“We welcome our newest members to the Council and are excited to have them join this dedicated team of leaders who are committed to improving health in Kansas,” said Miranda Steele, Council Chair. “The Council’s mission is to encourage increased physical activity, nutrition and tobacco use prevention, and we carry out this work through advisement and awareness activities in partnership with governments, businesses, schools and others to promote healthy lifestyles.”

Callie Dyer is the Executive Director of the Finney County Community Health Coalition, Inc. Dyer was recently elected to the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition Board of Director’s. She serves as an Advisory Council member for the Social Emotional Learning Council and the Wellness Committee for USD 457. Dyer is active in WorkWell Kansas and works with local employers to get involved and practice WorkWell Kansas wellness plans.

Travis Rickford, Rawlins County, is the Executive Director of LiveWell Northwest Kansas where he creates, manages and leads initiatives to address issues related to health and early childhood development for 15 counties in Northwest Kansas. During the past 14 years, Rickford has worked with urban, rural and frontier counties, communities and neighborhoods to identify and implement initiatives that improve the quality of life. He was an active participant in the healthy communities movement in Kansas and has worked extensively with community stakeholders to build an infrastructure that supported opportunities to be physically active, have access to fresh produce and live in tobacco-free environments.

Becky Tuttle serves as the District II City of Wichita Council Member. She has more than 25 years of professional experience engaging community partners through grassroots local coalition efforts focusing on tobacco, physical activity, healthy eating, oral health, fetal infant mortality and worksite wellness. Most Tuttle’s experience has focused on policy and environmental changes to improve the health of communities. Tuttle has a passion for promoting physical activity and good nutrition for every generation to come.

Judy Works is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at KS HealthWorks, PA in Iola. Throughout her professional career she has always promoted healthy lifestyles with individual patients. Five years ago, she started the Monarch HealthWorks program that strives to implement change to promote a healthy workplace environment and improve workplace wellness. Works received the Governor’s Council on Fitness 2019 Organizational Kansas Health Champion Award for exceptional efforts to model, promote and encourage health and fitness in the workplace.

Rawlins Co. man appointed to Kan. fitness council

Gloria Hagen, age 64 of Hays, Kansas 
passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Hays Medical Center. Gloria
 was born on October 24, 1956 to Oscar and Betty (Sparks) Hagen. She 
attended schools in Ellis including a couple of early years at Star 
School, which was a country school. She also went to Hutchinson 
Community College.&nbsp;

Gloria held long-term jobs, including 
Klines, Stage and most recently Walmart. As a member of the Ellis VFW 
Auxiliary. After her mother passed away she took over putting out 
Auxiliary flags on Memorial Day weekend for members who had passed away.
 Gloria was a die-hard animal lover. There were times when driving out 
in the country, she would pull over and move a turtle to the side of the
 road so it would not get hit.

Gloria is survived by brothers Rex 
Hagen of Ellis and Ralph Sparks of Hays; sisters, Ellen Berry and Annys 
Pfannenstiel both of Hays; nephews, Justin Berry and Russell Berry both 
of Colby, Jody Hagen (Debbie) of Hays; niece, Laurel Sparks Beebe of 
Washington State; great nephew, Krystian Hagen; great nieces, Mykaela 
Hagen, Annzlee Berry, Tristan Jay, and Maigen Jay.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew, Benjamin Sparks and a brother-in-law Danny Pfannenstiel.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday February 9, 2021 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Ellis. Gloria Hagen

Mary Catherine (Brown) Doherty was born March 1, 1934, to John and 
Johnnie Lee (Hegwood) Brown in Tennyson,&nbsp;TX and died peacefully at home 
surrounded by her loving family in Sherman, TX.&nbsp;

She grew up in the Robert E Lee and Bronte, TX areas. The family also
 lived in New Mexico and then to NW Kansas in 1953. Mary graduated from 
Bronte HS in 1951, and then attended Fort Hays College.

She married Harry "Wayne" Doherty in Clayton on Nov 11, 1956, and they
 had 4 daughters.&nbsp; They lived in the Delvale and Clayton communities.&nbsp;

Mary grew up in times when work ethics were of great value.&nbsp; She was 
always a hard worker. As a child growing up in West Texas,&nbsp;she shared 
stories of picking cotton until her hands were bloodied. &nbsp;As a young 
woman, Mary always planted large gardens and canned her produce that 
lasted all year.&nbsp; Her girls complained,&nbsp;but always helped get the 
canning done.

For many years, Wayne and Mary had a custom harvest crew. They took 
the girls and traveled from Texas to North Dakota every year.&nbsp; In the 
fall, they stayed close to home and harvested milo, corn and oats.

Wayne and Mary always had livestock,&nbsp;whether it was milking cows or a
 farrow to finish operation raising hogs. They had a farm near Jennings 
and had irrigated alfalfa and milo.&nbsp; &nbsp;It was a family affair moving 
irrigation pipe by hand with a bunch of whiney girls!!

Mary and Wayne were devoted active members of the Clayton UM Church.&nbsp;
 &nbsp;They spent years of dedicated service supporting their girls in the 
Prairie Dog 4-H club.

For many years they operated Doherty Repair,&nbsp;where Wayne worked on 
every type of vehicle and Mary was the bookkeeper. They later bought and
 operated Clayton Lumber &amp; Hardware for many years.

