RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp; Law enforcement authorities are investigating attempted ATM theft in Riley County and asking the public for help to ID suspects.

The suspects are wanted in connection to an attempted theft and criminal damage to property case at Union State Bank in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department.

On Thursday, October 12, around 3:15 AM, surveillance video shows a 2015 Ford F150 enter the drive through at the bank. Two males wearing dark clothes and dark masks exit the truck and attempt to break into the ATM. No money was taken, but damage to the ATM is estimated to be around $15,000.&nbsp;

Just after 4a.m. Thursday, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office said around 4:11 AM, they responded to the 5400 block of Blue River Road for a report of an arson involving a Pottawatomie County Road Department F150 truck believed to be the same truck from the attempted theft. The Sheriff’s Office said in a media release they believe the truck was stolen earlier this morning near Walker and Flush Road in rural St. George.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police ask for help to ID attempted ATM theft suspects

Roberta V. Hairfield, 92, of Larned, Kansas, died on October 11, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned.

Roberta (Bobbie) was born December 20, 1930 in Zurich, Kansas, the daughter of Rudy and Violet Novotny of Hoisington, Kansas.

Roberta graduated from Hoisington High School in 1948 and was employed with Southwestern Bell in Plainville and Hoisington, Kansas.

On May 7, 1951, she married Harry W Hairfield of Hoisington in the Great Bend Methodist Church. They were married 62 years until his death in 2013.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Wm Michael Hairfield (Wendy) of Lynnwood, Washington; Robert Roland Hairfield (Laura), Pasco, Washington; Grandsons, Robert and Matthew; brothers E.J. Novotny, Russell, Kansas; Dr. Wm. G. Novotny, Kansas City; sisters Dolores Morton, Larned; and Sharon Lovesee, Larned.

A loving wide, mother, grandmother, and sister, Roberta will be missed and will live forever in our hearts.

Christopher Groff, age 52, of Garland, Texas, passed away on September 25, 2023, in Garland. He was a loving son, father, brother, and friend, whose memory will forever be cherished. 

Born to proud parents, Victor Groff and Carol Landauer, Christopher's early years were marked by curiosity and a natural knack for all things mechanical. He dedicated his working life to the parts counter at an auto supply store, where he served the Garland community with his expertise and friendly demeanor. Known as a true handyman and tinkerer, he was always eager to tackle any challenge.

Christopher's love for learning and fixing things was truly remarkable. He found joy in watching YouTube how-to videos, using this knowledge to mend and create. His hands were skilled, and his determination unwavering. He wasn't just a spectator; he was a doer.

In his leisure time, Christopher had an array of interests. He enjoyed reality comedy shows, the thrill of sports, and the excitement of fantasy football. His allegiance was unwavering when it came to the Miami Dolphins. He would watch their games with enthusiasm, sharing in the triumphs and the disappointments of his beloved team. 

Christopher is survived by his mother, Carol of Garland. He leaves behind two sons, Nathan Groff of Sunnyvale, Texas, and Ethan Groff of Norman, Oklahoma, who were the pride of his life. Additionally, his brother, Michael Groff of Ellis, and sister, Jennifer "Torrie" Fibash, and husband Glenn of McKinney, Texas, will always hold cherished memories of their time together. He also leaves behind a nephew, nieces, and several close friends who will miss his presence dearly.

Preceding him in death was his father, Victor Groff.

Funeral services in loving memory of Christopher Groff will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis, Kansas. Following the service, inurnment will take place in the church cemetery.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's three automakers have laid off roughly 4,800 workers at factories that are not among the plants that have been hit by the United Auto Workers strikes, which have lasted for nearly four weeks.

The companies say the strikes have nevertheless forced them to impose those layoffs. They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike.

The UAW rejects that argument. It contends that the layoffs are unjustified and were imposed as part of the companies' pressure campaign to persuade UAW members to accept less favorable terms in negotiations with automakers. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York.

Sam Fiorani, an analyst with AutoForecast Solutions, a consulting firm, said he thinks the layoffs reflect a simple reality: The automakers are losing money because of the strikes. By slowing or idling factories that are running below their capacities because of strike-related parts shortages, Fiorani said, the companies can mitigate further losses.

