BALTIMORE (AP) — Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson, whose deft glovework and folksy manner made him one of the most beloved and accomplished athletes in Baltimore history, has died. He was 86.

The Orioles announced his death in a joint statement with Robinson's family Tuesday. The statement did not say how Robinson died.

The Orioles held a moment of silence before their game against the Washington Nationals, and the teams lined up outside their dugouts to pay their respects. Also before the game, fans gathered around the 9-foot bronze statue of Robinson inside Camden Yards.

“Great player, great guy on the field, great guy off,” said fellow Orioles Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, who was overcome with emotion. “Respectful, kind. And you don’t meet too many guys like that. Brooks was a genuine person. There was no acting. Brooks was just a genuine person.”

Coming of age before the free agent era, Robinson spent his entire 23-year career with the Orioles. He almost single-handedly helped Baltimore defeat Cincinnati in the 1970 World Series and homered in Game 1 of the Orioles' 1966 sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers for their first crown.

Robinson participated in 18 All-Star Games, won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves and earned the 1964 AL Most Valuable Player award after batting .318 with 28 home runs and a league-leading 118 RBIs.

“An integral part of our Orioles Family since 1955, he will continue to leave a lasting impact on our club, our community, and the sport of baseball,” the team said.

He finished with 268 homers, drove in 1,357 runs and batted a respectable .267 in 2,896 career games. Not bad for ol’ No. 5, the boy from Arkansas.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred described Robinson as “one of the greats of our National Pastime.”

“Brooks stood among the greatest defensive players who have ever lived,” Manfred said in a statement. “... He was a model of excellence, durability, loyalty and winning baseball for the Orioles.

“I will always remember Brooks as a true gentleman who represented our game extraordinarily well on and off the field all his life.”

Robinson will be forever remembered for his work ethic and the skill he displayed at the hot corner, where he established himself as one of the finest fielding third baseman in baseball history, whether charging slow rollers or snaring liners down the third-base line.

“Brooks was maybe the last guy to get into the clubhouse the day of the game, but he would be the first guy on the field,” former Orioles manager Earl Weaver said. “He’d be taking his groundballs, and we’d all go, ‘Why does Brooks have to take any groundballs?’

“I wouldn’t expect anything else from Brooks. Seeing him work like that meant a lot of any young person coming up. He was so steady, and he steadied everybody else.”

Robinson arrived in Baltimore in September 1955 as an 18-year-old after spending most of his first professional season in baseball with Class B York. He went 2 for 22 with the Orioles and struck out 10 times.

He jockeyed between the majors and minors until July 1959, when he stuck around in Baltimore for good.

“I think maybe he always knew what it’s like to be in the big leagues at 19. And then I think when you get to the big leagues, you get here, you got to stay here, you got to figure out how to get better," Palmer said. “You have to decide who you want to be like. I think for all of us who knew him … he was the best.”

Brooks Calbert Robinson Jr. was born in Little Rock on May 18, 1937. He eventually made Baltimore his home but never really lost his southern twang, which was just fine with fans in blue-collar Baltimore, who appreciated his homespun charm and unassuming demeanor.

Dubbed “Mr. Oriole,” he was a sports hero in Charm City, in the pantheon with former Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas and Orioles infielder Cal Ripken, who performed for a different generation.

Many Orioles rooters who never got to see Robinson play still were able to enjoy his observations as he was part of team broadcasts.

Ripken was known as The Iron Man because he played in 2,632 consecutive games, but Robinson wasn’t fond of sitting on the bench, either. From 1960-1975, he played in at least 152 games in 14 seasons and in 144 games the other two years.

“I’m a guy who just wanted to see his name in the lineup everyday,” he said. “To me, baseball was a passion to the point of obsession.”

Robinson retired in 1977 after batting only .149 in 24 games. His jersey was retired that year.

Robinson’s most memorable performance came as MVP of the 1970 World Series, when the Orioles bounced back from their stunning defeat to the New York Mets the year before and Robinson redeemed himself after batting just 1 for 19 in that series. Because he was so sensational in the field during Baltimore’s five-game triumph over the Reds, few remember he hit .429 and homered twice and drove in six runs — or that he made an error on his first play in the field.

