One year after former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody resigned, he returns to town for his own criminal case

MARION — Former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody returned Monday to the town where he&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/08/11/police-stage-chilling-raid-on-marion-county-newspaper-seizing-computers-records-and-cellphones/">raided a newspaper</a>&nbsp;to face a dozen journalists along with a felony charge for his actions after the raid.

Cody&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/08/12/police-defend-raid-on-kansas-newspaper-amid-backlash-over-brazen-violation-of-press-freedom/">led police</a>&nbsp;in the Aug. 11, 2023, raid on the Marion County Record, the editor’s home and a councilwoman’s home under the false pretense that a newspaper reporter had committed identity theft by looking up restaurateur Kari Newell’s driving record. Special prosecutors charged Cody with one count of interference with the judicial process, a low-level felony, for asking Newell after the raid to&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/08/20/marion-woman-told-investigators-she-deleted-texts-with-police-chief-to-avoid-rumor-of-affair/">delete text messages</a>&nbsp;between the two. Cody told her he was concerned their relationship would be misinterpreted, according to court documents.

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/08/05/one-year-after-chilling-police-raid-on-kansas-newspaper-aftershocks-linger-in-marion/">One year later</a>, Cody is party to five federal civil lawsuits in addition to the criminal case.

Monday’s hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes, was Cody’s first public appearance in the town since he resigned as police chief amid intense scrutiny in October 2023. In a courtroom with an audience mostly of reporters, Cody was straight-faced and silent.

District Judge Ryan Rosauer rejected Cody’s motion to dismiss the charge for lack of probable cause.

Rosauer, prosecutors and Cody’s defense agreed that Cody won’t be required to appear in court for minor hearings and case proceedings, including the case’s next scheduled hearing on Dec. 16. Court filings show Cody is believed to be living in Hawaii.

Cody and Sal Intagliata, a Wichita attorney who is defending Cody, declined to answer reporters’ questions as they left the courthouse. Intagliata said the “full story” would come out as the case is litigated in court. Cody didn’t speak.

Intagliata, as he ushered Cody into a car, told reporters: “If I have any comment at all on behalf of Mr. Cody, it would be this: that the people of Marion County, really the most important people involved in this situation, take a minute to reserve judgment, take a moment to, like, avoid jumping to conclusions, and allow the system to work.”

Cody won’t be required to pay a cash bond. Instead, Rosauer ordered a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, which Cody only will have to pay if he fails to show up to court when required.

If convicted, Cody would face presumed probation.

Following the hearing, Marion County Record editor and publisher Eric Meyer answered questions from a dozen reporters who gathered outside the newspaper office across the street from the courthouse. They asked him to respond to Intagliata.

“We can take a delay of the justice system, as long as the delay actually results in proper assessment of things,” Meyer said. “We’re not in a hurry. He should have plenty of time to think about what he did.”

Meyer said Cody shouldn’t be the only one who is charged with a crime. Others, Meyer said, should have intervened — including other police officers, the sheriff, the county attorney, and the magistrate who signed the search warrants.

“Somewhere the system failed,” Meyer said. “These are the people who are supposed to protect our rights. They didn’t do it. That’s why I hate to see Gideon Cody be the fall guy for all this. Yes, he deserves a great deal of credit or blame for what went on in here, but there are others who were well aware of it.”

Former police chief, who raided Kansas newspaper, returns to face criminal charge

Annual Pioneer Day Features Nicodemus Township History Trail Bike Tour&nbsp;Interview Series: &nbsp;Announcing the Newly Formed Band, “Butch Creek”&nbsp;

Chris Farrell from Hill City shared that his introduction to music was in elementary school, 5th Grade, in Mr. Warren Stafford’s band class when he tried out to be a Drummer. &nbsp;That began his musical venture.&nbsp;

Chris was influenced by 80s music and like one of his music idols, Eddie Van Halen, he progressed from drums to guitar. &nbsp;He bought a Sears, Roebuck and Company guitar and amplifier and started playing music he was listening to on cassette tapes and the radio. &nbsp;

