Sue E. Trimble, 70, Hays, died Sunday, October 22, 2023 at HaysMed.

She was born March 4, 1953 in Hays, the daughter of Herbert and Bernetha (Boos) Leiker. 

In 1971, she graduated from Hill City High School. 

She was united in marriage to Joseph Trimble in 1971, and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1990. 

Sue earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and was a dedicated early childhood teacher who loved the children she taught in the Garden City school district. She had a strong faith life, enjoyed reading, learning history, and loved her family, extending that love as a foster parent.

Survivors include her mother Bernetha Leiker of Hays, a daughter, Sarah Falke and husband James of Holcomb, three brothers, Mike Leiker and wife Ruth of Hays, Tim Leiker and wife Dot of Elkhart, and Steve Leiker of Russell, a sister, Barbara Moore and husband Bruce of Winfield, and three grandchildren, Arya, Everett, and Finley Falke.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Pastor Russell Kirkpatrick officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Palco Cemetery.

Phyllis Elzene Hurtt (Wales) died peacefully in her home on Monday, October 23, 2023. Phyllis was born on November 26, 1934, in Smith County, Kansas. 

Her parents were Alva and Letha (Yerkes) Wales. In January 1935 Letha passed away, Alva then remarried in 1936 to Leona Abernathy who loved and raised Phyllis. Alva and Leona gave birth to two more children, a son Kay and a daughter Linda. 

Phyllis went to school in Goodland, Kansas.

On October 28, 1950, Phyllis married Scott Bernard Hurtt and they made Colby, KS their home. They had two sons, Joady Scott born May 25, 1951 and Michael Joel on July 4, 1953. 

Phyllis was a homemaker, then worked at the Colby Schools as a cook for over 30 years.

She is survived by her son Joady and his wife Karen of Colby, KS; granddaughter Jayme Pfeifer (Jason) of Oakley, KS; grandson Garrett Hurtt (Jill) of Trenton, NE; great-grandchildren Jackson Pfeifer of Hays, KS and Grace Pfeifer of Oakley, KS; sister Linda Allacher (John) of Atwood, KS and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Scott, brother Kay Wales, son Michael and grandson Steven Hurtt.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the Beulah Cemetery in Colby, KS.

DIGHTON - Albert Elmer Cook, Jr. was born October 22, 1930. He went to the Lord on his 93rd birthday, October 22, 2023. Albert was the son of Elmer Albert and Nina Ethel (Lamb) Cook.

Al graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1948. 

Working construction until 1950, Albert joined the United States Navy in 1950. After serving in the Navy on a munitions ship, the USS Titania, during the Korean War, Al returned to Mayfield, KS, and married Marilyn Ann Metzen on August 28th, 1956. Marilyn died January 19, 2008.

Al and Marilyn moved to Dighton, KS, in 1959, Al to teach as the shop teacher at Dighton High School and Marilyn as a cosmetologist at the Green Bonnet. 

After 36 years of teaching industrial arts, coaching football, cross-country, and track, Al retired only to begin serving on the school board for an additional 24 years. During that time, he served also on the Kansas Association of School Boards Risk Management committee. 

He served the community as a member of the American Legion Post #190 and as past commander of the Dighton VFW Post. As a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus, he served his church. In addition, Albert had a custom-cutting business that harvested primarily in Summer and Lane County.

Al and Marilyn invested their entire lives in the Dighton community where they raised seven children. 

They are survived by Randy and Lenora Cook, Garden City, KS; Mike and Jenny Cook, Augusta, KS; Greg and Lorinda Cook, Tribune, KS; Rhonda Cook and Amy Carroll, Downingtown, PA; Becky and Steve Daniels, North Attleboro, MA; Mark and Signe Cook, Ellinwood, KS; and Marla and Mike Porch, Halstead, KS. Al and Marilyn were blessed with 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and students too numerous to mention that they considered “family.”

Albert Cook cherished and was dedicated to the parents, students, and people of Dighton that he was so honored to teach, know, and share life with.

Visitation for Albert Cook will be Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, October 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, Kansas. Albert Elmer Cook, Jr.

