Grow Hays, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the ‘Think Like an Entrepreneur’ - Ice House Entrepreneurship Program offered in Ellis County starting September 20. Sessions will be&nbsp;held over eight weeks, Wednesdays September 20 through November 8.

 The goal of the course is to teach participants to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Taught by Kris Munsch, a certified Ice House facilitator, this interactive 8-week program provides practical entrepreneurial lessons through first-hand experiences of successful, real-life entrepreneurs. Based on the book,&nbsp;Who Owns the Ice House, this curriculum consists of case studies along with individual assignments, assessments, and discussion topics. This popular course is offered only a handful of times per year across the state and Grow Hays is excited to have local Kris Munsch teaching the course.

🎙 Ice House/Think Like an Entrepreneur launches in Sept. at Grow Hays

As most of you are aware, over the past few years, most small towns around this part of Kansas have become summer homes to magnificent raptors called Mississippi Kites. They arrive in late April to nest and raise young, then in late October they head to South America for the winter. 

They are marvelous aerialists, and are mesmerizing to watch as they effortlessly glide and navigate the Kansas winds. They feed mostly on insects, and find a real bonanza here when cicadas first appear. Their call is a high-pitched whistle that is very disguisable and common now during mid to late summer.

On Saturday morning two weeks ago, there seemed to be more “kite whistling” going on than usual, and as I walked around the front of our house in preparation for mowing the lawn, I saw why - a very immature Mississippi Kite chick was standing in the lawn along the house. Evidently having tumbled from a hidden nest we were not aware of, the youngster stood there whistling desperately for its parents. I managed to pick it up without getting pecked or clawed and deposited the youngster in the flower bed out-of-the way. A later check found a half-eaten cicada at its feet, telling us its parents were aware of its plight. Later in the day, as the sun became scorching, we moved it again to a corner in front of the house where the sun never directly shines. A small stack of large clay flower pots was laid on their side and turned around and pushed towards the corner, pretty much hiding the little guy from marauding neighborhood cats and a red fox that hunts our end of town, and giving it a place to crawl into at night and out of the weather, which it made good use of. 

Having no idea of its gender, we named it “Kyle the Kite.” 

We spoke to the wildlife rehab people at the Hutchinson Zoo, who told us we were handling the situation correctly by not intervening and by allowing the parents to care for it. They also assured us the chick would indeed be able to fledge from there and fly from the ground, but also warned us that kites are notoriously slow learners and it could take two weeks or more for the chick to figure things out.

A big picture window in the front of our home faces west, overlooking two big oak trees in the front lawn. Kyle’s temporary “digs” were just around the corner out-of-sight, but we could see its parents constantly coming and going all day, every day, continuously bring snacks. We put a trail camera on one tree and got some&nbsp;nice pictures of an adult bringing food, and of Kyle strutting and exercising its wings. Joyce checked on Kyle most evenings at dusk, always finding it snoozing in its flower pot shelter.

Fast forward to last Thursday morning. Joyce left early to swim at the YMCA, and when I checked on Kyle a little later, it was nowhere to be found. When Joyce got home, she told me Kyle was standing at the edge of the flower garden when she left, looking all proud and grownup, with lots of new feathers and all, and she just had the feeling today was the day Kyle would take to the air and we would never see it again. Later that day, we observed a mature kite coming and going from one tree in the front yard, and sure enough, there sat Kyle peering down from the branches above, now being cared for where he belonged.

We recently lost a good church friend to cancer; Kyle was his name also. Kyle spent his entire life in a wheelchair, in a body with numerous problems, but when our Savior Jesus took him home, just like Kyle the Kite, he flew away in a new body that finally worked.

Margaret Helena Schlegel, 98, died August 18, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born July 8, 1925, in Otis, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Elsie (Schneider) Lebsack. 

&nbsp;Margaret was a graduate of Otis High School.

On October 6, 1946, she married Samuel Schlegel in Otis, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 2, 2006.

A lifetime Otis resident Margaret was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She kept a meticulous lawn and loved working in her flower garden, no weed stood a chance in her yard.