“It doesn’t make sense to keep running at 30% or 40% of capacity when it normally runs at 100%,” he said. “We’re not looking at huge numbers of workers relative to the ones actually being struck. But there is fallout.”

In a statement, Bryce Currie, vice president of Americas manufacturing at Ford, said: “While we are doing what we can to avoid layoffs, we have no choice but to reduce production of parts that would be destined for a plant that is on strike."

UAW President Shawn Fain countered in a statement that the automakers were using layoffs to pressure the union into settling the strike. With billions in profits, Fain argued, the companies don’t have to lay off a single employee.

The UAW began striking against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis on Sept. 15, with one assembly plant from each company. The next week, the union expanded the strike to 38 GM and Stellantis parts warehouses. Assembly plants from Ford and GM were added the week after that.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the union&nbsp; significantly escalated its walkout by going on strike against the largest and most profitable Ford plant in the world. In a surprise move, 8,700 members left their jobs at Ford's Kentucky truck plant in Louisville.

Striking workers are receiving $500 a week from the union’s strike pay fund. By contrast, anyone who is laid off would qualify for state unemployment aid, which, depending on a variety of circumstances, could be less or more than $500 a week.

“Their plan won’t work,” Fain said. “The UAW will make sure any worker laid off in the Big Three’s latest attack will not go without an income.”

GM said it has laid off 2,330 workers, including 1,600 at a temporarily closed assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, that makes the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Cadillac XT4 small SUV. The plant uses metal parts produced at the GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri, which is on strike.

Other GM facilities that have been affected by layoffs are in Lockport, New York; Toledo, Ohio; Marion, Indiana; Parma, Ohio; and Lansing, Michigan.

Ford said it has laid off 1,865 workers. They include 600 auto-body and parts-stamping employees in Wayne, Michigan, who are not on strike but who have been affected by a nearby assembly plant that has been struck. Other Ford locations with layoffs include Chicago; Sterling Heights and Livonia, Michigan; and Cleveland and Lima, Ohio.

Stellantis said late Monday that it had laid off about 640 workers, including 520 at an engine factory complex in Trenton, Michigan, that supplies a Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio, that is on strike. Other locations with layoffs include a metal casting plant in Kokomo, Indiana, and a machining factory in Toledo.

Fiorani said that if the strike widens, more workers will likely be laid off at non-striking plants. Once metal stamping factories that supply multiple assembly plants have produced enough parts for non-striking facilities, the companies would likely shut them down.

“Once you've filled up the stocks for the other plants you supply," he said, “you have to lay off the workers and wait out the strike.”

Separate companies that manufacture parts for the automakers are likely to have laid off workers but might not report them publicly, said Patrick Anderson, CEO of the Anderson Economic Group in Lansing, Michigan.

A survey of parts supply companies by a trade association called MEMA Original Equipment Suppliers found that 30% of members have laid off workers and that more than 60% expect to start layoffs in mid-October.

Fiorani said that while larger parts suppliers can likely withstand the strike, smaller companies that make parts for the bigger companies might not have enough cash or the ability to borrow to outlast the job actions. Some, he said, may have a couple dozen workers “and don't have billions in value to use as collateral in loans,” he said.

Thus far, the union has decided to target a small number of plants from each company rather than have all 146,000 UAW members at the automakers go on strike at the same time.

Last week, the union reported progress in the talks and decided not to add any more plants. This came after GM agreed to bring joint-venture electric vehicle battery factories into the national master contract, almost assuring that the plants will be unionized.

Battery plants are a major point of contention in the negotiations. The UAW wants those plants to be unionized to assure jobs and top wages for workers who will be displaced by the industry's ongoing transition to electric vehicles.

Johanna B. Gnad, Age 93, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on October 7, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis. She was born on February 12, 1930, in Ellis County, Kansas, on the family farm to Rudolph and Johanna (Augustine) Gnad. 

Johanna was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many throughout her long and fulfilling life. Johanna was a dedicated and hardworking individual, known for her unwavering commitment to her family and community. 

