October 1-7 is an exciting time as 4-H families across the nation celebrate National 4-H Week. 

According to the National 4-H website, 4-H was established as Youth Clubs in 1902 with agricultural after-school clubs focused on particular ag products such as tomatoes or corn. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4-H. By 1914, 4-H Clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted. 

The Cooperative Extension System is a partnership of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the USDA, more than 100 land-grant universities and more than 3,000 county offices across the nation, including all 105 counties in Kansas. Cooperative Extension combines the expertise and resources of federal, state, and local governments to meet the need for research, knowledge, and educational programs. 

In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.

On September 26, I was joined by 4-H Ambassador Ailey Williams to address the Barton County Commission. 

We were delighted with Proclamation 2023-13 which states, in part, “4-H, as delivered by Cooperative Extension – a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people have taken on critical societal issues, such as addressing community health inequities, engaging in civil discourse, and advocating for equity and inclusion for all; and whereas, National 4-H Week showcases the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlights the remarkable 4-H youth in Kansas and throughout America who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Barton County, Kansas, that October 1-7, 2023 is hereby known as National 4-H Week throughout Barton County; and further, that the Commission recognizes the importance of using the Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, the four core values of the 4-H mission, to make the best better….”

If you know of a young person who would benefit from the opportunities of 4-H, enrollment for the new year began October 1. The Cottonwood Extension District offers eight community clubs in Barton County and over 40 project areas from art&nbsp;to woodworking for youth to explore, learn, and grow.

Previous projects have included cleanup at Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo and the making cookies for county-wide emergency service personnel. Many individual clubs will take on separate projects in their town. Teaching youth the value of giving back to their communities helps all communities be stronger and to develop the leaders needed to not just survive but to thrive.

BERAN: It's 4-H enrollment time

An American F-16 fighter aircraft shot down a Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle that had been observed conducting airstrikes in a U.S.-restricted operating zone about a kilometer from U.S. forces in Syria Thursday.

During a phone call between Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, the two leaders discussed the incident and agreed that while it is regrettable, the focus must remain on the important mission to defeat ISIS in Syria, said Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during a media briefing Thursday.

"The secretary reaffirmed that the United States remains in Syria exclusively in support of the campaign to defeat ISIS," Ryder said. "The secretary also acknowledged Turkey's legitimate security concerns and underscored the importance of close coordination between the United States and Turkey to prevent any risk to U.S. forces or the global coalition’s defeat-ISIS mission."&nbsp;

At around 7:30 a.m. local time, U.S. forces observed UAVs conducting airstrikes in the vicinity of Hasakah, Syria, Ryder said. Some of the strikes were inside a declared U.S.-restricted operating zone.

"At approximately 11:30 local time, a Turkish UAV reentered the ROZ on a heading toward where U.S. forces were located," Ryder said. "U.S. commanders assessed that the UAV, which was now less than a half a kilometer from U.S. forces, to be a potential threat, and U.S. F-16 fighters subsequently shot down the UAV in self-defense at approximately 11:40 local time."&nbsp;

No U.S. forces were injured, Ryder said, also adding there is no indication that Turkey had intentionally been targeting U.S. forces.&nbsp;

"It's a regrettable incident, but U.S. commanders on the ground did assess that there was a potential threat and so they took prudent action in this scenario," Ryder said. "But again, the secretary has talked to his counterpart. They had the opportunity to have a fruitful conversation and ... commit to one another that the U.S. and Turkey will continue to closely communicate and coordinate. And as I mentioned, Turkey does remain a very important and valuable&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nato.int/" target="_blank">NATO</a>&nbsp;ally and partner to the United States."&nbsp;

In addition to the phone call between Austin and Guler, newly sworn-in chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., also discussed the incident with his counterpart, Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Gen. Metin Gurak. Those two leaders discussed the U.S. and Turkey's shared objective of defeating ISIS and the importance of following common deconfliction protocols.

Focus remains on defeat of ISIS after U.S. shoots down drone over Syria

HOISINGTON — Margaret Ann Ney, 93, passed away on October 5, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born August 10, 1930, in Hoisington, the daughter of John E. and Margaret (Kultgen) Koeller. &nbsp;

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, in Hoisington. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella of Claflin.&nbsp;

Margaret Ann was married to Francis J. Ney on April 11, 1950. He preceded her in death on November 29, 2003. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Ney, daughter, Mary Lou Degenhardt, and a grandson, Shawn A. Ney, daughter-in-law, Debbie Ney; two brothers, John and William Koeller, a sister, Luella M. Crouch, brother-in-law, William M. Crouch, and a sister-in-law, Opal Koeller.