She is survived by a daughter, Connie Galusha of Otis; a sister, Katherine Esser of Madison, Wisconsin; and a great-granddaughter, Adison Galusha of Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Donald W. Schlegel, grandson, David Galusha, brother, Harold Lebsack, and sisters, Sonia Nuss and Ione Leatherman.

Per Margaret’s wishes her body has been willed to the University of Kansas School of Medicine for research. Cremation will then take place and a burial will be at a later date in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Otis, Kansas.

Thomas “Tom” Edward Hickert, 71, of Norton, KS passed away August 15, 2023 at the Phillips County Hospital. He was born October 19, 1951 in Norton to Quinten Joseph and Patricia Caroline Hickert.

Tom grew up in Clayton, KS and was a 1969 graduate of Jennings High School. He then went on to graduate from Northwest Kansas Technical College in 1971. 

After college, he worked at an auto body shop and then was a local farm hand for years until going to work at Haliburton for about 10 years. Tom then went to work for Kyle Railroad until his retirement. 

In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering with lawnmowers, gardening, and fishing. He loved his family and especially loved his dogs; they were his best friends.

Tom is survived by his siblings Jean Ann (Robert) Bowman of Norton, Rose (Butch) Beal of Smithville, MO, Tim (Dar) Hickert of Hays, KS, Linette (Ernie) Klaus of Hays, KS, Patty (John) Gall of Norton; sister-in-law Betty Hickert, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Quinten Hickert and Patricia Stephen; stepfather Harold “Red” Stephen; brother Rick Hickert, and his dogs Howie, Goldie, and Leo.

The family has chosen cremation per Tom’s wishes. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 26, 2023 from 2-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be held in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in New Almelo.

Tom Hickert

Leading the student government this year is a remarkable student with deep family roots at Fort Hays State University – Ella Burrows. Ella hails from Satanta, a quaint town in southwest Kansas with a population of 1,000.

Ella is a fourth-generation Tiger, with her great Aunt Mabel Lacey being an esteemed faculty member at FHSU in the 1920s. Her grandfather, Bob Meier, also taught at FHSU for more than four decades, and her parents and grandparents graduated from FHSU. Ella’s family has a long-standing connection with FHSU, with her grandparents and parents meeting at the university. It’s a special place for Ella and her family.

The students on our campus hail from diverse backgrounds, each with unique stories, hopes, and dreams. From the very first day, our faculty and staff invest in each student, taking the time to make individual connections, instill confidence, and nurture them toward success. For Ella, that person is a political science faculty member, Wendy Rohleder-Sook.

“Professor Rohleder-Sook and I share similar backgrounds. She has been an exemplary role model for me at FHSU,” Ella said. “Thanks to FHSU’s small class sizes, I have enjoyed getting to know Professor Rohleder-Sook and several other faculty members with whom I share a close bond.”

When asked why she chose Fort Hays State, Ella speaks of her family tradition and the university’s affordability. She felt at home when she stepped on campus and knew this was where she wanted to be. She was also impressed by the incredible scholarships provided by the university, allowing her to graduate debt-free before taking on law school loans.

Ella dreams of a future where she can do educational policy work as a university general counsel or lobbyist. She is beginning her junior year as a political science major. She has also included certificates in legal studies and community development as elements in her academic experience. Ella’s studies in community development have been helpful as she leads the Student Government Association, empowering FHSU students to use their voices and be active and engaged members of their community.

Ella’s SGA presidential goals for 23-24 center on empowering students under a theme of sustainability and campus projects like recycling and The Green Event. The latter is an event that is organized in an environmentally friendly manner, taking into consideration the impact on the environment and minimizing waste. She also plans to make programming on campus more accessible and student-centered by reaching out to diverse groups, addressing student concerns, and engaging the entire community.

“I ran for SGA president to empower FHSU students to use their voices and be active and engaged community members,” Ella said. “I am incredibly passionate about FHSU and higher education. I saw this role as an opportunity to give back to the university that means so much to me and my family!”

Reflecting on the past year, Ella expresses that a moment of pride was ensuring there would be no increase to student fees for the current academic year.

“As a strong advocate for affordability, it was a moment of immense pride to navigate the fee process and present the proposal to the Fiscal Affairs Committee of the Kansas Board of Regents.”

