I love it when young alumni remind us why we do what we do—why we teach, mentor, and build programs that stretch beyond the classroom. Kiley Whipple is one of those students. A recent graduate of Fort Hays State University, Kiley embodies the spirit of a Tiger: bold, compassionate, and committed to making a difference.

Originally from Ingalls, Kansas, Kiley graduated this spring with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning dual degrees in Agricultural Education and Secondary Education. Her academic excellence is matched only by her dedication to service and leadership. From her work as a VIP Ambassador to her role in the registrar’s office, Kiley has left her mark on nearly every corner of our campus. And now, she’s blazing a new trail—one that connects agriculture, education, and community in a way that’s never been done before at FHSU.

This summer, Kiley took on a pioneering role as the lead organizer and educator for the first-ever FHSU Farm to Plate summer camps, a collaboration between our Department of Agriculture and the Sternberg Museum Science Camps. These camps, designed for children ages 6 to 11, offered an immersive week-long experience in agriculture, food science, and sustainability. From soil health and gardening to animal science and nutrition, the camps answered one simple but profound question: Where does our food come from?

Kiley’s leadership was instrumental in transforming this idea into reality. Selected as a local food fellow through the K-State Extension Farm to Plate initiative, she spent four weeks preparing the camp curriculum and logistics, followed by two weeks of hands-on camp instruction. Her vision was clear: to give children meaningful, tactile experiences that would spark curiosity and foster a lifelong appreciation for agriculture.

“The summer camps were really successful,” Kiley shared. “We wanted to make sure the kids had as much hands-on experience as we could get in the week they were here with us.”

And hands-on they were! Campers interacted with live animals, including pigs, goats, calves, and sheep. They fed a bottle calf brought in by Kiley’s own family, explored gardening techniques, and learned about production agriculture. They even climbed aboard a combine brought by Carrico Implement. Community partners like Harvest Hays and Midland Marketing provided engaging presentations and activities that brought the food system to life.

Kiley’s humility and gratitude shine through when she talks about the people who helped make the camps a success. She credits Dr. Sophie Ano, chair of the FHSU Agriculture&nbsp;Department, and Polly Pfeifer, the department’s administrative assistant, for their tireless coordination and support. She also praises Gene Hanson, Mark Weve, and the entire University Farm team for their readiness to jump in and assist wherever needed.

“There are so many people I need to thank,” Kiley said. “It was a real community effort.”

That phrase—community effort—is at the heart of everything Kiley does. Whether she’s mentoring young students, collaborating with local organizations, or preparing to teach agriculture and advise FFA at WaKeeney High School this fall, Kiley brings people together. She builds bridges between generations, between communities, and between education and real-world experience.

Kiley’s work with Harvest Hays this summer is another example of her heart for service. This social enterprise, run by The Arc of Central Plains, empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through high tunnel farming.

As she begins her new teaching role in WaKeeney, Kiley will also be pursuing her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction right here at FHSU. Her commitment to lifelong learning and educational excellence is a testament to the values we hold dear at Fort Hays State.

I am incredibly proud of Kiley and the legacy she is building. Her story reminds us that education is not confined to textbooks or lecture halls—it lives in the soil, in the barn, in the conversations between a child and a farmer. It thrives when we connect knowledge with action, and when we empower students to lead with heart.

The Larks are 3-0 at the NBC and earned a bye to the quarterfinals by winning their pool.

OVERLAND PARK – With the intention of elevating Kansas as a destination for trails&nbsp;and outdoor connection, Kansas Trails, Inc. (KTI), has launched as the first statewide&nbsp;nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting, supporting, and empowering the vibrant&nbsp;trail community across the state.

Ellis County trails include Dr. Howard Reynolds Nature Trail at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, and the Ellis Schoenthaler Memorial Walking Trail.

Designed to serve every trail organization, city, steward, and volunteer in Kansas, KTI aims&nbsp;to provide trail maps, expert resources, technical assistance, advocacy and support to help&nbsp;ensure Kansas trails are accessible, sustainable and thriving both now and for future&nbsp;generations.

“Kansas Trails, Inc., is here to empower everyone who loves, builds, and maintains trails,”&nbsp;said Mike Scanlon, KTI Executive Director. “We commit ourselves to developing and&nbsp;supporting trail systems that enrich public health, fuel local economies, and preserve the&nbsp;natural and cultural heritage of this state.”

