seed in all five contests.

Hays has been on the road for eight of their last 10 games.

St. Thomas Aquinas (12-0) is the No. 1 seed out of 5A East. The Saints have won their last three games by margins of 14, 1 and 7 points. They won the 4A state championship a season ago.

Victoria native Randy Dreiling coaches Aquinas. He has won nine state championships, two with his current school and seven at Hutchinson. The nine titles are tied with Ed Kriwiel for most in Kansas history.

LOGAN -&nbsp;The Hansen Museum is honored to be chosen as the debut venue for the exhibition, Kansas from 400’ or Less. This exhibition features a collection of photographs by Thomas Zimmerman (formerly known as the Farmin’ Artist) that have never been seen by the public before. In preparation for this exhibition, Zimmerman has quietly worked over the past three years to accumulate these photographs while keeping his followers guessing about his activities.

Diving into a new arena, Thomas has taken his photography to new heights—literally—as the entire exhibition is shot using drones. Known for his stunning Kansas landscapes, Zimmerman recognized that employing a drone would provide perspectives unmatched by ground-based photography. Many Hansen Museum regular visitors will remember Zimmerman’s gorgeous Kansas skies from his first exhibition entitled the Farmin’ Artist exhibited at the Museum in late 2019.

In the world of art photography, perspective is everything, and drones offer a vantage point that transforms ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art. From the sky, Zimmerman captures landscapes in a way that ground-based photography simply cannot match. This unique viewpoint piques the eye and allows him to showcase the beauty of the world from angles that inspire wonder. New exhibition opening at Hansen Museum

Celebrate the season at the Hays Public Library! With themed programs and Frost Fest, the library has something coming up for all ages.

The first weekend of December will include both the Winter Art Walk and Frost Fest. The Winter Art Walk on Dec. 7 will feature a poetry reading put on by the FHSU Poet Laureate, Eileen Veatch. Also, the library will exhibit landscapes by Jan Williams.

On the same Saturday, join Santa for a come-and-go breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m., with a story at 10. Following the story, you can take a picture with Santa. Then get creative with seasonal crafts in the afternoon from 1 to 4. For the Frost Fest lighted parade on Sunday, Dec. 8, the library will reopen at 5:30 p.m. to serve hot chocolate. Community members are welcome to view the parade, which begins at 6 p.m., from inside the library.

Seasonal programs for adults will include a snowman craft on Dec. 5, How-To Series: Gift Wrapping on December 10th, and Holiday Cookie and Recipe Swap on December 16th.

Labels on non-refillable containers state, “Do not reuse or refill this container.” Some containers are refillable, and those labels typically say, “Refill this container with pesticide only. Do not reuse this container for any other purpose.” In some cases, the label may say, “Refill this container with [common chemical name]” or “This is a sealed, refillable container to be used only for [common chemical name],” which indicates that it can be refilled with the same pesticide by a retailer. These labeling statements make every pesticide container, from a 2.5-gallon jug up to a 30-gallon tote, illegal to reuse. Reusing containers for any other purpose is considered pesticide misuse and a violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. A pesticide container, even if it is empty or the label is removed (defaced), remains part of the pesticide product.

After use, pesticide containers should be disposed of properly. Disposal options may be limited by local regulations and ordinances. Containers that have been triple rinsed and crushed and/or punctured may be accepted by sanitary landfills or landfills that accept industrial waste. Check with your landfill operator prior to taking empty containers for disposal. Triple-rinsed containers can also be returned to the supplier. In addition, some counties in Kansas have a plastic pesticide container recycling program. Check with your county’s Environmental Office or Household Hazardous Waste program for more information.

Barby Ranch of Clark and Comanche counties has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award®.

The award honors farmers, ranchers, and forestland owners who go above and beyond in the management of soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat on working land.

Barby Ranch’s owners, Bill and Debbie Barby, were presented with the award at the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts’ Annual Convention. They receive $10,000 for being selected.

Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes farmers and forestland owners who inspire others with their dedication to environmental improvement.&nbsp;In his influential 1949 book,&nbsp;A Sand County Almanac, Leopold called for “a land ethic,” an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage.

Kansas landowners were encouraged to apply, or be nominated, for the award this year. Applications were reviewed by an independent panel of agricultural and conservation leaders from Kansas.

Barby Ranch’s remote location poses some challenges, including no permanent access roads and no utilities.

But that doesn’t deter Bill Barby. His passion for conservation and collaboration knows no bounds.

Through rotational grazing, prescribed burns, and removal of invasive trees, Bill has restored the ranch’s native habitats and ecological functions. Thousands of acres of healthier grassland and riparian areas provide habitat for imperiled species like the Lesser Prairie-Chicken, whooping crane, and Arkansas River shiner. Conservation partnerships have achieved improved water quality, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration on the landscape.&nbsp;

Bill says rotational grazing is the cornerstone of Barby Ranch’s revival. Decades ago, he and wife Debbie divided the ranch into two pastures, high ground in the sand hills, and lower ground along the Cimarron River that flows through the ranch. They later tapped into conservation program resources to finance cross fencing and water developments. Two pastures became nine before the ranch was further divided into 26 paddocks.

