Judith
Ann Jolly, 77, of Andover, Kansas, passed away peacefully July 4, 2025, after a
battle with cancer.&nbsp; She was born in&nbsp;Beaumont, Texas, August 9, 1947,
to David and Rosalie (Rietcheck) Jolly.&nbsp; Judy was the oldest of nine
children.

Judy
attended&nbsp;elementary school&nbsp;in Hill City,&nbsp;Kansas.&nbsp; She then
attended the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita for the next seven years. Here
she worked with specialists who helped her learn to adapt and overcome the
obstacles of daily living with cerebral palsy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Judy&nbsp;was
determined to live a full and independent life....and she did!

Her first
employment was&nbsp; at the Graham County
Hospital in the purchasing department.&nbsp; She went on to attend Fort Hays
State University. In 1993 she received her bachelor's degree in&nbsp;social work,&nbsp; in conjunction with Kansas State
University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon&nbsp;graduating, Judy moved to Kansas City and
worked for&nbsp;the State of Kansas and the Department for Children and
Families Vocational Rehabilitation Services for 19 years.

After
retiring&nbsp;in April of 2014, Judy moved to Andover to be closer to her
family.&nbsp; She enjoyed trips to the mall, eating out at a favorite
restaurant, visiting with friends and family, and sitting outside to enjoy the
beautiful days&nbsp;with a frozen Coke.&nbsp; Judy was an avid&nbsp;sports
fan!&nbsp; She especially&nbsp; enjoyed
cheering on the Chiefs and&nbsp;the K-State Wildcats.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Judy is survived by
her sisters: Pat (Phil) Rath of Newton, Mary Jo (Mike) Foster of Weatherford,
Texas, and Amy (Curt) Champlin of Wichita; three brothers: Mike Jolly of
BelAire, Chris (Linda) Jolly of Towanda, and Ron Jolly of Latham; several
nieces, nephews,&nbsp;and numerous friends.&nbsp; Preceding Judy in death were
her parents, David and Rosalie Jolly; and two brothers, Ken Jolly and Gary
Jolly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Judy’s courage,
grit, determination, love for life, and love for her family will continue to
inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. 

A funeral mass will
be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;Church in Hill City,
Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025.&nbsp; Burial will follow at
Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City, Kansas.&nbsp;Memorials to Cerebral
Palsy Research Foundation, in care of Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N Pomeroy

Why is this important to Smoky Hills PBS?

This year Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) funding would make up 54% of Smoky Hills PBS’ revenues. The House of Representatives passed this Recission Bill last month. So if the Senate passes it by July 18th, this funding would be eliminated immediately, and would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to replace. 

CPB funding comprises such a high proportion of Smoky Hills PBS’ revenues because the station serves a very large area, about 51 counties, with a relatively-sparse population with four energy-intensive transmitters. The relatively small population in these counties makes fundraising much more challenging than for urban stations that serve much smaller areas with much higher populations.

What is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (or CPB)?

CPB is the private, nonprofit corporation authorized by Congress to be the steward of funds Congress allocates for public broadcasting. Over 70% of the funding Congress allocates to the CPB goes to local public broadcasters like Smoky Hills PBS. On average, CPB costs the taxpayer $1.60, and its funding comprises 0.01% of the federal budget, so cutting its funding will not meaningfully cut the federal deficit. However, cutting its funding will significantly harm local public TV and radio stations and the people they serve.

LETTER: Tell Senators Moran and Marshall to protect funding for Smoky Hills PBS

AUSTIN, Texas - Fort Hays State men's golfer Cooper Scheck has been named to the 2024-25 CSC Academic All-America At-Large Team as a second team selection, announced Wednesday. The Academic All-America Team is voted on by members of College Sports Communicators nationwide, which reflects both academic and athletic accomplishments of the individuals selected.

A native of Dodge City, Kan., Scheck put together a strong junior season, becoming the first PING All-Region selection in program history after averaging 72.15 across 12 events and 33 rounds of competition. Scheck earned six top 10 finishes, including one victory at the Newman Invitational in October.

He qualified as an individual for the Central/Midwest Regional Championships, becoming the first Tiger to qualify for NCAA postseason competition in a decade. Scheck finished in a tie for 22nd out of 108 golfers at regionals at 4-over for the week (72-75-70). He also earned All-MIAA honors for his performance this season, becoming just the second player in team history to earn multiple All-MIAA recognitions.