As a central hub for trail enthusiasts, KTI offers an array of services and resources,&nbsp;including:

• Interactive maps to help Kansans discover trails (See KTI’s Kansas trail map);

• technical assistance and resources for communities and organizations to plan,&nbsp;design and construct sustainable trails;

• promotional assistance to help spread the word about trail events across the state&nbsp;and inspire more people to explore and take advantage of the benefits of connecting&nbsp;with the outdoors;

• advocacy and support to ensure Kansas trails are accessible, sustainable, and wellmaintained.

As part of its mission to connect and empower trail users, builders and communities, KTI&nbsp;recently launched its Trail.Talk.Tuesday free webinar series. The hour-long webinars, which&nbsp;started July 8, are scheduled for noon on the second Tuesday of each month through&nbsp;January 2026.

With topics ranging from planning, building and maintaining trails, to&nbsp;exploring and celebrating Kansas’ thriving trail network, the series has something for&nbsp;everyone who has a passion for trails. Register here for the next session on Aug. 12.

KTI also works in close partnership with state and local agencies to underscore the&nbsp;importance of trails in boosting outdoor recreation, rural revitalization, tourism, and&nbsp;community well-being.

Born from a virtual roundtable of local leaders, nonprofits, and state agencies, KTI grew into&nbsp;a grassroots coalition. With startup funding from Sunflower Foundation, a statewide health&nbsp;philanthropy serving all of Kansas, KTI became an established nonprofit and was granted&nbsp;501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service.

The organization is governed by a board of directors consisting of dedicated trail advocates,&nbsp;community leaders and outdoor enthusiasts from across Kansas.

WICHITA – Due to continuing thunder and lightning Wednesday the
6 p.m. single elimination game between Derby and Junction City and the 8:30
p.m. matchup between San Diego and Lonestar have been moved to Thursday.

Now the San Diego and Lonestar game will be play at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The winner will play the Hays Larks in the final game of the day Thursday, scheduled

⚾Updated NBC World Series schedule

In her second term as governor and final 18 months in public office, Gov. Laura Kelly has elevated water in Kansas to her highest priority, her "North Star."

"All the other issues are important as well," she said in an interview with Hays Post, "but if we don't do something about water, none of that will matter in the long run."

Some areas of western Kansas dependent on the Ogallala Aquifer have <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/bf6fe01e-4e25-4800-baa9-da74384387eb">fewer than 25 years of usable water left</a>, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

More than 150 communities are at or above the acceptable nitrate levels in their drinking water.

In the past legislative session, Kelly signed a bipartisan bill creating the Water Program Task Force. A <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/7d27068a-02af-4a1e-b0bb-825c4ca501ab">ceremonial signing of House Bill 2172 was in Hays </a>on July 9 in recognition of the city's long-time leadership in water conservation programs and practices.

The new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnipVdorz2Y">task force met for the first time</a>&nbsp;on July 21 in Topeka. It is charged with developing a long-term sustainable strategy for dealing with water that also includes a dedicated funding source.

Kelly plans to spend her political capital to tackle a politically charged issue.

"This is certainly not the first time we've talked about water in Kansas," she said. "There have been many other sophisticated, thoughtful water plans put into place over the years by previous administrations. 

"But none of them really got implemented in a long-term way that makes a consistent difference. Part of that is because it is so incredibly controversial in many ways. ... You've got different sides of the state with different water issues that need different kinds of solutions and interventions. And there are so many stakeholders."

There are approximately 20 state entities involved in water regulations. That's too many, Kelly said.&nbsp;

"It's going to be painful for some people. It will be political, and it will be controversial. But it's absolutely essential we have those conversations and make those decisions going forward," she said.

The governor, who is not a member of the task force, wants to see a more efficient and streamlined process of dealing with water management in Kansas.

She likens the idea to the state's comprehensive highway program created almost 40 years ago.

"Just like roads and bridges, water is not something you can fund on a year-in and year-out basis. It's got to be a long-term guaranteed funding structure so that projects that overlap a budget year can be funded and carried through," Kelly said.

It is up to the task force to research funding possibilities, she said, and then to come up with recommendations to present to the legislature.

Members of the task force include area state representatives Rep. Jim Minnix, R-Scott City, and Ken Rahjes, R-Agra. Minnix is a co-chair along with&nbsp;Sen. Kenny Titus, R-Wamego.

