GREAT BEND - Barton Community College invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to a celebratory groundbreaking event for the College’s new Ag and Transportation Complex at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the future site of the complex on the east side of campus. Parking will be available in the east lot outside of the Technical Building.

Upon completion, the facility will be home to new classrooms for high-demand programs including Agriculture Business Management, Crop Protection, Beef Cattle Production, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It will also house the highly anticipated Case New Holland (CNH) Top Tech Industrial Training program.

The estimated construction cost of $3.6 million is funded by a 1:1 matching grant of federal stimulus funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) issued by the Kansas Department of Commerce and private donations. The State of Kansas has also approved tax credits to be used for capital improvements by community and technical colleges. These 60 percent tax credits are available first-come, first-served.

Harbin Construction out of Salina was awarded the contract for the project and will begin construction immediately. The project is projected to be completed in early 2024.

PBS KIDS programs prepare kids for school and lead them to a bright future, but as more Kansans watch on their own schedule, Smoky Hills PBS is changing its daytime schedule.

Beginning Feb. 27, Smoky Hills PBS’s daytime PBS KIDS programming block will run from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then pick up again from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the weekdays. 

There will be a block of time from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for general audience programming.&nbsp; Smoky Hills PBS will start running the Downton Abbey series at 12 p.m., during this general audience block, and then switch over to how-to programs including cooking, travel, and lifestyle programming coming in April.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Our aim is to meet our audience where they are,” said Betsy Schwien, general manager of Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; “Right now, we find that this move will benefit both our youngest viewers and also our adult viewers, bringing them programming in the afternoons that they too can enjoy.”

Viewers can tune into our 24/7 PBS KIDS channel over the air, or download the PBS KIDS App to watch kids shows at any time, free of charge.

World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water. 

To celebrate, the City of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again
partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 14t, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. 

This free event will feature fun, hands-on, "water-related"
activities for kids of all ages. In addition, educational information regarding water conservation
and water quality will be provided.

Tickets for the Wonder Women League's signature fundraising dinner, the Power of the Purse, are on sale now.

The event will be Thursday, March 23, at the Hilton Garden Inn. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m.&nbsp;

The featured speaker will be Miss Kansas Ayanna Hensley. Hensley's social impact initiative as Miss Kansas is ACE's Low: Overcoming Adverse Childhood Experiences.&nbsp;

Her focus for the initiative is to help promote an ideology centered on assisting youth to digest and overcome adversity. Most traumatic situations a child faces will correlate to lifelong problems.

As an individual directly affected by severe trauma, Hensley knows what a child needs to overcome their realities and break their generation cycles.

The Power of the Purse also features a purse raffle and silent and live purse auctions.

Seventy purses have already been donated this year for the event.

Proceeds from the event will be split between the Wonder Women League and the United Way of Ellis County, the league's umbrella organization.

Seating is limited for Power of the Purse. Tickets are $45. Tables of eight are available for $340. RSVP by March 3.

Gun raffle will benefit Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center

Mark your calendars! One of the larger spring farm shows in the Midwest is coming to Salina in March.

The 58th annual Mid America Farm Expo is scheduled for March 22-24, the Salina Chamber of Commerce announced this morning. Hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 22-23 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 24.

The expo, which draws more than 5,000 attendees over three days, will be headquartered at Tony's Pizza Events Center (TPEC), 800 The Midway, with displays also across the street in the Saline County Livestock &amp; Expo Center's Ag Hall, and outdoors in front of Ag Hall and in the TPEC west parking lot.

The latest in farm technology, equipment, and supplies will be on display in approximately 250 exhibits, including some expo exhibit favorites as well as several new exhibits, the chamber noted.

The expo also will feature a variety of seminars by agriculture leaders, including the following.

Eagle Radio tower work begins Monday

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close a portion of K-383 in Norton County for reconstruction starting on Monday, March 13.