Scheck turned in 11 rounds at-or-under par, including the lowest round in recorded team history of 7-under 64 at the Hillcat Classic in March. He posted eight rounds in the 60s on the year, including five rounds of 67 or lower.

He earned his second-consecutive MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award in addition to picking up the MIAA Academic Excellence Award for a second year in a row. He was one of just two men's golfers league-wide to take home both awards.

Scheck continues to maintain a perfect 4.00 GPA through six semesters of higher education coursework. He is a health and human performance major at FHSU with an emphasis in sport and exercise therapy.

He was the only male and one of only two MIAA athletes to earn a spot on one of the Academic All-America At-Large Teams, joined by Mia Rallo (UCM women's golf) who was also listed on the second team.

Scheck is the first men's golfer in school history to earn the prestigious award and is the second golfer overall after Morgan Brasser represented the women's golf team with a second team recognition in 2022-23.

He brings Fort Hays State's all-time CSC Academic All-America count to 76 for all sports, with the first awarded back in 1975. Scheck is the fifth CSC Academic All-America selection during the 2024-25 academic year for Fort Hays State, joining Tadhg Walsh of men's soccer, Myles Menges and Josh Shaw of football and Katie DeGarmo of women's basketball.

Hays City Commission reviews draft 2026 budget; mill levy remains at 25 mills

The Ellis County Commission discussed 2026 funding recommendations with the Ellis County Care Council during its Tuesday meeting.

Brett Gerber, with the Ellis County Care Council, said the group divides funding requests into four categories and bases its recommendations on the specific needs of the outside agencies seeking support.

The total requested is $169,500, while the amount available for allocation is $160,995.&nbsp;If approved in the final budget, the funding would be available for disbursement in January 2026.

The commission discussed the 2026 mill levy and long-term financial planning for the county. Commissioner Michael Berges suggested adding one to two mills to the levy to help fund future projects and maintain current services in the case of state legislation restricting the county’s financial flexibility.

"My overall concern is federal funding and state funding being cut," Berges said. "To me, that trickles down and it's demanding more of your local government, cities and counties to pick up those services."

Berges said if the commission raises the mill levy by one mill, it would result in an estimated increase of $23 per year for every $100,000 of home value.&nbsp;For agricultural land, one mill would cost about $7.50 per 40 acres, meaning an 80-acre parcel would see an estimated $15 annual increase.

Commissioner Nathan Leiker said the commission has managed the budget and mill levy well in recent years and encouraged taking a step back to consider the possibility of an increase carefully.

"What's it going to take to keep businesses here in our community? What's it going to take to recruit business? Is working with our property taxes the direction we want to go, or is there an alternative route?" Leiker said.

Berges also said that future discussions may be needed on how sales tax could serve as a long-term alternative to property tax.&nbsp;

The mill levy discussion is set to continue at the commission’s July 15 meeting.

Ellis County Commission discusses 2026 budget, raising mill levy

SALINA — On a recent morning, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) demonstrated techniques that allow law enforcement officers to respond effectively during traffic stops.

During a simulated traffic stop at the KHP Training Academy in Salina, KHP Lt. Gregory Etris along with Chair &amp; Professor of the Criminal Justice Program at FHSU, Dr. Tamara Lynn conducted a mock traffic stop scenario that displayed how officers should respond to certain people, depending on their personality/behavior. The technique falls under the&nbsp;<a href="https://discinsights.com/pages/disc-theory#:~:text=DISC%20theory%20is%20a%20model,leadership%20development%2C%20and%20hiring%20practices.">DISC Esoterica® model</a>, that is used to decipher different personality/behavior styles.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://discinsights.com/pages/disc-theory#:~:text=DISC%20theory%20is%20a%20model,leadership%20development%2C%20and%20hiring%20practices.">DISC Esoterica® model</a>&nbsp;falls under the umbrella of the&nbsp;<a href="https://ndtccenter.com/">National De-escalation Training Center (NDTC) program</a>&nbsp;that is known to be 'the most comprehensive, innovative and evidence-based experiential program available for law enforcement professionals, around the country. NDTC training teaches officers to identify personality characteristic and traits quickly, in order to adjust their approach and maximize effective communication and interaction with an individual.

