David J. Stenger, 61, Topeka, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021.

He was born October 18, 1959, the son of Paul and Margie (Wolf) Stenger.&nbsp; He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology.&nbsp; His hobbies included working on cars and anything he could build with his hands.&nbsp; David was a very caring man who loved his family and friends. &nbsp;

He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Vicki (Karen Hyland) Willenborg of Kansas City, MO, Patrick Stenger of Topeka, Steven Stenger of Holton, and Suellyn Stenger of Hays, sister-in-law: Anne E. Stenger of Kansas City, MO, along with his former wife and lifelong friend, Ronna Walker, and daughters Miranda (Jarrod) Ferguson, Samantha (Dave) Cordell and Natalie Stenger, all of Texas.&nbsp; David also leaves behind four grandchildren: Raelynn Ferguson, Mikayla Kizziar, Olivia Cordell, and Morrison Stenger, one great grandson: Oliver Kizziar, along with many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Mary Kay Stenger, and brothers: Donald J. Stenger, Michael J. Stenger, and Paul J. Stenger, Jr.

David’s body was donated to The University of Kansas Medical Center.

Inurnment will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023 in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Jay Dean Gordon, age 65, of McDonald, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at HaysMed in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;

Jay was born June 7, 1958 to Robert and Patricia (Haps) Gordon in California. Jay grew up and went to school in Havre, Montana. 

Jay served in the United States Army and Navy from 1976 to 1980 and 1982 to 1989 Navy and 2005 to 2018 Army National Guard. 

On April 23, 1994 he married Rose Smith Johnson. 

They moved to McDonald and Jay worked for the Rawlins County Road and Bridge Department for many years. He was a commander of the Bird City Legion, served on the McDonald City Council and belonged to the American Legion Riders. &nbsp;Jay enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving Jay are his wife Rose of McDonald, KS; son John Smith of Johnstown, CO; daughters Brandy (Michael) Luna of Commerce City, CO, Mandy Miller of Livingston, MT and Brittany Longmire of Louisville, KY; brothers Glenn Robin (Marion) Lanius of Reno, NV, Robert (Brenda) Gordon of Hillsboro, OK, William (Jodi) Lanius of Oaksdale, WA, Russell Gordon of OR, &nbsp;Brendon Gordon of OR; sister Jana (Kenneth) Mantzey of Goodyear, AZ; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many more family &nbsp;and &nbsp;friends. &nbsp;

After jumping two dollars a barrel on Friday, the benchmark Nymex crude futures contract dropped three dollars Monday. By lunchtime, U.S. crude dipped below $83 a barrel and London Brent dropped under $88. &nbsp;

Kansas diesel prices spiked last week, vaulting 42 cents a gallon in just seven days. Nationwide, diesel prices were four cents a gallon higher than a week earlier, but seven cents lower than a month ago, according to the auto club AAA. 

In Kansas, the average pump price for diesel reached $4.70 a gallon last Thursday, an increase of 42 cents from a week earlier, the biggest one-week bump in recent memory, and twenty cents higher than the national average. Prices have since dropped to $4.62 as of Monday. 

Weekly government reporting shows national diesel fuel inventories down 1.7 million barrels from a week ago. The Energy Information Administration says diesel stockpiles are about 12% below the five-year average for this time of year.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was down two rigs in eastern Kansas, and down one in the western half of the state. That's a nearly eight percent drop from last week, down more than five percent from a month ago, and down over 39% from a year ago. Drilling was underway Monday on two leases in Ellis County and one in Barton County. Year to date, 207 operators have spudded 1,069 wells in Kansas, and drilled 2.9 million feet of well bore.

Operators across the state completed 21 wells in the week through October 26th. Out of 13 in western Kansas, six were dry holes.&nbsp; Kansas regulators okayed 37 permits for drilling at new locations, including one in Ellis County.

The government reported another all-time record for U.S. crude production. The Energy Information Administration says domestic operators pumped a best-ever 13,230,000 barrels per day last week. Before this year, output has exceeded 13 million barrels per day only twice. The U.S. has now topped 13 million barrels per day in each of the last three weekly reports.

