The event is the perfect opportunity to explore Young AmeriTowne, learn more about Nex-Gen Internships and our other wonderful programs, eat a terrific meal, connect with youth stakeholders, and make a lasting impact through our silent auction. (Lots of great items are already pouring in!)

Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth marks 10th year with Gala Night

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team dropped a three-set match against Northwest Missouri State on Friday (Oct. 6), 25-15, 25-18, 25-18. The Tigers are now 7-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while the Bearcats move to 9-6 on the year and 4-3 in MIAA action.

The Bearcats jumped out in front to start, scoring the first six points. Kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/claire-olson/7499">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/riley-tinder/7504">Riley Tinder</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers close within four, 8-4, before the visitors regained control en route to a 25-15 first-set win.

After totaling eight kills in the first set, the Tigers upped that total to 12 in the second frame, just two short of NWMSU's 14 second-set kills. The Bearcats managed to pick up the win, however, due to five NWMSU blocks in the frame. FHSU trailed by midway through the frame, 16-14, before a 9-4 run gave the green and white a 25-18 victory.

Another Olson kill helped FHSU pull within 16-14 again in the third set, but another big Bearcat run helped NWMSU complete the sweep.

Jordan Webster for Newman also record five saves in the first period. Fort Hays outshot Newman 9-7 in the first frame.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/allison-worley/7605">Allison Worley</a>&nbsp;led the attack in the first with two shots, both on goal. The Tigers came out of the halftime break with intensity, controlling the ball for great chunk of the first 20 minutes of the second period. Fort Hays State was finally able to break through and snap the tie off a goal from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/montserrat-diaz/7282">Montserrat Diaz</a>. Diaz's fourth goal of the year came with 27:06 left on the clock and was assisted by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/alex-hutton/7287">Alex Hutton</a>. Shortly after the first goal,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/hannah-mares/7293">Hannah Mares</a>&nbsp;capitalized off of a free ball that rattled around within the box, knocking it home to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. From that point on the Tiger defense was able to stay flawless to secure their sixth shutout of the season.

Fort Hays State rattled off 21 shots, nine on goal in the conference win.

⚽ Diaz, Mares second half goals lift FHSU past Jets

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State cross country teams had another good showing Friday (Oct. 6) at the Hornet Harrier Invitational, with the women placing first and the men finishing in a tie for first but placing second due to tiebreaking procedures.

The Tiger women placed five runners in the top eight, three of which were inside the top five. FHSU won the team competition with a miniscule 23 points, 60 points better than second place.

The Tiger men also had three of the top five placers and four of the top seven, with FHSU and Emporia State both compiling 29 points. Emporia State took the tiebreak 3-2, which pits the top Hornet finisher against the top Tiger finisher, the second ESU placer against the second FHSU finisher, etc.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/regan-hodsden/7642">Regan Hodsden</a>&nbsp;shaved more than 37 seconds off the five-kilometer course record, finishing first with a time of 17:34.8.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/jaycee-vath/7646">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;also broke the old course record, finishing close behind in second after crossing the line in 17:38.7.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/darian-hudgeons/7643">Darian Hudgeons</a>&nbsp;traversed the course in 18:15.7, good for seventh, while Abbey Hudson (18:49.4) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/madison-sutterfield/7681">Madison Sutterfield</a>&nbsp;(18:55.8) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the field of 48 competitors.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/grant-bradley/7649">Grant Bradley</a>&nbsp;was the first Tiger male finisher across the line, placing second in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 24:43.7. Bradley recorded an average mile time of just over five minutes.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/corbin-ricke/7661">Corbin Ricke</a>&nbsp;(25:49.3) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/jaret-pfizenmaier/7659">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>&nbsp;(25:52.7) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/ethan-fisher/7654">Ethan Fisher</a>&nbsp;crossed the line in seventh when the clock read 26:00.6.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/trever-medina/7657">Trever Medina</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger top five in 11th place, compiling a time of 26:17.0.

ESU's Jaime Diaz won the men's title with a time of 24:43.7.

The Tigers will now take two weeks to prepare for the 2023 MIAA Championships, slated for Friday, October 21 at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo.

Jeffrey Allen “Bubba” Nelssen passed away in Wichita, KS at his home on October 1, 2023.

Jeff was born to Vernie and Joyce Nelssen March 11, 1965 in Smith Center, KS. Jeff graduated from Fort Hays State University.

