Delores (Dee) Diane Mongeau was born at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS on October 28, 1956. She passed away on September 9, 2024 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska surrounded by her loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Dee graduated from Logan High School and went on to further her education at Colby Community College. She took some additional courses, online, later in life.

Wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend. These are many of the titles Dee carried with her throughout her life. Not only was she a mother to her children, she was also a foster mother to several and a mother figure to many of her children’s friends.

Dee met the love of her life, Bert, at a singles dance held at the American Legion in Agra, KS in 1986. They were united in marriage on January 30, 1988 at the Catholic Church in Phillipsburg, KS.

Dee spent a majority of her working life in accounting and inventory for oil and gas companies, with the last several years doing accounting work for the family’s company, B&amp;B Redimix. She loved to travel around to her children’s activities; she was their biggest cheerleader. Being a grandmother was something she adored.

Dee was a lover with a big, giving heart. She wore her heart on her sleeve and loved her family and friends endlessly. She was always just a phone call away and was happy to lend a listening ear. She also loved animals, including her most recent pets: her dog, Cookie, and her cats Uno, Blue, and Tabby. Her care also extended to numerous farm and sick animals she would nurture back to health. Dee’s hobbies included reading, knitting/crocheting, canning, putting puzzles together, baking, gardening, playing the piano, and playing candy crush. She had a great love of flowers and enjoyed spending time each spring and summer outside taking care of her flower garden. Dee also spent a great deal of time volunteering through 4-H, serving as a club leader and helping with the dog project. She loved to collect anything with wolves. Dee was the glue to the family and her closest loved ones had the pleasure of seeing her feisty side come out from time to time.

Dee is survived by her husband, Bert; children Shane and wife Hannah of Glade, KS; Jodie and husband Ryan of Glade, KS; Kristy and husband Danny of Stuttgart, KS; Nathan and wife Kelly of Conroe, TX; brother Darrell and wife Deb of Stockton, KS, sister Brenda and husband Ronnie of Phillipsburg, KS; 8 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Katy, Allison, Trevor, Morgan, Quinley, Ella and Knox. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Brobst.

We will always carry her memory in our hearts.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the Sts. Mrs. Mongeau will lie in state Thursday from noon until 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a detention deputy after a weekend arrest.

On Saturday, Maize Police arrested&nbsp;Off-duty Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy 28-year-old Nieka Rasberry on on a requested charge of of Domestic Battery, according to a statement from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office.

Rasberry has been employed by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since October 2023 as a detention deputy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rasberry is currently suspended from duty, pending the outcome of the criminal case and an internal investigation.

After meeting the requirement of bond, she is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;pressed a forceful case against&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday in their first and perhaps only debate before the presidential election, repeatedly goading him in an event that showcased their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-harris-issue-positions-worlds-apart-3f80a342c790da64e3de92a4f5760991">starkly different visions</a>&nbsp;for the country on abortion, immigration and American democracy.

The Democratic vice president provoked Trump with reminders about the 2020 election loss that he still denies, delivered derisive asides at his false claims and sought to underscore the Republican former president's role in the Supreme Court's overturning of a national right to abortion two years ago. Trump tore into Harris as too liberal and a continuation of Biden's unpopular administration, as he launched into the sort of freewheeling personal attacks and digressions from which his advisers and supporters have tried to steer him away.

Less than two months from Election Day and hours before the first early ballots will begin to be mailed Wednesday in Alabama, the debate offered the clearest look yet at a presidential race that has been repeatedly upended.

Harris’ performance by nearly every measure seemed to be the opposite of President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Joe Biden’s</a>&nbsp;in June, with sharp, focused answers designed to showcase the contrast between her and Trump, whereas Biden at times was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bidentrumppresidentialdebate-0e7577e9a354a69f50675494fea54ca9">muddled, halting and incoherent</a>. Harris used her body language and facial expressions to confront Trump and express that she found his answers ridiculous, amusing or both — a pronounced change from Biden's slack-jawed expression when Trump attacked him.

Harris appeared intent on casting herself as a relief for voters seeking a break from Trump’s acerbic politics — a contrast highlighted as Trump appeared to be set on his back foot by her needling.

In one moment, Harris turned to Trump and said that as vice president, she had spoken to foreign leaders who “are laughing at Donald Trump,” and said she had spoken to military leaders, “and they say you’re a disgrace.”

