NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Memorial Day is supposed to be about mourning the nation’s fallen service members, but it’s come to anchor the unofficial start of summer and a long weekend of discounts on anything from mattresses to lawn mowers.

Auto club AAA said in a travel forecast that this holiday weekend could be “one for the record books, especially at airports,” with more than 42 million Americans projected to travel 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more.

But for Manuel Castañeda Jr., 58, the day will be a quiet one in Durand, Illinois, outside Rockford. He lost his father, a U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam, in an accident in California while training other Marines in 1966.

“Memorial Day is very personal,” said Castañeda, who also served in the Marines and Army National Guard, from which he knew men who died in combat. “It isn’t just the specials. It isn’t just the barbecue.”

But he tries not to judge others who spend the holiday differently: “How can I expect them to understand the depth of what I feel when they haven’t experienced anything like that?”

WHAT IS THE OFFICIAL PURPOSE OF MEMORIAL DAY?

It’s a day of reflection and remembrance of those who died while serving in the U.S. military, according to the Congressional Research Service. The holiday is observed in part by the National Moment of Remembrance, which encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.

The holiday stems from the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members — both Union and Confederate — between 1861 and 1865.

There’s little controversy over the first national observance of what was then called Decoration Day. It occurred May 30, 1868, after an organization of Union veterans called for decorating war graves with flowers, which were in bloom.

The practice was already widespread on a local level. Waterloo, New York, began a formal observance on May 5, 1866, and was later proclaimed to be the holiday's birthplace.

Yet Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, traced its first observance to October 1864, according to the Library of Congress. And women in some Confederate states were decorating graves before the war’s end.

But David Blight, a Yale history professor, points to May 1, 1865, when as many as 10,000 people, many of them Black, held a parade, heard speeches and dedicated the graves of Union dead in Charleston, South Carolina.

A total of 267 Union troops had died at a Confederate prison and were buried in a mass grave. After the war, members of Black churches buried them in individual graves.

“What happened in Charleston does have the right to claim to be first, if that matters,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theitem.com/stories/charleston-can-lay-claim-to-1st-memorial-day,59042?">Blight told The Associated Press in 2011</a>.

In 2021, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel cited the story in a Memorial Day speech in Hudson, Ohio. The ceremony’s organizers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sc-state-wire-lifestyle-memorial-day-race-and-ethnicity-f649e76fd5ae6140d501ac9dc0cac380">turned off his microphone</a>&nbsp;because they said it wasn’t relevant to honoring the city’s veterans.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-memorial-day-race-and-ethnicity-fea889be51b01a8b4c8f31480a21af79">The event’s organizers later resigned</a>.

HAS MEMORIAL DAY ALWAYS BEEN A SOURCE OF CONTENTION?

Someone has always lamented the holiday’s drift from its original meaning.

As early as 1869, The New York Times wrote that the holiday could become “sacrilegious” and no longer “sacred” if it focuses more on pomp, dinners and oratory.

In 1871, abolitionist Frederick Douglass feared Americans were forgetting the Civil War’s impetus — slavery — when he gave a Decoration Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery.

“We must never forget that the loyal soldiers who rest beneath this sod flung themselves between the nation and the nation’s destroyers,” Douglass said.

His concerns were well-founded, said Ben Railton, a professor of English and American studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Even though roughly 180,000 Black men served in the Union Army, the holiday in many communities would essentially become “white Memorial Day,” especially after the rise of the Jim Crow South, Railton said.

Meanwhile, how the day was spent — at least by the nation’s elected officials — could draw scrutiny for years after the Civil War. In the 1880s, then-President Grover Cleveland was said to have gone fishing — and “people were appalled,” said Matthew Dennis, an emeritus history professor at the University of Oregon.

By 1911, the Indianapolis 500 held its inaugural race on May 30, drawing 85,000 spectators.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/4c4507a3b0a8412d9c035cf59059f159">A report from The Associated Press</a>&nbsp;made no mention of the holiday — or any controversy.

Dennis said Memorial Day's potency diminished somewhat with the addition of Armistice Day, which marked World War I's end on Nov. 11, 1918. Armistice Day became a national holiday by 1938 and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

An act of Congress changed Memorial Day from every May 30th to the last Monday in May in 1971. Veterans objected: “They didn’t want to be just some random Monday that people could forget about,” Dennis said.