According to Fort Hays State University, the NDTC model helps trainees learn to:

• Respond in a procedurally just manner.

• Recognize individuals experiencing a mental and/or physical crisis.

• Apply behavior modeling to resolve potential conflicts.

• Recognize and respond to active and passive emotional states.

According to Dr. Lynn, FHSU offers the de-escalation training through its criminal justice program. Dr. Lynn describes that skills developed through the training at FHSU, will help students before they enter law enforcement as opposed to developing those skills through experiences as a professional officer.

"The troopers are trained to recognize a personality within seconds and start making those observations, even before they start walking up to the car," said Dr. Lynn. "This is the skill set we want the new cadets to get much earlier in their career."

KHP Public Resource Officer, Todd Hileman gave his comments on what he thinks about the training.

"Lt. Etris and I were talking about how for the first part of our career we had to learn this through experience, but now this is great that they (students) can get this experience in the classroom before going out into the field," said Hileman.

Lt. Etris trains new cadets in the KHP academy to conduct these scenarios,&nbsp; before they experience it in the real world. He describes what they teach throughout these sessions.

"We teach that being patient and allowing that energy to be used up by the individual prior to us making contact, works to our advantage because now that person has had a chance to vent out that emotion and now we can be able to have a normal conversation," said Lt. Etris. "The officer is going to want to acknowledge that emotion, because that acknowledgement helps open up that communication."

The model also helps reduce the stigma of decreasing the 'fear' that may arise within an individual, when law enforcement officers approach them during a traffic stop. Lt. Etris commented on what law enforcement professionals have discussed to reduce that stigma.

"We asked ourselves, what can we do to change the mindset of society when they do encounter law enforcement," said Lt. Etris. "This skill set allows you to better understand people and the better we can do that, I think we are able to resolve things more peacefully."

"It's all about how you approach, speak and treat them," said officer Hileman.

FHSU facilitates NDTC's four training modalities, including 8-hour de-escalation fundamentals (online or in person), 16-hour de-escalation and a 32-hour 'train the trainer program.' the FHSU criminal justice program and University Police facilitate the Central Region Training Center of the National de-escalation Training Center. Dr. Lynn coordinates with regions across the U.S. to facilitate training sessions to agencies from other areas.

Gregory Etris along with Chair &amp; Professor of the Criminal Justice Program at FHSU, Dr. Tamara Lynn conducted a mock traffic stop scenario that displayed how officers should respond to certain people, depending on their personality/behavior. The technique falls under the&nbsp;<a href="https://discinsights.com/pages/disc-theory#:~:text=DISC%20theory%20is%20a%20model,leadership%20development%2C%20and%20hiring%20practices.">DISC Esoterica® model</a>, that is used to decipher different personality/behavior styles.<figure>

"This is the skill set we want the new cadets to get much earlier in their career."KHP Public Resource Officer, Todd Hileman gave his comments on what he thinks about the training."Lt. Etris and I were talking about how for the first part of our career we had to learn this through experience, but now this is great that they (students) can get this experience in the classroom before going out into the field," said Hileman.Lt. Etris trains new cadets in the KHP academy to conduct these scenarios,&nbsp; before they experience it in the real world. He describes what they teach throughout these sessions."We teach that being patient and allowing that energy to be used up by the individual prior to us making contact, works to our advantage because now that person has had a chance to vent out that emotion and now we can be able to have a normal conversation," said Lt. Etris. "The officer is going to want to acknowledge that emotion, because that acknowledgement helps open up that communication."<figure>

 </figure>The model also helps reduce the stigma of decreasing the 'fear' that may arise within an individual, when law enforcement officers approach them during a traffic stop. Lt. Etris commented on what law enforcement professionals have discussed to reduce that stigma."We asked ourselves, what can we do to change the mindset of society when they do encounter law enforcement," said Lt. Etris. "This skill set allows you to better understand people and the better we can do that, I think we are able to resolve things more peacefully.""It's all about how you approach, speak and treat them," said officer Hileman.FHSU facilitates NDTC's four training modalities, including 8-hour de-escalation fundamentals (online or in person), 16-hour de-escalation and a 32-hour 'train the trainer program.' the FHSU criminal justice program and University Police facilitate the Central Region Training Center of the National de-escalation Training Center. KHP/FHSU demonstrate technique allowing officers to respond effectively during traffic stops

On a hot summer day, there is nothing better than a cool drink of clean water to quench one’s thirst. 

