Kamryn Marie McFarland, age 19, of Big Bow, Kansas, was born April 9, 2004, at 3:20 p.m. in Galveston, Texas. She passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 8:38 p.m. in Ulysses, Kansas. 

She is the daughter of Rex A. and Sheri (Creech) Julian and other mother, Terry McFarland.

Kamryn graduated high school at the age of 17. While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, played volleyball, and ran cross country. She then attended Garden City Community College in Garden City before transferring to Fort Hays University seeking a teaching degree. 

Kamryn volunteered at the Loaves and Fishes and Restored by Grace in Ulysses. This is where she met so many Christian women. This is where her journey with Christ began to shine. 

Kamryn taught third grade at Harvest Christian School. She loved her job and her students. Kamryn loved fearlessly and one of her great loves was Angel Antonio Miranda. They loved each other tremendously and had planned on making a future together.

Survivors include her parents, Rex and Sheri Julian of Big Bow; aunt, Terry (Teke) McFarland; sisters, Kaemyn McFarland, Britt Cantrell and husband Matt, Kristin Eldredge and husband Chris, Amanda Julian, Heather Julian, Tabitha Julian and Samantha Julian; brothers, Kyle Buse and wife Rachel, Vernon Buse and wife Jamie, Zachary Julian, Nathan Julian and Skylar Julian; many nieces, nephews and cousins, Haleigh, Gracie, Ella, Kiki, Landon, Lexie, Matthew and Emerson; and a multitude of friends and other family members.

Memorial service will be Monday, October 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson. The service will also be available on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Inurnment will be in Woodson, Texas, on October 13, 2023. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Harvest Christian School in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.

On October 4 at approximately 7:38 p.m. the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire in an apartment complex located at 1414 E. 29th Steet in Hays.

Initial reports from neighbors calling 911 were that a smoke alarm was going off in the apartment with smoke coming from the front door and possibly someone was inside. 

Arriving fire crews found smoke coming from the front door. The firefighters had to force the door open and discovered an unconscious female on a couch. Firefighters rescued the female occupant and extinguished the smoldering fire. The female occupant was transported to the hospital.

 The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental due to cigarette smoking. 

Damage to the apartment was minor smoke damage and some fire damage to chair cushion. 

The Hays Fire Department would like to thank Ellis County Communications, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department for their assistance.

Unconscious woman rescued from smoldering fire in Hays apartment

ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Simone Biles and her teammates including Leanne Wong of Overland Park, Kansas were far from perfect, and yet nothing could stand in the way of a victory that set a record for both the U.S. women's team and the greatest gymnast in history.

The U.S. women earned a record seventh consecutive team title at the gymnastics world championships on Wednesday night. For Biles, it was also her 33rd major championship medal — across the worlds and Olympics — to make her the most decorated female gymnast ever.

And it's fitting that it came in Antwerp, the Belgian port city where Biles came to international prominence 10 years ago by winning her first world title in 2013.

“It wasn’t Team USA’s best day,” Biles said. "It’s crazy, we still pulled it out. So I’m really, really proud of the team.”

The American team of Biles, Leanne Wong, Shilese Jones, Skye Blakely and Joscelyn Roberson&nbsp; combined for a total of 167.729 points to edge second-place Brazil and France.

The U.S. team won by a margin of 2.199 points as the final proved to be a closer contest than anticipated after the Americans put up a dominant performance in qualifying to finish more than five points ahead of the field.

“We had some mistakes here and there, but just keep going, keep relying on our training,” Biles said. “But I think this team that we have brought this year has the most great courage and fight. ... We had so many emotions going throughout the day.”

The U.S. women have won gold in the team event at every world championship that included a team competition since 2011. Their victory in Antwerp broke a tie with the Chinese men for the longest streak of consecutive team titles.

Biles now has 26 world championship medals, 20 of them gold, to go with her seven Olympic medals, including the 2016 Olympic title. Her 33 combined medals at the sport’s two biggest events are one more than what Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union achieved.