He married Traci Whitney on February 16, 1991.

Jeff excelled in marketing in his work history with KJLS Radio in Hays, KS, Cox Communications, KSN of Wichita, and Ember Hope of Newton, KS. Jeff had a love of sports and weight lifting and especially supporting KSU football.

Jeff is survived by his wife Traci and son Kaylor; siblings Jim (Stephanie) Nelssen, Janeen (Bob) Hughs, Judy (Dennis) Schmidt; nine nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Lana Whitney, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Brent and Tammy Werth, niece Whitney Werth, and nephew Jarrod Werth.

Susan Ayres, our loving mom, grandma, gigi and friend left her earthly body on Friday, October 6, 2023, at the age of 77. Susan was born on July 21, 1946, to Daniel and Jean Turbett (Gopel) in Waukon, IA. 

After marrying the love of her life, William Bill Ayres in 1970, the family relocated to Kansas and they spent most of their lives building a family in Great Bend, Kan.&nbsp;

Susan worked as a traveling CNA and retired from Larned State Hospital in 2011 and spent her retirement years in Garnett, Kan. Susan was known as a mom to many and enjoyed crafting, sewing and spending time with family. She was always the life of any party with her dancing and beverages in hand.&nbsp;

Susan is survived by her children, Gary (Jenny) Ayres of McPherson, Steffanie (Garry) Kirkland of Topeka and Holly Ayres of Salina; her grandchildren, Kylee (Austin) Stout of Hutchinson, Kortney (Ty) Ellis of Pittsburg, Matthew (Haleigh) Kirkland of Osage City, Alexys (William Cody) Johnson of Topeka, Alyssa Hedges of Salina; her two great-grandchildren, Brantley and Paisley Ellis that were the greatest joys of her life.

Susan is preceded in death by her husband, William Bill Ayres who left us too soon in November 1998; her parents, Daniel and Jean Turbett, and three siblings, Betty, Danny and Pat precede her. &nbsp;

Susan was the youngest sister of seven siblings, and the remaining siblings surviviving are Ramona Moore of Oakdale, Minn., Rhonda Rebik of Clifton, Colo., James (Sally) Turbett of Debuque, Ia., and Bob (Charlotte) of Tucson, Ariz.; and her many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from noon – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Great Bend Cemetery. A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. 

These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.  Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water.

Blue-green algae warning continues for Fossil Lake in Russell

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union said Friday it will not expand&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/auto-workers-strike-negotiations-progress-gm-stellantis-ford-4dc51e9f463022bc3794e9615d8a705b">its strikes</a>&nbsp;against Detroit's three automakers after General Motors made a breakthrough concession on unionizing electric vehicle battery plants.

Union President Shawn Fain told workers in a video appearance that additional plants could be added to the strikes later.

The announcement of the pause in expanding the strikes came shortly after GM agreed to bring electric vehicle battery plants into the UAW's national contract, essentially assuring that they will be unionized.

Fain said GM's move will change the future of the union and the auto industry.

He said GM made the change after the union threatened to strike at a plant in Arlington, Texas, that makes highly profitable large SUVs.

“Today, under the threat of a major financial hit, they leapfrogged the pack in terms of a just transition” from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-electric-cars-uaw-strike-d73f259bf5e9242340e912ad1e9b4aa9">combustion engines to electric vehicles</a>, he said. “Our strike is working, but we’re not there yet.”

In addition to large general pay raises, cost of living pay, restoration of pensions for new hires and other items, the union wanted to represent 10 battery factories proposed by the companies.

The companies have said the plants, mostly joint ventures with South Korean battery makers, had to be bargained separately.

Friday's change means the the four U.S. GM battery plants would now be covered under the union's master agreement and GM would bargain with the union' “which I think is a monumental development,” said Marick Masters, a business professor at Wayne State University in Detroit.

He said the details of GM's offer, made in writing, will have to be scrutinized.

Free coyote trapping, predator calling program Oct. 18 in Hays

Dale Joseph Vrbas was born May 15,1950 in Oberlin, KS, the third child of Victor and Margie (Havel) Vrbas. He departed this life Sunday October 1, 2023, the age of 73. 

Dale lived most of his life in Atwood, KS. He graduated from Atwood High School in 1968. While in high school he participated in track and field and received varsity letters and numerous medals. He was also an academic honors student. 

