Lyle William Neville, 83, peacefully passed away at his home in 
Chandler, Arizona, on August 5, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. 
He was born on June 20, 1937, on the Neville homestead farm, in 
Benkleman Township, Cheyenne County, 18 miles southwest of St. Francis, 
Kansas; one of eight children born at this farm site to Monta Alice 
(Thompson) and George Neville.&nbsp; Lyle was the last surviving member of 
his prairie farming family.

While his family mourns the passing of their patriarch, his friends, 
former students and so many others mourn the loss of an irreplaceable 
man. Lyle was very special; a kind, humble and gracious person, with a 
natural ability to make everything better.&nbsp; Lyle was a stranger to no 
one, a trusted friend to everyone and was loved by all who knew him. His
 generosity of his time, attention and sincere interest in others was 
immense.

After eight years of elementary school at rural school district #9 
(referred to as “Neville School”, where his mother taught school, and 
named in honor of his fraternal grandfather, who had donated a plot from
 his homestead ¼ section of land), Lyle graduated from Cheyenne 
Community High School in St. Francis, in 1955.&nbsp; He was President and 
Salutatorian of his Senior Class, member of the National Honor Society, 
1st Team center of the All Northwest Kansas Football team, Co-Captain of
 wrestling and football and Homecoming King.&nbsp; He graduated from the 
University of Colorado in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 
Secondary Education, Deans Honor List.&nbsp; In pursuit of his continuing 
education over the next 40 years, Lyle also attended the University of 
Kansas, Wichita State University, Kansas State University (Hays), and 
Western State College (Gunnison, CO).

On July 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Lou Coons, 
in Goodland, Kansas. Last month they celebrated their 59th wedding 
anniversary.&nbsp; A testament to Lyle and Bonnie’s lifelong love for each 
other was their amazing relationship formed and maintained with family 
and so many wonderful friends.

Lyle was a championship high school and college wrestler.&nbsp; As a high 
school wrestler at St. Francis, Lyle was special; he was one of Kansas’ 
first 3-time Kansas State Wrestling Champions (1953, 1954 &amp; 1955), 
he placed 3rd in State his freshman year (1952).&nbsp; Lyle and his high 
school teammates won four consecutive Kansas State Team Championships, 
under two legendary coaches (a total of six consecutive years, 1951 
through 1956).&nbsp; In addition to wrestling, Lyle was a 3-year football 
letterman and four-year letterman in track, where he ran the middle 
distances, relays and threw the javelin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At the University of Colorado, he continued his storied wrestling 
career as a collegiate three-year letterman (freshmen were not eligible 
to participate at the varsity level).&nbsp; He was Big-7 Conference Champion 
at 137 lbs. in 1957, and took 4th Place in Big-8 tournament in 1959.&nbsp; 
While team leader at CU, Lyle competed in the NCAA Championship 
Tournament in 1957 and 1959.&nbsp; His amateur freestyle career was 
highlighted as Champion of AAU Rocky Mountain Tournament in 1956 and 
Runner-Up in 1958.&nbsp; He was Champion at the 1956 U.S. Olympic, Rocky 
Mountain District Tournament in Sterling, Colorado, where he was awarded
 tournament trophy for quickest pin in 13 seconds.&nbsp; He went on that 
summer to compete in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman in the 1956 U.S. 
Olympic National Finals in Los Angeles, California.

For 35 years, Lyle excelled in his high school coaching and teaching 
career.&nbsp; He was beloved and honored by thousands of former athletes and 
students.&nbsp; He always led by example and was such a great mentor to all.&nbsp;
 Out of college in 1959, Lyle was hired as a P.E. teacher, varsity 
wrestling coach and assistant coach in football and track in Sterling, 
Colorado.&nbsp; The following year he began a 10-year reign (1960 – 1970), as
 the head wrestling coach at Colby High School in Colby, the center 
hotbed of northwest Kansas wrestling.&nbsp; While at Colby, Lyle coached 12 
Kansas State Champs and 20 other wrestlers to 2nd through 4th Place 
finishes.&nbsp; In addition to his primary duties as a P.E. and social 
studies teacher, he also assisted coaching in football and track.

