A Downtown Hays Tradition continues this Saturday. It’s time for some good ol’ fashioned, brick-and-mortar shopping during the 2020 Bazaar on the Bricks Sidewalk Sale! The sale runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain or shine) on Main Street and beyond.

Many events have had to adapt or cancel, and this event is no different. Downtown Hays Development Corporation (DHDC), believes that by adjusting just a little, our community can still enjoy a fun and safe Sidewalk Sale. This year, the only vendors shoppers will find along city streets are those who already call Downtown home. By limiting the number of outside merchants, DHDC hopes to encourage physical distancing and allow plenty of room for businesses and visitors to spread out.&nbsp;

“DHDC has put significant thought into the safety of business owners and customers alike while planning this event,” Allie Glidewell DHDC Director of Events and Operations said. “The streets will feel a little more empty than usual, but it’s done intentionally to keep our community safe and healthy.”

Also to ensure best safety practices, the Bazaar will not offer kid's crafts and activities this year. Shoppers will also find some participating stores have opted to keep their sales indoors.

Though the event might look different than last year, the Downtown merchants are excited to offer you deals and steals on products from clothing and accessories to discounts on drinks and art classes.

“I have visited with a lot of our business owners and they realize the importance of physically distancing but socially connecting, and feel the sidewalk sale is a great way to do both,” Glidewell said. “This kind of gives us all the opportunity to start fresh. Out with summer products, and in with new trendsetting fall items.”

DHDC requests the publics' help to ensure the safety of all participants and asks that vehicles not be parked in the public parking stalls located along Main Street between 8th and 12th streets after 5am. Some side streets, including parts of 10th and 11th Street, will also be closed, so please be mindful of the Hays Police Department's cones.

&nbsp;Under the Downtown Pavilion, more than 20 Downtown Hays Market vendors will be ready to greet you with local produce, handcrafted baked goods, and artisan products for every taste, style, and recipe. Normal hours of the market are 7:30 to 11:00 am but for this event only, they will also be available from 7:00am to 1:00pm while supplies last.&nbsp;

Bazaar on The Bricks Sidewalk Sale set for Saturday

Habitat for Humanity announced in a letter to its volunteers Thursday it will be closing the Hays ReStore immediately and indefinitely.

According to the letter, after receiving information from Habitat for Humanity National concerning COVID-19 and visiting with the local Habitat director and the security member from its local board, the decision was made to close the store.

The ReStore closed during the statewide shutdown and only reopened to the public at the beginning of July.&nbsp;

All proceeds from the store support the mission of Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing, advocate for fair and just housing policies, and provide training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

First Call for Help of Ellis County, which provides crisis assistance, service coordination, and education to the most vulnerable populations in Ellis County announced this week it was awarded a $3,000 Heartland Community Foundation Immediate Needs Grant.

The grant will increase our assistance funds, which helps low-income households in four categories: rental assistance, utility assistance, food assistance, and diaper assistance.

&nbsp;“We are grateful for Heartland Community Foundation’s investment in our assistance program, which will allow us to serve more individuals and families in crisis.” said Linda Mills, Executive Director. “Without the support from the Heartland Community Foundation, First Call would not be in a position to meet the increased need, especially for those who are financially stressed due to the pandemic.

Since 2017, Heartland Community Foundation has built stronger communities and helped donors make a difference through charitable giving in Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties. Each year, the foundation distributes thousands of dollars back to our region through community grants.&nbsp;

First District congressional candidate Tracey Mann will hold a meet and greet at Astra Bank, 1100 Fort, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. 

He will be joined by Mary Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight Eisenhower, at the campaign event.&nbsp; On Monday, Mary endorsed Tracey saying, "Tracey Mann embodies all the traits that my grandfather, President Eisenhower valued in public servants – honesty, integrity and working hard for the people you serve. BUNKER HILL–&nbsp;The Heartland Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $1,500 to support their literacy leadership initiative.

