It’s
a celebration for all ages—and the entire community is invited! The Hays
Symphony will be presenting its annual Children’s Halloween Concert, “¡Fiesta
Mexicana!,” on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. in FHSU’s Beach/Schmidt
Performing Arts Center. 

Featured
for the Halloween Concert this year are the vibrant sounds of Mexico with music
by composers Moncayo, Elizondo, and Márquez. This colorful musical lineup
honors Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and Day of the Dead festivities.

In
José Pablo Moncayo's Huapango,
listeners will feel the swirling joy and pride of Mexico's famous fandango, a style of musical composition
that practically invites concert attendees directly to the dance floor.

The
energy continues with José Elizondo's Estampas
Mexicanas, a lively parade of simple folk-like tunes and rhythms. The piece
is a statement which celebrates life and all of its colors! Elizondo's
"Atardecer Tapatío" (from Danzas
Latinoamericanas) draws motifs from Mexican jarabe folk-dance music and the
sound of mariachi bands. It is a tribute to the composer’s homeland.

Finally,
attendees hear one of the most famous orchestral Mexican contemporary classical
music compositions with Arturo Márquez's Danzón
No. 2. Inspired by a visit to a ballroom in Veracruz, the wild danzón will
close out the concert with thrilling push, pull, and pulse.

Before
the concert, parents are encouraged to bring their children in costume to
participate in a series of hands-on music activities starting at 1:15 p.m. All
pre-concert activities will begin in the FHSU Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts
Center lobby. 

Youth
concert-goers can try their hand at violin, viola, cello, and bass in the
String Instrument Petting Zoo led by USD 489 teachers. They can also explore
the other side of the orchestra and Meet the Woodwinds and Brass Families. In
addition, FHSU’s National Association for Music Education (NAfME) students will
assist children in themed Día de Muertos arts and crafts. Hays Public Library
staff will lead a Musical Storytime. For photo opportunities, there will be a
booth curated with fun Día de Muertos, Halloween, and fall-themed props. 

Like
in years past, children dressed in the Halloween spirit will be invited to join
in the Halloween Costume Parade just before the concert where they will march
behind brass players leading the parade. 

Following
the concert, the Hays Symphony will be offering free trick-or-treat bags to the
first 250 children who came for the afternoon pre-concert activities. The
trick-or-treat bags are sponsored by a generous donation from Werth Wealth
Management. 

“¡Fiesta
Mexicana!” marks the eighth year that the Hays Symphony has put on the
Children’s Halloween Concert, an event which invites young people to explore
hands-on the world of orchestral music through an afternoon of family friendly
activities. It’s one of the musicians’ favorite concerts of the year because
they get to share their love of music along with the spooky season, and the
orchestra is eager to see the concert hall full of spirit again this year.

FHSU’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) will host its fourth annual Soup Fest fundraiser Oct. 25 from 5-7 p.m. in the Herndon Clinic on the first floor of Albertson Hall.

NSSLHA is a student organization in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Proceeds from the event will go to offset expenses of families with children receiving services at the Herndon Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.

The clinic’s primary purpose is to provide students majoring in the field of communication disorders with observation and clinical experiences related to speech, language, hearing, and swallowing disorders. It also serves as a resource for the community and western Kansas.

Soup Fest is open to the public and includes activities for all ages. The cost is $10 for three samples or one bowl of soup, dessert, and water. Attendees are encouraged to vote on their favorite soup and tour the Herndon Clinic.

“Soup Fest is a wonderful opportunity to try some good soup, socialize, and raise money for the families we serve at the Herndon Clinic on the FHSU campus,” said Madalyn Morelock, a second-year graduate student.