In 1972, Time Magazine said the holiday had become “a three-day nationwide hootenanny that seems to have lost much of its original purpose.”

WHY IS MEMORIAL DAY TIED TO SALES AND TRAVEL?

Even in the 19th century, grave ceremonies were followed by leisure activities such as picnicking and foot races, Dennis said.

The holiday also evolved alongside baseball and the automobile, the five-day work week and summer vacation, according to the 2002 book, “A History of Memorial Day: Unity, Discord and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

In the mid-20th century, a small number of businesses began to open defiantly on the holiday.

Once the holiday moved to Monday, “the traditional barriers against doing business began to crumble,” authors Richard Harmond and Thomas Curran wrote.

These days, Memorial Day sales and traveling are deeply woven into the nation's muscle memory. This weekend, 2.7 million more people will travel for the unofficial start of summer compared to last year — despite inflation, according to AAA.

Jason Redman, 48, a retired Navy SEAL who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he'll be thinking of friends he's lost. Thirty names are tattooed on his arm “for every guy that I personally knew that died.”

He wants Americans to remember the fallen — but also to enjoy themselves, knowing lives were sacrificed to forge the holiday.

From the Civil War to mattress sales, Memorial Day is full of contradiction

Kansas Reflector: Weeklong series to examine influence of religious beliefs on policy decisions at Statehouse

WICHITA — When Marquetta Atkins was 7 or 8 years old and the subject of slavery came up at school, she was the only Black child in the classroom.

Everyone would turn and look at her as though she were a slave.

“If I can be subjected to something like that, why can’t your kids know the truth?” Atkins said.

Atkins’ work as executive director for Progeny, a youth advocacy group in Wichita, often places her in conflict with lawmakers who refuse to acknowledge systemic racism.

For the past two years, Kansas Republicans have been more interested in shielding white children from the application of “critical race theory” — a political catchall they apply to grievances with history lessons and diversity training. The opposition is consistent with fringe Christian beliefs on race.

Kansas Reflector is examining the influence of religious beliefs on state government through a series of stories.

In an interview for this series, Atkins said political leaders were willing to ignore the truth about this country’s history and undo progress “just so white men can feel comfortable.”

“You know, my mother was a little girl when the civil rights movement was happening,” Atkins said. “She’s not that old. And it was some of these people that are in these offices right now who were young and anti-civil rights movement, and they’re holding seats right now. And when you look at some of those pictures of people spitting on people, and people doing violent things to people — these are people’s grandparents that are alive, right now.

“So imagine your grandchild looking at a history book and seeing you spitting on someone just because they were Black. Is that a story you want your grandchild to see?”

Reno County Republicans who met in March considered the topic of race from a Biblical perspective. A secret audio recording of their conversation, which included local and state GOP officials, two legislators and unidentified crowd members, was shared with Kansas Reflector. The meeting took place at Riverside Baptist Church in Hutchinson.

A point of emphasis in the conversation: Everybody descended from Adam and Eve, and we are all children of Noah.

“We are all related,” an unidentified woman said. “We are one blood according to the Book of Acts. And so there is no such thing as race. And to make such a thing of this is just ridiculous.”

Adam Peters, GOP chairman for Ellis County, told her “that’s absolutely true.”

Where does “whiteness” come from, Peters asked? Not the devil, he assured the 50-75 people at the meeting. He explained that his ancestors simply didn’t get enough vitamin D in their diet.

“You need pale skin to collect the sun, right? That’s the answer to that,” Peters said. “It’s just a simple result of history and nature that made me look the way that I am. That doesn’t make me a disease. That doesn’t make me the cause of the world’s problems. It’s just the way that God saw fit to create.”

But Peters and others at the meeting embraced racist tropes. They reasoned that Black men are more likely to commit crime because of low marriage rates.

“The main reason why Black suspects are disproportionately killed by the police is they disproportionately tried to kill the police,” Peters said. “Now, you may hear that a disproportionate number of Black suspects are killed while unarmed. This is true, but unarmed does not equal not a threat.”

