North Central and North West Extension Districts and counties of K-State Research and Extension again will be hosting an ONLINE agronomy series, “Crop Talk”, slated to begin Tuesday, February 10 through Tuesday, March 10, which will highlight several topics important to crop producers.  These will be on Tuesdays and each session will be held from Noon to 1:00 p.m. CST. 

In the NC and NW agronomy focused areas, the meetings will feature presentations and comments by K-State Extension faculty to enhance management strategies utilized by crop producers. 

Our KSU extension team has vast experience in crop production and we’re here to help solve and prevent production problems with reliable information. 

Planned topics of discussion include Understanding Flex Leases; Available Soil Water at Planting and Related Management; Wheat conditions and Breeding efforts on Mosaic Viruses; Fungicide Applications in Corn and Sorghum and Insects to watch for in the Field. 

There will also be time for questions between Kansas crop producers and extension specialists at each of the sessions.

'Crop Talk' sessions available online for area farmers in Feb., March

K-State Extension is pleased to announce the continued offering of Becoming a Mom®/Comenzando bien®, a comprehensive prenatal education program serving families in both Ellis County and Barton County. In Ellis County classes begin February 19, 2026. Classes in Barton County will begin April 1. These sessions are available free of charge to all area families.

The program is made possible through strong regional partnerships with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Family Health and March of Dimes In Ellis County toher partners include First Care Clinic, High Plains Mental Health, Early Childhood Connections, Hays Public Library, Feeding Hays, KidLink DSNWK, Jana’s Campaign, Prospectively Healthy, Ellis County Emergency Medical Services. Together, these partners are committed to supporting expectant parents and improving maternal and infant health outcomes across both counties.

Using the evidence-based March of Dimes Becoming a Mom®/Comenzando bien® curriculum, participants and their chosen support person(s) will receive education on physical and emotional health during pregnancy, labor and delivery, infant feeding, infant care, safe sleep, and other timely parenting topics. Each session also connects families with local resources and service providers who support expectant parents and families with young children, helping participants build relationships and awareness of available supports within their own communities.

“I’m incredibly excited about the dedicated instructors and community partners who have come together to bring Becoming a Mom to families in both Ellis and Barton counties,” said Monique Koerner with the Cottonwood Extension District. “Our goal is to create a welcoming space where parents can connect, learn from one another, and feel supported—not only during pregnancy, but well beyond.”

Discussions within the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition also helped shape the program’s focus on mentorship and relationship-building, while involvement from partners across both counties ensures families are personally introduced to the professionals and organizations available to support them. This collaborative approach is designed to make it easier for families to seek help when they need it most.

Becoming a Mom® has a strong track record of success across Kansas. Since 2010, program evaluations conducted through the Kansas Perinatal Community Collaborative model have shown significant improvements in pregnancy and birth outcomes, including reduced rates of preterm birth and low birth weight, higher breastfeeding initiation rates, and lower cesarean rates.

All pregnant women in Ellis and Barton counties are encouraged to attend, regardless of previous pregnancy or parenting experience. Mothers, fathers, and support people are welcome at each class. Participants may choose which sessions to attend, with larger incentives—examples may include a portable crib or infant playmat—available for those who attend at least four of the six classes. Incentives are provided through grants made available by KDHE.

In Ellis County, limited childcare will be available, and a free meal will be provided by Feeding Hays. KOERNER: Becoming a Mom to be offered in Ellis, Barton counties

Are you looking to add a tree to your landscape this spring? Making sure that your tree has the best possible start will help it be able to have a long lifetime of growth and enjoyment for your family.

Here are ten rules for planting trees in a home landscape:

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Select the right tree for the site. K-State has a list of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/recommended-plants/index.html">trees recommended for Kansas available online</a>.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Keep the tree well-watered and in a shady location until planting. When moving the tree, lift it by the root ball or pot – not by the trunk.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Before planting, remove all wires, labels, cords or anything else tied to the plant. Plant the tree on solid ground, not in fill dirt.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dig a hole deep enough so that the tree sits slightly above nursery level. The width should be three times the width of the root ball.

5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Remove all containers from the root ball, including plastic and peat pots. Roll burlap and wire baskets back into the hole, cutting as much of the excess as possible.

6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Backfill the hole with soil that was removed. Make sure the soil is loosened, without clods or clumps.

7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don’t cut back branches of the tree after planting except those that are rubbing or damaged.