Russia was banned from the event because of sanctions imposed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) as a result of the war against Ukraine. In the absence of their Russian rivals — the defending Olympic champions — the Americans were the overwhelming favorites.

But the U.S team overcame an early scare as Roberson was forced out of the event even before it started after she seemed to hurt an ankle while warming up at the vault. She was helped off the mat and subbed by Leann Wong.

“My ankle just ... popped,” Roberson said.

Jones then kicked off the competition smoothly for the Americans with a Double Twist Yurchenko, with only a small hop. Wong responded to the last-minute call with a clean effort before Biles opted for the slightly safer “Cheng” vault rather than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmFMXk3WQow">Yurchenko Double Pike she performed during qualifying on Sunday.</a>

The Americans amassed 42.966 points and were second behind China after the first rotation following the Chinese gymnasts' excellent display on uneven bars.

Biles and her teammates then bested their Chinese opponents’ performance on bars as they took the overall lead with a margin of 1.467 points. They increased it a bit further after the beam — despite a sixth-place finish on that apparatus — as Biles made up for the modest 11.700 Wong received by scoring 14.300 with a solid routine.

Biles capped off a successful night for the U.S team with a spectacular floor routine rewarded by a 15.166.

Biles is competing at her first international competition following a two-year absence. Her previous appearance was at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics, where she was hampered by a bout with a mental block known as “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2020-tokyo-olympics-gymnastics-simone-biles-twisties-9a0a4d25bb485ab0a2b237c4847f09ce">the twisties</a>&nbsp;” that gymnasts can experience while in the air, and withdrew from several events.

Now she's back in the same city that catapulted her to international fame a decade ago, winning the first of her five world all-around titles as a 16-year-old prodigy.

“Each and every time you are crowned world champion, it feels a little bit different,” Biles said. “I'm still surprised that I'm still going, I'm 26, I'm a little bit older. It's different, but it's exciting.”

Biles, who posted an overall score of 58.732 points, is also the favorite to add a sixth all-around title on Friday, although she will likely face a strong challenge from Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, the reigning world all-around champion. The event finals are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Andrade led Brazil to its first medal ever in the women's team competition. The French team, spurred on by the hundreds of fans cheering for them, secured their first women’s team medal at the world championships since a silver in 1950.

Kansas gymnast helps U.S. win gold at world championships

Crawl to End Alz, a bar crawl, is planned for Saturday, October 28 to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Hays.

MANHATTAN — October is&nbsp;National Pet Wellness Month, and K-State veterinarian Susan Nelson is sharing tips to foster&nbsp;a healthy lifestyle for furry family members.

"Pet wellness entails what we do at home to care for pets as well as the medical care given by your veterinarian,"&nbsp;said Nelson,&nbsp;clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>.&nbsp;

"From regular check-ups to maintaining a balanced diet, ensuring exercise and addressing mental health needs, it's crucial to give pets the care and attention they deserve."

According to Nelson, incorporating preventive measures&nbsp;—&nbsp;such as vaccinations, regular vet visits, dental care and appropriate nutrition&nbsp;—&nbsp;keeps&nbsp;pets in optimal health, preventing potential illnesses and&nbsp;preparing them for long and&nbsp;fulfilling&nbsp;lives.&nbsp;She said mental stimulation, companionship and a loving environment are equally vital for their overall well-being.

K-State veterinarian shares tips for Pet Wellness Month 

Dean Scott, 85, died on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at his home in Ness City. He was born on November 11, 1937 at Dighton the son of Richard Earl and Hazel Alberta (Leonard) Scott. 

He married JoAnn Mack on October 21, 1965 at Mesa, Arizona.

Dean graduated from Dighton High School with the class of 1955. 

He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. After his discharge he returned to Dighton before taking computer training education. He moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where he was a Computer Programmer for Northern Arizona University and then later become involved in real estate in Flagstaff. 

