TOPEKA – Kansas&nbsp;businesses and entrepreneurs were honored Thursday night at the Robert W. Plaster Center at Pittsburg State University for their outstanding contributions to Kansas communities and the state economy at the Kansas Department of Commerce’s 2025&nbsp;To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards&nbsp;ceremony.

It was announced at the ceremony, attended by nearly 500 people, that Grey Snow Management Solutions won the 2025 Governor’s Award of Excellence and GeoProbe Systems was named the 2025 Governor’s Exporter of the Year.&nbsp;

“Grey Snow and GeoProbe have dynamic missions and visions that align with our commitment to moving Kansas forward and supporting customers and communities across the state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Companies like these advance our state’s exporting efforts, contribute significantly to their local economies, and are more than deserving of these awards.”&nbsp;

A record 431 businesses, organizations, and individuals were nominated in 11 different categories for this year’s&nbsp;To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards. Nominees were reviewed and scored for various criteria, including business expansion, employee recruitment and retention practices, training and educational programs, capital investment, and support for local community events. A total of 372 Merit Awards and 59 Regional Awards were presented at the event. Additionally, one nominee in each category was designated a Statewide Winner, making them finalists for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.&nbsp;

“Kansas businesses are the backbone of the record-setting success our state has experienced over the last six years,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “All the businesses recognized at&nbsp;To The Stars&nbsp;are worthy of celebration because they exemplify our famous work ethic and determination, further solidifying Kansas as the best place in the nation to do business.”&nbsp;

To kick off the awards ceremony, emcee Melissa Vincent recognized two Kansans who have been inducted into the Kansas Business Hall of Fame for their significant contributions to economic growth. This year’s contemporary honoree, Marci Penner, is a rural champion and author from Inman who is the executive director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation. The historical honoree, Emerson Carey, Sr., is an entrepreneur and philanthropist from Hutchinson known as a salt manufacturer and industrial leader.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Commerce also introduced two new award categories: the Small Business Champion – Corporate Partner Award that highlights corporations demonstrating exceptional commitment to small business — and the Mainstreet Momentum Award that honors a business continuously working to improve downtown areas and commercial districts through growth and engagement.

The 2025 Governor’s Award of Excellence winner, Grey Snow Management Solutions, is an economic development enterprise created to manage, build, support, and enhance tribal sovereignty, as well as provide expert services for government and commercial clients. Their mission is to provide sustainable, responsible, and profitable services for the cultural and financial betterment of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and all of Indian Country across North America.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Governor’s Exporter of the Year award has been given to a Kansas company for more than three decades. The award brings statewide recognition to companies for their export efforts and showcases companies as role models of exporting success in Kansas.&nbsp;

The 2025 Governor’s Exporter of the Year winner, GeoProbe Systems, was founded in 1987 by two engineers who manufactured and introduced the first direct push machines and tooling to the environmental industry — changing the way soil, groundwater, and soil gas samples are collected. Since those first methods went to the field, GeoProbe has invested heavily in engineering to continue developing new designs and innovative techniques for fieldwork, diversified across a wide range of drilling industries – garnering a global reputation as a drilling industry leader.&nbsp;

Other Exporter of the Year finalists were SOR Controls Group of Lenexa and Harlan Global Manufacturing of Kansas City.&nbsp;

At the end of the awards ceremony, the agency introduced &nbsp;the new&nbsp;Randi Tveitaraas Jack International Business Development Award. It will recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing Kansas in the global economy. The award was named in honor of Randi Tveitaraas Jack, who recently retired from the Kansas Department of Commerce after more than 37 years of outstanding service to the state. The agency recognized James “Jamie” Hall, Vice President of Great Plains Manufacturing in Salina, as the inaugural recipient.&nbsp;

Gov. Kelly, Kansas Department of Commerce celebrate Kansas Businesses at ceremony

On November 6, K-State Extension, along with the Great Bend Rec Center will be hosting a program by Wildlife Specialist Drew Ricketts starting at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands Center located at&nbsp;<a>592 NE K 156 Hwy</a>, Great Bend. &nbsp;

During his program, Ricketts will discuss coyote biology, helping people to better understand their movements, vocalizations, and diet among other topics. He will also discuss tips and methods on trapping and calling coyotes including the proper use of mouth and electronic calls. &nbsp;

BOOR: Coyote program scheduled Thursday in Barton County

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man who&nbsp;admitted killing a Kansas woman who was reported missing is going to prison for the rest of his life. 

