RILEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating more counterfeit cash in Kansas.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department, a fake $100 bill was used in an attempt to make a purchase at a business in Manhattan on Monday.&nbsp;

Police identified 52-year-old David Voter of Manhattan as the individual who used this bill. Police issued him a Notice to Appear for attempted theft.

Even though police identified the responsible party, police advised the public to be aware this fake money may appear at other businesses in the area.

Earlier in October, police in Cowley County arrested a suspect for allegedly spending counterfeit $100 bills.&nbsp; The Norton County sheriff&nbsp; reported counterfeit bills were circulating in portions of northwest Kansas.

In September the sheriff's office in Haskell County reported counterfeit cash. During the month of June, authorities in Finney County took 16 reports of counterfeit money.

Rolland E. Werner, age 89, passed away on October 29, 2022, at Manor 
of the Plains, Dodge City, Kansas. Rolland was born in Scott City, 
Kansas on May 3, 1933, to Norbert and Peggy (Andra) Werner. He graduated 
from Dodge City Senior High School in 1951.&nbsp; Rolland proudly served 11 
years in the United States Army and Army Reserve, achieving the rank of 
Sergeant Major.&nbsp; He earned an accounting degree from Fort Hays State 
University in 1964.&nbsp; His work centered in the agri-business field, with 
most of his career spent as general manager of the Ford County Feed 
Yard.&nbsp;

Rolland married his high school sweetheart, Betty Lizer on July 21, 
1956.&nbsp; Betty died on August 29, 2002.&nbsp; They had two daughters, Ann and 
Kathy. Kathy died on January 6, 2005.&nbsp; Rolland married Delores Stucker 
on October 25, 2003.&nbsp; She died on June 7, 2015.&nbsp;

Rolland was proud to be from western Kansas.&nbsp; He served as city 
councilman and mayor of Dodge City from 2002 to 2004.&nbsp; He was an active 
member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
 serving as an usher, Eucharistic Minister and on the finance council.&nbsp; 
He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Rolland served on the 
Board of Directors for the Farmers State Bank of Bucklin, KS for 31 
years.&nbsp; Rolland served as a Hospice volunteer for 11 years.&nbsp; It was 
organization dear to Rolland’s heart.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rolland was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Betty and 
Delores, brother Russell, sisters, Adell and Mary, and daughter, Kathy.&nbsp;
 Survivors include his daughter, Ann (Quinby) Henderson, grandsons, Nate
 (Nila) Henderson and Andrew (Emily Clinton) Henderson, and 5 great 
grandchildren; stepdaughter, Marsha Hedlund, stepson Dan (Kim) Stucker, 
step granddaughters Brooke (Heath) Unruh and Dani (Jose) Leon and step 
grandson Reid Hedlund and 5 step great grandchildren; brothers - Richard
 (Kathy) Werner and Kenneth Werner and sister Becky Werner.&nbsp;

Rolland lived a full and thankful life.&nbsp; He loved his family, 
considering his brothers not only his siblings, but his best friends.&nbsp; 
He cherished being Uncle Rolland to numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; His 
greatest joy was being grandpa and great grandpa to all his 
grandchildren.

A Celebration of Rolland’s Life will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, 
November 11, 2022, at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.&nbsp; A rosary will 
be held at 9:30 am Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the Cathedral of Our 
Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City.&nbsp; Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am 
Saturday at the church with Fr. Ted Skalsky presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will 
follow in Scroggins Mausoleum at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. There
 will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Friends may sign
 the register from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Friday, November 11, 2022 at 
Ziegler Funeral Chapel.

Jodi Lynn Brummer, 64, passed away at Salina Regional Medical Center surrounded by family on&nbsp;October 28 th 2022.

Born September 17th , 1958, in Osborne, Kansas, she was the daughter of Charles and June&nbsp;(Sellers) Johnson.

Jodi
 will always be remembered for her cooking, cow trucking, various 
travels, boisterous laugh,&nbsp;kind soul, DIY projects, and her love for 
taking care of others.

Jodi is survived by her 2 kids, Terry Brummer of Osborne, Kansas, Courtney (Steven)Porter of Beatrice, Nebraska, and her Fiancé’, Dale Quillen of Osborne, Kansas. She is also survived by 4 grandkids, Abbey Luedders, Manhattan, Kansas, Denton Luedders, Sutton, Nebraska, Maverick Luedders, Herkimer, Kansas, and Gunner Brummer, Osborne, Kansas, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Leon Brummer, parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Brett Allen Sims announces his death on October 21, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. 
He is survived by his wife Stacy, and daughters Ava, Elle, and Lillian. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wight and Lillian Sims, sister,
 Linda Sims, and spouse Linda Jane Giordano. 
Brett was born in Oakley, Kansas, on October 29, 1965, to Wight and 
Lillian Sims. He grew up on the family farm north of Oakley and attended
 Oakley Schools, graduating from Oakley High School in 1984. He loved 
playing sports at OHS, but basketball was his favorite. Brett attended 
Kansas State University, earning an engineering degree. 
Brett has lived and worked in Texas since 2000. He married Stacy Guthrie
 on August 10, 2014. They had made their home in Blanco, Texas, since 
2020. Brett was a proud “Girl Dad” and was an active presence in the 
lives of his three daughters coaching them in softball, basketball, and 
the art of living.