After retiring he moved to Ness City. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed playing golf.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn Scott and brother Alan and Marsha Scott of Dighton.

Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Dighton Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Jennifer Bradford officiating. Military honors will be by 1st Infantry Honor Guard of Fort Riley and American Legion Post # 190 Honor Guard.

Gregg Douglas Cooper, 74, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 3,2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex. Gregg was born in Hoxie, Kansas, April 25, 1949, to Mark and Rose (Meier) Cooper. 

He grew up in Hoxie, Kansas and attended the Hoxie Schools, graduating from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1967. 

After graduation, Gregg entered the United States Navy. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier off the cost of Vietnam. He served his country for five years. 

Gregg married Carol Ostmeyer on April 23, 1969, at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie. They celebrated 54 years of marriage. Gregg and Carol made their home in Hoxie where they raised their three sons.

Gregg worked at Heim TV and Appliance installing and repairing HVAC systems among other services until he retired. Gregg was never idle, after retirement he continued to do HVAC installation and repairs. 

Gregg and Carol enjoyed camping in their RV at regional lakes until they found their second home at Webster Lake. They would spend their summers at Webster Lake. Fishing was another activity Gregg really loved. In Gregg’s eyes there was nothing better than camping, fishing, and visiting with friends and family at the lake. The loves of his life were his wife, sons, and grandchildren.

Gregg is survived by his wife Carol of Hoxie, Kansas; sons Daryl Cooper of Hill City, Kansas, Scott Cooper (Tasha) of Hoxie, Kansas, Doug Cooper (Emily) of Overland Park, Kansas; brothers Bruce Cooper (Jeree) of Hoisington, Kansas, Brad Cooper (Becky) of Newton, Kansas; sister Marsha Moss of Hoxie, Kansas; grandchildren Josh Taylor, Cayle Taylor, Zach Cooper, Carley Cooper, Rose Cooper, and Luke Cooper; great-grandchildren Kadance, Harper, Jaxsen, and Kendal Jo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Rose Cooper.

Homecoming weekend at Fort Hays State University drew hundreds of alumni, friends, and community members back to campus. Graduates nationwide traveled to Hays to celebrate special memories from their time at FHSU.

Homecoming festivities kicked off last Thursday with more than 40 teams of FHSU alumni and friends playing in a sold-out golf tournament at Smoky Hill Country Club. Due to high winds, the annual bonfire turned into a party at Lewis Field Stadium, where Tiger fans enjoyed a pep rally, music, and lawn games.

Friday opened with a ribbon cutting for the newly constructed Wilmer and Lorena Kellogg Training Center at the Hays City Sportsmen’s Club, north of Hays. The facility was completed earlier this year and is home to the nationally recognized FHSU Shotgun Team. Meanwhile, this year’s Alumni Award winners connected with campus and community members in Forsyth Library at an Awardee Meet and Greet reception. Guests of the annual Alumni and Friends Awards and Recognition Banquet Friday night further honored the six distinguished award winners. &nbsp;

The classes of 1963 and 1973 met for their 50 and 60-year reunions on Friday, where members of the class of 1973 were inducted into FHSU’s Half Century Club. After the social, luncheon, and induction concluded, classmates reveled in a bus and campus tour to see changes throughout Hays and the FHSU campus. The group reconvened Saturday morning for a reunion breakfast before joining President Mason for the parade in downtown Hays.

The 50 and 60-year classes weren’t the only classmates reuniting on campus this Homecoming. Finance graduates and former football team members came together for reunions and open houses and appreciated the opportunity to gather during Homecoming.

Saturday evening, Tiger football fans headed to Lewis Field Stadium to tailgate with the FHSU Alumni Office and classmates before kickoff of the big game. The Fort Hays State Tigers dominated Lincoln, perfectly concluding Homecoming 2023.