Betsy Ruth (Ellsaesser) Losey, 82, Hays, died Monday, October 23, 2023 at Homestead Assisted Living.

She was born June 22, 1941 in Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of Frank T. and Catherine Sarah (McCree) Ellsaesser.

She lived on the family farm north of Hugoton, Kansas until graduating from Hugoton High School and going to Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Hugoton, serving in leadership roles in the Methodist Youth Fellowship at the local and state levels. At the time of her death, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hays.

Betsy married William J. Losey on August 13, 1961 at the Wesley Foundation Chapel in Hays, and he preceded her in death on March 16, 2022.

She graduated from Fort Hays State with a BS in elementary education in 1970 and earned an MS in education in 1971. She was an elementary school librarian for USD 489 Hays from 1977 until 2001. She also served as an adjunct faculty for Fort Hays State University College of Education and for the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University. She was an active member of the American Association of School Librarians and the Kansas Association of School Librarians.

She was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for the Wheatland District and Coronado Council, serving on many committees and in the training of leaders for the scouting program. She earned the Silver Beaver and the Wood Badge honors. Betsy enjoyed various crafts and cardmaking.

She is survived by her three children, Bill and Joyce Losey of Hugoton, Jim and Sandy Losey of Hays, and Rebecca Haury of Augusta, six grandchildren, Jennifer Whitmer (John), Amy Garza (Chris), Catherine Losey, Michael Losey (Amanda), Elizabeth Haury, and Steven Haury, six great grandchildren, Jason, Jade, Jacob, and Jana Whitmer, Greyson and Mojo Garza, her siblings, Bonnie Raff of Hope, AR, Barbara Miller of Boulder, CO, and Charles Ellsaesser of Bailey, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband William.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Rev. Delbert Stanton officiating. A private family inurnment will be in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

On Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. 

This bi-annual event allows for the public to anonymously dispose of old, unused, unwanted, or no longer needed medications. 

The event will be held in the north parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th St., Hays.

In April of 2023, 4,497 law enforcement agencies nationwide hosted 4,955 collection sites, and collected 663,725 pounds of unused medications. 

Since the inception of the Drug Take Back Day, 17,300,454 pounds of medications have been safely disposed of.&nbsp;

The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit is encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting. 

Items that will be accepted are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Prescription medications can be disposed of in the original container or placed in a Ziploc bag. 

Please note that liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted&nbsp;

Unused prescription drugs Take Back Day is Oct. 28 in Ellis County

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Volleyball ended a long losing streak on their home floor to Washburn on Tuesday night&nbsp; with a four-set victory. It was the first win over the Ichabods in Hays since 2004, snapping a 16-match skid to the Ichabods in Hays. It also snapped a 14-game losing skid to the Ichabods overall, which dated back to the 2015 season when FHSU won in Topeka.

Fort Hays State took the opening set by a score of 25-19, only to see No. 25 ranked Washburn bounce back to tie the match with a 25-17 result in set two. The Tigers took the pivotal third set, 25-23, by rallying for the final two points of the set to break a 23-23 stalemate. They went on to seal the deal in the fourth set, winning 25-22.

The win snapped a 47-match losing skid to AVCA Top 25 ranked opponents for FHSU, which dated back to 2016 when the Tigers knocked off a No. 21 ranked Northwest Missouri State team in Maryville on November 5. FHSU also defeated a No. 6 ranked Central Missouri team earlier that 2016 season on September 30, which was its last win over a Top 25-ranked team in Hays.

The Tigers were able to limit the Ichabods to just an .024 hitting percentage in the first set, forcing 10 attack errors. Half of those hitting errors came in the form of five Tiger blocks in the set, headed by Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;with three as she sealed the set with a solo block.

The Washburn attack quickly heated in the second set, hitting .333 as a team with 13 kills to just two errors. FHSU had its best attacking set of the night (.211), but it was not enough to offset a strong set from a WU team that also put down five service aces in the set.