Brett was a beloved father, husband, and brother. His
 cheerful, openhearted presence was felt by everyone where he worked and
 played. Brett will be greatly missed. 
A Celebration of Life is planned for November 12, 2022, in Blanco, Texas.

Ronald Roy Higerd was born March 31, 1939, on his grandparents’ farm 
east of Gem, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Arthur
 and Ruth Leone (Goin) Higerd. He entered his eternal home with Jesus, 
on October 31, 2022, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby KS. 
Ron married his childhood sweetheart, Norma Lee Rikoff, of Colby, on 
August 31, 1958, in Gem, KS. They have 5 children; Myron (Brenda) of 
Park City, KS, Wm Lynn (Tammy) of Colby, KS; Kent (Janet) of Colby, KS; 
Roxan (Scott) Temaat of Haysville, KS and Kaylene (David) Deware, 
Atchison, KS. Ron and Norma are very proud to have 13 grandchildren: 
Adam, William, Benjamin, Karen, Angela, Valerie, Bryan, Priscilla, 
Megan, Aaron, Michael, Hannah, and Cristi. They also have 23 
great-grandchildren. 
Ron was in the National Guard in both Kansas and Colorado from May 1956 
until July 1964. He received his associates degree in Diesel Mechanics 
from Pueblo Junior College and worked for a few years in that field. Ron
 loved working the land and turning over the dirt that God entrusted to 
him and spent the rest of his years farming. 
Ron was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gem and later 
the First Baptist Church of Colby. Ron loved to sing! He sang in the 
school choir, the college men’s group, the church choir and was the 
church song leader for many years. Even when Alzheimer’s ravaged his 
mind, he could still sing the hymns he loved so much. 
Visitation will be on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 5- 7:00 PM at The 
Gathering Place, 745 Country Club Drive, Colby, KS. His celebration of 
life service will be Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Baalmann 
Mortuary, 190 S Franklin, Colby, KS. Burial will follow at the Gem 
Cemetery, Gem, KS. There will be a time of fellowship with family and 
friends after the burial at the Community Building in Gem.

Ruth G. (Goodwin) Marcotte, age 96 of Victoria, Kansas, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Kingman Healthcare Center, Kingman, Kansas. &nbsp;

She was born April 8, 1926, in Concordia, Kansas, to Glen H. and Gladys (Housholder) Goodwin. &nbsp;She married Lawrence Marcotte on August 9, 1948, in Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;He preceded her in death on October 21, 1972.

Ruth was a math teacher at Ellis High School for a few years, and then&nbsp;taught math&nbsp;at Victoria High School from 1971 to 1974. &nbsp;She grew up in Concordia, was a graduate of Concordia High School, and then&nbsp;received her teacher’s certificates from Kansas Wesleyan College. &nbsp;She was a receptionist at Dr. Joe Brungardt O.D. in Victoria, then was the treasurer for the City of Victoria until she retired. &nbsp;She enjoyed crocheting, baking, working on family genealogy, and keeping up&nbsp;with&nbsp;the kids and grandkids on&nbsp;hercomputer.

Survivors include her children, Michael Marcotte and wife, Holly, Madras, OR; Marilyn Traffas, Sharon, KS; Steve Marcotte and wife, Shirley, Gridley, KS;&nbsp;Stan Marcotte and wife, Maggie, Wichita, KS; Michelle Marcotte, Wichita, KS; Walter Marcotte and wife, Barb, Wichita, KS; her 19 grandchildren; and her 29 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents;&nbsp;her&nbsp;husband, Lawrence; her brother,&nbsp;Carol C. Goodwin; and her son-in-law, Brian Traffas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 4, 2022, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas with Father James Moster officiating. &nbsp;A&nbsp;family&nbsp;inurnment will be held later that day&nbsp;at Saint Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;

A vigil service and a Christian Mothers rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, and from 9:00 to 10:00A.M. Friday, all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas' top elections official warned voters Monday that text messages from outside the state were giving them incorrect information about where to vote, but groups involved in the texting said they weren't trying to confuse or mislead people.

Several Democrats said they began hearing about the texts Sunday or had received them. Each message said it was from a representative of Voting Futures, Voto Latino or Black Voters Matter and provided the address of a voting site, with a picture of a building. In some cases, the person already had voted; in others, people couldn't vote in advance at the listed site, and in some, people could vote in advance there, but not on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2022-midterm-elections">Election Day, Nov. 8</a>.

Movement Labs, a vendor headquartered in Oakland, California, working for both Voto Latino and Black Voters Matter, tweeted that texts also went to voters in Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia.

Kansas Democrats who learned of the texts worried that a disinformation campaign had targeted their voters in hopes of preventing their ballots from counting or discouraging them from voting. And Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, a Republican, said voters should be on “high alert" about potential election misinformation from such texts.

Voting Futures later said in follow-up texts that its information may not have been correct. Voto Latino said the problem was a vendor's “database issue," without naming Movement Labs, and said voters would receive corrected information.

