United Way of Ellis County proudly announces its 2025 partner agencies, reinforcing its commitment to fostering positive change and strengthening the local community. 

Through strategic collaborations with nonprofit organizations, United Way of Ellis County continues to drive impactful initiatives that address critical needs in the areas of youth opportunity, healthy community, financial security, and community resiliency. 

“United Way is honored to partner with these outstanding agencies that share our vision for a stronger, healthier, and more equitable community,” said Erica Berges, executive director of United Way of Ellis County. “Together, we can make a real difference by supporting programs that uplift individuals and families in need.” 

The CARE Council, which is made up of 12 community volunteers, reviews the applications to determine funding for the United Way of Ellis County, City of Hays social service funds and alcohol tax funds, Ellis County outside funding, and Ellis County alcohol tax funds. 

This year, the CARE Council determined $280,000 worth of United Way funding. 

The 2025 United Way of Ellis County partner agencies include:

The <a href="https://heartlandcommunityfoundation.org/">Heartland Community Foundation</a>, dedicated to supporting Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties, is excited to announce the opening of its spring grant cycle. As of March 15, applications can be submitted online until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Approximately $150,000 in funding is available in this grant cycle.

To assist applicants in their efforts, the community foundation is offering three FREE grant writing workshops and lunches. To RSVP for the training, called 10 Tips for Better Grant Writing, email heartland@gscf.org. 

· Ellis County: April 10, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Ellis County Historical Society, 100 W. 7th St., in Hays

· Trego County: April 10, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the HCF office/Pfanennstiel Law, 110 N. Main St., in WaKeeney

· Rooks County: April 15, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Plainville Memorial Library, 200 1st St., in Plainville

This grant cycle aims to support local initiatives that fulfill one or more of the following goals:

· Directly benefiting communities in Ellis, Rooks, or Trego counties.

· Enhancing the quality of life for individuals and expanding the capacity or outreach of applying organizations through programs, projects, or capital improvements.

· Providing seed funding to kickstart new projects, programs, or organizations that will serve the community.

Funding is made possible by the Legacy Funds of Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties, along with contributions from the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, the Heartland Healthy Living Fund, Heartland Area Action Fund, Kansas Health Foundation Fund for Heartland Community, and the Stockton Community Fund.

– The TMP-Marian track and field team opened their 2025 season on a chilly
afternoon at the Russell Invitational. The girls finished fourth and the
boys ninth. 

Hoxie won the girls meet with Russell second, Ellis third and
Plainville sixth. Hutchinson Trinity Catholic won the boys meet with Hoxie
second, Plainville fourth and Ellis eighth.

The
Monarchs had three first place finishes. Piper Simpson won the girls pole vault
(9-0), they won the girls 4x100 relay (54.72) and Jackson Gillespie won the boys
200 (23.53). Gillespie finished second in the 100. 

The
Ellis girls won five events. Evelyn Merriman the 200 (26.86), Avery Boydston the
1600 (5:35.98) and 3200 (12:18.90) and Natalie North the discus (130-6) and the
shot put (38-11.5).

Plainville’s
Tucker Rudman finished first in the boys shot put (46-9).

🏃‍♀️ Monarch girls 4th, boys 9th at Russell Invite

SYLVAN
GROVE – The TMP-Marian softball team moved to 6-0 Thursday with a pair of
run-rule wins over Sylvan Lucas. The Monarchs scored seven in the sixth and won
the opener 14-0. They used a 10-run third for a 16-3, five inning win in game two.


The
Monarchs are in Hoisington Friday for a doubleheader with the Cardinals.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 14, Sylvan Lucas 0 (6 inn.)
 Brynn Rebel allowed only one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks. She allowed
only three base runners in the game with walks in the third and sixth and a
single in the fourth.

The
Monarchs scored two with two outs in the first on a Teagan Gottschalk single to
center. They would add three in the third an a Gottschalk single to left which
plated one and two more on an error. Rebel tripled in the fourth and scored on
a passed ball. They would tack on another run on an error to push the lead to 7-0.
TMP blew the game open with seven in the sixth. Bria Windholz had an RBI triple
and Rebel a three-run double to highlight the big inning.