Wayne passed away on May 6, 1980, and later Mary moved to&nbsp;Sherman, TX in 1985.&nbsp;

Mary worked as a housekeeper and sold Watkins for many years. She 
made new Christian friendships that lead to years of fellowship and 
happiness.&nbsp; Mary attended Christian Classes and received her Pastoral 
Degree, which she was proud of.&nbsp; Mary loved the Lord and devoted her 
lifetime to serving our Savior. She was a self-taught piano player, and 
loved to play her favorite hymns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was predeceased by her husband,&nbsp;Wayne, her parents, 
siblings,&nbsp;William Brown,&nbsp;Wanda Holden, Lloyd Brown, and Lena Laughin, 
numerous brother and sisters in laws,&nbsp;nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her girls: Charlotte Doherty, Scott City, KS, 
Annette (and Vic) Goeken, Carthage, MO, Yuvonne (and Lee) Kraft, Ransom,
 KS, Carla Dansby, Sherman, TX; Grandkids: Mindy (and Ryan) Schumacher, 
Scranton, ND, Ryan (and Valarie) Kraft, Lyons, KS, Kelly ( and Sara) 
Goeken, Carthage,&nbsp; MO, Codi Kraft ( and fiance, Brian Jantz), Wichita,&nbsp;

Mary Catherine Doherty

Francis "Frank" Gatschet, 85, of Manhattan, KS, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021. Frank was born in Hays, Kansas on October 4, 1935, to the late Agnes
 (Brull) and George Gatschet. He grew up in the farming community with
 hordes of neighborhood kids, serving his church and trying to stay 
ahead of getting caught from whatever the almost daily bout of mischief 
he would create.
 Frank graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy, Hays, KS, in 
1953. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as a staff sergeant and 
air-force jet mechanic instructor during the Korean War. Stationed at 
Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, he laid eyes on the most 
petite, prettiest creature he had ever seen, a nursing student, Amy 
Hudson. They married in Denver on December 29, 1959. Shortly thereafter,
 they moved to Hays where Frank obtained a business degree from Fort 
Hays State University. 
 He started working for Duckwall Stores and moved his young family of

grew their family to seven children. Frank managed the Hutchinson 
Duckwall store for six years, then was promoted to manager of Duckwall’s
 larger discount store format, Alco, in Newton. Therefor less than a 
year, Alco asked Frank to move to Roswell, New Mexico, to take on an 
even bigger project there. Frank flew to Roswell on several occasions 
to check out the town and the store there. While considering yet 
another move, he and Amy were disappointed that there were no Catholic 
schools in Roswell. In anticipation of their move, they purchased 
religious texts and Baltimore Catechism books so that Amy could continue
 their children’s formation of the faith that she and Frank treasured. 
At the last minute, Frank found work at another retail company, 
TG&amp;Y, and moved the family to Wichita instead. Enter child number 
eight. He soon was recruited by a maverick entrepreneur from Arkansas, 
Sam Walton, who was building a fledgling retail chain called Walmart. 
With seven children, it was a scary proposition to jump ship of an 
established company into the unknown waters of this new startup. He took
 a 40% pay cut as a TG&amp;Y store manager to manager trainee as he 
entered the Walmart manager training program. He and his family trekked 
to Rolla, Missouri. About 18 months later, Walmart charged Frank with 
opening a new store in Pittsburg, Kansas. Success there brought more 
opportunity and more responsibility, tasked in turning around a 
struggling Walmart store in Junction City, bringing on yet another 
relocation. This time, instead of moving to Junction City, he planted 
his family in Manhattan, with his eye on the prize of managing Walmart 
Store #35 in Manhattan, Kansas. There, the last two of his 10 children 
were born. Frank and Amy called Manhattan home. Frank mentored hundreds 
of Walmart associates. He took pride in hiring K-State students. They 
proved to be a loyal, productive, smart workforce. After about 10 years,
 Frank was promoted to district manager of Northeast Kansas. He was 
offered many executive-level promotions above district manager. 
Accepting any one of them over the years would have required yet another
 relocation. Frank planted his feet firmly in Manhattan. It was where 
he wanted his family to grow.
 Frank fell in love with Kansas State University, especially the 
Pride of Wildcat Land, the K-State Marching Band, where his oldest 
daughter, Teri, was a flag girl. He and then-Band Director Phil Hewitt 
became good friends. In the late 1970s, Frank single-handedly raised 
over $100,000 for new band uniforms. He did so by selling to local 
businesses upscale, custom purple and gold clocks. The clocks featured a
 caricature of Willie the Wildcat in a marching band uniform, designed 
by his daughter, Amy. Frank loved playing the K-State marching band’s 
albums, waving his hands at the stereo as if directing imaginary 
musicians and keeping time to Wabash Cannonball. 
 Frank couldn’t wait for a good, old-fashioned snowstorm! He would 
dawn his snowsuit and break out the snowblower to clear the sidewalks on
 both sides of his entire block, and sometimes as far as the sidewalks 
on the next block over, which led straight to Seven Dolors Catholic 
Church providing a safe passageway for his wife to trek to daily Mass. 
He was proud of his house, which he fondly called Pierre Manor, open to 
any friend, neighbor kid, relative, and sometimes people just down on 
their luck. He seemed happiest at Christmas when the house burst at the 
seams with kids and grandkids, countless gifts, and boundless joy.
 Frank retired from Walmart in 1995. He held a few part-time jobs to 
keep him busy and out of Amy’s way. He delivered cars for Briggs Auto 
Group. Mostly, in retirement, Frank liked to spend time at home. He 
tended his lawn, in perpetual pursuit of the moles that menaced his 
front yard. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus,
 and a faithful member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church. 
 Frank is preceded in death by his wife, Amy (Hudson) Gatschet, granddaughter Isabella Gatschet, and sister, Jeanne Winter. 
 Francis is survived by six daughters; Teri (Kelvin) Belin of 
Manhattan, KS; Amy Jo (Randy) Carlson of Lawrence, KS; Mary Lynn 
(Enrique Leon) Gatschet of Coronado, CA; Renee (Jarod) Allerheilegen of 
Medina, MN; Christy (Matthew) Russell of Otego, NY; Diana (Jeremy Short)
 Gatschet of Brooklyn, NY; four sons; Fr. Fred Gatschet of Salina, KS; 
Tom (Katherine) Gatschet of Topeka, KS; Charlie (Kathy) Gatschet of 
Olathe, KS; and Joe Gatschet of Pascagoula, MS. 
 Francis is also survived by 23 grandchildren; and brothers, Tom, Paul, and George Gatschet of Hays, KS. 
 Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. at the
 Seven Dolors Catholic Church followed by Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Mass 
at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan,