Both Black Voters Matters and Movement Labs said that group had not endorsed the texts.

“We are deeply sorry for the confusion that these text messages created and have taken steps to correct this situation,” Black Voters Matter said. “The last thing we ever want is for our outreach to be confused with intentional disinformation which is sometimes targeted to our communities.”

Kansas counties began allowing people to vote in advance in-person Oct. 19, and people don't need a reason to request a mail ballot. While mail ballots must be postmarked Nov. 8 or before, they can still be counted if they arrive in election offices by Nov. 14.

Democrats and abortion rights advocates have been watching for misinformation after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-covid-technology-health-voting-87dc504b3048e6034896733fc1aa49c6">deceptive texts went to voters</a>&nbsp;on the eve of a statewide vote Aug. 2&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-primary-elections-kansas-abortion-b6d62a852c2ce4617f2c03589fbb523e">decisively rejecting a proposed anti-abortion amendment</a>&nbsp;to the Kansas Constitution. The texts falsely told voters that a yes vote would protect abortion rights, when the opposite was true.

Schwab said in a statement that his office doesn’t use third parties to send information to voters and urged them to contact state and local officials if they have questions, or go to&nbsp;<a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/elections.html">the VoteKansas.gov website.</a>

Voters across the state reported that they started receiving texts Sunday from the three groups about where they could vote, including in the Kansas City area, Wichita and Topeka.

“Voting should be accessible to people and straight-forward, and this complicates that,” said Alexis Simmons, the Kansas House Democrats' communications director, who received two of the texts Sunday. “Voting should be empowering.”

“For four years, my administration has worked relentlessly to help businesses grow and succeed, create quality jobs, and get our state back on track,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“We laid the groundwork for what we’re seeing now: Nearly 30 months of strong revenues that have allowed us to responsibly cut taxes, pay off debts, fully fund schools, invest in our law enforcement, and improve our roads and bridges.”&nbsp;

Individual income tax collections were $357.5 million, which is $52.5 million, or 17.2%, more than the estimate. That is $55.9 million, or 18.6%, more than October 2021. Corporate income tax collections were $32.5 million for the month. That is $0.5 million, or 1.6%, less than the estimate and 18.9% less than October 2021. Corporate receipts for the first four months of FY 2023 are 7.6% greater than the same period in 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Retail sales tax collections were $251.7 million, which is 9.4%, or $21.7 million, more than the estimate. Those collections are $24.0 million, or 10.5%, more than last October. Compensating use tax collections were $70.0 million, which is $2.0 million, or 2.7%, less than the estimate, but 3.6% more than October 2021.&nbsp;

The Consensus Revenue Estimating Group (CRE), comprised of the Department of Revenue, Division of Budget, Legislative Research Department, and economists from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University, will meet on November 9th&nbsp;to review and possibly revise the FY 2023 estimate and make its initial forecast for FY 2024.&nbsp;

Kan. exceeds estimated tax collections 27 straight months

George V. Dinkel, age 73, formerly of Brownell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022, at his home in Victoria, Kansas.

He was born September 7, 1949, in Hays, Kansas to Victor J. and Juliana
 M. (Rajewski).&nbsp; He married Velma (Unrein) on January 8, 1972, in Hays, 
Kansas.

He was a truck driver for National Carriers for over 20 years, and also
 was a farmer.&nbsp; He was a 1967 graduate of Ellis High School and was a 
member of Christ The King Catholic Church of WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a
 veteran of the US Army and moved to Victoria in the spring of this year
 from Brownell, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife Velma Dinkel, of the home; his children, 
John Dinkel and Chris Dixon, St. John’s, FL; Erin Rupp and husband 
Eugene, Victoria, KS; James Dinkel and wife, Annetta, Brownell, KS; his 
sisters, Judy Augustine and husband, Jeff, Hays, KS; Denice Fuller and 
husband, Mike, Concordia, KS; his grandchildren, Jacob Dinkel; Tyler

Thomas Francis “Tom” Schippers,&nbsp;age&nbsp;67,&nbsp;of Wichita, Kansas,&nbsp;died&nbsp;Friday, October 28, 2022, at his home in Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born September 5, 1955, in Hays, Kansas, to John&nbsp;F.&nbsp;and Armella&nbsp;M.&nbsp;(Baier) Schippers.

He married Rosann Marie (Rajewski) on November&nbsp;22, 1980, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 1973 graduate of Victoria High School, and graduated&nbsp;with a business degree&nbsp;from National College of Business in Rapid City, South Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;He and Rosann moved to Wichita in 1981, where he&nbsp;was a Certified Public Accountant with an emphasis in auditing and consulting.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Wichita.

