RUSSELL — From June 10 to -13, Russell will celebrate the 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration of Russell County during Prairiesta 2021.&nbsp;

Friday and Saturday events held at the new museum at 825 N. Kansas, takes you back to relive how the pioneers survived in the late 1800's. Demonstrations in wheat grinding, bread making, milking, butter making, rope making, bees wax candle making, washing, gardening, knitting, aprons, knot tying, and much more will be presented and all ages will be able to participate. Kids can get their "Passport to History" by participating in demonstrations and win prizes.&nbsp; The Russell County Muzzle Loaders will have an encampment set up all four days, and a chuckwagon display and cowboy poet will be on hand along with Will Rogers and Abe Lincoln personalities. A program on Women’s 1800s Fashion will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.&nbsp;

	If you are a Russell County Livestock producer "Burn your brand into history" during our Branding Party. Many other displays from area organizations including 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, Farm Bureau, Smoky Hill Trail Assoc., Santa Fe Trail Assoc., Kansas Post Rock Limestone Coalition, Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and Kansas Strong will be on hand for visitors to learn more about the area and our history. Hays Happenings for June 

Phase 3 of the second season of the North Vine Street Corridor 
Project begins this week, weather permitting. 

During this phase, 
traffic on Vine Street in the area from 35th Street to 43rd Street will 
be shifted to the west side of Vine Street on the new pavement so that 
work can begin on the east side. Like previous phases of construction, 
left turns are not allowed in areas of construction where traffic is 
reduced to a single lane. Only right turns will be allowed to and from 
the I-70 ramps and various intersections. The currently posted detours 
will direct traffic through the construction zones. &nbsp;

Southbound 
Vine to eastbound I-70; as well as, eastbound I-70 to northbound Vine is
 being detoured to use the 32nd Street roundabout. &nbsp; &nbsp; Northbound Vine 
Street to westbound I-70; as well as, westbound I-70 to southbound Vine 
is detoured to use 41st Street, General Hays Road and 43rd Street. 
&nbsp;This phase of construction is expected to last several months through 
the summer.

The city of Larned is hoping generous supporters will help it bring back a beloved tradition that has brought joy to many residents over the years.

The City of Larned's water tower holds a special place in the hearts of its residents for its brilliant light display during the Christmas season. City officials recently launched a capital campaign on GoFundMe to aid in the restoration of this beloved tradition and raise enough to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/City-of-Larned-139334013384544/photos/pcb.788942248423714/788935435091062/" target="_blank">restore the lighting display and complete a full LED upgrade</a>.

"Many had the pleasure of growing up with this Larned tradition and we hope to give that same opportunity to current and future generations," a news release said.

If you are planning on entering poultry in this year's Ellis County Fair,&nbsp;Pullorum-Typhoid testing is required for all birds older than 4 months of age.&nbsp; Any bird younger than 4 months, any waterfowl and any meat pen project birds do not need to be tested.

Fair volunteers have scheduled 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; June 29 to complete this testing. It will be held at the Extension Office at 601 Main St., Hays, in the back meeting room.

Testing required for Ellis County Fair poultry entries

The Ellis City-Wide Garage Sales will be on Saturday, June 5 and the deadline to register is 3 p.m. on Friday, June 4.

Those who register will be included on the map, promoted on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/getellis/" target="_blank">Get Ellis Facebook page</a>, and receive an official garage sales sign for their yard.

Registration is $10 paid as cash or check to the Ellis Chamber of Commerce. Registration forms can be picked up and delivered to the Ellis Alliance office at 820 Washington St., Ellis. Registrations forms can also be downloaded from&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ellischamberofcommerce.com/city-wide-garage-sale/" target="_blank">www.ellischamberofcommerce.com/city-wide-garage-sale/</a>.

The Ellis City-Wide Garage Sales are held annually on the first Saturday in June by the Ellis Chamber of Commerce and is the longest running city-wide garage sales event in Ellis County. This event helps bring people to town and many Chamber-member businesses participate by offering different sales and open hours.