The literacy leadership initiative is an effort from Smoky Hills PBS to engage and inspire children to be ready and eager to learn.&nbsp; One component of literacy leadership is the First Book Club, in which we give free books to children enrolled in Head Start.&nbsp; With these funds, more than 100 children in Trego, Rooks and Ellis counties who are enrolled in Head Start will receive books during the 2020-21 school year. For some, these books will be the only ones that they own. The goal of providing these books is to encourage parents to read with their children regularly.

“Smoky Hills PBS is dedicated to offering curriculum-based media to meet the needs of today’s kids, and the First Book Club takes that one step further,” said Haley Gagnon, Special Event Coordinator for Smoky Hills PBS. “Not only do we provide educational content through PBS KIDS programming, but we are also putting educational materials in children’s hands, providing them the tools they will need for a lifelong love of learning!”

Smoky Hills PBS grant will help distribute books to children

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;Malinda Walker, Smoky Hills PBS membership director, has announced her retirement from Smoky Hills PBS at the end of July.&nbsp; Walker has been with Smoky Hills PBS 28 years, serving as the Membership Director since 1992.

“Malinda has made a huge impact within the communities we serve in central and western Kansas,” said Michael Quade, Smoky Hills PBS interim general manager, “She has not just brought members to our station but turned those members into friends. That’s what she has done throughout her impressive 28-year career, left a strong legacy, and her kindness and smile that our members turned to throughout the years is going to be greatly missed!”

“I have been blessed to be able to work for Smoky Hills PBS for the past 28 years where I have built some of the most memorable relationships,” said Walker.&nbsp; “I want to thank the Smoky Hills PBS members, volunteers, staff, and board for giving me the opportunity to serve them for almost three decades.”

Walker added that she is looking forward to doing a little traveling and enjoying her grandkids during her retirement.

Smoky Hills PBS membership director announces retirement

WICHITA — Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 3,700 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for spring 2020.

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

NW Kan. students earn distinction at Wichita State University

COLBY — Students will have access to personal protection equipment and follow new protocols when classes begin Aug. 17 at Colby Community College. It will be the first time the campus is open to the general student population since CCC abruptly halted face-to-face classes on March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

 <li>A modified academic calendar to end face-to-face classes before the Thanksgiving break.</li><li>Installing&nbsp;145 contactless hand sanitizers campus-wide.</li><li>Installing 55 contactless soap dispensers across campus.</li><li>Providing every face-to-face student and employee with at least five washable cloth masks.&nbsp;</li><li>Providing every employee and student with two bottles of hand sanitizer.</li><li>Providing sanitizing wipes in every classroom and dorm room.</li><li>Providing disposable masks in every classroom.</li><li>The installation of several mobile plexiglass barriers across campus.</li><li>Posting more than 120 signs from the Centers for Disease Control to encourage social distancing, proper hygienic techniques, and other information to reduce the possible transmission of the virus.</li><li>Ordering nine electric-static cleaner dispensers. Every custodian has one for their respective buildings, as well as the fleet director to use for sanitizing buses and vehicles.</li><li>Staggering schedules to reduce the number of students in the cafeteria at one time.</li>

RUSSELL — The final performances of Ad Astra Music Festival’s 2020 virtual season take place this weekend. The festival continues to bring outstanding music to its audience by streaming performances free of charge on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/adastramusicfestival">Facebook page</a>. Music lovers from across the globe can enjoy these final concerts without ever having to leave their homes.&nbsp;

First, on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 pm CDT, Ad Astra presents a performance by the High School and Community Virtual Choirs.

 Ad Astra is proud to have given high school students from around the world the opportunity to perform a cappella pop and jazz arrangements in small groups. Over the course of two weeks, the students were led by industry professionals to explore the styles, trends, and approaches to this genre. 