For cattle out on pasture, their need for clean, accessible water is important for good health, said the experts from Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute on a recent&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksre-learn.com/cattle-chat-watering-requirements-in-summer">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

“Cattle that are eating dry hay will need to consume more water than cows eating fresh grass, and if they are in a hot environment they’ll drink about twice as much water as cows in the winter,” K-State beef cattle nutritionist Philip Lancaster said.

In the summer, Lancaster estimates the cows need to drink about two gallons of water for every 100 pounds of body weight. And adult cattle aren’t the only animals on pasture with a need for water.

“Even though their diet is mainly milk, calves also need to drink water to help their rumen properly digest any foods they are starting to consume,” Lancaster said.

Not only is it important to provide water access for cattle, but the quality of the water is key to good health, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said. “Anytime cattle are not hydrated as well as they could be, they are suspectable to disease as in the case of pneumonia,” Larson said.

One source of water for cattle on pastures is ponds.

“When the water quality is important, it is best to keep the cattle out of the ponds by fencing them out and piping the water to a tank,” K-State Research and Extension fisheries specialist Joe Gerken said. “Having a pipe that runs through an earthen dam regulates the temperature so the cattle will want to drink more.”

Another option is to grant the cattle limited access to the pond by fencing them out except for a gravel path to one part of the pond, Gerken said. “Depending on the herd size, generally speaking, this path is from 20-40 feet wide, and because it is gravel, the cattle won’t linger as long due to the way it feels on their hooves,” Gerken said.

He also said the gravel keeps sediment from filling the pond. “With this system, the pond can be healthy, and the cattle can still get the benefits they need from it,” Gerken said.

three hits and the Hays Larks beat the Kansas Cannons 9-5 Tuesday evening at Augusts
High School. The Larks scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take the
lead then added two in the seventh and one in the ninth to run their winning
streak to four while handing the Cannons their sixth straight loss.

The
Larks (19-4-1) grabbed the early lead with a four-run third. A hit
batter followed by back-to-back singles from Reid and Kaleb Duncan loaded the
bases. Jackson Babcock drove in the first run with an infield single. Dylan
LaRue drove in the second run with a single to right, Lorenzo Rios walked then Brady
Kreutzer had a sacrifice fly.

The
Cannons (12-13-1) answered with five in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4
lead, but the Larks came right back with single runs in fourth and fifth. Lane
Sparks sacrifice fly scored Duncan to tie the game 5-5 in the fourth. Brady
Kreutzer’s two-out solo home run to left gave them the lead for good.

Wilbert Espinal had an RBI double and Lyssy an RBI single in the seventh. Espinal
scored on a Duncan’s sacrifice fly in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Four
Larks pitchers combined to throw 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Adrian
Najar (2-0) allowed one hit with five strikeouts and one walk over 2 2/3
innings and picked up the win. Paul Smith pitched two hitless innings with four
strikeouts, Lane Sparks and Trent Baker both pitched a hitless frame to close
out the game. 

Starter
Dylan Hill allowed five runs on three hits with five walks and no strikeouts.

The
five pitchers combined to strike out 14 Cannon batters.

The
Larks had 13 hits against the Cannons. It’s their 10th-straight game of double-digit
hits. The Larks have had 10 or more hits in 17 of their 24 games this season.

James E. (Jim) Hinkhouse

Shirley (Underwood) Smith, 88, of Hays, Kansas, passed away
on May 14, 2025, at HaysMed, Hays, Kansas. She was born on October 11, 1936, in
Bird City, Cheyenne County, Kansas, the daughter of Irvin and Dorothy
(McTaggart) Underwood. A lifelong Kansan and beloved educator, Shirley will be
remembered for her warm smile, dedicated work ethic, sense of humor and caring
heart.

Shirley grew up in Bird
City, where she graduated from Bird City Rural High School in 1955. After high
school, she pursued her passion for teaching at Fort Hays State University,
where she earned her teaching degree and later completed a master’s degree.
Education was very important to Shirley, and she carried a love of learning
throughout her life.