Tom played baseball, basketball and softball.&nbsp;He enjoyed&nbsp;watching sports, especially the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs;&nbsp;playing card&nbsp;games, especially Pinochle and Hearts;&nbsp;Beatles music; and Snickers&nbsp;candy&nbsp;bars.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was also an avid&nbsp;fan&nbsp;of athletics at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, which his children attended&nbsp;in Wichita. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, of the home;&nbsp;his children,&nbsp;Jessica Schippers, Matthew&nbsp;Schippers, Lucas Schippers and wife, Sarah,&nbsp;his&nbsp;granddaughters, Mary&nbsp;Schippers&nbsp;and Ruth Schippers,&nbsp;all of&nbsp;Wichita, KS;&nbsp;his&nbsp;mother, Armella Schippers, Olathe, KS;&nbsp;a sister, Catherine Spikes&nbsp;(Kirk), Olathe, KS; two brothers, Daniel Schippers&nbsp;(Mary Kay), Victoria, KS; and John F. Sharon Springs, KS resident Sarah Marie Richardson, 32, passed away 
unexpectedly at her home in Sharon Springs on Friday, October 28, 2022.

Sarah was born on November 29, 1989, in Rensselaer, IN to Michael 
Stenger and Arlene Roberts.&nbsp; She was one of three children.&nbsp; She 
attended school in Monon, IN and attended North White High School 
through the 11th grade.&nbsp;

On October 26, 2013, she married Michael Richardson in Buffalo, IN.&nbsp; 
To this union, three children were born; Coraline, Darius and Eden.&nbsp; She
 dedicated her life to raising her children. In April of 2022, the 
family moved to Sharon Springs.

Sarah was a movie buff.&nbsp; She loved pizza and animals.&nbsp; She adored her children and loved to sing.

She was preceded in death by her father, her paternal grandfather and 2 uncles.

Surviving family includes her husband Michael and their three 
children; Coraline, Darius and Eden of the home in Sharon Springs, her 
mother Arlene Roberts of Roswell, NM, her mother and father-in-law Verna
 (Reno) Richardson of Petersburg, IN, two sisters; Amber Adams of 
Littleton, CO and Kristi Cooper of Kissimmee, FL, her maternal 
grandparents Donald and Bonnie Roberts, her paternal grandmother 
Patricia Stenger, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022, from 11:00 AM to

Glen Francis Warren, age 88, of Hays, Kansas, passed&nbsp;away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born July 3, 1934, in Zurich, Kansas, to Lawrence H. and Delma M. (Deslongchamp) Warren. &nbsp;He married Geraldine J. (Couture) on September 14, 1956, at Palco, Kansas. &nbsp;She preceded him in death on July 23, 2010. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; He owned and operated Glen’s&nbsp;Auto Parts in Hays for over 20 years, then worked at Rein’s Auto Repair as the shop&nbsp;supervisor&nbsp;for a few years and retired in the late&nbsp;1990’s. &nbsp;Glen grew up in Zurich and was a graduate of Palco High School. &nbsp;He collected&nbsp;metal cast die cars over the years, he played the guitar,&nbsp;the&nbsp;harmonica, and enjoyed spending time with his girls and family.

Survivors include his daughters,&nbsp;Darcy Becker and husband, Jerry, Hays, KS; LaDonna Jo Lundy and husband, Rodney, Fort Worth, TX; his son-in-law, Darrel Goheen, Hays, KS; his brothers, John Warren and wife, Evelyn, Golden,&nbsp;CO; Larry Warren, Osborne, KS; his brother-in-law, Bill Dennebaum, Lakewood, CO;&nbsp;his grandchildren, Pamela Baumfalk&nbsp;and husband,&nbsp;Don; Joselyn Lundy;&nbsp;Brandon Lundy&nbsp;and wide,&nbsp;Sarah; Danel Wolcott; Bryson Lundy&nbsp;and wife,&nbsp;Aly; Preston Becker&nbsp;and wife,&nbsp;Mary Kate; Trent Becker&nbsp;and wife,&nbsp;Emily; his great grandchildren, Boston Lundy; Bayler Lundy; Harbour&nbsp;Lundy; Bella Becker; Kenzie Wolcott;&nbsp;Colton Wolcott; Dylan Goheen; and Cameron Hunt.

Mildred E. "Millie" Werth, age 93, passed away Sunday, October 30th, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society in Ellis. She was born December 21, 1928, in Hays, Kansas, to Martin H. and Teresa M. (Riehle) Orth. She married Richard R. Werth on May 24th, 1948, in Hays. He preceded her in death in 2004. Millie graduated from Ellis High School in 1946 and then went to work for Southwestern Bell. She was a farm wife and worked in Custodial at Fort Hays State University for many years before she retired. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and canning. Millie was an excellent cook and baker. She loved making homemade noodles and home cooked meals for her family. She was an extremely hard worker who always put her children first. She is survived by her son, Allen (Cheryl) Werth of Hays; daughters, Vivian (Bill) Zimmerman of Hays and Linda Werth of Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Werth of Colby, KS; a granddaughter, Jessica Nichols; a grandson, Jason Werth; and two great-grandsons, Braydon Nichols and Trenton Werth. She was preceded in death by her Parents; her husband; infant daughter, Margery; a son, George R Werth; a sister, Mary Ann, and a brother Leo. Mildred E. 'Millie' Werth

Frederic “Fred” or “Pop” Thomas Krebs Jr. was born 
November 8, 1936, to Frederic and Elsie (Leuschen) Krebs, in Columbus, 
Nebraska. Fred departed this life and met the Supreme Commander on 
Friday, October 28, 2022, at 85 years young. He graduated from Columbus 
High School in 1954. 