As Trump, 78, again questioned her racial identity, the 59-year-old Harris, the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president, pointedly gestured to Trump and responded, “I think the American people want better than that, want better than this.”

Trump in turn tried to link Harris to the still-unpopular Biden, questioning why she hadn’t acted on her proposed ideas while serving as vice president. Trump also focused his attacks on Harris over her assignment by Biden to deal with the root causes of illegal migration.

“Why hasn’t she done it? She’s been there for three and a half years,” he said.

Harris promised tax cuts aimed at the middle class and said she would push to restore a federally guaranteed right to abortion overturned by the Supreme Court two years ago. Trump said his proposed tariffs would help the U.S. stop being cheated by allies on trade and said he would work to swiftly end the Russia-Ukraine war — though he twice refused to say he believed it was in America's interest for Ukraine, which bipartisan majorities in Congress have backed, to win the war.

Trump again denied that he lost to Biden four years ago, when a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to stop the certification of his loss based on false or unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. He tried to reverse the question of threats to American democracy and suggested criticism of him could be linked to the assassination attempt he survived in July.

“I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me,” he said. “They talk about democracy, I’m a threat to democracy. They’re the threat to democracy.”

Trump has in recent days ramped up his threats of retribution if he returns to the White House, saying he would prosecute lawyers, donors, and other officials whom he deems to “cheat” in the election.

“Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people," Harris said, "So let’s be clear about that. And clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that.”

Her campaign ended the debate by expressing openness to another meeting in October — and welcomed an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-endorse-kamala-harris-president-3a36b6f9695c20153891bba35c47f21d">endorsement</a>&nbsp;from megastar&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/taylor-swift">Taylor Swift</a>, who labeled herself a “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jd-vance-kamala-harris-childless-trump-0a37e991097b66c52bff5bf7ecf8de7b">childless cat lady</a>&nbsp;” in a dig at Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jd-vance">JD Vance</a>, as she encouraged her fans to vote.

Harris defends shifts to the center, puts abortion front and center

Harris sought to defend her shifts away from liberal causes to more moderate stances on fracking, expanding Medicare for all and mandatory gun buyback programs — and even backing away from her position that plastic straws should be banned — as pragmatism.

Asked about her changing positions on a number of issues, she twice repeated a phrase she has used to try to explain it away, saying, “My values have not changed.”

Trump, meanwhile, quickly went after Harris for abandoning some of her past liberal positions and said: “She’s going to my philosophy now. In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat.” Harris smiled broadly and laughed.

Harris, in zeroing in on one of Trump’s biggest electoral vulnerabilities, laid the end of a federally guaranteed right to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/abortion">abortion</a>&nbsp;at Trump’s feet for his role in appointing three U.S. Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving more than 20 states in the country with what she called “Trump abortion bans.”

Harris gave one of her&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-debate-kamala-harris-donald-trump-35078cdb5bb939eec323c7aa56434cad">most impassioned answers</a>&nbsp;as she described the ways women have been denied abortion care and other emergency care since that ruling, and said Trump would sign a national abortion ban if he wins.

Trump declared it “a lie,” and said, “I’m not signing a ban and there’s no reason to sign a ban.”

The Republican has said he wants the issue left to the states.

Trump, who is trying to paint the vice president as an out-of-touch liberal while trying to win over voters skeptical he should return to the White House, continued to call Harris a “Marxist” and said, “Everyone knows she’s a Marxist.”

Harris’ eyebrows shot up and she made an amused face, bringing her hand to her chin and staring at him.

Trump leaned on familiar falsehoods and signaled a shift on Ukraine

Trump attacked Harris for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/inflation">inflation</a>&nbsp;seen under the Biden-Harris administration, a major liability for the vice president. He quickly turned his answer to warning about immigrants coming into the country — one of the subjects he’s focused on most heavily in his campaign.

He called his proposed tariffs a straightforward way to make other countries pay up for what he has long argued is an imbalance that hurts the U.S. Harris called the tariffs an effective national sales tax. Trump reacted swiftly and called that “an incorrect statement.”

Throughout his campaign, Trump has leaned on illegal&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/immigration">immigration</a>, an issue that has bedeviled Biden and Harris with rising numbers of illegal border crossings and the arrivals of thousands of people needing shelter in Democratic-led cities. He accused Democrats of abetting large numbers of unauthorized crossings — though they have dropped in recent months in part due to new asylum restrictions by the Biden administration.