The Tigers regrouped and battled through a close third set. Neither team led by more than two until FHSU used a 4-0 burst to take an 18-14 lead. Washburn fought back to eventually draw even with FHSU at 22-22 and the teams traded another pair of points to reach 23-23. Washburn helped FHSU's cause with a service error, then Reeves was big on the block again sealing the third set by creating a wall with Riley Tinder&nbsp;to give FHSU a 2-1 lead in the match. FHSU benefitted from nine attack and six service errors by WU in the set. The Tigers needed only 10 kills in the set to offset the 15 Ichabod errors, led by Gracie Rains&nbsp;with four in the frame. Washburn held a slight attacking edge in the set, .152 to .143.

Fort Hays State held Washburn under .100 on attack percentage for the second time in the match for their match-sealing fourth set win. The Tigers outhit the Ichabods .159 to .068 in the set, holding a 15-11 edge in kills. Both teams had eight attacking errors in the set. Down 15-14 in the set, the Tigers rallied for five straight points to a 19-15 lead. Washburn did not go quietly, rallying for four straight points to draw back even at 19-19. Kills from Riley Tinder&nbsp;and Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;triggered another 4-0 run by the Tigers, capped by a WU attack error and service ace from Caiya Stucky. Washburn rallied again for three straight points, getting back within one at 23-22, but Tinder put down her fourth kill of the set and Claire Olson&nbsp;put the match away with another kill to end the long drought against the Ichabods in Hays.

Rains led the way for FHSU in kills with 14, while Tinder added 13. Reeves was big at the net on defense with seven blocks, just one shy of her season high eight that she has reached twice. Stucky distributed 39 assists and Brooke Hyland&nbsp;produced a team-best 22 digs. Stucky and Tinder both had double-doubles as Stucky added 10 digs to her assist total and Tinder added 15 digs to her kill total.

Rylee Unruh paced a cluster of three Ichabods that reached double figures in kills, leading the team with 12. Rachel Schwensen and Jalyn Stevenson each added 11. Corinna McMullen topped a two-setter look from Washburn with 23 assists, followed by 21 from Sydney Conner. McMullen finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 16 digs to her assist total. Austin Broadie led WU in blocks with eight.

Fort Hays State improved to 10-14 overall and 4-11 in the MIAA with the win, while Washburn moved to 14-7 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA. FHSU looks for a winning record at home this season when it plays host to Newman University for Senior Night on Thursday (Oct. 26). The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

They went on to seal the deal in the fourth set, winning 25-22.The win snapped a 47-match losing skid to AVCA Top 25 ranked opponents for FHSU, which dated back to 2016 when the Tigers knocked off a No. 21 ranked Northwest Missouri State team in Maryville on November 5. FHSU also defeated a No. 6 ranked Central Missouri team earlier that 2016 season on September 30, which was its last win over a Top 25-ranked team in Hays.The Tigers were able to limit the Ichabods to just an .024 hitting percentage in the first set, forcing 10 attack errors. Half of those hitting errors came in the form of five Tiger blocks in the set, headed by Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;with three as she sealed the set with a solo block.The Washburn attack quickly heated in the second set, hitting .333 as a team with 13 kills to just two errors. FHSU had its best attacking set of the night (.211), but it was not enough to offset a strong set from a WU team that also put down five service aces in the set.The Tigers regrouped and battled through a close third set. Neither team led by more than two until FHSU used a 4-0 burst to take an 18-14 lead. Washburn fought back to eventually draw even with FHSU at 22-22 and the teams traded another pair of points to reach 23-23. Washburn helped FHSU's cause with a service error, then Reeves was big on the block again sealing the third set by creating a wall with Riley Tinder&nbsp;to give FHSU a 2-1 lead in the match. FHSU benefitted from nine attack and six service errors by WU in the set. The Tigers needed only 10 kills in the set to offset the 15 Ichabod errors, led by Gracie Rains&nbsp;with four in the frame. Down 15-14 in the set, the Tigers rallied for five straight points to a 19-15 lead. Washburn did not go quietly, rallying for four straight points to draw back even at 19-19. Kills from Riley Tinder&nbsp;and Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;triggered another 4-0 run by the Tigers, capped by a WU attack error and service ace from Caiya Stucky. Washburn rallied again for three straight points, getting back within one at 23-22, but Tinder put down her fourth kill of the set and Claire Olson&nbsp;put the match away with another kill to end the long drought against the Ichabods in Hays.Rains led the way for FHSU in kills with 14, while Tinder added 13. Reeves was big at the net on defense with seven blocks, just one shy of her season high eight that she has reached twice. Stucky distributed 39 assists and Brooke Hyland&nbsp;produced a team-best 22 digs. Stucky and Tinder both had double-doubles as Stucky added 10 digs to her assist total and Tinder added 15 digs to her kill total.Rylee Unruh paced a cluster of three Ichabods that reached double figures in kills, leading the team with 12. Rachel Schwensen and Jalyn Stevenson each added 11. Corinna McMullen topped a two-setter look from Washburn with 23 assists, followed by 21 from Sydney Conner. McMullen finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 16 digs to her assist total. FHSU will take on its second-straight nationally ranked opponent when its hosts Washburn on Friday night in Hays. The Ichabods are up to No. 6 in the latest poll, currently at 14-1-1 overall on the season. FHSU and Washburn met earlier this season in a non-conference match in Topeka, which went the way of Washburn by a score of 2-1. The Ichabods were not ranked yet when that contest happened on September 22. FHSU looks to extend its win streak against WU in Hays, which currently sits at four-straight matches going back to 2018.