The comments were part of a larger discussion on critical race theory and protests that stemmed from&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/06/25/derek-chauvin-sentenced-to-22-5-years-in-prison-for-murder-of-george-floyd/">a police officer’s murder</a>&nbsp;of George Floyd in 2020.

After Floyd’s death, Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly formed a task force to study racial equity and justice. The panel&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/12/25/governors-task-force-outlines-more-than-120-ideas-for-improving-equity-justice/">outlined more than 100 ideas</a>&nbsp;for addressing education, health care and economic issues — but the Republican-controlled Legislature held&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/04/22/after-george-floyds-murder-a-racial-equity-panel-proposed-changes-the-kansas-legislature-ignored-them/">no hearings on any corresponding legislation</a>. The panel’s proposals were&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/10/07/schmidt-blasts-kellys-justice-commission-despite-his-affirmation-of-racial-bias-by-kansas-police/">the basis for political attacks</a>&nbsp;on Kelly during last year’s governor’s race.

Instead, lawmakers focused on keeping critical race theory out of public schools.

Rep. Kristey Williams, an Augusta Republican and chairwoman of the K-12 Education Budget Committee, said during an October 2021 meeting that rising child suicide rates could be blamed on the way history is taught in public schools. A&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/11/18/kansas-child-death-report-looks-beyond-reps-claim-that-critical-race-theory-shames-white-girls/">review of child deaths</a>&nbsp;didn’t support her claims.

“If we go back to any race of people in any part of the world, you’re going to find things that you’re very proud of, and things that you would be very disturbed to know,” Williams said. “But to place that burden on a little white girl, compared to another person of another ethnic or racial background, is wrong. And she should not feel shame or guilt for something that she cannot control — one, her skin color; number two, the past that predated her.”

This year, the Legislature tried to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/03/19/kansas-senate-budget-bill-features-3-25-spending-cut-imposes-dei-ban-at-universities/">block state universities</a>&nbsp;from asking faculty members, students and contractors about diversity, equity and inclusion. Concerns about racial disparities surfaced in debates on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/24/its-set-up-to-fail-kansas-youth-justice-leaders-discuss-states-lack-of-progress/">juvenile justice</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/03/03/kansas-lawmakers-entertain-texas-groups-plan-to-penalize-homeless/">homelessness</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/08/house-republicans-explore-new-way-to-punish-low-income-aging-kansans-seeking-food/">restrictions on food assistance</a>.

In the closing days of the session, Rep. Ford Carr complained that legislation legalizing fentanyl test strips had been packaged with tougher penalties for fleeing and eluding police. Carr, who is Black, said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/05/01/white-kansas-lawmaker-denies-racism-in-house-this-body-is-more-compassionate-and-loving/">the bill was an attempt to punish young Black men</a>&nbsp;who have good reason to fear police.

“People are scared, and when they’re scared they do things,” Carr said. “They try to evade and get away.”

Rep. Trevor Jacobs, a Fort Scott Republican, marched to the front of the House to offer a rebuttal. Jacobs said he was sick of hearing that “pretty near every single bill that we do up here involves race or bigotry.”

“It’s not about race or racism here,” Jacobs said. “And if it is, I believe that this body is more compassionate and loving to not embrace that. It gets old.”

Carr returned to the front of the House to respond.

“I would be a bitter fool to believe that there isn’t someone in here or some people within this body where race is an issue,” Carr said. “The fact that we want to wish it away is easy when it doesn’t affect you.”

Atkins, the Progeny leader, said systemic oppression has always existed in this country. After slavery, Jim Crow laws and the redlining of communities continued to oppress Black people, she said.

“And so now we’re at a point in this country where people want to say racism doesn’t exist,” Atkins said. “But a little boy knocked on somebody’s door in Kansas City, looking for his brother and sister, and had the wrong address. And that&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/30/kansas-city-shooting-suggests-double-standard-for-arrest-between-black-and-white-people/">caused him to be shot two times</a>. Just ringing a doorbell.”

Andrew Lester, an 84-year-old white man, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for shooting Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old Black boy, twice in the head on April 13.

Atkins marveled at the idea that Black people would want to make up the idea of being oppressed.

