SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on child sex allegations.

On October 19, 2023, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division conducted an investigation into child sex crimes, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.

Deputies arrested 39-year-old Craig H. Miller, 39, of Topeka and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of attempted electronic solicitation of a child, attempted indecent liberties with a child, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kansas man accused of child sex and drug crimes

James Dennis “Jim” Riordan, age 72 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;Jim was born on February 12, 1951 at Detroit, Michigan to John and Alta Lee Riordan, and grew up in South Lyon, Michigan. 

&nbsp;Jim attended college at the University of Idaho, where he also was on the University of Idaho Vandals Football Team. &nbsp;He later worked as a lumberjack in Idaho for a number of years prior to coming to Great Bend, Kansas. Jim worked in the Oilfield for over 50 years as a driller for LD Davis Drilling, Duke Drilling, and Val Energy and as a casing crew operator for Murray Casing, all of Great Bend. &nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Ginger Richter on November 25, 1978 at Great Bend, Kansas. Jim loved his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, football, and was a lover of animals.

Survivors include his wife, Ginger Riordan of Great Bend; two sons: &nbsp;Evan Riordan (and Kelly Regan) of Great Bend and Hunter Riordan (and Kestrel Barnes) of Lawrence, Kansas; one daughter, Erin Riordan of Great Bend; 10 nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Mocha. &nbsp;

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and all five of his siblings: &nbsp;John Riordan, Janet Brown, Barb Blandin, Patrick Riordan, and Joe Riordan.

Cremation has been chosen and no services or viewing are planned at this time. 

&nbsp;The family requests that Memorial Contributions be directed to the Golden Belt Humane Society at Great Bend, Kansas to honor his love of animals.

LARNED – Tony Martinez, 63, passed away October 22, 2023 in Wichita, KS.

He was born October 13, 1960 in San Antonio, TX, the son of Rodolfo Martinez, Sr. and Marylou Mendez. He was a longtime resident of Larned, KS, meeting Tracy in 2000 and the couple married on December 31, 2005.&nbsp;

They spent more than two decades together, raising their blended family, starting with Tony’s daughter, Brandi and Tracy’s niece, Tiasha, as well as enjoying weekend visits from Tony’s son, Anthony, and daughter Esperanza. They were soon joined by the couple’s daughter Nydia, and sons Andres and Aemilio. &nbsp;

Tony knew no stranger. He was an extremely laid-back back and friendly person. He welcomed everyone like family to his home. He would do anything to help if he could. &nbsp;Familia was everything to him, and he helped take care of many nieces and nephews, over the years. He liked to help out his mother-in-law by mowing her big yard, or taking her to visit her mother in Hutchinson. Conversations had (in Spanish, of course) by Tony, Abby and Grandma Basilia were always lively and filled with laughter. &nbsp; &nbsp;

He relished telling stories about his life in San Antonio. A kid at heart, he often spent his time outdoors, playing basketball and soccer with his kids. Or, he could be spotted out exploring, looking for treasures with his metal detector. At home, the couch was Tony’s comfort spot, where he enjoyed watching crime shows, working on Sudoku Puzzles, and listening to Spanish Music. He also enjoyed watching movies. “Over the Top” was an all-time favorite for him and his son, Jacob.&nbsp;

At a young age, Tony would travel with his family to Wisconsin and help them with seasonal work. As he got older he lived in Plainview, Texas, working on oil rigs and at meat packing plants. Later, he moved closer to his mother in Great Bend, KS, to be close to his disabled brother. He was employed by Sunflower Diversified Services and Pathways a total of 13 years in Great Bend. He then worked at Larned State Hospital for 18 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Tracy, Larned; his children Emily Soto, Plainview, TX; Brandi Martinez (Jesus Ramirez), Macksville, KS; Tiasha Perez, Houston TX; &nbsp;Anthony Martinez (Hailey Garman), Littlestown, PA; Esperanza Palmer (Dillion Schmidt), Hays, KS; Daughter Nydia, Sons Andres and Aemilio Martinez, all of Larned; grandchildren, Luna, Mateo and Leo; &nbsp;brothers, Salvador (Edna) Martinez, Plainview, TX; Augie (Sherry) Martinez, Spokane WA; Javier Martinez, Altus OK; Steve (Dora) Martinez, Hollis OK; Larry (Luz Maria)&nbsp;Martinez, Amarillo TX; Noel Martinez, Great Bend, KS; sister Ruby (Adam) Perez, Lakin, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss him dearly. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jacob Soto, and two brothers, Rodolfo Martinez Jr, and David Martinez.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Mike Barton presiding. &nbsp;Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. &nbsp;