Margaret Ann worked as a retail clerk for Duckwalls &amp; Banner stores in Hoisington. She then went to work in 1989 for Anthony’s and later Stage Stores in Great Bend. She also sold Avon over her lifetime until October of 2019. 

Before and after her retirement she hosted bus trips to the casinos of Kansas with Cheyenne Travel and the Hoisington Recreation. &nbsp;Margaret Ann didn’t know a stranger for she was always looking to fill that next bus trip. 

Her smile and outgoing personality will live forever in the following survivors: sons, John F. Ney (Nicky) of Great Bend and Bob (Hope) Ney of Hoisington, son-in-law, Richard Degenhardt of Great Bend, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 12 to 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A vigil and rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Kansas, celebrated by Father Warren Stoecklein. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dick Butkus, a fearsome middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears, has died, the team announced Thursday. He was 80.

According to a statement released by the team, Butkus' family confirmed that he died in his sleep overnight at his home in Malibu, California.

Butkus was a Hall of Famer whose bone-rattling tackles made him one of the most intimidating players in NFL history. He was the quintessential modern linebacker, a disruptive force who roamed sideline to sideline and left a trail of broken opponents behind.

He was a first-team All-Pro selection five times and made the Pro Bowl in eight of his nine seasons before knee injuries forced his retirement at age 31. Despite a short career, Butkus came to define his position. He routinely ranks among the NFL’s top 100 players.

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services will not only be observing the annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. It will be. celebrating 40 years of service.

Options started as a grassroots movement in the 1970s. Women were opening their own homes to provide shelter to women who were victims of domestic violence, said Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director.

One of Options' current board members was one of those people in the '70s who was providing safe haven to victims.

"What happened with those early folks is that they realized a room or space on the couch provided immediate safety, but there were so many services people needed that they did not have the capacity to give," Hecker said.&nbsp;

Through local support, including the University Women at Fort Hays State University, the Northwest Kansas Family Shelter was founded.

The name of the agency has changed over the years. Today Options offers a shelter and community services in 18 northwest Kansas counties, including a satellite office in Colby and mobile services across its coverage area.

Options will have a variety of activities beginning Sept. 22 with a Hays Chamber Chat to honor its anniversary and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"Wear purple on Oct. 19 and stand in solidarity with victims who are still suffering in silence to really show there's a whole community of support out there for folks," Hecker said.

"Wear purple—purple hair, purple shirt, purple pants. Whatever you got, put it on."

Hecker said Options has five main programming elements—shelter, legal advocacy for victims, a rapid rehousing program, community support services and community advocacy. All services are free and confidential.

Options helps victims to navigate the criminal justice system if they choose to report crimes against them.

The goal of the rapid rehousing program is to get victims back into a home that is their own as soon as possible.

"Not everyone needs shelter, but they will still need services," she said of the community support program.&nbsp;

Some of the community awareness programs have included art displays, such as "Broken Brides" and "What Were You Wearing." "Broken Brides" is a display of products that a domestic violence victim might need like cream for cigarette burns.

"What Were You Wearing" is an exhibit that seeks to break the myth what victims were wearing contributed to their sexual assaults. It includes recreations and, in some instances, the exact clothing victims were wearing when they were assaulted.

Options also provides training for bar staff through the Safe Bar Alliance program. Employees learn to recognize signs of sexual predators and ways to keep customers safe.

Cut it Out teaches salon staff to recognize signs of abuse and gives them tips on how to talk to their customers about getting help.

Options can also help businesses write domestic violence policies, Hecker said.

Hecker said the number of people seeking assistance through Options has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

"I've said this many times. I think the pandemic ripped the band-aid off of America's dirty little secret," she said. "Things happen behind closed doors, so I think it makes it really easy not to talk about it or pretend it's not happening."

The increase in the number of people seeking help to deal with domestic violence has been partially the result of an increase in the different avenues now available to access resources, Hecker said.