“They’re literally telling a whole community of people that your stories are invalid,” Atkins said. “Like we would want to sit up here and make up racism. Like we want to make up being oppressed. And it’s the most foolish s*** — I’m sorry — that I’ve ever heard in my entire life, because you’re invalidating all that I am and all that I experienced in my life.”

The panel&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/12/25/governors-task-force-outlines-more-than-120-ideas-for-improving-equity-justice/">outlined more than 100 ideas</a>&nbsp;for addressing education, health care and economic issues — but the Republican-controlled Legislature held&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/04/22/after-george-floyds-murder-a-racial-equity-panel-proposed-changes-the-kansas-legislature-ignored-them/">no hearings on any corresponding legislation</a>. The panel’s proposals were&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/10/07/schmidt-blasts-kellys-justice-commission-despite-his-affirmation-of-racial-bias-by-kansas-police/">the basis for political attacks</a>&nbsp;on Kelly during last year’s governor’s race.Instead, lawmakers focused on keeping critical race theory out of public schools.Rep. Kristey Williams, an Augusta Republican and chairwoman of the K-12 Education Budget Committee, said during an October 2021 meeting that rising child suicide rates could be blamed on the way history is taught in public schools. A&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/11/18/kansas-child-death-report-looks-beyond-reps-claim-that-critical-race-theory-shames-white-girls/">review of child deaths</a>&nbsp;didn’t support her claims.“If we go back to any race of people in any part of the world, you’re going to find things that you’re very proud of, and things that you would be very disturbed to know,” Williams said. “But to place that burden on a little white girl, compared to another person of another ethnic or racial background, is wrong. And she should not feel shame or guilt for something that she cannot control — one, her skin color; number two, the past that predated her.”This year, the Legislature tried to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/03/19/kansas-senate-budget-bill-features-3-25-spending-cut-imposes-dei-ban-at-universities/">block state universities</a>&nbsp;from asking faculty members, students and contractors about diversity, equity and inclusion. Concerns about racial disparities surfaced in debates on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/24/its-set-up-to-fail-kansas-youth-justice-leaders-discuss-states-lack-of-progress/">juvenile justice</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/03/03/kansas-lawmakers-entertain-texas-groups-plan-to-penalize-homeless/">homelessness</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/08/house-republicans-explore-new-way-to-punish-low-income-aging-kansans-seeking-food/">restrictions on food assistance</a>.<figure>

 </figure>In the closing days of the session, Rep. Ford Carr complained that legislation legalizing fentanyl test strips had been packaged with tougher penalties for fleeing and eluding police. Carr, who is Black, said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/05/01/white-kansas-lawmaker-denies-racism-in-house-this-body-is-more-compassionate-and-loving/">the bill was an attempt to punish young Black men</a>&nbsp;who have good reason to fear police.“People are scared, and when they’re scared they do things,” Carr said. “They try to evade and get away.”Rep. Trevor Jacobs, a Fort Scott Republican, marched to the front of the House to offer a rebuttal. Jacobs said he was sick of hearing that “pretty near every single bill that we do up here involves race or bigotry.”“It’s not about race or racism here,” Jacobs said. “And if it is, I believe that this body is more compassionate and loving to not embrace that. It gets old.”Carr returned to the front of the House to respond.“I would be a bitter fool to believe that there isn’t someone in here or some people within this body where race is an issue,” Carr said. “The fact that we want to wish it away is easy when it doesn’t affect you.”Atkins, the Progeny leader, said systemic oppression has always existed in this country. After slavery, Jim Crow laws and the redlining of communities continued to oppress Black people, she said.“And so now we’re at a point in this country where people want to say racism doesn’t exist,” Atkins said. “But a little boy knocked on somebody’s door in Kansas City, looking for his brother and sister, and had the wrong address. And that&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/30/kansas-city-shooting-suggests-double-standard-for-arrest-between-black-and-white-people/">caused him to be shot two times</a>. Just ringing a doorbell.”Andrew Lester, an 84-year-old white man, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for shooting Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old Black boy, twice in the head on April 13.Atkins marveled at the idea that Black people would want to make up the idea of being oppressed.“They’re literally telling a whole community of people that your stories are invalid,” Atkins said. “Like we would want to sit up here and make up racism. Like we want to make up being oppressed. The Downtown Hays Market opens for the season Saturday.

