NCK Technical College is excited to announce it will be hosting a special "Catching Up," Hays Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday, October 25, starting at 10:00 a.m. at the college's administrative building, 2205 Wheatland Ave.

NCK Tech to host "Catching Up" Hays Chamber event on Oct. 25

Calling all space adventurers! Put on your Halloween costumes and join the Hays Symphony at its annual children’s concert on Sunday, October 29, at the Fort Hays State University Beach/Schmidt Center for the Performing Arts. The free concert has become a family tradition over the past seven years, offering an afternoon of music, drama, hands-on activities, and festivities for everyone.&nbsp;

“This year the symphony decided on the theme of space”, said Cathy Drabkin, publicity chair for the group. “We commissioned Hays playwright Catherine Trieschmann to create a musical drama with the prompt of “What would happen if an alien heard the music from Earth that was sent to space on the 1977 US Voyager I spacecraft?”&nbsp;

As a result, Trieschmann has written “The Golden Record,” an original musical comedy in which six aliens travel to our solar system in search of beautiful music. The production will be directed by Erin Renard, and features middle-school students in the alien roles. The symphony’s music which accompanies the story will include selections from The Planets, by Gustav Holst, the theme from the movie E.T., and first movement from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2.

The symphony has also partnered with several FHSU departments and student groups and community organizations to offer a wide range of pre-concert activities in the lobby and the outside courtyard of Beach/Schmidt Auditorium.

FHSU students from STEM Education Club will be setting up several science education stations featuring hands-on activities with sound waves, with planetary orbits, and on the Voyager spacecraft.&nbsp; “We are so excited to share science activities and experiences with the community of Hays,” said Dr. Matthew Clay, assistant professor of teacher education at FHSU. “This is a great opportunity for our students to have a chance to experience working with so many children as they prepare for their careers as educators.”

The FHSU Science &amp; Mathematics Education Institute will offer digital planetarium shows for school-age children in the auditorium lobby. The shows require advance reservations through the symphony’s website.&nbsp;

The FHSU student chapter of the National Association of Music Educators (NAfME) is presenting Music in Orbit, a movement and music session featuring pieces performed in the concert, and offering a space-themed arts and crafts activity.&nbsp;

In addition, FHSU music education major Mackenzie Bowers and Associate Professor of Music Dr. Laura Andrews have created a comprehensive listening guide on The Planets which parents and students can use in advance of the concert to learn more about the music being performed. The guide which has been sent to general music educators throughout the region, is also available on the symphony’s website.

Pre-concert activities will also include a stringed instrument petting zoo organized by symphony musicians, a ukelele demonstration presented by Studio 809, a space-themed story hour with the Hays Public Library staff and bookmobile, a drumming circle set up by FHSU percussion students, Meet the Brass and Meet the Woodwinds sessions offered by FHSU music students, and a Halloween costume parade. The first 350 children to arrive also receive a free trick-or-treat bag provided by Werth Wealth Management.

“This event is truly a coming-together of the community,” said Drabkin. “It’s a festival of arts and science designed to delight our children with the wonders of live music and theater.”&nbsp;

The program has been made possible through a generous grant from the Heartland Community Foundation and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation that the Hays Symphony Guild received last May.

In addition, the program is supported by involvement from McDonalds of Hays, the Hays Arts Council, the Hays Public Library, the FHSU Department of Music, Werth Wealth Management, Studio 809, FHSU Science &amp; Mathematics Education Institute, USD489 Music Department, Hays Symphony musicians, and the Hays Symphony Guild.

Hays Symphony continues tradition with free space-themed concert, children’s activities

Fort Hays State University’s next Science Café will be held on Oct. 30.

On Nov. 2, a Fort Hays State University Leadership 310 team will be hosting a 3v3 basketball tournament at the Hays Recreation Commission, 1105 Canterbury. 

All the proceeds will benefit First Call for Help’s food and hygiene pantry. This serves those in need in Ellis County.

We are working on getting teams signed up right now. We are looking for businesses/groups/student organizations to join in. Teams can either fundraise their registration fee of $100/team or the business they are representing can sponsor them. Teams will be asked to fundraise additionally on top of their registration fee. 

There will be prizes for both the top fundraising team and the winner of the tournament. We plan to start check-in at 5 p.m. and games will begin by 5:30 p.m. that day. There will also be concessions available for purchase during the event.

If anyone would like to sign a team up or sponsor a team, they can contact First Call for Help at 785-623-2800.