During high school Chris played in several "garage bands" with classmates and friends. &nbsp;His biggest performance and claim to fame is when he played drums in front of thousands and thousands of people at the Air Force Academy football stadium in Colorado Springs. &nbsp;A select number of Hill City High School marching band members was granted the opportunity to play and entertain at the Air Force Academy on Band Day during halftime at a football game.&nbsp;

During Chris’ 30 year stay in Denver, at times he played with a hole in the band that consisted of friends and co-workers. &nbsp;But primarily he played at open mic nights as a one man band in the Denver Metro area. &nbsp;Chris moved back to Hill City in 2022 and connected with Chris Gansel and the guys.&nbsp;

Chris said that he likes playing both drums and guitar equally but his instrument of choice is the guitar.

&nbsp;Currently Mr. Farrell is playing in the newly formed band, “Butch Creek”. &nbsp;The Butch Creek band gets its name in honoring Butch Owen. &nbsp;The band was put together based on the “Open Mic Night” at Mikkelson’s Tavern. &nbsp;The origination of the band came together by the guys who have been dedicated to helping setup, practice and play for open mic night. &nbsp;The band’s music style is Classic Rock, Country, Blues and Alternative. &nbsp;The “Butch Creek” band members are Chris Farrell, Chris Gansel, Fred Owen, Jeramy Owen, Eric "Dok" Nevins and Rex Striggow. &nbsp;Butch Creek is the “make shift house band” for Mikkelson’s Tavern “Open Mic Night” and they also play at other events.&nbsp;

Farrell became acquainted with the Nicodemus Bike Tour through Karla Bates-Adams. &nbsp;Both were participants of Leadership Graham County and serve on the Graham County Travel and Tourism Development Committee.&nbsp;Chris said this is a beautiful time of year to ride a bike in the quiet countryside, see wildlife, fall colors and appreciate our area. &nbsp;He added that this event will also provide the opportunity to reflect on the importance of community, what this area represents and what the founders of Nicodemus went through and found in this settlement.

Chris Gansel also from Hill City had an early introduction which formed his love of music. &nbsp;Chris' mother, Kathy played piano in a bar band in Idaho to help support herself while in college and prior to marrying and moving to Hill City. &nbsp;For a few times in the early 60s she played keyboard with a local band. &nbsp;

Chris learned a "little" piano from his mom but states his true love became the guitar. &nbsp;His older brother, Steve bought a guitar and took lessons. &nbsp;When he wasn’t playing it Chris would pick it up and mess around with it. &nbsp;

Chris said his instrument of choice is the guitar.&nbsp;After Chris’ junior year of high school, his brother Steve, Jody Pembleton and Tyce Bruton were trying to form a band and needed a bass player but couldn’t find one. &nbsp;Chris agreed to play bass and bought a $50.00 used bass guitar. &nbsp;In the summer 1979 the band Legend played four dances. &nbsp;Chris along with his brother played in several "garage bands" each summer until he was out of college. &nbsp;

During the summer they would form a band and then break up during the school year.&nbsp;In 1985 Chris and his brother moved to Nashville, TN with the thought of becoming song writers. &nbsp;They had three songs published but none made it onto a record. &nbsp;In Nashville they played in the bands Starwood and Souvenirs. &nbsp;Chris got married in 1987 and played until the early 90s when his daughter was born. &nbsp;His family then moved back to Hill City. &nbsp;

He started playing with a “folk” group in church twice a month. &nbsp;After meeting Todd Toman they put together the band “Country Highway” which played classic country &amp; rock, current country songs and some bluegrass music. &nbsp;In 2008 when Country Highway was just starting Chris and the band played for his parent’s (Kathy and Frank) 50th anniversary. 

Unfortunately, his brother Steve was not able to be there.