In addition, she had the privilege to join the Fort Hays State University Government Relations team in Washington, D.C., where our delegation had the opportunity to meet with legislators and share the remarkable impact of our beloved university.

Ella is very engaged on campus. She is a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, the Honors College, VIP Ambassadors, Young Democrats, and Pi Sigma Alpha. Pi Sigma Alpha is a national political science honor society that recognizes outstanding academic achievement in political science.

This past spring, Ella was selected as a Newman Fellow. I have enjoyed getting to know Ella this past year. She brings a lot of Tiger pride, compassion, and energy to this vital leadership role. Ella hails from Satanta, a quaint town in southwest Kansas with a population of 1,000.Ella is a fourth-generation Tiger, with her great Aunt Mabel Lacey being an esteemed faculty member at FHSU in the 1920s. Her grandfather, Bob Meier, also taught at FHSU for more than four decades, and her parents and grandparents graduated from FHSU. Ella’s family has a long-standing connection with FHSU, with her grandparents and parents meeting at the university. It’s a special place for Ella and her family.The students on our campus hail from diverse backgrounds, each with unique stories, hopes, and dreams. From the very first day, our faculty and staff invest in each student, taking the time to make individual connections, instill confidence, and nurture them toward success. For Ella, that person is a political science faculty member, Wendy Rohleder-Sook.“Professor Rohleder-Sook and I share similar backgrounds. She has been an exemplary role model for me at FHSU,” Ella said. “Thanks to FHSU’s small class sizes, I have enjoyed getting to know Professor Rohleder-Sook and several other faculty members with whom I share a close bond.”When asked why she chose Fort Hays State, Ella speaks of her family tradition and the university’s affordability. She felt at home when she stepped on campus and knew this was where she wanted to be. She was also impressed by the incredible scholarships provided by the university, allowing her to graduate debt-free before taking on law school loans.Ella dreams of a future where she can do educational policy work as a university general counsel or lobbyist. She is beginning her junior year as a political science major. She has also included certificates in legal studies and community development as elements in her academic experience. Ella’s studies in community development have been helpful as she leads the Student Government Association, empowering FHSU students to use their voices and be active and engaged members of their community.Ella’s SGA presidential goals for 23-24 center on empowering students under a theme of sustainability and campus projects like recycling and The Green Event. The latter is an event that is organized in an environmentally friendly manner, taking into consideration the impact on the environment and minimizing waste. She also plans to make programming on campus more accessible and student-centered by reaching out to diverse groups, addressing student concerns, and engaging the entire community.“I ran for SGA president to empower FHSU students to use their voices and be active and engaged community members,” Ella said. “I am incredibly passionate about FHSU and higher education. Heart of a Tiger: Family ties to FHSU run deep in rural Kansas

NEW YORK (AP) —The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate climbed this week to its highest level in more than 20 years, grim news for would-be homebuyers already challenged by a housing market that remains competitive due to a dearth of homes for sale.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the average rate on the benchmark 30-year home loan rose to 7.09% from 6.96% last week. A year ago, the rate averaged 5.13%.

It’s the fourth consecutive weekly increase for the average rate and the highest since early April 2002, when it averaged 7.13%. The last time the average rate was above 7% was last November, when it stood at 7.08%.

High rates can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, limiting how much they can afford in a market already unaffordable to many Americans.

“With prices even higher than they were a year ago in many markets, crossing the 7% mortgage rate threshold again could be what sets in motion a major contraction in the housing market this fall,” said Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist for Bright MLS.

The latest increase in rates follows a sharp uptick in the 10-year Treasury yield, which has been above 4% this month and climbing. The yield, which lenders use to price rates on mortgages and other loans, touched its highest level since October on Thursday morning, and it’s close to where it was in 2007.

The yield has been rising as bond traders react to more reports showing the U.S. economy remains remarkably resilient, which could keep upward pressure on inflation, giving the Federal Reserve reason to keep interest rates higher for longer.

“The economy continues to do better than expected and the 10-year Treasury yield has moved up, causing mortgage rates to climb,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. “Demand has been impacted by affordability headwinds, but low inventory remains the root cause of stalling home sales.”