In 1970, Lyle moved his young family to Hutchinson, Kansas, to accept
 the varsity wrestling coaching position at Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; 
While at the helm, he led his championship team for 24 seasons 
(1970-1994). Under his leadership, HHS won two Kansas Wrestling team 
titles in 1973 (5A) and 1981 (6A).&nbsp; His teams had 21 years in Top-10 
Kansas State finishes in 34 seasons.&nbsp; In addition to the two team titles
 at HHS, his teams (Hutchinson and Colby combined) accomplished 2nd 
Place (three times – 1963, 1980 &amp; 1982), 3rd Place (four times – 
1966, 1974, 1979, 1983), 4th or 5th Place (four times), 6th – 10th 
&nbsp;Place (eight times).&nbsp;&nbsp; During his long tenure of employment with 
Hutchinson Public Schools (U.S.D. 308), Lyle also assisted in coaching 
football and track, and was in charge of the District’s Driver Education
 program for decades.&nbsp; The family often heard stories and memories of 
the young people of Hutchinson, learning how to drive in this 
well-attended summer program from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

Lyle was inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall 
of Fame in 1995 and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Lifetime 
Service to Wrestling Award), in 2004.&nbsp; Kansas Wrestling Coaches 
Association honored him as “Coach of the Year” in three different 
decades (1978, 1981 and 1993).&nbsp; He was elected two times as President of
 Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, two times, Secretary-Treasurer, 
and was a charter member.&nbsp;

Titles (25 times), including his oldest son, Brad, in 1980 and his

Wrestling was always a family affair for the Nevilles.

Lyle was also a huge force in establishing the Kansas Youth 
Wrestling.&nbsp; In 1971, Bill Carroll, the Executive Director of the 
Hutchinson YMCA, approached him to start a kids’ program.&nbsp; The first 
season, 15 boys joined the Hutchinson Youth team and they participated 
in three tournaments--Andale, Colwich, and Douglass.&nbsp; The team grew 
immensely over the next few years as the entire youth wrestling movement
 took off in Kansas.&nbsp; By the third season, the Hutchinson Youth 
Wrestling Team grew to 70 boys.&nbsp; Lyle started the first Hutchinson Youth
 Wrestling Tournament.&nbsp; The first tournament was held in 1975, with 
about 300 participants. The next year, the tournament was moved from HHS
 to the Hutchinson Sports Arena and drew nearly 600 participants as more
 and more communities had started youth wrestling programs. The 
Hutchinson YMCA Invitational Tournament continued to grow in size and 
many years it exceeded 1,000 youth wrestlers in a one-day tournament.&nbsp; 
Lyle was involved in coaching the YMCA program until 1981. Many 
outstanding volunteers helped and assisted him in youth coaching and 
with his tournament efforts over the years, including many of his 
varsity wrestlers and assistant coaches: Gary Travis, Dan Powers, Mike 
Juby, Mark and David Sandoval, Jim Coons, Tom Coons, Brad Neville, Mike 
Vierya, Bob Mauck, Mike Baker, Mike Garcia, and many others, maintaining
 sound coaching staff and fundamentals working with the youth of 
Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp; It was this spark of exposure to the sport of wrestling 
that Lyle created which captivated many young boys over the years, 
inspiring them to practice and compete in an individual sport for the 
first time, and to come to know and understand the highs and lows of 
individual athletic competition.&nbsp; For most, this simple rigor and 
self-awareness helped to develop them into the men that they would 
become.&nbsp;

Lyle retired from coaching in 1994.&nbsp; After retirement, Lyle worked 
for 10 years (2005-2015), cutting fairways and greeting patrons at 
Cottonwood Hills Golf Course in Reno County, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a huge part
 of the award-winning course and was extremely proud and fond of his 
time spent out of doors on this uniquely beautiful golf project nestled 
in one the best natural settings in central Kansas.

Lyle’s greatest of all accomplishments were his family, whom he and 
Bonnie nurtured, provided for, educated and supported in every way, and 
the lifelong personal relationships he formed throughout his life.&nbsp; His 
time at Cottonwood Hills was also one of his proudest accomplishments – 
in many respects, it may have been his favorite dream come true.

Lyle is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Bonnie of Chandler, AZ; his three 
sons, Brad (Dena) of Hutchinson, KS, Lane (Kristin) of Scottsdale, AZ, 
Morgan (Sandra) of Chandler, AZ; and daughter, Monee of Chandler, AZ; 
nine grandchildren (each of whom developed and shared a unique bond with
 their ‘grandad’ or ‘papa’), Cole, Anna, Dalton, Elle, Ayla, Mia, Skye, 
Eden and Isaac; brother-in-law, Tom Coons (Kathy) of Chandler, AZ; and 
eight nephews and nine nieces.&nbsp; He will always be missed and never 
forgotten.&nbsp; The world lost a great man.

I heard a statement a few months ago that has really stuck with me and it describes my work in Extension, and especially 4-H, very well.