This is the farmers market's 10th year of operation and will feature a birthday bash theme with giveaways every Saturday through October 21. Free birthday cupcakes will be handed out this week.

Vendor interest for opening day has been overwhelming, according to Julie Rider, Downtown Hays Development Corp. executive director.

There are 22 reserved vendor spots under the downtown pavilion in Union Pacific Railroad Park, 10th and Main. A few spots are also reserved for food trailers on 10th Street just outside the pavilion.&nbsp;

"More than 40 vendors are registered for our first farmers market," Rider said. "It's going to be a packed house. I'm really excited."

The overflow will be located in the blocked-off 10th Street parking lot west of the pavilion.

Vendors will be selling everything from home-grown fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers, to homemade pet treats, farm-fresh eggs, and ranch-raised meats.

Handmade artwork and crafts are also available for purchase.

The homemade bakery items go fast, Rider cautioned.&nbsp;"If you don't get there early, you may be disappointed." 

A new bakery has signed up to sell its goods for the first time this year, she added.&nbsp;

Complimentary coffee is provided by Breathe Coffee House, the Hays Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and Downtown Hays Development Corp.&nbsp;

Some vendors are registered and eligible to participate in the&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,&nbsp;Double Up Food Bucks, and&nbsp;Kansas Senior Farmers Market.&nbsp;

Buyers who participate in those assistance programs can purchase a variety of locally sourced fresh foods.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/74a3592f-4b78-452d-b8d6-db4d69fe981a">The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is increasing the value of coupons for low-income seniors from $35 to $50.</a> The coupons are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seniors can apply at the Cottonwood Extension District office, 601 Main,&nbsp;between Thursday, June 1 and Friday, September 15, or until benefits are gone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rider, who took over the DHDC position in February and has been a longtime board member, says the farmers market has a casual, family atmosphere.

"People are strolling along, visiting with each other. You see them with their kids and their dogs."

The market has special guests each week, including kids' entertainment, non-profit groups, and adoptable animals from the Western Plains Animal Refuge. Ellis County Master Gardeners will be on hand once a month.&nbsp;

"Ask a Philosopher," hosted by the Fort Hays State University philosophy department, will return again this year. Department philosophers will be available to chat about philosophy, discuss thought experiments, and answer any philosophical questions.

Also returning this year is the popular Jensen Farms booth with locally-produced honey and mushrooms. Mike and Amy Jensen, Hays, have participated in the market since its inception in 2013.

Many vendors are from the area. Others come from as far away as Garden City. 

Vendors can join the market any time. Cost is $25 for the entire season.

New enhancements planned for the pavilion include a permanent sound system, a project spearheaded by the Heartland Community Foundation Youth Action Council with students from Ellis, Trego and Rooks counties.

Rider also would like to see a watering station and a waste station for dogs added.

Benjamin Dome, a student at Victoria High School, will be in his second year as market manager. The position is paid through the Nex-Gen internship program with Nex-Tech.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"He ran the fall market last year. Does a great job, " Rider said.&nbsp;Dome also manages the SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks programs. 

Operating hours of the downtown market are from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

I, Charles LeRoy “Chuck” Wright born February 19, 1925, to Jesse LeRoy Wright and Eliza Ann “Figgins” Wright, in Cawker City, Kansas, Mitchell County. I started school in 1931. I graduated in 1939. I graduated high school in 1943. There were 10 in my class, four girls, and six boys. 

I joined the Navy, Friday 13, 1943. I went to boot camp at Farragut, Idaho, Camp Ward 603-43. I then went to Astoria, Oregon to commission a ship. The USS Fanshaw Bay Cueto, a carrier vessel escort. We were sent to Townville and Brisbane, Australia, with a load of P-38 AirCraft. All were non-flyable in crates. We crossed the International Date Line, February 19, 1945, on my 20th birthday. I spent two and a half years in the South Pacific. I received five Battle Stars, and two Presidential Unit Citations. I was at Leyte Gulf in the Philippine Islands, October 26, 1945 at the world’s greatest sea battle. I was honorably discharged in 1946. We decommissioned our ship.