High inflation drove the Federal Reserve to raise its benchmark interest rate 11 times since March 2022, lifting the fed funds rate to the highest level in 22 years.

Mortgage rates don’t necessarily mirror the Fed’s rate increases, but tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note. Investors’ expectations for future inflation, global demand for U.S. Treasurys and what the Fed does with interest rates can influence rates on home loans.

The average rate on a 30-year mortgage remains more than double what it was two years ago, when it was just 2.86%. Those ultra-low rates spurred a wave of home sales and refinancing. The sharply higher rates now are contributing to a dearth of available homes, as homeowners who locked in those lower borrowing costs two years ago are now reluctant to sell and jump into a higher rate on a new property.

The lack of housing supply is also a big reason&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/housing-home-sales-real-estate-home-prices-1cab95227f68f2acd36919e6f4594d45">home sales are down 23% through the first half of this year.</a>

The average rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular with those refinancing their homes, rose to 6.46% from 6.34% last week. A year ago, it averaged 4.55%, Freddie Mac said.

TRIBUNE - Leroy Harold Mai, age 87, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He was born to Emanuel and Madeline Bohl Mai in Greeley County on February 18, 1936. He was a lifelong member of the community.

On October 25, 1976, he married Norma Jean Parker in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She survives.

Marcia Lynn “Marcy” Wagner, 71, Palco, Kansas, died Monday, August 14, 2023 at HaysMed.

She was born October 23, 1951 in Anderson, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Gloria (Ikast) Wagner.&nbsp; 

Marcy was a graduate of Palco High School, Fort Hays State University, and Southwestern College of Professional Studies where she earned a master of education Degree.&nbsp; 

Miss Wagner taught elementary school for 42 years, first in Smith Center and then in Palco.&nbsp; Marcy believed, “teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”&nbsp; Inspired by their aunt, two of Marcy’s nieces and a nephew are now teachers and carry on her legacy.&nbsp; After retiring from teaching, Marcy served as the city clerk for the City of Palco.

Marcy was a member of Red Line Church of God, where her father Paul once served as pastor.&nbsp; Marcy was a prolific quilter and loved spending time with her sewing friends.&nbsp; Additionally, she enjoyed reading, watching Hallmark movies, sharing Danish traditions, and playing games; her favorite was Rummikub.

Marcy is survived by her sister, Alesia Prichard of Las Vegas, NV and brother, Kevin (Tama) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; The loves of her life were her nieces and nephews, Jeremy (Keri) Prichard of Cheyenne, WY, Ariane (Jim) McCracken of Las Vegas, NV, Adam (Emily) Prichard of Watertown, MA, Katherine (Corey) Sanders, of Kansas City, MO, and Mitchell (Heather) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; She was also Great Aunt Marcy to a dozen of the brightest and most adorable great nieces and nephews.&nbsp; The family would also like to recognize Jane, Marlys, Johni, and all her dear friends for their ongoing care and support.&nbsp;

NORTON - The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work this week to resurface a portion of U.S. 83 in Thomas County.

Project activity will include milling and overlay on approximately 11.5 miles of pavement, starting at the U.S. 24 junction and extending northeast to the Sheridan County line. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone and guided by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.

KDOT expects the project to be complete in late October, conditions permitting.

McCormick Excavation and Paving of Stratton, Colorado, is the primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $4.5 million.

Barbara “Joyce” Barnard, 83, died August 15, 2023, at Smokey Hill Health and Rehabilitation, Salina, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born August 22, 1939, at the family home in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of William “Harold” and Willena Maurine (Molt) Hosselston. &nbsp;

Joyce graduated from Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Illinois in 1957.

On October 13, 1956, she married David Paul “Pete” Barnard in Johnsonville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2014.

Pete and Joyce moved to Hoisington in the early 70s and she went to work for the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. &nbsp;Joyce was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. She enjoyed fishing trips with the family and will always be remembered by her family as a great cook, especially her homemade bread and pies. &nbsp;

Survivors include her four children, Kim Landers and husband Eric of Hoisington; Bryan Barnard and wife Diana of Pratt, Brad Barnard and wife Laura of Hoisington, and Kara Gale and husband Cory of Winfield; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three-year-old son, Ricky Barnard, sister, Virginia Cable, and brother, Gene Hosselton.&nbsp;

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday with family to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2023, at Hoisington City Cemetery, with Ron Bailey presiding.