This year, the Ellis Railroad Museum will be offering $1 train rides starting at 9 a.m., weather permitting. The Ellis Chamber of Commerce will cover the costs of the first 50 passengers.

This event helps bring people to town and many Chamber-member businesses participate by offering different sales and open hours.This year, the Ellis Railroad Museum will be offering $1 train rides starting at 9 a.m., weather permitting. The next art show opens at the Deines Cultural Center and Art Galleyr on Sunday.

"Tribute: The Trudy Furney and Derrill Castor Dedication Show" features art from former students of these two beloved and influential Russell high school art teachers. There will be a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition will remain on display until July 30.

The Deines is at 820 N. Main St. in Russell. Open six days a week, Tuesday through Friday noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Call 785-483-3742 for information

New show 'Tribute' opens at Deines gallery on Sunday

 Due to the observance of the Memorial Day on May 31, the refuse/recycling route collection schedules in Hays will be altered as follows: Monday, May 31, 2021 and Tuesday, June 1, 2021 will be picked up on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. 

There is no anticipated change to Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday’s collection schedules. 

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. 

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7:00 a.m., and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule. 

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

Online sale date is June 1 for Kansas Biggest Rodeo

PHILLIPSBURG — Online tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 1 at 8 a.m. for the 92nd&nbsp;annual Kansas Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. The website to purchase tickets is&nbsp;<a href="http://kansasbiggestrodeo.com/">KansasBiggestRodeo.com</a>.

This is the second year for tickets to be offered online, and it’s gone well, said committee chairman JD Shelton.

“We had a good response to the online sales last year,” he said. “It’s convenient for people and makes it easy for out-of-town people to buy tickets.”

The rodeo takes place August 5-7 at the rodeo grounds north of Phillipsburg.

Specialty act for this year is Tricked Out Trick Riders, featuring the Navarre girls. Dusta Kimzey O’Connell is the main trick rider for the Tricked Out company; the Navarre girls are Shyla and Layna, the daughters of Corey and Melissa (Riddle) Navarre.

Barrelman for this year’s rodeo is Justin Rumford. This will be Rumford’s third time as a rodeo clown in Phillipsburg; he is a seven-time PRCA Clown of the Year Award winner.

Randy Corley will call the play-by-play action as rodeo announcer, and Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. will provide the bucking horses and bulls.

Tickets will go on sale in person on July 1 at Heritage Insurance (785 Third Street, Phillipsburg). They can be purchased in person and over the phone with a credit card (785.543.2448).&nbsp;

A convenience fee of $1.25 and a credit card charge is applied to all tickets purchased by credit and debit card, whether they are purchased online and in person or over the phone at Heritage Insurance Group in Phillipsburg.&nbsp;

This year’s rodeo will be held August 5-7 in Phillipsburg and begins at 8 pm each night. Ticket prices for reserved seating are $19 for adults and $15 for children. General admission tickets for Thursday, August 5 are $16 for adults and $12 for children. General admission tickets for Fri., August 6 and Sat., August 7 are $17 for adults and $13 for children. Children ages 3-12 can receive the discount children price.&nbsp;

Thursday, August 5 is Family Night at the rodeo, with all kids ages 10 and under receiving a free ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.

The Hays school board approved its student fees for the 2021-22 school year at its meeting last week.

All of the fees will remain the same with the exception for the school lunch program.

Hays USD 489 fees to remain same for 2021-22 school year

The Ellis County Joint Planning commission will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ellis County Administrative Center, 718 Main, in the commission chambers.

Agenda items include continued discussion and review of the county comprehensive plan and zoning regulations update.

 The event will be held in the church parking lot, with seating in the Activity Center for the meal. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served from 6 to 8 p.m.&nbsp; There will be outdoor games and activities for children and adults from 6 to 9 p.m.&nbsp; These include corn hole, spike ball, cake walk, face painting and more.

Fr. Nick and Fr. Ryan will be sharing their music and artistic talents in the church at 7:30 p.m. An outdoor movie,&nbsp;The Lion King,&nbsp;will begin after 9 p.m. to conclude the evening.&nbsp;Bring your lawn chairs or blankets.