But as he often does in his rallies and on his social media account, Trump reeled off a series of falsehoods or unproven claims about migrants. One of those claims was a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/debate-harris-trump-fact-focus-abortion-crime-0e368102d38d87d708a8a497a38f4fb2">debunked rumor</a>&nbsp;that Trump and his allies have spread online in recent days, alleging Haitian immigrants in an Ohio town are hunting and eating pets. Officials in Springfield, Ohio, say they have no evidence of that happening.

“Talk about extreme,” Harris said after Trump talked about dogs and cats being eaten.

Harris' expressions filled their split-screen

As the debate opened, Harris walked up to Trump’s lectern to introduce herself, marking the first time the two had ever met, since Trump skipped her 2021 inauguration. “Kamala Harris,” she said, extending her hand to Trump, who received it in a handshake — the first presidential debate handshake since the 2016 campaign.

Trump has at times resorted to invoking racial and gender stereotypes and falsely claiming that Harris, who attended a historically Black university, hid her race during her career.

“I read where she was not Black,” Trump said when asked about comments questioning Harris' race, adding a minute later, “and then I read that she was Black.” He seemed to suggest her race was a choice, saying twice, “That’s up to her.”

“I think it’s a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president who has consistently over the course of his career attempted to use race to divide the American people,” Harris responded.

While Tuesday’s meeting might be the last time the candidates cross paths on the debate stage, they may cross paths again Wednesday when they both mark the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Harris, Trump and Biden plan to all be at ground zero in lower Manhattan and the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday. Harris and Biden will also visit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, later in the day for a ceremony there.

Trump at one point launched into an attack on Biden, questioning his mental acuity by making the claim that Biden “doesn’t even know he’s alive.”

Harris quickly tried to turn it around to make Trump look less than sharp.

“First of all, I think it’s important to remind the former president, you’re not running against Joe Biden. You’re running against me,” she said.

This is the first appearance in the Top 25 for the Tigers since the 2022 season, when they held a No. 16 ranking on October 11, 2022. The Tigers were receiving votes in the preseason national poll before jumping into the Top 25 after a week of play.

This Thursday in Kansas City the Tigers will face Maryville University in a neutral site match. RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — The Israeli military said Tuesday an American activist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/turkish-american-palestinian-activist-funeral-israel-palestinians-ff3ed17b295793bce4631fdb2a35332c">killed in the West Bank</a>&nbsp;last week was likely shot “indirectly and unintentionally” by soldiers firing upon participants in a demonstration against settlements that turned violent. The acknowledgement drew a strong rebuke from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the activist's family.

Israel expressed its “deepest regret” for the death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/american-shot-killed-west-bank-israel-palestinians-b2f1c741cea3d56eb1a339240dbf036e">Aysenur Ezgi Eygi,</a>&nbsp;a 26-year-old activist from Seattle who also held Turkish citizenship, and said a criminal investigation has been launched.

Blinken condemned the “unprovoked and unjustified” killing when asked about the Israeli inquiry at a news conference in London. “No one should be shot while attending a protest,” he said. “The Israeli security forces need to make some fundamental changes in the way they operate in the West Bank.”

Eygi's family in the U.S. released a statement saying “we are deeply offended by the suggestion that her killing by a trained sniper was in any way unintentional. The disregard shown for human life in the inquiry is appalling.”

An Israeli protester who witnessed the shooting, Jonathan Pollak, said Eygi was killed about half an hour after clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces had subsided, in an area several hundred meters (yards) from where the demonstration took place. Pollak said he saw two Israeli soldiers mount the roof of a nearby home, train a gun in the group’s direction and fire, with one of the bullets striking Eygi in the head.

Israel said its inquiry into Eygi’s killing “found that it is highly likely that she was hit indirectly and unintentionally by (Israeli army) fire which was not aimed at her, but aimed at the key instigator of the riot.”