Longtime Goodland resident, Sharon L. David, age 80, passed away Friday, October 20, 2023 in Thornton, Colorado. Sharon was born February 25, 1943 to Francis Arthur and Mary Elizabeth (Newachek) David in Denver, Colorado. 

They moved to Goodland in 1948, where Sharon grew up and went to school, graduating from Goodland High School in 1961.

Sharon worked as an insurance clerk at Northwest Kansas Medical Center and Dr. Kenneth D. Austin for 15 years. She was a secretary for Cole Auction and Real Estate for a little over 17 years, retiring in 2001.&nbsp;

In her younger years, Sharon enjoyed traveling for bowling and collecting salt and pepper shakers and most of all looking after and spending time with her family and friends. She spent her time helping people with whatever they needed. She worked as a secretary for Harrison Reality, Dr. Swinehart, Bateman Funeral Home and Serendipity Flower Shop until the present.&nbsp;

Sharon is survived by her son Alan (Teresa) David of Goodland; granddaughters Nicole Kinen of Wray, CO and Lexi (Bret) Mangan of Goodland; grandson Josh David of Goodland; great-grandchildren Kinley and Landree Kinen and Addisyn and Rhett Mangan; sister Judy (Robert) McKnight; nieces, nephews and many more family and friends.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents Francis and Mary, grandparents, brother Richard and sister Marylyn Engel. &nbsp;

Thomas LeRoy Colby, age 63, of Kanorado, passed away on October 5, 2023. Tom was born March 2, 1960 to Donald and Bernadine (Griess) Colby in Smith Center, Kansas. 

He attended Goodland High School and the Northwest Kansas Technical College auto mechanics program. 

On May 27, 1978 he married Tammy Sue Cochran in Goodland. To this union Justin, Jessica and Joshua were born. 

Tom worked as a mechanic for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Goodland. He enjoyed working on cars, fishing, being the racetrack promoter and he dearly loved spending time with his family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents and grandparents and infant sister Marlene. 

Tom is survived by his wife Tammy of Kanorado; sons Justin (Rosa) and Joshua (Lisa) of Goodland; daughter Jessica (Matthew) Phillippi of Kanorado; sister Barb (Jett) Fromholtz of St. Francis, KS; brother Ricky (Brenda) Colby of Virginia; stepsisters Linda (Roy) Feldt and Tina (Nathan) Pennell; stepbrother Michael (Melissa) Johnson; grandchildren Lexus, Rayce, Jason and Jaxon; and many more family and friends.

Tamara Kay Rinehart

Don Leon Brooks, son of Frank and Velma (Diggins) Brooks, was born February 27, 1938 at the hospital in Goodland, Kansas and died at his home in Norton on October 19, 2023 at the age of 85.

He spent his early years on the family farm in Brewster. 

He attended grade school and part of high school in Brewster before the family moved to Almena and later, Densmore where he graduated with the class of 1956.

He joined the Army National Guard while still in high school. His unit was called for active duty in the fall of 1961 during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed at Fort Riley where they remained for just under a year.

Don married Aleta Guthrie on January 17, 1966 at the Norton Christian Church. The couple lived all of their married life in Norton where they raised their two girls. They were about to celebrate their 54th anniversary when Aleta passed away of cancer in 2020.

Don loved moving dirt more than anything in the world. He was always outdoors, and his mother said even as a toddler he spent most of his playtime pushing dirt around the family's yard. His sister said he sometimes used a piece of wood as a blade. He started his career in dirt construction right after high school when he went to work for Bud Gregory. He started his own dirt work company in the late '60s and built terraces, roads, ponds, and dams all over Norton County and the surrounding area for close to 30 years.