The closure will begin at the east U.S. 36 junction and extend approximately 6 miles northeast to the Prairie Dog Creek bridge near Almena. Traffic should follow the signed detour route on U.S. 36 and U.S. 183.

Project activities will consist of widening the highway on existing alignment into a 24-foot mainline surface with 6-foot paved shoulders. Crews will also decrease side slopes and level hills and valleys, which will help improve visibility and increase passing opportunities. Several drainage structures along the route will be replaced as well.

KDOT expects to reopen the highway by the end of 2023, conditions permitting. Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the primary contractor with total contract cost of approximately $15.3 million.

This project is the second phase of reconstruction on 26 miles of K-383 in Norton and Phillips counties. Phase I consisted of approximately 6 miles from east of Long Island to the U.S. 183 junction. Phase III is the remaining 14 miles from Almena to east of Long Island. KDOT is currently finalizing the design plan for phase III and anticipates letting the project for construction in spring 2025.

A musical triple treat is coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre in August.

Jane Gates, Stiefel executive director, announced Thursday that Trombone Shorty &amp; Orleans Avenue and Ziggy Marley with Mavis Staples are scheduled to perform beginning at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

It’s been a remarkable year for&nbsp;Trombone Shorty, who released his most recent album, Lifted, last April. He performed “Shotgun” at the MusiCares Person of the Year event honoring Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson during Grammy week this month and also performed at the Grammy Salute to Paul Simon Concert which aired this past December on CBS. Equal parts master storyteller and motivational guide, he deftly explores issues from environmental awareness to self-empowerment, social injustice to political inequity, while returning again and again to the transformative power of love. It’s impossible to listen to a voice like&nbsp;Mavis Staples’ without contemplating all she’s been through in her life—the album cover features a heartrending Gordon Parks photo that speaks to the casual cruelty of racial segregation in 1950’s Alabama—but it only serves to make her optimism and resilience that much more inspiring and contagious. There is darkness and doubt on the album to be sure (the spirit of Pops Staples informs the mournful “Heavy On My Mind,” which recognizes that some wounds never heal, while the poignant “Never Needed Anyone” stings with the pain of lingering regret) but it’s consistently overpowered by hope and conviction. “Been holding on too long to let go / Running too hard to slow down / Believing too deep to not have faith,” Staples confesses on the soulful “One More Change To Make.” In that sense, the album’s title is more than just an observation. When Staples and Harper join forces to sing “We Get By,” it’s a prayer, a promise, an invitation.

“I sing because I want to leave people feeling better than I found them,” Staples concludes. “I want them to walk away with a positive message in their hearts, feeling stronger than they felt before. I’m singing to myself for those same reasons, too.”

Even the messenger needs a reminder every now and then.

 created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop 
albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous

first-ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the

Calling all car fanatics and enthusiasts — Dennis Gage, TV host of "My Classic Car," will be in Salina Feb. 25 at The Garage.&nbsp; His special visit is no coincidence. Gage will be in Salina to celebrate The Garage's first anniversary at the upcoming&nbsp;<a href="https://seama.org/buckled-in-blue-event">Buckled in Blue&nbsp;</a>event.

During the celebration, one lucky winner will go home with a 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

Matthew Miller-Wells, director of education at&nbsp;<a href="https://seama.org/">The Garage</a>, 134 S. Fourth St., said the 1966 Ford Thunderbird was donated by the Lynn Brown&nbsp;estate in 2016.&nbsp;

"The car has been sitting around and we never really knew quite what exactly to do with it. There wasn't an exhibit in mind and no one really wanted it as a company car," Miller-Wells said. "So we said this is a great opportunity to let patrons experience what was known as America's ultimate luxury automobile."

Miller-Wells told Salina Post that the 1966 Ford Thunderbird is&nbsp;set up like a fighter jet. When the driver sits inside, the steering column swings out of the way. The gauges on the dash even look like aviation gauges.