When asked about her experience with this program, Caitlin Leiker, a senior at Hays High School, said “The A Cappella Intensive was such a fun and engaging learning experience! I feel like Ad Astra is really rising above the odds by finding new ways to overcome our world’s circumstances through collaborative projects such as this. I know I can speak for the other participants by saying how much we appreciate the time and effort that went into it. After participating in other virtual attempts to recreate the choir experience, Ad Astra provided something the others didn’t—connection.”

Following the High School Virtual Choir, the Russell Community Choir will sing the finale to the night’s performance. Tune in to be inspired by the next generation of musicians.

Finishing off the 2020 virtual season on Saturday, July 24, at 7:30 pm CDT, Ad Astra presents “Trudy Furney Opera: A Sneak Peak.” We commissioned composer Anna Pidgorna and librettist Maria Reva to create an opera about the life of beloved Russell High School art teacher Trudy Furney.

The opera will be premiered in full next year at Prairiesta, but this year Ad Astra is giving its audience a sneak peak that provides a look at their creative process, complete with interviews and sketches, and culminating with a workshop performance of scenes from the opera. 

Katelyn Mattson-Levy, set to play Trudy herself, said, “The more I learn about the life of Trudy, the more I learn to love the woman behind the stories. Her legacy is still fresh in the minds and hearts of students and her community, and this opera is a portrait of those memories.”&nbsp; Don’t forget to watch the exciting finale to our 2020 season!

Hays High senior to perform with Ad Astra Virtual Choir Friday

A local job fair has been a topic for several months as several local employers are hiring. With COVID-19 concerns, Grow Hays, KansasWorkd Hays, Work Hays and Big Creek Crossing have been brainstorming for alternatives to the typical job fair event.&nbsp;

In our discussions, we came up with a county-wide event that allows employers to remain at their businesses and abide by their rules regarding how applications are accepted. The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.&nbsp;

Employers interested in participating will send information to be compiled and promoted via websites, social media, news articles, emails, etc..&nbsp; A "map" of all participating employers will be created and made available to job seekers. Job seekers can either apply online or go to the employer during the event to apply. &nbsp;

Business sign-up deadline for Ellis Co. Job Fair is Thursday

The Hays Masonic Lodge, in Partnership with the Kansas Masonic Foundation, is raffling off a restored 1959 Chevy El Camino.  The car will be showcased at Hays Chevrolet from Wednesday through Friday and downtown Saturday morning, but the ticket sales run until next March. 

The cost of the ticket is $20, with $15 from each ticket sold by Hays Lodge returning to Ellis County. Tickets are available at Hays Chevrolet, downtown on Saturday, online at <a href="https://kansasmasonic.foundation/">https://kansasmasonic.foundation/</a> (please put Hays in the comment), or from members of the Hays Lodge 195, who can be contacted by calling (785) 625-3127, or on Facebook.

Over the four years that this statewide raffle has been held, $750,000 has been redistributed to local Lodges who then use the money for projects in their communities. For Hays Masonic Lodge #195, that means donations to the Community Assistance Center, the Firefighters Relief Association, to help them buy and display Hays' first fire truck, and to help fund a free cancer screening that is scheduled for August, along with other charitable projects that they do throughout the year.

Admission is free, and equipment will be provided.&nbsp; The KWEC is located 10 miles northeast of Great Bend along Kansas Highway 156 at Cheyenne Bottoms. Most of the activities will be outdoors. CDC guidelines will be followed, and events are subject to change, depending on COVID-19 conditions.&nbsp; Drop-In STEM–&nbsp;Friday, July 24, noon to 4:30 p.m. Roller coasters, bubbles, water balloons, sunshine, and snakes – all vital components for having a great summer. If you have a concern that your child may have a developmental delay or be in need of special education services, call for a free developmental screening. 

Children from ages birth to school age that live in Ellis or Rush Counties are eligible to be screened. Speech, Language, vision, hearing, thinking, self-help, behavior and motor development will be checked.

The screenings will be held on Friday, August 14th and Friday August 28th. 

Call Hays Area Children’s Center at 785-625-3257 to set up a free developmental screening appointment for your child.