After graduation, he enlisted in the United State 
Marine Corps. After serving four years in the Marine Corps Fred attended 
college at the University of Colorado. While attending college he met 
Paula Hagan and on January 31, 1959, Fred was united in marriage to 
Paula. To this union, two children were born: Frederic “Fritz” Thomas IV 
and Margaret “Meg” Lyn. After separating from active duty in the Marine 
Corp Fred continued to be in the Marine Reserves and completed 37 years 
as a proud Marine however the Marine Corps was in his blood, so he joined
 the Marine Corps League upon his retirement from the Marine Reserves. 


Fred served in just about every office of the League including 
Detachment Commandant and always looked forward to the yearly 
convention. He traveled far and wide attending conventions. While 
serving in the Marine Reserves he became employed at Central Airlines as
 an International Customs Freight Agent. During his career of working in
 the airline industry he saw many changes which made him essentially 
employed by Frontier Airlines and Continental Airlines. After a long and
 successful career in the airline industry, he retired in 2001. 

Other 
than his children, sports were his passion. He decided to enjoy his 
retirement by following college and pro sports. If you needed or wanted a
 stat, then Pop was the man to call. If you wanted to know about Dorothy
 Lynch salad dressing or pretty much any history then Pop was the man to
 call or so sayeth his Granddaughter. If you needed a laugh, Pop was 
always a man with a witty comment or joke in just about every situation.
 The only time Pop could not pull your leg was when his pipe was in his 
mouth ― that pipe just could not stay still as he tried to stifle a 
giggle of his own. 
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frederic and Elsie; his 
daughter Meg in 2022 and a granddaughter Jordyn Nichole in 2013. Those 
left behind to cherish his memory are his son Fritz and daughter in law 
Kimberly aka Sunflower; granddaughter Halie and husband AJ Forbes and 
many friends. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Baalmann

Kay D. Fiala, 82, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Kay was born February 13, 1940, in Bazine, Kansas, the daughter of

retirement.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Kay loved crossword puzzles, watching her University of Kansas and 
Kansas City sports teams, clothes shopping, going to church, playing 
bingo, hosting family and friends get togethers, and traveling to see 
family.

On February 11, 1972, she married George Fiala at La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death April 5, 1996.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her son, Joel Fiala, South Florida; three 
grandchildren, Julia, Evan, and Doug; one great granddaughter, Sophia; 
two brothers, Gary Mantz (Diana), Bazine, Kansas, and Gail Mantz 
(Marilyn), Bazine, Kansas; two nephews and two nieces, Greg, Chad, 
Brenda, and Megan; and one great nephew and two great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Visitation will be Friday, November 4, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas. &nbsp;

Wilma Jean Berger, 91, passed away 
peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on October 31, 2022, at River 
Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born January 25, 1931, in Hays, 
Kansas,&nbsp;the daughter of Walter George and Olivia Margaret (Rupp) 
McIntosh.&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Walter A. Korbe on June 3, 1948, to which they 
were blessed with three children: William Allen, Debra Jean, and Walter 
Joseph. They later divorced. On March 17, 1976, she married Fred W. 
Berger.

Jean was a farm girl from Hays who 
attended rural country schools in her early years and Girls Catholic 
High School until her marriage in 1948.&nbsp;&nbsp;She later attended Hays High 
School to receive her high school diploma and attended college classes 
at Fort Hays State University and Barton County Community College in 
Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;She worked as a secretary for Henry Pierce Insurance 
Agency, which Bruce Buehler purchased and changed to High Plains 
Insurance.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1968, Fred Berger and silent partner&nbsp;Leo Dreiling formed 
Insurance Planning, Inc.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jean retired in 1987 as an underwriter and 
secretary.&nbsp;

Jean was a hard-working wife and 
mother, talented artist in oil painting, creative in a variety of crafts
 and ceramics, and an amateur photographer.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved gardening and 
growing the perfect roses, traveling with Fred and many times with her 
grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and
 close friends and traveling to various places to support her children 
and grandchildren’s endeavors.&nbsp;&nbsp;She had a very tender heart and 
was&nbsp;always reaching&nbsp;out to those who were hurting or in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jean was a former member of Insurance 
Women of Hays, Daughters of Isabella, Soroptimist International, Etudian
 Club, PEO Chapter HR, Cub Scout Den Mother, the Grandparents Program 
through Fort Hays State University, and a Senior Companion in Great 
Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a beloved child of Christ, former member of Celebration 
Community Church before moving to Great Bend in 2014, and currently a 
member of the First Christian Church in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Survivors include her loving husband 
and best friend, Fred of Great Bend, daughter: Debra J. (Clayton) 
Noffsinger of Great Bend, stepson: Brad A. Berger of Aptos, CA, brother:
 Francis McIntosh of Smith Center, sister: Agnes Hammerschmidt of 
Hutchinson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Charles and Sally Berger 
of Soddy, TN, daughter-In-law: Mary LaFlamme of Hays, grandchildren: 
Candi Pfannenstiel, Jeffrey Noffsinger, Jennifer (Nathan) Sullivan, Cory

Wilma Jean Berger

Connie Darlene Weaver, 
was born on August 29, 1936, to Harry and Viola (Hoar) Baker in Stockton,
 Kansas. She passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. Francis 
Hospital in Colorado Springs.