8.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Water the tree thoroughly, then once a week for the first season if there is insufficient rainfall.

9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Place mulch 2-4 inches deep around the tree, and cover an area 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball.

10. Stake only when necessary; trees will establish more quickly and grow faster if they are not staked.

By following these steps when planting your new tree, you are giving it the best start to be able to thrive in the years to come.

BOOR: Planting trees

The last few weeks, I have had a great opportunity to work with several classes of 6th grade students using a 4-H curriculum: Mind Body Whole. There are some highlights of these lessons that are applicable to all of us!

The first week is a focus on mood and stress with a good discussion about how emotions aren’t good or bad, they just are. How we act/react to our emotions is often what gets us into trouble! Students learn and practice “box breathing” as a tool to slow down when things get hectic. Box breathing is a simple technique of taking a deep breath to the count of 4, holding that breath for a count of 4, slowing exhaling to a count of 4, and again holding to a count of 4. This is a technique that all of us can use.

Getting good sleep is the focus of Lesson 2. It includes the need of sleep for physical and mental health. Students are encouraged to develop a healthy bedtime routine which often includes keeping their phone out of their room or turning off notifications to minimize interruptions. An important activity as part of this lesson is to practice a “body scan” which involves laying quietly with eyes closed while focusing on and creating tension in your body as you take a deep breath; as you exhale, you intentionally release the tension. We start with toes, move to feet/ankles, and on through the body. By focusing your mind on the deep breathing and tension/release, the level of calm and stillness is so evident in the room!

This past week, we added the impacts of diet on our mood, stress level, and sleep. In addition to a general discussion of food and nutrition, we had good discussion about limiting the amount of sugars and caffeine in our diet, especially later in the day. I was really impressed by the wide variety of vegetables that the students eat and challenged them to try one new food this week. A good takeaway for all of us is slowing down when we eat while trying to eat from all the food groups. A funny discussion involved that there are some foods that we just don’t care for but we should try them from time to time or try them cooked a different way. I do have several volunteers to eat any pickles that I end up with!

This week, we will wrap up by adding the impacts of exercise to our mood/emotions and stress level. Different exercises work for different people. I am not a runner but I do appreciate a good stress walk. Students will work together to develop a workout plan to make sure that they are&nbsp;getting their 60 minutes of exercise at least three days per week. Changing up the types of exercise is also important. While many of the students I have been working with are involved in a sport, we discuss that playing with or walking your dog counts as does a good set of stretches, jumping jacks, or push-ups. No equipment needed! I’ll be doing some toe touches and lacing up my shoes for a walk.

Hypertension awareness and prevention program meeting set for Feb. 3

Kansas State University veterinarian Gregg Hanzlicek said being prepared ahead of calving season is the best way for producers to assure they will bring home the newborn calves successfully.

“We're moving into the third trimester which means the metabolic demands of that cow or heifer are going to increase tremendously,” Hanzlicek said.

A key to having a successful calving and production season is for cows and heifers to be in the appropriate body condition, which according to Hanzlicek is a score of 5-7. “We’re far enough away from calving that we can add condition to these cows and heifers without (creating) an economic burden,” he said. “It really comes down to having a formulated ration that is balanced for protein and energy.”

For those wanting to add scour vaccines to their prevention program, “it’s time to decide what vaccine they are going to use,” Hanzlicek said. “Look at the label and schedule on the calendar when they need to start vaccinating the cows and heifers.” 

Hanzlicek said heifers will require two doses of the scours vaccine, while cows need one. The timing of those vaccines is “very, very important,” he said.

Also, Hanzlicek recommends establishing a clean calving area to help reduce the risk of scours. “There’s two major risk factors for scours,” he said. “One is the lack of colostrum consumption. The other is a contaminated environment that the babies are born into.”

Hanzlicek recommends having a location to move the pairs off the calving area to keep the calving facility less contaminated with the scour organisms.

Getting the calf here safely is another factor to consider, "Most operations are going to have to help at least one animal during the calving season,” Hanzlicek said. The last national survey indicated that 1 of every 100 heifers and 2 of every 100 adult cows will need assistance.

Being prepared to pull a calf is important. Hanzlicek said producers should have the following items on hand:

· Clean straps or chains. · OB sleeves. · Lube. · Working calf pullers. · Veterinarian's phone number.

