After 34 years of protecting highways and helping save lives, Kansas Highway Patrol Captain Travis Phillips turned in his badge Thursday.

"I don't know any other career in the world that gives a person the power to make a difference in somebody's life, no matter how significant or insignificant that might be," Phillips said.

Phillips was born in Nebraska but raised in Ellis, where he graduated from Ellis High School in 1986. He later earned a criminal justice degree from Fort Hays State University in 1994.

Phillips said he was inspired by a trooper who visited his school regularly as a child and later by KHP&nbsp;Trooper Kennith McGlasson, whom he often saw during his high school years.

"I would see him at Ellis once in a while at fuel stops. When I saw his blue and gray patrol car parked at the convenience store, I'd always stop and fuel my pickup just for a chance to talk to him," Phillips said. "He always gave me the time of day, and it planted a seed with me."

He began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Hays Police Department&nbsp;before quickly making his way to the KHP in 1994. Phillips rose through the ranks of the KHP, serving as sergeant, master trooper, lieutenant and eventually captain six years ago.

"If you care and you show up, you're going to be successful in law enforcement," he said.&nbsp;

Throughout his career, Phillips faced several defining moments, including being pinned down by a gunman in Wallace County, stopping a wrong-way felon with a tactical vehicle maneuver and rescuing dozens of people during dust storms and blizzards.

Most recently, he was honored for his response to a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8ca4c0a7-0dc0-4dd3-8b6e-833e1efc6754">major multi-vehicle crash on March 13 on Interstate 70 in Sherman County</a>.

Phillips has saved lives in dangerous situations and supported former offenders he once had to remove from the streets.

"Sometimes you get a call from somebody that you arrested for DUI and they thank you for how you treated them, for helping them get sober," he said.

Phillips said one of the most significant challenges in his law enforcement career is maintaining morale in the face of national scrutiny. However, he recognizes the strong support he has received from the local community.

Phillips said support from organizations like the <a href="https://www.1033foundation.org/">10-33 Foundation</a>, a nonprofit offering mental health crisis intervention for first responders and their families, helped sustain him throughout his career up to his decision to retire.

"We all carry a [hypothetical] backpack out here, and every once in a while, your backpack gets full, and that's why we have peer support and mental health services available to help unpack our backpack," he said.

Phillips hopes to remain in law enforcement in a smaller and community-focused role. He is the father of two daughters and grandfather to three.

Phillips said he is grateful to his wife, who often left meals in the microwave when Phillips could not make it home for dinner, and to the fellow troopers he served alongside throughout his career.

"I got a blood family and I got a blue family," he said. "I want to thank my blue family for doing the job. Make me proud."

Phillips advises new troopers joining the force to prioritize faith, family and their work in that order.

United States Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) makes an appearance at Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph.

“I’m a lifelong Chiefs fan. I remember Super Bowl I. I remember Super Bowl IV,” Marshall tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “And just a boyhood dream to come to camp some day and here it is, so excited to see everybody.”

Marshall, a Republican, says he is pleased with the start of President Trump’s second term.

“Well, I think that we’ve never seen such a successful first six months of a presidency. That we’ve secured the border. That we’ve rolled back regulation. That the price of gas and groceries are coming down. Job market looks good,” according to Marshall. “Trillions of dollars are going to be invested here in the next several years as well to grow those jobs even more. Very proud of our big, beautiful bill.”

Marshall says he is pleased to see President Trump move to shore up trade agreements with major trading partners, such as the United Kingdom and the European Union.

“EU is probably our second biggest trade partner, overall, right now. And, basically, they’ve locked us out for years. So, we’re unable to sell Kansas agriculture products, Kansas ethanol in EU right now,” Marshall says. “So, we’re going to break down those non-tariff barriers and it will be good for the world economy overall.”

He says a move to reach agreements in southeast Asia could have a big impact.

“By getting agreements done with Indonesia, which is the 4th largest country in the world right now,” Marshall says. “Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines. So, we’re kind of making a box around China and going to force them to the table as well.”

Marshall says agriculture will benefit from the recent agreements, though another industry will benefit a bit more.

“I think agriculture will have a significant benefit, because it’s going from zero to something; probably a $25 billion trade deficit with the EU right now as well. But there are bigger markets out there for our food as well,” Marshall says. “Probably the cars is the big issue with the EU. We buy so many of their cars, but they block our cars from going in there. The president removing tariffs going into the EU is really going to open up that market.”