Now, Mr. Gansel is playing in the newly formed band, “Butch Creek”. &nbsp;Chris became aware of the Nicodemus Bike Tour through fellow band member Chris Farrell. Gansel said that promoting this event is a natural fit for him with his position as Director of Graham County Recreation Commission (GCRC). &nbsp;He added that the history of Nicodemus is a very important part of the history in our area. &nbsp;

He’s encouraging people to get out, get some fresh air and get acquainted or re-acquainted with a real important part of the history in this area.&nbsp;When asked for further comment regarding this event, Mr Gansel stated, "In our current political climate and the fact that it is an election year, we are being bombarded from all sides. &nbsp;Race is still a thing: &nbsp;you can't deny it. &nbsp;Much of the intensity and volume of injustice that you see elsewhere didn't seem to be as prevalent in our county, but the black community in our area had to feel some racial tension". &nbsp;

This event continues to break through all types of boundaries.”

In Chris’ final statement he said, this is a chance to get out in our area, enjoy nature, our surroundings and also be aware of what freedom is really worth.

Chris and the band members of Butch Creek host an open mic night at Mikkelson’s Tavern on the second Saturday of each month. &nbsp;Everyone who wants to sing and play music is welcome. &nbsp;

They are also playing during the Inaugural Nicodemus Township History Trail Bike tour taking place on this Saturday, October 12, 2024. &nbsp;

The band will start playing in the park around 11:30 AM.&nbsp;The Nicodemus Historical Society invites your entire family including the kids to bring your bikes and ride a FREE shorter route that will take you on a tour around the historic town of Nicodemus to various silhouettes, historic building sites and a few of the historic tour signs.

Starting at 8:00 AM come for the free pancake breakfast sponsored by Kansas Black Farmers Association. &nbsp;Share a day of community history, fun and delicious food by “RC RubGrub BBQ” of Glade. &nbsp;At 11:30 AM listen to live music performed by Graham County’s local band, Butch Creek. &nbsp;A free showing of the documentary which illustrates the first settlers arriving in Nicodemus, “Ellis Trail To Nicodemus" will be featured on the big screen at 2:30 PM in the Visitor's Center. &nbsp;The day is expected to be great fun.

Nicodemus Township History Trail Bike Tour Interview Series: 'Butch Creek'

LARNED—The grounds of the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum will soon be filled with the rumbling of the sounds of antique and vintage farm equipment.

Prepare for a carnival-like atmosphere, and join the crowd as everyone enjoys the weekend of farming, food and fun on October 12 and 13 for the 24th Annual Tired Iron Show.

This year’s event will highlight John Deere.

Upon arrival, visitors will enter through the Peddlers Market gateway to see the booths of various arts, crafts and collectibles. There will be several food concession trucks as well.

One of the many returning activities at this year’s event includes the ever-popular Anvil Shoot.

The Kansas Anvil Shooters will shoot the anvil three times each day.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State linebacker Makel Williams was named the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday following the 31-21 win over No. 12 ranked Central Missouri this past weekend.

Williams led the Tiger defense with 14 tackles and one pass break up in the 31-21 win over nationally ranked Central Missouri. His 14 tackles were a new career high for him at FHSU. It was the third time this season he recorded double figures in tackles for a game. Williams currently leads the MIAA in total tackles with 53, averaging 8.8 per game.

Williams joins Jaylen Cottrell of Central Oklahoma (Offensive Athlete of the Week) and Noah Guastella of Northwest Missouri State (Special Teams Athlete of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office for October 7, 2024.

The CARE Council is made up of 12 community volunteers who review the applications to determine funding for the United Way of Ellis County, City of Hays Social Service Funds and Alcohol Tax Funds, Ellis County Alcohol Tax Funds and now the addition of Ellis County Outside Funding.

This meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 8th at 10:30 at Brief Space. This meeting is for any 501(c)3 who will be or is interested in applying for funding from the above entities.

Shirley Bracelin of St. Francis, KS passed away on Friday,
September 27, 2024.&nbsp; Shirley was born to
Arthur and Martha Lueschen.&nbsp; She attended
and graduated from St. Francis High School.&nbsp;


She married Darrel Lee Purvis on January 27, 1957, and had
two children, Mark and David.&nbsp; Darrel
passed away in 2003.&nbsp; Shirley married
Keith Bracelin on February 24, 2013.