“It is important to balance the Jetsons and the Flintstones” – to me, this is about continuing to learn and provide up-to-date research-based information while being respectful of the foundations and history of 4-H. This can be complicated when I hear from community members or 4-H alumni who say “that isn’t the way we did 4-H when I was a kid”.&nbsp;

The fair is often an event that I hear “just isn’t the same” and that can come from many perspectives. I grew up with a small, county fair and I’ve worked with small, county fairs as well as larger fairs with many activities. Both have merit as community events but my focus will always be providing opportunities for 4-H members to share project learning with the community (that is really what a fair exhibit is!), receive feedback from a judge, and practice communication skills. These skills along with community service, leadership, and teamwork are truly the foundations of 4-H.&nbsp;

Yes – some of the projects and activities may look different as 4-H continues to look for avenues to provide youth with life skills as well career and job preparation and opportunities.

One of the neat opportunities that some 4-H Alumni have is to look at a career in Extension. We are fortunate to have a summer intern, Tamara Robertson, who grew up in 4-H in Ford County. She served as a camp counselor for several years, worked at Rock Springs Ranch for 4-H Camp a couple of years ago and will graduate from FHSU this year with aspirations of working in Extension. When you see Tamara at events and the fair, be sure to give her a warm Barton County welcome!

We invite the community to come out to the fair July 7-11 to check out 4-H members’ work and the other events and activities that the Barton County Fair Association have put together to celebrate our heritage in agriculture and our Barton County Communities!

&nbsp;The theme for the fair this year is “A New Beginning” which is a nod to the history of our area and celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail while looking forward as the fair adjusts and adds a fresh perspective to the events. Sounds like a balance of the Flintstones and Jetsons to me!

BERAN: Balancing the Jetsons and the Flintstones

	When is the last time the man in your household had a medical check-up? Men visit their physicians less often than women, and tend to wait longer before having problems treated. What these facts suggest is that men don't pay attention to, or take care of, their health as well as women.&nbsp;

	We will be celebrating Father’s Day soon and someone conveniently decided June is also Men’s Health month! Even though Father’s Day is a week away let’s take a look at some of the facts behind men's health:&nbsp;

*cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death;&nbsp;

*high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels affect cardiovascular health;&nbsp;

*diabetes incidence is on the rise-- many don't realize they have the condition;&nbsp;

UNRUH: Concerns with men’s health

On a hot summer day, people often dress in light clothing, drink more water than normal and seek shade to minimize the impacts on the body from heat and humidity. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute experts said cattle need many of those same strategies for maximum performance over the summer. Talking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2021/05/28/feed-efficiency-feet-and-leg-scores-heat-stress/" target="_blank">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, veterinarians Bob Larson, Brian Lubbers and Brad White; and nutritionist Phillip Lancaster agreed that providing plenty of water and shade are two keys to success in keeping cattle comfortable. &nbsp;&nbsp;

But first it is important to recognize the signs of stress, Lubbers said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Cattle that are experiencing heat stress will have decreased production, so it is important to know the signs, which often mimic respiratory disease,” he said. Cattle that are breathing rapidly might be experiencing heat stress.&nbsp;&nbsp;

White said sometimes it is difficult to detect: “If you see one animal breathing hard in the heat often there is another set of calves that are also experiencing heat stress but not showing the signs to the same degree as the one you noticed.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

Larson added that oftentimes it is the young calves that are most impacted by the heat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Very young calves seem to be more sensitive to the heat when compared to their older herd mates,” he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Along with noting the daytime high temperatures, Lubbers said producers need to monitor the nighttime low temperatures as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“If it doesn’t cool down overnight, the cattle can’t dissipate the heat like they would otherwise, so those are the days that you need to be extra vigilant in watching for signs of heat stress,” Lubbers said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Relating to cattle performance, Jennifer Bormann, beef cattle geneticist with the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at K-State, said research has shown cattle that readily shed their haircoat in hot temperatures perform better. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“One study scored the cattle at the same time each spring and then tracked their performance. Cattle that shed their haircoats early produced calves with higher weaning weights than the cows that took longer to shed their winter haircoats,” Bormann said. “The theory is that those early shedding cows suffered less heat stress and greater performance in the summer months than the others in the study.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Along with a slick haircoat, Lancaster said it is important to offer cattle extra water on the hot days.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Check the watering systems often because on the really hot days they may not be able to keep up with the demands for water that the cattle are placing on them,” Lancaster said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

And regarding shade, Lancaster offered this advice: “Whether it is a tree in the pasture or an artificial shade, it is important to confirm it is big enough to allow good airflow moving underneath the shade.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

White added: “If there are 30 cows all grouped in close sitting under the shade tree, they will not be that much cooler than if they were all sitting out in the sun because of the lack of air movement.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Cattle need water, shade in extreme temperatures

Another school year has come to an end but that does not mean that a family schedule is impossible. Yes, it will be important to give your kids some down time in between their ball practices or swimming lessons. But do make an effort to limit screen time either in front of the TV or any of the other electronic devices that many children are literally glued to.&nbsp;

A Facebook friend of mine posted a neat suggestion for families titled, “School Holiday Rules.” I have shared the information with parents who have appreciated having something that can be printed off and followed.&nbsp; While it does require a parent to help enforce the rules, I love the concept. So here goes with some suggested “School Holiday Rules.”