 </figure>Francis "Frank" Gatschet, 85, of Manhattan, KS, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021. Frank was born in Hays, Kansas on October 4, 1935, to the late Agnes
 (Brull) and George Gatschet. He grew up in the farming community with
 hordes of neighborhood kids, serving his church and trying to stay 
ahead of getting caught from whatever the almost daily bout of mischief 
he would create.
 Frank graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy, Hays, KS, in 
1953. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as a staff sergeant and 
air-force jet mechanic instructor during the Korean War. Stationed at 
Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, he laid eyes on the most 
petite, prettiest creature he had ever seen, a nursing student, Amy 
Hudson. They married in Denver on December 29, 1959. Shortly thereafter,
 they moved to Hays where Frank obtained a business degree from Fort 
Hays State University. 
 He started working for Duckwall Stores and moved his young family of
 four to Pratt, Kansas in 1964, then to Hutchinson, in 1966, where they 
grew their family to seven children. Frank managed the Hutchinson

Francis 'Frank' Gatschet

Beatta Marie Robben, 79, of Grinnell, died unexpectedly after a brief 
illness Friday, January 8, 2021, at Great Plains Health, in North 
Platte, NE. 

She was born on April 30, 1941, at home in rural Logan 
County, to George and Mary Ann (Ziegler) Maurath. Being the oldest 
daughter, she spent a lot of her time growing up helping with the 
household chores and caring for her younger siblings while her mother 
kept busy helping with the farm chores. It was during these years that 
Beatta discovered her gift of cooking and sewing. She was a 1959 
graduate of Oakley High School and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree of
 Education in Home Economics from Fort Hays State University. 

At one of 
the dances at the Angelus K of C Hall, Beatta met the love of her life, 
Charlie Robben. They were married in February of 1965 at St. Joseph 
Catholic Church in Oakley. A year later, Beatta and Charlie welcomed 
their only child, Doug, into the world. That year she also began 
teaching Home Economics and Bachelor Survival classes at Grinnell High 
School. Over the years, countless students benefited from her expertise 
and commitment, always striving to get her students ready to be 
self-sufficient in the kitchen or behind the sewing machine. After 
officially retiring from teaching in 1985, Beatta still enjoyed 
substitute teaching whenever she could and tending to her home. She 
enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and quilting. 

A favorite picture in 
Beatta's house advertised, "Grandma's Kitchen- Open 24 hours a Day,"&nbsp; which was about the truth, and she always made sure her cookie jar was 
never empty. Nieces and nephews visiting the farm always looked forward 
to one of her delicious homemade cinnamon rolls. Beatta's pride and joy 
were her grandchildren. She spent much of her later years following them
 in sports and attending all their activities. She was a member of St. 
Paul Catholic Church, in Angelus and St. Ann’s Altar Society. 
Beatta was preceded in death by her parents and infant sisters, Arlene and Mary. 
She is survived by her husband Charles; son Doug (Kim) Robben; 
grandchildren, Sean, Samantha and Nicholas Robben; siblings, Clem 
Maurath, Elmer Maurath, Laverna (Elmer) Hartman, Laura (Bill) Goetz and 
Rosalee (Joe) Heskett and many nieces and nephews. 
Visitation is 6-7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021, at St. Paul 
Catholic Church, Angelus, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is

The United Way of Ellis County is at 80 percent of its goal — a little more than $300,000 raised — with less than a month left in its campaign.

Erica Berges, executive director, said most of the employer campaigns have concluded, so any additional funds would likely come from small businesses or individuals.

"I am happy with where we are at this point at $300,000," she said, "but we always want to make our goal so we can give out as much money as we can to the agencies, because they need it."&nbsp;

Berges said the organization was told by national United Way officials to expect a decrease in funds raised this year.

Many individuals and businesses have experienced financial losses due to the pandemic.

The United Way is also experiencing a downward trend in donations as older workers who donated through their companies's giving campaigns retire. Berges said not only does the United Way lose the donation from that individual, but sometimes also an employer's matching gift.

Berges said the agency is trying to encourage younger workers to give, but that transition is slow.

"I know we worked really hard trying to get to those younger donors," Berges said, "so I want to continue on that. ... I think that is really where we need to get our message across to the younger generation who is just starting out in the workplace."

The goal for this year's campaign is $380,000. Berges said she had hoped the local chapter would reach at least $350,000, but she is not optimistic at this point the campaign will reach that milestone.

The local chapter raised&nbsp;$356,000 in its general campaign in 2019. That was supplemented by an additional&nbsp;$22,223 donation from the Schmidt Foundation.

Fewer donations mean fewer funds available to distribute to the United Way's partner agencies, Berges said, many of which are seeing increased need as a result of the pandemic.

"There are still a lot of people who are out there struggling," Berges said. "Even if they are back to work, there are still others who aren't or they have had to miss work because they were quarantined."

Berges said her office has been regularly referring people in need of rent, utility and food assistance to community agencies.

Fewer funds in their allocations, will mean those agencies will be able to provide fewer services and assist fewer people, Berges said.

"Some people weren't affected by this," Berges said. "I am probably one of them. We went home and worked, but nothing else changed in the dynamic of our lives. If you weren't affected, give a little bit more, because there were a lot of people who were and are still struggling."