Shirley is survived by her son, David (Victoria) Purvis,
Shawnee, KS. and daughter in law, Karen Purvis (Rusty) Blehm, Meade, KS; four
grandchildren: Josh (Tiffany) Purvis, Jennifer Taylor, Michael Purvis, and
Jordan Purvis; and two great-granddaughters, Jessa Taylor and Isabelle Purvis.&nbsp; She also leaves behind many nieces and
nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, Darrel
Purvis and Keith Bracelin; son, Mark Purvis; great-grandson, Wyatt Windholz;
siblings, Phyllis Hook, Paul Lueschen and Beverly Crane.

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football returned to the receiving votes list of the AFCA Top 25 Poll released on Monday, October 7. With the 31-21 win over then No. 12 ranked Central Missouri this past week, the Tigers knocked the Mules from the Top 25 to the receiving votes list as well. FHSU currently owns an overall record of 4-2.

With Central Missouri dropping to the receiving votes list, the MIAA now has three schools listed in the Top 25. Pittsburg State leads the group, ranked No. 7, followed by Central Oklahoma at No. 13 and Emporia State at No. 18. Fort Hays State, Central Missouri, and Northwest Missouri State are all among the receiving votes list.

Fort Hays State plays host to Washburn University this weekend in Hays. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 12) at Lewis Field Stadium.

WASHINGTON (AP)— U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden hosted a somber memorial ceremony at the White House Monday to mark the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The Bidens looked on as Rabbi Aaron Alexander of Washington’s Adas Israel Congregation recited the Jewish remembrance prayer for the more than 1,200 people, including dozens of Americans, killed that day, listing the towns, villages and festival site that were the scenes of the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Three Americans are dead including Judih Weinstein Haggai and Gadi Haggai, a couple in their 70s, and Itay Chen, 19, according to Israeli authorities.&nbsp;

Four American-Israeli hostages are believed to be still alive&nbsp;&nbsp;Keith Siegel, 65; Sagui Dekel-Chen, 36; Eden Alexander, 20 and Omer Neutra, 22.

The president then lit a lone memorial candle placed on a small table at the center of the Blue Room before they observed a moment of silence.

Earlier in the day, Biden spoke with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, the White House said.&nbsp;

Israelis held somber ceremonies on Monday to mark a year since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-gaza-war-kibbutz-attack-anniversary-344b289751d8ee80d4909f15864f508c">the deadliest attack in the country's history</a>, a Hamas-led raid that shattered its sense of security and ignited wars on two fronts with no end in sight.

Hamas marked the anniversary of its Oct. 7, 2023, attack by firing a barrage of rockets at Tel Aviv, underscoring its resilience after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">a year of war and devastation in Gaza</a>. Lebanon's Hezbollah, which began firing rockets at Israel on Oct. 8 in support if its ally Hamas, vowed to keep up the barrages despite its recent losses.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-rockets-airstrikes-tel-aviv-11fb98655c256d54ecb5329284fc37d2">surprise cross-border attack one year ago</a>&nbsp;— which caught Israelis unprepared on a major Jewish holiday — shook their faith in their leaders and their military, and its aftershocks are still rippling across the region. Around 100 hostages captured that day have not been returned, a third of whom are believed to be dead, and cease-fire efforts have ground to a halt.

The war in Gaza rages on and Israel is fighting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-lebanon-what-to-know-hezbollah-incursion-c44358cb4c70db69bdab4b254cb2ed76">a new war against Hezbollah</a>. There is also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-lebanon-hezbollah-gaza-news-10-01-2024-eb175dff6e46906caea8b9e43dfbd3da">an escalating conflict with Iran</a>&nbsp;— which backs both Hamas and Hezbollah — that threatens to drag the region into an even more dangerous conflagration.

No formal commemorative event is planned in Gaza, where fighting is still underway,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/scars-of-war-0000019256a2d640a5fef6ba634b0000">huge areas have been completely destroyed</a>&nbsp;and most of the population&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a-year-of-fleeing-across-gaza-000001925701d383a5925f8f807f0000">have been driven from their homes</a>.