The killing came amid a surge of violence in the West Bank since the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">Israel-Hamas war</a>&nbsp;began in October, with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-west-bank-jenin-hamas-militants-c1618cc024d8a5269486e266593b5434">increasing Israeli raids</a>, attacks by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-west-bank-raids-bc3383024400ee42518e41f3660acbd4">Palestinian militants</a>&nbsp;on Israelis,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-bank-israel-palestinians-settler-violence-ffa6e84c39861c224f685e660c53a82d">attacks by Israeli settlers</a>&nbsp;on Palestinians and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-6-september-2024-29705c9c6cc59054d74b1dbcd29497df">heavier military crackdowns</a>&nbsp;on Palestinian protests.

Israel says it thoroughly investigates allegations of its forces killing civilians and holds them accountable. It says soldiers often have to make split-second decisions while operating in areas where militants hide among civilians. But even in the most shocking cases — and those captured on video — soldiers often get relatively light sentences.

The Palestinian Authority held a funeral procession for Eygi in the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday. Turkish authorities said they are working on repatriating her body to Turkey for burial in the Aegean coastal town of Didim, as per her family’s wishes.

Eygi was a volunteer with the activist group International Solidarity Movement. But Eygi's uncle said in an interview with the Turkish TV channel HaberTurk that she kept her visit to the West Bank secret from at least some of her family members. She said she was traveling to Jordan to help Palestinians there, he said.

"She hid the fact that she was going to Palestine. She blocked us from her social media posts so that we would not see them,” Yilmaz Eygi said.

The deaths of American citizens in the West Bank have drawn international attention, such as the fatal shooting of a prominent Palestinian-American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, in 2022 in the Jenin refugee camp.

Several independent investigations and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-west-bank-middle-east-israel-8df6c999627efcef2fe0ca2b401e7a2c">reporting by The Associated Press</a>&nbsp;shortly after the killing determined that Abu Akleh was likely killed by Israeli fire. Months later, the military said there was a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-israel-journalists-veterans-al-jazeera-0e33ab0025cf06ee498ab83445e39733">“high probablility”</a>&nbsp;one of its soldiers had mistakenly killed her but that no one would be punished.

Earlier in 2022, Israel’s military said it would punish a senior officer and remove two others from their posts over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-israel-2569b996a0d596a5981d09ef811783f4">the death of Omar Assad, 78</a>, a Palestinian-American who was dragged from a car by Israeli troops, bound and blindfolded after being stopped at a checkpoint.

The military later said the soldiers believed Assad was asleep when they cut his zip-ties and left him face-down in an abandoned building where he had been detained with three other Palestinians.

The deaths of Palestinians who do not have dual nationality rarely receive the same scrutiny.

Human rights groups say Israel rarely holds soldiers accountable for killing Palestinians and that any resulting military investigations often reflect a pattern of impunity. B’Tselem, a leading Israeli watchdog, became so frustrated with the system that in 2016 it dismissed the probes as a whitewash and halted its decades-long practice of assisting investigations.

Last year, an Israeli court acquitted a member of the paramilitary Border Police who had been charged with reckless manslaughter in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinian-autistic-court-jerusalem-shooting-acquitted-cddd8df0d1f9fd2925a5a3ea011655f4">the deadly shooting of 32-year-old Eyad Hallaq</a>, an autistic Palestinian man in Jerusalem’s Old City in 2020. The case had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-middle-east-shootings-863c927ae5a5e2eae21b1dff3bc36c4b">drawn comparisons to the police killing</a>&nbsp;of George Floyd in the United States.

In 2017, Israeli soldier Elor Azaria was convicted for manslaughter and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-90c06663250747a68b6d77e3199d136b">served nine months after he killed a wounded</a>, incapacitated Palestinian attacker in the West Bank city of Hebron. The combat medic was caught on video fatally shooting Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, who was lying motionless on the ground.

His agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed Jones died Monday morning at home in New York's Hudson Valley region. The cause was not immediately clear.

He won a 1977 Grammy for his performance on the “Great American Documents” audiobook.

Some of his other films include “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Greatest” (with Muhammad Ali), “Conan the Barbarian,” “Three Fugitives” and playing an admiral in three Tom Clancy blockbuster adaptations — “The Hunt for Red October,” “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger.” In a rare romantic comedy, “Claudine,” Jones had an onscreen love affair with Diahann Carroll.

