There was a large pine tree directly between his ball and the green. The old man said, “You know, when I was your age I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard and hit the ball, which smacked solidly into the tree and dropped to the ground about one foot from where it had started. The old man remarked, “Of course, when I was your age that tree was only 3 feet tall.”

United Wireless Arena, managed by VenuWorks, is&nbsp;excited to announce that Randy Rogers Band, Casey Donahew, and Josh Abbott Band&nbsp;will be coming to Dodge City on Friday, December 5&nbsp;For their “Dodge City Takeover" concert.

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. on December 5 and the concert will start at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for Dodge City Takeover will&nbsp;go on sale Friday, October 3 at 10 a.m. CST.&nbsp;

As Country music continues broadening its influence in every corner of the modern soundscape, the quickly growing 'Red Dirt' genre, which encapsulates the Western lifestyle and outlaw sound, is taking centerstage lead by acts such as the influential Randy Rogers Band. 

For over 20 years, the band's roster and traditional approach have remained unchanged and inspired the surge in a new generation of artists. Acts such as Parker McCollum, Koe Wetzel, Flatland Cavalry, and William Beckmann all began their musical careers on the building blocks set forth by Randy Rogers Band. 

The band's second album, Rollercoaster, is applauded as one of the most impactful collections in the Texas music scene. The influence of this record garnered the band bookings in venues once thought out of reach and made them a pillar of 'Red Dirt' Country music. 

In 2024, the record celebrated its 20th anniversary, and the Randy Rogers Band released a re-mastered/re-sequenced edition of Rollercoaster to commemorate the music that ignited their long-lasting journey as a staple Texas music act. 

Now, the band is back with brand new music after two years, kicking off 2025 with their track, “Break Itself,” off their upcoming EP, The Going, out on October 24th. The EP includes the band's other recent releases, "Is This Thing Workin” featuring Country superstar, Parker McCollum, and the EP title track, "The Going." The project is an updated sound that still anchors to the Red Dirt genre that made them one of the most influential bands out of Texas.&nbsp;

Texas Country Powerhouse and Fort Worth native, Casey Donahew—honored with his own “Casey Donahew Day” on October 22 and whose beloved song “Stockyards” was named the city’s official anthem—continues to define the sound of Texas country. 

Over more than two decades, Donahew has earned a devoted following by delivering vivid, relatable narratives that blend cowboy grit, love stories, and offbeat characters. 

His latest release, "Never Not Love You," a 17-track tour de force, underscores his ability to capture life’s highs and lows with a storyteller’s precision and a showman’s heart. With 12 albums and an astounding 29 singles reaching the top of the Texas charts, Donahew has proven himself a consistent hitmaker and one of the genre’s most durable voices. 

Known for writing the majority of his material solo, he maintains a deeply personal connection to his music, allowing fans to experience his unmistakable perspective. For nearly two decades, Josh Abbott Band (JAB) have held strong as one of the most potent and vital forces in Texas country music. Fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Josh Abbott, the band has built an ardent following on the strengths of their fiery live show, wide-ranging instrumentation, relentless touring schedule, and seven acclaimed studio albums spotlighting their unique sound and honest songwriting. With three RIAA gold-certified singles, JAB has found success while staying true to their independent spirit.

JAB first formed at Texas Tech University in 2006 when Josh started playing with fraternity brother Austin Davis (banjo). A weather intern walks into a bar and asks for a Cold Draft. Suddenly the bar door swings open and gusty cool air fills up the bar. After drinking his Draft things seem to get back to normal. The guy then orders a Thunderclap on ice. Suddenly the roof gets pelted with hail stones and an intense lightning flash and thunderous explosion rock the bar. After drinking his Thunderclap things seem to once again get back to normal. Feeling rather good at this point he asks for a third drink- ordering a Tornado on the rocks. This time the bar is not only pelted with even larger hail stones but ferocious winds rip the door off its hinges, shake the bar violently and break every window. Feeling extra good and cocky at this point he then orders an extra large and extra strong Hurricane. The bartender after this request looks up at the guy perplexed and says, “Sorry fella, we have no Hurricanes in Kansas.”

Rehearsals are now underway for the Hays High School fall play, “Peter Pan – Journey To Neverland.”

Scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13-15 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16, it will be the first theatrical production in the new Performing Arts Center (PAC) at HHS. Ticket information will be announced at a later date.

According to director Bill Gasper, the play is an original non-musical adaptation of the 1911 novel by J.M. Barrie, which is an expanded version of his 1904 play. Gasper said both the novel and play are in the public domain, which has led to numerous non-musical and musical adaptations.

“Many people mistakenly believe that Peter Pan is a musical, but that’s not the case,” Gasper said. “The first musical adaptation was the 1950 Broadway production with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein. In fact, it wasn’t even a full-scale musical. A later 1954 musical adaptation became the version most people recognize. Disney also released an animated musical version in 1953.”

Gasper said the HHS version maintains the charm of the original, which follows the adventure of Peter Pan and his friends, including Wendy Darling, her brothers, the Lost Boys, and the pirate Captain Hook, in the magical land of Neverland. The story explores themes of childhood, imagination, and the transition from childhood to adulthood.

“Although we’re not equipped to actually ‘fly’ actors, our version features plenty of action with humorous moments throughout,” Gasper said. “It truly is a fun performance for the entire family.”

Auditions for the play took place on Sept. 9 and 10, with rehearsals getting underway on Sept. 16. It features a cast of 24 with additional students serving as members of the crew.

“The first week of rehearsals went very well,” Gasper said. “I’m very pleased with the overall talent of the cast and crew, and the new Performing Arts Center is simply a great facility. The transition to working in a new space comes with certain challenges, but I’m excited to be part of its first theatrical production.”

After the solder gave his order, the cook asked how the soldier wanted his eggs. Not wanting to burden him further, the soldier said cheerfully, “Oh, whatever is easiest for you.” The cook took two eggs, cracked them open onto the soldier’s plate and then handed it back to him.