After completing her
education, Shirley embarked on a 34-year teaching career in the Hays, Kansas,
school system. Throughout her tenure, she inspired countless students with her
enthusiasm for learning and her nurturing guidance. Colleagues remember her as
a dedicated educator who touched many lives and was highly respected in the
community.

On June 7, 1959,
Shirley married her sweetheart, Ralph J. Smith, Jr., in Bird City, Kansas. They
shared 40 happy years together, cherishing family gatherings, community events,
and quiet moments at home, until Ralph’s passing on May 4, 1999. Shirley treasured
her family and took great pride in the accomplishments of her nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents, Irvin
and Dorothy Underwood; and her brothers, Wallace and Warren Underwood.

Shirley is survived by
her nieces and nephews, Tammy (Underwood) Zimbelman of Emporia, Kansas; Brad
(Susan) Underwood of Champaign, Illinois; Kim (Roseanna) Underwood of Bird
City, Kansas; Shari (Underwood) Potts of Pensacola, Florida; and TJ (Darla) Underwood
of Florida; Sister-in-law, Jan Underwood of McPherson, Kansas; Great nieces and
nephews, Kale (Robbie Reed) Zimbelman of Wichita, Kansas; Lee (Cami) Zimbelman
of Emporia, Kansas; Tyler Underwood of Champaign, Illinois; Katie Underwood of
Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Ashley Underwood of Chicago, Illinois; and Julian
Sams of Pensacola, Florida; Great-great nieces and nephews: Derek, Julia, and
Andrew Zimbelman of Emporia, Kansas; She is also survived by her brother,

Kenneth
Kisner (70) of Wichita Falls, TX passed away on July 4, 2025, at Wichita Falls
Hospice, with his wife Connie by his side. Kenneth was born Kenneth Dean Kisner
to Isaidore P. Kisner and Mathilda M. Werth Kisner in Hays, Kansas on December
8, 1954.&nbsp; He was the first of four
children, which included two brothers, Keith and Kurt, and one sister, Kelley.
They were raised on the family farm and ranch just south of Hays.

As
a youth, Ken was well trained in crop and cattle/livestock production. He also
learned the skill of hand milking a small heard of dairy cows on a daily basis.
Therefore, he maintained a strong work ethic in his life’s work and career
pursuits. 

Ken
attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Hays High School. He was a
Saxophone player in band. He attended Fort Hays State University and graduated
with a degree in Business in 1980.&nbsp; Ken
would often laugh and tease that he had kneeled enough in church as a youth,
that the Lord would surely forgive a small indiscretion as an adult. His home
church was St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Ken
met Connie S. Oelkers Flamik in the fall of 1977. She was a young, widowed
mother of an active three-year-old toddler, Tyler. The three of them formed a
lasting bond almost immediately. They spent their first Christmas together that
year while meeting their families. They were married 2½ years later on June 1,
1979. In addition, through love and commitment, Ken took on the additional
responsibility of adopting Tyler as his own. Then ten months later another son,
Trevor, was born to complete the family of four.

Ken
had a thirty-year career working for several Farm Credit Associations. He was
first hired by the 9th Farm Credit District Office in Wichita,
Kansas and was trained in their application and loan work process through
Production Credit Association. As is often said, “You can take the boy out of
the farm, but not the farm out of the boy!”&nbsp;
Ken held positions at various points in time as a Loan Officer,
Appraiser, Inspector, Manager, Regional Appraiser, and Vice President. During
his career, they moved through three states including Kansas, Oklahoma, and
Texas, eventually settling in Wichita Falls for thirty-eight years. He retired
from Capital Farm Credit in 2010.

After
retirement, Ken started his own business known as Texoma Ag Valuations where he
did agriculture and industrial related chattel appraisals and inspections. He
established customers in numerous states, through lending institutions, banks,
and individuals. He was highly regarded as someone who was ethical,
professional, honest, trustworthy, reliable, and enjoyable to work with.

Ken
was a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the
International Society of Livestock Appraisers, and the American Society of Farm
Equipment Appraisers. He had completed training in Constructive Agriculture
Lending through Farm Credit Services and was certified through Auction Insight
Certified Appraisers. Ken was also employed with the SAM division of the
Federal Government as an Independent Contractor, doing appraisal and inspection
work for several USDA offices.

