Prairie View Resident, Eleanor Odle, passed away on October 16, 2023, at the Norton County Hospital, age 88.

Eleanor was born on August 12, 1935, in Herndon, Kansas to her parents Pete and Anna (Wudtke) Lorentz.

She was married to Elden Odle on April 8, 1961, in Herndon, Kansas.

Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents Pete and Anna Lorentz, brothers Marvin Lorentz and wife Dixie, and Clarence Lorentz and wife Evelyn, as well as sisters Betty Smith and husband Bob, and Dorothy Alstom and husband Kieth.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Elden Odle, sons Eddy Odle and wife Dawn of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Danny Odle and wife Susan of Kingwood, Texas, daughter Wendy Popp and husband John of Great Bend, Kansas, sister Hazel Rippetoe of Del City, Oklahoma, brother-in-law Richard Odle of Phillipsburg, Kansas, sister-in-law Pat Barnes of Long Island, Kansas, as well as seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service officiated by Pastor Lew Van Der Wege will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, 10:00 a.m., at the Prairie View Reformed Church, in Prairie View, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Mrs. Odle will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, November 6, and Tuesday, November 7, with a visitation from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

KANSAS CITY —The iconic Western Auto sign in Kansas City is shining bright again after a quick fix this week. The T in the sign was out and sportscaster Al Michaels referred to it while on the air during the Chiefs Thursday night game Oct. 12.

On social media, Mayor Quinton Lucas joked, "Kansas City will take the power source from the ferris wheel and apply it to the T in the Wes ern Auto sign."

On Tuesday night Lucas thanked Midwest Sign Company for their efforts and "of course, legendary sportscaster Al Michaels."

Thamer Mote, 92, of Weskan, Kansas passed away at Hope Springs in Sharon Springs on October 16, 2023.&nbsp;He was born on November 13, 1930 to Oris and Pearl (Cooper) Mote in Tolbert, Texas.

After his couple years of military service, Thamer worked for various farmers and found fulfillment in driving a school bus. Thamer also worked for the county road department, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of the local infrastructure.

Outside of work, Thamer had a deep love for the arts and faith. He was a skilled wood carver and artist, creating beautiful works that continue to inspire. His passion for drawing allowed him to express himself creatively and connect with others. 

His faith was an integral part of his life, regularly attending church services and finding solace and wisdom in the pages of the Bible.

One of Thamer's greatest joys in life was the time spent with his family. He cherished family visits, treasuring every moment spent together and creating lasting memories. Additionally, he had a loyal and beloved companion in his dog, Dusty, who was always by his side.

Thamer is survived by his brother Wallace (Doris) Mote of Sharon Springs, Kansas, and sister Hazel Young of Tribune, Kansas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother OD (Janice) Mote, one brother-in-law, Verdell Young and one nephew, Danny Lee Young.

Lenus Edward Schuck, 71, of Edmond, Kansas passed away October 11, 2023. Lenus was born May 9, 1952 in Concordia, Kansas to Alfanso “Al” and Alta (Rowley) Schuck.

Lenus graduated from Hill City High school in 1970. After attending Fort Hays University, he became an avid farmer. He married Diane September 4, 2004, in Hill City, Kansas. Lenus was known to be honest and a hard worker and would do anything for his family and friends.

Lenus is proceeded in death by both his parents and his faithful and beloved companions Annie and Bailey.

 He is survived by his wife Diane of 19 years; son Austin and wife Katie Schuck of Hill City, Steven and wife Chris Breinig of Hays, Robert (Tanya) Breinig of Topeka, Amanda Breinig of Hays; grandchildren Joshua Forbes, Madison Easton, Jordan Breinig and Noah Lantham; many beloved cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held October 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.. at Stinemetz Funeral Home in Hill City.

October 15-21, 2023 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office on Women’s Health celebrates National Women’s Blood Pressure Awareness Week. The 2023 theme is "Getting to the Heart of It All."

The initiative aims to highlight best practices in blood pressure control, raise awareness about the significance of maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, and educate our communities about the contributing factors, and implications of high blood pressure.

A recent survey shows most women do not recognize that heart disease is their number one health threat. We know that many different factors contribute to blood pressure control and heart health.

Blood pressure is the force your blood puts on your artery walls. If this pressure is too high, called hypertension it can damage your heart over time. A blood pressure of less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic is considered normal and healthy by the American Heart Association.