After graduation Dale attended Fort Hays State University for a short period of time and then began to expand his horizons.

Dale worked for his brother Duane in California and his brother Dennis in Kansas City. Dale loved tinkering with anything that related to mechanical or technical things. His love of computers was enormous. Dale could fix almost anything, washers, car engines, appliances big and small and televisions, to name just a few.

A joy of Dale’s was traveling with his family. His nieces and nephews would say, “traveling with Uncle Dale was like traveling with an adult playmate.” He was a kid at heart. Uncle Dale taught them how to snow ski. He taught them how to play ping pong and taught them a certain paddle grip that would assure them a win. He unlocked the winning ways of all the original computer games. He was also a very competitive and successful pool player. Dale loved sky diving, but that talent was not allowed to be passed on to the nieces and nephews.

Dale stayed in Atwood taking care of his Mom and attending to all her needs until the end of her life, which was so very appreciated by the family. 

Dale leaves behind two brothers, Duane Vrbas and his wife Cheryl, of Acampo, CA, Dennis Vrbas and his wife Becky, of Olathe, KS; two nieces; two nephews; five great nieces; six great-nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Dale will always be remembered for his contagious smile, his youthful and playful lifestyle and his free spirit. Dale, it is now time to soar high and far with that free spirit. You will be missed but never forgotten. We love you.

While in high school he participated in track and field and received varsity letters and numerous medals. He was also an academic honors student. Michael J. “Mike” Peschka, of Wilson, KS, passed away on October 4, 2023, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth, KS at the age of 70. He was born on April 30, 1953, to James and Rosie (Pelz) Peschka in Ellsworth. 

He married Karen J. Vague on April 28, 1973 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. They were blessed with two daughters, Darcy and Darrin.

Mike grew up on a farm south of Wilson and graduated from Wilson High School in 1971. He went on to Salina Vo-Tech for two years and then worked for Enron and then Mid America Energy where he retired. After retirement, he taught at Barton County Community College.

Mike was very active in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Sons of the American Legion. He was the mayor of Wilson for two terms, served on the fire department for 30 years and economic development in Wilson for 10 years. He also coached his daughters’ softball teams. Mike was a regular blood donor and during his illness required massive amounts of blood and platelets. The family would like to encourage anyone who is able to donate, to please do so as there is such a need.

Mike is survived by his wife, Karen of the home in Wilson; daughters, Darcy (Brad) Hansen of Ellsworth and Darrin (Jon Catalini) Peschka of Camarillo, CA; brother, Randy (Nancy) Peschka of Ellsworth; sisters, Linda Nowlin of Joshua, TX and Karen M. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — There’s only one team in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/NFL">the NFL</a>&nbsp;that Patrick Mahomes has yet to beat.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/minnesota-vikings">Minnesota Vikings</a>, it figures, are the only one he’s never faced.

Matching up with the two-time NFL MVP and his defending champion&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kansas-city-chiefs">Kansas City Chiefs</a>&nbsp;is hardly a recipe for maintaining the momentum generated last week by their vulnerable defense, but the Vikings of course don’t get to choose their schedule.

What players with any pride would want it any other way? It’s time for the team that won 13 games and the NFC North last season to show it can still be a factor in 2023 and keep those long-frustrated fans from obsessing over next year’s draft position.

Playing the Chiefs (3-1) ought to be as accurate of a measuring stick as the Vikings (1-3) could find for the first weekend in October.

“You want to play against the best,” Vikings safety&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vikings-harrison-smith-7afe69b28169eb9763bd290b657fb73b">Harrison Smith</a>&nbsp;said, “and these guys certainly have been that in recent history.”

With two Super Bowl titles in his first five seasons as the starter, all those statistical accomplishments and his unique blend of fearlessness and improvisation that has gone a long way toward redefining quarterback play for a new generation, Mahomes doesn't have much left to accomplish on the field.

Defeating the Vikings to complete the checklist of 31 other teams would be an impressive feat, considering half of the league only appears on the schedule every four years in the NFL's formula for interconference competition.

“I just want to win every week," said Mahomes, who is 67-17 in the regular season and 11-3 in the playoffs as a starter. "It’s not necessarily beating this team because I haven’t played them. It’s going in with the mentality to do what I need to win the game.”

