Alicia Hammeke Knight has been named the incoming assistant principal of Holy Family Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year.

Knight has been a Holy Family Elementary parent for five years and is an alumnus of Holy Family Elementary and Thomas Moore Prep-Marian, making her familiar with Catholic values.

"In education, we're looking at whole people, especially when it comes to our faith and Catholic-based school," Knight said. "I'm not just looking at a student academically. We're trying to develop these children as a whole being."

Knight graduated from TMP in 2009 and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in special education from Fort Hays State University in 2014.&nbsp;

Knight earned her English for speakers of other languages endorsement and taught in Gardner from 2014 to 2017. She returned to Hays and began teaching fourth and fifth grade at O'Loughlin Elementary School in 2017.

"I've said it all along, Hays has the best schools, we have such a beautiful town, and O'Loughlin is wonderful... it'll be hard to leave," Knight said.

She earned her master’s degree in education administration from Fort Hays State University in 2023 and is eager to step into her new role at Holy Family Elementary.

Knight said she plans to work closely with Principal Mandy Meagher and uphold the school’s Catholic mission. She added she greatly admires her father, Curtis Hammeke, who was <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/d52a81f5-a671-43dc-91e3-b8f9dc7e633b">recently appointed as the new president of Hays Catholic Schools</a>.

"I really look up to him and see a lot of positive qualities he has, which was part of my inspiration," she said.

Holy Family Elementary welcomes new assistant principal

North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St., will host an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox recipient at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.

Area churches, organizations, and individuals will have the opportunity to hear from Lorena Surducan, who, as a young child in Romania, received a shoebox gift.&nbsp;“This gift, which included a toy that Lorena had been praying for, confirmed Lorena's trust in God and sustained her through a childhood of hunger and poverty,” a news release said.

Light refreshments and door prizes will be a part of the evening.

Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization headquartered in Boone, N.C.

Each year thousands of individuals fill simple shoeboxes with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene products. These shoeboxes are then collected and shipped to needy children around the world. For many children, this is the first gift they have ever received, said Rachel Albin of Hays, Northwest Kansas area director for OCC.

Each shoebox also contains a pamphlet telling the child about Jesus. For many children, this is also the first time they have ever heard of Jesus, she added.

Chase Drennon and Heuer Brungardt both qualified for the 2A State Tournament. 

Drennon finished 6th at Monday's Wichita County 2A Regional at the Wichita County Municipal Golf Course. The junior finished 9-over-par. Brungardt finished 9th at 11-over-par.


Hoxie won the team title with Syracuse second and Hill City third. All three qualify for state as a team.

The 2A State Tournament begins Monday, May 26th at the&nbsp;Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

⛳ TMP-Marian's Drennon, Brungardt qualify for state

Norma Lea Rogers of Hays, KS, formerly of Stockton, KS,
passed away on May 17, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in Hays at the age
of 98. 

Norma was born on January 3, 1927, in Hill City, Kansas, to Dale and Margaret (Scott) Scott. She married Clair Joseph Rogers on October 14, 1946. Together they were blessed with three children: Clair Jr., Carol, and Tina.

Norma grew up in Hill City and attended school through the 8th grade. She worked for many years as a cook at Fort Hays State University and later in housekeeping at St. Anthony’s Hospital (now Hays Med). She was known for her strong work ethic, love of a tidy space, and enjoyment in cleaning motels. Norma had a spirited personality — she loved soap operas, reading books, visiting with friends and family, singing, yodeling, and driving her little car fast.

She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays, a dedicated member of the VFW Auxiliary, and volunteered as a “Yellow Coat.”

Norma is survived by her son, Clair Rogers Jr. (Alberta) of Liebenthal, KS; Carol Mongeau (Martin) of Stockton, KS; and Tina Putz of Stockton, KS; grandchildren: John (Anne) Rogers, Julie Klein (Jeff Springer), Steven Mongeau, James (Shannon) Mongeau, Kylie Putz, Kelsie Putz (Kody Dixon), Lindsey Mongeau; great-grandchildren: Dakota Rogers (Morgan Feemster), Cheyenne Rogers (Adam Polly), Taylor Rogers, Riley Rogers, Sierra Wilson (Daniel Bennett), Jordan Wilson, Alesha Rogers, Ryan Mongeau, Garrison Mongeau, Grayson Mongeau, Grandon Mongeau, Treyvin Mongeau, Lexi Springer, Kaylee Springer, Cami Springer, and Thomas Dixon; and great-great-grandchildren: Jaxxon, Ashton, Sylus, Braxten, Zaylee, and Braven.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair Sr.; siblings: siblings: Ernest, Alberta, Garland, Doug, Donna, Kenneth and Doyle; and grandsons, Michael and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 10:30AM at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton.&nbsp;Visitation
will be held on Tuesday, 4-8PM with a Vigil &amp; Rosary Service at 7PM at the
funeral home in Stockton.