"There are lights and switches that look like you're sitting in a cockpit. You know, yoke controls and all of your buttons," Miller-Wells said. "I've had the opportunity to drive the car around a little bit since Sankeys Automotive here in town helped us kind of resuscitate it, look it over to make sure it's safe for driving. And it is perhaps the nicest road boat I have ever had the pleasure of driving."

Michelle Peck, executive director for The Garage, said that in its first year, The Garage has seen nearly 25,000 guests. "What is really fantastic about that number is our records also indicate that a third of our guests are from outside of Salina. This automotive attraction is bringing people to our community to relive the past and drive the future," Peck said.&nbsp;

Gage grew up on a small family farm in northwestern Illinois. He started tinkering with cars early on. He also played guitar and trumpet in a variety of rock, folk, and school bands. He went to North Central College in Naperville, Ill., where he majored in both chemistry and physics. His undergraduate research in quantum physics received an American Chemical Society award. He continued his automotive interest and, through the course of his college years, owned a number of muscle and sports cars. He also kept up his music, playing in local coffee houses. Gage accepted a position as a product development scientist at The Procter Gamble Company in Cincinnati. There he either worked on, or created, most of PGs food products in the store including Pringles, with which he bears a striking resemblance to the handlebar mustachioed character on the can. Gage holds a number of patents on PG products. Once again having some disposable income, Gage got back to playing with classic cars.

BUNKER HILL —&nbsp; The tradition continues as Smoky Hills PBS will again be covering the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament live the weekend of Feb. 24.&nbsp; For more than 30 years, Smoky Hills PBS has aired this tournament and made DVDs of the broadcast available.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Action will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. A rebroadcast of the championship finals will air at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.&nbsp;.

Michelle Holdemen, a mental health professional, will share myths commonly associated with therapy and mental health services, how to know when to seek therapy, the benefits of going to therapy, the obstacles that make it difficult to find a therapist in rural America and some solutions to these obstacles.&nbsp; &nbsp; Grater Whey, a charcuterie service in Hays, will walk through how to assemble the perfect charcuterie board and understand the pairings of different meats and cheeses. Siny Joseph, professor and graduate faculty at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>,&nbsp;is among a team of five researchers who have been awarded grant funding from the&nbsp;<a href="https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/convergence-accelerator" target="_blank">National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator program</a>&nbsp;to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. Wichita
 State University is leading the $750,000 National Science Foundation, 
or NSF, grant to gather information and create digital maps of indoor 
spaces that could be used by persons with disabilities.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/faculty/bios/joseph-s.html" target="_blank">Joseph</a>&nbsp;is a co-principal investigator on the research team. The
 NSF Convergence Accelerator program selected 16 multidisciplinary teams
 to develop tools and technologies to enhance the quality of life and 
employment access and opportunities for persons with disabilities as 
part of Track H: Enhancing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. According
 to Wichita State, the creation of MABLE, or Mapping for Accessibility 
in Built Environments, maps through crowdsourcing, experiences, 
observations and robots will help persons with disabilities assess, plan
 and navigate indoor environments with audio and visual information. 
Envisioned users include those with visual or mobility impairments. While
 recent advances in indoor localization technology provide opportunities
 to enable real-time navigation and wayfinding within built 
environments, continued progress has been slowed by the lack of detailed
 and usable accessibility information. The project aims to create a 
community-driven framework and prototypes for information collection, 
processing and analysis for accessible maps, navigating and wayfinding 
development. Joseph's role in the research project will focus on 
creating frameworks for quantifying economic benefits from accessible 
built environments encompassing perspectives of future economic growth 
potential, cost savings and return on investments. Joseph has 
been a faculty member with K-State Salina since 2012. She earned a 
bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a Master of Business 
Administration, specializing in marketing and operations research, from 
institutions in India, and a master's and a doctorate in resource 
economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was also the recipient of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=85769" target="_blank">2022 McArthur Award</a>&nbsp;for excellence in teaching and research at K-State Salina. The