When the Chiefs beat the Vikings in 2019,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d6ab1d873cdf4e1782f8e4068c268b6d">Matt Moore was behind center</a>&nbsp;while Mahomes recovered from a dislocated kneecap. Though Mahomes has lost to Indianapolis in his only two regular-season matchups, he and the Chiefs beat the Colts in his first career start in the playoffs.

“Right now, we’re just all focused on trying to get things right,” coach Andy Reid said, "but it is an amazing stat for him for sure.”

The Chiefs are favored by 5½ points, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl">FanDuel Sportsbook</a>&nbsp;odds, but even with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vikings-analysis-week-4-023c61e8749da539158a2c0247735145">defense</a>&nbsp;that ranks just 21st in the league in passing yards allowed the Vikings might well be catching their opponent at the right time in what's sure to be a raucous U.S. Bank Stadium.

With a wide receiver group&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-f49ed853b34643c224235ba2d8adedd0">still trying to find its way</a>, Mahomes has thrown&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/patrick-mahomes-kansas-city-chiefs-4fe5e23231e2b9f198c4727b51e72b46">four interceptions over four games</a>&nbsp;and is only 15th in the NFL in passer rating (92.0).

“I have to put us in better positions and make better decisions so guys can go out there and make plays for me,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes isn't feared for his speed, but his ability to use his feet has still been a useful tool in Kansas City's offense. He showed that in last season’s playoffs, when his scramble set up the winning field goal against Cincinnati in the AFC championship game and again last week when a 25-yard run on third-and-22 kept alive the Chiefs’ final drive to seal a 23-20 victory over the Jets.

“He’s got a good feel for the coverage, who is dropping out of there and the time element that is involved with that,” Reid said, “and he’s smart when he does it in certain situations. He knows he can do it, and other times it’s not going to be available.”

The Chiefs hope to have linebacker Nick Bolton (ankle), who is responsible for setting the defense, and cornerback Jaylen Watson (shoulder) back from injuries this week. Bolton’s absence from the past two games has been noticeable, and missing Watson has minimized the depth in the secondary. The Chiefs could use their full complement of defensive backs to deal with Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson.

“It’s hard to stop him play after play,” safety Mike Edwards said. “If he gets a 5-yard catch, he can turn 5 yards into 60. We have to stop the explosive gains, and we’ll be good.”

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is apparently not too&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-chiefs-0c02652993a9a4da7762ed304dbff7f8">preoccupied with Taylor Swift</a>&nbsp;to mentor his young teammates. Wide receiver Rashee Rice singled out the All-Pro this week for helping him learn how to identify defenses, including ways to escape the line of scrimmage against man-to-man coverage and where the soft spots should be in zones.

“He’s always pulling me aside, during games, during practices," said Rice, a rookie from SMU who was drafted in the second round. "We get a lot of good looks out here.”

Vikings center Garrett Bradbury, one of only seven players remaining who played against the Chiefs in 2019, is on track to return from a back injury that knocked him out of the season opener. With guards Ezra Cleveland and Ed Ingram leaving room for improvement, the Vikings have also begun to work&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vikings-dalton-risner-cb21faa82319c43188fbc0ee3929d4ca">newcomer Dalton Risner</a>&nbsp;into the mix during practice. This would seem to be the right time for Risner to at least rotate in or take over as a starter.

“When you add a player like Dalton in-season, you want to give him an opportunity,” coach Kevin O'Connell said.

🏈 Vikings have never lost to Mahomes. Hint: They've never played against him

October 1-7 is an exciting time as 4-H families across the nation celebrate National 4-H Week. 

According to the National 4-H website, 4-H was established as Youth Clubs in 1902 with agricultural after-school clubs focused on particular ag products such as tomatoes or corn. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4-H. By 1914, 4-H Clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted. 

The Cooperative Extension System is a partnership of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the USDA, more than 100 land-grant universities and more than 3,000 county offices across the nation, including all 105 counties in Kansas. Cooperative Extension combines the expertise and resources of federal, state, and local governments to meet the need for research, knowledge, and educational programs. 

In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.

On September 26, I was joined by 4-H Ambassador Ailey Williams to address the Barton County Commission. 

We were delighted with Proclamation 2023-13 which states, in part, “4-H, as delivered by Cooperative Extension – a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people have taken on critical societal issues, such as addressing community health inequities, engaging in civil discourse, and advocating for equity and inclusion for all; and whereas, National 4-H Week showcases the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlights the remarkable 4-H youth in Kansas and throughout America who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Barton County, Kansas, that October 1-7, 2023 is hereby known as National 4-H Week throughout Barton County; and further, that the Commission recognizes the importance of using the Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, the four core values of the 4-H mission, to make the best better….”