It will be. celebrating 40 years of service.Options started as a grassroots movement in the 1970s. Women were opening their own homes to provide shelter to women who were victims of domestic violence, said Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director.One of Options' current board members was one of those people in the '70s who was providing safe haven to victims."What happened with those early folks is that they realized a room or space on the couch provided immediate safety, but there were so many services people needed that they did not have the capacity to give," Hecker said.&nbsp;Through local support, including the University Women at Fort Hays State University, the Northwest Kansas Family Shelter was founded.The name of the agency has changed over the years. Today Options offers a shelter and community services in 18 northwest Kansas counties, including a satellite office in Colby and mobile services across its coverage area.Options will have a variety of activities beginning Sept. 22 with a Hays Chamber Chat to honor its anniversary and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.Below is a schedule of activities: • 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 - tree lighting ceremony at Goodland Regional Medical Center • 7 p.m. Oct. 3 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony at Fike Park in Colby • 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony at Russell Regional Hospital • 7 p.m. Oct. 6 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony followed by the 40th-anniversary celebration at Farmers Insurance, Chelsy Proehl-Kofoid Agency, 1012 Main, Hays • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 - Paint the Town Purple, art therapy event, Colby Community College Student Union • 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 -&nbsp; Paint the Town Purple, art therapy event, Union Pacific Park in Downtown Hays Oct. 19 - Wear Purple Day - Show your support for survivors of domestic violence by wearing purple"Wear purple on Oct. 19 and stand in solidarity with victims who are still suffering in silence to really show there's a whole community of support out there for folks," Hecker said."Wear purple—purple hair, purple shirt, purple pants. Whatever you got, put it on."Hecker said Options has five main programming elements—shelter, legal advocacy for victims, a rapid rehousing program, community support services and community advocacy. All services are free and confidential.Options helps victims to navigate the criminal justice system if they choose to report crimes against them.The goal of the rapid rehousing program is to get victims back into a home that is their own as soon as possible."Not everyone needs shelter, but they will still need services," she said of the community support program.&nbsp;Some of the community awareness programs have included art displays, such as "Broken Brides" and "What Were You Wearing." "Broken Brides" is a display of products that a domestic violence victim might need like cream for cigarette burns."What Were You Wearing" is an exhibit that seeks to break the myth what victims were wearing contributed to their sexual assaults. It includes recreations and, in some instances, the exact clothing victims were wearing when they were assaulted.Options also provides training for bar staff through the Safe Bar Alliance program. Employees learn to recognize signs of sexual predators and ways to keep customers safe.Cut it Out teaches salon staff to recognize signs of abuse and gives them tips on how to talk to their customers about getting help.Options can also help businesses write domestic violence policies, Hecker said.Hecker said the number of people seeking assistance through Options has not returned to pre-pandemic levels."I've said this many times. I think the pandemic ripped the band-aid off of America's dirty little secret," she said. "Things happen behind closed doors, so I think it makes it really easy not to talk about it or pretend it's not happening."The increase in the number of people seeking help to deal with domestic violence has been partially the result of an increase in the different avenues now available to access resources, Hecker said.You can walk into an Options office at 2716 Plaza, Hays, or&nbsp;1480 W. Dennis Donald Bakos, age 80, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023, in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on November 13, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Geraldine (Levine) Bakos. 

Dennis attended St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin and made a significant impact during his lifetime. On February 7, 1970, Dennis married the love of his life, Evelyn Dale Phelps, in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He served his country as a U.S. Army veteran and then embarked on a successful career path.

Dennis worked for Schlitz Brewing Company, where he was in charge of ordering raw products. He later became the vice president of Hop Union, ultimately finishing his career as the president of the company. His dedication and hard work left a lasting legacy in the brewing industry.

Outside of his professional life, Dennis had a deep love for reading, drawing, and spending weekends watching movies with his son. He cherished these moments of relaxation and bonding.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn, of Hays; his son, Jason Joseph Bakos, and wife Melinda, along with their children, Makeena and Ashlyn, all residing in Spokane, Washington. He is also survived by his siblings, Diane, Christine, Andrea, Antoinette, and his younger brother, also named Dennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

Funeral services to honor Dennis's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center, located at 506 W. 6th, Hays.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Lawrence Seminary, 301 Church Street, Mt. Calvary, WI 53057, a cause that held special meaning for Dennis.

Norma Jean Harvey, age 88, died on October 3, 2023, at Grisell Memorial Hospital, Ransom, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on September 14, 1935, in WaKeeney, Kansas the daughter of Richard and Ila (Dorman) Phillips.

Norma’s father worked with the railroad and the family lived in several area towns, Collyer, Tribune, Utica, and WaKeeney, as Norma grew up.&nbsp; 

She was a 1953 graduate of Utica High School where she met Allen “Toad” Harvey.&nbsp; They were married on August 23, 1953, in Utica.&nbsp; Except for the years he was in the Navy, the two were inseparable.&nbsp; 

Norma and Toad lived in many places for his work, until they settled in Buffalo, Wyoming where they purchased and ran a lodge, “The Pines” for years.&nbsp; After selling “The Pines” they moved to WaKeeney and traveled as much as they could in their motorhome. Norma Jean also loved to oil paint, especially flowers, and create other “crafty” items.