Brynn
Rebel and Teagan Gottschalk both drove in three runs. Rebel had three of the
Monarchs 12 hits.



Game 2: TMP-Marian 16, Sylvan Lucas 3 (5 inn.)
 The Monarchs trailed 2-1 after the first inning but took the lead in the second
in a two-out, two run single from Brooke Koeningsman. They blew the game open
with 10 in the third. The Monarchs sent 14 to plate in the big frame which was
capped by a Teagan Gottschalk two-run homer.

Gottschalk
and Brooke Koeningsman both drove in four runs. Koeningsman, Brynn Rebel and
Nicole Schumacher all had three of TMP’s 17 hits.

Bria

🥎 TMP-Marian cruises to sweep of Mustangs

WINGATE, N.C. - The Fort Hays State baseball team moved into the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Poll for the first time this season on Wednesday, with the Tigers sitting in 22nd this week.

The Tigers were receiving votes in the poll last week. Fort Hays State picked up 87 points in the balloting process, seven points behind 20th-ranked East Stroudsburg.

The MIAA has one other team in the poll and one team that is receiving votes, with Central Missouri ranked No. 2 in the country and Central Oklahoma receiving votes.

The Tigers will take a break from conference play on Sunday when FHSU hosts Colorado-Colorado Springs in a doubleheader starting at noon.

A former Thomas More Prep-Marian employee has been arrested on a requested  charge of theft from the school.

Joseph Arnold Roth, 31, of Hays, was arrested on Feb. 25 for allegedly transferring $19,153 from a TMP account into his personal account on or about Feb. 5, according to court records.

The crime is listed in court records as a level 9 nonperson felony.

Roth entered a not guilty plea on March 10.

Roth is set for a first appearance in Ellis County District court in front of Judge Richard Flax at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 8.

The Hays Post contacted TMP Principal Chad Meitner, and he said the school had no comment on the case at this time.

The Ellis County real estate valuations increased in 2025, according to a report given by the Ellis County Appraiser to the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday.

Ellis County Appraiser Eugene Rupp said the county's median property valuation increased by 3% overall in 2025. Agricultural use decreased by 4.4%, residential values increased by 3%, and commercial and industrial values increased by 2.7%.

The overall median value from 2024 was up 4.7%. Rupp said the market is slowing down in 2025.

Hays increased by 3%, Ellis increased by 6%, Victoria by 6%, Schoenchen by 6% and Catharine by 9.4%.

The total final value in Ellis County for 2025 is $3,780,355,500. It was $3,644,458,000 in 2024.&nbsp;

Rupp said the percentage of exempt properties, which include churches, schools and hospitals, changed from 16.7% to 17.21% between 2024 and 2025.

Each year, a commission meeting is scheduled for a tour led by Public Works staff, during which commissioners visit various road and bridge sites throughout Ellis County.

These include projects that have been completed, are underway, are listed in the capital improvement plan, or have been newly identified by staff and the commission for review.

Commissioners spoke with Public Works Director Brendan Mackay about plans for the April 30 tour and discussed additional sites that could be included.

Locations mentioned included the 10th Street bridge in Ellis, the Catharine Road project, Vineyard Road and 270th Street, Reservation Road, and the Leiker Addition on 280th Street.

The commissioners approved the supply of labor and equipment to support the city of Ellis' 2025 chip seal project. The city lacks the resources to complete the work independently.

The city of Ellis will be responsible for material costs, while the county will provide labor, equipment and some materials for work on Washington Street.

The commission heard from Katelyn Schmidt, a Roosevelt Elementary fifth-grade teacher, about the school's role in the&nbsp;<a href="https://yacenter.org/young-ameritowne/">AmeriTowne program</a>.

Schmidt discussed the project-based learning program, which concludes with a field trip where students participate in hands-on, real-world experiences.