Sen. Marshall stops by Chiefs Training Camp, talks trade deals

In her second term as governor and final 18 months in public office, Gov. Laura Kelly has elevated water in Kansas to her highest priority, her "North Star."

"All the other issues are important as well," she said in an interview with Hays Post, "but if we don't do something about water, none of that will matter in the long run."

Some areas of western Kansas dependent on the Ogallala Aquifer have <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/bf6fe01e-4e25-4800-baa9-da74384387eb">fewer than 25 years of usable water left</a>, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

More than 150 communities are at or above the acceptable nitrate levels in their drinking water.

In the past legislative session, Kelly signed a bipartisan bill creating the Water Program Task Force. A <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/7d27068a-02af-4a1e-b0bb-825c4ca501ab">ceremonial signing of House Bill 2172 was in Hays </a>on July 9 in recognition of the city's long-time leadership in water conservation programs and practices.

The new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnipVdorz2Y">task force met for the first time</a>&nbsp;on July 21 in Topeka. It is charged with developing a long-term sustainable strategy for dealing with water that also includes a dedicated funding source.

Kelly plans to spend her political capital to tackle a politically charged issue.

"This is certainly not the first time we've talked about water in Kansas," she said. "There have been many other sophisticated, thoughtful water plans put into place over the years by previous administrations. 

"But none of them really got implemented in a long-term way that makes a consistent difference. Part of that is because it is so incredibly controversial in many ways. ... You've got different sides of the state with different water issues that need different kinds of solutions and interventions. And there are so many stakeholders."

There are approximately 20 state entities involved in water regulations. That's too many, Kelly said.&nbsp;

"It's going to be painful for some people. It will be political, and it will be controversial. But it's absolutely essential we have those conversations and make those decisions going forward," she said.

The governor, who is not a member of the task force, wants to see a more efficient and streamlined process of dealing with water management in Kansas.

She likens the idea to the state's comprehensive highway program created almost 40 years ago.

"Just like roads and bridges, water is not something you can fund on a year-in and year-out basis. It's got to be a long-term guaranteed funding structure so that projects that overlap a budget year can be funded and carried through," Kelly said.

It is up to the task force to research funding possibilities, she said, and then to come up with recommendations to present to the legislature.

Members of the task force include area state representatives Rep. Jim Minnix, R-Scott City, and Ken Rahjes, R-Agra. Minnix is a co-chair along with&nbsp;Sen. Kenny Titus, R-Wamego.

Last week's inaugural meeting agenda was intentionally broad in scope with an overview of water management, funding and planning in Kansas. The presentations then focused on evaluating future and current risks to groundwater and surface water quantity.&nbsp;

"I'm encouraged by the progress that we've made and what is to come,"&nbsp;Kelly said.&nbsp;"Now is the time to follow through and deliver a safe and resilient water supply for the generations of Kansans to come."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Future of water is Kansas governor's 'North Star'

Investigators probing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dc-crash-investigation-american-airlines-helicopter-ntsb-b78bce07efa055aa6f9c04e580ffe24e">the January midair collision</a>&nbsp;of a passenger plane and an Army helicopter over Washington that killed 67 people found the chopper was flying higher than the it should have been and the altitude readings were inaccurate.

The details came out of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dc-plane-crash-investigation-ntsb-faa-36d4d06b3b29243a1eb8c00819222ce8">first day of National Transportation Safety Board hearings</a>&nbsp;in Washington, where investigators aim to uncover insights into what caused the crash between the American Airlines plane from Wichita, Kansas, and the Black Hawk helicopter over Ronald Reagan National Airport.

The board opened the three days of hearings by showing an animation and playing audio and video from the night of the collision, as well as questioning witnesses and investigators about how the Federal Aviation Administration and the Army may have contributed to nation's deadlines plane crash since November 2001.

It's likely too early for the board to identify what caused the crash.

The January incident was the first in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/air-india-crash-aviation-safety-76215f9d429274f3b5089e81baa97d6a">string of crashes</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/airline-flight-military-bomber-north-dakota-d4fb212c7875e89b2e9c7ec29709d74d">near misses</a>&nbsp;this year that have alarmed officials and the traveling public, despite statistics that still show flying remains the safest form of transportation.

The hearing opened Wednesday with a video animation showing where the helicopter and airliner were leading up to the collision. It showed how the helicopter flew above the 200 feet (61 meters) altitude limit on the helicopter route along the Potomac River before colliding with the plane.