I always love the changing of the seasons, especially summer to fall. After the heat of the summer, the cool, crisp mornings and cooler days makes me happy. One of the first signs that I can tell that summer is on its way out is the first leaves on the cottonwood trees starting to turn yellow. The reds and oranges of the maples and oaks quickly follow suite. &nbsp;Although the New England states is the place to view the changing of the seasons, Kansas is no slouch. I found an article this week for you for the Horticulture Department about why trees change the colors they do and how you get the striking colors of fall.&nbsp;

Part of the allure of fall foliage is color variation. There are trees that turn red, purple, yellow, orange and brown.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Specific plant pigments determine individual colors. Foliage derives its normal green color from chlorophyll, the substance that captures the energy of the sun. Other pigments produce fall colors. Reds and purples are caused by anthocyanins, yellows by xanthophylls, and oranges by a combination of carotenes and xanthophylls. Browns are the result of tannins present in the leaf. Most of these substances are present throughout the growing season but are masked by the green color produced by chlorophyll. Anthocyanins are the exception and are produced after the chlorophyll is destroyed in the fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

If you have ever seen pictures of New England in the fall, you have probably wondered why trees in Kansas usually do not color as well. This difference is partly because of the tree species prevalent in New England. Certain oaks and maples naturally produce good color. Coloring also is influenced by the weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Warm, sunny days and cool nights are ideal for good color. The sunny days encourage photosynthesis and, thus, sugar accumulation in the leaves. As fall progresses, each leaf develops an abscission layer at the base of the petiole, or leaf stem, that prevents these sugars from being transported down the trunk to the roots for storage. This high sugar content in the leaves produces more intense colors. Cloudy days and warm nights prevent some of the sugar accumulation in the leaves and results in less vibrant colors.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Weather during other parts of the growing season also can have an effect. Heavy rains in the early spring or hot, dry weather during the summer can both have a deleterious effect on fall color.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

CPB has awarded a total of 30 grants to date through the first round of funding for the Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) grant program, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Stations in Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia are the latest to receive funding to upgrade equipment for public safety.

“Public media stations play a vital role in emergency alerting in communities across the country,” said Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “The Next Generation Warning System grant program helps public media organizations, especially in rural areas, to replace and upgrade their infrastructure so that they can continue to keep their communities safe.”

The NGWS grant program, which prioritizes public media stations, provides funding for media organizations to upgrade their equipment and receive training to enhance alerting and warning capabilities, including the ability to use NextGen TV broadcast technology and comparable digital broadcast technology for radio stations.

“FEMA is committed to building resilience by rapidly disseminating emergency communications to the public through diverse integrated pathways,” said FEMA IPAWS Director Manny Centeno. “FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) provides a suite of tools and resources for local authorities to effectively send emergency communications to the public. We continue developing the Next Generation Warning System concept as we improve continuity and leverage new technologies, such as ATSC 3.0, that can reach the public wherever they are.”

Stations recently receiving NGWS funding are:

•&nbsp;Alabama A&amp;M/WJAB-FM, Normal, AL, up to $246,263 to replace a 30-year-old transmitter, providing a stronger signal that reaches more underserved communities with emergency alerts.

•&nbsp;Tri-State Public Media/WNIN, Evansville, IN, up to $161,481 to replace and upgrade critical broadcasting infrastructure to ensure emergency alerts can be sent to rural and underserved communities.

•&nbsp;Smoky Hills Public Television/KOOD-TV, Bunker Hill, KS, up to $1,761,843 to update the main transmitter tower to ATSC 3.0 so that central and western Kansans will have access to enhanced emergency communications when the market transitions to the newest broadcast standard.

•&nbsp;Red River Radio/KDAQ-FM, Shreveport, LA, up to $80,642 to replace critical resiliency infrastructure, including three emergency generators, that will ensure rural and underserved communities have access to emergency communications.

•&nbsp;Mid-South Public Communications Foundation/WKNO-TV &amp;WKNO-FM, Cordova, TN, up to $1,657,012 to replace two transmitters and two emergency generators&nbsp;to ensure the rural agricultural communities in Tennessee, Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas receive timely emergency communications.