Lifestyle habits such as physical activity and nutrition play a large part in keeping your heart healthy. Many risk factors for developing high blood pressure are modifiable, which means you have the power to change them. Getting enough physical activity each week (150 minutes) and strength training twice a week are the current recommendations. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet and the Mediterranean Diet are two diets recommended for both heart and brain health.

Smoking, vaping and other tobacco use harms nearly every part of the body including the heart. Nicotine raises your heart rate and blood pressure. It’s never too late to quick smoking, vaping or using tobacco products.

Checking your blood pressure regularly is important. You can make an appointment with your health care provider or visit a blood pressure station. Purchasing a monitor and self-monitoring is also an option.

Managing Blood Pressure Before, During and After Pregnancy

Work with your provider before you get pregnant can set you up for success during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy discuss signs and symptoms of preeclampsia with your provider and self-monitor your blood pressure at home. Mental and physical health are closely related. People who experience chronic stress, depression, and anxiety for a long period of time are more likely to develop conditions like high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. It is also common for people to develop mental health conditions after having an event like a heart attack. Managing stress and mental health symptoms is important for proper heart health.

The 2023 theme is "Getting to the Heart of It All."The initiative aims to highlight best practices in blood pressure control, raise awareness about the significance of maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, and educate our communities about the contributing factors, and implications of high blood pressure.A recent survey shows most women do not recognize that heart disease is their number one health threat. We know that many different factors contribute to blood pressure control and heart health.Know the NumbersBlood pressure is the force your blood puts on your artery walls. If this pressure is too high, called hypertension it can damage your heart over time. A blood pressure of less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic is considered normal and healthy by the American Heart Association.Heart Healthy HabitsLifestyle habits such as physical activity and nutrition play a large part in keeping your heart healthy. Many risk factors for developing high blood pressure are modifiable, which means you have the power to change them. Getting enough physical activity each week (150 minutes) and strength training twice a week are the current recommendations. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet and the Mediterranean Diet are two diets recommended for both heart and brain health.Cut Out Tobacco UseSmoking, vaping and other tobacco use harms nearly every part of the body including the heart. Nicotine raises your heart rate and blood pressure. It’s never too late to quick smoking, vaping or using tobacco products.Monitor Your Blood PressureChecking your blood pressure regularly is important. You can make an appointment with your health care provider or visit a blood pressure station. Purchasing a monitor and self-monitoring is also an option.Managing Blood Pressure Before, During and After PregnancyWork with your provider before you get pregnant can set you up for success during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy discuss signs and symptoms of preeclampsia with your provider and self-monitor your blood pressure at home. Just before 10a.m. October 9, an elderly man was struck by a vehicle in the 2300 block of South Dellrose. Detectives are seeking the community’s help to identify the driver and locate the vehicle&nbsp;believed to be a black 2011-2020 Dodge Journey that sustained damage to the oil pan. the vehicle sustained damage to the oil pan.

Police working to ID driver after hit-and-run that injured Kan. man

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Volleyball dropped their mid-week MIAA match with Emporia State on Tuesday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Hornets took the first two sets before the Tigers won the third by two. However, a comeback was not in order as the Hornets put the match away in the fourth set. ESU won by scores of 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, and 25-12.

The Tigers had three set points to work with in the first set, only to see the Hornets rally for five straight points and steal the opening set. A pair of kills, an attack error by FHSU, and then a pair of service aces put the Hornets over the top to win by two.

The Tigers held a five-point lead in the second set only to see the Hornets rally back to a tie at 17-17. Eventually the Hornets snuck past again with a five-point run to take a four-point lead at 22-18. ESU went on to take the set 25-20.

After another five-point lead by the Tigers early in the third set, the Hornets rallied back to even the score at 9-9. From that point, the set was tight, but the Tigers won three of the final four points in the set to take their first set of the night 25-23. Any Tiger comeback hopes were put to bed in the fourth set though when the Hornets went on a seven-point run to extend their lead to 19-8. They closed out the match with a 25-12 set win to knock of the Tigers 3-1.

Gracie Rains&nbsp;led the Tigers with 13 kills, followed by 11 from Riley Tinder, Caiya Stucky&nbsp;recorded 36 assists. Tinder finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 18 digs, while Kirsten Evans&nbsp;added 14 digs.

Sandora Sasaki was the workhorse for the Hornets, putting down 32 kills, but also had 14 errors attacking the ball 70 times. Brailee Bogle handed out 45 assists, while five Hornets reached double figures in digs led by Tasiah Nunnery with 16.