Investigators said Wednesday the flight data recorder showed the helicopter was actually 80 feet to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters) higher than the barometric altimeter the pilots relied upon showed they were flying. So the NTSB conducted tests on three other helicopters from the same unit in a flight over the same area and found similar discrepancies in their altimeters.

Dan Cooper with Sikorsky helicopters said that when the Black Hawk helicopter involved in the crash was designed in the 1970s, it used a style of altimeter that was common at the time. Newer helicopters have air data computers that didn’t exist back then that help provide more accurate altitude readings.

Chief Warrant Officer Kylene Lewis told the board that she wouldn’t find an 80 to 100 foot discrepancy between the different altimeters on a helicopter alarming because at lower altitudes she would be relying more on the radar altimeter than the barometric altimeter. Below 500 feet (152 meters) , Lewis said she would be checking both instruments and cross referencing them.

She said as long as an altimeter registers an altitude within 70 feet of the published altitude before takeoff the altimeter is considered accurate under the checklists.

But previously, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy highlighted that the published helicopter routes around Washington D.C. would allow planes and helicopters to routinely come within 75 feet of each other during landing.

Army officials said Wednesday that the flight manual for these older Black Hawks doesn’t highlight the discrepancies in altimeters that has been documented previously, but typical flight separations are at least 500 feet around airports.

Previously disclosed air traffic control audio had the helicopter pilot telling the controller twice that they saw the airplane and would avoid it. The animation ended with surveillance video showing the helicopter colliding with the plane in a fiery crash.

Aviation attorney Bob Clifford, who is working to file one of the first lawsuits against the government next month, said he hopes NTSB will look beyond the immediate factors that caused this crash to highlight the bigger ongoing concerns in the crowded Washington airspace.

Even though the final NTSB report won't be released until sometime next year, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz isn't waiting to propose changes. He introduced legislation Tuesday that would require all aircraft operators to use both forms of ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, the technology to broadcast aircraft location data to other planes and air traffic controllers. Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B Out equipment but the airlines would have to add the more comprehensive ADS-B In technology to their planes.

“There cannot be a double standard in aviation safety,” Cruz said. “We should not tolerate special exceptions for military training flights, operating in congested air space.”

The legislation would revoke an exemption on ADS-B transmission requests for Department of Defense aircrafts. It also would require the FAA to evaluate helicopter routes near airports and require the Army Inspector General to review the Army’s aviation safety practices.

Homendy said her agency has been recommending that move for decades after several other crashes.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that while he’d like to discuss “a few tweaks,” the legislation is “the right approach.” He also suggested that the previous administration “was asleep at the wheel” amid dozens of near-misses in the airspace around Washington's airspace.

Homendy said the hearings over the next few days will be a “fact-finding proceeding.” The NTSB will also post thousands of pages of evidence from the crash investigation online.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said that he expects “we’re going to have some very uncomfortable conversations over the next two and a half days” but that “they need to be had in the clear light of day – and simply put the best interest of the traveling public ahead of any of our personal interests, perhaps.”

It showed how the helicopter flew above the 200 feet (61 meters) altitude limit on the helicopter route along the Potomac River before colliding with the plane.Investigators said Wednesday the flight data recorder showed the helicopter was actually 80 feet to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters) higher than the barometric altimeter the pilots relied upon showed they were flying. So the NTSB conducted tests on three other helicopters from the same unit in a flight over the same area and found similar discrepancies in their altimeters.Dan Cooper with Sikorsky helicopters said that when the Black Hawk helicopter involved in the crash was designed in the 1970s, it used a style of altimeter that was common at the time. Newer helicopters have air data computers that didn’t exist back then that help provide more accurate altitude readings.Chief Warrant Officer Kylene Lewis told the board that she wouldn’t find an 80 to 100 foot discrepancy between the different altimeters on a helicopter alarming because at lower altitudes she would be relying more on the radar altimeter than the barometric altimeter. NTSB reveals new details in fatal midair crash with passenger jet from Kansas

That is the decision before the Kansas City Chiefs as executives with the Chiefs consider proposals from both Missouri and Kansas to offset the cost of either renovating Arrowhead Stadium or building a new stadium.

Chiefs CEO, Clark Hunt, says the team has made a lot of progress evaluating two really good options.

“I don't want to get into how close we are making a decision, because I've found over time with stadium situations, that until they're done, they're not done,” Hunt tells reporters during his visit to Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph. “There's a lot of work, a lot of moving parts, and we're working through those. Certainly, I would say we feel an urgency to bringing the process to a conclusion. But that doesn't mean I can will it to happen in any specified period of time.”