Intervening at an appropriate time is important. “If we intervene too early and the cow or heifer is not dilated, we can injure the tissues and hurt the calf,” Hanzlicek said. “If we intervene too late, a lot of times that’s when we end up with stillborn calves.” 

According to Hanzlicek, once a cow has reached the second stage of labor, they should give birth within 30 minutes. A heifer should calve within an hour. Second stage labor is when the heifer or cow can be observed experiencing uterine contractions, or the water-bag or calf’s feet are visible.

 </figure>By ALICIA BOOR Cottonwood Extension DistrictKansas State University veterinarian Gregg Hanzlicek said being prepared ahead of calving season is the best way for producers to assure they will bring home the newborn calves successfully.“We're moving into the third trimester which means the metabolic demands of that cow or heifer are going to increase tremendously,” Hanzlicek said.A key to having a successful calving and production season is for cows and heifers to be in the appropriate body condition, which according to Hanzlicek is a score of 5-7. “We’re far enough away from calving that we can add condition to these cows and heifers without (creating) an economic burden,” he said. “It really comes down to having a formulated ration that is balanced for protein and energy.”For those wanting to add scour vaccines to their prevention program, “it’s time to decide what vaccine they are going to use,” Hanzlicek said. “Look at the label and schedule on the calendar when they need to start vaccinating the cows and heifers.” Hanzlicek said heifers will require two doses of the scours vaccine, while cows need one. The timing of those vaccines is “very, very important,” he said.Also, Hanzlicek recommends establishing a clean calving area to help reduce the risk of scours. “There’s two major risk factors for scours,” he said. “One is the lack of colostrum consumption. The other is a contaminated environment that the babies are born into.”Hanzlicek recommends having a location to move the pairs off the calving area to keep the calving facility less contaminated with the scour organisms.Getting the calf here safely is another factor to consider, "Most operations are going to have to help at least one animal during the calving season,” Hanzlicek said. The last national survey indicated that 1 of every 100 heifers and 2 of every 100 adult cows will need assistance.Being prepared to pull a calf is important. Hanzlicek said producers should have the following items on hand:· Clean straps or chains. · OB sleeves. · Lube. · Working calf pullers. · Veterinarian's phone number.Intervening at an appropriate time is important. “If we intervene too early and the cow or heifer is not dilated, we can injure the tissues and hurt the calf,” Hanzlicek said. “If we intervene too late, a lot of times that’s when we end up with stillborn calves.” According to Hanzlicek, once a cow has reached the second stage of labor, they should give birth within 30 minutes. A heifer should calve within an hour. CAMPBELL: K-State NW KS forage schools 

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/">U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans</a>&nbsp;build on familiar advice — eat more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grains and limit highly processed foods — while sharpening the focus on how Americans cook, combine and choose foods for long-term health, according to a Kansas State University Extension nutrition specialist.

Priscilla Brenes, a nutrition and wellness specialist with K-State Extension, said the updated guidelines emphasize gut health, higher-quality protein and cooking skills that support healthier eating at home.

“We are seeing many similar things as before,” Brenes said. “But they’re also pointing out more gut health. They are increasing the amount of protein. The USDA is calling for high-quality, nutrient-dense proteins, and they’re prompting people on different cooking methods.”

Those methods — baking, broiling, roasting, stir-frying and grilling — reflect an emphasis for more home cooking, Brenes said, encouraging Americans to rely less on ready-to-eat and restaurant foods and more on meals prepared at home.

“If we start decreasing the amount of ready-to-eat foods we eat, or start eating out less, then we need to increase our skills on those cooking methods,” she said. “We need to pay more attention to what foods we are putting on our plates.”

Protein plays a central role in the new recommendations. The guidelines call for prioritizing high-quality, nutrient-dense protein foods at every meal, drawn from both animal and plant sources.

“In animal sources, we have eggs, poultry and seafood,” Brenes said. “In plant sources, we have peas, beans and lentils, and a combination of those throughout the day.”

When it comes to meat, the emphasis is on minimizing added sugars and refined carbohydrates while enhancing flavor with herbs and spices rather than heavy sauces.

The guidelines also highlight whole dairy foods without added sugars. “Dairy has a lot of good nutrients that we need,” she said, including vitamins D and A, which are fat-soluble, as well as B vitamins essential for brain and body function.

