Bob Dole memoir featured in Ike's Book TALK program

Wednesday, May 13 will be the last day of school for HMS.&nbsp;

 Information regarding what is due for school work for next week was sent to students Friday morning. &nbsp;

Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15 will be the assigned iPad check-in days for HMS students.

&nbsp;The process for iPad check-in will also include students dropping off any library book, classroom reading book, text books, calculator or other item that may have been checked out to them over the course of the year.&nbsp; 

The iPad check-in will take place on the west side of HMS which will allow parents to park in the West parking lot.

The staff also respectively requests only your student go through the check-in process as the school does not have room for extra people around the check-in area. 

Students will also receive any award they may have achieved over the year.&nbsp; The Falcon Parent Squad has purchased a snoball coupon for every student to receive as they turn-in their iPad.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Here are the iPad collection times for HMS students.&nbsp; The school asks you please try to make the time assigned; however, if you can’t make it due to work reasons, they have a time reserved time at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. 

The school asks you please only use the 5:30 p.m. time if you can’t get your student to their assigned time.&nbsp; As a reminder, the drop off is for all HMS students according to their last name.

"I have no doubt, students will want to go to see friends, however, in order to manage the guidelines we need to adhere to, we need students to refrain from grouping together or spending time trying to visit," Principal Tom Albers said.

This process is designed to get in and out of the school parking lot as fast as possible.&nbsp; In the event of adverse weather, the process will change to a drive-through process that will be evident as you enter the west parking lot.

USD 489Wednesday, May 13 will be the last day of school for HMS.&nbsp; Information regarding what is due for school work for next week was sent to students Friday morning. &nbsp;Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15 will be the assigned iPad check-in days for HMS students.&nbsp;The process for iPad check-in will also include students dropping off any library book, classroom reading book, text books, calculator or other item that may have been checked out to them over the course of the year.&nbsp; The iPad check-in will take place on the west side of HMS which will allow parents to park in the West parking lot.The staff also respectively requests only your student go through the check-in process as the school does not have room for extra people around the check-in area. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we begin transitioning to full
operation.&nbsp;

 All riders are requested to
wear a face mask when on the bus.&nbsp; 

ACCESS
will be taking reservation calls on May 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for rides
beginning on May 11.

Starting May
11 from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. dispatch lines will be open.&nbsp; Rides may be booked up to two weeks in
advance.

&nbsp;ACCESS Transportation will continue
to take every precaution to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19
pandemic.&nbsp; For the safety of our staff,

Ike's (Virtual) Book Club to feature Bob Dole

In response to the governor’s recent Executive Order No. 20-29, “Ad Astra: A Plan to Reopen Kansas," the City of Hays is reopening all city playgrounds, shelters and the dog park. 

Restroom facilities will remain closed at this time. Due to gathering size limitations, the Parks Department will not be accepting shelter reservations. It is the responsibility of park users to follow all state orders regarding social distancing, gathering size limitations and public health guidelines.

Forsyth Library at Fort Hays State University is joining with libraries across the nation to document the historical impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global health crisis on individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and communities.&nbsp;

The Library is seeking stories and file submissions from individuals from the FHSU and Ellis County communities for inclusion in the university archive. These submissions will be made available as primary resources for historical and research purposes, exhibits, and public dissemination.&nbsp;

Submissions might include experiences with the stay-at-home order, social distancing, self-quarantine, online education, working remotely and other local effects of the pandemic.&nbsp;

Similar primary source collections have been gathered by libraries during times of great community impact such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, wars, and recessions. They serve as primary research material for many disciplines in the present and for the future.&nbsp;

Please consider submitting your real-life stories to capture the local experience during this unprecedented time and document it for posterity. The USD 489 grab-and-go meal program will resume on Monday.&nbsp;

The program had to be suspended this week after a USD 489 employee tested positive for COVID-19.&nbsp;

Civic organizations as well as local restaurants stepped up to provide free or discounted meals for children while the USD 489 program was suspened.

USD 489 to resume meal program on Monday

MANHATTAN – Each year Kansas Farm Bureau’s Foundation for Agriculture awards scholarships to college students studying in fields that benefit agriculture and rural Kansas. Forty-two recipients received $25,000 in scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.

Over the past decade, the foundation has awarded more than $325,000 in scholarships.

“We’re investing in students today to ensure they become tomorrow’s leaders,” says KFB President and Foundation Chair Rich Felts.