In Lebanon, meanwhile, an Israeli strike killed at least 10 firefighters, the latest in a series of strikes that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-israel-medics-hezbollah-hospitals-6c7f75c921c9deec0fa5c160ce639664">have killed dozens of first responders</a>, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. It said they were in a municipality building in the southern town of Baraachit that was hit as they prepared for a mission.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Israelis hold memorials and call for the return of hostages

Israelis flocked to ceremonies, cemeteries and memorial sites around the country, remembering the hundreds of victims, the dozens of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hostages-gaza-tunnels-hamas-israel-war-d8ecb415268e911cea09518acdaf7ba2">hostages still in captivity</a>&nbsp;and soldiers killed in battle. Commemorations were also planned&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hamas-attack-israel-anniversary-protests-b8f7428b707f2cf4300405feca0b570e">across Europe and elsewhere</a>.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted another 250.

Before dawn, hundreds of families of those killed at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-music-festival-6a55aae2375944f10ecc4c52d05f2ffe">Nova music festival</a>, joined by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, gathered at the site where at least 364 revelers were killed and many others were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hersh-goldberg-polin-israel-palestinians-gaza-hostages-0be443e7ce616cbce3f2cb984e7971ca">taken hostage</a>. As the sun rose, organizers played the same trance track that was abruptly halted when the barrage of rockets began.

At 6:29 a.m. — the exact minute Hamas launched its attack — the crowd observed a moment of silence. A woman’s piercing wail broke the quiet and booms echoed from the fighting in Gaza, just a few kilometers (miles) away.

“When we are here, we are near our loved ones,” said Sigal Bar-On, whose niece, Yuval Bar-On, 25, and her fiancé Moshe Shuva, 34, were killed in the attack two months before they were to be married.

“We can’t understand how a year has passed,” said Shimon Busika, whose 25-year-old son Yarden was killed at the festival.

At 6:31 a.m., four projectiles were launched from Gaza toward the same communities that came under attack last year, without disrupting the ceremony.

The military said another five rockets were launched from the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis toward central Israel, setting off air raid sirens in Tel Aviv. Two women were lightly wounded, according to first responders, and there was minor damage. The military said it struck the launch sites.

Meanwhile, the families of hostages still held in Gaza gathered near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Jerusalem residence and stood during a two-minute siren.

“We are here to remind (the hostages) that we haven’t forgotten them,” said Shiri Albag, whose daughter Liri is among the captives. In a speech addressing Netanyahu, she said: “We wont let you rest until all of them are back, every last one of them."

Netanyahu, who has come under heavy criticism for the security lapses on Oct. 7 and for not yet returning all the hostages, spoke at a small ceremony in Jerusalem, saying: “We went through a terrible massacre a year ago and we arose as a nation as lions."

An official state ceremony is set to air on Monday. It was prerecorded without an audience — apparently to avoid potential disruptions — in the southern city of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-militants-attack-cec3cc9e14969fd100d342ad1b90f7e4">Ofakim, which was among several communities and army bases that were attacked a year ago</a>.

Anger at Netanyahu's government prompted families of those killed and taken captive to hold a separate event in Tel Aviv. That event had been set to draw tens of thousands of people but was scaled back due to the threat of missile attacks from Iran and Hezbollah.

Israel responded to the Oct. 7 attack by launching&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-gaza-bombs-destruction-death-toll-scope-419488c511f83c85baea22458472a796">one of the deadliest and most destructive military campaigns</a>&nbsp;in recent history. The war in Gaza has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, displaced most of the territory's 2.3 million people and caused&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-palestinians-hunger-famine-42e404ec4ef3e2836a82a8d2b2315fd1">widespread hunger</a>.

“We lost everything we have,” said Liyala al-Shanar, who fled her home in Gaza City. “We live in a tent that doesn’t protect us from the winter cold or the summer heat."