Norma Lea Rogers

DeVane Awyn Cunningham, 96, of
Stockton, KS, passed away on May 19, 2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in
Plainville, KS. He was born on the family farm in rural Phillips County on
March 27, 1929, to Darrell and Maybelle (Dunlap) Cunningham.

DeVane began his education at
the nearby one-room schoolhouse, the same school his father had attended. He
later went on to Stockton High School, where he was affectionately known to
friends and cousins as “Shorty.” He graduated in 1947. It was during high
school that he met Doris Jean Buss, whom he married in 1948. Together they
raised three children: Denise, Jan, and Dana. Following Doris’s passing in
1997, DeVane married Ellen Rogers. They shared over twenty years together until
her passing in 2021.

DeVane was a carpenter by
trade and spent many years working for his father-in-law Earl Buss, building
and renovating homes in the Stockton area. Upon Earl’s retirement, he began his
own business. Over the course of his career, he built most of the new homes in
Stockton, until his retirement around age 70. His largest project was the Ralph
and Joanna Johnson home, where they spent nine months adding on to and
renovating the 1910 Italian Mansard-style house. His favorite home was the
Clifford Roy home, west of Stockton. He built his own home in 1951 and lived
there for 74 years, until February of this year.

DeVane was a member of the
United Methodist Church and was baptized there as an adult in the early 1970’s.
He served on several church boards over the years. In retirement, he
reluctantly allowed his name to be used as a write-in candidate for the City
Commission – only to receive more votes than any listed candidate. He served as
a City Councilman (1993-2003) as well as the Mayor of Stockton. Until recently,
he remained active on the Stockton Housing Authority Board.

During retirement, DeVane
enjoyed coffee time with his friends at the bowling alley, watching the Kansas City
Chiefs and Kansas State Wildcat football games, and most frequently, his TV was
tuned to Fox News.

DeVane was well-liked and
admired by all – young and old, men and women alike. Known especially for his
charm and wit, and in later years for his ever-present farmer overalls and walking
stick. Those who knew him well know he could talk endlessly about growing up on
the farm, the details and stories of generations of families who made up the
Bow Creek community. It was clear, at his core, he was always the farm boy from
Bow Creek, and that became the foundation underlying all the other hats he wore
in his life.

He was preceded in death by
his parents; wives, Doris and Ellen; and brother, Darrell Jr. 

He is survived by his brother,
Don (Jane) of Stockton; children, Denise (Allan) Edwards of Houston. TX, Jan
Cunningham of Stockton, and Dana ( JoLeen) of Hays, KS; five grandchildren: Joy
(Jeff) Bashus, J. Christian Smilanic, Amanda (Reid) Bullock, Rachel (Charles)
Carlson, and Aaron Cunningham; and five great-grandsons: Harrison, Callen, Asher,
Benson and Theodore. 

A funeral service will be held
on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 10AM at the funeral home in Stockton. Burial will
follow in the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday with the
family receiving time 6 until 8PM at the funeral home.

DeVane Awyn Cunningham

SPEARVILLE
– The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team made quick work of Elkhart in their
2-1A regional opener Monday afternoon at Tom Feist Field. The Monarchs sent 16
to plate in a 12-run first then added seven runs in the second for the 19-0
victory. The game was called after the top of the third by run rule.

Brooke
Koeningsman hit a 3-run homer to get the Monarchs (25-2) on the board in the first
inning. She finished 3-for-3 with six RBIs. 

Nine
of the 12 runs in the first came with two outs. Teagan Gottschalk drove in two

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - MIAA co-Pitcher of the Year Ty Riley was named second team All-Central Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), announced Friday (May 16).

Riley turned in a stellar senior season, ranking second in Division II with a school-record 115 strikeouts. The righty posted an ERA of 3.11 and a record of 9-1 across 16 outings (15 starts). He posted an opposing batting average of .188, second-best in the MIAA.

The Bentonville, Ark. native ranked 12th in Division II in hits allowed per nine innings (6.22), while his 11.17 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd in the country and his nine wins were second-most in the MIAA and 25th-most in DII.

Riley struck out 16 batters in a game against Colorado-Colorado Springs, second-most in a game by a DII pitcher this season. He racked up seven quality starts and tossed an MIAA-best four complete games, including one nine-inning shutout.