Last week's inaugural meeting agenda was intentionally broad in scope with an overview of water management, funding and planning in Kansas. The presentations then focused on evaluating future and current risks to groundwater and surface water quantity.&nbsp;

"I'm encouraged by the progress that we've made and what is to come,"&nbsp;Kelly said.&nbsp;"Now is the time to follow through and deliver a safe and resilient water supply for the generations of Kansans to come."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stanley
Wellbrock, age 79, of Sunrise Beach, Missouri &nbsp;passed away August 21,
2024, at his home.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place at the Kidwell-Garber
Funeral Home in Missouri as requested by the family.

Stanley was born
April 25, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Clarence 'Pete' and Leona (Kuhn)
Wellbrock.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Barbara Jean “BJ” (Mohr) on July
3, 1969.&nbsp; &nbsp;Stanley graduated from Victoria High School in 1963.

Stanley worked for
Koch Services Inc. for several years.&nbsp; After Koch, Stan drove for Wal-Mart
for 20 years before retiring.

Stan enjoyed being
outdoors more than anything else.&nbsp; Some of Stanley’s most important
memories of his younger years were of hunting the local areas with his
dad.&nbsp; Boating on his Cruiser at the Lake of the Ozarks was one of his most
favorite past times with his wife, BJ whom he loved dearly.

In his mid to
later years, Stan would hold in high regard his many talks with his brothers,
other family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.

Stan is survived
by his wife, Barbara Jean 'BJ', of the home; his two brothers, Neil Wellbrock
and wife, Pam of Victoria, KS; Rick Wellbrock and wife, Dee, of Hays, KS;
several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded
in death by his parents, Pete and Leona; and one nephew, Jared Wellbrock.

A Celebration of
Life Reception will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 1:00 till 4:00
P.M. at the Victoria V.F.W., 204 East Main Street, Victoria Kansas.

Harriett Von Feldt age 85, of
Victoria, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Rooks County
Health Center in Plainville, Kansas.

She was the daughter of Otto
J. and Bertha Rosalene 'Rosie' (Wynn) Von Lintel.&nbsp; She was born on&nbsp;
February 24, 1940, in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp; She married Gerald J. 'Jerry' Von Feldt on October 17, 1959, at Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded
her in death on January 24, 2023.

Harriett was a homemaker. She
was a part owner of Wedding Connections for a number of years, and was owner of
Ultimate Cakes by Harriett for over 30 years. She was a very talented artist
and designer of cakes for wedding, birthday, anniversary, and others.&nbsp; She
enjoyed sewing and quilting and made a quilt for all of her children and
grandchildren.

She was a member of The
Basilica of Saint Fidelis, and Saint Fidelis Christian Mothers.&nbsp; She grew
up in Victoria, and was a 1958 graduate of Victoria High School.

Survivors include her
children, Gerald Von Feldt Jr. and wife, Anita, Frisco, TX; Beverly Scheck and
husband, Tim, Prosper, TX; Sherry Sanders and husband, Ivan, Hays, KS; Dale Von
Feldt and wife, Judy, Olathe, KS; her grandchildren, Joseph Sanders and fiancé
&nbsp;Kimber Thompson; Jacob Sanders (Jordyn); Jay Sanders (Sophia); Jarrett
Sanders (Megan); Sarah Keckonen (Andrew); Kelsei Graham (Jason); Tyler Scheck

Faye Weilert, 75, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, July 24,
2025 at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence.

She was born July 28, 1949 in Hays, the daughter of Walter
and Mary (Armbruster) Hafenstine.&nbsp; On
September 6, 1969 she was united in marriage to Michael D. Weilert.&nbsp; Together they had three sons, Curtis, Chad,
and Gene.&nbsp; Faye earned her Bachelor's
Degree in Education from Fort Hays State University in 1972.&nbsp; She taught elementary school in Antonino, was
active in the family business, and later in life, worked as a dietary aide at a
nursing home where she enjoyed helping others. &nbsp;She volunteered for the Senior Companion
Program in Hays and enjoyed quilting, caring for her dogs, and gatherings with
her family. &nbsp;While living in Hays she was
a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include her three sons, Curtis Weilert and wife
Shelley, Chad Weilert, and Gene Weilert and wife Trina, eight grandchildren,
three-step grandchildren, two great grandchildren, her sister Carol Hobbs, her
brother Doug Hafenstine and wife Christy, her sister-in-law Betty Hafenstine,
and her stepmother Jean Hafenstine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rex
Hafenstine, and her great grandson Kayden Michael Weilert.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, August 11,
2025 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Fr. Fred Gatschet
officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in
WaKeeney City Cemetery in WaKeeney, and a dinner will be at 1:00 pm at the VFW

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Sunset Valley Mobile Home Park, 122 Burgundy Lane, Hays, public water supply system.&nbsp;

The advisory was issued due to the water supply well having to be shut down for repairs.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the Sunset Valley Mobile Home Park, Hays, indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Sunset Valley Mobile Home Park in Hays

Carolyn Lavon Olson, beloved mom, grandma, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Willow Home in Hays, Kansas after a brave fight with cancer. She was 89 years old.