Top fundraising team will receive an office pizza party (up to 20 people).

Winner of the basketball tournament will receive their registration fee back.

Hays Recreation Commission has graciously donated their space for the evening of the event.

Fort Hays State University's National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association will host its 3rd&nbsp;annual Soup Fest fundraiser Oct. 20 from 5-7 p.m. in the Albertson Hall Lobby. The association is a student organization in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. 

Proceeds from the event will go to offset expenses of families with children receiving services at the FHSU Herndon Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.

The clinic’s primary purpose is to provide undergraduate students in communications sciences and disorders and graduate students majoring in speech-language pathology hands-on experience providing services in speech, language, and hearing.

Soup Fest is open to the public. The cost is $10 for three samples and one bowl of soup, dessert, and drink. Attendees are encouraged to vote on their favorite soup and tour the Herndon Clinic.

“Soup Fest has been a great way to reach out to the community in a fun and friendly way, while providing awareness of the Herndon Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and fundraising for our client scholarships,” said Ciara Kern, graduate student and National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association member. “As a student, it is an exciting time to interact with the community while enjoying some wonderful soup.”

LENEXA– U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives from EPA Region 7 will present at the Great Bend City Council Meeting on Nov. 6, to provide community members with information about the Plating Inc. Superfund Site.

Over the next several months, EPA will be conducting cleanup work under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund. In April 2023, Plating Inc. was one of three Superfund sites in Kansas on the National Priorities List&nbsp; to receive funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to begin or expedite cleanup projects.

“In April, EPA Region 7 representatives traveled to Wichita to celebrate the second round of funding for Superfund sites from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said&nbsp;EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister. “That funding is now being put to work to clean up contamination in communities across our nation’s heartland.”

The Plating Inc. Superfund Site sits within the airport industrial area in Barton County, Kansas, 1½ miles west of Great Bend. An inspection by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment determined that 6,400 gallons of chromic acid was on-site in 2007, along with other acids and hydroxides. The secondary containment was inadequate and chromic acid was found to have discharged into the soil. The film reinforces the importance of seeing and approaching Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias as a community with a focus on early detection.

Individuals featured in the film include those diagnosed with dementia, their family members, physicians, nurses, and researchers.

“’Why’ addresses the barriers in recognizing and addressing early cognitive changes as well as supporting a hopeful, empowered approach to moving forward,” said Dr. Jeff Briggs, dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. “The more we all know about brain health, dementia, and Alzheimer’s, the better prepared we are in creating a supportive community.”

The film’s runtime is 37 minutes. Time will be provided afterward for questions and comments.

On Wednesday, Cottonwood Extension District will be hosting a free coyote trapping and predator calling program by Wildlife Specialist Drew Ricketts starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Hays Agricultural Research Center auditorium, 1232 240th Avenue.&nbsp;

During his program, he will discuss coyote biology, helping people to better understand their movements, vocalizations, and diet among other topics. He will also discuss tips and methods on trapping and calling coyotes including the proper use of mouth and electronic calls.

Victoria school board candidate forum set for Oct. 22

In an effort to continue bolstering leadership in Ellis County and beyond The Chamber in Hays, Kansas is currently working to secure grant funding that will allow participants to experience leadership training from the Kansas Leadership Center.

This grant offers an opportunity for area individuals, businesses and organizations to enhance their leadership skills and drive positive change.

Chamber President/CEO Sarah Wasinger said the significance of this initiative is in shaping the future of leadership in Kansas.

"Leadership is the cornerstone of progress, and the Leadership Transformation Grant empowers individuals, businesses, and organizations to become catalysts for positive change,” Wasinger said. “With Kansas Leadership Center's renowned courses and this grant's support, we are equipping Kansas leaders to tackle the challenges of our rapidly evolving world."

These courses are designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to excel in leadership roles. It's important to note that participants must attend these courses in consecutive order to maximize their leadership development.

WAKEENEY — The Smoky Hill Trail Annual Conference is just around the corner on October 20, 21, and 22.&nbsp; The conference will be held at the Trego County Historical Society Museum, 128 N. 13th Street, WaKeeney. 

On Friday, October 20, there will be a bus tour of Trego County beginning at 1:00 pm. A “meet and greet” will follow at the Commercial Building at the Trego County Fairgrounds, 13th and Russell Avenue, WaKeeney, at 4:00 pm.