Hamas remains in control of the territory and its forces have repeatedly regrouped in areas where Israel carried out major operations. On Sunday, Israeli forces encircled the northern town of Jabaliya and launched another major operation there that the military says is aimed at rooting out militants.

In Lebanon, Hezbollah has continued to fire rockets, missiles and drones at Israel even after a wave of Israeli strikes in recent weeks killed most of its top command — including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hezbollah-nasrallah-lebanon-israel-airstrikes-haret-hreik-7d89051bb420991cee29398243c250fe">longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah</a>&nbsp;— and pounded large areas of Lebanon. Israel launched what has so far been a limited ground operation across the border last week.

At least 1,400&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-global-diaspora-violence-israel-hezbollah-12b4de400efafed84f665a0ea3045c9f">Lebanese</a>, including civilians, medics and Hezbollah fighters, have been killed and 1.2 million driven from their homes. Israel says it aims to drive the militant group from its border so tens of thousands of Israeli citizens can return home.

Israel has also vowed to respond to a ballistic missile attack last week that Iran said was in response to the killing of Nasrallah,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-hamas-israel-30968a7acb31cd8b259de9650014b779">top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh</a>&nbsp;and one of its own Revolutionary Guard generals.

In a statement on Monday, Hezbollah vowed to continue its attacks until there is a cease-fire in Gaza, saying Israel “was and will remain a deadly, aggressive, cancerous gland that must be eliminated, no matter how long it takes.”

A woman’s piercing wail broke the quiet and booms echoed from the fighting in Gaza, just a few kilometers (miles) away.“When we are here, we are near our loved ones,” said Sigal Bar-On, whose niece, Yuval Bar-On, 25, and her fiancé Moshe Shuva, 34, were killed in the attack two months before they were to be married.“We can’t understand how a year has passed,” said Shimon Busika, whose 25-year-old son Yarden was killed at the festival.At 6:31 a.m., four projectiles were launched from Gaza toward the same communities that came under attack last year, without disrupting the ceremony.The military said another five rockets were launched from the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis toward central Israel, setting off air raid sirens in Tel Aviv. 1 year later: Remembering American hostages in Gaza

Roetta Dee (Floyd) Mann, 73, of Quinter, Kansas, passed away
on October 3, 2024, in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp;
Roetta was born to R.D. and Evelyn (Winger) Floyd on October 25, 1950,
in Syracuse, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Roetta grew up in rural Stanton County and graduated from
Johnson High School in 1968. She earned a degree in Home Economics from Kansas
State University, Manhattan, Kansas in 1972, where she met Dave. They married
on July 16, 1972, and moved to the family farm in Quinter. As a full partner on
the farm, Roetta drove trucks, worked with cattle (though she would NOT scoop
bunks), managed the books, and took great joy in her vegetable and flower
gardens.

Roetta found immense joy as a paraprofessional at Quinter
High School; one Facebook commenter noted she was the reason he graduated! She
had a unique ability to connect with people, making friends wherever she went,
and her presence was always marked by laughter and her distinctive “bling”
attire. A passionate traveler, she loved organizing memorable trips for family
and friends.

A dedicated member of the Gove Community Church, Roetta
volunteered extensively and served her community in various capacities. One of
her favorite roles was serving on the Dream First Bank Board of Directors.

Her priorities in life centered around her relationship with
God, her church, her family, and her many friends. Her grandchildren held a
special place in her heart, and after her recent cancer diagnosis, her goal was
to see them all grow up. Though the Lord had other plans, they know they are
loved by their Nana, who was immensely proud of them. Roetta fought cancer
bravely but found peace in knowing she would be going home to Jesus.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dave, children Shane
&amp; Mary Jo Mann of Quinter, Kansas, Tracey and Audrey Mann of Salina,
Kansas, and Tara Jo and Cory Crouse of Colby, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the best Nana to Barrett and Carson
Mann of Quinter, Kansas, Quincy, Austin, Whitney, and Elise Mann of Salina,
Kansas, and Reid Crouse of Colby, Kansas.&nbsp;
She is also survived by brothers Martie and Diane Floyd, Gary and Marla
Floyd of Johnson, Kansas, sister-in-law Deanna and Steve Schwab of Chico,
California, and several nieces and nephews, many of whom were graduates of
“Camp Roetta”, the best week of the summer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws Austin
and Dorothy (Bollinger) Mann.