In 1992, Don went to work for the Norton County Road and Bridge Department as a motor grader operator. He took pride in well-graded roads and enjoyed the camaraderie of his coworkers until his retirement in 2012.

He valued his friendships and looked forward to beers and scuttlebutt every day after work at the pool hall or the Eagles Lodge. He planted and raised a vegetable garden every spring and summer. He especially enjoyed growing an heirloom tomato called Sioux because that was a variety his mother grew.

He is survived by two daughters, Laura Leigh Brooks, Norton and Amy Brooks Couch and husband Rob Couch, Parker, Colorado; a grandson, Brewer Guthrie Couch; a granddaughter, Julia Faith Couch; and one sister, Wava McIntyre, Rozel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and one sister, Carol Case Daniels.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at the funeral home.

 </figure>February 27, 1938 - October 19, 2023Don Leon Brooks, son of Frank and Velma (Diggins) Brooks, was born February 27, 1938 at the hospital in Goodland, Kansas and died at his home in Norton on October 19, 2023 at the age of 85.He spent his early years on the family farm in Brewster. He attended grade school and part of high school in Brewster before the family moved to Almena and later, Densmore where he graduated with the class of 1956.He joined the Army National Guard while still in high school. His unit was called for active duty in the fall of 1961 during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed at Fort Riley where they remained for just under a year.Don married Aleta Guthrie on January 17, 1966 at the Norton Christian Church. The couple lived all of their married life in Norton where they raised their two girls. They were about to celebrate their 54th anniversary when Aleta passed away of cancer in 2020.Don loved moving dirt more than anything in the world. He was always outdoors, and his mother said even as a toddler he spent most of his playtime pushing dirt around the family's yard. His sister said he sometimes used a piece of wood as a blade. He started his career in dirt construction right after high school when he went to work for Bud Gregory. He started his own dirt work company in the late '60s and built terraces, roads, ponds, and dams all over Norton County and the surrounding area for close to 30 years.In 1992, Don went to work for the Norton County Road and Bridge Department as a motor grader operator. He took pride in well-graded roads and enjoyed the camaraderie of his coworkers until his retirement in 2012.He valued his friendships and looked forward to beers and scuttlebutt every day after work at the pool hall or the Eagles Lodge. He planted and raised a vegetable garden every spring and summer. Cheryl Ann Votapka, age 79, passed away on October 19, 2023, in Oberlin, Kansas. Cheryl was born on June 14, 1944, to Everett and Odene (Bradley) Koehler in Oberlin.

Cheryl was raised in Oberlin and graduated from Decatur Community Junior/Senior High School in 1962. After high school, Cheryl studied at Fort Hays State University. 

She married Dale Votapka on August 8, 1965. Together they raised three daughters, Beth, Pamela, and Luanne.

Cheryl was a homemaker and also served as an EMT, election worker, swim instructor, and volunteer at the Decatur County Museum. She loved quilting, sewing, baking, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her three daughters: Beth, Pamela (and her husband, Eric) Huerter, and Luanne (and her husband, Rick) Rowlison; grandchildren: Matthew, Kelly, Finnegan, Maxwell, Jack, Joshua, Jonathan, and Jonah. 

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Odene and her husband, Dale.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, at the Oberlin Cemetery at 9:00 a..m. A celebration of life is planned for June 15, 2024. 

Memorial contributions may be made out to the Decatur County Museum.

Rosalie P. (Appelhans) Heier, 87, of Hoxie, KS, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Sheridan County Long Term Care. She was born the eighth of ten children, in St. Peter, on August 20, 1936, to Joseph J. and Katherine (Richmeier) Appelhans. 

At the young age of 17, while at a wedding she met a handsome man, Jacob J. Heier, whom she married on May 3, 1954, in St. Peter.&nbsp;

Jake and Rosie enjoyed going to dances, they were members of the Sunflower Polka Club which kept them busy on the weekends. They led many wedding marches for family and friends. She was a member of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church and served on the sodality committee.