These developmental screenings are offered monthly and sponsored by the Hays Interagency Coordination Council and USD 489.

Ellis High School announces 2020 scholarship winners

Hays High School has set its graduation for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, outside of the school.

A stage will be set up facing the student parking lot. There will be a small tent for parents who wish to set closer to the stage and also another small tent set up for guests with special needs who will need to be in the shade.

All others guests are asked to sit in the student parking area. They can bring their own chairs from home or use chairs that have been loaned to the school by the Wild West Festival committee.

Martin Staub, HHS principal, strongly encouraged families to sit together, but to social distance from other families.

The students will be asked to wear masks during the ceremony and their chairs will be spaced for social distancing. Guests are encouraged to wear masks, but they are not required.

The ceremony will be projected onto a large outdoor screen for those sitting in the parking lot. The graduation will also be live streamed on the <a href="http://www.hayshighindians.com/">HHS website</a>.

Parking attendants will be on-hand to direct traffic. Straub said he thought the high school will have plenty of room to seat all of the guests and accommodate parking.

HHS will be graduating about 175 students this year. During past graduations, HHS has hosted as many as 2,000 guests at ceremonies at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

However, Straub said he doubted that many people would attend the July 25 ceremony. He speculated some family members and friends will chose to watch the ceremony via live stream.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the HHS gym A. If this happens, the school will be forced to restrict the number of guests for each student to no more than four.&nbsp;

"If we have to, we will set up in gym A if a storm comes through," Straub said. "We have become very flexible in the las five months. We’ll figure it out."

Seniors should have received an email with details of the graduation. Anyone who has questions, can call HHS at 785-623-2600.

Project Graduation will continue as scheduled on the evening of graduation.

The event will be open to students and their parents. Much of the event will be staged outside, weather permitting, Straub said.

"I am confident if we have a nice starry night, we will have that outside," he said. "It is good for safety and will add to the atmosphere to mark historically what these kids went through."