Even with full-fat dairy and higher protein intake, moderation remains key. The guidelines continue to recommend that no more than 10% of daily calories come from saturated fat, based on a standard 2,000-calorie diet.

A simple way to understand saturated fats, Brenes said, is to look at how foods behave at room temperature.

“If it’s solid at room temperature, like butter, it has a high content of saturated fat,” she said. “If it’s liquid at room temperature, like olive oil, it has more unsaturated fats.”

These new guidelines make reading nutrition labels an essential skill, especially for people managing conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes. Brenes said K-State Extension agents and staff can help Kansans learn how to interpret labels and choose foods that fit their health needs.

Fruits and vegetables remain a cornerstone of the guidelines, with an emphasis on variety and color to maximize vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support gut health. While fresh produce is preferred, frozen, dried or canned options can also work if they contain no added sugars and limited sodium.

Whole grains are another priority, providing fiber and essential nutrients. Brenes said consumers should look for grains that retain the bran, germ and endosperm, such as oats, quinoa, brown rice and whole wheat, and carefully read labels to ensure products truly contain whole grains.

The guidelines also call for reducing highly processed foods, which often provide excess calories from fat and added sugars without enough essential nutrients.

Alcohol intake should be limited, and sodium consumption should stay below 2,300 milligrams per day, with lower limits for some individuals.

Ultimately, Brenes said the dietary guidelines serve as a foundation.

“They are a base, and then we need to build from there,” she said, pointing to K-State Extension programs that teach cooking skills, meal planning and label reading. “We can help build healthier meals depending on people’s needs and their budgets.”

KOERNER: New dietary guidelines put spotlight on gut health, protein, home cooking

Beyond developing skills in the barn or on the Shooting Sports range, other 4-H projects provide opportunities to learn responsibility, leadership, and life lessons.

Audrey Yarmer finds joy in raising and showing poultry through the 4-H program. “My favorite part of the poultry project is spending time caring for my chickens and watching them free-range in the yard,” Yarmer said. Showing poultry has helped her birds become calmer and more trusting, strengthening the bond between exhibitor and animal. Yarmer carefully prepares her birds for shows by washing their feet, shanks, and vent areas with water and a toothbrush, along with spot-cleaning feathers as needed. “I also put a little Vaseline on their feet, shanks, and combs to make them shine,” she explained. One fun fact she has learned through the project is simple but memorable: “Chickens love cheese.” Beyond animal care, the poultry project has helped Yarmer grow as a leader. Managing expenses taught her financial responsibility, especially during her time serving as her club’s treasurer.

Cannon Vajnar’s 4-H experience centers around the Entomology project, focusing on honeybees, a project that blends agriculture, science, and community outreach. What began with just two hives has grown to more than ten hives across multiple locations. “The bee project has taught me a lot about hive management, bee health, and honey production,” Vajnar said. He has shared his knowledge by presenting demonstration talks at 4-H Days, creating posters, and educating elementary students about the importance of pollinators. At the end of the year, he records his accomplishments and challenges in his entomology record book. In addition, Vajnar and his father sell and deliver honey to customers throughout the Hays area, teaching him entrepreneurship and customer service.

Kaylee Schumacher has grown significantly through her involvement in the 4-H Foods and Nutrition project, learning that preparation and organization are just as important as the recipe itself. When she first began, she would gather ingredients as she went, but with experience she learned to measure and set everything out before baking to stay efficient and avoid mistakes. “Getting everything ready before I start makes baking less stressful and helps me stay organized,” Schumacher said. One of her most memorable moments came in 2023 when her angel food cake earned Grand Champion Foods at the fair. Recreating the cake for the sale proved challenging due to extreme summer heat, causing the delicate cake to stick and lose its top crust when flipped, an experience she now laughs about and remembers fondly as a bonding moment with her mom. Beyond baking skills, Schumacher says the project helped her become more organized in everyday life, even inspiring her to use a planner for schoolwork and deadlines. She believes this habit will benefit her well beyond 4-H, including in college and future careers.