Rosie was an excellent cook and worked as a lunch lady for Hoxie school district. Losing her mother at 16, created a strong bond between her and her siblings. Throughout the years, they gathered and hosted their own birthday celebrations. It got loud around the table with their laughter while they played cards and wahoo. 

In her spare time, she grew an exceptional garden, canned, sewed and crocheted each one of her grandchildren an afghan blanket for their high school graduation and many doilies for gifts. Family was immensely important to Rosie, she made many memories with her grandchildren, allowing them to win at uno games, trouble, and dominos. 

Hoxie fair time was a highlight for Rosie because her family always found a way to get together. Jake and Rosie volunteered their time at the scrambler for many years. They always made sure their grandchildren had an extra-long ride.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jake; parents; infant children, Robert and Carol; sisters, Eleanor Dinkel, Mary Evers, Sister Gilberta Appelhans, Clara Dinkel, Louella Zerr; brothers, Alfred Appelhans, Edwin Appelhans, Kenneth Appelhans, and Ralph Appelhans; grandson Lane Vickers; and infant granddaughter.

Left to mourn her passing, son, Richard Heier and wife Glenda; daughter, Debra Vickers and husband Kelly, all of Hoxie, Norma LeHew, of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Aimee Vickers, Kelsi Bartlett (Adam), Jamie Hoyt (Chris), Trisha Hoover, Jordan Vickers (Erika), Andrew Hoover, Kara Scott (Bronson), and Corey Heier; great-grandchildren, Taelynn, Eislee and McKinley Scott, Lyla Vang, Grayson, Jovie, Emery and Julian Bartlett, Alexa Vickers, Kaitlin and Lennan Hoyt, Jameson Hoover; sisters-in-law; Darlene Appelhans and Doris Appelhans.

Longtime Kanorado, KS resident, Donald Wayne Daub, III, 43, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at his home in Kanorado.

Don was born on August 19, 1980 in Boulder, CO to Donald Wayne and Carolyn Sue (Kleiboeker) Daub, Jr.&nbsp; He was one of three children.&nbsp; He lived in McCook, NE where he attended school.

He later met and married Delores Sportsman on February 29, 2020.&nbsp; They had two children; Adonica Daub and Donald Daub, IV.&nbsp; 

Don worked as a truck driver for Nutrien Ag for many years.&nbsp; He was also on the Kanorado Volunteer Fire Department for 16 years and he took pride in his jobs.&nbsp; He was very active in his community, and he was a Jack of all trades.&nbsp; He could be very stubborn and ornery; however, he always strived to see the best in everyone.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting.&nbsp; He was very family-oriented and lived for his family and friends and enjoyed spending weekends having a BBQ.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his uncle William L. Krausman.

He is survived by his wife Delores and children Adonica and Donald of the home in Kanorado, his parents Donald and Carolyn Daub, Jr. of McCook, NE, his sister Sarah (Tim McMains) Daub of North Platte, NE and his brother Kenneth (Rachel) Daub of McCook, NE.

Wanda Lee Heine, 71, passed away Oct. 21, 2023, at University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend campus, Great Bend, Kan. &nbsp;She was born March 21, 1952, in Great Bend, to Ernest and Dorothy (Cobler) Doty. &nbsp;

Wanda married Ronald Lee Heine Jan. 6, 1973, in Ellinwood, Kan. &nbsp;

Wanda, a lifetime Great Bend resident, most recently worked at Salvation Army and previously worked at Dominican Sisters of Peace, Pizza Hut and Dilly's restaurant. &nbsp;Wanda had a deep affection and love for all animals, especially dogs, in particular Bucky and Bailey. &nbsp;Above all, she treasured time spent with her family, making an abundant number of special memories.

Survivors include her husband Ronald of the home; four sons, Chris Heine (Kathi), Jeff Heine (Ann), Rick Heine (Janelle), Brent Heine (Megan), all of Great Bend; one daughter, Kim Petrie (Cecil) of Newton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wanda Lee Heine

Galen Lynn Covalt, 67, passed away on October 19, 2023. He was born in Norton, KS on April 29,1956. He was the youngest of five children of Roy and Beryl Covalt. 