On Monday Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced 31-year-old Kyle Bearden to a life term for the murder of 30-year-old Mariana Christian, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. The earliest possibility of parole is 25 years and an additional 181 months in prison if parole is granted.

In August, Bearden entered a plea of guilty during an evidentiary hearing before Judge Goering.

The plea agreement called for the parties to jointly recommend a prison sentence of life with parole eligibility after 25 years, to be followed by an additional 15 years of imprisonment if parole is granted.

Around 10:30 a.m. on July 21, a friend of Mariana Christian filed a missing person report. The friend said Ms. Christian had a history of mental health challenges and often relied on them for transportation to work. That morning, Christian was not at her home in the 1200 block of S. Paige when the friend arrived to pick her up.

At the residence, the friend encountered an unidentified man later identified as Kyle Bearden who said he didn’t know Ms. Christian’s whereabouts.

He claimed Mariana Christian had left the apartment on Friday, July 18, in a truck with an unknown man and woman and hadn’t returned. He also expressed concern for her safety. Although not listed on the lease, the man appeared to be living in the apartment.

Although Ms. Christian was last seen on Friday, July 18, she wasn’t reported missing until Monday, July 21. After multiple failed attempts to reach her and finding her absence unusual, the friend contacted police. Officers issued an attempt-to-locate alert, and investigators took over the case.

WPD investigators identified Bearden as a person of interest. They followed leads to locate Ms. Christian, discovering evidence of her death and where her remains were left in Cottonwood Park near Armor and Bayley in Wichita.

Wichita Police officers responded to the area and located human remains. Investigators believe Bearden shot Ms. Christian.

Crime scene investigators processed Ms. Christian’s apartment and found evidence of foul play. On the morning of July 31, the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center positively identified the remains as those of Mariana Christian.

Kyle Bearden was arrested on July 30 and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp;

Sentencing Day: Killer found at missing Kan. woman's home

The Ellis County Workforce Committee discussed health needs for small businesses and the creation of a new Wellness Committee.

The task force, led by Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of the Chamber in Hays, suggested the wellness committee should centralize local resources to promote workplace health.

Jay Harris, K-State Cottonwood Extension District, showed interest in the idea and requested to be a part of it.

"We could even offer some additional resources and training to help the employer pass on to the employee. I think the committee is a great idea," he said.

Other representatives in attendance, including RANS Aircraft, city of Hays and Fort Hays State University, shared what their businesses offered for wellness, ranging from premium discounts, creating company walking paths and covering gym memberships.

However, the task force also highlighted the challenges associated with these benefits, such as low engagement without greater incentives.

Shelly Schlitter with RANS Aircraft said employees never utilized a bike trail installed behind its factory, although its gym membership discounts for employees have seen success.

Wasinger also highlighted the current chamber health-related support for businesses, such as health insurance offered through Aetna, which helps chamber members save 2% on open market plans. An informational meeting on the plan is set for noon on Oct. 22 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.

The committee had a debrief of the Hays High School Career Cluster in September that featured manufacturing, distribution and welding. It was seen as a success.

Upcoming events on the committee agenda include High School Career Exploration Day on Oct. 29 at Hays High, open to students from surrounding high schools, and the next cluster meeting set for Oct. 15.

Ellis County Workforce Committee discusses health programs

In the past week, sorghum ergot has been detected in several locations in Kansas, primarily in forage sorghum fields, but also in grain sorghum. This is a relatively rare event, with notable prior occurrences in 1997 and 2017. Sorghum ergot in the U.S. is caused by the fungus Claviceps africana. Claviceps africana has been reported in Australia, Central America, North America, South America, and South Africa. Sorghum ergot is not the same pathogen that causes ergot in wheat (Claviceps purpurea).

