TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Ellis Co. RWD 1C public water supply system located in Ellis County. The advisory was issued because of a waterline leak resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the Ellis Co. RWD 1C indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Ellis Co. RWD 1C

A classic case of good versus evil is coming to the FHSU campus this month.

"Jekyll &amp; Hyde," the 1990 musical based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, will run April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in FHSU’s Felten-Start Theatre. The cast of 22 actors/singers and 18 orchestra pit members has been rehearsing since early February.

“It is a complex show, but fun with great music,” said Dr. Terry Crull, professor of music and director of Jekyll &amp; Hyde. “The music is the highlight of the show.”

The storyline of Jekyll &amp; Hyde will be familiar to film, literature, and theatre buffs. 

It follows the unfortunate life choices of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who wishes to develop a formula to cure his comatose father. Jekyll’s proposal to use a human subject (his father) to research the formula is rejected by his hospital’s board of directors.

After testing the formula on himself, Jekyll undergoes a painful transformation into Mr. Hyde, a sinister, violent man. The show contains some mature content and is recommended for ages 13 plus.

Much of the music will be familiar to those who enjoy musical theatre. Songs such as “This is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” and “Once Upon a Dream” are just a few examples.

The show poses many new production challenges for Carl Sage, assistant professor of theatre, who is tasked with making the story come to life through his set design.

 It will be the first time a projection system will be used to create large background scenes. The projection system eliminates the need for big flats that drop onto the stage.

“Whatever you do on stage must be conducive to storytelling,” Sage said. “It can be a challenge, especially for some of the more skill-heavy situations, like programming the light board, which can take hours or days to program. It’s a process. You can’t make things happen instantly.”

Crull said he is anxious to see how the sets come together. “It will be very exciting,” he said.

Main cast members include Garrett Cole, Hays, as Jekyll and Hyde; Allie Straub, Hays, as Lucy Harris; McKynlee Stecklein, Hays, as Emma Carew, Jekyll’s fiancée; and Quinton McGuire, Hays, as John Utterson, Jekyll’s friend and confidant.

FHSU’s Department of Music &amp; Theatre will round out the season’s offerings with the following events:

Classic good vs. evil coming to FHSU April 11-13

The Hays High School World Language Club is putting on an International Day event to celebrate different and diverse cultures/heritages in the Hays community, and we want&nbsp;you&nbsp;to be a part of it!

This is in honor of Lora Gallegos-Haynes, a beloved Hays High teacher who used to organize this event.

This is an open community project, so anyone who is interested can be a part of this event.&nbsp;You can bring items from your culture/heritage, food, outfits, etc.

The <a href="https://hayschamber.com/child-care-task-force-of-ellis-county">Child Care Task Force of Ellis County</a>&nbsp;is asking Ellis County residents to complete a survey on child care by April 15.

A link can be found on <a href="https://hayschamber.com/">the Chamber in Hays website</a> or the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ChildCareTaskForceOfEllisCounty">Ellis County Child Care Task Force's Facebook page</a>.

During a strategic planning session in January, the task force decided to try to better understand the county's child care needs as new centers have opened.

"We really wanted to become internally focused on what we do to support providers," Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, said.&nbsp; "The word professional kept coming up and helping you guys and gals be elevated and seen as professionals."

The task force sees child care providers as important in cultivating the community's next generation of workforce, Wasinger said.

The introductory question will take you to different subsections of the survey. The task force is looking for responses from • Parents, guardians or caregivers • Child care providers • Businesses/employers • Residents interested in supporting child care initiatives

Parents and guardians will be asked about their child care needs.

Wasinger said the survey is also self-serving because the task force is seeking how to better serve child care providers in the community.

"We need to know what you all need," Wasinger said at a recent task force meeting.

The <a href="https://heartlandcommunityfoundation.org/">Heartland Community Foundation</a>, dedicated to supporting Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties, is excited to announce the opening of its spring grant cycle. As of March 15, applications can be submitted online until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Approximately $150,000 in funding is available in this grant cycle.

To assist applicants in their efforts, the community foundation is offering three FREE grant writing workshops and lunches. To RSVP for the training, called 10 Tips for Better Grant Writing, email heartland@gscf.org.

NORTON — Work will resume this week on asphalt crack repair Kansas Department of Transportation projects in Rice and Rush counties that were paused last season due to weather concerns.

One KDOT project will be on U.S. 183 in Rush County, from the Pawnee/Rush county line to the south city limits of La Crosse. The length is 10 miles.

The work is expected to begin around April 3 starting in Rice County, to be completed around April 11. The Rush County project will follow that, with both projects done by early May, weather permitting.

During the work, traffic will be guided by a pilot car and flaggers, and motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and expect up to a 15-minute delay.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones.

Smoky Hills PBS premieres Season 6 of 'Cottonwood Connections'

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has created an ad hoc committee to focus on implementing recommendations from a national task force on lawyer well-being.