Ken
was an athletic individual and loved being outside. He enjoyed playing
basketball, tennis, and golf. As time and responsibilities became more
prominent in his life he took up walking two miles a day. During his time in
college, he worked for a garden center and learned the art of landscaping. He
carried that knowledge throughout his life.

Ken
was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. He held onto his strong belief
in Christ from his earliest teachings. In addition, Ken was a beloved husband,
father, and friend. He will be greatly missed, and we look forward to reuniting
with him in Heaven. Until then, we know that he will forever be around us and
in our hearts.

is survived by his wife, Connie; two sons, Trevor Kisner and Tyler Kisner and
wife Liberty, and their family: Lawson Kisner, Geordy Deatherage and wife
Madison, and Logan Deatherage.&nbsp;

Kenneth Kisner 

Andrew Keith Pfannenstiel, 48, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 17, 2025. Andy was born on June 9, 1976, to Duane (Whitey) Pfannenstiel and Sally Jo (Mapes) Hanhardt. 

Andy grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School. He continued his education at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University.  He later received his Master’s Degree at Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, Arizona. Andy earned the title of Physician Assistant-Certified from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Elite Health of Colorado was Andy’s growing and successful business.  Andy’s warmth and genuine care for his patients grew his practice and added a new meaning to 'Elite Healthcare'! 

'Dad' was his title!  Sophia Joelle, 17, Brooks Alexander, 15, and Scarlett Elyse, 14, were loved and nurtured by their dad.  Andy and all three children were baptized together at New Life Church in Colorado Springs on May 9, 2025.  Their family activities kept their lives busy, productive, and happy. On a family picture in their home, the inscription read, “To the world you are a dad.  To our family you are the world.”&nbsp;

Andy is mourned and survived by his mother, Sally Jo Hanhardt, Hays, his father, Duane Pfannenstiel and wife Becky, stepmom, and brother Jesse, all of Topeka.  His step-sisters, Shelly Green (Matt) of Cody, Wyoming and Betsy Wagner (Travis) of Olathe, and their families.

 Proceeding him in death were his stepdad, Roger Hanhardt, his grandparents Keith and Maxine Mapes, and Connie and Marcella Pfannenstiel. Leaving to mourn his loss are his aunts, uncles, and cousins, many friends, football buddies, colleagues at hospitals and Urgent Care Clinics throughout Kansas, Arizona and Colorado.

 Andy’s best one liner was a question I would ask him before he hung up from our daily phone call.  “What are you going to do today son?”  His answer was, “I’m going to work to stomp out disease and save lives.”  And that is what he did.  Andy was loved. A celebration of life for Andy will be held on June 27th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Woodmoor Barn Community Center located at 1691 Woodmoor Dr. Monument, Co.

 Andy’s memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2000 Main Street, Hays, Ks. at 10:00 am on July 12th 2025. Memorials should be made to Andrew Pfannenstiel. These funds will be used for the children’s education.

Andy grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School. He continued his education at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. He later received his Master’s Degree at Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, Arizona. Andy earned the title of Physician Assistant-Certified from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Elite Health of Colorado was Andy’s growing and successful business. Andy’s warmth and genuine care for his patients grew his practice and added a new meaning to 'Elite Healthcare'! 'Dad' was his title! Sophia Joelle, 17, Brooks Alexander, 15, and Scarlett Elyse, 14, were loved and nurtured by their dad. Andy and all three children were baptized together at New Life Church in Colorado Springs on May 9, 2025. Their family activities kept their lives busy, productive, and happy. On a family picture in their home, the inscription read, “To the world you are a dad. To our family you are the world.”&nbsp;Andy is mourned and survived by his mother, Sally Jo Hanhardt, Hays, his father, Duane Pfannenstiel and wife Becky, stepmom, and brother Jesse, all of Topeka. His step-sisters, Shelly Green (Matt) of Cody, Wyoming and Betsy Wagner (Travis) of Olathe, and their families. Proceeding him in death were his stepdad, Roger Hanhardt, his grandparents Keith and Maxine Mapes, and Connie and Marcella Pfannenstiel. Leaving to mourn his loss are his aunts, uncles, and cousins, many friends, football buddies, colleagues at hospitals and Urgent Care Clinics throughout Kansas, Arizona and Colorado. Andy’s best one liner was a question I would ask him before he hung up from our daily phone call. “What are you going to do today son?” His answer was, “I’m going to work to stomp out disease and save lives.” And that is what he did. Andy was loved. A celebration of life for Andy will be held on June 27th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Woodmoor Barn Community Center located at 1691 Woodmoor Dr. Monument, Co. Andy’s memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2000 Main Street, Hays, Ks. at 10:00 am on July 12th 2025. Memorials should be made to Andrew Pfannenstiel. These funds will be used for the children’s education. Private family burial will be at a later date

