Natoma American Legion Thomas J. Hogan Post 109 Color Guard and the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 109 officers, commemorated the 159th Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 27. Veterans, members, Eager Beaver 4-H Club, and volunteers posted American flags on veterans' graves at 7 cemeteries in Osborne and Russell Counties. Natoma cemetery’s Avenue of Flags were placed by Post 109, Sons of the American Legion, and Auxiliary. Memorial Day services were observed at Natoma Catholic where WWI Purple Heart recipient Thomas J. Hogan is buried; North Immanuel Lutheran where the memorial bell was rung; Paradise Mount Herman; Natoma City Cemetery Avenue of Flags. The program included Post 109 Commander William Workman and Color Guard; Welcome and Pledge of Allegiance by Jenjer Murphy, Unit 109 president; Revolutionary War to Present Time Veterans’ Archives by Shawna Dunlap, Unit 109 Chaplain. Camdyn Makings and Andreya Lyle presented poppies for each veteran named; Prayer and Message was given by Pastor Thayne Sparke, Codell Community Church. Everyone joined in singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “God Bless America”. Lucy Alexander concluded the service on trumpet playing “Taps”. A Memorial dedication for Corporal James W. Castor followed on the Post 109 lawn. The community dinner was then served by the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteers in the American Legion Hall in Natoma.

Polka night to help fund dementia, Alzheimer's services in Ellis County

The free summer meals program for any child ages 1-18 will again be offered in Hays starting June 3 and running through Aug. 8.

"We're going back to the popular drive-through method," said Jessica Younker, nutrition services director for USD 489. "It's convenient, especially for those who don't have the time to sit and eat."

The program is funded by the federal government which reimburses the Hays school district for every meal it serves. There are no income requirements.

"Last year, we served anywhere from 600 to 900 kids a day," she said.&nbsp;

"There's a big need for it, especially with the prices at the grocery store.&nbsp;

"There's a lot of kids that rely on the school meal series during the school year. This just kind of helps fill that gap over the summer with nutritious balanced meals to eat."

The meal site will be on the west side of Hays High School, 2600 E. 13th, near the gym doors.&nbsp;

Hays High has the biggest kitchen in USD 489.

"You'll see our tent out there with our staff," she said.

Breakfast and lunch are served at the same time.&nbsp;

"You'll get a hot box with a hot lunch and then a bag with cold food in it, and also a breakfast for the following day."&nbsp;

On Thursdays, participants will get four meals to cover breakfast and lunch on Fridays when the site is closed.

The children must be in the vehicle with an adult.

"That's one requirement, that we have to be able to see the child so we know the meal is going to children," Younker said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pick-up waivers are available if the child cannot be in the car.

 "Parents will be able to pick up meals without the children present, once we have that completed. Only parents can do this, not daycare providers or others," she said.

"We sometimes have teenage babysitters come through with the kids they're watching and the babysitters themselves are also eligible for the free meals."

The meal pick-up time is 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, June 3-Aug. 8.

Fort Hays State University’s Social Work Department will host a national conference on June 27 and 28 at the FHSU Memorial Union.

“On the Road to Thriving Rural Communities,” the 49th&nbsp;Annual National Institute on Social Work &amp; Human Services in Rural Areas will be offered both on campus and through Zoom.

The conference will feature a legislative panel, and keynote speakers on the topics of human trafficking, substance abuse, mental health, and more.

“This conference is a great way to learn more about diversity in rural areas in America, as well as providing human service specialists access to professional development resources through presentations,” said Leea Smarsh, 2024 Rural Conference Intern.

GREAT BEND — The Kansas Wetlands Education Center offers a monthly series to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. KWEC’s WILD programs are free of charge and don’t require registration.

On June 14 from 10-11 a.m., kids can discover what types of mammals live on the KWEC nature trail. Participants will check Sherman traps, a box-style trap to catch live small mammals. They will identify, collect data, and then release any mammals captured. In addition, participants will study some of the tracks in the area and look for any other clues mammals may have left along the trail.

On July 12 - 10-11 a.m., if it flies, crawls, jumps, or swims, kids will want to catch it during our July WILD activity. After crafting a bug catcher, armed with nets, participants will head out to the KWEC nature trail in search of insects. They will see what types of insects they catch and then identify them. After walking the trail, participants will examine and hold the KWEC classroom Vietnamese Walking Sticks, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and Giant Millipedes.

Join KWEC on select Fridays from 1-4 p.m. this summer for a free, come-and-go nature craft. Before completing the craft, attendees will participate in a quick learning activity about the craft theme. The activities are geared toward kids 5-12, but all ages are welcome.

June 14 - Seed Kaleidoscope - craft and decorate a mesmerizing kaleidoscope using seeds, beads, and other nature items for a unique display of images. June 21 - Pollinator Puddler - Celebrate Pollinator Week by creating a small dish with jewels and rocks to create a water source for bees and butterflies. July 5 - Snake Skin Suncatcher - using sheds from the KWEC snakes, create a unique suncatcher to place in the window. July 12 - Hammered Flower Banner - after selecting colorful blooms from the KWEC pollinator garden and marsh area, pound the colors onto a banner to take home!

For those who want a more immersive nature experience, KWEC is offering&nbsp;Nature Discovery Camps. Camps feature outdoor exploration, including animal and plant investigations through fun activities, nature-related crafts, and games.

For students who have completed 1st-3rd grades Registration Fee - $20 The deadline to register is June 26 Campers must bring a sack lunch. KWEC will provide snacks.&nbsp; Before and aftercare is available for an additional $10 - 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The Hays City Band will perform three concerts this summer on June 4, 11, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dreiling Theatre at Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School.