“Thank you to our students, alumni, and Tiger fans for making Homecoming weekend one to remember,” said Carolyn Tatro, FHSU alumni director. “We can’t wait to see you all again next year!”

Anthony P. Geist of Hays, Kansas passed away September 30, 2023 at Hays Medical Center.

Anthony Peter Geist, age 68, passed away on September 30, 2023, in Hays, Kansas. He was born on August 26, 1955, in Hill City, Kansas, to parents William Mike and Marian Anna (Trower) Geist. 

On May 15, 1982, he married the love of his life, Theresa Flegler.

Anthony's career began as a cement truck driver for Allied of Hays before transitioning into a mechanic role at the Auto Mall and Hays Ford. He had a passion for tinkering with cars, which he pursued as a hobby throughout his life. In addition to his love for automobiles, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, immersing himself in the serene beauty of nature.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa, of Hays, his mother, Marian, of Hays, two sons, Michael Geist and Matthew Geist, and Matthew's wife, Kylie, all residing in Hays. He is also survived by a daughter, Angela Alvarez of Wichita, a brother, Don Geist of Texas, four sisters, Mary Lou Taylor of Oklahoma, Marge Herbert of Wisconsin, Monica Geist of Salina, and Marita Geist of Topeka. Anthony's legacy lives on through his 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Mike Geist, and a brother, Jim Geist.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 6, 2023, at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, located at 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. A memorial visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the service time.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE)&nbsp;is holding public meetings to help public water supply systems and their customers learn about the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new Lead and Cooper Rule Revisions (LCRR). Under the LCRR, public water supply systems are required to prepare and maintain an inventory of publicly and privately owned service line materials. This inventory is to be submitted to KDHE by October 16, 2024.

Public water supply system decision-makers, operators and the public are encouraged to attend to learn more about the inventory requirements and actions that can be taken to reduce lead exposure risks in drinking water.&nbsp;

Piping and plumbing fixtures containing lead are a potential health risk in drinking water. Some homes (typically built before 1988) may have lead service lines that connect to the public water supply system. Young children, infants and fetuses are particularly vulnerable to lead in drinking water and water used for formula because lead's physical and behavioral health effects occur at lower exposure levels in children.

MANHATTAN — A public hearing will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2023, to consider the adoption of proposed regulations that govern the administration of the Kansas Seed Law. The hearing will be held in person at the Kansas Department of Agriculture at 1320 Research Park Dr. in Manhattan, as well as via video conferencing system.

KDA is proposing four new regulations along with amendments to two existing regulations, all of which implement revisions and offer clarification to the Kansas Seed Law. The new regulations define terms, set guidelines about analysis to determine violations, establish a list of restricted weed seeds, establish a list of prohibited weed seeds, and clarify rules for seed labels.

For the most part, these changes implement revisions that were made to the Kansas Seed Law during the 2022 legislative session and also make minor clarifications. The only change imposed by these regulations that has the potential to have a practical effect on the agricultural seed industry is the addition of Caucasian bluestem and yellow bluestem seeds to the list of restricted weed seeds. This addition is proposed to help safeguard the agricultural industry from the threat of invasive weeds which is part of the agency’s mission to protect plant health.

KDA welcomes public input on any portion of the proposed regulations — especially the addition of the new species, including those species of Old World Bluestem — to the list of restricted weed seeds. New regulations under consideration for Kansas Seed Law

Hays is known for relatively high land prices for development.&nbsp;

City Manager Toby Dougherty said Thursday that's not always a bad thing.

A perfect example was the unanimous approval by city commissioners for the KWCI Addition final plat in the 24oo block of Canterbury.

It's a plat on the site of the former St. John’s Nursing Home, which was razed when Via Christi was built south of that location.

"Look at tonight's agenda and this property where water, sewer, and streets already exist. It's a good infill development," Dougherty said, "and the city doesn't have the expense of building utilities."