SEDGWICk COUNTY—A Kansas man accused in a violent, sword attack and later an attack on jail deputies entered a plea in the cases on Monday.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=448582">James E. Brown, 58</a>, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, animal cruelty and aggravated domestic battery charges for the sword incident, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office.

In March of 2021 police arrested Brown&nbsp; a verbal disturbance with his girlfriend that turned violent, according to police. He grabbed a five to six-foot sword during the disturbance, struck the 41-year-old woman multiple times and stabbed her dog multiple times.  Investigators also learned the woman had been strangled.&nbsp;She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of severe injuries 

On Sept. 8, 2021, two corporals and a deputy were escorting Brown to his cell at the Sedgwick County Detention Center when he produced a metal shank and swung it at the deputies, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.

A struggle ensued between the deputies and Brown in an effort to control the metal shank and end the assault. Once Brown was restrained, he was evaluated by clinic staff and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Brown was later returned to the Detention Facility. Two of the deputies involved sustained injuries to their hands, according to Blick. On Monday, Brown&nbsp; pled guilty to aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal threat and traffic in contraband in a correctional institution, according to the district attorney's office.

Brown&nbsp; is schedled for sentencing in October.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The University of Kansas and Kansas Athletics on Tuesday announced the latest plans for the transformational Gateway District, which will feature a reimagined David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, a new conference center and multi-use facilities that will enable year-round use and drive economic development in Lawrence. Plans for the district also include a combination of new retail, dining and other amenities that will drive student recruitment and enhance the campus experience for KU students and employees.

The latest plans for the district – including the first architectural renderings of the project—were shared Tuesday afternoon at an event at the Jayhawk Welcome Center, hosted by Chancellor Douglas Girod, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff and other members of the University community.

The Gateway District is a once-in-a-generation project to transform our campus and drive economic development throughout the region. Specifically, this project will create exciting new amenities for students, employees and visitors while providing Kansas Football the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level.

The project will be completed in a multi-phased approach. The first phase of the project will include additional renovations to, and expansion of, Anderson Family Football Complex, the training hub for Kansas Football. Additionally, the first phase will include the construction of new southwest, west and north sides of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, as well as a new conference center on the north end.

Construction on the first phase will begin at the conclusion of the 2023 football season, and will be completed by the beginning of the 2025 season. Kansas Football will continue to play at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium during construction and will have reduced capacity for the 2024 season. Fans are encouraged to purchase season tickets for the 2023 season to have the opportunity to be in the stadium for the 2024 season.

The project will be primarily funded by private funds from donors and no tuition dollars or state general funds will be used. Kansas Athletics has set an initial fundraising goal of $300 million for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse capital projects, which is currently under construction. A total of $165 million in gifts and commitments have been secured, including $125 million since the project was announced last October. This represents unprecedented and record-shattering fundraising results, but additional support will be needed in order to fulfill the full vision.

Funding for the project will also include $35 million in ARPA funds appropriated to KU by the 2022 Kansas legislature, as well as up to $50 million through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s University Challenge Grant program. These funds will help fund the aspects of the Gateway District that will drive economic development, including the conference center and multi-use spaces. Additional funds may come from bonds issued by Kansas Athletics, the debt from which would be repaid from new revenue streams generated by the stadium.

“The cumulative impact of a world-class football operations complex and one of the finest game day venues in the country catapults Kansas Football, and our entire athletics program, into this critical next chapter. We have a proud history, but this unprecedented investment makes a powerful statement about an even brighter future and provides far-reaching impact for our university community, fans and football program. I am grateful for the leadership of Chancellor Girod and the visionary donors who have propelled this generational project forward.”

Future phases of the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will focus on the south and east portions of the stadium, as well as development of multi-use facilities to be used throughout the year to generate revenue for academic programming and student success. Although in the early stages of planning, the multi-use facilities will include a mix of amenities that further boost economic development in the area and advance the university’s academic mission, such as arts and entertaining, dining, retail, office spaces and lodging.