Norma is survived by her sister, Vicki James, of Denver Colorado; three sisters-in-law, Letha, Wanda, and Doris; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, on July 8, 2015, her parents, and her sister, Gwen McCartee.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Herbert (Herb) Benton Bowman, 92, passed away October 3, 2023 at Credo Living Center, Hoisington, Kansas.

He was born June 11, 1931 in Larned, Kansas, the son of Hugh Benton and Velma Myrtle Rice Bowman.&nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, he owned Bo-lan Holstein Farm for 51 years. After graduating from Zook High School and attending Kansas State university, he served in the United States Army. He was active in Larned United Methodist Church, Kansas Holstein Association, and Pawnee County Extension Board.

He is survived by his wife Kathy (Kathleen) Penka. They were married on September 4, 1954 in Arkansas.

Other survivors include: &nbsp;four daughters, Donna Maskus, Hays; Dee (James) Eberwein, Alma; Shelly (Gregg) Sexton, Abilene; and Sharon (Mark) Lessard, Larned; sister, Evelyn Bergmann, Kansas City; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Bowman, Salina; ten grandchildren, Mark Maskus, Matt Maskus, Allen Eberwein, Ben (Jami) Eberwein, Chris Eberwein, Sarah (Jarrod) Bowser, Jamie Sexton, Kathleen (Justin) Schultze, Alex (Seth) Filbert, and Amanda Lessard; nine great-grandchildren, Ellerey and Easton Eberwein, Claire and Cora Bowser, Grant and Royce Schultze and Giles, Layne and Baby Filbert.

Lin H. Gordon, 76, Hays, died Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at his home.

He was born June 28, 1947 in Ellsworth, the son of Marion and Dorothy (Whitmer) Gordon. 

In 1965, he graduated from Hays High School and was actively involved with class reunions. 

He married Joyce Lehman, and they later divorced. On May 1, 1982 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Legleiter in Hays, and they were married 22 years before she preceded him in death on November 26, 2004. 

He worked in construction, was a truck driver, treated oil wells for Champion Oil Company, and was a fuel man for co-op. He was active in AARP, enjoyed carpentry, home remodeling, and learning history, especially through his opportunity to take a cruise to ancient civilizations and his membership in The Westerners. Lin loved spending time outdoors trap shooting, hiking, fly fishing, making his own flies, doing yardwork, and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Brandon Legleiter and wife Nicole of Hays and Ben Gordon of Topeka, three sisters, Carol Gordon and Phyllis Robertson, both of Hays and Anita Gordon-Gilmore of Olathe, four granddaughters, Tristan, Teagan, Aspen, and Brecklyn Legleiter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Bonnie.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday, October 9, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Lin H. Gordon

Kamryn Marie McFarland, age 19, of Big Bow, Kansas, was born April 9, 2004, at 3:20 p.m. in Galveston, Texas. She passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 8:38 p.m. in Ulysses, Kansas. 

She is the daughter of Rex A. and Sheri (Creech) Julian and other mother, Terry McFarland.

Kamryn graduated high school at the age of 17. While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, played volleyball, and ran cross country. She then attended Garden City Community College in Garden City before transferring to Fort Hays University seeking a teaching degree. 

Kamryn volunteered at the Loaves and Fishes and Restored by Grace in Ulysses. This is where she met so many Christian women. This is where her journey with Christ began to shine. 

Kamryn taught third grade at Harvest Christian School. She loved her job and her students. Kamryn loved fearlessly and one of her great loves was Angel Antonio Miranda. They loved each other tremendously and had planned on making a future together.

Survivors include her parents, Rex and Sheri Julian of Big Bow; aunt, Terry (Teke) McFarland; sisters, Kaemyn McFarland, Britt Cantrell and husband Matt, Kristin Eldredge and husband Chris, Amanda Julian, Heather Julian, Tabitha Julian and Samantha Julian; brothers, Kyle Buse and wife Rachel, Vernon Buse and wife Jamie, Zachary Julian, Nathan Julian and Skylar Julian; many nieces, nephews and cousins, Haleigh, Gracie, Ella, Kiki, Landon, Lexie, Matthew and Emerson; and a multitude of friends and other family members.