She hopes to encourage other schools to adopt the program and attract more community volunteers.

• Approved the purchase and installation of a public safety radio booster in the Administrative Center's basement. Due to the concrete structure, radio signals are inaccessible, creating a significant communication issue for public safety personnel.

• Approved the 2026 budget schedule for 2025. The next step in the budget process is for the commission to prepare to give budget directions to department heads, elected officials and outside agencies at the April 15 commission meeting.

• Received an update on the Local Workforce Development Areas One and Two merger. The merger aims to expand effective practices and improve services for job seekers and employers.

• Approved the motion to officially vacate the county's right-of-way for a portion of St. Jacobs Street in Catharine.

Ellis County real estate assessed values up overall in 2025

A former Ellis County Attorney issued a public apology for his office's budget overrun by more than $72,000 in the final year of his term.

Former Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson told the Ellis County Commission Tuesday that budget overage stemmed from multiple factors, including hiring Joshua Becker as a fifth attorney.

Anderson said he expected attorney James Rutherford to leave by October, but Rutherford stayed through January.&nbsp;Both attorneys remained on staff, which caused overlapping budget costs.

Ellis County Administrator Darin Myers said the 2024 fiscal budget was $1,066,725, with Anderson exceeding it by $72,400.

"If I can go back in time, my preference would have been to come to the commission and ask for that budget authority," Anderson said. "I would have never deliberately or purposely spent money we didn't have. That is my apology."

Anderson said he is handling about a dozen cases at no cost as a special prosecutor as an act of restitution.

County commissioners responded to Anderson with appreciation and understanding, commending his efforts to maintain staffing in the attorney’s office during his transition out of the role.

"It takes a real person to come and apologize," Commissioner Neal Younger said.

Anderson did not run for re-election for county attorney.&nbsp;

Aaron Cunningham ran unopposed for the position in 2024 and assumed the office in January.

I attended your so-called “Town Hall” in Oakley on March 1, and I had every reason to believe it would be a genuine meeting—a discussion with Kansans, with open questions and follow-ups. Instead, your insistence on pre-written, selectively chosen questions made it clear that you were steering the conversation to avoid real accountability.

Your misquotation of President Eisenhower was particularly insulting. Not only was it fabricated, but it also served as an attempt to silence us under the guise of his authority. Your dismissive suggestion that this event was only for “Oakley folk” was yet another slap in the face. My wife’s family—11 kids—were raised at 512 Freeman in Oakley. 

I was raised in Hays, regularly practice law in Logan County, and have lifelong ties to the region. I sat with my wife, her brother, and a cousin, all from the area at the event. The crowd was full of Western Kansans, as well as others who cared enough to drive from across the state and stay overnight in local motels.

Your treatment of your own constituents was nothing short of rude and condescending. Your refusal to answer real questions, particularly about your unwavering loyalty to Donald Trump, made it clear that this was never intended to be a true town hall. It was a staged media opportunity for you. When it backfired, and Mr. Dunn gently called you out for supporting the unnecessary firing of thousands of veterans, you cut and ran.

Now, to the purpose of this letter: I demand an apology for the slander and libel you committed after the event. You falsely accused us of being “paid troublemakers” and “not real Kansans.” You ratified Trump’s smear of us, slandering me, my wife, our family, and every other person in that room—about 150 Kansans who showed up in good faith.

While Trump may be immune from accountability for his wrongful actions, you are not. I expect you to issue an apology with at least as much visibility as your original defamatory statements.

Since March 1, I have been looking for an opportunity to deliver this letter in person, but you have been avoiding public appearances. Your phones are set to screen out real Kansans, and you lack a&nbsp;residence in the state where this letter could be delivered. You fled Oakley that morning at 9:37 a.m., and you’ve been dodging accountability ever since.

I will keep trying to reach you. In the meantime, I have pledged to raise at least $100,000 in modest donations from real Kansans to support a candidate who actually represents us and will replace you in the U.S. Senate.