 <li>Commencement will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020 on the campus of HHS near the front of the school on the student parking lot side of the building.</li><li>We will practice on Friday, July 24 at 9:00 a.m. at HHS.&nbsp; Meet at the black chairs at the front HHS main entrance. You do NOT need to bring your cap and gown to practice.&nbsp; Please be on time!</li><li>On Saturday before commencement, be at the HHS Commons/Gym A area by 9:15 a.m. Since we did not get to take Class of 2020 picture as planned in the spring, let’s take this last opportunity to get this done.&nbsp; It will be a nice keepsake for you. Parking may be limited so plan accordingly.</li><li>Graduation day dress… we can’t control the weather but plan for it to be hot.&nbsp; We encourage you to dress cool, yet appropriate, for the nice program that it will be.&nbsp; Gentlemen, a collared shirt is most appropriate.</li><li>Have you tried on your maroon cap and gown? Hang it up to reduce the wrinkles and be careful to use a COOL iron if your choose to iron it. Only National Honor Society stoles and Honor Cords should be worn.&nbsp; If you decorate your hat, keep it high school appropriate.</li><li>If you haven’t already done so, email Tammy Stewart, HHS Registrar (<a href="mailto:tstewart@usd489.com" target="_blank">tstewart@usd489.com</a>), where to send your final academic transcript.</li><li>Did you receive a scholarship this year?&nbsp; Send the organization, family, institution a “thank you” note.&nbsp; It matters!</li><li>Your HHS Diploma will be given to you after the program, it will not be in the maroon cover that you receive when you cross the stage (don’t panic when you see that the cover does not have the diploma).</li><li>The Project Graduation “Peace of Mind” (POM) Agreement must be signed and given to Mr. Jerett Pfannenstiel to participate. Project Graduation starts at 9:00 p.m.;&nbsp;let’s have 100% participation!  </ol>Ceremony Site Arrangement:<ol>
 <li>Attached are two maps of HHS in an attempt to help you understand our plan for the day.</li><li>We have hired parking managers who will help fill the HHS front and back parking lots and several grass areas on campus. Please park where they ask you to park.</li><li>A professional stage with quality sound has been secured for the event. See map’s yellow box for location.</li><li>We have rented a 40’ x 60’ tent for parents &amp; HHS staff (see blue box labeled “Parents”) in an attempt to provide some shade. ONLY parents/guardians/HHS staff will be allowed to sit here. Obviously, parents/guardians aren’t required to sit here; we’re just trying to provide you the second best (graduates get best seats) area to view the event with shade.</li><li>We have rented a 20’ x 40’ tent for our HHS Staff and guests with special needs because of age or other physical impairment (see blue box labeled “Special Needs”). Please, ONLY the person with special needs should sit in this area.</li><li>All other guests will sit on chairs in the parking lot.&nbsp; We are borrowing over 1000 chairs from the Wild West Festival folks (THANK YOU WWF!) and they will be available for guests to place in a manner they are most comfortable with regarding social distancing.&nbsp;&nbsp;We STRONGLY encourage everyone to social distance between families but also understand that your family will want to sit together.&nbsp; We will not “police” this but beg you to cooperate with one another and keep distance between families.</li><li>Graduates and guests are certainly welcome and encouraged to wear masks but are not required to do so.</li><li>Please feel free to bring your own folding chair if you worry the WWF chairs will not meet your needs; we are limited in the number that will be available.&nbsp; We will have the guest seating area cordoned off beginning Friday morning… you’re welcome to check out the setup if you like.</li><li>You’re encouraged to bring an umbrella for shade.&nbsp; Please do not obstruct the view of the stage for others. We’ve been asked whether families can set up “shade tents” in the parking lot for family members.&nbsp; Yes, that is fine as long as you do not obstruct view of the stage. If you set up a shade tent, do so around the outside parameter of the roped-off guest seating area.</li>
 </ol>Inclement Weather:<ol>
 <li>It’s July in Hays, KS, so we like our odds, but we must be prepared for inclement weather on the day of the event.&nbsp; Here’s the hard part…</li><li>If stormy weather requires a change of plans, the alternate site for the ceremony will be in our HHS Gym A.</li><li>If Gym A is used, we will have to limit the number of guests, for each graduate, who can attend in person. Each graduate would be given the same number of tickets and a ticket would be required for each person to enter.&nbsp; We will work with the Ellis County Health Department in determining the number of tickets per graduate if plan B is needed. Whether the ceremony is inside or outside, the ceremony will be livestreamed.</li><li>If Gym A is used, the number allowed to attend will be less than the facility capacity to allow for social distancing.&nbsp; We will STRONGLY encourage all attendees to wear a mask.</li><li>I’ve never felt the need to pray for good hot and dry Kansas weather during the last week in July in Hays, KS&nbsp;until this year.</li>

Hays High sets outdoor graduation for July 25

Folks, our annual pancake feed and raffle was postponed just like many activities this year. 

Guess what, we still have all the prizes and all of the food and we are ready to have some fun. 

We decided to have a Cruise Main for Pancakes. 

The plan is to have a drive thru to get your meals and to buy chances on the raffle. We then are planning a live video to have the drawing.

STOCKTON — The Rooks County Free Fair board convened Tuesday evening to discuss the fate of the 2020 fair. 

  This difficult decision was not taken lightly.

 The board weighed the circumstances of safety, cancellation of event partners, manpower to operate, and the increase in area COVID-19 cases.

  The board voted 15-6 to hold a 4-H Fair with ALL 4-H to be judged, along with a Livestock Auction. 

All other events and vendors are cancelled. 

 The Rooks County Free Fair has a rich history of being one of the best county fairs in the state.  We wish to continue this tradition as we move forward and look to the future of the 142nd fair.

The Downtown Hays Market and Breathe Coffee House are partnering together to host a food drive benefiting families in need in Ellis County. 

Breathe is currently distributing boxes to these families twice a month and need your help to continue their efforts.