Now 8-13 overall, 2-10 in the MIAA, Fort Hays State hits the road this weekend for conference matches at Pittsburg State (Friday) and Central Oklahoma (Saturday). Emporia State moved to 10-9 overall and 4-7 in the MIAA with the win.

🏐 Tigers fall at home to Hornets in four

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Fort Hays State Women's Golf competed at the Midwest Intercollegiate Tournament held on October 16-17 at the challenging Mules National Golf Club. The 5682-yard, par-70 layout posed a challenge for the competition, resulting in an average stroke count of 82.49 throughout the tournament.

The Tigers opened with a score of 338 in the first round, followed by a 336 on day two. The team concluded the 20-team tournament with a total stroke count of 674, securing 17th overall. Notably, the team managed to register four birdies and 63 pars over the two-day tournament.

Leading the charge for Fort Hays State were Morgan Brasser and Corbyn Marquess, both securing the 33rd spot in the 112-player field. Brasser played posted rounds of 82 and 76, while Marquess&nbsp;posted scores of 78 and 80. Brasser had 22 pars and a birdie to her credit, while Marquess had 17 pars and a pair of birdies.

Hayden York&nbsp;secured the 89th spot with 12 pars and a birdie finishing with rounds of 85 and 89. Shauna Lee&nbsp;finished 102nd overall with rounds of 93 and 91. Ella Neuhauser&nbsp;concluded her performance at 104th place with rounds of 100 and 93.

Central Missouri emerged as the victors in the team competition on their home course, finishing 22 strokes over par. Second place was secured by Minnesota State, who recorded a total of 41 strokes over par as a team. Hayley Jones of Central Missouri clinched the individual title, finishing just 1-over par for the tournament.

The Fort Hays State Women's Golf Team will be back in action next week, competing in the last tournament of the fall season, the Tulsa Cup.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⛳ Marquess, Brasser lead Tiger women at Midwest Classic

KANSAS CITY—A man injured in a two-vehicle accident October 13, has died.

&nbsp;A Nissan Murano driven by Christopher T. Lucas, 23, Kansas City, was southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 Highway. just north of 75th Street, according to Police Captain Corey Carlisle.

 the Nissan traveled off the roadway into the grassy median and then back onto the highway, continued southbound in the #1 lane of northbound U.S. 71 Highway and&nbsp;struck the concrete bridge. After impact as the Nissan was rotating, a northbound Ram 1500 pickup struck the Nissan, struck a guardrail and partially overturned.&nbsp;

Lucas received life threatening injuries. On Tuesday, police reported he died from his injuries. The driver of the Ram pickup received serious injuries and the passenger received minor injuries.&nbsp; The accident remains under investigation and driver impairment is part of the investigation.

Her survivors include her son, Christian Korbe, Medford, OR; her father, Nick Korbe Jr., Virgilina, VA; her brother, Nicholas “Nick” Korbe III, Virginia Beach, VA; her sisters, Barbara Williams and husband, John, Hays, KS; Alicia Gregory, Russell, KS; her uncle, Mervyn Goble and wife, Rosemary, WaKeeney, KS; her aunts, Jan Brungardt, Wellington, KS; Linda Korbe, Hays, KS; Gail Dobson, Hays, KS; Maxine Wellbrock, Hays, KS; and her six nieces and nephews.

(AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman plans to use both veteran Will Howard and Avery Johnson at quarterback going forward after the freshman standout came on against Texas Tech last weekend and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/avery-johnson-xavier-watts-college-football-9e3f435cc037caae33f6c19b0a996a30">matched a school record</a>&nbsp;with five touchdown runs.

The Wildcats were struggling to move the ball&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-state-texas-tech-college-football-f65bd758f60040e9c28ffd20d115bbaa">against the Red Raiders</a>&nbsp;with Howard, who replaced the injured Adrian Martinez last season and led them to the Big 12 championship. But when Johnson entered the game, the dual-threat quarterback energized Kansas State, which wound up overcoming a third-quarter deficit for a 38-21 victory.

“What we learned from this past Saturday is that we've seen Will play at a really high level and be successful, and then we saw Avery play at a high level and be successful,” Klieman said Tuesday. “So we feel comfortable with both guys.”