When we got home, I worked for Richardson’s as a welder. Later I worked for The Farmers Union Store as a meat cutter. Later I moved to Mankato, Kansas. I worked at Dibbles Grocery as a meatcutter. 

In late 1948, I re-enlisted in the Navy at Glenview Naval Air Station. In 1950 I volunteered for oversea duty on the USS Valley Forge CV45, around Korea. My brother Darrell L. Wright was also in the area on the Carrier USS Boxer XV21. I was honorably discharged in 1951. 

I went back to Cawker City and went to work for Barnett Upholstery. In 1952 I went to work for the federal government's Department of Interior, the Department of Reclamation, working on the survey team for the Dam. Then worked in the lab for seven years. There, in 1953, I met a young lady by the name of Jackie Louise Wilson, a telephone operator. My folks stood up with us.

 We were living in Superior, Nebraska. This was the start of our travels to Lovewell Dam to Foss Dam in Oklahoma, to Farwell Canals in Nebraska. Then on to Texas and a dam on the Canadian River, Lake Meredith, Sanford, Texas. Then on July 4, 1965, we left Texas for California to the Tehama Colusa Canals. In 1969 we went to Short Cut Pipeline for 18 months, then back to the canals in northern California until I retired in 1980. 

We sold our mobile home and moved back to Kansas and bought my wife’s folks’ home in 1982. During the summers I helped my brother-in-law, driving a wheat truck.

I did enjoy stamp collecting and coin collecting. Jackie and I also enjoyed metal detecting in our spare time.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Darrell. 

Leaving to mourn his death May 22, 2023, are his wife Jackie of Lenora; Vickie and George Gassmann of Clayton; and other family members, and friends.

In 1952 I went to work for the federal government's Department of Interior, the Department of Reclamation, working on the survey team for the Dam. Then worked in the lab for seven years. There, in 1953, I met a young lady by the name of Jackie Louise Wilson, a telephone operator. My folks stood up with us. We were living in Superior, Nebraska. This was the start of our travels to Lovewell Dam to Foss Dam in Oklahoma, to Farwell Canals in Nebraska. Then on to Texas and a dam on the Canadian River, Lake Meredith, Sanford, Texas. Then on July 4, 1965, we left Texas for California to the Tehama Colusa Canals. In 1969 we went to Short Cut Pipeline for 18 months, then back to the canals in northern California until I retired in 1980. We sold our mobile home and moved back to Kansas and bought my wife’s folks’ home in 1982. During the summers I helped my brother-in-law, driving a wheat truck.I did enjoy stamp collecting and coin collecting. Jackie and I also enjoyed metal detecting in our spare time.Charles was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Darrell. DeWayne R. Herrs, 82, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; 

DeWayne was a retired barber, former owner of Headquarters Hair Care in McPherson.

DeWayne was born on October 27, 1940, in Linn, Kansas, the son of Marvin and Clara (Ohlde) Herrs.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Linn High School in 1958 and from Wichita Barber School.&nbsp; 

On May 9, 1970, DeWayne was united in marriage to Roberta “Bertie” R. Gutsch in McPherson.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children, Ryan, Timothy and Elizabeth.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Master Gardeners &amp; Friends.&nbsp; He was also a board member of Disability Supports and former McPherson High School Booster Club president.&nbsp;

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Roberta “Bertie” of the home; three children, Ryan Herrs (Kelly Lyman) of Wichita, KS, Timothy Herrs of Derby, KS, and Elizabeth Herrs of McPherson, KS; brother Rodney Herrs (Karen) of Tonganoxie, KS; two grandchildren, Jacob Herrs and Benjamin Herrs; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rebecca Meyer (Craig) of Liberty, MO, Robin Chapman (Kenny) of Gallatin, TN, and Rita Martin (Tod) of Casper, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Clara Herrs; siblings Harvey Herrs, Ralph Herrs, and Steve Herrs; parents-in-law Robert &amp; Rosie Gutsch; and sisters-in-law LaDean Herrs and Eunice Herrs.

James Franklin Moore, 78, of Norton, KS passed away May 11, 2023 at the Kearney Regional Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1944 in Almena, KS to Merlin and Atrice (Brewster) Moore.

James grew up in Almena and was a 1962 graduate of Almena Rural High School. 