In Game 1, Robinson delivered the tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning. One inning earlier, he made a sensational backhanded grab of a hard grounder hit down the line by Lee May, spun around in foul territory and somehow threw out the runner.

Robinson contributed an RBI single in the second game and became forever a part of World Series lore with his standout performance in Game 3. He made a tremendous, leaping grab of a grounder by Tony Perez to start a first-inning double play; charged a slow roller in the second inning and threw out Tommy Helms; then capped his memorable afternoon with a diving catch of a liner by Johnny Bench. The Series ended, fittingly, with a ground out to Robinson in Game 5, a 9-3 Orioles win.

“I’m beginning to see Brooks in my sleep,” Reds manager Sparky Anderson said during the Series. “If I dropped this paper plate, he’d pick it up on one hop and throw me out at first.”

Anderson also said, “He can throw his glove out there and it will start 10 double plays by itself.”

Palmer and other teammates would say that the country got to see what Robinson did routinely during the regular season. Robinson used to blush when asked to recall his heroics in October 1970.

“I tell people that I played 23 seasons and I never did have five games in a row like I did in that World Series,” he said. “It was a once in a lifetime five-game series for me, and it just happened to be in a World Series.”

His legacy in Maryland continued long after his retirement.

There’s a Brooks Robinson Drive in Pikesville, and the annual state high school All-Star game played at Camden Yards is named in his honor.

Ricardo San Miguel, 68, passed away September 18, 2023 at Larned, Kansas.

He was born July 13, 1955 in Dumas, Texas, the son of Juan and Andrea Santana San Miguel. He was an independent contractor for construction. He was a wonderful father. He will be sadly missed and will always hold a place in our hearts.

Survivors include: son, Daniel (Teresa) San Miguel, Lyons, Kansas; daughter, Melissa (Roberto) Nevarez, Larned, Kansas; son, Gabriel (Keylee) San Miguel, Harper, Kansas; son, Caleb San Miguel, Phoenix, Arizona; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, Kansas with David San Miguel and Daniel San Miguel presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary. &nbsp;Cremation will take place following the service.

<a href="https://webcast.funeralvue.com/events/viewer/92875" target="_blank"></a>LeRoy Eugene Wilhelm, 95, passed away on September 25, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on October 28, 1927, to Henry Wilhelm, Jr. and Martha Ernst Wilhelm.

He was born and raised on a farm northwest of Susank and went to school in a one-room schoolhouse 1 ½ miles from the farm through the 8th grade. &nbsp;

On June 6, 1954, he married Arlene Muth in Hoisington at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, having been married over 68 years. 

He was a farmer and then entered the United States Army. He was a tank driver for his military commander at Fort Riley.&nbsp;

He was a member of the church council, head usher and Sunday school superintendent of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington. He then moved to Great Bend and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until his death. He was a member of Eagles Lodge of Great Bend for 55 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, LaVentrice Wilhelm of Surprise, Ariz., and LaVeneia Smith and husband, Kyle, of Claflin, Kan.; a grandson, Preston Smith, of Claflin, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Rice of Greenwood, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Ernest Wilhelm; and three sisters, Janiece Cowan, Janeal Rodecape, and Darlene Rundle.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Nancy Mitchell, PMA, presiding. The family will be receiving guests prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. &nbsp;

He was born on October 28, 1927, to Henry Wilhelm, Jr. and Martha Ernst Wilhelm. He was born and raised on a farm northwest of Susank and went to school in a one-room schoolhouse 1 ½ miles from the farm through the 8th grade. &nbsp;On June 6, 1954, he married Arlene Muth in Hoisington at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, having been married over 68 years. He was a farmer and then entered the United States Army. He was a tank driver for his military commander at Fort Riley.&nbsp;He was a member of the church council, head usher and Sunday school superintendent of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington. He then moved to Great Bend and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until his death. He was a member of Eagles Lodge of Great Bend for 55 years.&nbsp;Survivors include two daughters, LaVentrice Wilhelm of Surprise, Ariz., and LaVeneia Smith and husband, Kyle, of Claflin, Kan.; a grandson, Preston Smith, of Claflin, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Rice of Greenwood, Ark.He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Ernest Wilhelm; and three sisters, Janiece Cowan, Janeal Rodecape, and Darlene Rundle.Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Nancy Mitchell, PMA, presiding. The family will be receiving guests prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. GREAT BEND — On October 11, K-State Research and Extension will be hosting a program by Wildlife Specialist Drew Ricketts starting at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands Center located at 592 NE K 156 Hwy, Great Bend. &nbsp;