Hunt calls the two offers from the two states two very good options.

Hunt says the Kansas offer would provide financing needed to build a new stadium.

“And our priority on the Missouri side has been a renovation of GEHA Field at Arrowhead,” Hunt says. “So, those are the two primary options.”

Hunt acknowledges there is an emotional pull toward Arrowhead.

“I think anybody who’s been coming to Chiefs games for decades understands what a special stadium GEHA Field at Arrowhead is,” Hunt says. “And you know, it's fun being here at training camp and getting to interact with our fans. And I certainly hear from them in terms of their thoughts. And many of them have grown up going to games with their dad, their mother, their family, and so it's a very special place for them. So that'll be part of the calculus for sure.”

Hunt says the team has a sense of urgency, because the Arrowhead lease expires in the Spring of 2031 and it takes 4 ½ to 5 years to complete a stadium project.

“So, it's important for us to be able to make a decision somewhat in the in the near term to be able to be on schedule to have the renovated or new building open in ’31.”

Still, Hunt says the Chiefs must make a decision that is best for the team’s fans and the organization’s future. Hunt says the team is intent on getting it right.

NORMAN, Okla. - The Fort Hays State men's golf team had four individuals named 2024-25 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars, announced Tuesday (July 29) by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Jacob George, Parker Krob, Cooper Scheck and Cole Streck all received the honor this season. FHSU's four honorees were the most in the MIAA and tied for fourth in all Division II behind only Georgia Southwestern, Lander and Saint Leo who had five selections each.

To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. Cooper Scheck led the squad with a stroke average of 72.15 across 33 rounds of competition, earning PING All-Central Region honors in addition to picking up his second All-MIAA honor. The junior won the Newman Invitational and turned in six top-10 finishes while finishing at-or-under par in six of his 12 tournaments. Scheck fired 11 sub-par rounds, including a 7-under 64 in the first round of the Hillcat Classic. He continues to maintain a perfect 4.00 GPA as a health and human performance major emphasizing in sport and exercise therapy. He was a second team CSC Academic All-America At-Large selection in addition to earning CSC Academic All-District status for a second time while also earning the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the MIAA Academic Excellence Award and a spot on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Cole Streck finished up his career as a Tiger as an All-MIAA selection after turning in a stroke average of 73.9 across 30 events. He tied for second on the team with seven rounds at-or-under par, including a 4-under 67 at the Hillcat Classic. Streck graduated this spring with a degree in finance, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.29. The Great Bend, Kan. native picked up his second MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition this season.

A total of 15 MIAA student-athletes received the honor, including three from Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma and Rogers State and two from Northeastern State.

⛳Four FHSU Men's Golfers Collect All-America Scholar Status

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman involved in an altercation with a Kansas sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop is going to prison.

On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Magana sentenced 22-year-old Nevaeh Thompson of Wichita, to 45 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. She will also serve 36 months of post-release supervision. In May, Thompson pleaded guilty to aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. March 2, a Sedgwick County Deputy conducted a traffic stop near Lincoln and Rock Road.&nbsp; The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Thompson. During the stop, Thompson informed the deputy that she might have outstanding warrants for her arrest. Before she could be taken into custody, Thompson quickly jumped back into her vehicle in an attempt to flee.

The deputy followed her into the vehicle, trying to prevent her escape. However, Thompson managed to shift the car into drive and sped away, dragging the deputy a short distance.

The deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident. Thompson’s vehicle was later found abandoned in the 7300 block of E. Indianapolis. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence shows Thompson running from the vehicle.&nbsp; Thompson was arrested five days after the incident.

If you think you want to leave your business anytime soon, you need to start now, according to an economic specialist.

Michael Aumack,&nbsp;economic specialist and public information officer with the U.S. Small Business Administration Wichita District, spoke at a Chamber in Hays luncheon on Friday.

He said it might take years for a business owner to develop a succession plan.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6b771370-52d1-4f43-ae23-a9eab000691f">More than half of business owners are 55 years or older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey. The youngest Baby Boomers are set to reach retirement age in 2030.</a>

Aumack echoed in his talk on Friday the importance of succession planning during a time when many business owners are aging and looking toward retirement.

&nbsp;"Succession, think of it as keeping your success rolling," Aumack said.

"Your entity, your business, is always growing, and the world is always changing," he said. ... "You need to look at your business as nothing remains the same. 

