WICHITA — The American Red Cross is experiencing a national blood shortage. Fewer donors than needed gave this summer, drawing down the national blood supply and reducing distributions of some of the most needed blood types to hospitals. Hurricane Idalia further strained the blood supply with blood drive cancellations and reduced blood and platelet donations in affected areas.&nbsp;

Donors of all blood types are urgently needed, and there is an emergency need for type O blood donors to make an appointment to give now to ensure patients across the country continue to receive critical medical care.&nbsp;

When Idalia slammed into the Southeast – leading to widespread power outages,&nbsp;travel hazards and flooding – the storm also forced the cancellation of over a dozen blood drives and caused hundreds of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. This compounded a shortfall of about 30,000 donations in August. Right now, blood product distributions to hospitals are outpacing the number of blood donations coming in.

The Red Cross needs blood donors now. Food donations needed at First Call for Help; shelves nearly bare

COLBY — The fall semester Third Thursday gallery walk opens from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at five locations in Colby.

Pieces by Cody Beeson of St. Francis and Colby's Jeanne Cox and Madeline McCormick will be displayed at the Colby Community College Cultural Arts Center Gallery. The Detherage Trio out of Hays will perform live music.

Downtown, clay artist Zak Ashburn of Denver will be in the Jonas Gallery, and Pioneer Memorial Library features pen, pencil, and watercolor creations of St. Francis's Kary Zweygardt. Dustin Olsen, from Schoenchen, will be at the Prairie Museum of Art &amp; History, and Brown Dove Healing Arts is the site for photographer Brenton Kirkhart of Colby.

"We're starting this year with more locations and some amazing art," said CCC art instructor Rebel Mahieu. "The pieces are original, and many will be for sale."

Admission is free. Refreshments will be served at each location.

Art gallery walk resumes Sept. 21 in Colby

GREAT BEND — Barton Community College has teamed up with the CKP Suicide Prevention Task Force to bring author, actor, and international public speaker Josh Rivedal to the Barton County campus to entertain and educate about the importance of mental health and wellbeing. 

His program, “How to Live Mentally Well and Crush it During Difficult Times,” will be free and open to the public from 7-8:30 p.m. Tue., Oct. 10 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. It will also be live streamed from Barton’s YouTube&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/BaCOUGARnKS" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">page</a>.

Barton Community College Mental Health Counselor Jakki Maser said she is excited to bring Josh Rivedal to the community to expand the conversations around mental health and wellness.

“It’s important that people know that wellbeing does not mean being happy all the time or that there won’t be stress, difficult periods, or emotional discomfort,” she said. 

“Mental wellness encompasses all emotions, and we want to bring awareness to the fact that all people struggle and have experiences that are really hard to talk about. Nobody is alone in that. It is by having those hard conversations that we learn how to cope, adapt, connect, and grow from those difficult experiences, and that is what creates resiliency and wellness. In his presentation, Josh inspires and challenges people to do those very things,”&nbsp;Maser said.

According to his <a href="http://www.joshuarivedal.com/">website</a>, Josh Rivedal is the founder and creative director of The i'Mpossible Project.

This organization creates workshops, seminars, curriculum, continuing education, books, and multimedia on suicide prevention and mental health in workplaces, campuses, school districts, communities, professional organizations, and more. A project born out of his own personal struggle with mental health and the loss of his father to suicide, Rivedal creates content that is relatable and that inspires, educates, entertains, and transforms.

RUSSELL - Russell calls for a mandatory reduction in water usage.Big Creek is one of the city’s two water sources. Big Creek has stopped flowing over the low head dam immediately downstream from the city’s intake structure, a benchmark for moving to Stage 2 Water Warning.

The following mandatory water conservation measures for use of potable water from the City’s municipal water supply system are in place until the water warning is terminated:

1. Waste of water is prohibited. This includes permitting water to escape down a gutter, ditch, or other surface drain and also failure to repair a controllable leak of water due to defective plumbing; and,

2. No outdoor watering for residential or public grounds for gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs, water gardens, plants, parks, golf courses, and playing fields is prohibited except for one day per calendar week, which shall be for each user be that property’s sanitation pickup day as designated by the city. Water on such days is permitted only before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. If a customer has multiple sanitation pick-up days in a week, then outdoor water shall be permitted on only the first sanitation pickup day of the week for such a customer; and,

3. Filling or refilling residential above and/or below-ground swimming pools is prohibited; and,

4. Washing of motor vehicles, boats, and trailers on a commercial or industrial property is prohibited except for commercial or industrial vehicles used in the operation of such business and as an ordinary and common practice to operate such business and except for the washing of vehicles at commercial truck and/or car washes; and,

5. Washing of the exterior of any building or structure on any grounds is prohibited; and,

6. Industrial and commercial users shall not water their lawns or non-commercial trees, shrubs, and plants. Trees, shrubs, and plats held for sale by commercial and retail sellers may be watered; and,

7. Industrial users of water are required to reduce their consumption to an amount equivalent to 85% of the average use for the prior five&nbsp; years for the month in question.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Stage 2 Water Emergency shall not restrict the use of city effluent water.

The annual Frontier Open Disc Golf Tournament is today and Saturday at Frontier Park in Hays.

This is the 39th-annual tournament and the 40th year for the course at Frontier Park.

Hays is celebrating 90 years that Frontier Park has been designated for public use.

The tournament has about 180 competitors for the two-day event.

NATOMA — Natoma American Legion "Thomas J. Hogan" Post 109 with the Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars Bob Dole Post 6420 joined together their color guards to lead the annual Labor Day Parade. 