He married Kathy Hall Covalt on April 3, 1982, and together they had one daughter Jennifer Covalt Stinemetz.

Galen went to grade school in Studley, KS, then graduated from Hoxie High School. He proceeded to Goodland Vo Tech where he earned a degree as a farm diesel mechanic. He went on to be employed with the Studley Co-op with his father, Roy Covalt, and his brother-in-law, Robert Chadwick. He was one of the youngest propane drivers at that time. From there he went to work for the Cooper family in Hill City, as a heavy equipment operator, then taking his skills to Murfin Drilling from which he retired.

Galen was a member of the Baptist Church in Hill City, where he made many good friends. 

He enjoyed many hobbies, like fishing, you could find him on the lake enjoying competitive fishing. He spent many days hunting with friends and family. His favorite part of hunting was watching his dog Rusty hunt. He always had a story to tell related to fishing and hunting. 

He also enjoyed his morning coffee with anybody that would stop and visit at the restaurants or up at Cameron's Corner.

Galen Is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Stinemetz (Jason), sisters Beverly Haley, of Salina, Carla Chadwick (Robert), of Kansas City and Judy Connelly (Wayne), and many nieces and nephews and multiple friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Beryl Covalt and his brother Rick Covalt.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at the Studley cemetery.

 </figure>April 29, 1956 - October 19, 2023Galen Lynn Covalt, 67, passed away on October 19, 2023. He was born in Norton, KS on April 29,1956. He was the youngest of five children of Roy and Beryl Covalt. He married Kathy Hall Covalt on April 3, 1982, and together they had one daughter Jennifer Covalt Stinemetz.Galen went to grade school in Studley, KS, then graduated from Hoxie High School. He proceeded to Goodland Vo Tech where he earned a degree as a farm diesel mechanic. He went on to be employed with the Studley Co-op with his father, Roy Covalt, and his brother-in-law, Robert Chadwick. He was one of the youngest propane drivers at that time. From there he went to work for the Cooper family in Hill City, as a heavy equipment operator, then taking his skills to Murfin Drilling from which he retired.Galen was a member of the Baptist Church in Hill City, where he made many good friends. He enjoyed many hobbies, like fishing, you could find him on the lake enjoying competitive fishing. He spent many days hunting with friends and family. His favorite part of hunting was watching his dog Rusty hunt. He always had a story to tell related to fishing and hunting. &nbsp;Daryl Leo Wolf, 80, of Monument, KS, died Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the Logan County Hospital, in Oakley. He was born May 4, 1943, in rural Gove County, KS, to Fred and Mary (Merrian) Wolf. 

Daryl graduated from Grinnell High School. 

He married Jennie Keller on June 25, 1964, and to this union two sons were born. 

Daryl was a life-long farmer and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jennie; siblings, Melvin (Marlene) Wolf, Jim (Elsie) Wolf, Mary Jean (Alan) Overton and Leon Wolf; brother-in-law Jerry Kaiser.

Daryl Leo Wolf

Donald “Don” Heikes, 87, Lenora, Kansas, died October 10, 2023, in Salina, Kansas with family by his side. He was born April 21, 1936, in Norton, Kansas to Lamoine “Dick” Heikes and Opal (Pratt) Heikes.

Growing up on the family farm, Don worked hard and always made sure the chores were done before heading to school. It was a time-consuming endeavor of wrangling cattle, pigs, psycho chickens and two baby brothers. 

He graduated from Lenora High School at the tender age of 18, married his high school sweetheart Gloria Personett, April 10, 1955. 

Don and Gloria started their own family only seven miles from where he grew up. Now he and Gloria had three kids to wrangle, well the first two anyway. The youngest was good.

He began working at a local gas station but decided rather quickly that he was tired of pumping gas. One day he walked over to the Exchange Bank of Lenora and asked for a job. He was hired even though it was only to keep the sidewalk swept. His employers realized the potential in Don and sent him to banking school. Don eventually owned the bank and worked there alongside Gloria for 42 years.