The government says U.S. crude inventories are up 1.4 million barrels to just over 421 million as of October 20. Stockpiles are about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year. Energy Information Administration said average daily domestic crude imports rose by 71-thousand barrels to six million barrels per day. The four week average is up nearly two percent over the same four weeks last year. 

Oil-by-rail traffic was down for the week but rose compared to last year. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,945 tanker carloads of petroleum or petroleum products rolling the rails in the week through October 21st. That's down more than six hundred tankers from a week earlier, but marks an 8.3 percent increase over the same week a year ago. Association of American Railroads reports the weekly totals have surpassed the year-ago tallies each week since July.

China is turning oil sanctions into a profit center. Just this year, China has reaped savings of nearly $10 billion through record purchases of oil from countries under western sanctions. That's according to Reuters reporting on trade and shipments from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Cheaper crude bolsters the world's second-largest consumer and refiner, especially China's small independent operators. It also bolsters an already-lucrative export trade in diesel and gasoline.

In a sign of the times, the Chinese oil and gas firm PetroChina has reportedly settled a crude-oil transaction using the country's official digital currency. That's a first, according to the government newspaper China Daily, which reported a deal for a million barrels of crude sold at the Shanghai exchange was settled with China's Central Bank Digital Currency. Prices were not disclosed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Record U.S. crude production continues

Ronald Dean Swalley, 81, died at his home in Wichita, Kansas, on October 29, 2023. &nbsp;He was born July 30, 1942, in Nowata, Oklahoma, the son of James E. and Edith (Hicks) Swalley. 

Ronald graduated from Hoisington High School in 1960. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1966 to 1971 as a Specialist 5.

On December 22, 1962, he married Carol Darlene Stuart in Ulysses, Kansas.&nbsp;

Ronald worked as a CO-OP grain elevator manager for 37 years, that took them across four states, retiring in 2006. &nbsp;He was active in his community serving as a volunteer fireman, in civil defense, and with the chamber of commerce. He was a member of the Believer’s Southern Baptist Church of Wichita.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Swalley of the home; son, Shane (Sue) Swalley of Belpre; daughter, Kara (Paul) Jones of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Justin Swalley and Janessa Swalley both of Great Bend, Kaylin Drake of Belpre, Baleigh (Zaid) Kadhim of Dallas, Texas, and Stuart Jones of Tulsa, OK; and brothers, Glenn Swalley of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Hal Swalley of Wichita; sisters, Janice Kempke of Claflin, Kansas, Wanda Flood of Mayfield, New York, Sue Helfer of Alaska, and Ann Wolff of Tulsa, Oklahoma.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Thad Stuart Swalley.

Curtis Lee Uhl, age 80, died at the Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas on October 28, 2023. &nbsp;He was born on December 7, 1942, in Amarillo, Texas the son of George and Dorothy (French) Uhl.

Curtis worked in the oil field most of his adult life, spending most of it as a driller.  When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed collecting things, especially antique cars and tractors which he would often restore.  Curtis also spent many hours riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Graveside funeral service will be held at the Ness City Cemetery, on November 2, 2023, 1:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to Children’ Mercy Hospital, Kansas City in Curtis’ memory.

John William Palmer – b. May 27, 1939 d. October 27, 2023

John was born to John Howard Palmer and Esther Lora (Hill) Palmer at Rock Dell, Minnesota, on May 27, 1939. He was the first of four children. His siblings are David Palmer of Bison, KS, Charles Palmer of Ocala, FL, and Mary Buchanan of Abilene, KS. 

John was raised as a farmer and dairyman. 

He married Doris Mae Prohaska on October 4, 1963, and from this union were born John Daniel Palmer, James Dennis Palmer, and Jerry Duane Palmer. 

Born into labor, John spent most of his working life in construction and building. In addition to the farming of his youth, he also owned and operated a D8 Caterpillar dozer that he used to clear land, clean out ponds, and do heavy landscaping in Minnesota and Iowa. He was also naturally talented at other heavy equipment including large scrapers, ditchers, loaders, all manner of farm equipment, over-the-road trucking, and highway equipment. During his life he also operated his own concrete construction business. He built everything from sidewalks, to basements, house and building foundations, grain bins, and industrial floors in Minnesota and Kansas. He was proud that he had successfully poured concrete in every month of the year in both states. 