Children may have as much time on the iPad or TV as long as all of the following jobs have been completed BEFORE they turn on the screen.

The way I have it figured, a child who completes this list will have spent at least 3 and a half hours in productive and perhaps creative activity. They may find that the book they are reading is so enticing that they can’t put it down, or that their outdoor activity they have chosen is great fun.&nbsp;

It takes me back to my own childhood when our summer schedule looked quite similar. But it would have included at least one hour of work in the garden and when I was old enough a three-hour block to mow the grass when needed. Of course, there were 4-H projects to work on and occasionally driving the tractor to pick up hay bales.&nbsp;

I will post the rules on our Cottonwood Extension District website. I printed the “School Holiday Rules” on hot pink paper so they will really stand out on the refrigerator or bathroom mirror. If you decide to adopt these rules in your household let me know how it goes. And have a great summer!

KRUG: Summer rules for kids

One of the things I love most about my Extension career is that every day is just a little bit different. Like this past Tuesday, when my day started before 8 with a quick trip to the grocery store to get supplies for a program later in the day. My normal mode of transportation, (bicycle) had to be replaced by our van thanks to early morning showers. But our timing was perfect. As my husband and I were leaving the store, I spotted a cross country cyclist pulling in under the entryway.&nbsp; I smiled and said “Welcome to Kansas.”&nbsp;

For the next 20 minutes we enjoyed learning about our new friends’ cross-country trek that started in Lander, WY, 12 days earlier. Over the course of the next 10 weeks Mike’s plan is to travel east to Richmond, VA, then fly to the west coast and cycle home to Wyoming. We noticed his bike was loaded with camping gear, so we asked where had spent the night. With his late arrival and ensuing storms, he opted for a motel.&nbsp;

If you have traveled along highway 96 you may have noticed the cycling signs which designate we are on the trans-America bike trail. It is exciting for our community of Great Bend to be included on this route. With cycling season upon us, we are sure to see more cross-country cyclists, looking to re-stock their supplies, and get a good night’s rest. Mike was looking forward to buying some fresh veggies and needed some new tubes for his bike tires from our Golden Belt Bicycle shop. He commented how hard it was to find fresh produce early on his trip and how many stickers he encountered in western Kansas!

My husband, John, and I, are active participants on the Be Well Barton County task force. One of our projects has been to develop a campground for cross-country cyclists in the grassy area behind Central Baptist Church. The church installed a bicycle repair station several years ago. Small grants from our Central KS Partnership have been used to repair two picnic tables and provide electrical outlets for cyclists to charge their phones. A kiosk will be added soon that will provide contact information in case of an emergency and a map of services our community offers the cyclists.&nbsp;

We want everyone who visits our communities, to have a positive experience. Each one of us has an opportunity to become engaged in our community and promote the great place we have to live, work and raise a family.&nbsp;

KRUG: Are you engaged in your community?

In the last three to five years now, there have been problems with chinch bugs coming out of mature wheat fields and feeding on the small grain sorghum and forage sorghum plants after wheat harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The overwintered adults emerge in early spring and fly into small grains where they mate and produce the first generation. Most problems in milo or feed occur when large groups of the immature, wingless nymphs migrate from maturing wheat fields and invade adjacent sorghum or sorghum/sudan hay fields where they attempt to complete development. They typically do not infest the entire field but can take out several rows of milo next to the wheat. &nbsp;

Problems with this insect were historically confined to eastern and central Kansas, with damage beginning in May or June, but in recent years, chinch bugs have become more of a problem further west in the state.&nbsp;

Chinch bugs puncture vascular tissues to extract plant juices and secrete digestive enzymes that cause the breakdown of surrounding plant tissues. Feeding punctures also can allow pathogens to enter the plant.&nbsp; Consequently, damaged plants present a variety of symptoms including stunting, yellowing, wilting, and necrotic lesions. The effect nymphal feeding has on plants depends to a large degree on the size, health and nutritional status of the plants. Growth stage and water balance are critical because small or drought-stressed plants have less ability to tolerate or recover from chinch bug feeding damage.&nbsp;

Using seed treatments: clothianidin (Poncho), imidacloprid (numerous products) and thiamethoxam (Cruiser) at planting can potentially decrease chinch bug damage and may protect plants for up to 3 weeks, unless the migration is heavy. Growers can use follow-up sprays on border rows if protection wears off before the end of chinch bug migration.&nbsp;

Most often the damage is noticed only after several rows of sorghum or feed have been severely stunted or killed. Ideally treating promptly as migrations begin and before significant numbers of bugs enter the field and small plants are affected is best.

