The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented limitations, including the operation of Safe Ride.&nbsp; Safe Ride has not been operational during the last seventeen months due to the Federal Transit Administration's requirements that all passengers on public transportation must wear a face mask.&nbsp; 

“Under the circumstances, the Safe Ride bus concept simply does not work under the pandemic. The necessary temporary closure must transition to an alternative that can work in these challenging times,"&nbsp; said Jerry Michaud, President of DSNWK. DSNWK: Safe Ride in state of transition

The Courtney-Spalding Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an exhibition of Santa Fe Trail paintings by Cally Krallman from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday in the Hays Arts Council Annex in conjunction with the Hays Arts Council’s Fall Art Walk. The exhibit also will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Santa Fe Trail, which begins in Independence, Mo., and ends in Santa Fe, N.M., is commemorating its 200th anniversary this year. In 1910 the NSDAR marked the 800-mile Trail with 23 monuments. Nineteen monuments remain.

A native of Goodland, Krallman lives in Topeka, and began work on the Santa Fe series in 2015 seeking out “inspirational scenes and documenting them with photographs or studies,” she wrote in an email.&nbsp;

Pieces in the current exhibit are owned by private collectors.

Krallman will be awarded the Kansas DAR Women in the Arts Recognition, recognizing and honoring a woman who has exhibited excellence in her chosen genre, at the KSDAR State Meeting in September.

DAR: Santa Fe Trail paintings will be on exhibit in Hays

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, have announced the 49th annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Municipal Park.&nbsp;

Oktoberfest Hays also announced the traditional raising of steins and wearing of lederhosen will be part of the 2021 event. The free admission event will feature two days filled with German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing, a cornhole tournament, kids activities and more.&nbsp;

Registration is still open for vendors to become an integral part of a longstanding Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. In addition, the event provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.&nbsp;

 The presentation will focus on the history of Sister Cities International and its impact within the people-to-people programs around the world. Robertson-Lopez will discuss citizen diplomacy and how it affects local politics, international relations and more.

Dr. Robertson-Lopez is the vice chair/chair-elect of the Sister Cities International board of directors. She began her involvement with Sister Cities while serving two terms on the Santa Fe, New Mexico city council and six years as the mayor pro tempore. She earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. at New Mexico State University.&nbsp;

Currently, Robertson-Lopez is the executive director of the New Mexico Children’s Foundation.&nbsp;

First Call for Help of Ellis County will have an open house and ribbon cutting on Tuesday to celebrate the official completion of its First Step Housing Project, 607 E. 13th.

The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m., said Linda Mills, First Call’s executive director. Parking is available on Montgomery Street.

The $250,000 project will provide transitional housing for up to eight individuals in need of housing for up to six months at a time. First Call is currently accepting applications for the first residents.

Those individuals must be residents of Ellis County, must pass drug and alcohol screening, must have no felony convictions for violent crimes, and must be “committed to striving for stability in future housing,” Mills said. All will be expected to hold jobs and to complete an online “financial literacy” course provided by the FDIC.

The First-Step Housing Project features four bedrooms, each with a private handicapped-accessible bathroom, and a common kitchen and laundry area.

The project, which took six years from planning to completion, is the first ever of its kind in Ellis County, Mills said. Applications are available by calling (785) 623-2800.

Donors contributing $5,000 and more include the Schmidt Foundation, Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Ellis County Ministerial Alliance, Union Pacific Foundation, Ellis County Cares Fund, United Methodist Foundation, Heartland Community Foundation, Ellis County Bar Association, and two anonymous donors.&nbsp;

Mills emphasized that it was the “countless individual donors who contributed between $5 and $5,000" that helped First Call achieve its $250,000 goal.

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system and affected customers located on Washington Street, between Fourth&nbsp;Street and Seventh&nbsp;Street. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Ellis indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil order for city of Ellis is rescinded by KDHE

Downtown Hays 20 year celebration is August 27

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the City of Ellis public water supply system.

This advisory affects customers located on Washington Street, between 4th Street and 7th Street.

KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to a main break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The advisory took effect on August 19 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.

 </figure>KDHETOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the City of Ellis public water supply system.This advisory affects customers located on Washington Street, between 4th Street and 7th Street.KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to a main break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.The advisory took effect on August 19 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.

Following the opening prayer and blessing at 4:45 p.m., enjoy a hot dog provided and grilled by Astra Bank of Hays and a cold beverage donated by the Kiwanis Club of Hays and served to you by the TMP-M Key Club. 