He also framed houses in Prescott, Arizona, and worked in the oil field around Russell, Kansas. He spent the last 15 years of his regular working career recycling highways in Kansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, until he “retired” with Doris to operate Maple Springs Campground in southern Minnesota for 15 more years. Together, they transformed a small, locally known campground into the top-rated campground in the entire state of Minnesota.

When he worked for others instead of himself, John always ascended into a supervisory position. He had a natural way of making his employees and subordinates feel valued. Consequently, John was always able to get the best from his men and was rewarded by loyalty from them as they would request to work with him instead of other supervisors. John was patient and a good teacher who worked with his men instead of over them.

John worked in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida at different times during his working life. During lean times he also worked as an over-the-road trucker, criss-crossing much of the lower 48 states and occasionally into Canada. 

John worked many and varied jobs to make sure his family was cared for. This also resulted in traveling to find climates more suitable to the health struggles of his children. In 1976, John moved his family to the Alton, KS, area and into Osborne, KS, in 1978, where they have owned a home until his passing.

John enjoyed nature, so loved hunting, fishing, and camping when time allowed. He also enjoyed the company of people, thus card parties, dominoes, food, ice cream, and campfires with friends and family were always highlights of his life.

John was very proud of his family. He was married to Doris for over 60 years. He loved his children and regretted how work prevented him and Doris from being able to spend more time with them and his grandchildren. But John was always very generous with his family, both immediate and extended, when needs arose. He was also very generous to the many churches he and Doris had become a part of as they worked around the country.

As a man of labor, the intangibles of life seemed harder to stand on than the things he could control, but John obeyed the gospel with Doris early in their marriage and continued to hold membership and involvement with churches of Christ throughout his life.

The one struggle John could never overcome was his battle with Parkinson's disease that infiltrated the last 20 years of his life. He fought with everything medical science had to offer and all his stamina until he succumbed on October 27, 2023.

John is survived by his wife Doris, his three siblings, three sons, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He has been cremated and is with family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

David Walter Kuerschner, the fifth child of Reverend Edwin M. and Olivia B (Krueger) was born July 13, 1945 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. 

His at-home baptism occurred on August 12 with confirmation of that vow on March 22, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran, North Morristown, Minnesota. At three years of age, Dave determined he would be a pastor. The majority of his formal education reflected this goal beginning at the Lutheran Day School, North Morristown, Concordia Academy and College (St. Paul, Minnesota), Concordia Senior College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, Missouri - Masters of Divinity degree, 1971) completed the pastoral education. His love of singing was evident in all of his participation in all of the Concordia choirs.

While at Concordia College, Dave met PeggyJean Holste. They were married on June 9, 1968, Ludell, Kansas. God blessed this union with three children: Jonathan Kirk ('75), Jeffrey Kristof ('80) and Jenienne Kim ('82). 

After completing his vicarage year at Bethel, Middleberg Heights, Ohio and seminary graduation, Dave was called to Holy Trinity, Lakeview, Michigan, where he served for nine plus years. Other parishes he served were Zion, Staunton, Illinois and Immanuel, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1992, Cargill Associates (a para church company) approached Dave to be a church consultant. Six years later he was asked to do this work for Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod as Vice President of Agency Services. As part of the "umbrella" of Lutheran Church Extension Fund, he later became VP of Capital Funding Services. During this time, he ministered to 41 congregations and 36 agencies, programs at 56 and 48 respectively. 

Retirement in 2011 brought many joys. First and foremost was time spent with adult children and grandchildren, siblings and friends. Other activities included still writing stewardship materials, wood working, gardening, fishing, puttering in the yard so he could visit with passersby, continuing theological discussions and sharing faith times with old and new friends. 

David was released from much pain to be with our Savior October 22, 2023. 

