Leonard Duane Wertz was born June 14, 1940, and bounded into eternity February 21, 2020.

Born to Richard and Pearl Wertz in Las Animas, Colorado, Len was the youngest of four children. His childhood stories seemed larger than life: seeing electricity come to the McClave area, bareback horse riding, nearly drowning in John Martin Reservoir, 4H and FFA exploits, and meeting President Eisenhower. After graduating from McClave High School, he went on to receive a biology degree with minors in music and horticulture from Colorado State University. He then taught chemistry in the Peace Corps in Ghana, Africa, bringing home tales of eating rat meat.

Upon returning home from Ghana, he swept Ronda Hostetler off her feet and married her on September 23, 1967. They traveled extensively across the USA and enjoyed multiple trips to Israel, Europe, and the UK. Together they raised two boys, Brad and Todd, who went on to marry and bring nine grandchildren into his life. He was a proud “Gramps," interested in praying for and promoting their adventures while watching them grow up to be productive young men and women.&nbsp; He also enjoyed two great-grandchildren who made him smile even when he could no longer pick them up, one of whom prayed with him the day before he passed into eternity.

In 1975, Len started Youth Retreat, a summer discipleship camp in the Rockies designed to teach young people the joy of knowing Jesus through Biblical instruction. He is remembered by many for charging up a mountain trail with Bible under one arm, a poster board under the other, with forty youth following close behind. As a minister in the Dunkard Brethren Church, Len conducted revival meetings all over the United States. Through these, he influenced many and was keen on motivating believers away from the status quo toward robust, faith-filled living.

His unending optimism was grounded in a firm faith in Jesus as his Savior and Lord. His seemingly tireless energy and determination to be productive amazed all who knew him. Len loved life and poured his passion into people. Over the years he was a biology teacher, florist, chemist, sales rep, and finally served as a paraeducator in the Quinter public schools. He enjoyed travel, gardening, floral design, barbershop, studying prophecy, and Youth Retreat, and taught his family to celebrate Christmas wholeheartedly. To Len, no meal was complete without dessert, his favorite part of eating.&nbsp;

On this side of eternity, he left his wife Ronda Wertz of Quinter; sons, Brad (Kirsten) and Todd (Ricki); grandsons Matthias (Cassie, Blaine, Corey, Keegan, Aiden; granddaughters Kimberly, Liberty, Autumn, and Jillian, all of Quinter; great-grandchildren Liam and Lauren Wertz of Quinter; and three siblings: Etta &nbsp; Clayton, Ivan Wertz (Edna, Wanda Lutz (John). He was preceded in death by his parents; Lawrence Clayton (brother-in-law); and granddaughter Elizabeth Wertz.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 2, 2020 at Quinter Church of the Brethren, with burial to follow at Baker Township cemetery.&nbsp;

Most gardeners think that soil tests are done only to find out what nutrients are deficient. However, it is&nbsp;just as important to know if you have adequate levels of nutrients so you don't add unneeded fertilizer.

The most basic soil test checks pH and the levels of phosphorus and potassium. Most of the lawn and&nbsp;garden soil tests that come out of our soil-testing lab show more than adequate levels of both&nbsp;phosphorus and potassium. If those nutrients are not needed, applying them is a waste of money and can be a source of pollution. In extreme cases, excess phosphorus can interfere with the&nbsp;uptake of micronutrients. So, if you haven't taken a soil test in several years, take one this spring.

Begin by taking a representative sample from a number of locations in the garden or lawn.&nbsp; Each sample&nbsp;is composed of about 8 sub-samples that go from the surface to 6 to 8 inches deep. Mix the sub-samplestogether in a clean container and select about 1 pint of soil.&nbsp;

Take the soil to your local K-State Research and Extension office to have tests done at the K-State soil-testing laboratory for a fee. A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that mayexist such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or&nbsp;damage, or shade with root competition from other plants. All of these conditions may reduce plant&nbsp;performance but cannot be evaluated by a soil test. FICK: Soil testing will save time, money

Severe winter weather is not only hard on people but can be a life and death struggle for birds. Though birds also require water and shelter, food is often the resource most lacking during cold weather. 

Many different bird food mixes are available because various species often prefer different grains. 

However, there is one seed that has more universal appeal than any other: black oil sunflower. If you are new to the bird-feeding game, make sure there is a high percentage of this seed in your mix. White proso millet is second in popularity and is the favorite of dark-eyed juncos and other sparrows as well as the red-winged blackbird.