During his program, he will discuss coyote biology, helping people to better understand their movements, vocalizations, and diet among other topics.&nbsp;He will also discuss tips and methods on trapping and calling coyotes including the proper use of mouth and electronic calls. 

A light meal will be served and is sponsored by P &amp; S Electric of Great Bend. Space is limited to 70 people. &nbsp;

Marjorie I. McKinney, 88, passed away September 20, 2023 at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas.

She was born August 5, 1935 in Longdale, Oklahoma, the daughter of Avery G. and Edna Knoop Hall.&nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, she was a teacher. She was a member of New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene of Larned, Kansas.

She married Carl McKinney on July 10, 1966 in Kinsley, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 14, 2023.

Survivors include son, Kenneth R. McKinney, Arlington, Kansas; daughter, Sheila McKinney, Garfield, Kansas; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Dean Hall and Jon Hall; and a sister Irene Miller.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2023 at New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene, Larned, Kansas with Pastor Daryl Riffel presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, Kansas. Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery, Lewis, Kansas.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Following a historic performance on Saturday in Kansas State’s 44-31 victory over UCF, sophomore running back&nbsp;DJ Giddens&nbsp;has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It is the first weekly conference honors in Giddens’ career and the first by a Wildcat this season.

A product of Junction City, Kansas, Giddens rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns, the first time in school history a player had at least 200 rushing yards and four rushing scores in a game. The 22nd instance in Big 12 history and just the second since 2015, it was also the 16th 200-yard rushing game in school history and the first since Alex Barnes went for 250 yards at Baylor in 2018. His four rushing touchdowns tied for third in school history and were the most by a K-State running back since Barnes had four against Oklahoma State in 2018. Giddens did his damage on 30 carries, the most by a Wildcat since Barnes rushed 32 times against Texas Tech in 2017.

In addition to his 207 rushing yards, he hauled in eight passes for 86 yards as his 293 total yards from scrimmage were the third most in school history behind a pair of performances by Darren Sproles, who put up 323 yards in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game victory over No. 1 Oklahoma and 298 yards against Louisiana the next season.

Giddens enters K-State’s bye week ranking 11th nationally and second in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (105.8), while he is fourth in the conference in rushing touchdowns (4).

Kansas State is off this week prior to playing at Oklahoma State next Friday, October 6. The game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., will be televised by ESPN.

Nominations are already open for the annual Hays Chamber Banquet Awards.

It's a month earlier than usual, said Sara Wasinger, CEO/president.

"We started in October last year," she said.

"This year, we just want to give people enough time and really make sure folks have plenty of days and opportunities to submit nominations."

The eight awards will be presented during the Jan. 30, 2024 annual banquet to local businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community.

Nominations may be made on the Chamber's website, <a href="https://hayschamber.com/sites/default/files/annual_chamber_awards_banquet_nomination_form_-_fillable.pdf">hayschamber.com</a>, through Oct. 31. Previous award winners are also listed online.

"It's one of our favorite events," Wasinger said.

The awards come as a surprise to the nominees, and there've been some "white lies" told to make sure the honoree would be attending the banquet.

"I get a little red-faced thinking about some of the 'extended truths' and 'big white lies' I've told," Wasinger laughed.

Last year she and her chamber staff told Hays psychologist Kyle Carlin, director of the West Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative, "that someone he knew and loved and appreciated was getting an award so we could get him there."

Carlin was then surprised when his own name was announced as winner of the 2023 Helping Hands award.&nbsp;

"He kept shaking his finger at me from the stage," Wasinger said. "I'll never forget that look on his face."