Sorghum ergot development - this fungus, Claviceps africana, infects unfertilized sorghum ovaries, resulting in no development of grain. Pollen present at the same time as ergot inoculum usually prevents ergot infection because pollination occurs much more quickly. The absence of pollen in male-sterile sorghum forage fields makes them extremely susceptible to infection by C. africana when both the pathogen and a favorable environment/weather are present. Sorghum ergot can also be a problem if pollen is somehow absent or ineffective at the flowering stage. This can occur if the plants were subjected to cool, moist conditions prior to or during the flowering period. Anything that reduces pollination increases the potential for ergot infection.

Studies have shown a higher risk of sorghum ergot infection when minimum temperatures are ~53°F. Additionally, the chance of infection decreases when temperatures are above 75°F prior to flowering.

Symptoms and Dispersal - sorghum ergot is a grain replacement disease that creates two major problems.

· First, infection of non-pollinated ovaries precludes normal seed-set or development. Thus, infections are directly responsible for grain yield losses. · Secondly, seed developing adjacent to infected florets often become contaminated with sugary, sphacelia honeydew, which is a sweet, sticky, amber-colored fluid (Figure 1).

Ergot infection is easy to identify because of the abundance of honeydew that the fungus produces. Thick, sticky, ambered colored, syrup-like honeydew drips from the sorghum head to the leaves and to the ground, where it often dries in a white powdery like substance. The honeydew also sometimes appears as a dried brown to black colored mass in place of kernels in the sorghum head.

Is ergot in sorghum toxic to cattle and other livestock? We are not aware of any issues with toxicity in the past or present in the US caused by the ergot fungus Claviceps africana that infects sorghum. This includes forage fed as silage or hay. It is very important to note that this is not the same ergot fungus that infects wheat, rye, triticale and fescue. The honeydew itself contains very little toxin (alkaloids). In the sorghum head, instead of grain being produced, a compact, hard fungal mass called sclerotia may develop in the later stages of infection. It has a tough outer rind and a compact inner core that may be reddish brown in color and replaces kernels. Do not confuse this with dried honeydew or secondary infections. These sclerotium fall to the ground or are generally separated from the grain during processing. These sclerotia would be expected to have a higher level of alkaloids. However, it is important to note that in the High Plains, there is some question about whether sclerotia is even produced.

· Fungicide applications at this point in time will not be effective. · Harvesting of sorghum, for grain or silage, may prove difficult due to the sticky nature of the honeydew. · If portions of the field are more severely affected than others, producers may consider not harvesting that portion of the field or keeping the resulting hay lots separate for future testing. · Delaying harvest until after a rain or freeze can help reduce the amount of honeydew on the plant. · Honeydew can cause mold formation in baled hay or silage. Mold formation will reduce feed quality and can form mycotoxins. · The presence of alkaloids, which are a toxic concern for livestock feeding, is reliant on the production of sclerotia. At this time, sclerotia production has not been verified in Kansas fields.

Many people, for a variety of reasons, such as arthritis or other painful conditions, don’t participate in regular physical activity, despite the health benefits it would offer.

The Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease program was developed to help people with or without arthritis form walking groups whose goals are safety and success. The program’s three major objectives are to provide participants with

· Education about successful physical activity for people with arthritis · Education about arthritis management · Opportunity to begin and develop an ongoing aerobic fitness program

Walk with Ease’s information and strategies are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change, and arthritis management.

Groups meet for 6 weeks, twice per week. Each session lasts about one hour. The length of each session depends on how long the group decides to walk. At the start, some people may only be able to walk 5 to 15 minutes, but the program will help you gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of walking, two-three times a week. The program can be modified to meet the interests and needs of participants who walk at their own pace.

Each session begins with a brief discussion of a topic important to successful walking or arthritis management. After the discussion the group will warm up, stretch, walk, cool down, and stretch one last time. Walking with a group is fun and groups often spend additional time socializing.

The Walk with Ease program is designed for people with arthritis- young and old, male and female, fit and not-so-fit. It is also suitable for people without arthritis who would like to begin a regular walking program to gain the benefits of regular aerobic exercise.

If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you can probably participate successfully, and the program can be modified to meet your needs.

If you want to participate but have concerns about your health, consult your health care practitioner before you begin.