As you become more interested in bird feeding, you may want to use more than one feeder to attract specific species of birds. Following is a list of bird species with the grains they prefer:

- Cardinal, evening grosbeak and most finch species – sunflower seeds, all types.

- Rufous-sided towhee – white proso millet.

- Dark-eyed junco – white and red proso millet, canary seed, fine cracked corn.

- Many sparrow species – white and red proso millet.

- Bluejay – peanut kernels and sunflower seeds of all types.

- Chickadee and tufted titmouse – peanut kernels, oil (black) and black-striped sunflower seeds.

- Red-breasted nuthatch – oil (black) and black-striped sunflower seeds.

- Brown thrasher – hulled and black-striped sunflower seeds.

- Red-winged blackbird – white and red proso millet plus German (golden) millet

- Mourning dove – oil (black) sunflower seeds, white and red proso plus German (golden)millet.

Extended cold periods can also make water unavailable. 

A heated birdbath can be a tremendous draw for birds during times when all other water is frozen. Energy use is usually less than what most people expect IF the heater has a built-in thermostat.

FICK: Bird feeding in winter months

Last week, at the of invitation of&nbsp;President Trump, I attended the signing ceremony for the USMCA trade agreement at the White House.&nbsp;This agreement will bring long-term stability for Kansas agriculture and millions of dollars in new trade opportunities that will result in thousands of new jobs for hard working Kansans.

Canada and Mexico are already the United States’ two largest trading partners and this new deal with continue to build on that success, making this the most consequential trade agreement in U.S. history.

As the Trump Administration continues to keep its promise to end the unfair trade practices that have been harming American producers and manufacturers, ratification of USMCA will strengthen the position of the United States in all future trade negotiations with other countries around the world.

As the outbreak of the coronavirus strain originating in Wuhan, China continues around the world,&nbsp;U.S. health officials remain on high alert and are fully prepared to deal with the situation unfolding here at home. Efforts by President Trump and this administration have ensured our health agencies have the funding and resources necessary to combat outbreaks and protect Kansans.&nbsp;I spoke with&nbsp;officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) multiple times last week and was reassured by the the level of engagement, outreach, and coordination with states and international partners.I am confident in the measures being taken by our national and state health care officials&nbsp;and agencies.&nbsp;

However, as a physician, I understand the uncertainty and fear infectious disease outbreaks can have. I encourage all Kansans to follow recommendations from your doctor and continue to do everything you can to stay healthy. This includes regular hand-washing, disinfecting of surfaces, and carrying an alcohol based hand sanitizer, among other general best practices.&nbsp;

Jan. 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which this year also marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. An estimated 11 million Jews, non-Jewish Poles, Soviets, and other Europeans were murdered during the Holocaust, with at least 1.1 million being killed at Auschwitz alone. 

We all have an obligation to never forget the unimaginable evil of the Holocaust and those who died at Auschwitz and other concentration camps. Last week we paused to give solemn reflection to the victims who had their lives stolen from them during this tragic period.

Wednesday was Kansas Day. As a 5th generation Kansan, I'm proud of my home state and the many unique qualities that make this state a great place to call home. Our state song denotes Kansas as the place where the buffalo roam.

But today, instead of herds of buffalo dotting our plains, we have millions of cattle grazing in the beautiful Flint Hills and pastures across this state.

Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance roundtable

I had the opportunity to join Chairman Peterson and members of the House Agriculture Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research Subcommittee for a roundtable discussion and implementation update on the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN).&nbsp;

FRSAN connects farmers, ranchers, and those in agriculture-related fields to stress-assistance programs. The network can help those in need by offering resources like helplines, community outreach and education, support groups, and other services that can help improve mental health and save lives.&nbsp;

The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized the program and I have been working with officials at USDA to ensure the network is properly funded and available when folks need it most. If you or someone you know is struggling with increased stress, depression, or mental illness you can call 1-800-273-8255 for help.&nbsp;

A group from the KSU Mandela Washington Fellowship came to the office to talk about their ongoing efforts to encourage public diplomacy, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace across Sub-Saharan Africa through international exchange programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Mandela Washington Fellowship program brings accomplished innovators and leaders from African countries and communities to participate in a six-week leadership program at American universities. 

In Kansas, fellows will be hosted at Kansas State University through the Staley School of Leadership Studies. During this time they’ll connect with Kansans across the state, creating lasting relationships and gaining valuable experience that they’ll take back to their country. 

