Sometimes it’s difficult to follow with an encore for an event that was a smashing success in its debut.

But that’s exactly what the Diocese of Salina is planning for this year’s Eucharistic Conference.

It will offer a special opportunity to grow in faith and community while learning that “You matter,” the message delivered by keynote speaker Father John Riccardo from Detroit, Michigan.

The Second-Annual Eucharistic Conference is set for Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10, at Fort Hays State University in Hays.

Registration for the weekend, which includes lunch on Sunday, is currently at an early-bird price of $40 per person through Tuesday, July 1. The price will increase slightly after the early-bird special deadline.

Anyone unable to access the registration forms through this method should contact their parish, which will assist with the registration process.

This year’s conference will highlight the theme of the Jubilee Year of Hope for 2025: “Hope Does Not Disappoint,” and feature numerous engaging speakers known for their powerful insights and teachings, deepening your understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.

One of those highlights will be Fr. Riccardo.

“The God who created the universe thought the world would be incomplete without you,” is Fr. Riccardo’s message. “You are the result of a thought of God. He willed you, He loves you, and He has a purpose for your life.”

After serving 23 years as a parish priest, Fr. Riccardo founded Acts XXIX to proclaim the gospel in an attractive and compelling way and to equip clergy and lay leaders for the age in which God has chosen us to live.

“You are not here by chance. The God who created the stars also created you, intentionally, lovingly, and for a purpose. Your dignity isn’t something you earn. It’s something you’ve been given,” Fr. Riccardo says. “You were made in the image of God, and that means your life matters – eternally. When we let that truth in – that we’re loved by a God who would rather die than lose us – it changes everything. It heals wounds. It gives meaning. And it calls us to live differently, with courage and hope, because we know who we are and whose we are.”

Rev. Gerald Vincke, bishop of the Diocese of Salina, is excited to have been able to secure such a renowned speaker for the conference.

"It is my desire that everyone attends this conference and listens to Fr. John Riccardo's beautiful message of God's love for each of us,” Bishop Vincke said. “We all need to hear this message, sometimes more than we realize. In the midst of our daily struggles, distractions and doubts, it's easy to forget just how deeply we are loved by God."

Another couple of favorite portions of the inaugural conference last year were Adoration Under the Stars in the FHSU Quad, this year set for 9 p.m. Saturday, and the 4 p.m. Mass on Sunday. Both of those are free and open to the public.

There will be several additions and a few changes to this year’s schedule.

Sunday’s finale, the Mass offered by Bishop Vincke, will be in the newly air-conditioned Gross Memorial Coliseum instead of outdoors.

The main portion of the conference is on Saturday and Sunday. However, the committee has added some extras this year.

The pre-conference schedule, free and open to the public, will begin with a Runnin’ Revs game Friday evening on the main floor in Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Runnin’ Revs is a group of diocesan priests and seminarians who play local and area high school athletes a couple of times a year at various locations around the diocese.

Other pre-conference events include tours of the recently renovated Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays and the Basilica of St. Fidelis, also known as the Cathedral of the Plains, in Victoria.

Included on this year’s list of speakers will be Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, and hometown favorite Grant Ginther, a graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian who just finished serving as a FOCUS missionary at the University of Oregon.

Some breakout sessions are geared more toward men, women or youth; others are for a general audience of all ages. A complete list of speakers can be found at https://salinadiocese.org/office/eucharistic-conference-2025/

Catholic Eucharistic Conference: You Matter!

Fort Hays State University is set to break ground on expanding Stroup Hall to meet the increasing demand for nurses and health professionals.

Fort Hays State University is almost doubling the size of Stroup Hall, the nursing department’s home since 1981, thanks to a $15 million allocation from the Kansas Legislature.

Jeff Briggs, dean of Fort Hays State’s College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, said annual Bachelor of Science in Nursing program admissions have increased from 60 to 80 students in the past 15 years.

"Our ability to serve more students and to create a state-of-the-art learning environment for our students has been paramount to us," Briggs said.

Construction will begin with a kickoff event on Aug. 21 and is expected to be completed in early 2027. The project will add about 30,000 square feet to the building.

FHSU Alumni Director Kim Cebula said the university aims to admit about 100 nursing students annually after the expansion.

The addition will not only support the nursing program, but also bring the Allied Health department into the same building. Renovations include upgraded simulation labs and exam rooms to improve hybrid training for students in rural Kansas.

Jenny Manry, chairwoman of the Department of Nursing at FHSU, said, "This last year, we had over 65% of our students return to western Kansas."