Roetta’s smile and laughter will be missed so very much by
her family, friends, community members, and, oh, yes, Amazon, UPS, and
Fed-Ex.&nbsp; 

A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, October 13,
2024, at 2:30 PM at Quinter High School, located at 600 Long Street, Quinter,

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris opened a media blitz by the Democratic ticket on Sunday by appearing on the popular “Call Her Daddy” podcast about abortion, sexual abuse and other issues that resonate with women, working in some digs at her GOP opponent along the way.

In the roughly 40-minute interview, taped last week, the Democratic presidential nominee spoke about the grit it takes to be a woman seeking public office, the toughness her mother instilled in her and the importance of reproductive rights in this election.

The program is the most-listened-to podcast for women and it has millions of fans tuning in for talk about relationships, sex, mental health and women’s empowerment. The discussion with Harris was on the tame side for the show, with the vice president keeping her message focused, in part, on the value of ignoring people who have doubted her.

“I don’t hear no. I urge all the ‘Daddy Gang,’ don’t hear no, just don’t hear it,” she said. “I think it’s really important not to let other people define you.”

The interview was part of a broader media outreach effort by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Harris</a>&nbsp;and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, as the Democrats seek to boost their support in the final 30 days of the campaign against Republicans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jd-vance">JD Vance</a>.

Harris has been criticized for not doing more media interviews.

On the podcast, the Democratic nominee largely stuck to her usual messaging on abortion, and said that in her travels she's seen that even people who have strong opposition to abortion tell her they “are now seeing what’s happening and saying ‘Hmm, I didn’t intend for all this to happen' ” when they see the health problems arising since Roe v. Wade was repealed.

Harris dinged Trump as she has in recent speeches, leaning in on his integrity and saying “this guy is full of lies” when he talks about abortion and other issues. She dismissed Vance’s comments about “childless cat ladies” as “mean, and mean-spirited.”

Trump has continued to stress that abortion policy should be left to the states and that doctors have a duty to provide emergency care to women whose lives are in danger. Vance, for his part, has said his remark about childless women were misinterpreted and that he wants to support families.

Harris has taped an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that will air Monday night. She is booked Tuesday on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show, ABC’s “The View” and “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert on CBS. Walz will be on Jimmy Kimmel’s ABC show on Monday.

In a “60 Minutes” excerpt released Sunday, Harris navigated around a question about whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “a real close ally,” saying that “The better question is: Do we have an important alliance between the American people and the Israeli people? And the answer to that question is yes.”

And nearly a week after his verbal stumbles in the only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/debate-takeaways-vance-walz-harris-trump-5b6f219b555416ff579764048ac238a1">vice presidential debate</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/tim-walz">Walz</a>&nbsp;used his debut campaign appearance on a Sunday news show to try to fend off criticism of his stand on abortion rights and to “own up” to past misstatements.

Walz's Fox appearance also touched on the turmoil in the Middle East, with anchor Shannon Bream pressing the Minnesota governor on whether Israel has a right to preemptively attack&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-israel-iran-hezbollah-nuclear-sites-846c8779b2b95a3bebcf955c4e69cf6c">Iran's nuclear and oil facilities</a>&nbsp;in response to Tehran's firing of missiles against Israel. It was a question that Walz did not fully answer during his debate this past week with Vance, an Ohio senator.

Walz said Sunday that “specific operations will be dealt with at the time” and he spoke of ”consequences for what they do."

He said Israel has a right to defend itself and that Harris worked with Israel this past week to repel the Iranian attack.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">President Joe Biden</a>&nbsp;said last week he would not support an Israeli strike on sites related to Tehran’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-natanz-uranium-enrichment-underground-project-04dae673fc937af04e62b65dd78db2e0">nuclear program.</a>

Walz defended a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-politics-minnesota-state-government-timothy-walz-11c3b1d5269c929e442b979ff1bac73b">law that he signed as governor</a>&nbsp;to ensure abortion protections, saying it "puts the decision with the woman and her health care providers.”