To participate in the course, you complete and return an application. KOERNER: Walk with Ease

I love to cook but some weeks it is overwhelming to put together nutritious meals; and it’s just my husband and I these days! An article from K-State Extension shares how meal prepping can be a valuable tool to save time, reduce food waste, and meet nutritional goals. It is, however, about finding a system that works for your lifestyle.

Chelsea King, a nutrition, food safety and health agent with K-State Extension’s office in Johnson County, says successful meal prepping starts with a solid plan.

“Often, people feel overwhelmed because they try to create brand-new meals every time they cook,” King said. “Instead, start with go-to recipes that you and your family already enjoy. Once you have those, it becomes easier to build a meal plan around them.”

King encourages home cooks to try one new recipe each week to gradually expand their menus. And don't forget to plan for snacks.

“Snacks are one of those things that are easy to overlook,” she said. “It’s tempting to grab a bag of chips, but with a little prep, you can have nutritious options like energy bites or cut-up fruits and vegetables ready to go.”

Before heading to the grocery store, King suggests checking your pantry, refrigerator and freezer.

“One of the biggest money wasters is buying items you already have,” she said. “Taking inventory before you shop not only saves money, it helps reduce food waste.”

King also recommends eating seasonally. “Seasonal produce is often more nutritious and flavorful,” she said. “It’s usually harvested at its peak and may have been picked just a day or two before you buy it at the farmers market.”

Batch cooking is another time-saver. “If you're making rice, cook extra,” she said. “Roast more vegetables than you need for one meal, and use the leftovers in salads or breakfasts. It saves both time and energy.”

While meal prepping often conjures images of spending an entire Sunday cooking, King says it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

“If one big prep day doesn’t work for you, break it into smaller sessions during the week,” she said. “Do what fits your schedule, whether that’s prepping every few days or just washing and chopping produce ahead of time.”

Food safety is a key part of any meal prep plan. King emphasizes the importance of clean workspaces, proper handwashing and using food-safe containers, especially for freezing meals.

“Don’t use old yogurt containers for freezer storage — they’re not designed for those temperatures,” she said. “Use freezer-safe containers and always label and date what you store.”

Meal prepping also helps in those inevitable life moments — a late meeting, traffic delay, or a sick child.

“Having emergency meals in the freezer keeps you from relying on expensive fast food,” King said. “It helps you stick to your nutrition goals and saves money.”

“Meal-prepping isn’t a one-size-fits all,” she adds. “Find what works best for you and your family. Start small and focus on preparing meals for one or two days, then add more based on your comfort and needs.”

“The overall goal of meal prepping is to be more efficient in the kitchen, meaning less time spent in the kitchen, and to have nutritious homemade meals all week long.”

BERAN: Find a meal prepping system that works for your lifestyle

The Ellis County Commission approved an agreement for replacing a bridge over the Saline River on 125th Avenue during its meeting on Tuesday.

The design agreement is with Penco Engineering for a county bridge about 12 miles north and half a mile east of the city of Ellis.

The project is funded through a program that awarded the county’s Public Works Department about $4.36 million for construction and inspection. The grant also includes plans for replacing another bridge on Saline River Road and one on County Line Road.

The financial impact to the county is $110,000 for design and preliminary engineering.

The commission approved an agreement granting AMP Rentals access to a county-owned water well in the northern part of the county, allowing for the well's use until a rural water meter is obtained from the Trego County Rural Water District.

Darin Myers, county administrator, emphasized the agreement does not tap into Trego County rural water and will give Adam Pray, with Platinum Builders, temporary access for an undetermined amount of time.

Commissioner Neal Younger asked for clarification on the duration of AMP Rentals' access. Pray said it could be years, but usage will be less than that of an average household.&nbsp;

"It should be a minimal amount of water," Pray said.

Pray is number 31 on the waiting list to get a water meter from the district. The property is on the north side of the land purchased for the new public works facility and yard.

The water will be used for limited business and personal purposes, with all expenses and compliance obligations covered by Pray or the future landowner.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling provided the oath of office to re-elected County Treasurer Vern Ruder, officially swearing him in for his next term. Ruder was re-elected in November 2024.

Commissioners approved a request to allow trailer, RV, and boat storage on a property along Toulon Avenue. The permit was recommended for approval by the Ellis County Planning and Zoning Commission.