Howard, who has started the first six games for the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12), has struggled at times this season. He has thrown for 1,310 yards with nine touchdown passes and seven interceptions. That includes three picks two weeks ago at Oklahoma State, when the senior quarterback was just 15 of 34 for 152 yards and a touchdown in the 29-21 loss.

That defeat, coupled with a loss to Missouri in which Howard also struggled, left the Wildcats in a tough position in the Big 12 race. They face TCU on Saturday night in a rematch of last year's conference title game, then play conference newcomer Houston before a showdown with third-ranked Texas that could help decide who plays in this year's championship game.

Kansas State listed both Howard and Johnson as the starter for the Horned Frogs (4-3, 2-2), but Klieman said there will be no decision on the amount of playing time each will receive until the game plan is finalized later in the week.

“If you thought it would be a 60-40, 50-50 or a 90-10 split, we have no idea,” Klieman said. “We're going to go through the game plan and see who, where and what gives us the best opportunity.”

Johnson is known for his blazing speed — some say he's the fastest on the roster — and that showed last Saturday, when he carried 13 times for 90 yards and those five scores. But he also was 8 of 9 for 77 yards through the air against the Red Raiders, and he is 11 of 13 for 132 yards when figuring some playing time against Southeast Missouri State and Missouri.

“We saw the speed instantly, out there running in the summer. ‘This kid can roll.’ And we got into fall camp and it was like, ‘OK, he can throw too,'" Kansas State wide receiver Jadon Jackson said. “He's something special.”

Johnson got a jump on his college career last fall, when he helped lead Maize High School to a second straight Kansas state title before graduating early. That allowed him to enroll at Kansas State at the semester and take place in spring ball.

“First two months he was a little quiet and things like that,” Wildcats running back Treshaun Ward said. “As he got comfortable for us, he started talking more. He's on the right track to be a leader, and he'll be an incredible leader, too.”

Edna “LaVerne” (Horton) Hackerott, of Plainville, KS, passed away on October 15, 2023, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, at the age of 101. She was born on October 18, 1921, to Harry and Ruth (Henry) Workman in Plainville. 

She married Troy Lee Horton on September 10, 1939. To this union four children were born: Jack, Linda, Barbara and Curtis. Troy passed away on January 14, 1972. On August 17, 1974, LaVerne married Gordon Lowell Hackerott and she was blessed with four stepchildren: Roger, Larry, Roberta and Mary. Gordon passed away on March 20, 2001.

LaVerne worked at the Plainville Hospital for many years and retired from there. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, KS. She enjoyed cooking, computer games, word puzzles, lawn work, and embroidery.

Preceding LaVerne in death are her parents, Harry and Ruth Workman; husbands, Troy Horton and Gordon Hackerott; sisters, Eva Ross, Marjorie Jones, and Thelma Conway; brother, Oren Workman; daughters, Linda Mathies and Barbara Mills; and granddaughters, Jordanna Hackerott and Tara Horton.

Her survivors include two sons, Jack (Carolyn) Horton of Golden, CO and Curtis (Debra) Horton of Beloit, KS; son-in-law, Charles Mathies of Manhattan, KS; four stepchildren, Roger (Glenna) Hackerott of Russell, KS, Larry (Diane) Hackerott of Hays, KS, Roberta (Bernard) Ptaschek of Florida, and Mary (Tom) Casey of Hays, KS; 23 grandchildren; 31-plus great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Plainville. Visitation will be the same day, 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow in the Plainville City Cemetery.

October is time for cooler days, warmer drinks, and the start of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cms.gov/priorities/key-initiatives/medicare-open-enrollment-partner-resources">Medicare Open Enrollment Period</a>.

If you have Medicare, October 15 – December 7 is when you can make changes to your Medicare health and Part D prescription drug plans. About now, you’ll probably be seeing ads from plans by mail, email, phone, and on TV. You might hear from scammers, too — but how will you know?