Infill development is&nbsp;the process of developing vacant or under-utilized properties within existing urban areas that are already largely developed.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"If you go down Main Street you're going to see a former attorney's building being converted into a new business.&nbsp;

"Right next to the First Care Clinic, there's another building being converted.

"If you drive around this part of town (city hall is at 1507 Main), you're gonna see a lot of dilapidated houses that were torn down and rebuilt."

Dougherty pointed out other locations in Hays where business infill has occurred, the Brian Ruder Agency at 27th and Indian Trail and Scooters Coffee on Vine Street.

"I think a lot of that was a result of high land prices. Just want to make sure you guys are thinking about the big picture perspective," he told commissioners.

The proposed KWCI plat includes six total lots ranging in size from 7,400 square feet to 28,000 square feet, allowing for future development of multi-family housing on the property owned by KC Western Investments.&nbsp;

The Hays Area Planning Commission had already approved the final plat.

Commissioners also approved $94,608 for fiber optic cabling services by Nex-Tech, Hays, to provide connectivity to the new fire station being built at 41st and Post Road.&nbsp;

The project is being done in coordination with Ellis County and the construction of its new public works facility, lowering costs for both entities.&nbsp;The county's share of $144,866 is larger because of the further distance to the new public works building.

The new fire station will also house the city's data server center. Most of the city's servers are in city hall, which lies in the flood plain and has previously flooded and had leaks in its flat roof during hard rains.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioners also agreed to a request from the owner of Big Creek Crossing, Brooklyn, New York, for an extension to the first amendment of the 2014 Community Improvement District development agreement dated March 24, 2022. The extension will allow the owner an additional 18 months to gather qualifying expenses for the appropriation of the Community Improvement District funds to help further improve the property.&nbsp;

The Big Creek Crossing owner has indicated they'll be using a portion of the remaining funds to upgrade additional HVAC systems and expend funds for the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/27adb74c-594a-47e0-95f1-cdb3fda5a561">newly signed tenant, AutoZone</a>, which will be leasing the spot that previously housed the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1121bbfc-8add-4b0d-97f3-d973ab1c1ec5">Habitat for Humanity ReStore</a>.&nbsp;

Prior to the meeting, Mayor Shaun Musil signed a proclamation for observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October in a ceremony with representatives of Options Domestic and Sexual Violence. Services.

🎙️🎥 City approves final plat on housing development in Hays

The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting nine meetings across the state in October as part of the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) Local Consult process. KDOT holds Local Consult meetings every two years to discuss regional transportation project priorities with Kansans.

Attendees will have an opportunity to share their region’s transportation priorities, hear about investments being made in transportation in their area and learn about various grant funding programs available through KDOT.

These meetings are an important step in collecting public input for the IKE program – the state’s current 10-year transportation improvement program. They are open to all Kansans.

Hays to host KDOT Local Consult meeting for northwest Kansas

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers walked off the job Wednesday in multiple states, kicking off a major health care strike in an extraordinary year for U.S. labor organizing and work stoppages.

Kaiser Permanente is one of the country’s larger insurers and health care system operators, serving nearly 13 million people. The nonprofit company, based in Oakland, California, said its 39 hospitals, including emergency rooms, will remain open during the picketing, though appointments and non-urgent procedures could be delayed.

The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, representing about 85,000 of the health system's employees nationally, approved a strike for three days in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, and for one day in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

“They’re not listening to the frontline health care workers,” said Mikki Fletchall, a licensed vocational nurse based in a Kaiser medical office in Camarillo, California. “We’re striking because of our patients.”

Early Wednesday, workers at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center cheered as the strike deadline arrived. The strikers include licensed vocational nurses, home health aides and ultrasound sonographers, as well as technicians in the radiology, X-ray, surgical, pharmacy and emergency departments.

Brittany Everidge, a ward clerk transcriber in the medical center's maternal child health department, was among those on the picket line. She said because of staffing shortages, pregnant people in active labor can be stuck waiting for hours to be checked in. Other times, too few transcribers can lead to delays in creating and updating charts for new babies.