Memorial service will be Monday, October 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson. The service will also be available on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Inurnment will be in Woodson, Texas, on October 13, 2023.

On October 4 at approximately 7:38 p.m. the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire in an apartment complex located at 1414 E. 29th Steet in Hays.

Initial reports from neighbors calling 911 were that a smoke alarm was going off in the apartment with smoke coming from the front door and possibly someone was inside. 

Arriving fire crews found smoke coming from the front door. The firefighters had to force the door open and discovered an unconscious female on a couch. Firefighters rescued the female occupant and extinguished the smoldering fire. The female occupant was transported to the hospital.

 The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental due to cigarette smoking. 

Damage to the apartment was minor smoke damage and some fire damage to chair cushion. 

The Hays Fire Department would like to thank Ellis County Communications, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department for their assistance.

Unconscious woman rescued from smoldering fire in Hays apartment

ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Simone Biles and her teammates including Leanne Wong of Overland Park, Kansas were far from perfect, and yet nothing could stand in the way of a victory that set a record for both the U.S. women's team and the greatest gymnast in history.

The U.S. women earned a record seventh consecutive team title at the gymnastics world championships on Wednesday night. For Biles, it was also her 33rd major championship medal — across the worlds and Olympics — to make her the most decorated female gymnast ever.

And it's fitting that it came in Antwerp, the Belgian port city where Biles came to international prominence 10 years ago by winning her first world title in 2013.

“It wasn’t Team USA’s best day,” Biles said. "It’s crazy, we still pulled it out. So I’m really, really proud of the team.”

The American team of Biles, Leanne Wong, Shilese Jones, Skye Blakely and Joscelyn Roberson&nbsp; combined for a total of 167.729 points to edge second-place Brazil and France.

The U.S. team won by a margin of 2.199 points as the final proved to be a closer contest than anticipated after the Americans put up a dominant performance in qualifying to finish more than five points ahead of the field.

“We had some mistakes here and there, but just keep going, keep relying on our training,” Biles said. “But I think this team that we have brought this year has the most great courage and fight. ... We had so many emotions going throughout the day.”

The U.S. women have won gold in the team event at every world championship that included a team competition since 2011. Their victory in Antwerp broke a tie with the Chinese men for the longest streak of consecutive team titles.

Biles now has 26 world championship medals, 20 of them gold, to go with her seven Olympic medals, including the 2016 Olympic title. Her 33 combined medals at the sport’s two biggest events are one more than what Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union achieved.

Russia was banned from the event because of sanctions imposed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) as a result of the war against Ukraine. In the absence of their Russian rivals — the defending Olympic champions — the Americans were the overwhelming favorites.

But the U.S team overcame an early scare as Roberson was forced out of the event even before it started after she seemed to hurt an ankle while warming up at the vault. She was helped off the mat and subbed by Leann Wong.

“My ankle just ... popped,” Roberson said.

Jones then kicked off the competition smoothly for the Americans with a Double Twist Yurchenko, with only a small hop. Wong responded to the last-minute call with a clean effort before Biles opted for the slightly safer “Cheng” vault rather than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmFMXk3WQow">Yurchenko Double Pike she performed during qualifying on Sunday.</a>

The Americans amassed 42.966 points and were second behind China after the first rotation following the Chinese gymnasts' excellent display on uneven bars.

Biles and her teammates then bested their Chinese opponents’ performance on bars as they took the overall lead with a margin of 1.467 points. They increased it a bit further after the beam — despite a sixth-place finish on that apparatus — as Biles made up for the modest 11.700 Wong received by scoring 14.300 with a solid routine.

Biles capped off a successful night for the U.S team with a spectacular floor routine rewarded by a 15.166.

Biles is competing at her first international competition following a two-year absence. Her previous appearance was at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics, where she was hampered by a bout with a mental block known as “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2020-tokyo-olympics-gymnastics-simone-biles-twisties-9a0a4d25bb485ab0a2b237c4847f09ce">the twisties</a>&nbsp;” that gymnasts can experience while in the air, and withdrew from several events.

Now she's back in the same city that catapulted her to international fame a decade ago, winning the first of her five world all-around titles as a 16-year-old prodigy.

“Each and every time you are crowned world champion, it feels a little bit different,” Biles said. “I'm still surprised that I'm still going, I'm 26, I'm a little bit older. It's different, but it's exciting.”