Medicare scammers often look official. They pretend to be from or connected to Medicare, or to a business you know. Their goal? Steal your information. To avoid the scammers:

• Never give personal information to anyone who&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/health-insurance-scams" target="_blank">contacts you out of the blue</a>. Even if the request seems to come from Medicare. They might ask for things like your Medicare, Social Security, or financial account numbers. But&nbsp;<a href="https://www.medicare.gov/basics/reporting-medicare-fraud-and-abuse#:~:text=Remember%20that%20Medicare%20will%20never,a%20member%20of%20the%20plan." target="_blank">Medicare doesn’t call people unexpectedly</a>&nbsp;and ask for your Medicare number or financial information. They won’t call you to sell insurance or health care products. Not sure that call is legitimate? Hang up and call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE.&nbsp;

• Don’t respond to anyone who seems to be from Medicare and asks for your personal info. They might reach out by phone, mail, email, social media message, or text. They might include the Medicare name. They might look or seem government-y. But as soon as they ask for your Medicare, Social Security, or financial account numbers, you know it’s a scam. The real Medicare doesn’t ask for that kind of information. Also, don’t click on links, open any attachments, or call any numbers if you get those messages. They’re probably&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams" target="_blank">phishing</a>&nbsp;for your personal or financial information. FTC: How to avoid Medicare Open Enrollment scams

JERUSALEM, Israel — President Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday to show support for the U.S. ally amid concerns the Israel-Hamas war could become a larger regional conflict, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

Biden will then go to Jordan to meet with Arab leaders, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

Blinken's announcement followed hours of talks with Israeli officials, as well as an invitation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows more dire, Blinken also said the U.S. and Israel had agreed to develop a plan to enable humanitarian aid from donor nations to reach civilians in Gaza, "including the possibility of creating areas to help keep civilians out of harm’s way.”

“We share Israel’s concern that Hamas may seize or destroy aid entering Gaza or otherwise prevent it from reaching the people who need it,” Blinken said.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Biden’s travel to Israel as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows more dire and as Israel prepares for a possible ground attack on the 141-square-mile (365-square-kilometer) territory to root out Hamas militants responsible for what U.S. and Israeli officials say was the most lethal assault against Jews since the Holocaust.

Biden is looking to send the strongest message yet that the U.S. is behind Israel. His Democratic administration has pledged military support, sending U.S. carriers and aid to the region. Officials have said they would ask Congress for upward of $2 billion in additional aid for both Israel and Ukraine, which is fighting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Russia’s invasion</a>.

Blinken made the announcement early Tuesday after more than seven hours of talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials.

“He is coming here at a critical moment for Israel, for the region and for the world,” Blinken said.

Shortly after in Washington, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby announced that Biden would also go to Jordan to meet with King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

“We’ve been crystal clear about the need for humanitarian aid to be able to continue to flow into Gaza," Kirby said. “That has been a consistent call by President Biden and certainly by this entire administration.”

Truckloads of aid idled Monday at Egypt’s border with Gaza,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-war-781b3c63af4ae6e51c313a68f314e66d">barred from entry,</a>&nbsp;as residents and humanitarian groups pleaded for water, food and fuel for dying generators, saying the tiny Palestinian territory sealed off by Israel after last week’s rampage by Hamas was near total collapse.

Biden had been scheduled to travel to Pueblo, Colorado, on Monday but decided to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-boebert-colorado-economy-ab1424ffde9a8178083fe987db5cc839">postpone the visit</a>&nbsp;so he could consult with his aides and speak with fellow leaders about the unfolding situation in the Middle East.

The announcements came after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Biden</a>&nbsp;consulted with a trio of world leaders and his own national security team on Monday amid growing global concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Gaza Strip and fears that the Israel-Hamas war could metastasize into a broader regional conflict.

Biden spoke by phone with Egypt's el-Sissi, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about the fallout from Hamas militants’ surprise attacks on Israel that left 1,400 dead and retaliatory strikes that have killed at least 2,778 Palestinians.

European Union leaders&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-eu-hamas-7674278ef4f7750244c0a772efdb33a7">will hold an emergency summit on Tuesday</a>&nbsp;as concern mounts that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/israel-hamas-war-live-updates">the war</a>&nbsp;between Israel and Hamas could fuel tensions in Europe and bring more refugees in search of sanctuary.

Biden’s call with the Egyptian leader came one day after el-Sissi met with Blinken in Cairo. Egypt’s state-run media said el-Sissi told Blinken that Israel’s Gaza operation has exceeded “the right of self-defense” and turned into “a collective punishment.”

Kirby declined to comment on el-Sissi's concerns about how Israel is conducting the war.

“The humanitarian situation was high on the list of the discussion with President el-Sissi,” Kirby said.