Some of the United Way's partner agencies received funds through the CARES Act to address increased needs as a result of COVID, but agencies are still being forced to modify or cancel fundraisers as a result of the pandemic.

Agencies will learn their allocations in the second or third week of February.

In 2020, United Way of Ellis County supported 23 programs provided by 18 partner agencies

They included: American Red Cross Big Brothers Big Sisters Cancer Council Catholic Charities Center for Life Experience Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation City of Ellis pool project CASA Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas Early Childhood Connections First Call for Help Hays Area Children's Center Hays Senior Center KVC Wheatland Hospital Options Parents and Children Together Western Kansas Association on the Concerns of the Disabled Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center

Any donations made through the end of January will count toward the 2020 campaign.

Ross Lynn Jamison, 65, of WaKeeney, KS passed away on Thursday,

(Buchholz) on January 31, 1955.

Ross lived his entire life in WaKeeney, graduating from Trego 
Community High School in 1973.&nbsp; He married Willanette (Weber) and to 
this union were born three sons.&nbsp; Ross and his dad owned and operated 
Jamison Motor Co. for many years.&nbsp; He was the Transportation Director 
for USD 208 for 29 years, retiring in 2018. &nbsp;Everyone loved hearing his 
funny voice messages when canceling school because of snow.&nbsp;In 2000, 
Ross married Nancy (Keith) uniting two families for more than 20 years, 
blessed with 12 grandchildren, traveling to countless sporting events, 
school activities, and trips to Kansas City, capturing it all with his 
camera. Ross has left his family with many pictures and videos that will
 last a lifetime.

Ross is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; sons, Dustin (Rene)
 Jamison and grandchildren, Juliana and Vincent of Mission, KS, and 
Jarod (Kami) Jamison and grandchildren, Ella and Emry of Cleveland, MO, 
and Preston (Valerie) Jamison and grandchildren, Brooklyn, Kennedy, and 
Adalynn of Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by Scott (Kerrie) Keith
 and grandchildren Jaida and Jordyn of WaKeeney and Tammi (Daniel) Wynn 
and grandchildren Adrian, Ashton, and Acelyn of WaKeeney; sister Connie 
(Gary) White of Sharon Springs KS; sister-in-law Kaye Schwartz (Mark) of
 Buhler, KS, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ross was preceded 
in death by his parents; Morris and Gladys Jamison; in-laws Pete and 
Betty Swank of Osborne, KS.

Ross was a member of the First United Methodist Church in WaKeeney 
where he was a trustee, operated the sound system, sang in the choir, 
and rang in the bell choir.&nbsp; One of his passions was his membership in 
the High Plains Barbershop Chorus of Hays and singing baritone in the 
quartets, Uncalled Four and Prairie Timbre.

Ross will be most remembered for his fun-loving spirit and 
personality, practical jokes, personalized answering machine messages, 
and love for his family. He dove into life (and the pool) and was not 
the type to sit on the sidelines but would rather join in the fun – 
games, family competitions, and of course costumes or accessories to get
 a laugh. Ross had an infectious smile and is remembered for his 
selfless acts, such as: driving 10-hours round trip to show up for the 
big (or not so big) moments; gas and detail your car; surprise money; 
home projects for family and friends; trips and more trips to the 
grocery store; and checking off the “honey do” list. He was a detailed, 
tireless worker who taught his boys work ethic by example.&nbsp;Ross had a 
serious side too. He was genuinely concerned for others, guided us to 
make safe decisions, and was always well prepared in making road trips, 
with a plan, a back-up plan and a detailed weather forecast to ensure 
everyone arrived safely.

There are no words to sum up a man’s life nor a single defining 
moment. Ross Jamison left us too soon, but will be remembered by a 
compilation of moments, actions, and words that demonstrate his 
character and unconditional love for his family and friends.

A private family memorial service will be held in the coming weeks 
with plans for a celebration of life with friends in the future. In leu 
of flowers, please make a random act of kindness to a friend, neighbor 
or even a complete stranger in memory of the beloved Grampy Ross!

The directions to a desolate farmstead northwest of Syracuse led me through mile-after-mile of huge open crop fields and immense rocky pastures where the only green plant life seemed to be seas of thriving Yuca. Occasionally, buildings appeared on the horizon several miles away only to disappear behind the next hill. If I wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, it was certainly just over the next rise.

I traveled here to spend a couple days with a friend, John Borror and to help him on his western KS trapline. There in cattle country, ranchers rely on trapping to help control coyotes and other predators that prey of young spring calves. I finally spotted the grain bins he told me to look for and drove back a long dusty lane to find his trailer set up in front a big hay shed. He converted a long horse trailer into living quarters in the front and storage for freezers and trapping supplies in the rear.&nbsp;

John has trapped around his home in southeastern KS since he was a kid. When he married and started a family, his responsibility as a husband and a dad, plus a full-time job forced a lot of his trapping to be done in the dark, either before or after work. In 2010, with his 4 girls long-since on their own, and retired from his job, John began pursuing a dream of running long, extensive trap lines in other states. The first was in Arizona, then New Mexico and Texas and this was his third-year trapping around Syracuse, KS.&nbsp;

Each morning was a new adventure as we wound our way from trap site to trap site. Traps near the barely-flowing Arkansas River yielded mostly bobcats and an occasional coyote that travel the weedy field edges and tractor paths lined with dead tamaracks as they hunt for rabbits and other small game. Farther from the river, traps placed along crop land where field edges meet weedy cover or CRP, and in field corners that are natural “funnel” areas from one type of habitat to another, catch traveling coyotes, swift foxes and badgers. In the immense, sprawling, rocky rolling tracts of land known in that country as pastures, traps set at gateways, along cattle trails and in corners also catch coyotes, swift foxes and badgers. All these trap sites also attract occasional skunks that live in borrowed burrows, and raccoons that live who-knows-where since trees out there are as scarce as rain. At last estimate, John has trapping permission on nearly 40, 000 acres of land around the Syracuse area. One wonders how that amount of land could be trapped, but a 1,000-acre pasture might only have suitable sites for ten or a dozen traps, mostly at gateways and around edges.&nbsp;

At the end of each day, animals are skinned and the pelts layered carefully in a big freezer until he can finish them later. Numerous other parts of the animal are used also; various glands are harvested for making predator trapping bait, skulls of all animals except coyotes are kept to be cleaned and sold to colleges for studies and to collectors, entire bobcat carcasses are frozen, also to be used in making predator bait and bobcat paws are kept for sale to jewelry makers who use the claws.