The program also partners with the U.S. Department of State to allow American organizations to travel to Africa for further collaboration with the fellowship participants, forming lasting partnerships and promoting economic growth.

I met with some of Kansas’ elected district and county attorneys to discuss the problems that methamphetamines are causing in Kansas and throughout the entire Midwest. 

A significant amount of this highly addictive drug&nbsp;comes into the United States though the Mexican border, yet another reason it is so crucial that we build the wall and secure the homeland. 

We also took the time to discuss mental health issues that are often connected with substance use disorder and the need to provide adequate treatment before problems arise. I want to thank them for taking the time to meet and look forward to working with them to find solutions to these important issues.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture began taking applications for the next round of ReConnect funding January 31.

Beginning October 1, 2020, travelers will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or other form of ID to pass through security at the airports and federal facilities. Secure and accurate forms of identification are a vital component of a strong national security strategy, and REAL ID is a coordinated effort between states and the Federal government to ensure that state-issued identification documents, such as driver’s licenses or ID cards, are reliable and accurate.&nbsp;

On Wednesday I had the opportunity to meet with medical professionals and students during the Kansas Chiropractic Association (KCA) fly-in. KCA is the leading state association representing Doctors of Chiropractic.

Most of the students here were from Cleveland University in Kansas City, but their roots were established in Great Bend, Topeka, and Dodge City. 

They advocated on access to care for veterans suffering from lower back pain, and Medicare beneficiaries paying out-of-pocket for their services.

 </figure><h2>Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance roundtable</h2>I had the opportunity to join Chairman Peterson and members of the House Agriculture Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research Subcommittee for a roundtable discussion and implementation update on the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN).&nbsp;FRSAN connects farmers, ranchers, and those in agriculture-related fields to stress-assistance programs. The network can help those in need by offering resources like helplines, community outreach and education, support groups, and other services that can help improve mental health and save lives.&nbsp;The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized the program and I have been working with officials at USDA to ensure the network is properly funded and available when folks need it most.  </figure><h2>KSU Mandela Washington Fellowship</h2>A group from the KSU Mandela Washington Fellowship came to the office to talk about their ongoing efforts to encourage public diplomacy, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace across Sub-Saharan Africa through international exchange programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Mandela Washington Fellowship program brings accomplished innovators and leaders from African countries and communities to participate in a six-week leadership program at American universities. In Kansas, fellows will be hosted at Kansas State University through the Staley School of Leadership Studies. During this time they’ll connect with Kansans across the state, creating lasting relationships and gaining valuable experience that they’ll take back to their country.  </figure><h2>Kansas district and county attorneys</h2>I met with some of Kansas’ elected district and county attorneys to discuss the problems that methamphetamines are causing in Kansas and throughout the entire Midwest. A significant amount of this highly addictive drug&nbsp;comes into the United States though the Mexican border, yet another reason it is so crucial that we build the wall and secure the homeland. We also took the time to discuss mental health issues that are often connected with substance use disorder and the need to provide adequate treatment before problems arise. I want to thank them for taking the time to meet and look forward to working with them to find solutions to these important issues.<h2>Closing the Digital Divide</h2>The U.S. Department of Agriculture began taking applications for the next round of ReConnect funding January 31.Created in 2018, this program provides up to $550 million in grants and loans toward continued deployment of modern broadband infrastructure in rural areas.  </figure><h2>Get your Real ID</h2>Beginning October 1, 2020, travelers will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or other form of ID to pass through security at the airports and federal facilities.  </figure><h2>Kansas Chiropractic Association&nbsp;</h2>On Wednesday I had the opportunity to meet with medical professionals and students during the Kansas Chiropractic Association (KCA) fly-in. KCA is the leading state association representing Doctors of Chiropractic.Most of the students here were from Cleveland University in Kansas City, but their roots were established in Great Bend, Topeka, and Dodge City. They advocated on access to care for veterans suffering from lower back pain, and Medicare beneficiaries paying out-of-pocket for their services.Dr. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., of&nbsp; Great Bend, is the First District&nbsp; representative.&nbsp;

Randall Kenneth Heier, 68, of Grinnell, died Monday, December 30, 2019. 
He was born November 26, 1951, in Oakley, KS, to Valentine and Anna Mary
 (Zimmerman) Heier. Randall enjoyed gardening, horticulture and 
socializing at the Grinnell Senior Center and grocery store.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Brice Leon Heier and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.


He is survived by his sister, Candy Percival and husband Loren, of 
Grinnell; nephew Mitch Percival, wife Nicole and their daughter Ava 
Percival and niece Lesley Percival and her daughter Koryn Ramsey. 