Jones made his Broadway debut in 1958’s “Sunrise At Campobello” and would win his two Tony Awards for “The Great White Hope” (1969) and “Fences” (1987). Jones was born by the light of an oil lamp in a shack in Arkabutla, Mississippi, on Jan. 17, 1931. His father, Robert Earl Jones, had deserted his wife before the baby's arrival to pursue life as a boxer and, later, an actor.

When Jones was 6, his mother took him to her parents' farm near Manistee, Michigan. His grandparents adopted the boy and raised him.

“A world ended for me, the safe world of childhood,” Jones wrote in his autobiography, “Voices and Silences.” “The move from Mississippi to Michigan was supposed to be a glorious event. For me it was a heartbreak, and not long after, I began to stutter.”

Too embarrassed to speak, he remained virtually mute for years, communicating with teachers and fellow students with handwritten notes. A sympathetic high school teacher, Donald Crouch, learned that the boy wrote poetry, and demanded that Jones read one of his poems aloud in class. He did so faultlessly.

Teacher and student worked together to restore the boy’s normal speech. “I could not get enough of speaking, debating, orating — acting,” he recalled in his book.

At the University of Michigan, he failed a pre-med exam and switched to drama, also playing four seasons of basketball. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955.

In New York, he moved in with his father and enrolled with the American Theater Wing program for young actors. Father and son waxed floors to support themselves while looking for acting jobs.

True stardom came suddenly in 1970 with “The Great White Hope.” Howard Sackler’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play depicted the struggles of Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing champion, amid the racism of early 20th-century America. In 1972, Jones repeated his role in the movie version and was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor.

Jones’ two wives were also actors. He married Julienne Marie Hendricks in 1967. After their divorce, he married Cecilia Hart, best known for her role as Stacey Erickson in the CBS police drama “Paris,” in 1982. (She died in 2016.) They had a son, Flynn Earl, born in 1983.

In 2022, the Cort Theatre on Broadway&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-earl-jones-james-b2ede81ef88bedef4d17a8f08570b9dd">was renamed after Jones,</a>&nbsp;with a ceremony that included Norm Lewis singing “Go the Distance,” Brian Stokes Mitchell singing “Make Them Hear You” and words from Mayor Eric Adams, Samuel L. The OPEC-Plus export alliance last week postponed its plans to increase crude oil production, but that was not enough to forestall a big drop in prices. The group kept in place its long-term plans to resume production increases, but pushed back the completion date by two months.

October NYMEX crude settled Friday at $67.67 per barrel, the lowest closing price since June of 2023, down $1.48 on the day and a weekly loss of nearly six dollars a barrel. Prices were a few cents higher in morning trading on Monday. 

The average for the month of August was a fraction over $65.62 per barrel. The average for August last year was over $71.

Kansas Common Crude dropped a dollar and a half to start the week at $58 per barrel, down $5.75 in seven days and ten dollars less than the average price so far this year at CHS in McPherson.

The Kansas Corporation Commission reports 89 new intent-to-drill notices last month.&nbsp;After updating totals from March and April, the total for the year stands at 742 intents statewide, compared to 901 by the end of August last year.

Barton County reports six new intents, 23 so far this year. That's down from 29 a year ago but up from 13 through August of 2022. Ellis County notches two new ones, nine so far this year, compared to 24 a year ago and 16 the year before that. In Russell County there are eight new notices so far this year, which is double the tally by this time last year, but down one from 2022. Stafford County reports eleven new intents through August of this year, compared to 21 a year ago and 12 two years ago.

Rig counts are down across the country and across Kansas. 

Baker Hughes reported 582 active rigs nationwide, down one gas rig from last week, with declines in Colorado, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, and increases in West Virginia and New Mexico. 

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports ten active rigs in eastern Kansas, down one, and 15 rigs west of Wichita, which is unchanged. The statewide total is down 17% from a month ago and 31% lower than a year ago.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports six new well completions across the state last week, 907 so far this year, which is down 145 completions from a year ago.

Kansas regulators report two new drilling permits in Barton County out of five in western Kansas and 21 statewide. With 685 so far this year, the statewide total lags behind last year by 149 permits.

The U.S. added 1.8 million barrels of crude to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the biggest weekly increase since DOE began refilling the reserves. Our refills are $16 a barrel cheaper than the original sales price, for a profit of nearly $29 million in the last week, and over $246 million since April. 

EIA says commercial stockpiles dropped 6.9 million barrels to just over 418 million, their lowest level in eleven months.

