TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2023&nbsp;To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards. The popular annual awards program recognizes companies and individuals around the state for the positive impact they make to their communities and to the Kansas economy.

This year’s banquet and award ceremony will be held October 12th at the B-29 Doc Hangar, Education and Visitors Center in Wichita.

“It is important to celebrate the successes of Kansas companies and businesspeople who not only are driving the state economy but uplifting their local communities,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“To The Stars&nbsp;recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit and achievement that are on display daily throughout our great state. I would encourage everyone to nominate a company or individual for this notable honor.”

RUSSELL - In a partnership with Ogallala Commons and Russell County Economic Development &amp; CVB, the city of Russell, Kansas is accepting applications for internships/apprenticeships to be completed this summer/fall.

Paid internships/apprenticeships through Ogallala Commons provide work experience and professional skill-building that is essential for transitioning from school to the realities of a full-time career.

Opportunities range from 100-240 hours and vary in pay (stipend) received – usually $11 -$14 per hour.

This week I had several of our 4-H Ambassadors assist me in preparing some publicity for the Barton County Fair. Natalie Williams and the Barton Country 4-H Ambassadors invite you to check out "Country Pride, County Wide at the Barton County Fair" happening July 5-9.

Pre-fair events start with the fashion revue, fiber arts, and clothing construction judging on June 29. Jayla Wyant hopes that you will check out the results from these events during the fair dates July 5-9. We have a lot of creative 4-H members who have learned new skills all year and look forward sharing them with you.

Jonas Kern is one of the Barton County 4-H Ambassadors and reminds you that much of the 4-H judging will be completed on Wednesday, July 5th, and in the evening, we’ll hold our annual youth rally in the ring in Expo III. Thursday, July 6, we’ll start off our day with the Business Appreciation Breakfast and Chamber Coffee. All are welcome, and be sure to check out all of the great foods, photography, woodworking, entomology exhibits and much more.

Livestock shows are a regular part of many county fairs. Parker Dicks and the Barton County Ambassadors invite you to check out the swine show on Thursday at 9 a.m., horse halter classes on Thursday at 3 p.m., bucket calf show on Thursday at 6 p.m., the sheep and goat show on Friday at starting at 8 a.m., the beef show on Friday at 5 p.m., and the horse show on Saturday at 8 a.m.. Round Robin is an event where the top showman of each species compete against one another for the overall best showman or woman. Round Robin has been moved to Saturday, July 8 at 4 p.m.

Russell's Freedom Fest to honor Bob Dole 

Visitors to Sternberg Museum in Hays may have noticed several large, bright yellow structures at the entrance of the nature trail located just west of the main facility, 3000 Sternberg Drive.

“The Bee Project” is currently on exhibit and it features bees made from found and recycled objects. Presented by artist Elena Smyrniotis, “The Bee Project” focuses on the importance of pollinators and challenges visitors to participate in the exhibit by making their own bees from found and recycled objects.

The number of bees on the structures will soon multiply as the museum plans a July 1 workshop at which participants will create their own bee sculptures from recycled and found materials, mostly plastic and metals. The structures will remain in place until August.

The free workshop, which is designed to be a family activity for both parents and kids, is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. The program will be led by Sternberg education and outreach director Ian Trevethan.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own recycled and found materials, and the museum will have some materials on hand as well. Materials can include aluminum cans, plastic containers, discarded toys, flyswatters, etc.

“Basically anything that can be used for a bee’s body and wings,” Trevethan said.

At the conclusion of the activity, participants will write their names on their bees and return to the exhibit to attach them to the structures.

“It’s a very thoughtful exhibit in which people take discarded and found objects and create something from those objects,” Trevethan said.

No Hays city commission meeting this week

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks have issued a public health advisory update due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.  Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water.

The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is
announcing that 12th Street between Hall Street and Rome Crossing
will be closed to through traffic for bridge repairs, beginning on Monday, June
19th, until the project is completed. 