Stroup Hall will remain open, with most interior renovations scheduled for the summer to reduce disruptions. Updates will be posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NursingFHSU">Fort Hays State Department of Nursing Facebook page</a>.

Area students named to Barton Community College President, Dean Lists 

LINCOLN, Neb. — Kiersten Ashley Goertzen of Hays has been named to the Deans' List at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the spring semester of the 2024-25 academic year.

Goertzen, a senior majoring in music education, was named to the Dean's List for the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

More than 6,700 students at Nebraska were named to the Deans' List for the spring semester.

Hays student named to spring Deans' List at Nebraska

HAYS – The Hays Larks raced out to an early lead then pulled away late for a 14-4 win over the Collegiate (Colo.) Roughriders in a battle of the first and second place teams in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League Saturday evening at Larks Park. The first place Larks improved to 13-3-1 overall and 10-3 RMBL while the Roughriders fell to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The Larks used four hits, two walks and a hit batter to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Thomas Lyssy had an RBI single, Jackson Babcock a two-run double and CJ Reid an RBI single.

The Roughriders answered with four in the top of the second but the Larks would take back the lead for good when Lyssy drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth. 

The Larks would add three more runs in the sixth on a Trent Baker two-run homer and Brady Kreutzer RBI single which pushed the lead to 8-4.

They blew the game open with a five-run seventh. Kaleb Duncan started the scoring with an RBI single. Baker added an RBI double, Duncan scored on a wild pitch, Babcock and Kreutzer also had runs scoring singles.

Duncan closed out the scoring with an RBI single to left to end the game by run-rule in the eighth.

Baker and Taber Stokes both had three of the Larks 14 hits. Baker drove in three runs with Duncan, Lyssy, Babcock and Kreutzer all driving in two runs.

Hays Post SportsHAYS – The Hays Larks raced out to an early lead then pulled away late for a 14-4 win over the Collegiate (Colo.) Roughriders in a battle of the first and second place teams in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League Saturday evening at Larks Park. The first place Larks improved to 13-3-1 overall and 10-3 RMBL while the Roughriders fell to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in league play.The Larks used four hits, two walks and a hit batter to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Thomas Lyssy had an RBI single, Jackson Babcock a two-run double and CJ Reid an RBI single.The Roughriders answered with four in the top of the second but the Larks would take back the lead for good when Lyssy drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth. The Larks would add three more runs in the sixth on a Trent Baker two-run homer and Brady Kreutzer RBI single which pushed the lead to 8-4.They blew the game open with a five-run seventh. Kaleb Duncan started the scoring with an RBI single. Hays, Kansas, died Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the Westview Health Care Center
in Derby, Kansas.

Mary Ann &nbsp;was born on
January 31, 1942 in Hays, Kansas, of Jacob and Angela (Leiker) Burgardt and
spent her childhood in Pfeifer, Kansas.&nbsp; She graduated from high school in
Hays. She lived in Prescott, Arizona for many years before returning to Hays,
Kansas where she lived until recently moving to Derby, Kansas. 

Throughout the years Mary Ann
worked in Customer Service and was a devoted senior companion. She enjoyed
doing photography, working word puzzles and going to church services. She loved
spending time with her family and friends and she loved the Lord. 

Survivors include her children
Leslie (Georgia) Pfannenstiel of Wichita, Loel Pfannenstiel of Wichita, Clarice
Hanes of Chino Valley, Arizona and son-in-law Wayne Hays of Ponca City,
Oklahoma; grandchildren Kalebb Rakyta, Dallas Pfannenstiel, Elizabeth Diamanti,
Andrew Elliott; great grandchildren Noen Dimante and Makayla Moore; also many
nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by
her parents, Jacob and Angela Burgardt; daughter Amy Hays; and brothers and
their wives Nick (Alberta) Arnold, Norman (Freida) Burgardt, Earl Burgardt,
James (Theona) Burgardt, and Edward Burgardt. 

A Celebration of Life will be

The Ellis County Workforce Committee discussed strategies to encourage students to join and remain in the local workforce after graduation.

The committee, led by Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of the Chamber in Hays, recognized barriers from weak connections between schools and employers to incomplete job postings.

Several representatives from local institutions, such as Fort Hays State University, the city of Hays, and Hess Services, attended the meeting.

Several members said teachers are often unaware of job opportunities in the area. Shelly Schlitter of RANS Designs suggested retraining teachers on what the county offers.

"If we agree that it starts with kids, then it really starts with teachers," Schlitter said. "They have their job to do. They're responsible for many young lives, so how can we educate them on what their own community offers?"