The Gateway District, including the upgrades to the Anderson Family Football Complex and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, will create a best-in-class experience for student-athletes, fans and supporters. The first phase of upgrades to Anderson was completed earlier this month when Kansas Football unveiled a new locker room and weight room.

The renovations to the Anderson Family Complex, to be completed as part of the first phase of the project, will equip the building with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center that will feature new hydrotherapy pools, cryotherapy chambers and infrared light therapy equipment. The building, which will be expanded north to connect to the stadium, will also have a new 2,300-square foot player lounge with a nutrition and fuel bar and will have nutrition fueling stations throughout the facility.

Plans are also in place for a 1,200-square foot state-of-the-art photo/video/audio content studio and a 2,400-square foot in-house student-services center with dedicated study rooms and player development and academic support facilities. The team will also have a 180-seat team meeting room with full view into David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. In addition, the facility will be equipped with a 2,400-square foot virtual practice walkthrough room with a video wall that can be combined with the new lobby of the building to create 5,500-square feet worth of multi-functional event space.

The reconceptualized northern entrance to campus will undoubtedly help in economic growth for the city of Lawrence and the University of Kansas. The mixed-use development is projected to amount to $2.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced spending and $1.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced earnings, while supporting an estimated 720 jobs. Construction of the mixed-use development will create an additional 670 temporary jobs, $2.2 million in state sales tax and $2.4 million in state personal income tax. An estimated 500,000 prospective students and guests who visit the University of Kansas each year would utilize and benefit from the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will create an unprecedented fan experience in Lawrence with amenities suited for all fans. The new seating bowl will bring fans closer to game action with the first row of seating four feet higher off the ground. On top of improved accessible seating and sight lines, there will be new chairback seating in the west and north seating areas and a videoboard that will be approximately two-and-a-half times larger and 60-feet closer to the field. There will be a 50 percent increase in area per seat and 50 percent more leg room throughout the stadium. Fans can also expect approximately 2,300 club seats in three different club spaces and unique social zones, along with suites 80 feet closer to the field. On the concourses, fans can expect four-times more food and beverage offerings and at least 1.5 times more restrooms.

Local design firms HNTB and Multistudio have taken the design lead on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. HNTB, headquartered in Kansas City, is a national leader in sports architecture and has been the lead designer for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California and several other projects from coast to coast. KU has also partnered with Turner Construction Company as the construction manager for the project. Turner was named the No. 1 construction manager in the United States by Engineering News-Record and the No. 3 sports builder in the nation. Floy Ann Lay was born on October 22, 1943, to Ninuel Blevins and Helen Lola (Newman) Lay in Fallbrook, Calif. On August 4, 2023, Floy went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Her faith in Christ is what helped her make it through life’s ups and downs. 

Floy Ann married Larry J. Holbrook in 1960, and they were blessed with three daughters: Laura, Diane, and Katy. In 1969, Floy Ann and Buster McKnight were blessed with a daughter whom she gave her mother’s middle name, Lola.

In 1972, Floy Ann married Joseph Dale Pettit. Their first home was in Beaumont, Calif. until they purchased property in Yucca Valley, Calif. They built their home themselves, one board at a time, and spent nearly 50 years there until her husband’s passing. Between them, they had nine children.

Floy Ann worked as a nurse aide in Yucca Valley. 

She also worked with her husband, painting and doing home repairs. Her hobbies included watercolor painting, sewing, and creating costumes for her husband to wear when he played guitar and sang at schools and libraries. Floy Ann also enjoyed cooking—she grilled the world’s best BBQ ribs! But her greatest joy came from just being our mom.

There was never a time you would leave her home hungry. If she knew of someone in need of anything—from a shoulder to cry on, to a good laugh—she was always there for them. Mom had a green thumb and could grow anything. She loved living in the high desert and enjoyed the plants and wildlife native to that area.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Stockton, Kansas to be close to the majority of her children who call the state home. Eventually she moved to Dawson Place in Hill City, Kansas.