Max Harman, McPherson County, was awarded $1,000 for the Frank and Helen Bernasek Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund.Allison Smith, Johnson County, received $1,000 for the K-State Agricultural Communications and Journalism Scholarship.

Colt Sutterby, Bourbon County, is the winner of the $500 Godfrey and Emma Bahr Miller Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund for students attending a college in Kansas and majoring in a subject related to agronomy and conservation.

Kinsey Griffith, Trego County, was awarded $500 for the DeWitt Ahlerich Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund.

Eight students received scholarships to Kansas technical colleges. They are Sydnee Beal, Harper County; Lane Berkenmeier, Wabaunsee County; Kyle Frederking, Lincoln County; Gage Harding, Neosho County; Joel Kennedy, Jackson County; Andrea Price, Butler County; Daniel Romero, Wichita; and Devin Simmonds, Doniphan County.

Four $1,000 KFB scholarships were awarded to juniors and seniors enrolled in Kansas State University’s college of agriculture and majoring in a subject related to agriculture. NW Kan. students earn Kan. Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships

A 1976 documentary showcasing rural life in America with Hays as a subject will be broadcast this weekend and featured on the Hays Arts Council website as a way to help bring people together, even if remotely, after the cancellation of the annual Spring Art Walk.

"I really wanted to find something special to provide the community during what was supposed to have been our Spring Art Walk weekend, a time of such wonderful community connections,"&nbsp;said Hays Arts Council Executive Director Brenda Meder.

"To provide a little distraction, revel in nostalgia and demonstrate that things change and, as a community, we have always adapted to the change that, and we will again, the Hays Arts Council has acquired the rights from&nbsp;Radio Television Suisse for both the television and screening rights to the 1976 documentary on Hays, Kansas entitled 'A Quiet America,' " she said.

Meder said broadcasting the film and its 2015 sequel was important to make it accessible to as many people as possible.

With the assistance of the Fort Hays State University's Tiger Media Network, the film will air on both area cable systems on Eagle channel 17 and Nex-Tech channel 102 at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

"My primary concern has been that the films be accessible to our older citizens, the ones to whom this may mean the most — and will hopefully be a source of joy and entertainment and memories," Meder said.&nbsp;

The film will also be made available on-demand on the council's website in the days following the broadcast.

The film was previously shown in 2017 by the council, but with recent events, Meder said she thought the look back at Hays would be particularly poignant.

"After seeing the enthusiasm for Hays’ recent 'dragging Main' event and seeing how much everyone enjoyed the nostalgia it generated, we were reminded of the 'dragging Main' scenes in that ’76 documentary," she said in a recent Facebook post, which also gave a little history of the project.

Film producers at the time wanted to show a glimpse of small-town American life at the time of the U.S. bicentennial.

Multiple sites were visited before Hays was selected.

"For several weeks in the spring of ‘76, a Swiss production team led by Jean-Jacques Legrange and Marc Schindler traveled the streets of Hays, discovered its history, met its people, and visited churches, businesses, bingo halls, VFW dinners, livestock auctions, newspaper, radio and television stations, even spending a little time with the locals 'dragging Main,' " Meder said.

The film was first shown domestically by the council in 2017 — almost 40 years after it was shown in Europe.

A companion piece — "Back to Hays," filmed by Schindler in 2015 — will accompany the original film.

A Hays company is giving Hays residents an opportunity to show their community pride and help the United Way COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Jodi&nbsp;Brazda of Blue Feather Design Group in Hays is taking orders for T-shirts. All of the proceeds will go to the United Way.

"I thought my husband is still working, and I am working at my job full time," Brazda&nbsp; said. "There are so many people who are not working and are&nbsp; not able to feed their kids with the school program shut down. I felt strongly. I felt this was a perfect means to do something that could be substantial.

"The community has rallied around so well. I am so excited about it," she said.

The United Way Community Relief Fund is providing $500 mini-grants to Ellis County nonprofits that need extra funding to operate their agencies or provide assistance in the community related to COVID-19, said Erica Berges, United Way of Ellis County executive director.

The Untied Way has raised&nbsp;$7,650 and has distributed&nbsp;$2,494 in grants. Some of the agencies funded thus far have included First Call for Help, which has seen an increase in requests for food from its food pantry, and&nbsp; KVC, which is using the funding to purchase additional cleaning supplies to keep its patients safe, Berges said.

Berges said she anticipates the need for the relief funds will increase as the governor's moratorium on evictions and utility shutoffs ends.