“We don’t ever want to be in a situation where the nurses have to do our job," she said.

Doctors are not participating in the strike, and Kaiser said it was bringing in thousands of temporary workers.

The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ups-strike-union-contract-negotiations-deadline-7be8c3d04e043d6b653f563075a6a39f">transportation</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/writers-strike-deal-hollywood-vote-actors-d3119d670a4fd3449773bf8f4026fb2b">entertainment</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-hotel-workers-strike-unite-here-0858937937766b75a1bfd10e9e41525f">hospitality</a>.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-new-york-city-nursing-care-strikes-covid-4c1c337dbd9727118be6975cf868a626">health care</a>&nbsp;industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems that were exacerbated greatly by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unions representing Kaiser workers in August asked for a $25 hourly minimum wage, as well as increases of 7% each year in the first two years and 6.25% each year in the two years afterward.

Union members say understaffing is boosting the hospital system’s profits but hurting patients, and executives have been bargaining in bad faith during negotiations.

Tonya Harris, who was on the picket line in Irvine, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Los Angeles in Orange County, said medical assistants like her are often asked to double up with doctors – each of whom has up to 20 patients – instead of working one-to-one.

“You’re running around and you’re trying to basically keep up with the flow,” she said, wearing her strike captain vest over her scrubs.

The single mother with two kids going into college said she also can’t afford to live in Orange County on her current pay.

Kaiser has proposed minimum hourly wages of between $21 and $23 next year depending on the location.

Since 2022, the hospital system has hired 51,000 workers and has plans to add 10,000 more people by the end of the month.

Kaiser Permanente reported $2.1 billion in net income for this year’s second quarter on more than $25 billion in operating revenue. But the company said it still was dealing with cost headwinds and challenges from inflation and labor shortages.

Kaiser executive Michelle Gaskill-Hames defended the company and said its practices, compensation and retention are better than its competitors, even as the entire sector faces the same challenges.

“Our focus, for the dollars that we bring in, are to keep them invested in value-based care,” said Gaskill-Hames, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals of Southern California and Hawaii.

She added that Kaiser only faces 7% turnover compared to the industry standard of 21%, despite the effects of the pandemic.

“I think coming out of the pandemic, health care workers have been completely burned out," she said. "The trauma that was felt caring for so many COVID patients, and patients that died, was just difficult.”

The workers’ last contract was negotiated in 2019, before the pandemic.

Hospitals generally have struggled in recent years with high labor costs, staffing shortages and rising levels of uncompensated care, according to Rick Gundling, a senior vice president with the Healthcare Financial Management Association, a nonprofit that works with health care finance executives.

Most of their revenue is fixed, coming from government-funded programs like Medicare and Medicaid, Gundling noted. He said that means revenue growth is “only possible by increasing volumes, which is difficult even under the best of circumstances.”

Meanwhile, workers calling for higher wages, better working conditions and job security, especially since the end of the pandemic, have been increasingly willing to walk out on the job as employers face a greater need for workers.

The California legislature has sent Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom a bill that would increase the minimum wage for the state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-fast-food-health-care-workers-wage-increase-3c1e3b2815523816b5e5d1ffc535aaad">455,000 health care workers to $25 per hour</a>&nbsp;over the next decade. The governor has until Oct. 14 to decide whether to sign or veto it.