The road will close at 8:30 am and reopen at 4:30 pm each
day. 

The project is estimated to last approximately two days.

LOGAN - The Hansen Museum’s Continuing Education Program is excited to have representational landscape painter of the west and Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, David Vollbracht, who will teach a three-day oil painting workshop at the Hansen Museum on July 6, 7, and 8, 2023. 

During this workshop, Vollbracht will demonstrate oil painting techniques and teach students to enhance their personal painting style with composition, color, and brushwork. Students will explore design, color, value, and composition as well as the more elusive elements of mood, passion, and attitude.

Vollbracht earned his art degree from Fort Hays State University. His knowledge has been nurtured by attending the workshops of oil painters such as Clyde Aspevig and Wayne Wolfe. 

Vollbracht’s art reflects the quality of light, nature, and spirit drawn from the land. Vollbracht emphasizes the beauty and importance of the natural landscape in his compositions. He is intrigued by patterns and shapes in nature and the effect that light has on these elements. His work has been in numerous shows including Mountain Oyster Club Show, Tucson, AZ; One Man Show, Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita, KS; National Miniature Show, La Luz, NM; and National Oil Painters of America Exhibitions, and Rocky Mountain Plein Air Show, Winter Park, CO.

Registration fees for this workshop are $180.00 with discounts available to Patron and Sustaining Members of the Hansen Museum.

Registration open for Vollbracht painting workshop at Hansen Museum

Saint Francis Ministries will offer a conference for adults involved in foster care or adoption. The free “Hope for the Journey Conference” will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St.

The video conference is designed “to equip and encourage parents and caregivers meeting the needs of children impacted by adoption and/or foster care,” a news release said.

The conference will “bring together teaching, resources, and practical experiences (so that) parents and caregivers—and the churches and organizations seeking to serve these children and families--will gain a deeper understanding of these children’s needs,” the news release added.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided. Celebration Community Church in Hays is underwriting the cost of the lunch, said Kristy Opat, area Foster Homes Recruiter for Saint Francis.

The day’s events will include prize drawings, and training certificates will be provided upon request. Childcare will not be provided.

Opat said, “It is incredibly important to support our foster homes, who are our front-line, in the trench, heroes parenting these children of our communities. Offering quality resources, trainings, and support is imperative to give foster parents the proper tools to meet the needs of the children placed with them.”

She encouraged anyone wanting more information about adoption or becoming a foster parent to attend. The training is open to the public.&nbsp;

Hays conference will help equip adults for foster care, adoption 

GREAT BEND - The Kansas Wetlands Education Center invites students who have completed seventh to 11th&nbsp;grade to “come and get their hands dirty” as they explore different field biology methods with experts at Cheyenne Bottoms.

Participants will go Dove Banding with Tom Bidrowski, Migratory Game Bird Specialist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, install Wood Duck Houses in the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area with KDWP manager Jason Wagner, learn about the Cliff Swallow research project from our Fort Hays State University Graduate Assistant Sonja Brandt, and observe the innovative field projects, like virtual fencing, at The Nature Conservancy's Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve.

The event will be held on Friday, July 21, and is limited to 10 participants. The camp costs $10 and will include a snack, a KWEC string bag, and a field notebook.  </figure>By FHSU University CommunicationsGREAT BEND - The Kansas Wetlands Education Center invites students who have completed seventh to 11th&nbsp;grade to “come and get their hands dirty” as they explore different field biology methods with experts at Cheyenne Bottoms.Participants will go Dove Banding with Tom Bidrowski, Migratory Game Bird Specialist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, install Wood Duck Houses in the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area with KDWP manager Jason Wagner, learn about the Cliff Swallow research project from our Fort Hays State University Graduate Assistant Sonja Brandt, and observe the innovative field projects, like virtual fencing, at The Nature Conservancy's Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve.The event will be held on Friday, July 21, and is limited to 10 participants. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.  Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.