The nine-member Ad Hoc Committee for Well-Being in Law was created by Supreme Court Administrative Order&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://go.kansascourts.gov/l/Kc9VXLOpu0gntP_BAIcd7mMgBl6U44edCBW-EznCqjA">2025-CM-030</a>&nbsp;signed today by Chief Justice Marla Luckert.

“Promoting well-being in the legal profession contributes to positive outcomes and public confidence in the law and the courts,” Luckert said. “It increases job satisfaction and productivity, reduces turnover, and builds a stronger system of justice for all Kansans.”

The ad hoc committee will continue work started by the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://go.kansascourts.gov/l/Kc9VXLOpu0gntP_BAIcd7uvKEKdD0RWPdwSyikPJ21I">Kansas Task Force for Lawyer Well-Being</a>. The task force was formed after the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being released in 2017 its report,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://go.kansascourts.gov/l/Kc9VXLOpu0gntP_BAIcd7scSjKpOoDBzrsBOffN39Yc">The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change</a>.

The report highlighted surveys that found lawyers and law students were at increased risk for mental health and substance use disorders and many struggled with depression, anxiety, and stress. It then recommended strategies the legal community could use to improve lawyer well-being.

In Kansas, lawyers interested in advancing the national task force recommendations put together a task force with members representing the groups identified in the national report. One of those lawyers was then executive director of the Kansas Lawyers Assistance Program, which has a mission that overlaps the national task force recommendations.

The Kansas Lawyers Assistance Program is a source of confidential help for lawyers with alcohol, drug abuse, or mental health issues.&nbsp;

The report defines well-being in law as a continuous process of improving the health of legal community members in all areas of life: emotional, occupational, intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual.

The report gives general and specific strategies for the process. They include encouraging members to seek help, offering educational programs on well-being, building relationships with well-being experts, and fostering respect throughout the profession.

The Ad Hoc Committee for Well-Being in Law will make recommendations to the court on implementing strategies from the national report. The committee will also address other related well-being issues affecting lawyers, law students, and legal professionals.

Meryl Carver-Allmond, general counsel to the chief justice, will serve as committee chair. The committee may form subcommittees that can include noncommittee members. The committee will be supported by the Office of Judicial Administration.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Ellis County Rural Water District #1C public water supply system located in Ellis County. 

The City of Hays is not affected by this advisory.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking&nbsp;or food preparation or use bottled water.&nbsp;

• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.&nbsp;

• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.&nbsp;

• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.&nbsp;

• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The advisory took effect on&nbsp;April 2,&nbsp;2025&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

KDHE&nbsp;officials issued the advisory because of&nbsp;of a&nbsp;waterline&nbsp;leak&nbsp;resulting in a loss of pressure in the&nbsp;distribution&nbsp;system.  Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State University will host two distinguished scholars of history for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s 2025 Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Lecture, “Territorial Expansion in Nazi Europe and the United States in the 19th and 20th Centuries.”

Between 1939 and 1945, as part of their efforts to eliminate Jews from the European continent, the Nazi dictatorship removed people from the Reich they considered unworthy of being citizens because they did not fit into their vision of the racial “national community.” They forcibly displaced Jews, whom they called “undesirables,” eastward into ghettos where conditions were extremely harsh, simultaneously expanding their borders to create “living space” for “racially pure” Germans.&nbsp; 

In a much different context, the democratic United States expanded its borders westward between the 19th and 20th centuries. To free up land for its growing population, the United States violently removed Indigenous peoples, whom some Americans perceived as incompatible with national and racial ideals.&nbsp; While these two histories are distinct, by discussing them together, we can learn new things about how and why they unfolded.

Join us with two major scholars of these topics in a program designed to illuminate some phenomena common to the persecution histories of those considered “others” in society, as well as what is unique in each of these experiences.

About the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Annual Lecture Series

The Meyerhoff Lecture Series is a Campus Outreach Program of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, part of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The series was endowed by the Meyerhoff family in 1994 to honor excellence in research and foster the dissemination of scholarly work in Holocaust studies. Since 2020, the Meyerhoff Lecture has been held in partnership with a university on its campus as part of the Regional Programming Initiative. 

The mission of the Mandel Center is to ensure the long-term growth and vitality of Holocaust Studies. To do that, it is essential to provide opportunities for new generations of scholars. The vitality and the integrity of Holocaust Studies require openness, independence, and free inquiry so that new ideas are generated and tested through peer review and public debate.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission wants to remind utility customers that there are two important dates coming up that they should be aware of.&nbsp;

 First, the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers, served by Kansas Corporation Commission regulated utilities, from disconnection when temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees.

In addition, Monday is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, known as LIEAP. When the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, regulated utilities are required to offer a 12-month payment plan upon request, even if a previous payment plan has been broken. When that protection ends on Monday, failure to make arrangements or failure to adhere to an already established payment plan could result in disconnection. 

Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan.

The KCC urges all customers facing financial difficulties to act now to stay connected.