For many years, she served as the manager of Wiesner's Grocery in Ellis, demonstrating her strong work ethic and dedication to her community.

J ohanna's life was a testament to her selflessness and kindness. She was a giving person who always put the needs of her family and others before her own. Her generous spirit extended to her involvement in various organizations, including St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and the VFW Auxiliary. 

A remarkable aspect of Johanna's life was her choice to not drive a car. She preferred to walk, showing her determination and commitment to an active lifestyle. Her resilience and refusal to complain, even in the face of life's challenges, made her an inspiration to those who knew her.

Johanna is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her love, care, and guidance. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Johanna, and her siblings, John, Ralph, Clarence, Theresa Reitmeyer, Anne Doerfler, and Mary Ann Kepka.

Funeral services to honor Johanna's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with a Daughters of Isabella rosary service at 10:30, all at the church.

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of vehicle burglaries have a suspect in custody.

Six of the burglaries took place between 4:30 and 5:30a.m. Wednesday in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. Those occurred in the 1600 Block of 6th Street; 600 Block of Spring Garden; 1200, 1400 and 1500 Block of South 7th Street and the 1200 Block of Riverview Drive.

One burglary took place October 6, in the 600 Block of North 3rd Street. Others occurred September 8, in the 700 block South 8th Street

The suspect identified as&nbsp;Kyler J. Reynolds, 25, Atchison, allegedly took&nbsp;purses, cash, financial cards and duffle bags.

As police were investigating Wednesday and following leads, they saw Reynolds on a bicycle in the area of 4th and U.S.59. Reynolds attempted to flee from officers but was apprehended near 2nd and Main Street just after 9a.m., according to Wilson.

He is being held on requested charges of vehicle burglary and theft involving eight cases.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to the burglary and theft charges, Reynolds was also arrested on a District Court warrant for failure to appear in court in connection to previous burglary and theft cases.&nbsp;

John Vaughan, age 79, passed away on June 28, 2023. He was born October 21, 1944, to John Y, and Arla (Baker) Vaughan in North Dakota. John was the oldest of four children: Betsy (Randy) Graff, Vicki (Larry) Vondron, and Bruce (Cindy) Vaughan.

Dorleen, age 73, passed away on August 4, 2023. She was born April 7, 1950, in Eads, Colorado to Emerson and Georgia Ruth (Decker) Griffin. Following graduation from Ft Morgan High School, class of 1968, Dorleen married John Vaughan on June 16, 1968. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just prior to John’s passing.

John graduated from Wiggins High School in 1963.&nbsp; He served in the USAF for 4 years and was stationed in Ramstein, Germany. He then worked for BC Equipment in Fort Morgan, CO, and then went on to own several businesses, including Sears in Canon City, CO. 

John enjoyed spending time with his model train collection.&nbsp; He loved being a part of his bowling league, and he adored his two cocker spaniels, CoCo and Patches.

Dorleen and John owned several businesses including the Sears Store in Canon City. Dorleen also sold Avon Cosmetics. She loved to watch the Hallmark Channel and was known for her gifts of Hallmark Ornaments and cards to family and friends.

They are survived by a daughter, Heather (Chuck) McDuffie; a grandson, Justin (Danielle) McDuffie; and three great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Kaiden, and Tucker.

Dorleen is survived also by her sisters Diane (Albert) Wurst, Donna Cullen, Connie Ziolkowski; and brother Dale (Janice) Griffin.&nbsp;

John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Arla Vaughan.

Dorleen is preceded in death by her parents, Emerson Griffin and Georgia Young; and brother, Duane Griffin.

A graveside memorial service will be held for both John and Dorleen in Tribune, KS on October 13, 2023, at 11:00 with pastor Jeri Smith.

Elsie Faye Wright, age 81, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on October 7, 1942, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Uless Francis Turley, and Nora Marie Smith. 