In
 1954, Connie graduated from Logan High School in Logan, Kansas. In 
1955, she attended Parks Business School in Denver, Colorado and was 
baptized in the Park Hill Baptist Church. While attending church, Connie
 met the love of her life, Fred Joseph Weaver. At the time, he was in 
the United States Air Force. They were married from August 22, 1956 
until his passing in 1988. To this union, two children were born: Terry 
Eugene in 1958 and Linda Ann in 1962.

Connie
 worked for Aurora Public Schools in Aurora, Colorado from 1969 to 1977.
 In 1978, the family moved to Calhan, Colorado where Connie became 
employed by Falcon School District #49 until her retirement in 1999. She
 continued to reside in Calhan until her passing.

Connie
 and Fred enjoyed life and all the people they met along the way. They 
spent many years mentoring young people through 4H (horses, pigs and 
dogs), horse racing (Mr. Astonisher), and traveling (the Kentucky Derby 
was a special trip). In recent years, Connie found joy in Red Hats, 
Silver Sneakers, senior luncheons, family gatherings and her companion 
poodle, Tony. She also took great comfort in the lord and the words of 
the Bible.

On a pad by her phone, Connie had written, “just another journey” and “God Bless” - few words with great meaning.

Connie
 is survived by brother, Darrell Baker of Logan, Kansas; son, Terry 
(Mimi) Weaver of Haxtun, Colorado; daughter, Linda (Darren) Webb of 
Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandaughter, Lynette Salway of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 
Colleen Weaver of Haxtun, Colorado; grandson, Jake (Krista) Webb of 
Cheyenne, Wyoming; and great grandchildren, Hale Salway, Chayton Salway,
 Creed Salway, Logan Webb, Adelynn Webb, all of Cheyenne, Wyoming. She 
also leaves behind many family members in Kansas.

Connie
 was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Viola Baker; husband, 
Fred Joseph Weaver; and sister-in-laws, Carlyn Baker and Carol Ediger.

A
 memorial Service will be help at 10:30AM, Thursday, November 3, 2022,

Connie Darlene Weaver

Robert Eugene “Bob” Helmick, 75, of Atwood, died Friday, October 28, 
2022. He was born April 4, 1947, in Potomac Manor, WV to John W. and 
Georgia Helmick. Bob was the eldest of seven children. 

He grew up in the
 bituminous coal region of Western Pennsylvania. One day, he decided that
 he did not need to go to school anymore, and his dad did not argue. The
 next morning Bob was awakened by his dad, and they spent a day in the 
coal mines. The next day, Bob was back in school. He graduated from 
Waynesburg High School, Waynesburg, PA. 

After graduation, he entered the 
US Army and after serving 20, years, retired as a Master Sergeant. His 
Military Specialty was Infantry and Military Intelligence. Bob served 
one Combat tour in the Republic of Vietnam and 3 overseas tours in the 
Federal Republic of Germany. After his retirement from the military in 
October 1995, at Ft. Riley, Kansas, he went to work as a Civil Service 
employee with the Third ROTC Region as their Security Officer, 
responsible for initiating security background checks on all cadet 
personnel. In November 1992, he accepted an assignment to Fort Bragg, NC
 and moved the family to Hope Mills, NC. At Ft. Bragg he served as the 
Safety and Security Officer for the Directorate of Morale, Welfare and 
Recreation. He served in this capacity until his retirement in March 
2008. 