John figures he has harvested well over one thousand animals on his extensive out-of-state and western KS trap lines. The most exciting was a mountain lion caught in Arizona that was released back into the wild with the help of Arizona wildlife officers. John has also put together a collection of more than 350 antique traps that can be seen at the Wilson County Old Iron Club in Fredonia, KS.

When I asked him why he travels all those miles to trap, he replied “From my years of trapping at home, I know each year where I will set each trap, and it gets repetitive, more like a job, so I like to see and trap new places.” When I left John a week ago, he had caught 70 coyotes, 9 badgers, 8 raccoons, 6 swift foxes, 6 skunks and a porcupine. Exploring Outdoors Kansas: Trapping the Wild West

Difficult economic times mean some donors have less to give this holiday season, but more families are in need of the services provided by local charities, said Erica Berges, United Way of Ellis County executive director.

Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global effort to encourage charitable giving.

Berges encouraged local residents to give today during Giving Tuesday and through the holiday season to help fill the revenue gap for charities.

The United Way is in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign, and Berges said giving is lagging behind where it was at the same time last year.

The campaign is only about 30 percent to goal, whereas in 2019 the campaign was 60 percent to goal at the end of November. The&nbsp;&nbsp;United Way is still waiting on several large employers's pledges to be received, but Berges said she is concerned about the numbers.

Many charities have also have seen decreases in revenue because they were unable to conduct fundraisers this year because of the pandemic.

"We are really needing the community to pull together and give this year," Berges said.

If United Way does not reach it's fundraising goal, less money will be available to distribute to its partner agencies and the agencies will be able to help fewer people, Beges said, adding there is a great need for services at this time.

"The support local, shop local is so important, so is giving local," she said.

On Thursday Dec. 3 there will be a Dine Out Day at Professor's and on Dec. 14 there will be a Dine Day at Arthur's Pizza in Ellis with a portion of the proceeds on both days benefiting the United Way.&nbsp;

First Call for Help: Families struggle with the basics

First Call for Help, which provides food, rent and utility assistance, has seen an increase in need for its service, Linda Mills, executive director, said.

Many families had one or more household members out of work during the shutdown, and although many of those employees have gone back to work, families are struggling to catch up on bills.

In addition, families have been hit with losses of income because of quarantines.&nbsp;

First Call for Help received funds from the CARES Act to help cover the costs of expanded services.&nbsp;However, the longer the pandemic continues, the more need Mills said she thinks the agency will see.

First Call for Help is in the process of delivering non-perishable food from the annual Thanksgiving Feast grocery drive, so it does not need food donations at this time. However, the agency can always use diapers.

In addition to raising funds to support ongoing needs in the community, First Call for Help is also in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $250,000 for its <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/07/30/first-call-for-help-launches-housing-fundraising-campaign-2/">First Step transitional housing program</a>.

The agency is about half way to its fundraising goal. Concrete work on the project has already begun at the First Call building on 13th Street.

When the project is completed, it will include a four-bedroom housing unit with a small kitchen/common area, as well as a laundry area.&nbsp;Each room will be able to house up to three people.

CASA: Raising funds harder during pandemic

Tabitha Keith, CASA of the High Plains executive director, said COVID has limited CASA's fundraising opportunities.

The organization, which provides advocates in court for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect, conducts its annual No Show Tea in conjunction with Giving Tuesday.

It is a mail and social media fundraiser, and you don't need to leave your house to participate.

More than 100 children annually are removed from their homes within CASA of the High Plains coverage area, which includes Ellis, Rooks, Trego and Gove counties.

"With your help, we can continue to provide essential services to abused and neglected children in the court system," Keith said.

ARC Park pushing to reach goal for playground, splash pad

The ARC Park project is 6 percent away from its goal for the the first two phases, an accessible playground and splash pad.

If the group can finish the fundraising for the first two phases soon, equipment for the splash pad can be ordered in time for a scheduled opening by July 4, said Brent Kaiser, Arc of the Central Plains activities director.

"We think [the splash pad] is really possible by July 4," Kaiser said. "A couple of our big donations were contingent on 'Let's get this done by next summer.' That's our goal, and I really think we're going to get there. It is just a matter of getting those last dollars to come in to be able to cover it."

The equipment has already been received for the accessible playground. It is waiting to be installed.

"For us there a couple of pieces to this," Kaiser said of Giving Tuesday. "No. 1&nbsp; is raising the funds. That is a really important piece to all of this because we know we have to have the funds to get there, but the other thing is to continue to raise awareness about our project, to continue to get it out there."

Kaiser said he and others with the project are aware some people in the community still don't know about the project.

"We know there are people who are looking to make donations at the end of the year," he said, "and we just want to be on that radar if possible. If not, then there are so many other great non-profits in our community as well."