High Plains Mental Health Executive Director Craig Poe provided an update to the commission on the status of construction of the Crisis Intervention Center project, which remains on schedule.

Ellis County Historical Society Director Amanda Rupp provided an update on the organization’s ongoing projects, including progress on its buildings in Hays and Victoria, and preparations for the 150th anniversary of Volga German settlement in the county.

Monique Koerner and Karissa Frasier with the Cottonwood Extension District also updated the commission on recent and upcoming health and wellness programs.

Ellis County Commission approves bridge replacement agreement

What’s not to like about walking? It’s free. It’s easy to do, and it’s not just easy on joints but it also keeps them lubricated and flexible.

 There’s no question that walking is good for you. A University of Tennessee study found that women who walked had less body fat than those who didn’t walk. It also lowers the risk of blood clots, since the calf acts as a venous pump, contracting and pumping blood from the feet and legs back to the heart, reducing the load on the heart. In addition to being aerobic exercise, walking is good for you in many other ways.

1. Improve Circulation - Walking wards off heart disease, brings up the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and strengthens the heart. Post-menopausal women who walk just one to two miles a day can lower their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks. Women who walk 30 minutes a day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20%, and by 40% when they stepped up the pace, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

2. Shore Up Your Bones - Walking can stop the loss of bone mass for those with osteoporosis, according to Michael A. Schwartz, MD, of Plancher Orthopedics &amp; Sports Medicine in New York. In fact, one study of post-menopausal women found that 30 minutes of walking each day reduced their risk of hip fractures by 40%.

4. Lighten Your Mood -&nbsp;Walking releases natural painkilling endorphins to the body – one of the emotional benefits of exercise. A California State University, Long Beach, study showed that the more steps people took during the day, the better their moods were.

5. Lose Weight - A brisk 30-minute walk burns 200 calories. Over time, calories burned can lead to pounds dropped.

6. Strengthen Muscles&nbsp;- Walking tones your leg and abdominal muscles – and even arm muscles if you pump them as you walk. This increases your range of motion, shifting the pressure and weight from your joints to your muscles.

7. Improve Sleep -&nbsp;Studies found that women ages 50 to 75 who took one-hour morning walks were more likely to have less insomnia than women who didn’t walk.

8. Support Your Joints -The majority of joint cartilage has no direct blood supply. It gets its nutrition from joint fluid that circulates as we move. Movement and compression from walking “squishes” the cartilage, bringing oxygen and nutrients into the area.

9. Improve Your Breath - When you are walking, your breathing rate increases, causing oxygen to travel faster through bloodstream, helping to eliminate waste products and improve your energy level and the ability to heal.

10. Slow Down Mental Decline - A study of 6,000 women ages 65 and older found that age-related memory decline was lower in those who walked more. According to the University of California, San Francisco, study, women walking 2.5 miles per day had a 17% decline in memory compared to a 25% decline in women who walked less than a half-mile per week.

11. Lower Alzheimer's Risk&nbsp;- A study from the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter of a mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease than those who walked less.

12. Do More for Longer - Aerobic walking and resistance exercise programs may reduce the incidence of disability in the activities of daily living for people who are older than 65 and have symptomatic osteoarthritis, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management found.

I’m going to add another benefit that I have found over the years. 

Sometimes we think we are too tired to take a walk, but guess what? Our bodies usually reward us in a positive way by giving us more energy if we just get up and move our bodies. In our exercise classes we always comment on how much better we feel after we move our bodies. It’s so true. I hope that is motivation for you to get up move your body today. Try it!