Bob and Cynthia always had a desire to move back to Kansas and in 
2010 decided to make the move back to Atwood, Kansas, Cynthia’s 
childhood home. Although never a farmer or exposed to small town life,&nbsp; Bob always had the utmost respect for the ways of small-town life in an 
agricultural community, especially his Pochop family, Frank, and 
Elizabeth, Anthony, Gerard, Becky, Kevin and Michael. Bob spent many 
summers driving the truck during the wheat harvest for his 
brother-in-law Mike Lundquist and also his father-in-law, Frank, and 
brother-in-law, Gerard. (If you know Mike or Becky Lundquist ask them 
about ol’ Blue). Bob also spent time helping Michael move irrigation 
pipe and ‘enjoyed’ an occasional drenching from this activity. Bob loved
 his family and spoke regularly with siblings and loved visits from the 
children and grandchildren. 
In November 1986 Bob married Cynthia Pochop; Bob and his family lovingly
 accepted her 3 daughters as their own. After returning to Atwood Bob 
drove the County Shuttle making many new friends until health issues 
forced him to stop. Despite limitations imposed by his health he did as 
much as he could to help Cynthia at home. The kitchen chairs had rolling
 casters and he was able to prepare meals and clean up afterwards as 
well. He was a good cook; chili and pasta dishes were his favorite and 
specialty. Late this summer he even juiced 15 gallons of apples so they 
could have fresh apple juice. 
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Stephen 
Helmick. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; daughters, Diana Gainey, 
of Fayetteville NC., Erin Pinero, of Colorado Springs and Catherine 
(Daniel) Vigil, also of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Ezykiel Vigil, 
of Ft. Collins, CO, Gabriel Vigil, of Colorado Springs, Connor Pinero, 
currently stationed at Camp Humphreys in Korea, Kaitlyn Pinero, of 
Colorado Springs, and bonus granddaughter Savannah Karl, of Opelika , 
AL; sisters, Fay(Gary Thomas), of Jakes Run, WV, Judy (Jim Vaughn), of 
Pontotoc, MS, Pam Candela, of Morgantown, WV and Beverly Allen, also of 
Morgantown, and brother David Helmick, of Mt. Morris, PA. Bob was active
 in the Knights of Columbus, serving in various positions within the 
Council and District in the State of North Carolina; especially Special 
Olympics and also at Sacred Heart Church in Atwood, Kansas. He was also a
 member of the local VFW . 
Military honors include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service 
Medal\ Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal., Vietnam Cross of Gallantry
 W/Palm, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Bronze Star Medal, Army Service
 Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon “3”, Army Commendation Medal, NCO 
Professional Development Ribbon “4”, and Expert (M-16) Rifle). 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
November 2, 2022, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Mass is 10:30 
a.m. Thursday, November3, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood.

 In lieu of flowers or plants it was Bob’s request that donations be 
made to the Monument to the Unborn, Knights of Columbus, Council 3033 in
 Atwood, "Pre Born!”, or to the local Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll

 </figure>Robert Eugene “Bob” Helmick, 75, of Atwood, died Friday, October 28, 
2022. He was born April 4, 1947, in Potomac Manor, WV to John W. and 
Georgia Helmick. Bob was the eldest of seven children. He grew up in the
 bituminous coal region of Western Pennsylvania. One day, he decided that
 he did not need to go to school anymore, and his dad did not argue. The
 next morning Bob was awakened by his dad, and they spent a day in the 
coal mines. The next day, Bob was back in school. He graduated from 
Waynesburg High School, Waynesburg, PA. After graduation, he entered the 
US Army and after serving 20, years, retired as a Master Sergeant. His 
Military Specialty was Infantry and Military Intelligence. Bob served 
one Combat tour in the Republic of Vietnam and 3 overseas tours in the 
Federal Republic of Germany. After his retirement from the military in 
October 1995, at Ft. Riley, Kansas, he went to work as a Civil Service 
employee with the Third ROTC Region as their Security Officer, 
responsible for initiating security background checks on all cadet 
personnel. In November 1992, he accepted an assignment to Fort Bragg, NC
 and moved the family to Hope Mills, NC. At Ft. Bragg he served as the 
Safety and Security Officer for the Directorate of Morale, Welfare and 
Recreation. He served in this capacity until his retirement in March 
2008. Bob and Cynthia always had a desire to move back to Kansas and in 
2010 decided to make the move back to Atwood, Kansas, Cynthia’s 
childhood home. Although never a farmer or exposed to small town life,&nbsp; Bob always had the utmost respect for the ways of small-town life in an 
agricultural community, especially his Pochop family, Frank, and 
Elizabeth, Anthony, Gerard, Becky, Kevin and Michael. Bob spent many 
summers driving the truck during the wheat harvest for his 
brother-in-law Mike Lundquist and also his father-in-law, Frank, and 
brother-in-law, Gerard. (If you know Mike or Becky Lundquist ask them 
about ol’ Blue). Bob also spent time helping Michael move irrigation 
pipe and ‘enjoyed’ an occasional drenching from this activity. Bob loved
 his family and spoke regularly with siblings and loved visits from the 
children and grandchildren. 
In November 1986 Bob married Cynthia Pochop; Bob and his family lovingly
 accepted her 3 daughters as their own. After returning to Atwood Bob 
drove the County Shuttle making many new friends until health issues 
forced him to stop. Despite limitations imposed by his health he did as 
much as he could to help Cynthia at home. The kitchen chairs had rolling
 casters and he was able to prepare meals and clean up afterwards as 
well. He was a good cook; chili and pasta dishes were his favorite and 
specialty. Late this summer he even juiced 15 gallons of apples so they 
could have fresh apple juice. 
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Stephen 
Helmick. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; daughters, Diana Gainey, 
of Fayetteville NC., Erin Pinero, of Colorado Springs and Catherine 
(Daniel) Vigil, also of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Ezykiel Vigil, 
of Ft. Collins, CO, Gabriel Vigil, of Colorado Springs, Connor Pinero, 
currently stationed at Camp Humphreys in Korea, Kaitlyn Pinero, of 
Colorado Springs, and bonus granddaughter Savannah Karl, of Opelika , 
AL; sisters, Fay(Gary Thomas), of Jakes Run, WV, Judy (Jim Vaughn), of 
Pontotoc, MS, Pam Candela, of Morgantown, WV and Beverly Allen, also of 
Morgantown, and brother David Helmick, of Mt. Morris, PA. Bob was active
 in the Knights of Columbus, serving in various positions within the 
Council and District in the State of North Carolina; especially Special 
Olympics and also at Sacred Heart Church in Atwood, Kansas. He was also a
 member of the local VFW . 
Military honors include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service 
Medal\ Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal., Vietnam Cross of Gallantry
 W/Palm, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Bronze Star Medal, Army Service
 Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon “3”, Army Commendation Medal, NCO 
Professional Development Ribbon “4”, and Expert (M-16) Rifle). 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
November 2, 2022, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Mass is 10:30 
a.m. Thursday, November3, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood.