He entered the United States Air Force at 19 years and served for 38 years. He wanted to see the world, so he put in for overseas duty. During those tours he enjoyed learning about the different cultures and people. Jim served in many locations around the world, from Texas and California to Japan and the Netherlands. He was also highly decorated, and he retired with honors and the rank of Master Sergeant (MSGT) on October 1, 1986 at the Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA. 

Jim married Donna Rose Lagestee in Spokane. 

He enjoyed doing research on Vietnam veterans and having coffee with his friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Harmon. 

He is survived by his wife Donna of the home; son Michael James Biros (Moore) and wife Shellie Werich of Hollinger, NE; stepson Rick Schmidt of Idaho; stepdaughter Kimberly Schmidt of Idaho; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews Barbara Beard of Tainan, Taiwan, Loria Harmon of Hays, KS, Joe Harmon of Memphis, TN, Kellie Harmon of Lawrence, KS and Shelley Weilert of Lawrence, KS.

Strengthened by the sacraments of the Church, Francis Mathew Soukup was called home by his Heavenly Father on May 22, 2023 after defying many odds in his battle against cancer.

Frank was born October 21, 1953 to Raymond and Clare Soukup in the Ellsworth Hospital. 

He was joined in holy matrimony to Jeanette Marie Korf on August 2, 1975. They raised four children: Matthew (Chrissie) of St. Louis, Missouri, Laura (John) Schlessiger of Claflin, Kansas, Daniel (Delena) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Br. Karel, OSB, of Atchison, Kan.&nbsp;

Always intimately involved in the formation and education of his children, Frank was troop leader of the St. Rose Boy Scouts in Great Bend from 1983–1990 and taught catechism at St. Anthony’s Parish in Lakin, Kan. He was a true disciple of Jesus, demonstrating his faith by his many selfless acts of love for his family and community. He never missed a game, concert or event of any kind.&nbsp;

Francis earned a bachelor of science degree from Fort Hays State University in 1990 and afterward dedicated his life to public service as city administrator of Lakin, Kansas from 1991–2006, city manager of Kingman, Kansas from 2006–2014, and business manager for the Ellsworth Correctional Facility from 2014 until his retirement in 2021. He was a member of the board of directors of the Kansas Power Pool and served a term as its president. 

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club and Rotary.

Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, his children and twelve grandchildren, as well as siblings Louise (Leo), Steve (Janie), Jim (Caroline), Pat (Dio) and Fred, and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tom (Carla) and Mike (Karan), sister Joni, and grandchildren Max, Ian, Jay and Molly.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from noon to 5:00 p.m., with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and vigil with Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, Kan.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin, Kan. Interment will follow at Claflin Cemetery.&nbsp;

TOPEKA — Community members and law enforcement officers gathered at the Statehouse on Thursday evening to commemorate bonds that one speaker described “as strong as family.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dozens attended the&nbsp;Law Enforcement Memorial Candlelight Vigil, an annual event held in honor of National Police Week and National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. The vigil began in the first floor rotunda area before moving to the Law Enforcement Monument on the northeast quadrant of the grounds.&nbsp;

The monument, which honors the legacy of officers killed in the line of duty, is updated annually.&nbsp;

“Law enforcement is not just a job or career, it’s calling,” said Topeka Police officer Ben Heusted. “In answering that call, there comes a bond — a bond as strong as family. … Every man and woman that pins on the badge are our brothers and sisters. So tonight is a gathering of family: ; a time to come together to support each other and be there for one another.”

Audience members shed tears as various officers gave speeches, performed songs and led prayers. Outside, friends and family of those lost in the line of duty placed flowers and blue candles on the Law Enforcement Monument. The memorial already contains close to 300 names, and it recently received four more.

Twenty two-year-old Deputy Sidnee Taylor Carter served in the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for more than a year before she was killed in October 2022. While responding to a disturbance call, her patrol car was struck by a motorist who failed to yield at a stop sign. Carter is survived by her mother, stepfather, father, two sisters and two brothers.

Captain Clay Morsell Germany and Officer David Leroy Ingle both died due to complications from COVID-19. Germany, who was 58 at the time of his death, worked for the Wichita Police Department for 26 years. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 in October 2020 and battled respiratory failure until his death in July 2021. Germany is survived by his wife, six daughters and one son.