The committee emphasized the importance of engaging with students at all grade levels, not just in high school or college. They discussed initiatives such as mock interviews, advisory boards and financial literacy sessions to help students understand how to evaluate compensation packages.

Wasinger also highlighted the value of internships, especially those previously funded by the Hansen Foundation.

"I would love to help rebuild that bridge because I think that was an affordable way for people to seek good talent," she said.

Liesel Sims-Staab, director of human resources at Midland Marketing, said young workers seek clear job descriptions, salary ranges and greater transparency in job postings.

"As someone younger in the workforce, if you don't post a salary range, I'm not interested," Sims-Staab said.

Wasinger said she is working with Shawn Henderson, Hays High School principal, to plan a potential job fair at the school that would also be open to students from nearby districts.

The committee noted despite growing up in a digital age, younger generations tend to prefer face-to-face interaction over online communication when exploring career opportunities.

"Believe it or not, there have been some really good studies in Generation Z about their preferred method of communication. ... It's face-to-face. That's because so much of what they do is digital. What they crave is the personal contact," said Ben Schears, FHSU vice president for economic and workforce development.

Chamber in Hays website to serve as workforce resource hub

The Chamber in Hays has added a <a href="https://members.hayschamber.com/jobs">job board section to its website</a>.

Wasinger said most of the information will be publicly accessible, with the only restriction being the ability to post job listings.

"You can view the job postings on our website, but to actually add one as an employer, you have to be a chamber member," she said.

The hub will feature local and state job boards, as well as workforce retention resources from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Vice Mayor Mason Ruder said the city of Hays is conducting a new housing study, which will be shared with the public upon completion. The most recent housing study was conducted in 2019.

The committee discussed collecting data to link housing development with workforce growth.&nbsp;

Mark Hess, vice president of operations at Hess Services, said if a survey is conducted, it should focus on workers in their family-building and home-buying years, and collect data on affordable price points.

The committee acknowledged housing challenges in the area. Members will discuss pro-business policy advocacy at different levels of government in the future.

The next workforce committee meeting is scheduled for July 29.

Hays city commissioners approved more steps Thursday in the process for two new planned housing developments.

A public hearing was conducted regarding the rehabilitation of the second floor of the building at 1012 Main St. Hays developer Tim Speno, One Twenty Seven Investments LLC, wants to construct three Airbnb apartments.&nbsp;

Commissioners approved a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant application to the Kansas Department of Commerce on Speno's behalf. There is no financial obligation to the city.

Also approved were resolutions certifying legal authority and declaring a building blighted.

A district rezoning request was approved for 2707 Canal Blvd. from commercial general to residential multi-family. Aaron Dreher of AD3 LLC, Hays, plans to build housing  designed for short- or long-term rentals that are fully&nbsp;furnished for traveling nurses or similar business professionals.

Three revisions to the Unified Development Code were approved, which govern accessory structures,&nbsp;such as gazebos or garden sheds.

Proposed are the elimination of&nbsp; • Side and rear setbacks for accessory structures 120 square feet and smaller • Maximum number of two accessory structures that can be placed on a single parcel&nbsp; • Restrictions on the size of accessory structures in agriculture districts, which are on the edge of town.

Commissioners Reese Barrick and Alaina Cunningham were absent from the meeting.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State University has named 1,841 students to the Deans’ Honor Roll for the Spring 2025 semester.

The Deans’ Honor Roll includes undergraduate students only. To be eligible, students must have completed 12 or more credit hours and earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.60 for the semester. Full-time on-campus and FHSU Virtual College students are eligible.

The following list does not include students who requested privacy. If a Hays address was given by the student as their primary home address, and no other hometown was designated, the student will be listed as a Hays student.

FHSU announces Hays students named to Spring 2025 Deans’ Honor Roll

With the 2025 wheat harvest in full swing it is time to think about weed control in wheat stubble. When soil moisture conditions are favorable, weeds that have been suppressed by the canopy will grow rapidly once crop competition is removed. In addition, weeds that have emerged through the wheat canopy will be damaged during harvest and will quickly begin regrowth. 

Delaying control can result in lost soil moisture that could be used for crop production, as well as weed seed production, which will cause difficulties in the future.

When thinking about weed control in wheat stubble, there are two priorities – controlling already emerged weeds and preventing later flushes. Making applications before weeds exceed 4 to 6 inches is necessary for good control of already emerged weeds. Residual herbicides are necessary to reduce the number of herbicide applications required to control multiple flushes of weeds.