This will be a cool treat, thanks to ice donated by Buff's Car Wash. The Knights of Columbus, Council #6984 will also be serving complimentary watermelon. Auto World of Hays will provide water throughout the event.&nbsp;

Ice cream, Sno-Cones, Monarch Football Madness tickets and Hays Catholic Schools yard signs will all be available for purchase.&nbsp;

Southwind Crossfit will be hosting a fun run for all ages beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, there will be several sports scrimmages throughout the evening ending with the Blue and White Football Scrimmage on Cripplegate Field at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The TMP-M Cheerleaders will be painting faces as well as performing at 6:45 p.m. Also included is the TMP-M Chess Club, which will show off their skills, and the Garden Club featuring amazing homegrown produce.&nbsp;

At the conclusion of the activities at 9 p.m., a street dance will continue and prizes donated by the TMP-M High School StuCo will be drawn. You must be present to win.&nbsp;

At 10 p.m., the evening will end with a literal “bang” as a firework show will be presented by The Golden Q Bar &amp; Grill and Brick's Rockin’ BBQ. &nbsp;

Non-perishable food items to benefit the St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, will be collected at the welcome table upon entering. 

Parking on campus will be limited to the east and south of Al Billinger Fieldhouse. 

Registration for all events and prizes will be available at the welcome table.

🎙Post Podcast: Hays Catholic schools to host Back to School Bash

As construction progresses on the reconstruction of 27th Street from Hall to Fort in Hays, the construction zone will advance eastward. &nbsp;

On Wednesday, 27th Street will be opened from the Hall Street intersection to Canal Boulevard and closed from just east of Canal to the west side of Walnut south of 27th.

As such, 27th Street traffic will be detoured using Hillcrest north of 27th Street and Walnut south of 27th Street. &nbsp;Those two detour options are shown on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com/DocumentCenter/View/4130/21-08-18-27th-Street-Detour-Map" target="_blank">above map</a>&nbsp;in blue and yellow respectively.

The reconstruction of 27th Street from Hall to Fort will progress steadily from west to east through the remainder of the year.

Regretfully, due to increased spread of COVID-19 in our community, and concerns about how to have a safe and successful event, Trinity Lutheran Church and and Downing-Nelson Oil have decided to postpone the upcoming fundraiser for the ARC Park. It was originally scheduled for Aug. 29.

We have tentatively rescheduled for March 2022, and hope to have a fun and successful fundraiser for this amazing organization at that time—look for details after the new year.&nbsp;

Hays Has Humor's Stand-Up Comedy Showcase is Saturday

Kansas drivers are advised that during the period of Aug. 20 through Labor Day, September 6, the Hays Police Department will join other local and state law enforcement agencies across the state in a crackdown aimed at removing drunk and other impaired drivers from the roadways during the "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose." campaign.&nbsp; &nbsp;

It is illegal everywhere to drive while impaired, yet, in 2019, over 10,000 people in the U.S. were killed in drunk driving crashes. Impaired driving fatalities every day are the direct result of decisions people make. Driving after consuming ANY potentially impairing substance is a decision YOU make.

You know that it is wrong and dangerous. You tell yourself you won’t do it again, but you do. It’s time to stop.

Start a new habit, the habit of NOT driving to situations where you will be tempted to drink or partake in other impairing substances. Ask to ride with a non-drinking friend, designate a driver, or use one of the many other options available. Start today.

According to Don Scheibler, police chief, the "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose." enforcement campaign is intended to remind drivers: &nbsp;

* Don’t consume impairing substances and get behind the wheel. Impaired driving is a major cause of crashes and a danger not just to you and those riding with you, but to every single person on the road.

* Make it a habit to have a sober driver lined up before you drink alcohol away from home.

"We also want to remind everyone to always have your seatbelts on. I t’s your best defense in case of a crash.

You can always count on this department to vigorously enforce impaired driving and other traffic laws, not just during this enforcement campaign but all through the year." Scheibler said in a news release.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This&nbsp;traffic enforcement campaign is supported by a federal grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation. &nbsp;

As a coach, you are allowed to choose your practice schedule (twice a week, for one hour each). The HRC can also work around your weekend schedule if needed.

🎙Post Podcast: Herzogfest kicks off Saturday in Victoria

The Kansas Department of Transportation has launched a survey to seek public input ahead of the 2021 Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) Local Consult process. Participating in the survey gives KDOT insight on the public’s top transportation areas of focus and the ways in which communities across the state may be changing.

All Kansans are encouraged to participate in the short online survey by Aug. 22.