Richard Michael Zerr, of Grainfield, Kansas passed away on September 14, 2023, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 70. He was born on May 9, 1953, to Balcer and Julia (Heier) Zerr in Quinter, Kansas. 

He married Jill (Tucker) they later divorced.

He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1971.

 He was an avid hunter. He enjoyed hunting coyotes, pheasants and deer. He was a farmer and rancher and spent many hours with his cattle. He retired from Gove County Road Department. Richard also enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews play sports.

Richard is survived by his siblings, Lorena (Edward) Ludolph, of Oakley, KS, Ron (Debra McNeill) Zerr, of Wichita, KS, Connie Fahrenz, of Denton, TX, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Zerr, of Dodge City, KS, Rex Zerr, of Parachute, CO; stepdaughter, Dayna (Jonathan) Alexander, of Bird City, KS; stepson, Kyle Shaw, of Grainfield, KS; stepgreat-granddaugher, Brooklyn Alexande; nieces and nephews, Shawn Ludolph, Julie Whitcraft, Kimberly Gentry, Jared Zerr, Amber Zerr, Stacy Gile, Curtis Gile and Corey Zerr.

Annual Ellis St. Mary's parish auction and Mardi Gras is Oct. 14; tickets on sale now

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up short Saturday&nbsp; afternoon against Pittsburg State, falling in three sets, 25-22, 26-24, 25-17. The Tigers (6-7, 0-4 MIAA) held leads midway through each set, but the Gorillas were able to rally each time to complete the sweep.

Fort Hays State fell behind by three early in the first set but fought back to lead as late as 13-11. The visitors responded with the next four points, taking the lead for good. FHSU fought off the first two set points, closing within 24-22, before PSU called a timeout and ended the set on the next serve.

The Tigers had a chance to take set two, leading 24-23, before Pittsburg State rallied to win the next three points and go up 2-0 in the match. 🏐 FHSU swept at home by Pitt State

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team placed fourth and the men finished seventh at the 2023 Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State at the Greiner Family Cross Country Course Saturday morning (Sept. 23). The Tiger women were the top Division II team in the standings, while the men were third out of the 10 male DII programs in attendance.

The Tiger women accumulated 161 points, fewest amongst the 13 female DII teams in the competition. The men racked up 202 points across their top five finishers.

👟 FHSU women fourth, men seventh at OSU Cowboy Jamboree

The Coyotes are back on the road Saturday for a Kansas Conference game against Bethel. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Thresher Stadium in North Newton.

Bethel's 30-24 victory last season in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex ended KWU's 13-game winning streak. It was the Coyotes first loss to the Threshers since the 2008 season. KWU has an 18-4 edge since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes evened their record with a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Friends last Saturday at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. The offense produced a season-high 353 yards that included a season-best 245 rushing yards.

Nick Allsman&nbsp;led the ground attack with 125 yards on 17 carries and&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;had 96 yards on 19 attempts. Both scored a touchdown as well. Quarterback&nbsp;Richard Lara&nbsp;was 9 of 13 passing for 108 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown - a 74-yard catch and run by&nbsp;Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey&nbsp;in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 tie. Lara also ran for KWU's final score in the fourth quarter and was not sacked during the game.

Luke Armstrong&nbsp;returned a punt 88 yards for touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Coyotes a 21-7 lead. He also returned a kickoff 28 yards and was chosen the KCAC's Special Teams Player of the Week.. Friends entered the game averaging just under 56 points and 533 total yards - 494 rushing - but had 388 total yard and 320 rushing Saturday. Linebacker&nbsp;Shaylan Lewis&nbsp;had a team-best 13 tackles, linebacker&nbsp;Ricco Moore&nbsp;11 and safety&nbsp;Julian Urioste&nbsp;10 for the Coyotes.