Those who predeceased him were his parents, his sister Doris, nephews, Michael Kuerschner and Bradley Meech and sister-in-law, Betsy Holste.

Those left to enjoy memories are PeggyJean, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Jenienne (Jason); grandchildren Jonathan II (Shalee), Joseph "Joey" Kuerschner, Lucas and Louis Gabathuler; great grandchild, Ben; god children Jan Flores, Joel Kuerschner, Bryan Meech, Nathan Kuerschner and Nikki Haas; siblings Victor (Dorothy), Vernon (Valeria), John (Shirley), Edwin (Patricia) Kuerschner; many nieces, nephews and spouses, relatives and friends.

&nbsp; Richard Royce "Rico" Casper, 56, of Brewster departed from this world on October 28, 2023, in Brewster, KS. He was born on April 13, 1967, in Hays, KS. 

He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a true friend to many.

Richard Casper is survived by his wife, Cherise; daughter, Tiffany and husband Jesse, of Missouri, and their children Rory, Aleczandyr, Temperance, Sylar, and Dorien; daughter Amanda and husband Dustin, of Loveland, CO, and their children Jude, Adriana, Serenity and Elijah; son Daymond and wife Shanel, of Colby, KS and their daughter Ava; son Nicholas of Colby; siblings, Harriet, Harry, Bruce and Brian; and many nieces and nephews.

Cynthia E. Dixson

Penny Rae Law, 59, of Hill City, Kansas entered into the arms of Jesus October 26, 2023. She was born September 11, 1964, at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City to Clarene (Haynes) and Randall Law. 

Penny grew up on a farm between Hill City and WaKeeney. She attended grade school in Hill City and furthered her education at Beamgard Learning Center in Atwood. At age 21 Penny began attending Kobler Center (DSNWK) and a few years later started a job cleaning at Pizza Hut in the mornings. Penny gained many lifelong friendships through these experiences. 

She retired from Pizza Hut in 2016 after 20 plus years and continued attending Kobler Center until 2023.

Penny had an incredible zest for life and enjoyed bowling, cheerleading, participating in Special Olympics events and 4-H. She loved Reba McEntire and watching her favorite TV shows on DVDs. Her favorites were Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and The Waltons. Penny had a magnetic personality and never met a person she didn’t like. She had a joyous giggle and a smile that could light up a room.

Penny was preceded in death by her father Randall Law, her sister Kim Wagner, and her grandparents Clarence and Oda Haynes and Frank and Edna Law. 

She is survived by her mother Clarene Law-Wanker and stepfather Bob Wanker, Hill City; brothers Steve Law, Plainville, and Chad Law (Stephanie) Hays; nephew Sawyer Law, Hays; niece Nikki Wagner, Wichita; great-niece Alexis Wagner, Wichita; and many cousins. She had a special relationship with her uncle Gary Haynes, Hill City; aunt Korla Griffey, Norton; cousins Sheila Law, Fort Smith, Montana and Ashley Law, Loveland, Colorado; and many other family members and close friends.

Louis Leroy Robinson passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023 with his family by his side. Lou was born on May 22, 1934 to Tom and Mabel Robinson near Bogue Kansas.&nbsp;

After graduating high school from Downs, Kansas he went to Emporia State where he met and married Barbara Moore in 1958. They moved to Hays in 1962 where he worked for Golden Belt Wholesale until he started his own business – Robinson’s Color Center which later became Hearth and Home Center. As a kitchen designer, he really asked questions to find out how the customers lived in their space to personalize his design work. 

After retirement he worked in the maintenance department at Fort Hays State University. In 2004 Lou and Barb moved to Hutchinson to be close to grandchildren.

Lou worked hard throughout his life and could fix just about anything. He shared his time and talents with family - traveling with his tools to complete honey-do-tasks during visits. He served his communities by participating on boards, coaching youth, and involvement in his church. &nbsp;He was always passionate about working with kids throughout his life as a father, uncle, coach, youth mentor and the best papa ever! He became Lucky Lou on a trip to India in 2012 and if you were fortunate enough to have met him, he passed luck on to you with a firm handshake and a smile.