This week will prove to be an exciting chase for the MIAA regular season title. Fort Hays State and No. 15 ranked Central Missouri are tied for second place in the MIAA standings, only a game back of Washburn. Washburn is 8-0-1 in MIAA play, while FHSU and UCM are both 7-1-1. The Tigers are looking to pull back even with Washburn for first place in the standings after keeping pace at the top the past two weeks. OSAGE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on drug allegations.

Just after 11:30p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;October 22, a sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 75 Highway in Osage County for an alleged traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells. During the stop, the deputy located illegal narcotics.

A passenger in the vehicle, Selena M. Servantez, 27, of Topeka, was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of possession of fentanyl,&nbsp;methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and Traffic in contraband in a correctional facility.

On October 22, the Reno County Sheriff's Office notified the Game Warden of a deer laying in a roadway near Woodberry Road and W 125th Street North that appeared to have been shot and dumped on the border of Reno and Harvey Counties, according to a social media report from the game wardens.

Investigators recovered three slugs from the deer, multiple rimfire casings and two spent buckshot shotshells. 

Warden's are requesting the public's help to identify the subjects behind this criminal activity.

Mark Alan Beardslee, age 61, of Salina, KS, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.&nbsp;

Mark grew up in Hays, KS, where he attended Hays High School and Fort Hays State University. He lived in Bremerton, WA, Lawrence, KS, eventually settling in Salina. He enjoyed photography, painting, fishing, and billiards.&nbsp;

Mark is survived by his sisters, Kelly Ludlow of Salina, and Nancy Howard of Lawrence; his nieces, Rachel Ludlow of Glenwood, IA, Shirley Howard of Lawrence; and his nephew, Elvis Howard, also of Lawrence.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Shirley (McElfresh) Beardslee, and his nephew, Ryan Ludlow, all of Hays, KS.&nbsp;

Our family is grateful to know that Mark is finally at peace. He will be dearly missed.&nbsp;

Mark will be laid to rest at Fairport Cemetery in Russell County, KS. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date.&nbsp;

Originally slated for Thursday, October 26 the event will now be held on Thursday, November 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.,&nbsp;The Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering, 2350 E. 8th St., Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The decision to reschedule the event was made to ensure that as many interested parties as possible have the opportunity to attend. This change aims to accommodate conflicts with other community events, ensuring that childcare providers from across northwest Kansas can participate.&nbsp;

The Professional Development Series welcomes all area child care providers to join in an enriching evening featuring Kaley Conner, Manager of Education and Outreach from High Plains Mental Health Center, as the guest speaker. The focal point of the workshop will be "Stress Management and Self-Care for Providers."&nbsp;