The veterans' organizations promote advocacy for veterans and their families, for the men and women who fought, died, and survived in decades of wars and conflicts throughout the world. 

The veterans' posts continue to promote patriotism, civic responsibility, and support of youth and local programs in communities, state, and nation. The veterans continue to lift up the ideals of America's freedom through ceremonies, memorials, and in celebrations throughout the year.&nbsp;

Hays products compete in Coolest Thing Made in Kansas contest; voting open now

Fort Hays State University, the Tiger Fitness Center, and local first responders will host the third-annual 9/11 Memorial Event and Stair Climb on Saturday. The event, held at Lewis Field on the campus of Fort Hays State University, begins at 7:46 a.m.

All ages are welcome at the event, with a brief memorial ceremony taking place ahead of the stair climb or walk. The memorial will highlight the sacrifices of first responders who put others first during the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and on Flight 93.

Participants are encouraged to attend the memorial event and participate in as much, or as little of the stair climb or walk as preferred to honor first responders and reflect on the events from Sept. 11, 2001. 

The FHSU track will be open and available for participants who do not wish to climb stairs.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m., with the official start time aligning with the moment the first tower was struck at 7:46 CST.

announcing that an asphalt road sealing project will take place starting at

The Kansas Small Business Development Center at Fort Hays State University will offer its first cybersecurity conference, Cybersecurity 101 for Any Business, on Oct. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Robbins Alumni Center at FHSU.

The conference will be available for owners or employees of any business. Participants can attend in person or with remote viewing groups available in Dodge City, Liberal, and Goodland.

Focusing on real-life examples, the conference will help business owners and support staff learn more about cybersecurity, enabling an understanding of the importance of risk mitigation and actionable steps.

Cybersecurity conference to provide vital information for W. Kansas businesses

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin resurfacing work on portions of U.S. 36 and K-261 in Norton County on Wednesday.

Project activity will include milling and overlay on approximately 15 miles of U.S. 36 starting at the Decatur County line and ending near West Avenue in Norton. Construction crews will also complete a mill and overlay on 1.2 miles of K-261 near the Prairie Dog State Park. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the construction zones and directed by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours. Motorists should plan for delays of up to 15 minutes.

KDOT expects the projects to be completed by the end of October, conditions permitting.

APAC-Kansas Inc., Shears Division, of Hutchinson is the primary contractor for the projects with a combined contract cost of approximately $6 million.

U.S. 36 resurfacing to start today in Rawlins County

Ellis County Historical Society in Hays will host
“Kansas Music History,” a presentation and discussion by Derrick Doty at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at 100 W. Seventh in downtown Hays.

What is it like to be a musician from Kansas and what can
their music tell us about time and place? Using music and storytelling, this
presentation explores informal music traditions, styles and musicians from
Territorial Kansas up through the age of the radio and concludes with a
demonstration of various instruments and music from early 19th and 20th century
Kansas.

Doty is a music historian and works at the
Riley County Historical Society in Manhattan, Kan. He has taught music lessons for more than 20 years, specializing in piano, guitar, fiddle and mandolin. He plays the fiddle in Tallgrass Express String Band, a folk group based

Riley County Historical Society in Manhattan, Kan. He has taught music lessons for more than 20 years, specializing in piano, guitar, fiddle and mandolin. He plays the fiddle in Tallgrass Express String Band, a folk group based
in the Flint Hills, which plays original songs about the region.

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. 

Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7:00 AM, and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

GREAT BEND - The Central Kansas Community Choir is recruiting singers for the fall 2023 season. Rehearsals will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday evenings starting August 28 in the Morrison Chapel in the Fine Arts Building, Barton Community College.

Barton Community College sponsors the choir which strives to provide challenging performances of quality literature for the enjoyment of the residents of the central Kansas area. 

Choir membership is open to all singers high school age and above. Participants must have a choral singing background and be able to attend all rehearsals as the literature will be challenging and rehearsal time is relatively short.

Barton County residents and those in surrounding counties interested in participating can contact Barton Director of Choral Activities Dr. Eric Foley at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:foleye@bartonccc.edu">foleye@bartonccc.edu</a>&nbsp;or 620-792-9395.

The CKCC will rehearse with the Barton Concert Choir, and the combined choirs will be directed by Foley.

This fall marks the 12th season for this ensemble. It was founded in the spring of 2003 by former director Vern Fryberger. It is a non-denominational mixed chorus. 

Each singer will be charged a $25 fee to help pay for music and production expenses.

Area singers wanted for Central Kansas Community Choir in Great Bend

LOGAN — The 45th annual Logan Labor Day Celebration at the Logan Golf Course, located 1.25 miles east of Logan on Highway 9, will be held Sunday, September 3. 

The Hansen Museum with funds from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation sponsors this annual family-friendly event. There is no admission fee.

The day kicks off at 11:00 a.m. with a sand volleyball tournament and the Dane G. Bales Jr. Memorial Car Show. The car show has been a highlight of the Labor Day Celebration since 1998. This year’s featured car is Gary McClanahan’s 1947 Plymouth. Make sure to get there before 4:00 p.m. to check out everything from classic coupes and beefed-up muscle cars to antique pickup trucks and flashy hot rods.

Get some exercise, see the sights, or win a prize at this year’s festivities. 

Let the kids run loose and find entertainment that will burn off some energy by jumping in the bouncy house or impressing their friends with awesome tricks on the bungee trampoline.