Each of these project areas highlights how 4-H helps members develop valuable life skills such as patience, responsibility, leadership, and communication in different ways. Whether working in the kitchen to perfect a loaf of bread or in the barn completing a daily hair-care routine for a heifer, 4-H projects encourage youth to learn by doing while making lasting memories and meaningful impacts in their communities. When she first began, she would gather ingredients as she went, but with experience she learned to measure and set everything out before baking to stay efficient and avoid mistakes. “Getting everything ready before I start makes baking less stressful and helps me stay organized,” Schumacher said. One of her most memorable moments came in 2023 when her angel food cake earned Grand Champion Foods at the fair. Recreating the cake for the sale proved challenging due to extreme summer heat, causing the delicate cake to stick and lose its top crust when flipped, an experience she now laughs about and remembers fondly as a bonding moment with her mom. Beyond baking skills, Schumacher says the project helped her become more organized in everyday life, even inspiring her to use a planner for schoolwork and deadlines. She believes this habit will benefit her well beyond 4-H, including in college and future careers.Each of these project areas highlights how 4-H helps members develop valuable life skills such as patience, responsibility, leadership, and communication in different ways. By ALICIA BOOR Cottonwood Extension District It is hard to prepare for extreme winter weather when December was so warm. However, variability is a characteristic of Kansas weather and a drop in temperature with above normal precipitation can create some very stressful conditions for livestock. Animals adapt to colder weather as we go through the fall into winter, but if there is an abrupt change, without acclimation, the stress is compounded.

Many of us are all too aware of the impact wind has on what it takes to keep warm in the winter. Wind speed along with temperature, humidity, and solar radiation have been combined into an animal comfort index that can be used to classify the level of weather-related stress for cattle. 

The K-State Mesonet now provides both current conditions and a 7-day forecast of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://mesonet.k-state.edu/agriculture/animal/">Animal Comfort Index</a>&nbsp;that producers can use for planning.

During extreme cold, cattle need more energy just to maintain body heat. Windbreaks are a key tool in helping livestock cope with cold stress and reduce the amount of energy, and in effect cost, to maintain weight. 

Some of the best windbreaks are multiple rows of established trees, but they take years to develop and serve a fixed location. 

If building a portable windbreak or a windbreak fence, the most effective for wind protection is 75 to 80% solid to reduce wind speed but prevent snow drifting. An opening of 4 to 6” at the base will promote drying and drainage.Bedding is another tool to help livestock manage cold stress. 

Bedding provides insulation from mud and frozen ground and helps keep cattle clean. Shelter and bedded areas only calves can access will help young calves better cope with the winter weather.

 Bulls can be overlooked during the winter months; however frostbite of the scrotum can cause anywhere from short-term to permanent damage to sperm production. Windbreaks and bedding are great tools to protect your investment in bulls and their genetics.

Drought has impacted forage availability in parts of the state and may make it harder to find sources of bedding. If needed, unrolling large round bales of good quality feed can do double duty as feed and bedding for a short-term solution. 

Feedlot calves that received bedding (4 lbs. per head per day) during a particularly cold January gained 3.33 lbs. per day compared to 2.25 lbs/day for un-bedded calves. For young or already stressed calves, bedding may minimize negative health impacts from the combined stressors.

When cold stress occurs, feeding cattle late in the day can help cattle cope with night-time temperature declines as the heat of fermentation in the rumen will peak about 6 hours after consumption.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Cold weather and livestock protection

Radon is a radioactive, colorless, and odorless gas that occurs naturally in soil. Outdoors, radon levels are low because they are diluted. However, in our homes, radon levels can build up and increase our risk of developing lung cancer. Radon enters our homes from the soil through cracks in concrete floors and walls, floor drains, sump pits, etc. If the concentration of radon is increased, your family may be at risk.

The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, and it is the #1 cause of lung cancer in Kansas for nonsmokers. When you breathe in radon, it gets trapped in your lung tissue and gives off radiation that damages cells. Over time, this compound effect can cause lung cancer.

Homes with high radon levels have been found in every state, and radon levels can vary greatly in each home. In fact, your neighbor’s level can be very different from your own home’s level. 

According to the KDHE Kansas radon map, the average radon level is at least 5.1 pCi/ L which leads to 1 in 4 Kansas homes having high radon levels. Barton and Ellis Counties are both in the red with averages of 4.0 pCi/L or more.

The good news is that testing your home for radon is simple and affordable. Short-term radon kits are available in both the Hays and Great Bend extension offices for $9.50 or you can order online at: <a href="https://www.kansasradonprogram.org/RadonKS">https://www.kansasradonprogram.org/RadonKS</a>

FRASIER: January is Kansas Radon Action Month

Yards may need another shot of moisture even after recent rain and snow to alleviate stress in lawns and gardens, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“A good, deep watering with moisture reaching at least a foot down into the soil is much better than several light sprinklings that just wet the top portions of the soil,” Domenghini said. “A deep watering will ensure that the majority of roots have access to water.”