Lou is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 65 years and his three children Mark Robinson (Stephanie) of Lawrence Kansas, Lisa Robinson Johnson (Craig) of Spain and Hays, Julia Robinson Johnson (Kirk) of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren, Lee, Alex, Spenser, Corbin, Walker, Claire, Lydia, Wyatt and Winston; and four great-grandchildren, Ariana, Jackson, Xander and Brigham who are a blessing and were blessed by their beloved Papa; and three sisters, Shirley Schoen, Fredrica Murphy and Rosalie Bliss. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty Robinson and Patty Jean Robinson. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wesley Tower’s Chapel, 3709 Asbury Place, Hutchinson, Kansas on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 2 pm.&nbsp;

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged sex crime.

Just before 7p.m. October 27, police arrested 43-year-old&nbsp;Jesse R. Kroll of Leavenworth in the 400 block South 10th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Kroll was wanted&nbsp;on a Wyandotte County warrant for rape, multiple counts of aggravated indecent liberties and violation of a protective order.&nbsp; He remains in custody on a $150,000 bond, according to online jail records.

WASHINGTON —The U.S. State Department released an updated “Worldwide Travel Alert” Sunday stating that American citizens should exercise increased caution around the world due to increasing tensions in various locations and the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.&nbsp;

U.S. State Department updates worldwide travel alert

Hearing loss doesn’t just mean an older adult needs to turn up the TV. It’s been linked to a range of health problems, including dementia.

The latest aging research not only shows the two are connected, it’s also leading scientists to believe that hearing loss may actually be a cause of dementia.

This emerging area of research has huge implications, says Frank Lin, MD, PhD, director of the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health. at the Bloomberg School. Some 37.5 million Americans have trouble hearing, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

A key question researchers have: Could hearing aids reduce the risk of a person developing dementia?

Lin explains the connection between the two conditions and where the science is headed.

If you have hearing loss, you have a greater chance of developing dementia, according to a 2020 Lancet commission report that lists hearing loss as one of the top risk factors for dementia.

Hearing loss can make the brain work harder, forcing it to strain to hear and fill in the gaps. That comes at the expense of other thinking and memory systems. Another possibility: Hearing loss causes the aging brain to shrink more quickly. A third possibility is that hearing loss leads people to be less socially engaged, which is hugely important to remaining intellectually stimulated. If you can't hear very well, you may not go out as much, so the brain is less engaged and active.

Quantifying hearing loss’s impact

According to the World Health Organization, hearing loss is estimated to account for 8% of dementia cases. This means that hearing loss may be responsible for 800,000 of the nearly 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed each year.

Johns Hopkins is leading a large National Institute on Aging study to see if hearing aids can safeguard seniors’ mental processes. The study has multiple locations and has recruited nearly 1,000 people ages 70–84 with hearing loss. One group is provided hearing aids, while another group receives aging education. In July, Public Health on Call interviewed Dr. Frank Lin about his research using a randomized control study. Everyone was followed for three years with cognitive skills test every 6 months. Hearing interventions were shown to slow down cognitive decline in those with more risk factors for cognitive decline. A hearing aid is a low risk intervention that can help prevent cognitive decline in those with other risk factors.

Hearing loss has long-term effects on health. It’s believed to increase the risk for falls and depression. It also leads to higher health care costs: People with hearing loss have an increased rate of hospitalization.

Please encourage your loved ones to go get their hearing checked and find hearing aids if they have hearing loss. October is also National Protect Your Hearing Month so remember your ear plugs or earmuffs when you are around loud sounds. Prevention is important.

Benjamin Cecil Evel

Richard Lee Ahlvers, 90, passed away October 27, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. He was born at home on the family farm on May 19, 1933, in Mitchell County, Kan. to Leo and Eunice (Smith) Ahlvers. 