•&nbsp;Blue Ridge Public Television/WBRA-TV, Roanoke, VA, up to $1,122,074 to replace critical broadcast infrastructure that will strengthen their signal in the mountainous region to reach more rural communities with targeted emergency alerts.

Last month, CPB received approximately 170 station applications totaling more than $109 million for the second round of NGWS funding. The total amount of NGWS grant funds available in round two is $48 million, approved by Congress in Fiscal Year 2023.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded CPB a total of $136 million in FY 2022, FY 2023, and FY 2024-appropriated funds to establish and implement the Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) grant program. CPB is administering a competitive grant program for public television and public radio stations to replace and upgrade infrastructure to expand alert, warning, and interoperable communications, creating a more resilient and secure public alerting system. Stations in Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia are the latest to receive funding to upgrade equipment for public safety.“Public media stations play a vital role in emergency alerting in communities across the country,” said Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “The Next Generation Warning System grant program helps public media organizations, especially in rural areas, to replace and upgrade their infrastructure so that they can continue to keep their communities safe.”The NGWS grant program, which prioritizes public media stations, provides funding for media organizations to upgrade their equipment and receive training to enhance alerting and warning capabilities, including the ability to use NextGen TV broadcast technology and comparable digital broadcast technology for radio stations.“FEMA is committed to building resilience by rapidly disseminating emergency communications to the public through diverse integrated pathways,” said FEMA IPAWS Director Manny Centeno. “FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) provides a suite of tools and resources for local authorities to effectively send emergency communications to the public. We continue developing the Next Generation Warning System concept as we improve continuity and leverage new technologies, such as ATSC 3.0, that can reach the public wherever they are.”Stations recently receiving NGWS funding are:•&nbsp;Alabama A&amp;M/WJAB-FM, Normal, AL, up to $246,263 to replace a 30-year-old transmitter, providing a stronger signal that reaches more underserved communities with emergency alerts.•&nbsp;Tri-State Public Media/WNIN, Evansville, IN, up to $161,481 to replace and upgrade critical broadcasting infrastructure to ensure emergency alerts can be sent to rural and underserved communities.•&nbsp;Smoky Hills Public Television/KOOD-TV, Bunker Hill, KS, up to $1,761,843 to update the main transmitter tower to ATSC 3.0 so that central and western Kansans will have access to enhanced emergency communications when the market transitions to the newest broadcast standard.•&nbsp;Red River Radio/KDAQ-FM, Shreveport, LA, up to $80,642 to replace critical resiliency infrastructure, including three emergency generators, that will ensure rural and underserved communities have access to emergency communications.•&nbsp;Mid-South Public Communications Foundation/WKNO-TV &amp;WKNO-FM, Cordova, TN, up to $1,657,012 to replace two transmitters and two emergency generators&nbsp;to ensure the rural agricultural communities in Tennessee, Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas receive timely emergency communications.•&nbsp;Blue Ridge Public Television/WBRA-TV, Roanoke, VA, up to $1,122,074 to replace critical broadcast infrastructure that will strengthen their signal in the mountainous region to reach more rural communities with targeted emergency alerts.Last month, CPB received approximately 170 station applications totaling more than $109 million for the second round of NGWS funding. The total amount of NGWS grant funds available in round two is $48 million, approved by Congress in Fiscal Year 2023.About the NGWS Grant ProgramThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded CPB a total of $136 million in FY 2022, FY 2023, and FY 2024-appropriated funds to establish and implement the Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) grant program. Enhance your oil painting skills in this two-day workshop with experienced artist Laurie Albin. Laurie will cover the basics of oil painting, demonstrate key techniques, and guide students in color development. The workshop will take place at the Logan Youth Center, 402 W. Church, Logan, KS, on October 25th &amp; 26th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

Participants will use a landscape photo as a reference to create an original work of art. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced painter, you'll focus on value changes in landscapes and learn how to add dramatic flair to your work. Most importantly, you'll experience the joy of applying brush to canvas.