Concerts are free to attend and open to the public.

Musicians who would like to participate should attend rehearsals on May 28, 29, June 3, 10, and 17 from 7-9 p.m.  at TMP's Dreiling Theatre.

City of Hays offices closed Monday for Memorial Day

Sternberg Museum of Natural History will host another blockbuster dinosaur exhibit set to open on May 25 and run through Aug. 17.

Exhibition: Dinosaur turns back the clock 165 million years to the Jurassic Period and combines life-sized animatronic dinosaurs with educational interactive experiences.

The exhibit, which is curated by renowned working paleontologist, Thomas Williamson, was created by Stage 9 Exhibits and is distributed by Exhibits Development Group.

“I'm extremely enthusiastic about bringing this exhibit featuring a wide variety of dinosaur species and the features that allowed them to survive,” said museum director Reese Barrick. “In addition to dinosaurs, visitors will discover how early paleontologists unearthed fossils and see examples of today’s cutting-edge technology.”

Occupying a large portion of the second floor and spilling over to the main lobby, the exhibition features displays and interactive stations grouped thematically.

The exhibit comprises two main areas. The first is the “Bone Wars” era of the late 1800s, and the second focuses on the present-day, featuring fossil neutron scanning, 3D modeling, and other technologies.

Visitors will learn about early fieldwork and fossil extraction, including a recreation of a field tent complete with period tools and furnishings. Brief and informative videos tell the stories of how dinosaur fossil hunters conducted their work, how fossils were transported (including by helicopter), and which field work tools and methods have changed and which have remained the same.

The exhibit features 11 animatronic dinosaurs and provides the features of each dinosaur, including size, behavior, diet and when it lived.

Interactive displays and information highlight the structure of dinosaur eggs, jaws, skulls, and tails and how they played an important role in dinosaur behavior and survival. Cases display artifacts, such as a T-rex skull replica, and a Triceratops skull model with cutouts for size reference to a Model T car and an elephant. Through an interactive display, visitors will also learn about the function of the gizzard, an organ shared by modern chickens and some dinosaurs.

Focusing on present-day paleontology, visitors will learn about current technologies and how they are being deployed to help scientists learn more about dinosaurs.

Visitors can create changing landscapes by manipulating the sand to create peaks and valleys and the projector will create geologic features like hills and rivers in real time.

3-Finger Robotic Arm Dinosaur Egg Challenge and Interactive Video

Visitors can attempt to turn dinosaur eggs with a robotic arm. The display also features “eggs” that can be used to activate videos about the clues paleontologists look for on dinosaur eggs and the natural objects that get mistaken for fossilized eggs.

Sternberg Museum is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-6 p.m.

Russell Public Works will begin picking up tree limbs Thursday, May 23, for customers who have called in with their names and addresses. 

The Russell County Highway Department will assist city crews. They will begin picking up limbs on the east side of Fossil Street, as that is where most of the damage and tree limb piles are located following <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b0da8166-7a68-4f17-9560-71111de871ec">Sunday's storms</a>. The crews will then move to the west side of Fossil Street.

It is estimated that the pickup will take two to three weeks. 

If residents have not called to get their address on the pick-up list, they are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. 

Once the collection is complete, no more pick-ups will be made. 

The pick-up is limited to tree debris – limbs and broken trees. Other waste will not be collected.

American flags will be posted on veterans' graves by the Post and Unit with volunteers at 7 cemeteries in Osborne and Russell Counties. Natoma's Avenue of Flags will be placed by Post 109 and the Sons of the American Legion. Monday’s cemetery services will be observed at Natoma Catholic, 9:30 AM; North Immanuel Lutheran, 10 AM; Paradise Mount Herman, 10:30 AM; Natoma City Cemetery, 11 AM. The program will include Post 109 Color Guard; welcome and Pledge of Allegiance by Jenjer Murphy, Unit 109 president; Veterans will be remembered by name from the American Revolution, Civil War, War of 1812, Mexican American War, Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, Conflicts, and through Peace Times by Shawna Dunlap, Unit 109 Chaplain. Camdyn Makings and Andreya Lyle will present poppies for each veteran; Prayer and Message will be given by Pastor Thayne Sparke, Codell Community Church. Everyone will be invited to sing “My Country Tis of Thee” and “God Bless America”. Post Commander William Workman and American Legion Post 109 will present a 21 Gun Salute followed by Lucy Alexander playing “Taps”.

At 11:45 AM, Corporal James W. Castor will be remembered by his sister, Judy Castor, during a dedication of an iron bench located in front of Natoma American Legion Post 109 Hall. Corporal Castor was awarded the Silver Star of Valor, Purple Heart, and many other medals following his death by enemy fire while rescuing fellow soldiers near Quang Nam Province Vietnam, August 8, 1969. After the dedication, a traditional Memorial Day Beef and Noodle Community Dinner will be served by the American Legion Auxiliary, 12 Noon, Post 109 Hall, 520 North First Street, Natoma.

In 1918, inspired by the poem, YWCA worker Moina Michael attended a YWCA Overseas War Secretaries' conference wearing a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed over two dozen more to others present. In 1920, the National American Legion adopted it as their official memorial symbol. Each red crepe paper poppy is hand crafted by a Kansas Disabled Veteran. 100% of donations help disabled and deserving Kansas Veterans.

Any residents affected by this project will be notified by the contractor for any interruption of services.