Anita Loraine Mead, age 76, graduated to heaven on June 27,
2025, passing peacefully at her home in WaKeeney, KS. She was born on January
19, 1949, in Garden City, KS, to Glenn and Dixie (Pash) Moore.

On May 25, 1968, Anita married the love of her life, Dennis
Mead, in Garden City. He graduated to heaven on April 5, 2007, and Anita has
missed him every day since. The two were high school sweethearts, both
graduating from Garden City High School, where their lifelong journey as
soulmates began.

Anita continued her education, ultimately earning a master’s
degree in Higher Education Administration through studies at Friends University
and Fort Hays State University. Her professional journey reflected her
dedication to serving others—working in various roles at law offices, Cargill,
Garden City Community College, Fort Hays State University, and US BioEnergy.

She is survived by her daughter, Tiffany (Joe) Bolen; her
grandson, Chace; her sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Gary Weber; and her
nephew, Jake Weber.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dennis
Mead, and her parents, Glenn and Dixie Moore.

A Celebration of Life and Praises to Our Father God will be
held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Generations Church in
WaKeeney, KS. Pastor Robby Hernandez will guide the celebration.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
Generations Church, sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th
Street, WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Ride through history Saturday with the Tour Die Kapellen, a cycling tour showcasing the rich Volga-German heritage of Ellis County.

The sixth-annual Tour of Chapels features stops at St. Catherine Church in Catherine, the Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer and St. Francis Church in Munjor.

 </figure>By TONY GUERRERO Hays PostRide through history Saturday with the Tour Die Kapellen, a cycling tour showcasing the rich Volga-German heritage of Ellis County.The sixth-annual Tour of Chapels features stops at St. Catherine Church in Catherine, the Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer and St. Francis Church in Munjor.Kay Werth, president of the Hays Area Bicyclists, said the tour began in 2019 as a partnership between the rural communities, the Hays Symphony and the Hays CVB."It's interesting this year that the demographics of our tour are almost 50% of the people that are doing the bike ride are over 65 years," Werth said. "People think that it's just for young and active people but it is a very doable sport to keep their wellness regimen going."The event offers several route options from 15 to 100 miles, all starting at Hays Municipal Park, 100 Main St., along with a bus tour, live music and homemade meals. New this year are optional church stops and the ability to create custom routes.<figure>

 </figure>The 15-mile beginner route begins at 8:45 a.m. and will be guided by three experienced cyclists, with a stop in Munjor to hear violinist Rigo Murillo perform at the chapel.All routes from 30 to 100 miles will depart from the downtown park at 7 a.m., except for the 54-mile mixed surface route, which starts at 7 a.m.The Ellis County Sheriff's Department will provide an escort out of Hays for those cycling 30 miles or more at 7 a.m.Werth said new optional stops along the routes include St. Ann Catholic Church in Walker, Our Lady Help of Christians in Antonino and St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen.<figure>

 </figure>The bus tour, starting at the park at 8 a.m., will visit the same churches featured on the bike routes and pass by landmarks such as George Grant’s Villa, the Old Walker Air Base and the ruins of Emmeram Church.Jerry Braun, a descendant of Volga Germans and Ellis County Historian, will guide the bus tour. Werth advises against drivers following cyclists in their own vehicles for safety.Werth said around 200 participants have signed up across all routes. Bike ride registration is still open until the day of the event, from 6 to 6:45 a.m., for a $60 fee that includes a post-ride German meal, a T-shirt, and a swag bag.Announcements, National Anthem and Invocation are at 6:45 a.m.The bus is currently full, but Werth said those interested can check for cancellations or last-minute openings. The Hot Shots of Pfeifer will play polka music.Drinks will be available from Defiance Local Brewery Co., Budweiser and Coors, with non-alcoholic options also offered.