Family, country, and community were very important to Don. He joined the Army National Guard as a young man and served 24 years ending with the rank of major. 

Listing everything Don Heikes did in his life would take several pages. So here are some highlights of a very busy life: past Lenora City Council, past Mayor of Lenora, member of Lenora Pride, treasurer for the United Parish Church, several banking organizations, Norton County Hospital Board, Cemetery Board for the Lenora South Cemetery, Grand Master of Odd Fellows.

Then outside of all those activities, he helped maintain the Lenora Airport (yes, Lenora had an airport), was in charge of the veterans’ flags at the local cemeteries, (with Gloria and Neva’s help) and was a member of the Audubon of Kansas Board (a wildlife conservation group).

Being a farm kid, Don respected and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bird watching. He also liked to paint, do woodworking and loved model trains. He had a wonderful singing voice and was a member of a local quartet.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Dwight Heikes and Dennis Heikes; his wife of 68 years, Goria Personett Heikes; and a son Kevin Heikes. He is survived by one son, Bryce Heikes of Mexico; one daughter Neva Heikes of Salina; and a granddaughter Serina Heikes of Kansas City.

In lieu of flowers Don wanted a memorial to the bird sanctuary he enjoyed for many years and visited often. The Lillian Rowe Wildlife Center in Gibbon, Nebraska ensures there is habitat for migrating sandhill cranes and waterfowl.

LARNED – Eugene Ernest Nusser, Sr., 70, passed away October 22, 2023, at Country Living Memory Care, Larned, Kansas.

Eugene was born March 16, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Arthur and Joyce Brocius Nusser. He grew up in Plevna, Kansas graduating from Fairfield High School before becoming a resident of Hutchinson.

&nbsp;He graduated from Hutchinson Community College with an associate degree in engineering and was employed with Master Machine Tools and AEI, Inc. as an engineer.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Hutchinson. Eugene was on the original board of directors for Club Azzurri Soccer Club where he dedicated his time to the club for the betterment of the sport and his sons.

Survivors include: two sons, Eugene Nusser Jr., Wichita and William (Katelyn) Nusser, Larned; a daughter, Heather Nusser, Knoxville, TN; a sister, Connie Nusser, Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, Landon Nusser, Reese Nusser and Kai Bowers.

Cremation has taken place. &nbsp;Private inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery of Hutchinson.

Kelly T. Jeroue, walked into heaven on October 21, 2023. He was born September 4, 1959, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Charles and Mary Ann (Mahaffy) Jeroue. &nbsp;

Kelly graduated from St. John High School in 1978, where he was active in all sports, football, track, and baseball. &nbsp;He went on to play baseball for Barton County Community College.

On October 3, 1988, he married Katherine M. Schremmer in Liberal, Kansas. Together they moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where they spent 22 years before moving back to their roots in Kansas in January of 2019. 

Kelly worked as an insurance and car salesman, a chimney sweep, and at the Amalgameted Sugar factory. &nbsp; He also enjoyed coaching his children and other children in baseball and softball and following their careers. &nbsp;Always considered quite the monkey, he excelled at his own tree trimming business, K&amp;K Tree Trimming &amp; Removal. Unfortunately, an accident placed Kelly in a wheelchair. He spent a long time in rehabilitation at the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, where his zest for life and talk were appreciated on his rounds to other patients in more traumatic care. Kelly was strong in his faith and loved to share it with others. He was a current member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Katherine Jeroue of the home, and three children, Kasey (Kayla) Jeroue of Twin Falls, Idaho, Kaleb Jeroue of Orofino, Idaho, and Kynzi Jeroue of Burley, Idaho; and his four beloved grandchildren, Carter, Parker, Peighton and Braylynn; a brother, Ken (Barbara) Jeroue of Russell; and five sisters, Barbara Gordon of Priest River, Idaho, Jody (Steve) Klepper of Great Bend, Cindy Maser of Clovis, New Mexico, Jacqueline Jeroue of Fresno, California, Tammy (Todd) Alsup of Olathe, Kansas; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Tracy Jeroue, and his parents-in-law, Jim and Kitty Schremmer.&nbsp;

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with vigil and rosary service to begin at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Warren Stecklein. Interment will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington, Kansas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court">Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;on Friday said it would indefinitely block a lower court order curbing Biden administration efforts to combat&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/social-media-biden-administration-lawsuit-injunction-6322aae981bdc5c9009babde4b31ab60">controversial social media posts</a>&nbsp;on topics including COVID-19 and election security.