Carolyn was born on November 3, 1935 in the home of her maternal grandparents in McIntosh, South Dakota to Carlisle and Evelyn Buel. Carolyn‘s youth was spent on the farm in south central North Dakota, where she attended country school. The smell of alfalfa brought her back to the special memories of childhood. After attending two years of college in Kansas, Carolyn pursued an education in nursing. In 1958, she graduated from the diploma school of nursing program in Mitchell, South Dakota. While studying to become a nurse, Carolyn met the love of her life on a blind date set up by mutual friends. Tom and Carolyn wed on August 30, 1958 in McIntosh, South Dakota. Together, they worked, played and raised five children on their lovely piece of property just outside of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Carolyn was a fabulous gardener. She especially loved growing green beans and other produce for her family. She was a talented cook and baker. Her family loved her wonderful homemade buns, caramels, and fresh strawberry pie! Other hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting and reading. Friends and family received many of her wonderful homemade gifts.

Carolyn enjoyed camping and traveling with her husband Tom. They loved traveling to Branson Missouri many times over the years. They had many other fun adventures in their camper.

Carolyn had a 40 year career as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls on the medical/surgical unit, the operating room, but spent the majority of her career on the Obstetrics unit. She so loved caring for newborn babies!

Carolyn had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. She read her Bible faithfully and she knew Christ as her personal Savior. Carolyn was a member of the church of the Nazarene in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. After moving to Guernsey, Wyoming, she was a part of Faith Fellowship Baptist Church. Carolyn moved to Hays Kansas in March 2024 where she became a part of the North Oak community Church family. Her faith was very important to her.

Carolyn leaves behind her five children, Valerie Mills of Casper, Wyoming, Jay (Nancy) Olson of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Paula (Kurt) Martin of Hays, Kansas, Kristi (Davin) Wirrenga of Jamestown, North Dakota and Denise O’Neil of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. She also leaves 18 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Tom of 66 years, her parents, her grandson, Judson Thomas Jarboe, and twin grandsons, Otto and Elliot Wirrenga.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Details will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Voice of the Martyrs or to North Oak Community Church (Operation Christmas Child on the memo line).

NBC World Series in Wichita, officials have released the bracket, and the Hays
Larks will take on the winner of the game between the Lonestar Baseball Club
and the San Diego Stars at 6 p.m. Thursday in Wichita.

The Larks won pool A with a perfect 3-0 record and earned a
bye to the quarterfinals.

⚾Bracket set for NBC World Series

NORMAN, Okla. - The Fort Hays State men's golf team had four individuals named 2024-25 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars, announced Tuesday (July 29) by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Jacob George, Parker Krob, Cooper Scheck and Cole Streck all received the honor this season. FHSU's four honorees were the most in the MIAA and tied for fourth in all Division II behind only Georgia Southwestern, Lander and Saint Leo who had five selections each.

To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.

Jacob George played in 27 rounds on the year, turning in a stroke average of 76.11. He fired four rounds at-or-under par. George completed his degree in finance this spring with a cumulative GPA of 3.54. The Winfield, Kan. native was a CSC Academic All-District pick and was named on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth time.

Parker Krob posted a stroke average of 75.75 as a senior, including a pair of sub-par rounds. He graduated this spring with a degree in biology emphasizing in health professions with a cumulative GPA of 3.54. The Stockton, Kan. native was named to the CSC Academic All-District list for the second time in his career in addition to being listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth time.

Cooper Scheck led the squad with a stroke average of 72.15 across 33 rounds of competition, earning PING All-Central Region honors in addition to picking up his second All-MIAA honor. The junior won the Newman Invitational and turned in six top-10 finishes while finishing at-or-under par in six of his 12 tournaments. Scheck fired 11 sub-par rounds, including a 7-under 64 in the first round of the Hillcat Classic. He continues to maintain a perfect 4.00 GPA as a health and human performance major emphasizing in sport and exercise therapy. He was a second team CSC Academic All-America At-Large selection in addition to earning CSC Academic All-District status for a second time while also earning the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the MIAA Academic Excellence Award and a spot on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Cole Streck finished up his career as a Tiger as an All-MIAA selection after turning in a stroke average of 73.9 across 30 events. He tied for second on the team with seven rounds at-or-under par, including a 4-under 67 at the Hillcat Classic. Streck graduated this spring with a degree in finance, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.29. The Great Bend, Kan. native picked up his second MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition this season.