Riley is the first Tiger to earn All-Region status since 2015 (Kevin Czarnecki) and is the first starting pitcher to earn All-Region accolades since 2006 (Bobby Lewton).

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 GMC Sierra driven by a Richard G&nbsp;Needy, 59, Smithburg, Maryland, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of Yocemento Avenue.

The pickup traveled off the road to the left into the ditch, rolled for an unknown number of times, continued rolling over the guardrail and coming to rest in the median.

EMS transported&nbsp;Needy and passengers Dale E&nbsp;Freed, 66 and&nbsp;Knepp, Gary L. Knepp, 78, both of Newport, Pennsylvania, to Hays Medical Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

93, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Good
Samaritan Society of Ellis.&nbsp;

&nbsp;She was born October 23, 1931, in Hays, Kansas to Otto and Caroline (Schafer)
Huber.&nbsp; She married Vernon “Vern” Herrman on May 10, 1951, in Hays.&nbsp;
He preceded her in death on January 27, 2016. 

Dorothy was a bookkeeper and office manager for Vern Herrman Motor Supply
working with her husband for many years.&nbsp; She was an AVON Cosmetic
Representative for many years and also worked for Bob’s Big Pencils. 

She grew up on the family farm one mile north of Ellis with her parents and
three sisters.&nbsp; She was a 1949 graduate of Ellis High School and the 1949
Homecoming Queen.

She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hays, and enjoyed boating,
camping, and fishing.&nbsp; She was an excellent trap shooter, and received
many awards for her talent.&nbsp; Her pride and joy was her family and spending
time with them.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, John Herrman and wife, Terri, Dardenne
Prairie, MO; David Herrman and wife, Deanna, Hays, KS; Ron Herrman and wife,
Cheryl, Russell, KS; Marc Herrman, Hays, KS; her sister, Phyllis Schuster,
Federal Heights, CO; her brothers-in-law, John Linton, Potomac, MD; Gary
Hindman, Salina, KS; her ten grandchildren; her twenty two great grandchildren;
and her three great great grandchildren.

&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Caroline Huber; her husband,
Vern Herrman; her daughter, Kathleen Schukman; her son-in-law, Kevin Schukman;

NEW ORLEANS - Six Fort Hays State track and field athletes earned nine All-Region honors during the 2024-25 season, awarded by the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The men's team had four individuals recognized with six awards, while the women's team had two individuals honored with three awards.

The top five individuals in each event from each region earn All-Region distinction, in addition to each member of the region's top three relay teams.

All-Region award winners from the women's team include Annabeth Baalmann in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault and Emily Diercks in the outdoor 10,000m run. The men were represented by Nolan Churchman in the indoor heptathlon, outdoor decathlon and outdoor long jump, Josiah Ball in the outdoor pole vault, Jacob Clark in the indoor pole vault and Toby Wahlmeier in the outdoor 200m dash.

Nolan Churchman highlighted the list with three All-Central Region honors, picking up the award in the indoor heptathlon and twice outdoors in the long jump and the decathlon. Churchman has now earned 12 All-Region honors in his career, including four in the heptathlon and three in the decathlon. This is his first-such honor in the long jump.

He earned the heptathlon award with a mark of 5,324 which ranked fifth nationally in the regular season before he placed third at the National Championships with a school-record total of 5,534. Churchman ranks seventh in the country in the decathlon with a mark of 7,138, while his career-best long jump of 24-7 (7.49m) ranks 14th nationally.

Jacob Clark achieved his fifth All-Region honor in the indoor pole vault thanks to a top clearance of 17-2.75 (5.25m), matching his indoor career best. The five-time All-American has been named All-Region three times indoors and twice outdoors.

Annabeth Baalmann now has three All-Region awards in her career after picking up the honor in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. The junior broke the school record with a top indoor clearance of 14-0.5 (4.28m) before matching that effort to win the MIAA Outdoor Championships. She ranks third in Division II heading into the Outdoor National Championships.

Emily Diercks is now a two-time All-Region honoree after achieving the award in cross country and in the outdoor 10,000m run. Diercks set the school record in the 10,000m run this season, ranking 20th in Division II with a time of 34:46.53. After competing at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships in the fall, Diercks will also compete at the Outdoor National Championships later this week.

Josiah Ball earned his first All-Region honor in the outdoor pole vault after clearing a personal-best 16-7.5 (5.07m) in the final weekend of the regular season. The freshman ranks 17th in Division II this season and will compete at his first National Championships later this week.