U.S. crude production held steady at 13.3 million barrels per day. The four-week average is up four percent from the same four weeks last year. Cumulative production so far this year is up nearly seven percent from a year ago.

The U.S. imports more crude than we export by about two million barrels per day. We export more petroleum products than we import by about 5.5 million barrels a day. Thus, we are a net petroleum exporter by just under 3.5 million barrels per day.

Crude exports averaged 3.7 million barrels a day. Four-week average crude exports are up nearly a million barrels a day over last year.&nbsp; Petroleum product exports averaged 7.3 million barrels a day.

U.S. crude imports were down 768,000 daily barrels to 5.8 million last week. Over the last four weeks, crude imports averaged 6.3 million barrels a day, down eight percent from a year ago. Product imports averaged 1.8 million barrels a day.

U.S. operators produced nearly 2.4 billion barrels of crude oil in the first six months of the year. That's just over 13 million barrels a day. The tally in Kansas for January through June is 72,846 barrels per day. The government's monthly production report shows U.S. output rose to 13.2 million barrels per day in June, the latest data available. That's the second best monthly average this year.&nbsp; 

Production in the Sunflower State averaged 77,000 barrels a day in June. Output here rose two percent from May but was down slightly from June of last year. Operators in Texas pumped nearly 5.6 million barrels a day, or more than 42% of the national total.

Exxon Mobil recently joined with Pioneer Natural Resources in a $60 billion merger. Now they're selling off producing conventional wells in the Permian's Central Basin in what could be a billion dollar offering. According to Bloomberg, the value of mergers and acquisitions in the oil and gas sector this year has doubled to over $210 billion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The tally in Kansas for January through June is 72,846 barrels per day. The government's monthly production report shows U.S. output rose to 13.2 million barrels per day in June, the latest data available. That's the second best monthly average this year.&nbsp; Production in the Sunflower State averaged 77,000 barrels a day in June. Output here rose two percent from May but was down slightly from June of last year. Operators in Texas pumped nearly 5.6 million barrels a day, or more than 42% of the national total.Exxon Mobil recently joined with Pioneer Natural Resources in a $60 billion merger. Now they're selling off producing conventional wells in the Permian's Central Basin in what could be a billion dollar offering. Nora Lee Jennings, 84, passed away on September 6, 2024 at the Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on July 25, 1940 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Louella (Thurston) Simpson.

Nora grew up in Codell, KS where she was very active throughout school in band, sports, and cheer. She graduated in 1958. After the birth of her 2 children, Raylan Jennings of Flint, TX and Laura O’Brate of Hartsel, CO she returned to college at Ft. Hays receiving her degree for teaching English. Most of her career was secretarial. Nora was involved in Metaphysics and deeply enjoyed genealogy.

After retiring, she moved to Ness City from Springfield, MO in 2002. She was active with the Historical Society and the Senior Center. Nora had a great sense of humor. She loved deeply in her own way.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Louella Simpson; her sister, Elva Simpson; and her brother, Delmar Simpson.

She is survived by her 2 children, Raylan and Laura; sister Janice Reading; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Nora is being cremated, and a private family service will be held on October 5, 2024 at the Norman Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

&nbsp; Timothy Allen “Tim” Augustine, departed this life on September 5, 2024, at his beloved family farm in Ellis, Kansas, where he spent each day of his life surrounded by the land he loved.Born on June 19, 1965, in Hays, Kansas, to Leonard Sr. and Otillia (Flax) Augustine. Tim grew up with a deep-seated love for farming which would shape not only his career but also his identity. A proud graduate of Ellis High School in 1983, he dedicated his life to the family farm. From an early age, he embedded himself in the rewarding life of a farmer and stockman. He married&nbsp;Lori (Werth) Augustine on October 14, 1989 at St. Mary's Church in Ellis, KS.In 1983, alongside his brother Leonard Jr., Tim founded L&amp;T Dairy, a venture that was a testament to their shared passion for agriculture. After selling the dairy herd in 2001, Tim and Leonard Jr. transitioned the operation into L&amp;T Farms, diversifying into raising beef cattle while continuing his lifelong commitment to crop farming. The farm operated not just as a business but as a family operation, with Tim’s son, Ryan and brothers Darrell and Mark playing vital roles.Tim was known not just for his dedication to hard work, but for his soft heart, kind demeanor and instilling in his children his love of the land and animals. All of the kids worked side by side with their dad from the moment they could pick up a tree branch. He especially loved caring for the bucket calves, often feeding them long beyond their weaning age, simply because he wanted to ensure they were well cared for. Add how he loved to sneak food to the family dogs especially when he was told not to because he always thought they were hungry. His gentle nature endeared him to everyone he met, and his home was always a welcoming place. Tim was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Ellis Knights of Columbus 3rd degree. He also enjoyed polka music and playing pinochle.