It’s easy to do, and it’s not just easy on joints but it also keeps them lubricated and flexible. There’s no question that walking is good for you. A University of Tennessee study found that women who walked had less body fat than those who didn’t walk. It also lowers the risk of blood clots, since the calf acts as a venous pump, contracting and pumping blood from the feet and legs back to the heart, reducing the load on the heart. In addition to being aerobic exercise, walking is good for you in many other ways.1. Improve Circulation - Walking wards off heart disease, brings up the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and strengthens the heart. Post-menopausal women who walk just one to two miles a day can lower their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks. Women who walk 30 minutes a day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20%, and by 40% when they stepped up the pace, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.2. Shore Up Your Bones - Walking can stop the loss of bone mass for those with osteoporosis, according to Michael A. Schwartz, MD, of Plancher Orthopedics &amp; Sports Medicine in New York. In fact, one study of post-menopausal women found that 30 minutes of walking each day reduced their risk of hip fractures by 40%.3. Field bindweed, a perennial vine in the morning glory family, infests millions of acres in the Great Plains. This weed significantly reduces crop yield and quality, reduces land value, interferes with harvest by entangling crop plants, and increases production costs associated with control practices. Earlier research in Hays, KS, over the span of 12 years, indicated that dense stands of field bindweed induced 20% to 50% cereal crop yield loss and 50% to 80% row crop yield reduction.

In North America, field bindweed was first reported in Virginia in 1739. It was possibly brought to Kansas in infested wheat seed from the Ukrainian region of Russia between 1870 and 1875. In 1877 and 1888, it was reported near Topeka and Nebraska, respectively.

Growth and development Seeds near the soil surface will germinate throughout the growing season following rainfall. Seedling emergence primarily occurs in the spring, usually in early to mid-April in Kansas, and continues growing until November or until temperatures drop to 20°F or lower; at these temperatures, its growth may be retarded, but the vines do not die.

Seedlings quickly develop a deep taproot and numerous lateral roots about six weeks after emergence. Once lateral roots grow, the plant has a perennial growth habit. Growth ceases during severe drought, but new top growth appears after adequate rainfall. 

May 15 to June 15 is the heaviest bloom period in west-central Kansas, with the seed usually maturing from June 15 to July 15. However, field bindweed can continue to bloom under favorable conditions and produce seed during July and August.

Roots and food reserves Field bindweed stores a large quantity of carbohydrates deep into its root system, which provides energy for below- and above-ground growth. Roots can have a lateral spread of approximately 10 feet in one season and may penetrate 18 to 20 feet. In two or three growing seasons, roots may extend to a diameter of 17 to 18 feet. In areas with average annual precipitations of 30 inches or more, field bindweed roots have been found 30 feet below the surface.

However, on upland soils near Hays, where annual precipitation averages 23 inches, few roots were found below 6 feet. Also, more than 60% of the total weight of roots is reported to be in the top two feet of soil. Buds formed along lateral roots can develop into shoots, which become new plants when they surface.

Dispersal mode Field bindweed spreads by root segments and seeds, both of which can be spread by road maintenance and equipment. Root segments with buds are dispersed by tillage implements and are capable of starting new plants when the soil has adequate moisture.

· Vines, wrapped around tools and those that pass through harvesting equipment, drop field bindweed seeds.

· Seeds are collected with harvested grain and often planted with crop seed.

· Seeds in grain or hay fed to livestock pass through animals undigested and spread with manure.

· Seed is transported by drainage water, birds, animals, machinery, and vehicles.

Management Because field bindweed has long seed viability and tremendous food reserves stored in roots, a long-term management program is required for its successful control. A single application of an herbicide will not eradicate established stands.

FRASIER: Medicare Part D Open Enrollment

Fall is an excellent time to plant a tree. The soils are still warm, allowing the root system to begin to spread out. It also gives the roots time to settle and grow before the stress of the summer heat comes along. 

Homeowners should plan to do a little research in order to pick the right tree for their particular yard. Choose trees that are adapted to your location. Consider whether the tree produces nuisance fruit, or if there are disease-resistant varieties available. And consider the mature size of the tree to make sure you have enough room.

Here are ten rules for planting trees in a home landscape.