The main threats could be hail up to
the size of quarters and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

The storm that brought tornadoes and large hail to other parts of the state only dropped .16 inches of rain on Hays, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

The high today is forecast to be 82. The forecast calls for a windy day on Tuesday with a high of 75.

Chances for rain and thunderstorms return Thursday night and Friday and will remain in the forecast through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Hays has received .73 inches of rain in May. It averages 3.33 inches of rain for May. Year to date, Hays has received 6.43 inches of rain. That compares to an average of 7.92 inches by the end of May.

GOVE COUNTY —Spring storms brought hail, heavy rain, damaging winds and numerous tornadoes to portions of Kansas on Sunday. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings in Cheyenne, Scott, Logan, Gove, Edwards, Pawnee, Kiowa, Stafford, Pratt and Reno&nbsp; Counties on Sunday.

A tornado in Grinnell Sunday caused damage to both the electric and gas systems in the small Gove County community, according to Midwest Energy. There were roughly 330 customers without power, and the utility closed off the gas system to inspect for additional damage and make repairs.&nbsp;

The utility "identified 15 poles down (twelve 34.5 kV poles west of town, and three 115kV transmission structures), as well as damage in Grinnell city limits."&nbsp; Additional damage is likely. "Crews will be working on these into Monday. .Gas&nbsp;crews were conducting leak surveys in town and in rural areas around Grinnell, and could attempt gas restoration Monday morning where safe to do so. There are no reports of serious injury. Interstate 70 exit 85 remains closed at Grinnell due to tornado damage and downed powerlines in town, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Late Sunday afternoon, tornadoes rolled through portions of Scott County near the rural community of Modoc damaging power lines, rail road cars, oil tank batteries and an abandoned house, according to the Scott County Sheriff.&nbsp; &nbsp;Another tornado was reported at the Scott County Lake Park. Emergency responders found no damage from the storm in that area. There were no reports of injuries.

Cheyenne County had tornado damage west and south west of St. Francis, according to Emergency Management Director Ryan Murray. Two farmsteads had significant damage to outbuildings. No occupied homes were destroyed, and there were no injuries or fatalities. Murray also said Cheyenne County had reports of center pivot damage in the same area SW of St. Francis.

&nbsp;Due to the severe weather eastbound&nbsp; Interstate 70 was temporarily closed from Colby to Grinnell and Westbound Interstate 70 closed from Hays to Grinnell due to downed power lines.&nbsp;

Reno County emergency crews are assessing widespread damage after a tornado tore through rural areas and the city of Plevna on Sunday leaving downed trees, damaged homes, and snapped utility poles in its wake.

The tornado touched down around 11:50 p.m. north of Turon, cutting a destructive path through the countryside before striking Plevna. It then continued approximately five miles northeast of the city before dissipating.

Alvin James Stenzel, 68, Hays, passed away Saturday, May 17,
2025 at HaysMed with his sisters by his side.

He was born October 20, 1956 in Ness City, Kansas, to
Clarence and Cyrilla (Meis) Stenzel.&nbsp; He
graduated from Ness City High School and attended Cowley County Community
College on a basketball scholarship.&nbsp;
Alvin lived in the Wichita area until moving to Hays twenty years ago to
be closer to family.&nbsp; He retired from
Hays Professional Fire Equipment.

Alvin is survived by two brothers, Duane (Dixie) Stenzel of
Archie, MO and Lyle (Bridget) Stenzel of Ness City, two sisters, Colleen
(Terry) Schniepp of Cottage Grove, MN and Brenda (Tony) Leiker of Hays, and
many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joanna
Stenzel-Kotz, one brother, Marvin and sister-in-law Donna Stenzel.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 20,
2025 in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City.&nbsp;
Funeral services are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home,

Ellis County parents overwhelmingly said they trust their child care providers, but they wished they were paying less for care, according to a recent survey.

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County received results from the online survey at its meeting on Tuesday.

The survey was taken by 121 people, including parents, child care providers and business people, with parents and child care providers making up the two largest groups of survey respondents.

Of the 60 parents or future parents who responded to the survey, a quarter said they were looking for child care.&nbsp;

Two-thirds of parents said their children are currently enrolled in a licensed child care. One-third said they were not.

Dana Stanton, Childcare Program Specialist with the&nbsp;Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center, said the survey results do not mean those 20 parents have their children in unlicensed child care. She said it could mean a parent is staying home with the children or the children are being cared for by another family member.

More than half of the parents said their children are in an in-home child care. About 19% of children were enrolled in child care centers and 16% were cared for by family members.