He married Kathryn Deines November 19, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis.&nbsp;

Richard was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1955 to 1957 as a Signal Officer, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. &nbsp;

“Mr. Ahlvers” was a long-time educator and administrator in Kansas. &nbsp;His dedication to his career began as a science and math teacher at Stafford High School. He then transitioned to a principal and athletic director at St. Francis for 12 years. &nbsp;He served as principal at Mankato Elementary, and then superintendent at Pike Valley, retiring in 1996. &nbsp;Failing at retirement, he served as interim superintendent at North Central School District, before finally officially re-retiring in 1998. &nbsp;

A resident of Great Bend since 1998, Richard served as a volunteer for the AARP Tax-Aide Program until 2019.&nbsp; He was an active member of the Great Bend Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend Noon Lions Club, the County Planning Committee and served as a board member of the Boys Home. &nbsp;

Richard was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan and, as a Fort Hays State and Kansas State alumnus, enjoyed all Kansas college athletics, particularly after his daughters attended KU and Emporia. &nbsp;Never having an idle mind, he was a lifelong learner and enjoyed extensive conversation spanning everything from history to politics to agriculture.&nbsp;

While Richard was the ultimate professional at work, his passion was for his family, of whom he was immensely proud (especially his beloved grandson). Having children gave him both the perfect opportunity to indulge in his love of horses, and to spend time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Kathy; two daughters, Alicia Ahlvers of Henrico, Va. and Richelle Ahlvers-Dolphin and husband Wade Dolphin of Monument, Colo.; a brother, Rodney Ahlvers and wife Norma of Glen Elder; a sister, Pat Boyd and husband Jim of Beloit; a sister-in-law, Carol Ahlvers; a brother-in-law, James Deines and wife Marsha; a sister-in-law Vickie Riedl and husband Martin; a sister-in-law, Marcia Brewer and husband Lee; and a grandson, Jonathon Ahlvers and wife Dale Northrup of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as a large extended family. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bob Ahlvers and David Ahlvers, two brothers-in-law Robert Deines and Frank Deines, and one sister-in-law Elizabeth Deines.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with Reverend Jay Welshonse presiding. He married Kathryn Deines November 19, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis.&nbsp;Richard was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1955 to 1957 as a Signal Officer, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. &nbsp;“Mr. Ahlvers” was a long-time educator and administrator in Kansas. &nbsp;His dedication to his career began as a science and math teacher at Stafford High School. He then transitioned to a principal and athletic director at St. Francis for 12 years. &nbsp;He served as principal at Mankato Elementary, and then superintendent at Pike Valley, retiring in 1996. &nbsp;Failing at retirement, he served as interim superintendent at North Central School District, before finally officially re-retiring in 1998. &nbsp;A resident of Great Bend since 1998, Richard served as a volunteer for the AARP Tax-Aide Program until 2019.&nbsp; He was an active member of the Great Bend Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend Noon Lions Club, the County Planning Committee and served as a board member of the Boys Home. &nbsp;Richard was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan and, as a Fort Hays State and Kansas State alumnus, enjoyed all Kansas college athletics, particularly after his daughters attended KU and Emporia. &nbsp;Never having an idle mind, he was a lifelong learner and enjoyed extensive conversation spanning everything from history to politics to agriculture.&nbsp;While Richard was the ultimate professional at work, his passion was for his family, of whom he was immensely proud (especially his beloved grandson). Having children gave him both the perfect opportunity to indulge in his love of horses, and to spend time with his family.&nbsp;Survivors include his wife of 62 years Kathy; two daughters, Alicia Ahlvers of Henrico, Va. and Richelle Ahlvers-Dolphin and husband Wade Dolphin of Monument, Colo.; a brother, Rodney Ahlvers and wife Norma of Glen Elder; a sister, Pat Boyd and husband Jim of Beloit; a sister-in-law, Carol Ahlvers; a brother-in-law, James Deines and wife Marsha; a sister-in-law Vickie Riedl and husband Martin; a sister-in-law, Marcia Brewer and husband Lee; and a grandson, Jonathon Ahlvers and wife Dale Northrup of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as a large extended family. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bob Ahlvers and David Ahlvers, two brothers-in-law Robert Deines and Frank Deines, and one sister-in-law Elizabeth Deines.&nbsp;Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with Reverend Jay Welshonse presiding. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –&nbsp;In an exhibition fundraiser to benefit the Maui Strong Fund, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 82-75 at the State Farm Center. Redshirt senior Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 25 points and senior transfer Hunter Dickinson added 22 points to lead the Jayhawks on Sunday evening.