Saturday, October 21, will feature speakers throughout the day, beginning at 8:30 am. The speakers and their topics include: "A Window into Time," by Garrett Seuser; "The Cartographic Roots of Colorado," by Wes Brown; "The French on the Smoky Hill in the 18th Century,” by Wade Davis; "Railroaded: The Industry that Shaped Kansas," by Leo Oliva; and "Silas Stillman Soule: From Coal Creek to Sand Creek," by Byron Strom.

The evening features a banquet at 6:00 p.m. with special speaker, Chris Herriage, discussing “Today’s Archaeology, Tomorrow’s Trails.”

Sunday, October 22, begins with coffee at 8:30 a.m. and features two more speakers beginning at 9:00 a.m. Don Rowlinson will discuss “The History of Trego County Agriculture: Before and After the Sod Busters” and Wade Davis will discuss "Smoky Hill Thompson: A Life Wild and Perilous." 

The conference will close by 12:00 noon on Sunday.

On Wednesday, October 18 Cottonwood Extension District will be hosting a free coyote trapping and predator calling program by Wildlife Specialist Drew Ricketts starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Hays Agricultural Research Center auditorium, 1232 240th Avenue, Hays.

Weight loss solutions program offered by HaysMed for 2024

The performing arts are alive and undead in Hays.

The Halloween season brings an opportunity to showcase the wide variety of performing arts and local talent in Hays with live presentations tonight, Friday and Sunday.

The Hays Arts Center is hosting a black box theatre event in the Founder's Gallery, featuring a one-act play for the spooking season.

"Cheating Death," a satirical comedy, is under the direction of Cheryl Glassman, who's directed many performances of the Hays Community Theatre.

"I'm truly excited about this performance," Glassman said. "It's quite an awesome cast. It took them time to find their characters."

There are six patients in a psychiatric hospital and the seventh character, the Angel of Death, comes for one patient but is hurried. Not all the details are in order.&nbsp;

"The patients each tell about a historical event in their life. Everyone in the audience is going to be touched in some way by these stories," Glassman said.

Other performances include two young actors in "Hansel and Gretel" and the poem "The Old Buzzard Tree" is brought to life by another peformer.

There are also readings of three different genres, each with an eerie Halloween-themed undertone.

The "Twisted Tales" are sponsored by Chemistree Tree, Lawn &amp; Landscape, Hays.

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1:15 p.m. Sunday. The evening shows start at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee is at 2 p.m. 

Tickets are $7 each for general seating.&nbsp;

Prior to the performances of ghost stories, eerie poems and tales, the audience has the opportunity to meet with representatives of performing arts groups in Hays.

"You can find out what shows they have coming up, how to get tickets, or even how to volunteer with these groups, perhaps as a set designer or something else," Glassman said.&nbsp;

"We're all one big happy family in my mind," she said.

Scheduled to participate in the performing arts open house are&nbsp;Hays High and Thomas More Prep-Marian schools, Hays Community Theatre, Fort Hays State University Encore Series, Hays High School orchestra, Hays Middle School, and the historic Fort Hays re-enactors.&nbsp;

"It's nice to bring them all together at one time, and make sure people recognize and celebrate them," said Brenda Meder, executive director of the Hays Arts Council. "There are so many entities and groups that do performing arts in this community."&nbsp;

'Twisted Tales and the Arts Alive' showcases local talent this weekend in Hays

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded boil water advisory for the cities of Ellis and Smith Center public water supply systems.

The advisories were issued because of line breaks resulting in a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

 </figure>KDHETOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded boil water advisory for the cities of Ellis and Smith Center public water supply systems.The advisories were issued because of line breaks resulting in a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Women Who Lead, formerly known as Wonder Women League, will launch their new name and their independence from the United Ways of Ellis County during a Hays Chamber Chat at 9 a.m. Friday.

The event will be at the United Way office at 12oo Chestnut St. in Hays.

Women Who Lead was founded as an all-women service organization in Ellis County under the umbrella of the United Way.&nbsp;

Women Who Lead is now becoming its own non-profit.

Free drive-thru flu shots in WaKeeney Oct. 18

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Sandy Seamone to teach two Joy of Painting classes on October 21 and 22. On Saturday, October 21, the class will paint “Sunset Creek,” and on Sunday, October 22, “The Swan.” 

Classes are held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, Logan, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.&nbsp;

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Seamone learned from the happy tree guy himself. Implementing the soft-spoken, supportive ways of her mentor, Seamone creates a classroom with a relaxing and light-hearted atmosphere. 

All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels.&nbsp;