Floy Ann is survived by her four daughters: Laura (Rick) Murray of La Crosse, Kansas; Kate (Darin) Terry of Woodston, Kansas; Diane Holbrook, also of Woodston; and Lola (William) Reese of Caldwell, Idaho. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Daniel Murray, Kim Blunt, Travis Reese, Chris (Jenny) Murray, Kelly (Dave) Stephen, Christina Hays, David (Tera) Murray, Dusty Terry, Markus McKnight, and Matthew (Chelsea) Terry. Her surviving loved ones also include 24 great-grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Just a few of the loved ones waiting for her on the other side include her husband, parents, one granddaughter, three nephews, one niece, one stepson, one stepdaughter, three brothers and three sisters.

Floy Ann will be laid to rest next to her husband on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the Stockton City Cemetery.

Holbrook in 1960, and they were blessed with three daughters: Laura, Diane, and Katy. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in a Reno County murder case did not return a verdict on that count after deliberating for several days.

According to Reno County District Attorney Thomas Stanton, the case against Sandral Wade&nbsp;went to the jury last Wednesday afternoon. The jury deliberated until Monday morning.

The jury deadlocked on the first three counts including first degree murder of Orlando Gipson, attempted first degree murder of Landre Bowie and aggravated robbery using a deadly weapon, found the defendant not guilty of aggravated robbery - infliction of bodily harm, and guilty of criminal possession of a firearm.

In October 2021, Wade was arrested in connection with an early morning shooting in the 1500 block of West 12th Avenue in Hutchinson. Officers arrived at the scene and found Landre Bowie laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transferred to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and survived. Officers then located Gipson in the front yard of a nearby residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Bowie testified during a preliminary hearing that Wade was the person who shot him before he crawled out into the street where police who were in the area assisted him. He also told detectives that he could hear Gibson shouting “don’t shoot me.”

A co-defendant Robert Lagrange testified that he saw Wade shoot the two men. He also said that Wade tried to give him a cell phone which he threw in the trash. The phone belonged to Bowie. Lagrange also said that he helped hide Wade at his house for two days before police found him hiding in a closet. 

Stanton said the counts upon which the jury deadlocked will be retried on a future date. No sentencing date on the firearm count was given in Stanton's email to Hutch Post.

Gerald E. “Jerry” Wiechman, age 94, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 9, 1928, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, the son of John and Hilda Koch Wiechman.&nbsp; 

A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 1929, he moved with his family from Sedgwick County, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm for miles north of Scott City.&nbsp; He was a farmer and stockman.&nbsp;

Jerry, as he was best known, attended schools in Scott County, graduating with the class of 1946.&nbsp; 

Following graduation, Jerry became engaged in farming with his father.&nbsp; He became a very aggressive farmer, introducing many new practices both in farming and the cattle business, one of which was the introduction of high-moisture corn as cattle feed to Scott County and Kansas.

Jerry was active in his church serving numerous positions.&nbsp; He also served on the Lutheran Hospital Board, Scott County and Kansas Livestock Association, charter member of the Scott COOP, and served as a board member and president of Western Kansas Groundwater Management, Scott County Soil Conservation, Park Lane Nursing Home board, and alongside his wife Joyce, served as chairman of the All-School Reunion Committees in 1980, 1990 and 1995, and Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3110.

Jerry was an adventurous sort.&nbsp; He sneaked a parental signature from his mother to play football in high school, knowing full well that his dad would say no.&nbsp; He never got over his love for football and got to relive it when his grandson, Erik was on the varsity team.

As a senior in high school, he was a member of the SCHS Flying Club where he achieved a solo license.&nbsp; 

His favorite hobby, however, was probably his work.&nbsp; He took great pride in growing beautiful crops and marketing good cattle.&nbsp; It was rumored that Jerry and his brother Donnie (with whom he partnered for many years) had the straightest rows in Scott County.&nbsp; In 1958 he was the winner of the 100 Bushel Milo Club, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and was the “Outstanding Young Farmer” of Scott County in 1961.&nbsp; His farm became a frequent stop for governors and foreign dignitaries.&nbsp; He served as a mentor for many young men who worked for him as summer jobs.