A total of 15 MIAA student-athletes received the honor, including three from Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma and Rogers State and two from Northeastern State.

If you think you want to leave your business anytime soon, you need to start now, according to an economic specialist.

Michael Aumack,&nbsp;economic specialist and public information officer with the U.S. Small Business Administration Wichita District, spoke at a Chamber in Hays luncheon on Friday.

He said it might take years for a business owner to develop a succession plan.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6b771370-52d1-4f43-ae23-a9eab000691f">More than half of business owners are 55 years or older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey. The youngest Baby Boomers are set to reach retirement age in 2030.</a>

Aumack echoed in his talk on Friday the importance of succession planning during a time when many business owners are aging and looking toward retirement.

&nbsp;"Succession, think of it as keeping your success rolling," Aumack said.

"Your entity, your business, is always growing, and the world is always changing," he said. ... "You need to look at your business as nothing remains the same. 

"Everything is dynamic. It is a way to look at all of the critical things: your key employees, your markets, key roles in your business and your role in your business. What happens if one of those things changes?"

He said business owners need to have plans to keep their businesses rolling through market fluctuations or unforeseen incidents.

The other aspect of succession is plans to leave a business, hopefully, voluntarily.

"It's never too early to start, and it sometimes takes years to get things lined up, so your business is at its greatest valuation," Aumack said.

"And you as a business owner can walk away and say, 'This baby is going to hum, and keep growing without me like a turn-key business," he said. "The closer you get it to turn-key, the more valuable it is.

"If you are the magic that keeps it going, and the magic walks out the door, so does the business."

Reasons owners are forced to quit: • Distress-financial or personal • Disability-physical or mental impairment • Divorce-full of consequences for all parties • Dynamics-changing markets, models and technology • Disputes-between partners • Death-of principal owner

Aumack said there are trade-offs and rarely win-wins.

"It's you getting a really good idea of just how valuable the business is and how much someone is willing to pay for it," he said.

Aumack provided worksheets available through the Small Business Administration that business owners can use to calculate an approximate value for their businesses.

He said it's essential for business owners to separate themselves from their businesses, both on paper and in terms of labor.

He said business owners need to consider if they want to leave their businesses intact for their neighbors, and then what they need financially to carry on after they leave those businesses.

There are three ways to exit a business: Liquidate-No planning needed, yields the least value Sell-Understanding how the business will be valued at exit is essential to this plan. Continue as an absentee owner-Seller financed-exit in stages

Aumack said you need to look at your employees and identify the key employees who drive results.&nbsp;

"How can I incentivize them to keep doing what they're doing and keep them happy and productive?" he said.

Business owners might need to reconsider their debt structure. Service-based business owners might consider purchasing instead of leasing their buildings. This will allow them to build equity in real property.

You could also acquire a smaller competitor or initiate a merger.

Documenting procedures will also help you show value to potential buyers.

He also recommended developing an advisory team. This could include your banker, accountant, CPA or a close friend who can advise you.

Barton Community College announces spring 2025 graduates from the area

Diana Elizabeth Gaona, 83, Russell, died Monday, July 28,
2025, at Russell Regional Hospital.

She was born August 26, 1941, in Webster, South Dakota, the
daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Block) Helwig.&nbsp;
She was a 1959 graduate of Waubay High School in Waubay, South Dakota.&nbsp; Diana worked as an LPN and then dedicated her
time to raising two boys.&nbsp; She always had
a smile on her face and she loved to play bingo.

Gaona and wife Tonya of Wichita and Chad Gaona of Edmond, OK, sister, Gladys
Grubbs of Scottsdale, AZ, granddaughter, Ava Gaona of Wichita, as well as many
other extended family.She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Clarence
Helwig and twin brother Don Helwig, and sisters,&nbsp;Evelyn Hamman, Violet Maxwell, Deloris Wieger, and Esther Loterbauer.The family will honor Diana’s life privately and would
encourage others to share cherished memories.&nbsp;
Memorials are suggested to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays.&nbsp; Arrangements are in the care of Hays Memorial
Chapel Funeral Home and condolences and memories of Diana may be shared with