Despite a growing number of herbicide-resistant weeds, glyphosate plus 2,4-D LVE and/or dicamba continue to be important for weed control in wheat stubble. However, these herbicides alone are not likely to provide adequate control of pigweeds or kochia, especially when applied in the hot, dry conditions that are common after wheat harvest. 

Some herbicide options commonly used to control weeds after wheat harvest are listed below.

Paraquat (Gramoxone, others) is a Group 22 herbicide that can work well in place of glyphosate for nonselective control of emerged pigweed and kochia. 

If planning to plant corn or sorghum next spring, a tank mix of paraquat with atrazine (Group 5) will enhance the control of emerged weeds and provide some residual weed control. Atrazine labels have recently changed such that the only noncrop uses of atrazine permitted are for wheat stubble in wheat-fallow-wheat, wheat-corn-fallow, and wheat-sorghum-fallow rotations.

Metribuzin is another Group 5 herbicide that can be used instead of atrazine to enhance control and provide some residual activity.

One final note regarding paraquat. Limited research out of Australia suggests applying paraquat 2 weeks after a glyphosate application will increase weed control. This is called a ‘double knock’ strategy. This information is included here not as a recommendation per se, but to encourage careful thought about when you want to utilize contact herbicides in your fallow weed management system. 

If paraquat were sprayed with or before glyphosate, the rapid damage to leaf tissue with prevent uptake and translocation of glyphosate. However, if a glyphosate application partially controls weeds, there will be sufficient leaf area 2 weeks after application for paraquat to be effective.

Saflufenacil (Sharpen), a Group 14 herbicide applied at one to two fluid ounces per acre, is an option to provide postemergence and short-term residual control of Palmer amaranth, kochia, and other broadleaf weeds.

Tiafenacil (Reviton) is a Group 14 very similar to Sharpen in terms of weed control and adjuvant use.

Flumioxazin (Valor, others) is a Group 14 herbicide that can be added to burndown treatments at rates of one to four fluid ounces per acre for activity on emerged broadleaf weeds and some residual activity on broadleaf and grass weeds in wheat stubble. Flumioxazin can be mixed with glyphosate or clethodim (Select Max) for enhanced grass control. It can also be mixed with 2,4-D, atrazine, metribuzin, or paraquat.

Another group 14 herbicide that can be considered is sulfentrazone (Spartan, others). Sulfentrazone can be applied to stubble and will control Palmer amaranth and kochia as well as other broadleaf weeds and some grasses. Of the Group 14 herbicides discussed, flumioxazin and sulfentrazone provide the greatest residual activity; however, saflufenacil provides greater postemergence kochia control than flumioxazin.

 Research to evaluate Palmer amaranth control in wheat stubble was conducted in Hays during 2019 and 2020. Herbicides were applied approximately 3 weeks after harvest to Palmer amaranth that was 2 to 3 feet tall. Palmer amaranth control 4 weeks after application in general, treatments that included paraquat (Gramoxone) resulted in the greatest Palmer amaranth control.

After nearly six decades of service to local youth, the Hays Optimist Club is disbanding — but their commitment to the community will live on through a newly established fund at the Heartland Community Foundation.

The Hays Optimist Friends of Youth Fund, a field-of-interest endowed fund, will carry forward the club’s mission to support the well-being, growth, and development of all youth in Ellis County.

“As hard as it is to close this chapter, we are incredibly proud of what this club has accomplished,” said Nathan Legleiter, club treasurer. “This fund is our way of saying thank you to the community that supported us all these years — and making sure our impact continues, long after the tree lot closes for the last time.”

The fund will make annual designated grants to three longtime Optimist-supported organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County, the Hays Arts Council, and Ellis County 4-H. 

Remaining funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process each year for projects that benefit youth or are led by kids and teens. The grant committee will be led by the Ellis County Youth Action Council, with guidance from Heartland staff.

 Local organizations will be able to apply for a grant from the fund in 2026. The amount available to grant will grow over time as the balance of the fund grows with continued donations and investment.

Throughout its long history, the Hays Optimist Club raised thousands of dollars through its annual Christmas tree lot and other fundraisers, supporting hundreds of youth-focused initiatives — from sponsoring the Ellis County Creative Writing Awards each year to helping fund the Optimist playground at Seven Hills Park, and contributing $10,000 to the ARC Park addition.

“This fund is a beautiful example of turning the end of one era into the beginning of something lasting,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director of Heartland Community Foundation. “It captures&nbsp;the essence of the Optimist mission — believing in youth, investing in them, and creating opportunities for them to grow.”

The endowed fund will be held and managed by the Heartland Community Foundation, ensuring that gifts made today — or as part of future estate plans — will continue to support Ellis County youth for generations to come.