She spent most of her life in Scott City, moving from Missouri after residing there for two years. Elsie was a cosmetologist, waitress, and a loving homemaker.&nbsp;

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On October 21, 1956 she married Milton William Wright in Clayton, New Mexico. He passed away on October 11, 1998, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter Cindy Oeser of Scott City, Kansas, brother Clifford Turley of Garden Plains, Kansas, 11 grandchildren - Billie Jo Mortimore of Scott City, Kansas, Michelle Nix of Scott City, Kansas, Laurie Chavez of Scott City, Kansas, Joshua Bennett of Scott City, Kansas, Kurtis McDaniel of Scott City, Kansas, Amanda Corry of Sacramento, California, Catherine Jurado of Vernal, Utah, Jarod Wright of Bend, Oregon, Remington Wright of Kearney, Nebraska, Sterling Wright of Axtell, Nebraska and 17 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Elwood Roy Harshbarger, 80, Norton, Kansas, was promoted to heaven on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Roy Harshbarger was born on January 3, 1943, in Hays, Kansas to Marcus and Francis (Canaday) Harshbarger and born again when he placed his trust in Jesus Christ as his Savior.

He was preceded in heaven by his wife, Carol Marie (Saddler), parents and a grandson, Lance Harshbarger.

Survivors include his sister, Mrs. Cindy Bridges and husband Ron of Neosho, MO; four sons, Daniel and wife Vickie of Ingalls, KS, David and wife Shelley of Norton, KS, Kevin and wife Tracey of Spring Valley, OH, and Kary and wife Amber of Wichita, KS; nine grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren with another one on the way; and three step-great-grandchildren with another one expected soon.

Paul Eugene Achatz, 71, passed away on October 8, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on August 19, 1952, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Milton E. and Bertha (Birzer) Achatz.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Paul was a truck driver during his working years. 

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, also attending mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, Knights of Columbus, and SRCA Dragstrip. Paul enjoyed restoring classic cars and working in his yard and garden. He most loved doing things for his children and grandchildren, and spending time with family.

Survivors include a son, Scott Achatz of Johnstown, Ohio; a daughter, Kristi Oetken and her husband, John, of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Laci Oetken and Kaden Achatz; three brothers, John Achatz and his wife, Bonnie, of Wichita, Kansas, Charlie Achatz and his wife, Barb, of Raymore, Missouri, and Gerald Achatz and his wife, Glenna, of Great Bend, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Lester Achatz.

Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 20, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Lakin Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood, Kansas, with Father Terrance Klein presiding.  </figure>August 19, 1952 - October 8, 2023Paul Eugene Achatz, 71, passed away on October 8, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on August 19, 1952, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Milton E. and Bertha (Birzer) Achatz.A lifetime Barton County resident, Paul was a truck driver during his working years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, also attending mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, Knights of Columbus, and SRCA Dragstrip. Paul enjoyed restoring classic cars and working in his yard and garden. He most loved doing things for his children and grandchildren, and spending time with family.Survivors include a son, Scott Achatz of Johnstown, Ohio; a daughter, Kristi Oetken and her husband, John, of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Laci Oetken and Kaden Achatz; three brothers, John Achatz and his wife, Bonnie, of Wichita, Kansas, Charlie Achatz and his wife, Barb, of Raymore, Missouri, and Gerald Achatz and his wife, Glenna, of Great Bend, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Lester Achatz.Cremation has taken place. Vernon “Leroy” Hutton, passed away on October 7, 2023 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 91. &nbsp;He was born Feb. 7, 1932 in Rooks County, the son of Vernon and Edna (Brown) Hutton.

Survivors include his wife Arlyne; son Kirk of Blair, NE; daughters Sharon Kinnan of Oakdale, NE and Muriel Iman of Agra; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Jonathan Iman officiating. &nbsp;The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;The family will receive friends from 9:30 until service time on Friday.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Woodston Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home.

Renea Joleen Williams-Deines, 54, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on October 2, 2023. &nbsp;Renea was born in WaKeeney on March 16, 1969. 

She graduated from Trego Community High School and continued furthering her education, earning multiple college credit hours.

Renea was united in marriage to Alfred Katt and had two children. 