"Everything is dynamic. It is a way to look at all of the critical things: your key employees, your markets, key roles in your business and your role in your business. What happens if one of those things changes?"

He said business owners need to have plans to keep their businesses rolling through market fluctuations or unforeseen incidents.

The other aspect of succession is plans to leave a business, hopefully, voluntarily.

"It's never too early to start, and it sometimes takes years to get things lined up, so your business is at its greatest valuation," Aumack said.

"And you as a business owner can walk away and say, 'This baby is going to hum, and keep growing without me like a turn-key business," he said. "The closer you get it to turn-key, the more valuable it is.

"If you are the magic that keeps it going, and the magic walks out the door, so does the business."

Reasons owners are forced to quit: • Distress-financial or personal • Disability-physical or mental impairment • Divorce-full of consequences for all parties • Dynamics-changing markets, models and technology • Disputes-between partners • Death-of principal owner

Aumack said there are trade-offs and rarely win-wins.

"It's you getting a really good idea of just how valuable the business is and how much someone is willing to pay for it," he said.

Aumack provided worksheets available through the Small Business Administration that business owners can use to calculate an approximate value for their businesses.

He said it's essential for business owners to separate themselves from their businesses, both on paper and in terms of labor.

He said business owners need to consider if they want to leave their businesses intact for their neighbors, and then what they need financially to carry on after they leave those businesses.

There are three ways to exit a business: Liquidate-No planning needed, yields the least value Sell-Understanding how the business will be valued at exit is essential to this plan. Continue as an absentee owner-Seller financed-exit in stages

Aumack said you need to look at your employees and identify the key employees who drive results.&nbsp;

"How can I incentivize them to keep doing what they're doing and keep them happy and productive?" he said.

Business owners might need to reconsider their debt structure. Service-based business owners might consider purchasing instead of leasing their buildings. This will allow them to build equity in real property.

You could also acquire a smaller competitor or initiate a merger.

Documenting procedures will also help you show value to potential buyers.

He also recommended developing an advisory team. This could include your banker, accountant, CPA or a close friend who can advise you.

As Boomers retire, economist says plan now for future of your business

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed former Trump lawyer&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/emil-bove-trump-fbi-enforcer-firings-3f85887e92154b14f7e04cfc521a0399">Emil Bove</a>&nbsp;50-49 for a lifetime appointment as a federal appeals court judge Tuesday as Republicans dismissed whistleblower complaints about his conduct at the Justice Department. Kansas U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall voted with the majority.

A former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, Bove was on Trump’s legal team during his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0">New York hush money trial</a>&nbsp;and defended Trump in the two federal criminal cases. He will serve on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears cases from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Democrats have vehemently opposed Bove’s nomination, citing his current position as a top Justice Department official and his role in the dismissal of the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. They have also criticized his efforts to investigate department officials who were involved in the prosecutions of hundreds of Trump supporters who were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The audio is from a private video conference call at the Department of Justice in February in which Bove, a top official at the department, discussed his handling of the dismissed case against Adams, according to transcribed quotes from the audio reviewed by The Associated Press.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the whistleblower has not made the recording public. The whistleblower’s claims were first reported by the Washington Post.

None of that evidence has so far been enough to sway Senate Republicans — all but two of them voted to confirm Bove as GOP senators have deferred to Trump on virtually all of his picks.

Democrats say Bove’s confirmation is a ‘dark day’

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that Bove’s confirmation is a “dark day” and that Republicans are only supporting Bove because of his loyalty to the president.

“It’s unfathomable that just over four years after the insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters smashed windows, ransacked offices, desecrated this chamber, Senate Republicans are willingly putting someone on the bench who shielded these rioters from facing justice, who said their prosecution was a grave national injustice,” Schumer said.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against Bove’s confirmation. “I don’t think that somebody who has counseled other attorneys that you should ignore the law, you should reject the law, I don’t think that that individual should be placed in a lifetime seat on the bench,” Murkowski said Tuesday.

At his confirmation hearing last month, Bove addressed criticism of his tenure head-on, telling lawmakers he understands some of his decisions “have generated controversy.” But Bove said he has been inaccurately portrayed as Trump’s “henchman” and “enforcer” at the department.

Senators at the Judiciary Committee hearing asked Bove about the February 14 call with lawyers in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, which had received significant public attention because of his unusual directive that the attorneys had an hour to decide among themselves who would agree to file on the department’s behalf the motion to dismiss the case against Adams.

