The Ellis County landfill will be open on Friday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no dumping 15 minutes prior to close. 

 The landfill will be closed all day on Saturday, April 19 in observance of the Good Friday holiday. 

 All other hours of operation will remain the same during this week.

Russell doctor to talk wound care on 'Doctors on Call' on Tuesday

DOWNS — The 31st annual Kansas Storytelling Festival is only a few weeks away. The Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, 2025 in Downs. 

As the “Storytelling Capital of Kansas,” the small northcentral town of Downs welcomes you to a weekend of stories and unforgettable hospitality.

This celebration of the art of storytelling promises to be an event filled with laughter, wonder, and the timeless magic of storytelling. Nationally-known festival favorites are invited, along with new voices for stories from all genres for all ages. 

Headlining storytellers are Ed Stivender, Pipppa White, Michael D. McCarty, Priscilla Howe, and Paul Strickland.

Ed Stivender was inducted into the National Storytelling Association’s Circle of Excellence in 1996. After giving up his Connecticut school teaching job, Ed has told his mostly humorous stories around the globe and has been a featured storyteller at national and international festivals.

Pippa White calls her One’s Company Productions “part theatre, part storytelling, part history.” She has performed at universities and colleges, conferences, performing arts centers, museums, libraries, and festivals in over 30 states. Audiences call them unique, captivating, and touching. One audience member said, “her performances are entertainment wrapped in history intertwined with “inspiration”.

Michael D. McCarty is a newcomer to the Kansas festival. He specializes in stories of African and African-American history and culture, multi-cultural stories, etc. Michael describes his life as: student activist, Black Panther, U.S. Army martial arts instructor, acupuncturist, world traveler, spiritual seeker, construction worker, storyteller, husband, father, crazy friend. Never a dull moment!

Priscilla Howe is primarily known as a performer for children, but she has a full repertoire of stories for grownups and older kids. She offers a disclaimer, with a little wink: "All my stories start with the seed of truth." Priscilla tours the country and abroad telling stories and giving workshops. To date, she has performed in 14 countries.

Paul Strickland always adapts his stories to whatever audience is in front of him, he loves telling stories in every imaginable environment, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools, corporate events and even two prisons. Paul was a Featured Teller: NEW VOICE at the National Storytelling Festival in 2023.

Listeners will also enjoy the Tall Tales Contest (Friday night), the local “Legends” Storytellers including Native American stories and the Master Storytellers (previous winners of three tall tales contests).

Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts and counties are offering a hazardous occupation safety training in agriculture (tractor and farm safety course) for youth on Saturday, April 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The training will take place at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave., Hoxie.

K-State Research &amp; Extension agents, along with other organizations, will teach the course, covering critical farm and machinery safety topics, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety, and more.

The U.S. Department of Labor requires youth ages 14–15 to complete this safety training to work on a farm for someone other than their parents—and in some cases, even when working on a family farm.

Pre-training assignments must be completed before April 26. Registration fee: $10 (due by Tuesday, April 22).

FHSU’s Department of Music and Theatre will present its seventh-annual FHSU New Music Festival Friday and Saturday, April 25-26. The Saturday concert will present an evening of the music of Dr. Chen Yi and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center. Complimentary tickets will be available in the lobby 30 minutes before each concert or in advance at the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Dr. Chen is a prolific composer who blends Chinese and Western traditions, transcending cultural and musical boundaries. She is an internationally sought-after composer whose works are performed worldwide.

As part of the New Music Festival, under the direction of Dr. Kristin Pisano, Dr. Chen will give a lecture entitled “My Compositions Inspired by Chinese Folk Music” on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Malloy Hall, room 115, on the FHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.&nbsp;

The evening performance on Saturday will feature the world premiere of Chen Yi’s “Remember” for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello. This work was commissioned by the FHSU New Music Ensemble, an ensemble of FHSU music faculty who share a passion for the music of living composers.

The annual FHSU New Music Festival aims to engage, educate, and inform the community about new music.

“We are so excited that Chen Yi will serve as composer in residence for the 2025 festival, and we eagerly anticipate the premiere of ‘Remember,’” Pisano said.&nbsp;

Performers at this concert are Brian Buckstead, violin; Brent Williams, violin; Ben Cline, cello; Gustavo do Carmo, piano; Hilary Shepard, flute; Kristin Pisano, clarinet; Luke Helker, percussion; the FHSU Wind Ensemble, and the Hays High Chamber Singers.

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakely of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Magic of Painting classes on April 26 and 27.

On Saturday, April 26, the class will paint a Kevin Hill-inspired painting “Out in the Valley,” and on Sunday, April 27 the class will paint the Bob Ross-inspired “Night Ocean.” 

Classes are held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main Street, Logan, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

This class offers a fun and easy approach to creating a beautiful painting. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day. All supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. 

Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Stamp Out Hunger mail carrier food drive Saturday

The City of Hays is notifying residents of delays in generating monthly water bills due to a technical issue impacting a third-party data service provider.

The issue, which originated outside city control, has temporarily affected the city's internal billing processes.

According to Director of Finance Kim Rupp, the city was first notified of the issue by their external service provider last week.

The vendor handles data services critical to the city's ability to create and distribute monthly water billing statements.

“The problem arose unexpectedly with our vendor’s internal systems, which has prevented us from generating water bills on schedule this month,” Rupp said. “We’re in continuous communication with the vendor, and they've assured us they are working urgently toward a solution.”

City officials emphasized that while they expect a resolution soon, no exact timeline can currently be guaranteed.

The vendor continues efforts to rectify the technical malfunction and has indicated significant progress, but the precise completion date remains uncertain.

“Unfortunately, the nature of this issue means our hands are tied until our vendor completes their repairs,” Rupp said. “We appreciate our residents’ patience and understanding as we work through this unexpected situation.”

Residents may have already noticed their water bills did not arrive at their usual time this month.

The city typically sends out billing statements regularly throughout the month, and the current delay has impacted a significant number of accounts.

Rupp noted that while new bills cannot currently be generated or paid, residents who previously received their bills can still make payments using regular methods, including online, mail, or in-person options.

“The issue does not affect bills already sent out prior to this issue,” Rupp said. “If you have an existing bill, please continue to pay that bill normally.”

The City Clerk’s Office and Finance Department will resume processing and mailing of new water bills immediately upon restoration of the vendor’s services.

Once residents receive their delayed billing statements, they can pay using the standard payment methods without additional steps required.

City officials expressed regret for any inconvenience this issue may cause and remain committed to keeping residents informed of any updates regarding the timeline and resolution.

“We sincerely apologize to our residents for this disruption in our normal billing processes,” Rupp said. “This issue highlights our reliance on certain external providers and the impact these unforeseen events can have. We remain committed to providing timely information as we receive updates from the vendor.”
