A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.  Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is
announcing that 12th Street between Hall Street and Rome Crossing
will be closed to through traffic for bridge repairs, beginning on Monday, June
19th, until the project is completed. 

The road will close at 8:30 am and reopen at 4:30 pm each
day. 

The project is estimated to last approximately two days.

LOGAN - The Hansen Museum’s Continuing Education Program is excited to have representational landscape painter of the west and Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, David Vollbracht, who will teach a three-day oil painting workshop at the Hansen Museum on July 6, 7, and 8, 2023. 

During this workshop, Vollbracht will demonstrate oil painting techniques and teach students to enhance their personal painting style with composition, color, and brushwork. Students will explore design, color, value, and composition as well as the more elusive elements of mood, passion, and attitude.

Vollbracht earned his art degree from Fort Hays State University. His knowledge has been nurtured by attending the workshops of oil painters such as Clyde Aspevig and Wayne Wolfe. 

Vollbracht’s art reflects the quality of light, nature, and spirit drawn from the land. Vollbracht emphasizes the beauty and importance of the natural landscape in his compositions. He is intrigued by patterns and shapes in nature and the effect that light has on these elements. His work has been in numerous shows including Mountain Oyster Club Show, Tucson, AZ; One Man Show, Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita, KS; National Miniature Show, La Luz, NM; and National Oil Painters of America Exhibitions, and Rocky Mountain Plein Air Show, Winter Park, CO.

Registration fees for this workshop are $180.00 with discounts available to Patron and Sustaining Members of the Hansen Museum.

Registration open for Vollbracht painting workshop at Hansen Museum

Saint Francis Ministries will offer a conference for adults involved in foster care or adoption. The free “Hope for the Journey Conference” will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St.

The video conference is designed “to equip and encourage parents and caregivers meeting the needs of children impacted by adoption and/or foster care,” a news release said.

The conference will “bring together teaching, resources, and practical experiences (so that) parents and caregivers—and the churches and organizations seeking to serve these children and families--will gain a deeper understanding of these children’s needs,” the news release added.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided. Celebration Community Church in Hays is underwriting the cost of the lunch, said Kristy Opat, area Foster Homes Recruiter for Saint Francis.

The day’s events will include prize drawings, and training certificates will be provided upon request. Childcare will not be provided.

Opat said, “It is incredibly important to support our foster homes, who are our front-line, in the trench, heroes parenting these children of our communities. Offering quality resources, trainings, and support is imperative to give foster parents the proper tools to meet the needs of the children placed with them.”

She encouraged anyone wanting more information about adoption or becoming a foster parent to attend. The training is open to the public.&nbsp;

Participants will go Dove Banding with Tom Bidrowski, Migratory Game Bird Specialist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, install Wood Duck Houses in the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area with KDWP manager Jason Wagner, learn about the Cliff Swallow research project from our Fort Hays State University Graduate Assistant Sonja Brandt, and observe the innovative field projects, like virtual fencing, at The Nature Conservancy's Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve.

The event will be held on Friday, July 21, and is limited to 10 participants. The camp costs $10 and will include a snack, a KWEC string bag, and a field notebook. Work will begin to construct a roundabout at the intersection which will take approximately four weeks. The work is expected to be completed and the intersection reopened the week of July 17.

Travelers should find alternate routes and avoid the intersection during this time.

Free kids' crafts classes at KS Wetlands Education Center during June

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly has announced that the Early Childhood Transition Task Force will embark on a statewide community engagement tour June 27-30, including a stop in Hays, to discuss the challenges communities face in supporting children through their earliest years. 

The task force, created by Governor Kelly’s first executive order of her second term, is charged with reviewing Kansas’ early childhood care and education system and with developing a roadmap for creating a cabinet-level agency dedicated to supporting our youngest Kansans.

“If we want to give our kids the best possible future, then we must give them the strongest possible start. That’s why I started my second term by taking a step to expand access to childcare and early childhood development programs,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly.&nbsp;“Now, we want to hear from Kansans about what my administration and our partners can do to put Kansas on the path to having the most comprehensive, robust early childhood system in the country.”

The Task Force will visit nine cities across the state to discuss successes and challenges affecting the early childhood sectors in each community. 

These meetings are open to the public. Families, service and care providers, community leaders, and business representatives are encouraged to attend. 

Participants will engage in facilitated discussions designed to generate feedback on how the state is administering early childhood programs and how Kansans interact with the state’s governance system. 

Each meeting will be conducted with the assistance of The Hunt Institute, which has been providing support to the Task Force’s work.

The Hays meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wed., June 28, at the Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.

Other meetings are scheduled in Chanute, Wichita, Garden City, Salina, Manhattan, Topeka, Overland Park, and Kansas City.&nbsp;

Registration still open for United Way golf tourney on Friday

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks opened Ellis City Lake to public fish salvage beginning September 2022 due to concerns surrounding low water levels. The public salvage liberalized methods by which fish could be taken (per K.A.R. 115-7-1) and removed all applicable length and creel limits (per K.A.R. 115-25-14). 

Currently, increased water level and improved inflow prospects have negated the utility of the public fish salvage at Ellis City Lake. Thus, the public salvage order will be rescinded coincident with removal of on-site salvage order signage. 

The following conditions will result from termination of the public fish salvage order. 

1. Legal fishing equipment for each angler will consist of up to two rods (three with a three-pole permit) with no more than two baited hooks (single or treble) or artificial lures per line. And if two artificial lures are used, the fishing line shall not exceed six hooks.

 </figure>KDWPKansas Department of Wildlife and Parks opened Ellis City Lake to public fish salvage beginning September 2022 due to concerns surrounding low water levels. The public salvage liberalized methods by which fish could be taken (per K.A.R. 115-7-1) and removed all applicable length and creel limits (per K.A.R. 115-25-14). Currently, increased water level and improved inflow prospects have negated the utility of the public fish salvage at Ellis City Lake. Thus, the public salvage order will be rescinded coincident with removal of on-site salvage order signage. The following conditions will result from termination of the public fish salvage order. 1. Legal fishing equipment for each angler will consist of up to two rods (three with a three-pole permit) with no more than two baited hooks (single or treble) or artificial lures per line.