A Memorial Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020
 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grinnell, with burial 
in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Grinnell Senior 
Center or St. Jude’s and can be sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO

The
Cottonwood Extension District is looking for new master gardeners to
fill the ranks of it’s community-based program.

“[Master gardener] is
an educational, volunteer community program sponsored by K-State Research and
Extension,” said Margie Hammerschmidt, master gardener. “Through this program volunteers
are trained and certified in horticulture and related areas.”

Those
individuals will then use their knowledge in the community through volunteer
work. &nbsp;

“You
get the benefit of learning about gardening and horticulture, but then [you] also
get to have fun and help your community,” said Lauren Fick, horticulture extension
agent.

The
programs will include 40 hours of classroom training from K-State professors
that travel to Hays to teach the courses.

The
program runs eight weeks with a full day of training every Wednesday, starting
Jan. 29.

“We
open the program up to anyone that wants to be a master gardener,” Fick said. “That’s
the beauty of this training, you get all of the knowledge to be a master
gardener.”



The
program draws interest from a diverse group in the community.

 “We have a wide range of folks that are in the
program,” Fick said and she encouraged anyone with an interest in gardening to
check out the program.

After
the volunteers complete their training, they apply those skills in community service projects,
with another 40 hours of volunteer work required to become certified.

“There’s
plenty in place. It’s not a problem finding projects to do,” Fick said.

After
the person completes the first year and becomes a certified master gardener,
they then must complete eight hours of horticulture-related training per year and volunteer 20 hours to remain certified.

Those
projects are chosen and completed by the gardener.

“It
really is their own group,” Fick said.

“There
is so much to learn, and giving back to the community doesn’t have to feel like
a chore,” Fick said. “Gardening is truly fun and therapeutic.”

One project is the demonstration gardens at the Ag Research Center. While
the program helps the community, it also helps the center to complete research
into a variety of areas related to horticulture.

“A
part of the master gardener, being a partner with K-State,&nbsp; is that you do get access to do the research,
or you get to help them with it," Fick said, "which might seem daunting to some people, but
honestly doing the research is fun, because it's created just for your
community.

“You get to test things out. You get to say, ‘We like
this,’ or ‘We don’t like this.’ You get to do the research and then you get to
start promoting that stuff to the community, telling them all about it.

That
research keeps master gardeners at the leading edge of the field.

“You
are the one that did the research, so, in my opinion, that’s super amazing. You
are the expert.”

K-State gives the gardener a lot of flexibility in picking a research area, and then they
assist the master gardener with the project.

Hammerschmidt pointed to a recent example of researching mulch use to help conserve water in
Hays.

“We
learn during the process, then we go out and share that information with the
community,” Hammerschmidt said.

The
master gardeners work out of the extension office, 601 Main St.

The
application deadline for the program is Jan. 13. 

The
program cost is $110, including course materials and can be broken into three
payments.

Applications open for master gardener training program

Do you have a wood-burning fireplace or an insert? If so, you might want to think about the species of wood you are burning and how efficient it is.

 Not all firewood is created equal. In fact, some species of trees are able to produce much more heat per cord of wood.&nbsp; A cord is the amount of wood in a well-stacked woodpile measuring 4 feet wide by 8 feet long by 4 feet high.