Earlier Monday, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed in the Oval Office by their national security team on the situation on the ground in Israel and Gaza. White House chief of staff Jeff Zients joined the briefing led by national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and Central Intelligence Agency Director Bill Burns, according to the White House.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/antony-blinken">Blinken</a>&nbsp;was in Israel on Monday for his second visit in less than a week for talks with Israeli leaders. He has been crisscrossing the Middle East with stops in Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Blinken, in talks Monday with Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, carried back some of the feedback he received from Arab leaders. He also “underlined his firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself from Hamas’ terrorism and reaffirmed U.S. determination to provide the Israeli government with what it needs to protect its citizens,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

He was born April 11, 1963 in Larned, KS, the son of William “Bill” M. and Helen M. Callahan Walker. &nbsp;

He was a lifetime area resident and employed by the State of Kansas working at Larned State Hospital and Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, retiring in 2017.&nbsp;

He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mike enjoyed travelling on his motorcycle, collecting shot glasses, camping at the lake, and cooking, but his true passion was grilling. He enjoyed time with family and laughing with a one of a kind laugh everyone knew.

On July 14, 1990 he married Diane (Dreiling) Walker, in Larned; they later divorced. &nbsp;She passed away October 25, 2020.

Survivors include his parents; two sons, Alex (Kelci) Walker, Larned and Bryce Walker, Salina; three sisters, JoAn Giles, Larned, Janice Eakin, Great Bend, and Julie (Graig) Peterman, Lyons; brother, Tony Walker, Larned; one granddaughter, Kamryn and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Visitation from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 19, 2023 with family present 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

U.S. operators set an all-time record for crude oil production last week. According to the Energy Information Administration, domestic output averaged 13,218,000 barrels per day last week. That's the best weekly tally ever, 140,000 barrels per day higher than the previous record set in March of 2020. The Energy Information Administration says the total is up 298,000 barrels per day from a week ago and nearly 1.3 million barrels per day higher than a year ago.

Crude-oil inventories increased by 10.2 million barrels, the biggest weekly increase in stockpiles since February. The total, not including the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, is over 424 million barrels as of October 6. The government said U.S. crude imports averaged 6.3 million barrels per day, an increase of 115-thousand barrels per day.

Friday the 13th proved lucky for crude operators last week, after prices jumped by nearly five dollars. Friday's settlement on the Nymex for November light sweet crude was $87.69 per barrel, up $4.78 on the day. That's the highest closing price in nearly two weeks. Lunchtime prices Monday were slightly lower, trading over $87 in New York and a few cents over $90 a barrel in London. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $78 a barrel spiking more than four dollars on Friday.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was 622 active drilling rigs, adding four oil rigs and subtracting one gas rig from last week's count. The total in Texas four rigs. New Mexico was down two.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up three east of Wichita to 15 active rigs, and unchanged at 25 rigs in western Kansas. The weekly tally is up eleven percent from a month ago but down 32% from a year ago. Drilling was underway on Friday on four leases in Ellis County and one in Stafford County.

Kansas operators have spudded 1,019 wells so far this year, down 24% from year ago. Total footage drilled lags last year by nearly 26%.&nbsp; 

Regulators approved 50 new drilling locations statewide last week, with 40 new permits in eastern Kansas and ten west of Wichita including one in Ellis County.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports operators in Kansas completed 30 new wells last week. Regulators in the #3 crude-producing state reported three-percent production growth in August. 

North Dakota crude output topped 1.2 million barrels per day. The state's Department of Mineral Resources says preliminary numbers reflect an all-time record for natural gas production at more than 3.3 million cubic feet per day.

Exxon Mobil and Pioneer Natural Resources jointly announced an all-stock merger agreement worth more than $60 billion. The combined company will boast reserves of 16-billion barrels in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. Output is expected to double to roughly 1.3 million barrels per day. That could grow to about two million barrels per day in the next four years.

The government reports U.S. crude-oil exports during the first half of this year averaged a fraction less than four million barrels per day. That's the highest level since Congress lifted the ban on crude exports eight years ago.

LABETTE COUNTY —The city of Parsons Police Department in conjunction with the Labette County Sheriff's office reported the completion and review of the final necropsy report on the death of K9 Karim on October 11, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

The report determined the extreme temperatures that day stands as the sole factor contributing to the death of the dog.

The sheriff's office has submitted the case to the county attorney's office.According to Sheriff Darrin Eichinger, "Our comprehensive review of the entire case led us to make make the most informed decision possible. Our duty extends to ensuring the best interests of the victim, a sworn police dog, Karim.The Parson police department is organizing a memorial service for K9 Karim.