An insecticide spray can be used over the affected rows and approximately an additional 100 feet beyond. Also, spraying about 100 feet into the wheat stubble is advisable if chinch bugs are still coming out of the wheat field.

Most currently approved insecticides have good efficacy against chinch bugs, if three factors are considered. First, it is important to use the full recommended rate of the selected insecticide, preferably applied in 20 to 40 gallons of water per acre. High gallonage ensures good plant coverage and enhances the movement of material into protected plant parts such as leaf sheaths, which increases the probability of contact with bugs. Second, the material should be applied with properly adjusted and calibrated equipment. Cone nozzles designed for high-pressure use will create smaller droplets and improve coverage. Third, the timing of the insecticide application is critical. Early morning applications are preferred because winds are calm (reducing drift), temperatures are cool (reducing volatilization of chemicals), and a large proportion of the chinch bug population will be on the plants and exposed to the application. None of the materials currently registered for use against chinch bugs has long residual efficacy and plants can outgrow the protection. Because peak migrations may continue for 10 days or more, monitoring is required to determine if additional applications to border rows are necessary.&nbsp;

Growers can use follow-up sprays on border rows if protection wears off before the end of chinch bug migration.&nbsp;Most often the damage is noticed only after several rows of sorghum or feed have been severely stunted or killed. Ideally treating promptly as migrations begin and before significant numbers of bugs enter the field and small plants are affected is best.An insecticide spray can be used over the affected rows and approximately an additional 100 feet beyond. Also, spraying about 100 feet into the wheat stubble is advisable if chinch bugs are still coming out of the wheat field.Most currently approved insecticides have good efficacy against chinch bugs, if three factors are considered. First, it is important to use the full recommended rate of the selected insecticide, preferably applied in 20 to 40 gallons of water per acre. High gallonage ensures good plant coverage and enhances the movement of material into protected plant parts such as leaf sheaths, which increases the probability of contact with bugs. Second, the material should be applied with properly adjusted and calibrated equipment. Cone nozzles designed for high-pressure use will create smaller droplets and improve coverage. Third, the timing of the insecticide application is critical. Early morning applications are preferred because winds are calm (reducing drift), temperatures are cool (reducing volatilization of chemicals), and a large proportion of the chinch bug population will be on the plants and exposed to the application. None of the materials currently registered for use against chinch bugs has long residual efficacy and plants can outgrow the protection. and while there were a number of candidates who filed for several positions, there was still not enough interest to force an August primary election.

To force a primary election, there has to be triple the
number of candidates file for the number of open seats, plus one. 

With three positions up for election on the Ellis and
Victoria city councils, Hays City Commission, the Victoria, Ellis and Hays
school boards, and the Big Creek, Munjor, Prairie Acres and Suburban Estates
Improvement Districts, there would need to be 10 candidates file in each race to

Races set for Ellis County city, school board election

Many people mistake little barley (Hordeum pusillum) for a little foxtail because the foxtail and little barley seedheads are similar. However, little barley is a winter annual that comes up in late September - October and spends the winter as a small plant. It thrives in the cooler spring temperatures, forms seed heads, and dies out usually by July. Foxtail, on the other hand, is a summer annual that does well in hot weather. Also, foxtail will not produce seedheads until mid-to late-summer. So, why are we talking about little barley now? Because now is NOT the time to control it unless it is in an area where a non-selective herbicide that kills everything such as glyphosate (Roundup) can be used. The best control for little barley in turf is a thick lawn that is mowed high enough that sunlight does not hit the soil. Little barley seed will not germinate in such conditions. Overseeding in early September can thicken up a tall fescue lawn and prevent a little barley infestation. However, if you do not plan to overseed even though the lawn is a bit thin, preemergence herbicides can be used to provide at least partial control of this weed. The only preemergence herbicide that I know is labeled specifically for little barley is&nbsp; Weed Impede by Monterey Lawn and Garden. Weed Impede can only be used on warm-season grasses (bermudagrass, buffalograss, zoysiagrass) and tall fescue that is grown in warm-season areas such as Kansas. However, Dimension (dithiopyr) a pre-emergent, is labeled for barley (Herodium spp.) which would include little barley and therefore can be used to keep this weed under control. Because little barley is a winter annual, apply the preemergence herbicide about mid-September and water in to activate. If overseeding, do not apply any preemergence herbicide as it will interfere with the germination of tall fescue. FICK: Little barley in lawns 