HAYS, Kan. – Due to weather forecasted for the Hays area on Friday and Saturday, Fort Hays State Softball is pushing its MIAA doubleheaders with Northeastern State and Rogers State to Sunday and Monday. Original start times against both opponents remain the same as FHSU will face NSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. and then RSU on Monday at 12 p.m.

🎾 Tigers fall to No. 11 Washburn

LaVon McGinnis, 87, Hays, died Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Via
Christi Village.

She was born July 27, 1937 in Hays, the daughter of Paul and
Catherine (Schlyer) Schumacher.&nbsp; In 1955,
LaVon graduated from Girls Catholic High School, and on September 1, 1958, she
was united in marriage to Donald E. “Don” McGinnis in Hays.&nbsp; Don and LaVon loved dancing together at
weddings and celebrated 55 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on
April 8, 2014.&nbsp; She worked at Baxter
Travenol, Hays International Mailing, Schumacher Shoe Store, and was a bus
monitor for the USD 489 Head Start program.&nbsp;
LaVon was a woman of deep faith and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary
Catholic Church where she was a minister of Holy Communion at mass and to the
homebound, and with Don, taught CCD classes.&nbsp;


LaVon enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crocheting, tending to her
flower and vegetable gardens, canning produce, and crafting her own beef jerky
recipe.&nbsp; Most of all, she was a loving
homemaker and a great cook, making delicious meals with tasty desserts for her
family.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include her three sons, Chuck McGinnis of Hays,
Mike McGinnis and wife Carol of San Marcos, California, and Tony McGinnis of
Wichita, four daughters, Pat Hammerschmidt of Hays, Myrna McGinnis and partner Loretta
Fletcher of Wichita, Kathy McGinnis &nbsp;and
partner J.J. Legleiter of Hays, and Barb Herrman and husband Troy of
Hutchinson, seven grandchildren, Allie Nicholson and husband Andrew, Kirstin
Benedict, Blake McGinnis, Ryan Hammerschmidt, Brandon Herrman, Shayde McGinnis,
and Tobyn McGinnis, and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law Bob
Hammerschmidt, and one sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday,
April 8, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Brian
McCaffrey officiating.&nbsp; Burial will
follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp;
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am
until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A parish vigil service and rosary will be at
6:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Tennis claimed the MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor for the second-straight week on Wednesday. Irina Alfonso&nbsp;is this week's honoree after teammate Suzana Faucz&nbsp;received the honor last week. Alfonso had a huge week for the Tigers, knocking off a nationally ranked player in MIAA action and then provided the clinching point in FHSU's 4-3 win over Missouri Western for the team's first MIAA win since 2018.

Alfonso&nbsp;went 6-0 for the week in singles and doubles combined. In the win over Missouri Western, she outlasted Johanna Priedite in a match that took nearly three hours to complete. With the score knotted at 3-3 between the teams, Alfonso forced a third set and won the match by scores of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, ending a 47-match losing string for the Tigers in conference play.

Just a day before, despite FHSU losing to Northwest Missouri 5-2, Alfonso won both her singles and doubles matches against the Bearcats, upsetting No. 57 nationally ranked Alva Norberg in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. In the Tigers 5-1 non-conference win over William Jewell, Alfonso blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to cap off a perfect week, helping the Fort Hays move to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA.

Alfonso partnered with Faucz at No. 2 doubles to win all three matches for the week. The duo won a tiebreaker against the Bearcats 7-6 (8-6), won 6-4 against the Griffons, and then 6-1 against William Jewell. Alfonso is now 15-4 in singles play and 17-2 in doubles play this season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - Due to this weekend's weather forecast, the 26th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team has announced a change to its non-conference schedule against Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Originally scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday and one game on Sunday, the Tigers and Mountain Lions will now only play two games on Sunday beginning at noon at Larks Park.

A week after going 1-2 on the road against third-ranked Central Missouri, the Tigers head into the weekend ranked 26th in the latest ABCA Coaches Poll, 22nd in the most recent&nbsp;NCBWA&nbsp;National Poll and 25th in the updated D2Baseball Poll.