The strikers include licensed vocational nurses, home health aides and ultrasound sonographers, as well as technicians in the radiology, X-ray, surgical, pharmacy and emergency departments.Brittany Everidge, a ward clerk transcriber in the medical center's maternal child health department, was among those on the picket line. She said because of staffing shortages, pregnant people in active labor can be stuck waiting for hours to be checked in. Other times, too few transcribers can lead to delays in creating and updating charts for new babies.“We don’t ever want to be in a situation where the nurses have to do our job," she said.Doctors are not participating in the strike, and Kaiser said it was bringing in thousands of temporary workers.The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ups-strike-union-contract-negotiations-deadline-7be8c3d04e043d6b653f563075a6a39f">transportation</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/writers-strike-deal-hollywood-vote-actors-d3119d670a4fd3449773bf8f4026fb2b">entertainment</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-hotel-workers-strike-unite-here-0858937937766b75a1bfd10e9e41525f">hospitality</a>.The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-new-york-city-nursing-care-strikes-covid-4c1c337dbd9727118be6975cf868a626">health care</a>&nbsp;industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems that were exacerbated greatly by the COVID-19 pandemic.Unions representing Kaiser workers in August asked for a $25 hourly minimum wage, as well as increases of 7% each year in the first two years and 6.25% each year in the two years afterward.Union members say understaffing is boosting the hospital system’s profits but hurting patients, and executives have been bargaining in bad faith during negotiations.Tonya Harris, who was on the picket line in Irvine, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Los Angeles in Orange County, said medical assistants like her are often asked to double up with doctors – each of whom has up to 20 patients – instead of working one-to-one.“You’re running around and you’re trying to basically keep up with the flow,” she said, wearing her strike captain vest over her scrubs.The single mother with two kids going into college said she also can’t afford to live in Orange County on her current pay.Kaiser has proposed minimum hourly wages of between $21 and $23 next year depending on the location.Since 2022, the hospital system has hired 51,000 workers and has plans to add 10,000 more people by the end of the month.Kaiser Permanente reported $2.1 billion in net income for this year’s second quarter on more than $25 billion in operating revenue. But the company said it still was dealing with cost headwinds and challenges from inflation and labor shortages.Kaiser executive Michelle Gaskill-Hames defended the company and said its practices, compensation and retention are better than its competitors, even as the entire sector faces the same challenges.“Our focus, for the dollars that we bring in, are to keep them invested in value-based care,” said Gaskill-Hames, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals of Southern California and Hawaii.She added that Kaiser only faces 7% turnover compared to the industry standard of 21%, despite the effects of the pandemic.“I think coming out of the pandemic, health care workers have been completely burned out," she said. "The trauma that was felt caring for so many COVID patients, and patients that died, was just difficult.”The workers’ last contract was negotiated in 2019, before the pandemic.Hospitals generally have struggled in recent years with high labor costs, staffing shortages and rising levels of uncompensated care, according to Rick Gundling, a senior vice president with the Healthcare Financial Management Association, a nonprofit that works with health care finance executives.Most of their revenue is fixed, coming from government-funded programs like Medicare and Medicaid, Gundling noted. He said that means revenue growth is “only possible by increasing volumes, which is difficult even under the best of circumstances.”Meanwhile, workers calling for higher wages, better working conditions and job security, especially since the end of the pandemic, have been increasingly willing to walk out on the job as employers face a greater need for workers.The California legislature has sent Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom a bill that would increase the minimum wage for the state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-fast-food-health-care-workers-wage-increase-3c1e3b2815523816b5e5d1ffc535aaad">455,000 health care workers to $25 per hour</a>&nbsp;over the next decade. SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue&nbsp; investigating a suspect in connection with Sept. 24,&nbsp; hit-and-run accident that left a bicyclist in critical condition.

Montez Glasgow, 30, Wichita, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, no valid driver’s license and fail to yield right of way on a left turn.  The license crime is a misdemeanor, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 7p.m. Sept. 24, police were dispatched to a hit-and-run involving a car and a bicyclist at the intersection of McCormick and Meridian, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

First responders located the bicyclist lying on the street with critical injuries. EMS transported the bicyclist to a local hospital for treatment of critical injuries. Police had no update on the victim Monday.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect later identified as 30-year-old&nbsp; Montrez Glasgow was driving west on McCormick and turned south onto Meridian striking the bicyclist.<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=260277"> Glasgow </a>left the scene prior to the officer’s arrival.