KWU closes out play against the Kessinger Division a week from Saturday when McPherson comes to town. Following a bye week October 7 the Coyotes begin play against fellow Bissell Division opponents starting with Avila on October 14 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Threshers defeated Avila 42-26 last Saturday in Kansas City. They led 35-6 at halftime but surrendered 20 points in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;They opened the season with victories over Sterling and Saint Mary but lost to Ottawa 28-24 September 9 in North Newton. Bethel doesn't run the flexbone but does employ a triple option offense that has been highly effective. The Threshers average 324 yards rushing, 420 total yards and are scoring 41 points per game. They had 405 total yards against Avila that included 264 on the ground. Bethel, like Friends, has a dynamic quarterback in DJ Ciers. He had 107 yards and two touchdowns running the ball and threw for 141 yards and two more scores against Avila. Ciers has 610 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season and averages 152.5 yards rushing and 95.5 yards passing per game.

 Bethel's defense has been stellar as well. Opponents are averaging 19.8 points and 72 yards rushing per game.

Linebacker Kade Miller has a team-best 31 tackles and linebacker Tate Seaboldt 29. Miller was the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown against Avila - his second pick six of the season.

"I was just super impressed by the overall effort by our guys. The energy on the sideline was incredible and the fans were awesome. The difference between 1-3 and 2-2 is massive - it was really a great night.&nbsp;Lara made great decisions with the ball and the zero sack thing is just huge. The final piece of this is making sure that we can stretch the defense vertically (with the passing game). Bethel is not the same offense (as Friends) but has a similar philosophy, they run the ball about 90 percent of the time. Their quarterback is extremely athletic and very, very fast. We need to find a way to make sure that he's on the ground at the end of the play and not making moves and cutting up the field. Their defense is very similar to Evangel who we didn't have a ton of success against."

The Coyotes return to Bissell Field in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex on Saturday for a game against McPherson. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Bethel 3-1<h2>THE SERIES</h2>Bethel's 30-24 victory last season in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex ended KWU's 13-game winning streak. It was the Coyotes first loss to the Threshers since the 2008 season. KWU has an 18-4 edge since the 2001 season.<h2>KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE</h2>The Coyotes evened their record with a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Friends last Saturday at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. The offense produced a season-high 353 yards that included a season-best 245 rushing yards.Nick Allsman&nbsp;led the ground attack with 125 yards on 17 carries and&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;had 96 yards on 19 attempts. Both scored a touchdown as well. Quarterback&nbsp;Richard Lara&nbsp;was 9 of 13 passing for 108 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown - a 74-yard catch and run by&nbsp;Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey&nbsp;in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 tie. Lara also ran for KWU's final score in the fourth quarter and was not sacked during the game.Luke Armstrong&nbsp;returned a punt 88 yards for touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Coyotes a 21-7 lead. He also returned a kickoff 28 yards and was chosen the KCAC's Special Teams Player of the Week.. Friends entered the game averaging just under 56 points and 533 total yards - 494 rushing - but had 388 total yard and 320 rushing Saturday. Linebacker&nbsp;Shaylan Lewis&nbsp;had a team-best 13 tackles, linebacker&nbsp;Ricco Moore&nbsp;11 and safety&nbsp;Julian Urioste&nbsp;10 for the Coyotes.KWU closes out play against the Kessinger Division a week from Saturday when McPherson comes to town. Following a bye week October 7 the Coyotes begin play against fellow Bissell Division opponents starting with Avila on October 14 in Kansas City, Missouri.<h2>BETHEL AT A GLANCE</h2> The Threshers defeated Avila 42-26 last Saturday in Kansas City. They led 35-6 at halftime but surrendered 20 points in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;They opened the season with victories over Sterling and Saint Mary but lost to Ottawa 28-24 September 9 in North Newton. Bethel doesn't run the flexbone but does employ a triple option offense that has been highly effective. The Threshers average 324 yards rushing, 420 total yards and are scoring 41 points per game. They had 405 total yards against Avila that included 264 on the ground. Bethel, like Friends, has a dynamic quarterback in DJ Ciers. He had 107 yards and two touchdowns running the ball and threw for 141 yards and two more scores against Avila. Ciers has 610 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season and averages 152.5 yards rushing and 95.5 yards passing per game. Bethel's defense has been stellar as well. Opponents are averaging 19.8 points and 72 yards rushing per game.Linebacker Kade Miller has a team-best 31 tackles and linebacker Tate Seaboldt 29. Miller was the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown against Avila - his second pick six of the season.<h2>KWU COACH MATT MYERS-</h2>"I was just super impressed by the overall effort by our guys. The energy on the sideline was incredible and the fans were awesome. The difference between 1-3 and 2-2 is massive - it was really a great night.&nbsp;Lara made great decisions with the ball and the zero sack thing is just huge. The final piece of this is making sure that we can stretch the defense vertically (with the passing game). Bethel is not the same offense (as Friends) but has a similar philosophy, they run the ball about 90 percent of the time. Their quarterback is extremely athletic and very, very fast. We need to find a way to make sure that he's on the ground at the end of the play and not making moves and cutting up the field. Their defense is very similar to Evangel who we didn't have a ton of success against."<h2>Next Week</h2>The Coyotes return to Bissell Field in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex on Saturday for a game against McPherson. Vaping is the new epidemic among youth. Twenty-five percent of Kansas high school students currently vape or have vaped. What do we know about vaping? What does it look like and who is behind this epidemic and why? So, how can we help educate the public and youth? We have learned many things about vaping in the past few years, it causes depression, is very addictive, and hard to quit. Kansas has several programs that are available to help combat this vaping problem among our youth. These topics will be discussed as well as the work going on in prevention.