Leon B. Zerr, age 66, of Grinnell, KS passed away after a single auto 
accident on October 29, 2022. Leon was the eldest son of Vince and the 
late Kathleen Zerr. 
Leon attended Angelus Grade School and graduated from Grinnell High 
School in 1975. At GHS Leon was the first wrestler to win a regional 
wrestling championship and qualify for the state wrestling tourney. His 
five younger brothers followed his lead, and all were state qualifiers 
and or state placers. His lifework was in the oil fields, farms, mines, 
lumber and transportation industry in Kansas and neighboring states. 
He enjoyed spending time outdoors with the love of his life Lois, he 
also enjoyed fishing, hunting and time with friends and family. 
Leon is survived by his only daughter Ashley Lanning, of Lawrence, KS; 
his father, Vincent Zerr, of Grinnell; favorite sister Sherri (Bob) 
Kuhlman, of Oakley; his brothers, Rocky, of Oakley, Darrell (Diane), of 
Centennial, CO, Tom (Donna) of Kansas City, MO, Don (Anne) of Aurora, CO
 and Curtis, of Park City, KS, and his 2 grandchildren, Lisa and Lena 
Lanning of Lawrence, KS. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Zerr and his mother Kathleen (Baalman) Zerr. 
A memorial Mass is scheduled at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 3,

TOPEKA (AP) — The online commercials in a state Senate race in some Raleigh, North Carolina, suburbs make an ominous claim, similar to one repeated across the country ahead of the Nov. 8 election: The Republican candidate “wants to strip away our reproductive rights.”

The Republican, Mark Cavaliero, says the Planned Parenthood-affiliated political action committee behind the ads is misrepresenting his views, which he says stop short of endorsing a complete abortion ban in one of the Southern states with the fewest abortion restrictions. “There should be some limit,” he said in an interview. “Where that limit is is up for discussion.”

The same theme is echoing in elections across the country in the first nationwide election since the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that protected the right to abortion nationally.

Now, it's a state-by-state question that's the subject of ballot measures in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-south-carolina-general-lindsey-graham-d81ce581ab1a4c1e4af0ed3991796fdd">some states</a>&nbsp;and is a major issue in many elections across the U.S. on Nov. 8. Outcomes of elections for governors, state lawmakers, supreme court justices and attorneys general could determine abortion access. Beyond that, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-south-carolina-general-lindsey-graham-d81ce581ab1a4c1e4af0ed3991796fdd">nationwide ban</a>&nbsp;on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy has been proposed in Congress.

Abortion-rights groups and Democratic candidates are sounding alarms that Republicans would curtail access. Republicans, even those who have supported abortion bans, are campaigning mostly about other issues, including inflation and crime.

Still, it's clear that certain Republican victories could result in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-us-supreme-court-health-32f106503dad6d0407003971ea828262">abortion restrictions</a>.

“We’ve got states like Kansas, Pennsylvania, even Georgia, and Wisconsin where the governor's races or state legislature races could determine perhaps where these states go on abortion rights, even though abortion isn't directly on the ballot,” said Linda Goler Blount, president of the Black Women's Health Imperative.

Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee, also says results from the election will shape abortion policy. “If Republicans are elected, we may be able to pass some measures," she said in an interview.

In North Carolina, where both chambers of the legislature are under GOP control, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has twice vetoed bills that would have restricted abortion, which is currently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-north-carolina-government-and-politics-59ec5074eb84f16aa614276c7c3fa24d">barred after 20 weeks of pregnancy</a>, with narrow exceptions for urgent medical emergencies for the pregnant woman.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-us-supreme-court-religion-campaigns-860e5e27dc3301140fabd8a8462868c2">equation could change</a>&nbsp;if Republicans can pick up two more seats in the state Senate and three in the House, giving the party enough members to override vetoes from Cooper, whose term runs another two years.

That’s why Planned Parenthood Action PAC North Carolina has been airing ads targeting Cavaliero and other Republicans in districts where voting margins are expected to be tight. It's part of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-health-congress-71871318f3c725a7df0bbe183e6c84be">nationwide campaign</a>&nbsp;that planned to spend $50 million.

Democratic incumbent Sydney Batch recounted at a recent campaign event about how, when she was in the state House in 2019, she was present to vote against a veto override even though she was recovering from a mastectomy.

“My colleagues and I will continue to show up because we believe that medical decisions and bodily autonomy of every woman in North Carolina should be in their hands,” she said.