Sixty-eight percent of parents responding said they were satisfied with their child care arrangements. When asked what aspects contributed to their satisfaction, 95% said they trusted their children's caregiver.

Stanton said parental preference mirrored child placement. Most parents said they preferred having their children cared for by in-home child care providers.

Seventy-five percent of respondents said they were pleased with the quality of their children's care and education.

Seventy-five percent of parents surveyed said they were dissatisfied with the cost of care. The survey indicated the county's child care costs varied widely, with parents paying $80 to more than $200 per week per child for care.

The respondents said they would prefer to pay $141 to $160 per week per child for care. Stanton said that the price range is low for the cost of care in Ellis County.

Most parents said they needed full-time care Mondays through Fridays, with a few also needing care for school-age children during school breaks and snow days.

Most respondents said they had found child care through word of mouth, not the state child care system, <a href="https://ks.childcareaware.org/">Child Care Aware of Kansas</a>.

Stanton said the child care task force should consider placing more emphasis on using the Child Care Aware online database.

Of the child care providers surveyed, 27% said they did not update their capacity openings with Child Care Aware.

The state resource tracks child care openings across the state and can be searched by community. It only lists licensed providers.&nbsp;

Only four businesses responded to the survey. All four said they have experienced workforce gaps due to a lack of child care for their employees.

Half of all respondents said they had missed work due to child care needs. Twelve people said they had delayed entering or reentering the workforce because of child care needs. Stanton said 12 people is low compared to other communities she has worked with in Kansas, where workers had to plan their careers around child care.

None of the employers said they wanted to offer in-house child care.

The task force has identified a continued need for more infant care in Ellis County. None of the businesses surveyed said they allowed employees to bring infants to work.

One employer said they allowed workers to bring their children to work after school if needed. One employer said they allowed employees to work from home if a worker was experiencing child care issues.

Of the child care providers surveyed, 92% said they accept infants. However, the state limits the number of infants that in-home child care providers can care for.

Only 34% of providers said they were certified to take funds from the Department of Children and Family Services for income-qualified families.

All of the providers surveyed said they offer full-time care Mondays through Fridays. However, many providers offered additional services such as care for school-age children during school breaks or care before or after school.

Sixty-three percent of survey respondents said they thought Ellis County does not have an adequate supply of child care.

"We had more yeses than I thought," Stanton said. "I'm thinking that is a lot of our current providers. We have talked about it in this group. While there may be a need for openings in infant care, we have a lot of in-home providers who have openings."

The number of needed child care spots in Ellis County, as reported by the state, has dramatically decreased since the child care task force was created four years ago. An additional 77 slots are set to open in August with the completion of the Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center.

However, Stanton said of the survey, "It tells us that we're making progress, but there are still some issues."

Ellis County child care survey shows progress, but issues remain

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County and the Chamber in Hays announced a new charitable fund that has been established with the Heartland Community Foundation.

The Chamber board agreed to invest $10,230 in the fund, Sarah Wasinger, Chamber president and CEO, told the task force on Tuesday.

Some of the funds came from unused Chamber checks. The Chamber also opted to donate funds from a child care grant that had been set aside to pay the Chamber for providing administrative support for the task force.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation also provided an additional $2,000 match to the fund.

The fund is not fully endowed, Sarah Meitner, director of the Heartland Community Foundation, said. The task force can grant nonprofits anything over the $10,000 investment.&nbsp;

For community-wide child care needs for in-home or for-profit facilities, the Chamber could serve as a pass-through agency for the grant funds, Meitner said.

Meitner said she hopes the fund will encourage further giving to support child care in the community. This can come in the form of direct donations or estate gifts.

The child care task force will be charged with awarding money from the fund and developing an application process.

"I know it may seem like, 'How are we going to do all of this?'" Meitner said. "But having the bucket is the first step. That's how you can start communicating with donors."

"Getting it started is half the battle," she added.

It provides a mechanism to address preventable water waste by privately-owned wells.&nbsp;Currently, the City of Hays prohibits the following year-round: the washing down of sidewalks, parking lots and driveways; the known loss of water through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems; and the escape of water from private property onto public property such as sidewalks or into the street guttering from landscape irrigation; in addition to outdoor water use between noon and 7:00 p.m. from June 1, 2025 through September 30, 2025.&nbsp;By restricting daytime outdoor water use, including the watering of landscapes and gardens, unnecessary water loss due to wind and evaporation can be reduced, thus conserving the resource for more efficient use.&nbsp;All citizens are encouraged to practice the conservation of natural resources, including water, and look for ways to improve conservation measures in our homes and businesses, both indoors and out. &nbsp;