For grazing efficiency, the Barby’s cow-calf herd is moved through the paddocks as one group. Their movements are scheduled by a plan that provides grass rest and full recovery between grazings. This system has allowed the Barbys to profitably increase their stocking rate by 40 percent. Neighbors took notice of this successful strategy and adopted the same approach.

Rotational grazing encourages growth of deep-rooted grasses that can rebound quickly after drought or wildfire. This was put to the test when the entire ranch burned in 2017’s Starbuck wildfire, the largest in Kansas’ history.

Given the ranch’s remote, off-the-grid location in Clark and Comanche counties, solar energy powers water wells while gravity-flow pipelines supply watering tanks. Cameras monitor movement at the perimeter gates and water tank levels, and photos sent to cell phones cut costs by saving many miles of driving.

Bill undertook a mix of mechanical removal and prescribed burns to stop the encroachment of

Tamarisk and Eastern Red Cedar trees along the ranch’s productive and valuable river bottom corridor. Widespread tree cover was replaced with more than 200 varieties of native grasses, plants, and forbs. Strong populations of native fish and birds at Barby Ranch are indicators of clean water and healthy grasslands.

Bill also used prescribed fire to manage Sand Sagebrush on pastureland instead of broadcasting chemicals that would have killed nontargeted broadleaf vegetation. These beneficial plants can comprise more than 30 percent of cattle’s diet while benefitting pollinators and grassland birds.

Though not common practice in Kansas, Bill’s use of prescribed fire as a conservation tool has demonstrated a natural alternative to control tree infestation and prevent wildfires. A variety of landowners and conservation professionals have visited Barby Ranch to see its transformation and the innovative practices being used.

Bill’s conservation ethic has led him to serve in local and regional leadership roles, including the Cherokee Strip Prescribed Burn Association and the Lesser Prairie Landowner Alliance.

“The most successful and difficult thing I have done is to develop and implement a succession plan with a non-family heir,” Bill said of leasing his ranch.

Now in its third year, the tenant owns a percentage of the cattle and conducts day-to-day operation, while Bill oversees the land’s management.&nbsp;

At a time when the Great Plains’ grasslands are among the most threatened ecosystems in North America, and bird and pollinator populations are in decline, who better to mentor the next generation than Bill Barby.

His passion for conservation and collaboration knows no bounds.Through rotational grazing, prescribed burns, and removal of invasive trees, Bill has restored the ranch’s native habitats and ecological functions. Thousands of acres of healthier grassland and riparian areas provide habitat for imperiled species like the Lesser Prairie-Chicken, whooping crane, and Arkansas River shiner. Conservation partnerships have achieved improved water quality, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration on the landscape.&nbsp;Bill says rotational grazing is the cornerstone of Barby Ranch’s revival. Decades ago, he and wife Debbie divided the ranch into two pastures, high ground in the sand hills, and lower ground along the Cimarron River that flows through the ranch. They later tapped into conservation program resources to finance cross fencing and water developments. Two pastures became nine before the ranch was further divided into 26 paddocks.For grazing efficiency, the Barby’s cow-calf herd is moved through the paddocks as one group. Their movements are scheduled by a plan that provides grass rest and full recovery between grazings. This system has allowed the Barbys to profitably increase their stocking rate by 40 percent. Neighbors took notice of this successful strategy and adopted the same approach.Rotational grazing encourages growth of deep-rooted grasses that can rebound quickly after drought or wildfire. This was put to the test when the entire ranch burned in 2017’s Starbuck wildfire, the largest in Kansas’ history.Given the ranch’s remote, off-the-grid location in Clark and Comanche counties, solar energy powers water wells while gravity-flow pipelines supply watering tanks. Cameras monitor movement at the perimeter gates and water tank levels, and photos sent to cell phones cut costs by saving many miles of driving.Bill undertook a mix of mechanical removal and prescribed burns to stop the encroachment ofTamarisk and Eastern Red Cedar trees along the ranch’s productive and valuable river bottom corridor. Widespread tree cover was replaced with more than 200 varieties of native grasses, plants, and forbs. Strong populations of native fish and birds at Barby Ranch are indicators of clean water and healthy grasslands.Bill also used prescribed fire to manage Sand Sagebrush on pastureland instead of broadcasting chemicals that would have killed nontargeted broadleaf vegetation. These beneficial plants can comprise more than 30 percent of cattle’s diet while benefitting pollinators and grassland birds.Though not common practice in Kansas, Bill’s use of prescribed fire as a conservation tool has demonstrated a natural alternative to control tree infestation and prevent wildfires.