The call was convened amid significant upheaval in the department as prosecutors in New York who’d handled the matter, as well as some in Washington, resigned rather than agree to dispense with the case.

According to the transcript of the February call, Bove remarked near the outset that interim Manhattan U.S. Attorney&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25526481-sassoon-letter/" target="_blank">Danielle Sassoon</a>&nbsp;“resigned about ten minutes before we were going to put her on leave pending an investigation.” But when asked at the hearing whether he had opened the meeting by emphasizing that Sassoon and another prosecutor had refused to follow orders and that Sassoon was going to be reassigned before she resigned, Bove answered with a simple, “No.”

At another moment, Bove said he did not recall saying words that the transcript of the call reflects him as having said — that whoever signed the motion to dismiss the Adams case would emerge as leaders of the section.

Republicans decry ‘unfair accusations’

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Tuesday that he believes Bove will be a “diligent, capable and fair jurist.”

He said his staff had tried to investigate the claims but that lawyers for the whistleblowers would not give them all of the materials they had asked for. The “vicious rhetoric, unfair accusations and abuse directed at Mr. Bove” have “crossed the line,” Grassley said.

The first whistleblower complaint against Bove came from a former Justice Department lawyer who was fired in April after conceding in court that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abrego-garcia-deportation-error-c0a515baffdf54baba412edf4cdbd310">Kilmar Abrego Garcia</a>, a Salvadoran man who had been living in Maryland, was mistakenly deported to an El Salvador prison.

That lawyer, Erez Reuveni, described efforts by top Justice Department officials in the weeks before his firing to stonewall and mislead judges to carry out deportations championed by the White House.

Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against Bove’s confirmation. “I don’t think that somebody who has counseled other attorneys that you should ignore the law, you should reject the law, I don’t think that that individual should be placed in a lifetime seat on the bench,” Murkowski said Tuesday.At his confirmation hearing last month, Bove addressed criticism of his tenure head-on, telling lawmakers he understands some of his decisions “have generated controversy.” But Bove said he has been inaccurately portrayed as Trump’s “henchman” and “enforcer” at the department.<h2>A February call emerges as evidence</h2>Senators at the Judiciary Committee hearing asked Bove about the February 14 call with lawyers in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, which had received significant public attention because of his unusual directive that the attorneys had an hour to decide among themselves who would agree to file on the department’s behalf the motion to dismiss the case against Adams.The call was convened amid significant upheaval in the department as prosecutors in New York who’d handled the matter, as well as some in Washington, resigned rather than agree to dispense with the case.According to the transcript of the February call, Bove remarked near the outset that interim Manhattan U.S. Attorney&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25526481-sassoon-letter/" target="_blank">Danielle Sassoon</a>&nbsp;“resigned about ten minutes before we were going to put her on leave pending an investigation.” But when asked at the hearing whether he had opened the meeting by emphasizing that Sassoon and another prosecutor had refused to follow orders and that Sassoon was going to be reassigned before she resigned, Bove answered with a simple, “No.”At another moment, Bove said he did not recall saying words that the transcript of the call reflects him as having said — that whoever signed the motion to dismiss the Adams case would emerge as leaders of the section.<h2>Republicans decry ‘unfair accusations’</h2>Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Tuesday that he believes Bove will be a “diligent, capable and fair jurist.”He said his staff had tried to investigate the claims but that lawyers for the whistleblowers would not give them all of the materials they had asked for. The “vicious rhetoric, unfair accusations and abuse directed at Mr. Bove” have “crossed the line,” Grassley said.The first whistleblower complaint against Bove came from a former Justice Department lawyer who was fired in April after conceding in court that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abrego-garcia-deportation-error-c0a515baffdf54baba412edf4cdbd310">Kilmar Abrego Garcia</a>, a Salvadoran man who had been living in Maryland, was mistakenly deported to an El Salvador prison.That lawyer, Erez Reuveni, described efforts by top Justice Department officials in the weeks before his firing to stonewall and mislead judges to carry out deportations championed by the White House.Reuveni described a Justice Department meeting in March concerning Trump’s plans to invoke&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alien-enemies-trump-immigration-deportations-21a62ede23b8c493b60d00a9c125722f">the Alien Enemies Act</a>&nbsp;over what the president claimed was an invasion by the Venezuelan gang&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tren-de-aragua-gang-venezuela-trump-40ec0390047c2b17e961dd029da02e65">Tren de Aragua</a>. Reuveni said Bove raised the possibility that a court might block the deportations before they could happen.