Fort Hays State improved to 22-8 overall and 17-4 in MIAA play with a thrilling 4-1 win over Washburn on Tuesday (April 1), while the Mountain Lions head to Hays with an overall record of 18-13 and a mark of 8-8 in RMAC contests.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Fort Hays State and UCCS in baseball. Former RMAC rivals in other sports, the Mountain Lions did not add baseball as an intercollegiate sport until 2017.

⚾ Tigers Alter weekend schedule

Crystal Ann “Chris” Trauer age 86 of Hays, Kansas died March
31, 2025. &nbsp;She was born August 7, 1938, in Pueblo, Colorado to Lyle and
Evelyn (Weight) Scott.

She married Robert Dennis in Pueblo, CO and had three children, Lauree, Steve,
and Mike.&nbsp; She grew up in Pueblo, CO and was a 1956 graduate of Central
High School.&nbsp; While living in Colorado Chris worked at Woolworths in
Denver and in 1972, they moved to Ellis, KS as her husband worked on the
railroad. She and Robert later separated.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

While living in Ellis she met Duane Trauer when she worked at the 11th Frame
Club, and&nbsp;they later
married on March 26, 1977, in Palco, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on
January 20, 2011.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

She and Duane started Trauer Insurance Agency in the basement of their house in
1977, and later moved the business to Northridge Plaza, and happily serving
numerous customers throughout Western KS in the crop/hail insurance industry.&nbsp;
They sold the agency in 2001, and Duane continued to work until 2011, and Chris
worked there until 2012.&nbsp; She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, and a Life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post # 9076 both of
Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

&nbsp;Chris had a passion for bowling and attended several state bowling
tournaments, loved gardening, traveling to Alaska to see her kids and
grandkids, and traveling with friends on cruises, trips to Hawaii, and other
places in the US, and spending time with her grand dog “Emmy”,

Crystal is survived by her children, Lauree Honas and husband, Jim, Ellis, KS;
Mike Dennis and wife, Jane, Big Lake, AK; Terri Cox, Pearisburg, VA; Tammi
Strutt and husband, Darvin, Colby, KS; her daughter-in-law, Audra Dennis, Hawaii;
her grandchildren, Eric Wedermyer; Amanda Wedermyer; Ryan Gross; Sarah Cummings
(Justin); Daniella Peterson (Kevin); Ryan Honas; Jessica Alocoer (Jose); Brain
Trauer; Tyler Trauer (Kayla); Dana Cox (Laura); Kirstie Wojtech (John); Trevor
Strutt (Amanda); her great grandchildren, Madison and Hailey Wedermyer; JuJaun
Lucas, and Lyric Gross; Caden, Brynlee, and Layton Peterson; Haven Wojtech;
Harper and Holton Trauer; Benson and Kami Trauer; and Shaylee Benoit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Evelyn Scott; her husband
Duane Trauer; her sons, Steve Dennis; Mark Trauer; and Gregg Trauer.

Chris will be missed dearly by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to
know her.

Though she
is no longer with us, the memories of her energetic spirit will live on in the
hearts of all the lives she touched.

A Celebration of Life Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 4, 2025, at
Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays with Chaplain, Chad Pritchett
officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas,

Community Baby Shower in Hays Saturday celebrates new, expecting parents

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Ellis County Rural Water District #1C public water supply system located in Ellis County. 

The City of Hays is not affected by this advisory.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking&nbsp;or food preparation or use bottled water.&nbsp;

• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.&nbsp;

• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.&nbsp;

• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.&nbsp;

• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The advisory took effect on&nbsp;April 2,&nbsp;2025&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

KDHE&nbsp;officials issued the advisory because of&nbsp;of a&nbsp;waterline&nbsp;leak&nbsp;resulting in a loss of pressure in the&nbsp;distribution&nbsp;system.  Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

McPHERSON - The Hays High boys tennis team finished fifth at the McPherson Invitational Tuesday.