Ingle, 52, served the city of Iola for nine years. He contracted COVID-19 while performing daily duties and tested positive Dec. 30, 2022. Just five days after being diagnosed, Ingle passed away. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.

The final name comes from further back in history. Deputy James Lucero began his position as deputy sheriff with the Ford County Sheriff’s Office on October 19, 1921, at the age of 49. He also worked as a special officer with the Santa Fe Railway.

According to an article from the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.dodgeglobe.com/2023/05/13/better-now-than-never-ford-county-hero-to-be-honored-100-years-after-his-murder/">Dodge City Daily Globe</a>, an intoxicated man became violent while Lucero was escorting him home Jan. 2, 1922. He shot Lucero, who died a day later. Little is known about Lucero’s lineage, but he had three young children at the time of his death.

The Thursday evening vigil was sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, Topeka #3.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation director&nbsp;Tony Mattivi told the group about the importance of remembering their loved ones’ accomplishments and dedication to duty.

“I can tell you with certainty, as we stand gathered here side by side, we will not forget the sacrifice that your loved one made,”&nbsp;Mattivi said. “We will live with each of their names tonight and tomorrow, and in our hearts each day.”

Rev. Garry Ray Dassow passed into eternal Glory on May 17, 2023, in Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was the fifth of seven boys born to Bernard and Elaine (Fischer) Dassow on October 31, 1939, in Medford, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;Growing up on the family farm was hard, but Garry fondly told of the shenanigans he and his brothers would get into.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those stories often included an old tractor, a rickety wagon, a load of hay, or a pile of wood.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Garry was baptized on November 19, 1939, and confirmed on July 27, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church on Dassow Avenue in Medford, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;His confirmation verse was 1 Timothy 6:12:&nbsp;&nbsp;Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

During confirmation classes, the Holy Spirit began to draw Garry towards ministry, and his Pastor encouraged him to pursue it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry graduated in 1957 from Lutheran High School and in 1959 from Concordia Junior College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1961, Garry received his Bachelor of Pre-Theology from Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and in 1965, his Master of Sacred Theology from St. Louis (Concordia Theological) Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His year of vicarage was spent at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa.&nbsp;&nbsp;While there, he met his future wife, Janet Sizer.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married on August 8, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pastor Dassow’s first call in 1965 was to serve dual parishes in Nebraska: Christ Lutheran Church in Nebraska City and Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn.&nbsp;&nbsp;While in Nebraska, son Matthew and daughter Bethany were born.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1972, the family moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where Pastor Dassow served at St. Paul Lutheran Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;While in Iowa, son Craig joined the family.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1978, they moved to Hoisington where Pastor Dassow served at Concordia Lutheran Church for 27 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;While there, son Tyler completed their family.&nbsp;

sanding and staining used furniture; fixing leaking faucets and running toilets; and swapping out and replacing floor tiles in the church basement.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry would offer to help anyone in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed woodworking; square dancing and traveling after retirement; playing games (especially Sheepshead with family in Wisconsin); and singing songs, reading books, and telling stories to his young grandchildren.&nbsp;Preceding him to heaven were his parents; brothers Larry (Annamae) Dassow, Eugene Dassow, and Duane Dassow; and longtime companion Selma Webb.&nbsp;&nbsp;Left to cherish his memory on earth are his children Matt (Lynn) Dassow of Missouri City, Texas; Beth (Gene) Perry of Axtell, Kansas; Craig Dassow of Salina, Kansas; and Tyler (Rachel) Dassow of Vancouver, Washington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry also leaves granddaughters Kate Perry, Cheyenne Chapin, Sierra Perry, Elina Dassow, Addison Dassow, and Kelby Dassow; great-grandson Zayden; great-granddaughter Victoria; brothers Harvey (Arlene) Dassow of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Everett Dassow of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Delmar (Helen) Dassow of Stetsonville, Wisconsin; and sister-in-law Peggy Dassow of Burlington, Wisconsin.&nbsp;The family thanks the staff of Credo (Country Place) Senior Living in Hoisington for their outstanding care of Garry since 2019 as well as the staff of Kindred Hospice for their loving support.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitation will be Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m., at Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington on, Rev.