1. Select the right tree for the site. K-State has a list of<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/horticulture-resource-center/recommended-plants//">&nbsp;trees recommended for Kansas</a> available online. 2. Keep the tree well-watered and in a shady location until planting. When moving the tree, lift it by the root ball or pot – not by the trunk. 3. Before planting, remove all wires, labels, cords or anything else tied to the plant. Plant the tree on solid ground, not in fill dirt. 4. Dig a hole deep enough so that the tree sits slightly above nursery level. The width should be three times the width of the root ball.&nbsp; 5. Remove all containers from the root ball, including plastic and peat pots. Roll burlap and wire baskets back into the hole, cutting as much of the excess as possible. 6. Backfill the hole with soil that was removed. Make sure the soil is loosened, without clods or clumps. 7. Don’t cut back branches of the tree after planting except those that are rubbing or damaged. 8. Water the tree thoroughly, then once a week for the first season if there is insufficient rainfall. 9. Place mulch 2-4 inches deep around the tree, and cover an area 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball. 10. Stake only when necessary; trees will establish more quickly and grow faster if they are not staked.&nbsp;

By following these steps when planting your new tree, you are giving it the best start to be able to thrive in the years to come.

I often hear adults complain about the lack of financial skills with young people. 

While there are times that I certainly understand the frustration as I learned to make change at my first job at age 13. There are other times that I remind myself, and others, that if someone doesn’t teach them, they can’t know what they don’t know.

In my new role as a Family and Community Wellness agent, I get to lean into twenty years of banking experience and utilize great financial resources from K-State Extension.

I have had an opportunity to begin work with a small group of college students. In our initial session, we worked through wants versus needs and that can sure be a tough conversation! 

This is followed up by setting SMART financial goals with the students looking at goals between now and the end of the school year, intermediate goals of 3-5 years, and long-term goals of 8-10 years. As a reminder, SMART refers to Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. 

I was very impressed by several whose intermediate and long-term goals included where they wanted to be in their career and the tools they would need to saving for a house.

The next step was identifying sources of income and categorizing expenses. We pulled all of those pieces together into a basic budget! One of my favorite questions – from more than one student – was “if I have money left, how much should I be putting into savings?”

I am looking forward to working with this group over the next few months as we take a hard look at how to be an efficient grocery store shopper, work on basic cooking skills, and other skills that can help them be more effective adults and employees.

We have several great publications and tools if you need to take a look at your financial goals and move your household toward financial stability and security.

 </figure>By&nbsp;TAMARA ROBERTSON Cottonwood Extension DistrictOctober marks the start of a new 4-H year, and with it comes National 4-H Week, which will be observed October 5–11. 4-H is the largest youth organization in the country, empowering young people to grow as leaders and active community members. In Ellis County, 4-H is thriving with seven clubs and more than 200 members actively participating in community and educational events.4-H is for youth ages 7–18 and helps foster essential life skills. Children ages 5–6 can also get involved through the Cloverbud program, which introduces them to 4-H through fun, hands-on activities. With more than 45 projects to choose from, members can develop skills in areas ranging from traditional livestock showing to STEM, photography, and much more.4-H members and leaders live across Kansas, in all 50 states, and in 82 other countries worldwide. In Kansas alone, there are more than 17,000 4-H members participating in community clubs, and Ellis County is excited to welcome new members and families to this dynamic program.During National 4-H Week, members are encouraged to wear their club shirts, share information about their 4-H projects, and participate in “48 Hours of 4-H,” a state-wide community service initiative that encourages hands-on service in all communities. We invite everyone to join us in wearing green on Monday, October 6.Some of the major community events hosted or supported by 4-H in Ellis County include the 4-H Food Challenge, 4-H Day, Ellis County Fair and various community service projects. During the 2025 4-H Day, over 30 entries were presented, featuring talent, music, demonstrations, project talks, poems, speeches, and the Cloverbud Show and Tell. At the 2025 Ellis County Fair, 862 entries were submitted by 4-H members. Many of these outstanding projects were also entered at the Kansas State Fair and will be on display in the Hays Arts Council Main Street window from October 1st through the 23rd.The 4-H motto, “To Make the Best Better,” is reflected in the organization’s continued efforts to grow and reach more youth. This year, the 4-H Promotional Committee sent flyers to all K–5th grade students in Ellis County to encourage new members to join—over 1,900 flyers in total. Beyond recruitment, Ellis County 4-H stays connected with the community through presentations to local clubs and outreach with students across the county.4-H would not be possible without the support of the community. At its roots, 4-H is a family program where parents and family members help youth with project work and other activities. Volunteer leaders are also vital to the program. Each club needs two or more&nbsp;adult leaders who teach, organize, assist club officers, support meetings, and guide new families.