Biles, who posted an overall score of 58.732 points, is also the favorite to add a sixth all-around title on Friday, although she will likely face a strong challenge from Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, the reigning world all-around champion. The event finals are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Andrade led Brazil to its first medal ever in the women's team competition. The French team, spurred on by the hundreds of fans cheering for them, secured their first women’s team medal at the world championships since a silver in 1950.

Kansas gymnast helps U.S. win gold at world championships

Crawl to End Alz, a bar crawl, is planned for Saturday, October 28 to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Hays.

MANHATTAN — October is&nbsp;National Pet Wellness Month, and K-State veterinarian Susan Nelson is sharing tips to foster&nbsp;a healthy lifestyle for furry family members.

"Pet wellness entails what we do at home to care for pets as well as the medical care given by your veterinarian,"&nbsp;said Nelson,&nbsp;clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>.&nbsp;

"From regular check-ups to maintaining a balanced diet, ensuring exercise and addressing mental health needs, it's crucial to give pets the care and attention they deserve."

According to Nelson, incorporating preventive measures&nbsp;—&nbsp;such as vaccinations, regular vet visits, dental care and appropriate nutrition&nbsp;—&nbsp;keeps&nbsp;pets in optimal health, preventing potential illnesses and&nbsp;preparing them for long and&nbsp;fulfilling&nbsp;lives.&nbsp;She said mental stimulation, companionship and a loving environment are equally vital for their overall well-being.

K-State veterinarian shares tips for Pet Wellness Month 

Dean Scott, 85, died on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at his home in Ness City. He was born on November 11, 1937 at Dighton the son of Richard Earl and Hazel Alberta (Leonard) Scott. 

He married JoAnn Mack on October 21, 1965 at Mesa, Arizona.

Dean graduated from Dighton High School with the class of 1955. 

He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. After his discharge he returned to Dighton before taking computer training education. He moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where he was a Computer Programmer for Northern Arizona University and then later become involved in real estate in Flagstaff. 

After retiring he moved to Ness City. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed playing golf.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn Scott and brother Alan and Marsha Scott of Dighton.

Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Dighton Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Jennifer Bradford officiating. Military honors will be by 1st Infantry Honor Guard of Fort Riley and American Legion Post # 190 Honor Guard.

Gregg Douglas Cooper, 74, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 3,2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex. Gregg was born in Hoxie, Kansas, April 25, 1949, to Mark and Rose (Meier) Cooper. 

He grew up in Hoxie, Kansas and attended the Hoxie Schools, graduating from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1967. 

After graduation, Gregg entered the United States Navy. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier off the cost of Vietnam. He served his country for five years.

 </figure>April 25, 1949 - October 3, 2023Gregg Douglas Cooper, 74, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 3,2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex. Gregg was born in Hoxie, Kansas, April 25, 1949, to Mark and Rose (Meier) Cooper. He grew up in Hoxie, Kansas and attended the Hoxie Schools, graduating from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1967. After graduation, Gregg entered the United States Navy. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier off the cost of Vietnam. He served his country for five years. Gregg married Carol Ostmeyer on April 23, 1969, at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie. They celebrated 54 years of marriage. Gregg and Carol made their home in Hoxie where they raised their three sons.Gregg worked at Heim TV and Appliance installing and repairing HVAC systems among other services until he retired. Gregg was never idle, after retirement he continued to do HVAC installation and repairs. Gregg and Carol enjoyed camping in their RV at regional lakes until they found their second home at Webster Lake. They would spend their summers at Webster Lake. Fishing was another activity Gregg really loved. In Gregg’s eyes there was nothing better than camping, fishing, and visiting with friends and family at the lake. The loves of his life were his wife, sons, and grandchildren.Gregg is survived by his wife Carol of Hoxie, Kansas; sons Daryl Cooper of Hill City, Kansas, Scott Cooper (Tasha) of Hoxie, Kansas, Doug Cooper (Emily) of Overland Park, Kansas; brothers Bruce Cooper (Jeree) of Hoisington, Kansas, Brad Cooper (Becky) of Newton, Kansas; sister Marsha Moss of Hoxie, Kansas; grandchildren Josh Taylor, Cayle Taylor, Zach Cooper, Carley Cooper, Rose Cooper, and Luke Cooper; great-grandchildren Kadance, Harper, Jaxsen, and Kendal Jo.He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Rose Cooper.A Catholic mass and burial will be held at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas, Friday, October 6, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. with inurnment to follow the service in the St. Frances Cabrini Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the vigil service and rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to the Sheridan County Benefit Walk, St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, or the Friends of Webster State Park.