The two teams partnered together to make the game a fundraiser to provide financial resources for rapid response and recovery for the devastating wildfires in Maui.

“We raised&nbsp;well north&nbsp;of a million dollars, so it was good,”&nbsp;said Head Coach Bill&nbsp;Self.&nbsp;“They did&nbsp;a&nbsp;great job&nbsp;with selling as many tickets as possible. There&nbsp;were a lot of positive things that came from&nbsp;it&nbsp;and I do think it was much more uncomfortable of environment than our players thought it would be.”&nbsp;

Kansas won the tip and traded back-and-forth buckets with Illinois for the first 10 minutes of regulation, with McCullar Jr. scoring 11 of Kansas’ first 15 points. Defense picked up as both teams struggled to find any momentum, until the Illini went on a 7-0 scoring run with five minutes left in the first half, stretching their lead to 31-23. The Jayhawks responded with back-to-back alley-oop dunks from Dickinson.

Illinois closed out the half with a pair of three-pointers as they went into the locker room with a 43-37 lead. Led by 18 first-half points from McCullar Jr., Kansas shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field and scored 26 points in the paint. Illinois shot 50.0 percent (17-of-34) from the field, which included seven three-pointers.

The second half opened with a layup and a mid-range jumper from Dickinson, followed by a dunk from KJ Adams Jr. An uncontested layup by redshirt senior Dajuan Harris Jr. tied the game up at 68 apiece with five minutes to play.

A battle of the big men commenced, as Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game, which was answered by a hook-shot from Dickinson. With two minutes left in the contest, Illinois stretched its lead to six after a back-door layup from guard Justin Harmon.

As a team, Kansas shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc. Illinois shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks were led by 25 points from McCullar Jr., 22 points from Dickinson and 14 points from Adams Jr. Harris Jr. dished out eight assists to go along with his six points, two steals and one blocked shot.

“I thought our mindset was okay,” added Self. “It exposed us and it did exactly what we wanted it to do.&nbsp;I&nbsp;didn’t&nbsp;think some of our newcomers responded like we hoped they would, but if you can only get three steals as a team on the road you&nbsp;aren’t&nbsp;going to win.&nbsp;We executed well in the second half so there were some good things that happened in that regard.”&nbsp;

CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. — A Kansas man is going to prison for child sex crimes.

On October 24, A Oklahoma judge sentenced 25-year-old Christian Dalmont of Wichita to twenty years in prison for&nbsp; Lewd Acts with a Child and Possession of Child Pornography, according to the Canadian County Sheriff Chris West.

In the Summer of 2022 during an undercover operation,&nbsp;Canadian County Sheriff’s Investigator arrested Dalmont tried to meet up a twelve-year-old girl, and her two-year-old female neighbor for sex.&nbsp; The case was featured on the Discovery Channels’s Undercover Underage - Season 2 earlier this year.

Investigators worked with SOSA (Safe from Online Sex Abuse), a nonprofit organization during the undercover operation.&nbsp; SOSA provided decoys (actors) portraying themselves to be minor children in Canadian County and worked alongside Canadian County Sheriff’s Office investigators.&nbsp; Dalmont reached out to the decoys via social media and over a ten-day period arranged to meet with what he thought was a twelve-year-old girl and a neighbor, (two-year-old female) for sex.&nbsp; 

Dalmont planned to travel to Oklahoma and meet the two at the Route 66 Skate Park in Oklahoma City, near the east Canadian County line.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dalmont, before the meeting, explained to the decoys how he wanted to teach the minor children how to have sex.&nbsp; Dalmont described how he would also have sex with the two-year-old female and the steps that he would take to ensure he would be able to physically have sex with the baby.&nbsp; 

Dalmont described in detail the sex acts he planned to perform upon the two year old.&nbsp; The conversation evolved into Dalmont describing his desire to have a threesome with both children.