Attendees will gain invaluable insights into stress management, differentiating between typical and destructive stress pathways, recognizing warning signs of unhealthy stress, implementing self-care practices to enhance resilience, and acquiring skills to identify warning signs in the children they serve, as well as effective communication with children's guardians. &nbsp;

Participation in this event will provide attendees with 1.5 hours of credit toward their annual recertification requirements.&nbsp;

Date change made for child care provider development meeting by Hays Chamber

Kenneth J. “Kenny” Soukup passed away on October 22,2023, at his home in Wilson, KS, at the age of 76. He was born on April 25, 1947, to Adolph and Helen (Podlena) Soukup in Ellsworth, KS. 

He was married on May 7, 1971, to Judith Pasek. They were blessed with four children: Kim, Kyle, Kenetta, and Kory.

Kenny grew up in Wilson and was president of his graduating class of 1965 at Wilson High School. 

He worked for the oilfield in his early years, Lucas Hay Plant, and the Sylvan Sale Barn for many years. Kenny was known as the town’s unofficial “Marshall” as he would be seen driving his green Lincoln around town every day. He loved watching Jeopardy, biscuits and gravy, and taking naps. He was proud of his country and was a friend to everyone.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Judith Soukup of the home in Wilson; daughters, Kim (Herbie) Shumaker of Russell, KS and Kenetta Soukup of Norton, KS; brother, Matty (Darlene) Soukup of Salina, KS; five grandchildren, Chelsi Muleski, Ashly and Tyler McReynolds, and Herbie and Klaudia Shumaker; and three great-grandchildren, Temperance and Rylee McReynolds and Henry Muleski.

Kenny is preceded in death by his parents; sons, Kordele “Kory” Soukup and Kyle Soukup; brother, Kerry Soukup; and sister, Kayleen Bacon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 10 a.m. with a rosary service at 9 a.m. at the funeral home in Wilson. There will be no public visitation.

Kenneth J. 'Kenny' Soukup

Jack Laverne Cornett was born on July 28, 1955, in Belleville, Kansas, the son of Glen V. and Erma J. (Blackburn) Cornett. 

Jack grew up on the family farm, and attended country school until the 3rd&nbsp;grade, and then Belleville, graduating from Belleville High School with class of 1973. He then went onto Kansas State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in ag economics.

He was united in marriage to Sheila M. Rhine on July 27, 1986, in Belleville.

He was a lifelong farmer/stockman in the Belleville and Scandia areas.

Jack passed away on October 22, 2023, at the age of 68 years, 2 months, and 24 days.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Erma Cornett.

He will be forever remembered by his wife Sheila, daughter Stephanie Gillig and her husband Jason of Salina, grandchildren Zachary, Samantha, and Alexander Gillig; sisters Kathy Fielder (Ron), Connie Meyer (Paul), Shirley Blackburn (Patrick) and Janet Moeller (Ken). Jack is also survived by his brother-in-law Tim Rhine (Debbie), and sisters-in-law Natalie Livingston (Ed) and Lori Caspers (Jim), nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 9:30 a.m., at the Wesleyan Church in Concordia, Kansas, with Pastor David Redmond officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Grove Cemetery, rural Scandia, Kansas.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 24, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville.

 </figure>Jack Laverne Cornett was born on July 28, 1955, in Belleville, Kansas, the son of Glen V. and Erma J. (Blackburn) Cornett. Jack grew up on the family farm, and attended country school until the 3rd&nbsp;grade, and then Belleville, graduating from Belleville High School with class of 1973. He then went onto Kansas State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in ag economics.He was united in marriage to Sheila M. Rhine on July 27, 1986, in Belleville.He was a lifelong farmer/stockman in the Belleville and Scandia areas.Jack passed away on October 22, 2023, at the age of 68 years, 2 months, and 24 days.He is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Erma Cornett.He will be forever remembered by his wife Sheila, daughter Stephanie Gillig and her husband Jason of Salina, grandchildren Zachary, Samantha, and Alexander Gillig; sisters Kathy Fielder (Ron), Connie Meyer (Paul), Shirley Blackburn (Patrick) and Janet Moeller (Ken). Jack is also survived by his brother-in-law Tim Rhine (Debbie), and sisters-in-law Natalie Livingston (Ed) and Lori Caspers (Jim), nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 9:30 a.m., at the Wesleyan Church in Concordia, Kansas, with Pastor David Redmond officiating. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration Monday designated 31&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/raimondo-tech-hubs-biotech-computer-chips-f2ed91786be265099eec274777aa5c5b">technology hubs</a>&nbsp;touching Kansas, Missouri, 30 other states and Puerto Rico to help spur innovation and create jobs in the industries that are concentrated in these areas.