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostDifficult economic times mean some donors have less to give this holiday season, but more families are in need of the services provided by local charities, said Erica Berges, United Way of Ellis County executive director.Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global effort to encourage charitable giving.Berges encouraged local residents to give today during Giving Tuesday and through the holiday season to help fill the revenue gap for charities.The United Way is in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign, and Berges said giving is lagging behind where it was at the same time last year.<figure>

 </figure>The campaign is only about 30 percent to goal, whereas in 2019 the campaign was 60 percent to goal at the end of November. The&nbsp;&nbsp;United Way is still waiting on several large employers's pledges to be received, but Berges said she is concerned about the numbers.The agency's goal this year is $380,000.Many charities have also have seen decreases in revenue because they were unable to conduct fundraisers this year because of the pandemic."We are really needing the community to pull together and give this year," Berges said.If United Way does not reach it's fundraising goal, less money will be available to distribute to its partner agencies and the agencies will be able to help fewer people, Beges said, adding there is a great need for services at this time."The support local, shop local is so important, so is giving local," she said.You can see a list of the United Way's partner agencies for 2020 by <a href="https://www.liveunited.us/partner-agencies">clicking here</a>.&nbsp;<h2>United Way: Many ways to give</h2>You can donate to the Unite Way at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.liveunited.us/">www.liveunited.us/</a>,&nbsp;bring a donation to the United Way office at 205 E. See the United Way's website for more details.<h2>First Call for Help: Families struggle with the basics</h2>First Call for Help, which provides food, rent and utility assistance, has seen an increase in need for its service, Linda Mills, executive director, said.Many families had one or more household members out of work during the shutdown, and although many of those employees have gone back to work, families are struggling to catch up on bills.In addition, families have been hit with losses of income because of quarantines.&nbsp;First Call for Help received funds from the CARES Act to help cover the costs of expanded services.&nbsp;However, the longer the pandemic continues, the more need Mills said she thinks the agency will see.First Call for Help is in the process of delivering non-perishable food from the annual Thanksgiving Feast grocery drive, so it does not need food donations at this time. However, the agency can always use diapers.In addition to raising funds to support ongoing needs in the community, First Call for Help is also in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $250,000 for its <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/07/30/first-call-for-help-launches-housing-fundraising-campaign-2/">First Step transitional housing program</a>.The agency is about half way to its fundraising goal. Concrete work on the project has already begun at the First Call building on 13th Street.When the project is completed, it will include a four-bedroom housing unit with a small kitchen/common area, as well as a laundry area.&nbsp;Each room will be able to house up to three people.To donate to First Call for Help or the First Step program go to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/">www.firstcallelliscounty.com/</a>&nbsp;or mail checks or deliver them in person to 607 E. 13th St., Hays, 67601.  </figure><h2>CASA: Raising funds harder during pandemic</h2>Tabitha Keith, CASA of the High Plains executive director, said COVID has limited CASA's fundraising opportunities.The organization, which provides advocates in court for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect, conducts its annual No Show Tea in conjunction with Giving Tuesday.It is a mail and social media fundraiser, and you don't need to leave your house to participate.More than 100 children annually are removed from their homes within CASA of the High Plains coverage area, which includes Ellis, Rooks, Trego and Gove counties."With your help, we can continue to provide essential services to abused and neglected children in the court system," Keith said.Donors can send funds via mail to&nbsp;107 W. 13th St., Hays, KS 67601 or online by <a href="https://events.eventgroove.com/event/2020-No-Show-Tea-Party-45850?fbclid=IwAR2tgba5uvCTeTxPp7Kqc0WCOMtnWHZkflNOfwOsxfghLLN16PP7wOLd2hU">clicking here</a>.&nbsp;If you can't give financially, you could give of your time.  </figure><h2>ARC Park pushing to reach goal for playground, splash pad</h2>The ARC Park project is 6 percent away from its goal for the the first two phases, an accessible playground and splash pad.If the group can finish the fundraising for the first two phases soon, equipment for the splash pad can be ordered in time for a scheduled opening by July 4, said Brent Kaiser, Arc of the Central Plains activities director."We think [the splash pad] is really possible by July 4," Kaiser said. "A couple of our big donations were contingent on 'Let's get this done by next summer.' That's our goal, and I really think we're going to get there. It is just a matter of getting those last dollars to come in to be able to cover it."The equipment has already been received for the accessible playground. It is waiting to be installed."For us there a couple of pieces to this," Kaiser said of Giving Tuesday. "No. 1&nbsp; is raising the funds. That is a really important piece to all of this because we know we have to have the funds to get there, but the other thing is to continue to raise awareness about our project, to continue to get it out there."Kaiser said he and others with the project are aware some people in the community still don't know about the project."We know there are people who are looking to make donations at the end of the year," he said, "and we just want to be on that radar if possible. If not, then there are so many other great non-profits in our community as well."<figure>

Winners:  Chicken Soup for the Soul book “Age Is Just A Number" with KZ Country

On January 2nd, 1935, in the small rural Western Kansas town of Oakley, Noe (later changed to Noah) and Eulalia (Wolfe) Frazier welcomed their third child and second daughter into the family.&nbsp; They named this little dark-haired girl Beverly June (her dad liked to call her “Bevy June”

Despite being born during the Great Depression and the infamous Dust Bowl Era, Beverly grew up happy.&nbsp; Except for a year in Klamath Falls OR, the family lived all of Beverly’s pre-adult life in Oakley.&nbsp; She was involved in countless community, church and school activities and was Valedictorian of her Oakley High School graduation class.&nbsp; “Bev” as she became known, attended Cottey College in Nevada MO for a year, then Washburn University in Topeka KS for a semester.

While Bev was going to college, her parents moved from Oakley to Hays KS where they owned and operated a motel.&nbsp; She helped her parents by working at the motel the summer of 1954; and she met Roger Faubion that August.&nbsp; While it wasn’t quite love at first sight, it was close:&nbsp; they were married 7 months later on March 5, 1955.&nbsp; To this union were born 3 sons, one died in infancy.