Trump has said he would not sign a national abortion ban into law, and during the interview Sunday, Walz was asked whether he was calling that “a flat-out lie.”

Walz also faced questions in the interview about misstatements related to his military service, drunken driving arrest, infertility treatment for his family and claims to have been in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in China.

“I will own up when I misspeak,” Walz said. “I will own up when I make a mistake.”

He said he believes voters are more concerned by the fact that Vance could not acknowledge during their debate that Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden and that there could be restrictions on the infertility treatments, like the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tim-walz-ivf-fertility-jd-vance-fc5ebf8f37adb28cf45d0af51224a938">intrauterine insemination</a>&nbsp;that his wife, Gwen, received.

“I think they’re probably far more concerned with that than my wife and I used IUI to have our child and that Donald Trump would restrict that," Walz said. "So I think folks know who I am.”

Bream noted that Trump has come out in support of fertility treatments, even as he has said that abortion questions should be decided by states.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man jailed following an Amber Alert in September is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Monday.&nbsp;

 Trevawn Strong, 30 of Wichita, has been charged with abuse of a child, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of aggravated endangering a child, three counts of criminal threat, and misdemeanor counts of domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal damage to property, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 5 p.m. September 11, 5-year-old Trevawn Strong Jr. was forcibly taken from his mother by his father 30-year-old Trevawn Strong Sr. utilizing a knife and firearm during a domestic incident at their residence at 2025 S. Grove in Wichita, according to police.

&nbsp;Strong&nbsp; threatened to kill his son, stabbed the boy's mother, and took the child.&nbsp; The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported the boy was in imminent danger. The suspect left in a vehicle, but that vehicle was recovered in the 1900 block of N. Woodlawn in Wichita.&nbsp;

Just before 9p.m. police located the child and took the father into custody. 

Strong's next court appearance is scheduled for October 7. He is free on a $250,000 bond with conditions including electronic monitoring with pre-trial services.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WASHINGTON —The United States will provide nearly $157 million in new U.S. humanitarian&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;to support populations affected by conflict in Lebanon and the region, according to a statement from the U..S Department of State.

&nbsp;This funding will address new and existing needs of internally displaced persons and refugee populations inside Lebanon and the communities that host them.&nbsp; The assistance will also support those fleeing to neighboring Syria.&nbsp;

This life-saving assistance from the American people includes nearly $82 million immediately available through the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and $75 million through the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.&nbsp; 

Of this total, USAID has already deployed $11.5 million, and working with Congress plans to make another $63.5 million available in the coming weeks, to ensure that vital humanitarian assistance can continue to reach the most vulnerable communities in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;This&nbsp;emergency food, shelter, blankets, hygiene kits, protection, water, and sanitation assistance will be a critical lifeline for those who have endured unimaginable hardships.

The United States provided nearly $386 million over the last year to support vulnerable populations in Lebanon and Syria impacted by the increase in conflict.&nbsp; This new humanitarian assistance comes at a time of devastating humanitarian crisis for Lebanon, with more than a million people displaced from their homes. &nbsp;The United States is committed to helping those most vulnerable in Lebanon and throughout the region. &nbsp;We&nbsp;urge other donors to join us in stepping up to contribute to these new humanitarian needs.

&nbsp;Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite. The meeting will take place on October 29 at 11:00 AM at the current office location, downstairs at 122 E. 12th St., Hays, KS 67601 (please note, this is not the new Centennial location).

"Our team is eagerly anticipating the completion of our new facility this fall," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. "While we don't have an exact opening date yet due to ongoing construction, our contractors are working hard to get everything finished up within the next several weeks. We're confident and excited to welcome our wonderful community members who want to join us in this mission of serving Hays and the surrounding area."

The new thrift store will be open to the public, accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous goods. The organization anticipates being able to start accepting donations in late November or early December.