The justices said they would hear arguments in a lawsuit filed by Louisiana, Missouri and other parties accusing administration officials of unconstitutionally squelching conservative points of view. The new case adds to a term already heavy with social media issues.

Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas would have rejected the emergency appeal from the Biden administration.

“At this time in the history of our country, what the Court has done, I fear, will be seen by some as giving the Government a green light to use heavy-handed tactics to skew the presentation of views on the medium that increasingly dominates the dissemination of news. That is most unfortunate,” Alito wrote in dissent.

White House communications staffers, the surgeon general, the FBI and the U.S. cybersecurity agency are among those who would have been affected by the order. The lawsuit said they were among those who coerced changes in online content on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and other media platforms.

Notably, the companies themselves are not part of the litigation.

A panel of three judges on the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled earlier that the administration had likely brought unconstitutional pressure on the media platforms. The appellate panel said officials cannot attempt to “coerce or significantly encourage” changes in online content.

The Justice Department said the appellate ruling and a much broader order issued by a federal judge in Louisiana that the appeals court narrowed were riddled with factual and legal mistakes.

“The Fifth Circuit erred in finding coercion by the White House, Surgeon General’s office, and FBI because the court did not identify any threat, implicit or explicit, of adverse consequences for noncompliance," Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote. U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocks order in social media lawsuit

Kenneth Marvin “Ken” Collins, 72, Hays, died Sunday, October 22, 2023 at HaysMed.

He was born June 23, 1951 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the son of Franklin L. and Virginia Sue (Pleasant) Collins. 

In 1970 he graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville, North Carolina and attended Rockingham Community College studying business law. 

From 1971-1974, Ken served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist with the 207th MP Company serving at Fort Riley, Kansas. 

On May 18, 1973, he was united in marriage to Janice Robben in Hays and celebrated their 50th anniversary this past May. 

Ken worked in law enforcement for 28 years with the Hays Police Department and nine years with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. 

Other memberships include Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays American Legion #173, Third Degree Knights of Columbus St. Mary’s Council #6984, Fourth Degree Bishop Cunningham Assembly, serving as a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator, Former District Deputy, State Council Program Chairman, Financial Secretary, and as a volunteer with Kansas Special Olympics. He was a Boy Scout Unit Commissioner, a little league baseball coach, an avid Royals and Chiefs fan, NASCAR enthusiast, and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife Janice of the home, three sons, Kirk Collins of Johnston, IA, Kale Collins and wife Jessica of Wichita, and Kylan Collins and wife Angela of Park City, a sister, Gwen Ford and husband Jerry of Lenoir, NC, a half-sister, Fleeta Griffith of La Grange, NC, two step-brothers, Fr. Francis Andrew Perry III and Thomas Perry, both of La Grange, NC, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wayne Robben and Lester Robben and wife Donetta, both of Hays, Jerry Robben and wife Linda, Joyce Bieker and husband Dale, and Lee Robben and wife Lisa, all of Arizona, and Lois Werth and husband Harold, Jr. of Quinter, 12 grandchildren, Kory, Grace, and Allie Collins, Kailee Robinson, Brett, Ella, Mason, Kooper, Abby, Hannah, Layton, and Kason Collins, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, Walter Griffith, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Alexia Robben.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Don Zimmerman and Fr. Nick Parker officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 p.m., the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m, and a vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorials are suggested to Divine Mercy&nbsp;Radio or to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for the Unify, Beautify, Glorify Campaign.