November 1: Teen Stress and Anxiety: How Worried Do Parents Need to Be?

This program will examine the current state of teen mental health and decipher for parents what is normal teen stress versus when professional help maybe needed. Parents want to say the right thing when their child talks about their stresses, but sometimes it is hard to find the words. This will give parents scripts and strategies to talk about these tricky topics. Christy Perez, a licensed clinical counselor, will be available to answer any of those hard questions parents may have.

The general target date for planting wheat for optimum grain yields in Kansas is within a week of the best pest management planting date, or BPMP (formerly known as the “Hessian fly-free”) date. If forage production is the primary goal, earlier planting (mid-September) can increase forage yield. However, if grain yield is the primary goal, then waiting until the BPMP date to start planting is the best approach 

Planting in mid-September is ideal for dual-purpose wheat systems where forage yields need to be maximized while reducing the effects of early planting on reduced grain yields. However, due to the current dry conditions, coupled with the outlook of continued drought in Kansas, planting wheat for dual-purpose or for forage only does not seem like a viable option this year.

While the BPMP planting date on wheat yield will hold true for most years, they will largely depend on environmental conditions and disease pressure during the growing season.

 In some years, earlier-planted wheat does best and in some years the later-planted wheat does best, and these year-specific performances usually relate to the weather experienced in the fall and spring. For instance, early-planted fields in growing seasons with a warm fall might produce excessive biomass that will use an excessive amount of water during the fall. If the following spring is dry, soil water deficit during grain filling then can reduce grain yield. Conversely, a warm fall would favor tillering of a later-planted wheat crop, helping to compensate for this delay. 

The opposite is also true: in years with an early onset of cold temperatures during the fall, an earlier planted crop might perform better than a later-planted crop due to its ability to produce enough fall tillers to maximize grain yield. 

Research was conducted by Merle Witt with late-sown wheat in Garden City from 1985 through 1991. Averaged across all these years, delaying wheat sowing from October 1 to November 1 delayed heading date by 6 days and decreased wheat yields by 23%. The grain-filling period was progressively shortened by about 1.7 days and occurred under hotter temperatures (about 1.5°F) for every month of delay in sowing date.

In dry years, seedling emergence and stand establishment can be uneven. These dry conditions can also lead to poor crown root development and fall tillering. If fields become too wet to plant by mid-October and stay that way through the remainder of the fall, then producers end up planting much later than the optimum planting date.

 Following an unusual year, producers will often start planting earlier than the recommended date if soil conditions are good because the negative consequences of adverse conditions are fresh on their minds. However, planting early also increases the risk of other production problems including multiple diseases, insect pests, weed infestations, and undesirable growth of the crop, to name a few.