FICK: Not all firewood is created equal

<img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/11/1573141404420.png">Donna Krug is the District Director and Family &amp; Consumer Science Agent for the Cottonwood Extension District. Two and a half years ago, we received word from the Kansas Attorney General’s office that the Cottonwood Extension District #17 had been approved. Months of hard work by our Extension supporters preceded the formal announcement. Our board, consisting of four members from each county, has held monthly meetings to stay abreast of the business of running an Extension District. At the end of this month we will say good bye and thank you to two of our outgoing board members and welcome two new faces to the board in January.&nbsp; Rhiannon Corn from Ellis County and Steve Tustin from Barton County will both be stepping off the board and I want to publicly say “thank you” for your support and hard work on the board. Allen Roth, from Ellis County, and Kathie Rondeau, from Barton County, were re-elected to another term on the Executive board. Tatum Kimsey, from Ellis County, and Dick Dougherty, from Barton County, were elected on November 5th and will begin their 4 year terms in January 2020. Four additional board members will continue to serve through 2021. They include: Nathan Leiker and Ramie Wasinger, from Ellis County and Deanna Essmiller and Natalie Fullerton, from Barton County.&nbsp; The Cottonwood Extension District includes a staff of seven agents and two office professionals. Our goals include providing research based information to help improve the quality of life of the individuals we serve. I hope you have had an opportunity to utilize our services. Perhaps you have worked with one of our Agriculture agents, Alicia Boor or Stacy Campbell, to learn about wheat varieties that do well in our region or about details of the Farm Bill. If your family is involved in 4-H or after school programs, you have two experienced agents, Susan Schlichting and Michelle Beran, leading the youth development program in our district.&nbsp; Take time to introduce yourself to our Horticulture Agent, Lauren Fick. Lauren divides her time between the two counties and is excited to provide leadership to a successful Master Gardener program and answer yard, garden and tree questions you may have. And finally, Berny Unruh and I are committed to bringing Extension educational programming related to nutrition, health and wellness, food safety, family resource management, aging issues, and family life in general. I also want to mention our two experienced office professionals. Brenda Walton, in the Great Bend office, takes the lead with the finances for the district while Theresa Meis, in the Hays office, focuses on communicating our efforts through newsletters and our web site. Both Brenda and Theresa handle a multitude of other duties that keep our offices running smoothly. We’ve also appreciated having Kory Ridnour, our intern, help us&nbsp;with media and the marketing of our programs. It is great news that K-State Research and Extension has answers to many of lifes’ questions, typically at no or low cost. Unlike what you might find through a Google search, the answers we provide are research based and non-biased. I hope you will take a look at our Cottonwood web site. We have tried a different format for our newsletter that I think you will like. KRUG: Thanks to outgoing board members

&nbsp;<img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/11/1573141354634.png">Even though gardening season is over, gardeners themselves never stop learning, growing and giving.&nbsp;This is the essence of what it means to be a Master Gardener.&nbsp;If you enjoy learning and giving back as a volunteer, consider becoming a Master Gardener in 2020. Now is the time to apply and reserve your spot for the 2020 training course.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Master Gardener basic training classes will be held at the Hays Extension office beging January 29, 2020 and run Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through March 18th.&nbsp;Topics covered include: basic botany, soil fertility, insects, diseases, tree and shrub care, vegetables, fruit gardening, turf management, wildlife, landscape design and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who are Master Gardeners?Master Gardeners are K-State Research &amp; Extension volunteers who enjoy cultivating their own plants and gardens while sharing their skills and knowledge with the community around them to help others grow.&nbsp;Master Gardening is a wonderful way to enrich your life and the lives of others.&nbsp;Why become a Master Gardener?The decision to become a Master Gardener can be very rewarding.&nbsp;It is a decision to take your horticulture knowledge to the next level, and it is also a commitment to find creative ways to make a difference in our community while sharing that knowledge with the people and places around you. Training is just one great benefit.&nbsp;Master Gardeners receive a 40-hour-plus horticulture training course from K-State Extension specialists and county Extension agents.&nbsp;The basic training provides a great starting point for those new to gardening, but is also in depth enough to apply to gardeners of any skill level.&nbsp;Other benefits of being a Master Gardener include the camaraderie of people who share similar passions, receiving ongoing horticulture support through K-State Research and Extension, and occasional visits to horticultural places of interest.&nbsp;What about volunteering?&nbsp;Once training is complete, Master Gardeners take their knowledge out to the community to share it with others in unique and meaningful ways.&nbsp;First year Master Gardeners volunteer 40 hours of time and during succeeding years have a commitment of just 20 hours to remain active.&nbsp;Master Gardeners are encouraged to find their creativity in looking for ways to impact the community.&nbsp;A few activities many Master Gardeners enjoy volunteering on include:&nbsp;the demonstration garden, county fairs, educational garden tours and events, and booths at public events.&nbsp;Use these two questions to help determine if the Master Gardener program is right for you: • Are you available for about 40 hours of daytime classes on Wednesdays from February through March?•&nbsp;Do you have the interest and the time to attend monthly Master Gardener meetings and donate 40 hours of horticultural service to our community during the first year?&nbsp;If you are interested in joining the program or have questions regarding any of this information call the K-State Research &amp; Extension office.&nbsp;We need notification of interest as soon as possible as space is limited.&nbsp;Applications can be filled out or downloaded online at&nbsp;cottonwood.k-state.edu&nbsp;or picked up at the Extension office and are due by January 8, 2020.&nbsp;The Great Bend office can be contacted at 620-793-1910 and the Ellis county office is 785-628-9430.&nbsp;We look forward to hearing from you!