Community service and citizenship are hallmarks of the 4-H program. "48 Hours of 4-H" is a state-wide service challenge. 

Cottonwood-Barton 4-H families will meet at the 4-H Educational Buildings on Sunday, Oct. 8 to clean up and work on a variety of projects. 

Previous projects have included cleanup at Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo and the making cookies for county-wide emergency service personnel. Many individual clubs will take on separate projects in their town. Teaching youth the value of giving back to their communities helps all communities be stronger and to develop the leaders needed to not just survive but to thrive.

 </figure>October 1-7 is an exciting time as 4-H families across the nation celebrate National 4-H Week. According to the National 4-H website, 4-H was established as Youth Clubs in 1902 with agricultural after-school clubs focused on particular ag products such as tomatoes or corn. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4-H. By 1914, 4-H Clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted. The Cooperative Extension System is a partnership of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the USDA, more than 100 land-grant universities and more than 3,000 county offices across the nation, including all 105 counties in Kansas. Cooperative Extension combines the expertise and resources of federal, state, and local governments to meet the need for research, knowledge, and educational programs. In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.On September 26, I was joined by 4-H Ambassador Ailey Williams to address the Barton County Commission. We were delighted with Proclamation 2023-13 which states, in part, “4-H, as delivered by Cooperative Extension – a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people have taken on critical societal issues, such as addressing community health inequities, engaging in civil discourse, and advocating for equity and inclusion for all; and whereas, National 4-H Week showcases the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlights the remarkable 4-H youth in Kansas and throughout America who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them. An American F-16 fighter aircraft shot down a Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle that had been observed conducting airstrikes in a U.S.-restricted operating zone about a kilometer from U.S. forces in Syria Thursday.

During a phone call between Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, the two leaders discussed the incident and agreed that while it is regrettable, the focus must remain on the important mission to defeat ISIS in Syria, said Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during a media briefing Thursday.

"The secretary reaffirmed that the United States remains in Syria exclusively in support of the campaign to defeat ISIS," Ryder said. "The secretary also acknowledged Turkey's legitimate security concerns and underscored the importance of close coordination between the United States and Turkey to prevent any risk to U.S. forces or the global coalition’s defeat-ISIS mission."&nbsp;

At around 7:30 a.m. local time, U.S. forces observed UAVs conducting airstrikes in the vicinity of Hasakah, Syria, Ryder said. Some of the strikes were inside a declared U.S.-restricted operating zone.

"At approximately 11:30 local time, a Turkish UAV reentered the ROZ on a heading toward where U.S. forces were located," Ryder said. "U.S. commanders assessed that the UAV, which was now less than a half a kilometer from U.S. forces, to be a potential threat, and U.S. F-16 fighters subsequently shot down the UAV in self-defense at approximately 11:40 local time."&nbsp;

No U.S. forces were injured, Ryder said, also adding there is no indication that Turkey had intentionally been targeting U.S. forces.&nbsp;

"It's a regrettable incident, but U.S. commanders on the ground did assess that there was a potential threat and so they took prudent action in this scenario," Ryder said. "But again, the secretary has talked to his counterpart. They had the opportunity to have a fruitful conversation and ... commit to one another that the U.S. and Turkey will continue to closely communicate and coordinate. And as I mentioned, Turkey does remain a very important and valuable&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nato.int/" target="_blank">NATO</a>&nbsp;ally and partner to the United States."&nbsp;

In addition to the phone call between Austin and Guler, newly sworn-in chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., also discussed the incident with his counterpart, Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Gen. Metin Gurak. Those two leaders discussed the U.S. and Turkey's shared objective of defeating ISIS and the importance of following common deconfliction protocols.

Focus remains on defeat of ISIS after U.S. shoots down drone over Syria

HOISINGTON — Margaret Ann Ney, 93, passed away on October 5, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born August 10, 1930, in Hoisington, the daughter of John E. and Margaret (Kultgen) Koeller. &nbsp;

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, in Hoisington. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella of Claflin.&nbsp;

Margaret Ann was married to Francis J. Ney on April 11, 1950. He preceded her in death on November 29, 2003. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Ney, daughter, Mary Lou Degenhardt, and a grandson, Shawn A. Ney, daughter-in-law, Debbie Ney; two brothers, John and William Koeller, a sister, Luella M. Crouch, brother-in-law, William M. Crouch, and a sister-in-law, Opal Koeller.