 Summer is almost here and that means kids will be eating more meals and
 snacks at home. Keeping those meals and snacks healthy over the summer 
can be easy with a little planning. Following the MyPlate food guide 
system for healthy eating reminds us that half of your plate should be 
filled with fruits and vegetables. A generous portion of whole grains 
and a small portion of lean protein, plus a calcium rich food choice, 
round out the healthy plate. 

 When my kids were growing up and 
now when we spend time with our grandkids, it makes me smile when I see 
their eagerness with eating fresh fruit and vegetables. I often hear 
mom’s say that their kids hate vegetables. My answer to them is “Do your
 kids really hate vegetables, or have you given them a chance to love 
them?”  In the curriculum, Food is Elementary, by Dr. Antonia Demas, 
students are allowed to first smell the food and then slowly taste new 
whole foods. When kids are involved in selecting and preparing 
vegetables they are more likely to eat them. Try preparing vegetables in
 a variety of ways, from raw, to lightly steamed, to stir fried. 
Children follow adult examples, so make sure they see you enjoying your 
veggies too. 

The task of eating more fresh vegetables and fruits 
is easier when you keep a good supply of choices on hand. Soon our 
farmers markets will be open with some great choices of locally grown 
produce. Late cold weather pushed back the planting of many gardens but 
hopefully now that it has warmed up you are still thinking about 
planting something. Research shows that when kids learn about vegetables
 and fruits by growing them, they are more likely to eat them. 

Take
 time now that school is winding down, to sit down with your kids and 
get them involved in meal planning. Make a deal with them to try one new
 vegetable every week of the summer and you will expand their healthy 
plate. As the kids get older you can offer age appropriate chores 
related to meal preparation and serving. Giving children choices when it
 comes to what is served gives them a sense of ownership. If a new food 
is not liked the first time it is offered, wait a couple of weeks and 
try again with the food prepared in a different way.

KRUG: Kids and vegetables

June is the time to fertilize warm-season lawn grasses such as bermudagrass, buffalograss, and zoysiagrass. These species all thrive in warmer summer weather, so this is the time they respond best to fertilization. The most important nutrient is nitrogen (N), and these three species need it in varying amounts. Bermudagrass requires the most nitrogen. High-quality Bermuda stands need about 4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season (low maintenance areas can get by on 2 lbs.). Apply this as four separate applications, about 4 weeks apart, of 1 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. starting in early May. It is already too late for the May application, but the June application is just around the corner. The nitrogen can come from either a quick- or slow-release source. So any lawn fertilizer will work.

Plan the last application no later than August 15. This helps ensure the bermudagrass is not overstimulated, making it susceptible to winter kill. Zoysiagrass grows more slowly than bermudagrass and is prone to develop thatch. &nbsp;Consequently, it does not need as much nitrogen. In fact, too much is worse than too little. One and one-half to 2 pounds N per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season is sufficient. Split the total in two and apply once in early June and again around mid-July.

Slow-release nitrogen is preferable but quick-release is acceptable. Slow-release nitrogen is sometimes listed as “slowly available” or “water insoluble.”​Buffalograss requires the least nitrogen of all lawn species commonly grown in Kansas. It will survive and persist with no supplemental nitrogen but giving it one lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. will improve color and density. 

This application should be made in early June. For a little darker color, fertilize it as described for zoysiagrass in the previous paragraph, but do not apply more than a total of 2 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. in one season. &nbsp;As with zoysia, slow-release nitrogen is preferable, but fast-release is also OK. As for all turfgrasses, phosphorus and potassium are best applied according to soil test results because many soils already have adequate amounts of these nutrients for turfgrass growth. They’re tiny and slow moving, and this spring’s cool, humid weather across the central Plains has been to their liking, so anyone spending time outdoors needs to be on the lookout for ticks.&nbsp;

The wingless parasites, which feed exclusively on human and animal blood, can carry dangerous microbial pathogens and are difficult to control for several reasons.&nbsp;

They make babies – a lot of them. After mating, the adult female American dog tick feeds on her human or animal host until engorged, then drops off and deposits eggs in the environment. She dies after she deposits her eggs, but those egg masses typically number in the thousands from just one female. Males feed sparingly and do not engorge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are multiple tick species, and they can live up to two years, plus they can feed on numerous wildlife or human hosts.&nbsp;