LIBERAL – After falling behind early, the Hays Larks
outscored the Liberal BeeJays 8-0 from the seventh inning on, including a pair
of runs in the top of the 10th inning in an 11-9 extra-inning
victory Thursday in Liberal.

The Larks (12-3-1, 7-3 RMBL) took the early 3-1 lead through
three and a half innings, scoring on a Garrett Gruell RBI single in the first
inning, a CJ Reid double in the second inning and a passed ball.

Liberal erased the deficit, scoring four runs in the bottom
of the fourth and then extended the lead with three in the fifth and one in the
sixth for a 9-3 lead.

Down six runs through six innings the Larks outscored
Liberal 8-0 over the next four innings.

They got their rally started by scoring two runs in the
seventh on a wild pitch and a Ried RBI single.

Jackson Babcock’s grand slam in the top of the eighth inning
tied the game at nine.

Then, after a scoreless ninth, Dylan LaRue put the Larks up
10-9 with an RBI triple, and Babcock followed with a sacrifice fly to put Hays
up 11-9.

Babcock was two-for-three with five RBIs and scored three
times. LaRue collected three hits and scored three times.

Adrian Najar pitched the final four innings of relief for
the Larks and picked up the win.

He allowed just two hits and one walk, with four strikeouts.

After an off day on Friday, the Larks return to action at
home on Saturday against the Colorado Roughriders.

⚾Larks rally to beat BeeJays in extra innings

The Riley County Police Department Life Saving Award was presented to Officer Brandon Gadia for his exceptional performance and life-saving actions on Jan. 16. 

Officer Gadia responded to a welfare check concerning an individual who had not returned home and was not answering telephone calls. He collected a variety of information and issued a local alert for a welfare contact. When the reporting party later provided additional concerning details, to include missing medication and luggage, Officer Gadia pursued further leads and contacted the individual’s employer and ex-spouse. 

Through his diligent follow-up, Officer Gadia learned the individual had recently voiced intent to end their life. Officer Gadia coordinated with the agency resources that lead to a potential location near Hays. 

Working with RCPD dispatch, he used this information to identify a motel where the individual was confirmed as a guest. Officer Gadia then coordinated with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, who located the individual in medical distress. Thanks to Officer Gadia’s persistence, coordination, and investigative skills, the individual received life-saving medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. 

For his dedication, compassion, and commitment to preserving life, we express our extreme gratitude to Officer Branden Gadia.

Officer recognized: Life-saving actions saved victim in Ellis County

A Hays native is coming home with his own Western feature film, "Was Once a Hero," at the same theatre where he grew up watching classic movies.

The film will screen at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets cost $13.99 and are available <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/o/the-fox-theatre-32076173407">online</a> in advance and at the door on both days.

Paige Smith took on multiple roles in the film, as co-writer, co-producer, costume designer and assistant director, after Dan Searles, whom he met at a film festival, approached him with a short script.

"I wrote the first draft based on his outline and then the two of us sort of molded it to our preference," Smith said.

The story centers on a veteran battling PTSD and dementia who sets out on a final journey and forms an unexpected bond along the way. It was primarily shot in Maryland with a small crew and a budget of less than $200,000.

 </figure>The film stars Darby Hinton as Malcom Hunter and includes performances by Rebecca Holden, Robert Carradine and John Carter Cash. Smith also appears in the film as an actor."We really want to push the idea that family comes from anywhere. You can be yourself and still be loved by others who maybe come from somewhere different. ... We come together through diversity and through the tragedies in our lives," he said.Smith will attend the screening to introduce the film and be available to answer questions.Smith graduated from Hays High School in 1994 and later attended Kansas State University, where he initially studied biology before transitioning to theater, drawing inspiration from his family."As a kid, I watched my dad work on books and bounce ideas off people around him. It's very inspiring to watch somebody go for it," Smith said. "My brother was an actor as well. I watched him go for it and give it a shot."Smith moved to Chicago after college, where he worked in local theater and began gaining television experience. He later moved to Los Angeles to continue building his career in acting and writing.Smith has created several short films, including one that won Best Action/Adventure at Comic-Con in San Diego. He has also acted in and been involved in television series such as "Chicago Fire," "Chicago Med," "Shameless," "Goliath" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."He said most of those roles were “day jobs” and that breaking into the industry was difficult. This led him to create his own projects, which are now set to screen at the same theater he visited as a kid."Being able to go full circle and see a movie that I made in the theatre where I grew up watching movies is incredible and quite possibly once in a lifetime for me.