She worked as a cashier for Malay’s Market for over a year. She loved speaking with everyone who came into the store, keeping up on the latest news around the community, and always had a cheerful demeanor and a contagious smile. &nbsp;Renea was known for her empathy towards others, which she exhibited during her time working at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital as well as the Trego County EMS.&nbsp;

Renea is survived by her partner, Mikeal Williams, children, Daneille Katt of Rochester, MN, and Brandon and Marc Katt-Kent of Manhattan, KS, brother, Shawn (Kerah) Deines, sisters, Janelle Deines, and Brenda Hilmes, all siblings, of WaKeeney, KS, and other family and friends.

Renea was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and LeVay Deines, and brother-in-law, Kenneth Hilmes.

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Kansas man facing multiple drug allegations made his first court appearance Tuesday.

 Kyle D. Stevens, 30 of Larned, is charged with Possession of 115..3 Grams of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute within 1000 Feet of a School; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia suitable to Cultivate Marijuana; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia suitable to Distribute a Controlled Substance; Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Unlawful Use of a Telecommunication Device and Misdemeanor Drug Paraphernalia suitable to ingest a controlled substance, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

The charges stem from an ongoing investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department and Larned Police Department resulting in the execution of search warrant at Steven’s Larned residence on October 8.

Stevens was arrested without incident at the time of the search warrant and is being held on a $90,000 bond. Stevens has three previous drug convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp;He is due back in court for a  Preliminary Hearing October 23.

Kan. lawmaker, White House honor National Coming Out Day

Christopher Adam “Chris” Stegman, age 55, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Hays Medical Center.

He was born in Dodge City, Kansas, December 6, 1967, the fourth of four children of Dennis T. and Leslie (Davis) Stegman. Being the youngest child, Chris was forced to become the family comedian to get his share of attention, a role at which he excelled and continued to perfect his entire life. His children were forced to acquire the same skill in order to join the conversation.

Chris attended Sacred Heart Cathedral grade school in Dodge City, junior and senior high school in Dodge City and Midland, Texas. 

In 1986 he moved to Hays and in 1988 he joined the U.S. Army Reserves. On December 26, 1990, he deployed with the 388th MEDSOM Unit and his best friend, Mark Nansel, to King Khalid Military City, Saudi Arabia, to serve in Operation Desert Storm, something that would prove pivotal in his life. 

He returned in April 1991 and soon became engaged to Debbie Burns. They were married November 30, 1991, in Hays and had three children, Garreth, Shelby, and Rebecca.

He worked at Heartland Building Center and the truss plant while volunteering with the Ellis County Rural Fire Department until he became a full-time firefighter with the Hays Fire Department in 1998. He retired as a shift captain in 2018. On his off days he worked with his dear friend, John Moravak at Professional Fire Equipment in Hays.

Chris was a proud veteran and very active with the VFW, serving as District Commander and Commander of the Fort Hays VFW Post #9076, a position he long said he would have to die out of. (He is looking for help to make the Stars and Stripes breakfast next month.) He was recognized in 2012 for completing the Certified Public Manager program through the University of Kansas. He had numerous certifications in emergency management through the National Fire Academy. He served on local and regional Hazmat teams and the Northwest Kansas Regional Homeland Security Council. He was deployed by FEMA for recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

The most important thing in Chris’s life was his family, especially his granddaughter Baylee, who called him Paw-Paw and he called her Bug. Everyone realized early that Baylee, perhaps, was his best comedic student, becoming a master at his humor. Everything he did revolved around her and his children.

Chris and Deb enjoyed attending concerts and seeing comedians. He never passed by a casino without stopping to see if he could take home some of their money, something he often did. Chris lived by the motto “life’s a gamble.” He taught his children that “if you’re not early, you’re late.” He was usually the first to arrive for any party or family gathering, sporting his trademark floral shirt and appropriate (or inappropriate) jokes.

On August 30 Chris was diagnosed with renal cancer that had metastasized to other parts of his body. The VA has determined that the cancer was directly related to his service in Desert Storm. Despite his intention of fighting, the cancer was too widespread and aggressive.