Ticks are most commonly found just a few inches or feet off the ground on vegetation and typically ambush their human or animal “hosts,” as they look for a meal by crawling onto grass, weeds, or low bushes and waiting for a host to brush against the vegetation. They then move onto the host to look for a site to attach and feed. Ticks do not jump or drop from trees, Whitworth said.&nbsp;

If not engorged, American dog ticks are typically only about one-eighth of an inch long. If engorged, they increase in size up to three-quarters of an inch.&nbsp;

To protect against ticks, avoid going into tall grass, weeds and brushy areas, Whitworth said. For those who do go into such areas, light-colored clothing can help you see ticks before they reach the skin. Repellents based on DEET (N,N diethyl-meta-toluamide) and permethrin work well in keeping ticks and mosquitoes away. Permethrin-based repellents must not be applied directly to skin.&nbsp;

After coming home from potentially tick-infested areas, inspect your skin, and remove ticks immediately. Ticks removed within several hours after attachment are unlikely to transmit pathogens.&nbsp;

If a tick has already attached itself, remove it manually by grasping as close to the skin as possible with forceps or tweezers, and pull straight away from the skin, using slow, steady pressure. The tick should not be twisted or jerked out, as that increases the chance for its head to be left in the skin. Do not use a lighted match or cover the tick in petroleum jelly or nail polish.&nbsp;

Ticks removed from people should be saved in a vial with alcohol and labeled with the date. If flu-like symptoms, such as headache, skin rash and fever occur 10 to 14 days after the tick’s removal, see a physician immediately, and take the tick with you. If in Kansas, send it to the local K-State Research and Extension office.&nbsp;

Chemical pesticides targeting ticks and mites are called acaricides. They should be used only in areas with chronic tick problems.&nbsp;

Repellents based on DEET (N,N diethyl-meta-toluamide) and permethrin work well in keeping ticks and mosquitoes away. Permethrin-based repellents must not be applied directly to skin.&nbsp;After coming home from potentially tick-infested areas, inspect your skin, and remove ticks immediately. Ticks removed within several hours after attachment are unlikely to transmit pathogens.&nbsp;If a tick has already attached itself, remove it manually by grasping as close to the skin as possible with forceps or tweezers, and pull straight away from the skin, using slow, steady pressure. The tick should not be twisted or jerked out, as that increases the chance for its head to be left in the skin. Do not use a lighted match or cover the tick in petroleum jelly or nail polish.&nbsp;Ticks removed from people should be saved in a vial with alcohol and labeled with the date. If flu-like symptoms, such as headache, skin rash and fever occur 10 to 14 days after the tick’s removal, see a physician immediately, and take the tick with you. If in Kansas, send it to the local K-State Research and Extension office.&nbsp;Chemical pesticides targeting ticks and mites are called acaricides. BOOR: Be on the lookout for ticks

Supporting the healthy development of the young child’s brain is both a tremendous opportunity and an awesome responsibility. Children birth to age 3 and their parents are invited to Brainy Babies at the Hays Public Library on Tuesdays June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 6 pm each evening.&nbsp;

The interactive series encourages and stimulates learning while enhancing the relationship between adult and child. A very short program will include what adults can do to support brain development and how play builds connections in the brain. The remainder of the time is for interaction between children and parents.&nbsp;

	There are many things that can be done to support a child’s healthy brain development, beginning before birth and continuing until the child is an adult. Parents, grandparents and other adults play a very important role in helping ensure healthy brain development.

The developing brain needs two basics: safety and positive experiences. Parents who want to support their babies’ brain development should remember these two rules. Number one is to create a safe environment. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure the baby is safe and not under stress. Consistency is key. If there is a predictable schedule, the baby will know there is someone there for them and they will feel safe.&nbsp;

The second basic need is positive, enriching experiences. The brain learns best when it is challenged with new information and then relates the new information to what the child already knows. Exposing your baby to new things helps the brain strengthen old connections and make new ones.

Simple things such as talking to your baby and interacting face-to-face builds the brain connections needed for both language skills and a healthy emotional bond. Read to your baby beginning at birth. Hearing adults read helps the brain develop language connections. It also gives parents and babies a chance to spend time together.&nbsp;

UNRUH: Brainy babies

The deadline for candidates to file for this year’s city and
school board election is quickly approaching.

There are a number of positions up for election later this
year but only a handful of candidates have filed the paperwork and paid the $20
fee with the county election office.

The candidate filing deadline is noon on June 1. The primary
election is set for Aug. 3 with the general election Nov. 2.