His greatest pride, however, was his family. Tim is survived by his devoted wife, Lori, and their beloved children: Ashley Augustine of Hays, Beth Schartz (Michael) of Tonganoxie, KS, Ryan Augustine of Hays, and Lindsay Bekemeyer (Matthew) of Washington, KS; as well as his cherished grandson, Eli Schartz, who brought him immense joy. Tim's siblings, Loretta Zerr (Elmer), Melvin Augustine (Becky) all of Salina, Dewayne "Dewey" Augustine (Pam), Kenneth "Luther" Augustine (Donna) all of Colby, Richard Augustine of Hays, Michael Augustine (Linda) of Ellis, Randy Augustine (Elaine) of Hays, Darrell Augustine, Leonard Jr. Augustine (Cheryl) all of Ellis, Kathy Stack (Rod) of Salina, and Mark Augustine (Noalee) of Hays as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Tim's passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew him. He joins his parents in eternal rest, along with his sister-in-law Deanna Augustine and his nephew Eric Augustine. While his absence will be profoundly felt, his warm spirit and the values he instilled will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

Tim's funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis, KS. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:00 PM all at the church.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 to start MIAA play with a 30-16 win over Missouri Western on Saturday night in front of 6.572 at Lewis Field. The Tigers outscored the Griffons 20-3 in the second half after trailing by three at halftime. FHSU, ranked No. 24 in the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2017 season.

The Tigers quickly took the lead on the first possession of the game. The Tigers needed only 1:38 to go 63 yards in four plays for a touchdown, capped on a 16-yard pass from Jack Dawson to Jabari Lewis. The Tigers had a long look at a field goal on their next drive, but could not connect and then the Griffons responded with a 5-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to tie the game at 7-7. The Tigers drove the ball deep in Griffon territory toward the end of the first quarter, but had to settle for a 19-yard field goal from Carson Arndt&nbsp;to lead 10-7 after the first frame.

The Tigers squandered a chance for more points in the second quarter after gaining a turnover deep in Griffon territory, but they gave the ball right back. Later in the second quarter, the Griffons took their only lead of the game on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Branden Berwald to Michael Haggerty.

Good fortune broke the Tigers' way right at the start of the second half when the Griffons fumbled the kick return and the Tigers fell on the ball at the MWSU 20. That led to a 30-yard field goal by Carson Arndt&nbsp;to tie the game at 13-13. The Tigers would pick up another field goal to take the lead back on their next drive, this time Arndt connecting from 35 yards to put the Tigers up 16-13. Then on their final drive of the third quarter, Shane Watts&nbsp;broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run as time expired. FHSU led 23-13 going to the fourth quarter.

A Cody Watson 48-yard field goal into a decent breeze brought the Griffons back within seven points on the first Griffon drive of the fourth quarter, but the Tiger defense would not surrender any more points the rest of the way, stopping three more Missouri Western drives. FHSU cashed in more points on its third drive of the fourth quarter, marching 54 yards on seven plays and capped on a one-yard touchdown run by Caleb Heavner.

Shane Watts had a big game for the Tigers with 195 all-purpose yards. He rushed the ball a career-high 24 times and came up just a yard short of his career best in rushing yardage, finishing the game at 161 yards on the ground. He added 34 receiving yards, with a 29-yard dash setting up the Heavner score in the fourth quarter. Dawson&nbsp;threw for 158 yards on 13-of-26 passing, while Cale Cormaney&nbsp;led the Tigers in receiving yards with 47. Jabari Lewis&nbsp;finished with 125 all-purpose yards, 96 on kick returns and 29 on receptions. Arndt finished 3-of-4 on field goal attempts in the game.