Margaret Ann worked as a retail clerk for Duckwalls &amp; Banner stores in Hoisington. She then went to work in 1989 for Anthony’s and later Stage Stores in Great Bend. She also sold Avon over her lifetime until October of 2019. 

Before and after her retirement she hosted bus trips to the casinos of Kansas with Cheyenne Travel and the Hoisington Recreation. &nbsp;Margaret Ann didn’t know a stranger for she was always looking to fill that next bus trip. 

Her smile and outgoing personality will live forever in the following survivors: sons, John F. Ney (Nicky) of Great Bend and Bob (Hope) Ney of Hoisington, son-in-law, Richard Degenhardt of Great Bend, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 12 to 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A vigil and rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Kansas, celebrated by Father Warren Stoecklein. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dick Butkus, a fearsome middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears, has died, the team announced Thursday. He was 80.

According to a statement released by the team, Butkus' family confirmed that he died in his sleep overnight at his home in Malibu, California.

Butkus was a Hall of Famer whose bone-rattling tackles made him one of the most intimidating players in NFL history. He was the quintessential modern linebacker, a disruptive force who roamed sideline to sideline and left a trail of broken opponents behind.

He was a first-team All-Pro selection five times and made the Pro Bowl in eight of his nine seasons before knee injuries forced his retirement at age 31. Despite a short career, Butkus came to define his position. He routinely ranks among the NFL’s top 100 players.

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services will not only be observing the annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. It will be. celebrating 40 years of service.

Options started as a grassroots movement in the 1970s. Women were opening their own homes to provide shelter to women who were victims of domestic violence, said Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director.

One of Options' current board members was one of those people in the '70s who was providing safe haven to victims.

"What happened with those early folks is that they realized a room or space on the couch provided immediate safety, but there were so many services people needed that they did not have the capacity to give," Hecker said.&nbsp;

Through local support, including the University Women at Fort Hays State University, the Northwest Kansas Family Shelter was founded.

The name of the agency has changed over the years. Today Options offers a shelter and community services in 18 northwest Kansas counties, including a satellite office in Colby and mobile services across its coverage area.

Options will have a variety of activities beginning Sept. 22 with a Hays Chamber Chat to honor its anniversary and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Below is a schedule of activities: • 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 - tree lighting ceremony at Goodland Regional Medical Center • 7 p.m. Oct. 3 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony at Fike Park in Colby • 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony at Russell Regional Hospital • 7 p.m. Oct. 6 -&nbsp;tree lighting ceremony followed by the 40th-anniversary celebration at Farmers Insurance, Chelsy Proehl-Kofoid Agency, 1012 Main, Hays • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 - Paint the Town Purple, art therapy event, Colby Community College Student Union • 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 -&nbsp; Paint the Town Purple, art therapy event, Union Pacific Park in Downtown Hays Oct. 19 - Wear Purple Day - Show your support for survivors of domestic violence by wearing purple

"Wear purple on Oct. 19 and stand in solidarity with victims who are still suffering in silence to really show there's a whole community of support out there for folks," Hecker said.

"Wear purple—purple hair, purple shirt, purple pants. Whatever you got, put it on."

Hecker said Options has five main programming elements—shelter, legal advocacy for victims, a rapid rehousing program, community support services and community advocacy. All services are free and confidential.

Options helps victims to navigate the criminal justice system if they choose to report crimes against them.

The goal of the rapid rehousing program is to get victims back into a home that is their own as soon as possible.

"Not everyone needs shelter, but they will still need services," she said of the community support program.&nbsp;

Some of the community awareness programs have included art displays, such as "Broken Brides" and "What Were You Wearing." "Broken Brides" is a display of products that a domestic violence victim might need like cream for cigarette burns.

"What Were You Wearing" is an exhibit that seeks to break the myth what victims were wearing contributed to their sexual assaults. It includes recreations and, in some instances, the exact clothing victims were wearing when they were assaulted.

Options also provides training for bar staff through the Safe Bar Alliance program. Employees learn to recognize signs of sexual predators and ways to keep customers safe.

I think the pandemic ripped the band-aid off of America's dirty little secret," she said.