Domenghini urged homeowners to test the moisture content in their yard’s soil by pushing a metal rod or wooden dowel into the ground. “Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet,” she said. Measure how far down the implement goes to determine the amount of moisture is in the soil.

“Although all perennial plants benefit from moist soils before winter, it is especially important for newly planted or over-seeded lawns, as well as newly transplanted trees and shrubs due to their limited root systems,” Domenghini said.

“Even trees and shrubs planted within the last 2-3 years are more sensitive to drought than a well-established plant. Evergreens are more at risk because moisture is lost from the foliage.”

Domenghini shared a few tips for watering common areas of the yard:

Trees and shrubs planted within the last year. Drill a small hole in a five-gallon bucket near the bottom, then fill the bucket and let the water dribble out slowly next to the tree. Refill the bucket once so that you apply 10 gallons. Slow release bags with micropores can be purchased as an alternative to using a bucket. Larger trees planted 2-3 years prior may require more water.

Large trees. Using a soaker hose, circle the trunk one-half the distance to the dripline, or the outermost reach of branches. On smaller trees, you may need to circle the tree several times so that tree roots will be watered.

Newly established bed or foundation plantings. Hook the beginning and end of a soaker hose to a Y-adapter to equalize pressure, which encourages more uniform watering.

Fall planted or overseeded lawns. Use an overhead sprinkler. Watering to a depth of 12 inches is more difficult; try to reach at least six inches deep.

BOOR: Watering winter land

•Having hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.

•Nearly half of adults in the United States (47%, or 116 million) have hypertension.

•Only about 1 in 4 adults (24%) with hypertension have their condition under control.

*Many people have high blood pressure and don’t know it.

To address hypertension in Kansas, K-State Extension is bringing the Hypertension Awareness and Prevention program (HAPp) to Ellis and Barton counties. 

HAPp is a four-month self-monitoring blood pressure (SMBP) program that will provide participants with:

· A free validated blood pressure monitor.

· An opportunity to meet with a trained HAPp Coach twice a month to help take and track blood pressure.

· Monthly nutrition education workshops.

· Stress management and healthy lifestyle strategies.

There are no requirements to participate. There is strong evidence that suggests that participants who engage in SMBP along with clinical or community support can lower their high blood pressure.

This year we have Dr. Travis Haneke, cardiologist, joining us for the kick-off meeting. He will be a great resource for people wanting to learn more about blood pressure, how it works, and how they can maintain healthy blood pressure.

•Participants are expected to attend the kick-off meeting on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in either Great Bend (Barton Co. Health Department, 1300 Kansas Ave.) or Hays (Cottonwood Extension Office, 601 Main St., back meeting room).

•Participants are expected to measure their blood pressure at home at least twice per month (February – May).

•Participants are expected to attend office hours to discuss SMBP readings and healthy lifestyle strategies twice per month (February – May). Office hours will be scheduled after the Kick- Off meeting.

Getting the most out of your fertilizer dollar in these tough economic times with commodity prices as low as they are will be the focus of K-State Extension agents in the region hosting several programs to address this issue, says Stacy Campbell, crop production agent with the Cottonwood Extension District.

A soil fertility with tight crop budgets program will be held at the Barton County 4-H Building, U.S. N. Highway 281 at the intersection of NW 60th Road, Great Bend, on Thursday, January 29, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m.&nbsp;

This program has been designed to help producers understand how to get the most out of their fertilizer dollar, while making zero to minimal impact on yields.

January 28 – Colby – 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Thomas Co. 4-H Building

January 29 – Kensington – 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – First St. John Lutheran Church

January 29 – Great Bend – 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Barton Co. 4-H Building

The schools will be presented by Dr. Lucas Haag, agronomist-in-charge at Tribune and Dr. Peter Tomlinson, KSU fertility specialist along with local district extension agents. 

Topics will include KSU research updates, soil sampling, fertilizing with tight budgets, premixes and standard forms, targeted nutrients and a question and answer session. So be sure and bring all your questions with you! 2.5 CCA credits have been applied for.

Topics will include KSU research updates, soil sampling, fertilizing with tight budgets, premixes and standard forms, targeted nutrients and a question and answer session.