His is survived by his wife, Deb, of the home; his three children, Garreth and Shelby of Hays, KS; Rebecca, of Arlington Heights, IL; his granddaughter, Baylee; his three siblings, Denise Riedel and husband, Charlie, of Overland Park, KS; Sabrina Howerton and husband, Doug, of Cape Coral, FL; Steve Stegman and wife, Judith, of Texarkana, TX; his stepfather, Wayne Jobe, of Kansas City, KS; his mother-in-law, Marie Burns, of&nbsp;Concordia, KS; nieces and nephews, Andy Riedel; Josh Edge; Elizabeth Hiatt and husband, Thomas; Curtis Edge and wife, Katie; Steven Stegman and wife, Tara; Victoria Jones and husband, Larry; Katherine Riedel and husband, Cody Fiola; his aunts, Betty Gallaway, of Crystal City, MO, Chris Lowery and husband, Tom, of Dodge City, KS; Stephanie Koenke and husband, Richard, Eloy, AZ; his six great-nieces and nephews; and lots of cousins.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 12:00 to 1:20 p.m. Friday, October 13, at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, before going to the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, KS for a 2:00 p.m. burial with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post # 9076. (Chris would love being buried on Friday the 13th, the day before a “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse).

A Celebration Of Life Service will be held at 11:00 s.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, with Pastor Josh Gelatt officiating. The Hays Fire Department will present honors and the Last Call. Chris requests that military and first responders wear Class As to the service. Everyone else should wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt, or borrow one from his closet.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, and from 10:00 to 11:00 s.m. Saturday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

JOHNSON COUNTY —After a Kansas bicyclist was struck and killed Oct. 6, in Johnson County, law enforcement authorities released a video reminding drivers to&nbsp;stay alert and remember to look both ways while initiating a right turn at an intersection.

In addition to the fatal accident in Olathe, the bicyclist in the video was hit at the intersection of 119th Street and Quivira Road in Overland Park last week.&nbsp;The bicyclist was injured but will recover.

JOHNSON COUNTY —After a Kansas bicyclist was struck and killed Oct. 6, in Johnson County, law enforcement authorities released a video reminding drivers to&nbsp;stay alert and remember to look both ways while initiating a right turn at an intersection.<div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">Motorist please remember to look both ways while initiating a right turn at an intersection. Katherine Culbertson passed away Monday, October 9,2023 at the Phillips County Retirement Center. &nbsp;Francis Katherine Culbertson was born in Willacy County, Texas to Wilburn Frank and Cora May (Wheelock) Brownfield.

Katherine met L. Kent Culbertson while attending college, on a blind date, while he was serving in the Army Air Corps. They were married after the war on December 24,1945 in her parents’ home. &nbsp;Kent served some additional time in the Army before they returned home to Long Island, Kansas.

Katherine was very involved locally with different organizations. Katherine started the Christmas Is Sharing program and helped with the local food pantry. She was a member of the library board and worked very diligently in getting the new library building built, and went on to serve on the state library board. 

Katherine was a proud supporter of the local hospital and served with the local hospital auxiliary and was elected President of the Kansas Hospital Auxiliary Association. &nbsp;She also was one of the early supporters of Hospice and was always at the annual fundraiser to greet attendees and make announcements. 

Katherine was very involved with the United Presbyterian church teaching Sunday School and serving on the Session.

Katherine was elected President and to the Board of Directors of The First National Bank &amp; Trust after her husband’s death in 1976. She worked at the bank until her retirement in 1991.

Katherine’s biggest joy was reading to elementary children at school. “Granny” read to classes and worked with individual students to advance their reading skills.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband L. Kent Culbertson, her brother John Brownfield and her parents Frank and Cora May Brownfield. &nbsp;

She is survived by her daughters Countess (Greg) Merten of Marshall, Va., Robin Gillan (Dale) of Payson, Az. And Gay (Jon) Taylor of Brevard, N.C., her son Lloyd (Deanna) Culbertson of Phillipsburg, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, October 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, Kansas with Rev. Darlene Nonhof and Joel Hiesterman presiding. 

Memorials have been established with Hospice Services and the L. Kent Culbertson Scholarship Fund.