President Joe Biden made the announcement at the White House with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

“No matter where I go or who I meet with — CEOs, governors, senators, congresspeople, university presidents — everyone wants to tell me about their application and how excited they are,” said Raimondo.

The tech hubs are the result of a process Raimondo's department launched in May to distribute a total of $500 million in grants to cities.

The $500 million came from a $10 billion authorization in last year’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-covid-science-technology-health-fdcb2db42f91dcdbdd844d6dd463f95a">CHIPS and Science Act</a>&nbsp;to stimulate investments in new technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and biotech. It’s an attempt to expand tech investment that is largely concentrated around a few U.S. cities — Austin, Texas; Boston; New York; San Francisco; and Seattle — to the rest of the country.

Custom Creations was the award winner of the North Central Regional Award in the category of Non-Traditional Talent Pool for its innovation of supporting people with developmental disabilities.

DSNWK’s Custom Creations accepted the award at the Department of Commerce’s statewide awards banquet on October 12 in Wichita.

The Kansas Business Awards recognize the many businesses and business people throughout the state that are working hard to build their companies and at the same time contributing to their community as valuable resources.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on child sex allegations.

On October 19, 2023, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division conducted an investigation into child sex crimes, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.

Deputies arrested 39-year-old Craig H. Miller, 39, of Topeka and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of attempted electronic solicitation of a child, attempted indecent liberties with a child, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on child sex allegations.On October 19, 2023, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division conducted an investigation into child sex crimes, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.Deputies arrested 39-year-old Craig H. Miller, 39, of Topeka and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of attempted electronic solicitation of a child, attempted indecent liberties with a child, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

James Dennis “Jim” Riordan, age 72 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;Jim was born on February 12, 1951 at Detroit, Michigan to John and Alta Lee Riordan, and grew up in South Lyon, Michigan. 

&nbsp;Jim attended college at the University of Idaho, where he also was on the University of Idaho Vandals Football Team. &nbsp;He later worked as a lumberjack in Idaho for a number of years prior to coming to Great Bend, Kansas. Jim worked in the Oilfield for over 50 years as a driller for LD Davis Drilling, Duke Drilling, and Val Energy and as a casing crew operator for Murray Casing, all of Great Bend. &nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Ginger Richter on November 25, 1978 at Great Bend, Kansas. Jim loved his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, football, and was a lover of animals.

Survivors include his wife, Ginger Riordan of Great Bend; two sons: &nbsp;Evan Riordan (and Kelly Regan) of Great Bend and Hunter Riordan (and Kestrel Barnes) of Lawrence, Kansas; one daughter, Erin Riordan of Great Bend; 10 nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Mocha. &nbsp;

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and all five of his siblings: &nbsp;John Riordan, Janet Brown, Barb Blandin, Patrick Riordan, and Joe Riordan.

Cremation has been chosen and no services or viewing are planned at this time. 

&nbsp;The family requests that Memorial Contributions be directed to the Golden Belt Humane Society at Great Bend, Kansas to honor his love of animals.

LARNED – Tony Martinez, 63, passed away October 22, 2023 in Wichita, KS.