During the next several years the family lived in Hays plus other Kansas towns of Hill City, Goodland and Larned where Roger oversaw large construction projects.&nbsp; When the boys started school, Mom stayed in Hays with them while Dad commuted from wherever his job location took him.

These stay-at-home years gave Bev the opportunity to work for the local Radio/TV station KAYS, at a variety of jobs.&nbsp; Her most memorable jobs there were as host of “Bev’s Party Line” and “Women’s Page” (daily weekday radio programs).&nbsp; Bev was very active in Hays and surrounding community functions:&nbsp; MC for fashions shows; on judging panels for various area competitions; a participant in local talent productions; President of the Lincoln Elementary School PTA; a Director on the State Board of the Kansas Women’s Bowling Association; in charge of the girls summer slow-pitch softball program in Hays; a slow-pitch umpire; and an active member of many other clubs and organizations.

In 1973, the family moved to Arizona.&nbsp; It wasn’t long before Bev decided to get back in the outside work force.&nbsp; She started as a Kelly Girl Temp which led to a permanent position with the Arizona Department of Public Safely eventually as a Supervisor in the CIS Division.&nbsp; After the boys were out of high school and in college, Bev quit her job to go along with Roger when he was sent out of town on construction projects.&nbsp; They enjoyed living in several Arizona cities and towns, plus a year in Albuquerque NM, making many close and lasting friendships along the way.

This ‘vagabond era’ ended in 1989 when Roger and Bev settled in Scottsdale AZ.&nbsp; While there, Bev once again went back to work, this time with Rural/Metro Corporation (fire and ambulance with nationwide operations).&nbsp; She had progressed to the position of Executive Assistant in the Finance Department when she retired in 2000.&nbsp; In the meantime, Roger had established his own business and Bev managed those office duties as well.&nbsp; When Roger retired in 2002, they moved to Solera, an active adult community in Chandler AZ.

At the age of 71 (2006), Bev’s right leg was amputated above the knee.&nbsp; It was a bit of a set-back, or course, but Bev took it all in stride (pun intended) and never let it get her down:&nbsp; she maintained a positive attitude along with her signature love of life.&nbsp; She even named her stump LTH (Less Than Half), her prosthesis Lena (get it?) and her walker Nessy (short for Necessary).&nbsp; Also, hand controls were installed on the car so she could continue to drive (you go girl!).

Bev passed away peacefully in her sleep, on October 27th, 2020. She was at her home with her loved ones. She was 85 years young.&nbsp; She chose to do a full-body donation to scientific research, followed by cremation.&nbsp; There will be no funeral nor memorial service; a Celebration of Life may be held later. In lieu of flowers, Bev requested that any gesture of remembrance be given to your favorite charity in her name – with special thanks and heartfelt appreciation from Bev and her family.

Bev was preceded in death by her husband Roger (2011), their son Brad (2018), their infant son Ralph David (1957), her parents, her brother, two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

Survivors include her cherished family of son Chuck (Gwen) of Sun City AZ, daughter-in-law Jan of Gilbert AZ; sister Dorothy “Dee” Petree of Littleton CO; sister-in-law Sue Faubion of Denver CO; 5 grandchildren: Faith Lochmann of Hays KS, Melissa (Kris) Heddings of Glendale AZ, Marcus (Ashley) Faubion of Cave Creek AZ, Erin (David) Price of Tucson AZ and Matt (Amanda) Faubion of Gilbert AZ; 1 step-granddaughter Tara Fair Smith (Gerald) of Phoenix AZ; 3 great-grandsons: Samuel Heddings, Tristan Faubion and Owen Price; 1 great-granddaughter Jordan Faubion; 1 adopted great-granddaughter Hannah Baxter; 5 step-great-grandchildren: K. J., Jocelyn and Kade Heddings, Austin Sloan and Zaden Collins;&nbsp; 1 step-great-great grandson Kace James Heddings; 1 adopted great-great granddaughter; Indigo Dietz; several nieces, nephews and many extended family members.

Bev served &amp; impacted countless people during her lifetime with fun and an ever-present positive attitude. Especially her loved ones. She is dearly missed and will never be forgotten.&nbsp;

Janet Marie Hoverson was born April 26, 1938, in Almena, KS, to Henry
 C. “Hank” and Christine (Currey)&nbsp; Kusel.&nbsp; She passed away November 13, 
2020 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS, at the 
age of 82.

As a young girl, Janet and her family lived in several locations 
where her dad worked:&nbsp; Almena, Downs, Stockton, Smith Center, and 
Kensington.&nbsp; During her childhood, her best buddy was her older brother,
 James “Jim” Kusel; she also had very fond memories of time spent with 
her cousins.

Her education began in Smith Center, KS; then after moving to 
Kensington while in the sixth grade, she completed her education at 
Kensington, KS, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 
1956.&nbsp; Janet enjoyed high school very much and she was very active.&nbsp; She
 played tenor saxophone in the band, was drum majorette of the marching 
band, sang with the girls glee club and mixed chorus, and was a 
cheerleader for 3 years.&nbsp; During summer months, Janet played town-team 
softball.

Janet’s parents opened a grocery store in Kensington called “Hank’s 
Market”.&nbsp; Both she and her brother, Jim, would help out at the store 
after school, on weekends, and in the summer.&nbsp; She told her family that 
working in the store taught her many valuable lessons, especially to 
always treat people with respect and kindness.&nbsp; She took that lesson to 
heart her entire life.