On defense, Mason Perez&nbsp;led the Tigers with eight tackles, followed by John Johnson&nbsp;with seven. Myles Menges&nbsp;recorded the only sack of the night for the Tigers, which was a strip sack to give the Tigers a turnover. It helped set up the scoring drive with Arndt's field goal that put the Tigers up 16-13 in the third quarter.

Both teams did the majority of their offensive damage on the ground, 208 rushing yards for the Griffons compared to 179 for the Tigers. The Griffons finished with 382 total yards, while the Tigers finished with 337.Quarterback Branden Berwald led the Griffons in passing with 120 yards and rushing with 88. Jake Berrey led the Griffons in receiving yards with 53. Kienen Gaskin led MWSU in tackles with 10, while Jaden Brown recorded two of five sacks for MWSU.

Saturday's win marked the first time the Tigers have come back from a halftime deficit and won since rallying from 21-down to beat #12 Nebraska-Kearney on 42-35 on October 2, 2021.

The Tigers play their first road game of the season next Saturday evening at Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats started the season ranked No. 22 in the AFCA Top 25 Poll, but now sit at 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA after a loss at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alice Munsch Herrman, 85, formerly of Schoenchen, died Thursday, September 5, 2024 at The W Place in Kingman.

She was born April 19, 1939 in Hays, the daughter of Frank and Bernadine (Leiker) Mermis. In 1957, she graduated from Hays High School, and on October 11, 1958, she was united in marriage to Earl J. “Jess” Munsch in Hays. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1991. Alice was united in marriage to Michael F. “Mike” Herrman on April 23, 2004 in Hays, and he preceded her in death on February 22, 2018. She was the director of the Hays Senior Center, a devoted homemaker, and an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen, and the St. Anthony Altar Society. Alice enjoyed dancing, traveling with her husband Mike, and she loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include her sons, Troy Munsch and wife Laura of Salina and Les Munsch of Thornton, CO, a daughter, Stacey Walters and husband Bob of Kingman, two brothers, Frank Mermis and wife Shirley of Olathe and Bill Mermis and wife Betty of Overland Park, a sister-in-law, Rosie Mermis of Olathe, six grandchildren, Cody Munsch and wife Rachelle, Cole Walters and wife Kayla, Payton Walters, Lauryn Munsch, Contessa Munsch, and Stella Munsch, a great grandson, Kaden Munsch, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Jess and Mike, three brothers, Cecil, Vernon, and Gerald Mermis, four sisters, Lillian Arnhold, Mary Ellen Schmidt, Betty Leiker, and Delores Hoffman, and a grandson, Brady Munsch.

Fabian Gerardo Hernández Ríos "Chupes," born on August 17, 1990, in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, passed away on September 1, 2024, in Gove County, Kansas, at the age of 34.

Fabian was a man of quiet strength, known for his hardworking nature and gentle spirit. Born and raised in the vibrant city of León, Guanajuato, he carried with him the rich culture and deep-rooted values of his homeland throughout his life. His journey took him across borders, where he built a life full of love, resilience, and dedication.

On October 28, 2023, Fabian found his greatest joy when he married the love of his life, Adela Garcia Hernandez. Though their time together as husband and wife was brief, their bond was deep and unwavering, a testament to the profound love they shared. Together, they created a home filled with laughter, music, and the warmth of family.

Fabian was a dedicated worker who took pride in his craft. He worked in construction and concrete for Weigel Concrete, LLC, in Colby, Kansas, where his meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic earned him respect and admiration from his colleagues. Despite the demands of his job, Fabian always made time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. He had a deep appreciation for nature and could often be found taking long walks, soaking in the beauty of the world around him. He was also an avid boxing enthusiast, finding inspiration and strength in the sport. Music was another of his great passions; whether relaxing at home or spending time with loved ones, Fabian's life was accompanied by the melodies he cherished.

Fabian's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Adela Garcia; his devoted parents, Maria Rios and Luciano Hernandez; and his cherished stepchildren, Ray Alderete, Mia Garcia, and Alexandro Garcia. His love extended to his grandchildren, Moises Garcia and Isaiah Martinez, who brought him immense joy. Fabian was also a beloved brother to Wendy, Adriana, Luis, Julio, and Abigail Hernandez, all of whom he shared an unbreakable bond with. Fabian’s extended family and many friends will forever remember his kindness, generosity, and the gentle smile that could light up a room.