There are three seats up for election on the Hays City
Commission. Two of the positions are four-year terms and one two-year term.

As of Wednesday morning, only three candidates had filed for
Hays City Commission — incumbent Shaun Musil, along with Samuel Allen
and Reese Barrick.

Three positions are up for election on the Ellis City
Council. Three people have filed so far. Those candidates are incumbents John Walz,
Tricia Pritchett and Devin Henderson.

There are five positions up for election on the Schoenchen
City Council. The two candidates that have filed for far are incumbents Kyle
Zimmerman and Federick Follmer.

Three positions are up for election on the Victoria City
County. Incumbent Harland Rupp is the only candidate that has filed at this
time.

The Hays USD 489 school board has three are large positions
up for election this far. Two people have filed so far. Those candidates are Casey
Herrman and Thomas Wasinger.

Ellis USD 388 also has three at large positions up for
election but as a Wednesday morning no candidates have filed for the positions.

Ellis incumbent Mayor David McDaniel is the only candidate
for file for the position.

Victoria Mayor John Schulte has filed for re-election and is
the only candidate to file so far.

Ellis City Treasurer Faith Scheck is the only candidate who has filed for the position.

In Schoechen, Kevin Bieker is the only candidate who has
filed for Mayor.

There are two board positions up for election on the Cottonwood
Extension District. Kathleen Huser and Donna Maskus have filed for those two
spots.

There are also three director positions available on each
the Big Creek, Munjor, Prairie Acres and Suburban Estates Improvement
Districts.

Casey Herrman and Duane Kuhn have filed for the Big Creek
Improvement District.

🎙Post Podcast: Stay safe this summer with these mosquito and tick prevention tips

In an effort to bring project-based activities to area youth, K-State Research and Extension has launched the Kansas Clover Classroom, providing a resource for parents and youth leaders to present fun science lessons to area children.

“It’s something we’re really excited about,” said Susan
Schlichting, 4-H Youth Development agent with the Cottonwood Extension
District. “We have been locked down for the last year of life and we put our
energies toward creating some new resources that kids and families can download
for free from the Kansas 4-H website to help them learn some new things in our
4-H traditional way of hands of learning.”

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/resources/cloverclassroom.html">The first set of eight project challenges is currently
available now</a>&nbsp;on the Kansas 4-H website.

The challenges are laid out on 8-by-11 pages that outline the hands-on activities including resources and hints about the individual projects.

“Things like geology, photography, bread baking, gardening,
building a pollinator garden are some of the things already in the classroom,” Schlichting said.

reflecting 4-H project areas.“It’s a great tool that you can have access to anytime day or night and explore those project areas,” Schlichting said.Each project contains everything needed for the individual
challenges, including links to further information.And the challenges are also designed to use materials commonly
found in the home.“The online resources and virtual 4-H meeting zooms have enhanced my ability to provide them with bigger city options and help me with resources on things I am not an expert in," said Christina Frick, who has three children involved with the Pawnee County 4-H."I think all these resources are great," she said. (It lets children) "use their imagination and creativity to explore.”&nbsp;Frick also said the program has encouraged her children to be active while learning."The kids love to go explore the pastures," she said. "We have done metal detecting in our pastures and they always are on the lookout for drop antlers in the pasture and trees. The day that photo (above) was taken they went exploring and brought back many treasures. ... Many 4-H projects relate to each other so when we do a project it applies to many other projects."&nbsp;While the classroom is online and can be completed with parents in the home, Schlichting said there are also opportunities
to use the challenges in a group setting or for others that want to have an engaging experience with a child.“Maybe grandma wants to teach their grandchild how to bake
bread,” Schlichting said. “Here is a great little tool to help them get started
and some hints on how to approach that with their grandchild.”She said the projects could also be used in a school
setting, or among 4-H clubs.“It could be done as a group effort,” Schlichting said. “But
it could also be an individual child.”The programs are designed to work for students at a variety of ages and educational levels.“Some of them are set up differently; some of them are very
focused on beginner level,” Schlichting said. Others she said include more advanced concepts.“There are things like the bread-making challenge actually
has three different levels of challenge within one project challenge sheet,”
Schlichting said.“Each one of them has a little bit different twist,” she
said. “You will want to explore them and see what fits well for you.”The Clover Classroom was developed as a collaborative effort with extension agents across the state.With the Extension being a part of
Kansas State University, Schlichting said everything is based on research and relays science-based activities in a fun and engaging way.“It may not seem like science, but there is science behind
everything we are doing,” Schlichting said. “There are a lot of different avenues you can pursue with
this, and we think it is a really fun resource and hope that families will take