On April 27, 1958, Janet married Don A. “D.A.” Hoverson in 
Kensington, KS.&nbsp; Don was in the U.S. Army at that time, stationed at Ft.
 Devens, MA.&nbsp; Janet moved to Massachusetts to be with Don during his 
military service.&nbsp; After his discharge from the Army, she and Don 
returned to Kansas and settled in Agra. &nbsp;Their family was blessed with 
the birth of two daughters, Tammy in 1959, and Lori in 1961.&nbsp; In 1962, 
“D.A.” moved his family to a farm located one half mile south of his 
parents.&nbsp; Their family was completed with the birth of another daughter,
 Lynda, in 1963 and a son, Dan, in 1968.&nbsp;

In the spring of 1969, the couple began the process of building a new
 house just east of where they had been living.&nbsp; They moved into their 
new home later that summer, raising their children and making memories 
there for years to come. &nbsp;In December 2007, after Don had retired from 
farming, the couple remodeled Janet’s childhood home, and moved to 
Kensington, KS.&nbsp; Don passed away on December 4, 2012, and Janet missed 
him every day since.&nbsp;

Janet was a loyal and loving wife of 54 years, devoted mother, 
grandmother, and great-grandmother. &nbsp;She brought life and light to this 
world. &nbsp;She left her family with so many wonderful memories, especially 
of holidays spent together enjoying her wonderful cooking and infectious
 laughter.&nbsp; She was involved in numerous community activities.&nbsp; She was a
 faithful member of the United Church in Kensington, KS, where she 
served as a pianist, as an organist, in bible study, and in community 
service.&nbsp; Janet also helped with Meals on Wheels, she served on the 
Kensington Library Board, she was a member of the K-town Kates, and 
loved getting together with her friends to play bridge and have coffee.

Janet is preceded in death by her husband, Don, her brother Jim, and her parents, Hank and Chris Kusel.

Survivors include her son Daniel and his wife Michelle of Valley 
Center, KS; her daughters Lynda McKee and husband Jon, of Brewster, KS, 
Lori Hoverson of Hays, KS, Tamara Daubert and husband, Paul, of Lakeway,
 TX; nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Private family services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2020
 at the United Church of Kensington with Pastor Emily Blank 
officiating.&nbsp; The services will be streamed live <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Community/United-Church-of-Kensington-203236859856684/">on the United Church of Kensington Facebook page.</a>&nbsp; Friends are welcomed to attend the burial in the Agra Cemetery, Agra, KS following the services.

a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 
Phillipsburg.

Jeffrie Thomas Fox was born on October 27, 1971, in Hays, KS to Chester 
and Glenda (Watt) Fox. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Andrew 
Catholic Church in Wright, KS. Jeff graduated high school from Dodge 
City High School in Dodge City, KS. He attended Kansas State University
 obtaining a B.S. Degree in Animal Science, became a Doctor of 
Veterinary Medicine, and later obtained his Masters Degree in Feedlot 
Management 
On September 7, 1996, he was united in marriage to Rhonda Hollrah at St.
 Paul’s Lutheran Church in Enid, OK. In October of that year he was 
confirmed as an adult at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The couple resided
 in Enid, OK, Manhattan, KS, then in Guymon, OK for six years before 
moving to Beemer, NE in 2010. He started and operated Bovine Veterinary
 Management Resources. 
Jeff has always taken an active role in the cattle industry, where he 
served or belonged to many organizations. He was currently a member of 
the Nebraska Cattlemen serving as Committee Chairman for the Animal 
Health and Nutrition Committee. He was a member of American Veterinary 
Consultants(AVC), where he served on the Board of Directors and also 
served on the Beef Cattle Health and Well Being Committee. Jeff went to
 Washington, DC multiple times to represent AVC at the National 
Cattlemen's Beef Association Legislative Forums. Jeff was also a member
 of the Bovine Practitioners. 
Jeff was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point and had 
formerly served as an Elder at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Beemer. 
He also served as a Board Member at the Indian Trails Country Club, 
rural Beemer, NE. 
Jeff was profound in his faith with God. He loved to golf, hunt 
pheasants, ducks and quail, and train hunting dogs. He took pride in 
sharing these passions with his children. Jeff had an innate ability to
 build friendships with everyone he met. He loved his K-State Football.
 Jeff’s moral compass was always pointing due North. 
Survivors include his wife-Rhonda, children-Lacie, Owen, and Chad, 
mother-Glenda and Harold Flax of Dodge City, KS, his parents-in-law-Gene
 (Hoot) and Christine Hollrah of Enid, OK, brother-Adam and Jessica Flax
 of Topeka, KS, sister-in-law-Donna and Mike Hutchison of Cibolo, TX, 
and brother-in-law-Patrick and Kristy Hollrah of Edmund, OK. He is also
 survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Edward Layton “Mac” McElhaney Sr. passed away at the age of 78 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Ed lost his battle with COVID on October 24, 2020.

Ed was a longtime resident of Quinter, Kansas. He was born on October 10, 1942, in Buckeye, Arizona. He graduated from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Ed went on to join the Air Force in 1962.

Ed was united in marriage to Ruth Russell McElhaney on October 17, 1963, they were married for 57 years. Ed absolutely adored his wife and loved her so much. They raised three children, Edward, Jr., Tracey and Ivy. He retired from the Air Force in 1984. Ed and Ruth lived all over the United States along with Germany and England while in the Air Force. After retirement, he went to work for the Bureau of Science and Technology in Boulder, Colorado. Ed and Ruth lived in Colorado until 1994, when they moved to Kansas.&nbsp;

McElhaney, Jr (Carolyn) of Hays, Tracey Bansemer of Quinter, and Ivy Charles of Quinter; grandchildren Christina Ramirez (Jacob) of Quinter, Dawn Seymour of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Andrea Charles, Tanner Charles, and Preston Hashenberger of Quinter; great-grandchildren Breanna Seymour and Isabella Ramirez of Quinter; brother Martin McElhaney (Betty) of Phoenix, AZ; sister Martha Russell of Quinter; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.&nbsp;Ed was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Rozie McElhaney and his loving granddaughter Samantha Roze Charles.Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday October 30, 2020, at Gove Community Bible Church with Chris Thomas officiating.