He was born October 13, 1960 in San Antonio, TX, the son of Rodolfo Martinez, Sr. and Marylou Mendez. He was a longtime resident of Larned, KS, meeting Tracy in 2000 and the couple married on December 31, 2005.&nbsp;

They spent more than two decades together, raising their blended family, starting with Tony’s daughter, Brandi and Tracy’s niece, Tiasha, as well as enjoying weekend visits from Tony’s son, Anthony, and daughter Esperanza. They were soon joined by the couple’s daughter Nydia, and sons Andres and Aemilio. &nbsp;

Tony knew no stranger. He was an extremely laid-back back and friendly person. He welcomed everyone like family to his home. He would do anything to help if he could. &nbsp;Familia was everything to him, and he helped take care of many nieces and nephews, over the years. He liked to help out his mother-in-law by mowing her big yard, or taking her to visit her mother in Hutchinson. Conversations had (in Spanish, of course) by Tony, Abby and Grandma Basilia were always lively and filled with laughter. &nbsp; &nbsp;

He relished telling stories about his life in San Antonio. A kid at heart, he often spent his time outdoors, playing basketball and soccer with his kids. Or, he could be spotted out exploring, looking for treasures with his metal detector. At home, the couch was Tony’s comfort spot, where he enjoyed watching crime shows, working on Sudoku Puzzles, and listening to Spanish Music. He also enjoyed watching movies. “Over the Top” was an all-time favorite for him and his son, Jacob.&nbsp;

At a young age, Tony would travel with his family to Wisconsin and help them with seasonal work. As he got older he lived in Plainview, Texas, working on oil rigs and at meat packing plants. Later, he moved closer to his mother in Great Bend, KS, to be close to his disabled brother. He was employed by Sunflower Diversified Services and Pathways a total of 13 years in Great Bend. He then worked at Larned State Hospital for 18 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Tracy, Larned; his children Emily Soto, Plainview, TX; Brandi Martinez (Jesus Ramirez), Macksville, KS; Tiasha Perez, Houston TX; &nbsp;Anthony Martinez (Hailey Garman), Littlestown, PA; Esperanza Palmer (Dillion Schmidt), Hays, KS; Daughter Nydia, Sons Andres and Aemilio Martinez, all of Larned; grandchildren, Luna, Mateo and Leo; &nbsp;brothers, Salvador (Edna) Martinez, Plainview, TX; Augie (Sherry) Martinez, Spokane WA; Javier Martinez, Altus OK; Steve (Dora) Martinez, Hollis OK; Larry (Luz Maria)&nbsp;Martinez, Amarillo TX; Noel Martinez, Great Bend, KS; sister Ruby (Adam) Perez, Lakin, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss him dearly. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jacob Soto, and two brothers, Rodolfo Martinez Jr, and David Martinez.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Mike Barton presiding. &nbsp;Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. &nbsp;

February 25, 1943 ~ October 20, 2023 (age 80)

Longtime Goodland resident, Sharon L. David, age 80, passed away Friday, October 20, 2023 in Thornton, Colorado. Sharon was born February 25, 1943 to Francis Arthur and Mary Elizabeth (Newachek) David in Denver, Colorado. 

They moved to Goodland in 1948, where Sharon grew up and went to school, graduating from Goodland High School in 1961.

Sharon worked as an insurance clerk at Northwest Kansas Medical Center and Dr. Kenneth D. Austin for 15 years. She was a secretary for Cole Auction and Real Estate for a little over 17 years, retiring in 2001.&nbsp;

In her younger years, Sharon enjoyed traveling for bowling and collecting salt and pepper shakers and most of all looking after and spending time with her family and friends. She spent her time helping people with whatever they needed. She worked as a secretary for Harrison Reality, Dr. Swinehart, Bateman Funeral Home and Serendipity Flower Shop until the present.&nbsp;

Sharon is survived by her son Alan (Teresa) David of Goodland; granddaughters Nicole Kinen of Wray, CO and Lexi (Bret) Mangan of Goodland; grandson Josh David of Goodland; great-grandchildren Kinley and Landree Kinen and Addisyn and Rhett Mangan; sister Judy (Robert) McKnight; nieces, nephews and many more family and friends.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents Francis and Mary, grandparents, brother Richard and sister Marylyn Engel. &nbsp;

Funeral service will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street, Goodland. Interment following the service at 12:30 p.m. MT at the Winona Cemetery, Winona Kanas. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home.
