The Ellis County 4-H Shooting Sports Club is sending nine youth archers, ages 9-18, to the State 4-H Archery competition in Wakarusa, KS on September 21st. The 2024 4-H archery program includes 30 youth participants from Ellis County and five youth from Pawnee County 4-H. The 4-H Shooting Sports program provides an opportunity for caring adults to assist youth in positive youth development.

Want to learn proper and safe ways to shoot an air rifle, shotgun or bow and arrow? Check out the shooting sports project! The project teaches gun safety, hunting practices plus an opportunity to test your skills. If you have an interest in guns and/or hunting this project is a great way to learn. Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports adheres to the National Shooting Sports Policies.

4-H offers a diverse range of projects that engage youth in hands-on learning across various fields. In Animal Science, members can work with species like beef, goats, horses and more, diving into veterinary science as well. The Communication &amp; Expressive Arts projects encourage creativity through performing arts, photography, and visual arts. Consumer &amp; Family Science covers essential life skills such as sewing, nutrition, and interior design. In Natural Resources, youth explore environmental science, geology, and wildlife. Leadership &amp; Personal Development projects foster civic engagement and self-determination. The Plant Sciences focus on entomology, agronomy, and horticulture, while Engineering &amp; Technology includes exciting areas like robotics, renewable energy, and aerospace. With such a broad spectrum of projects, 4-H empowers youth to develop skills, leadership, and a passion for learning.

ROBERTSON: Make 4-H Your Target

George Duane Harris passed away on August 23, 2024, at his home in Stockton, KS. He was born on August 28, 1943, in Stafford, Kansas to George William and Edna Pearl (Flanders) Harris.

Duane joined the U.S. Air Force in 1965. He served as a Staff-Sergeant in Thailand during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he married Gloria Goddard on October 11, 1969, in Stockton. The couple moved to Teaneck, New Jersey where he worked for Sears and Roebuck as a Credit Sales Manager. While in New Jersey they we blessed with their first child, Edna. In 1972 they moved to Stockton and Duane worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. Their family welcomed their second child, Crystal, a short time later. Their family was completed upon the birth of their third child, Kirtis. Duane later transferred to the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Water Resources, where he retired. He enjoyed helping his mother-in-law with farm work for many years in his free time and continued helping with the farm for the remainder of his life.

While living in Stockton, he was actively involved in the community. He was a member of the Main Street Christian Church for many years and served as an elder and a board member. Later he transferred to the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg where he also served as an elder and board member. He was an active member of Stockton Lions Club until it disbanded after which he joined the Plainville Lions Club. He even served a term as District Governor with the Lions Club from 1989-1990. He also belonged to Gideons. As a dedicated citizen of Stockton, Duane was a key person in keeping the Stockton Food Pantry open and available for those in need until his health limited his participation.

Duane loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He especially enjoyed interacting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always got excited when one of them dropped by for a visit or when he was invited to any of their events. He always looked forward to his grandkids’ “Graduation Trips” where the grandkids got to go with them and do the planning and the driving. They were able to take trips to California, the Grand Canyon, PBR in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the Painted Dessert and Carlsbad Cavern, and even March Madness. He was determined to do these trips with all the grandkids. He was looking forward to two more such trips.

Cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks in football and basketball was a pastime he enjoyed with long-time friends Rocque Garcia and Dennis Bedore. They would often watch games together at home. They even took road trips to watch away games including Texas. Duane would watch just about any sport on TV, including golf.

Duane could be found in front of his own sewing machine piecing together quilt tops for his great-grandchildren and the little ones in church. Gloria was tasked with completing them. He usually had them piled up waiting for her to finish them.

Duane was a loving and devoted husband, and was blessed by three children, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. All of whom will greatly miss his wisdom, love, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Goodwin; sister, Sheryll White; and his twin sisters, Pauleen and Paulette Harris.

Survivors include his wife of almost 55 years, Gloria of the home in Stockton; children, Kirtis Harris (Kari) of Seward, NE, Edna Jenkins (Wayne) of Hill City, KS, and Crystal Kearns (Benjamin) of Phillipsburg, KS; eight grandchildren: Kassandra “Kasey” Grauerholz (Craig) of Kensington, KS, Caryssa McKinnon (John) of Linton, IN, Mary Benton (Brad) of Stockton, Andrew Johnson (fiancé Taylor) of LaCrosse, KS, Jacob Kearns of Phillipsburg, KS, Jarod Harris (Miranda) of Ann Harbor, MI, Krystyn Harris of High Point, NC, and George Jenkins Jr. of Hill City, KS; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, George Riffel (Jeanette) of Ness City; sister-in-law, Terrie Goddard of Salina, KS; ex son-in-law, Donald Johnson of LaCrosse, KS; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am on October 12, 2024 at the First Christian Church, 150 S. 7th in Phillipsburg, KS 67661.

George Duane Harris

Marion Gene Brooks, son of Frank Hobart Brooks and Minnie Leola Kesler Brooks, was born on October 14, 1928, on the family’s Gove County farm in the new house his father was building. He passed away on September 22, 2024, at the age of 95.

He graduated from Sunshine Grade School in rural Gove County, where he would walk three miles home from school with neighboring children when the weather was warm. Afterward, he began learning about farming. Later, he met Joyce Julianna Hammond while roller skating in WaKeeney. While dating, he learned that her birthday was October 13, one day before his, so they agreed to be married on October 15, 1950, at the Methodist Church in WaKeeney.

This union was blessed with four children: Gale Eugene, Charles (Chuck) Leon, Mark Franklin, and Rita Joyce.

As a teenager, Marion gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized. A member of the Dunkard Brethren Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and treasurer.

Marion enjoyed farming, painting, and constructing houses. He also worked for Midwest Products, Flex King Industries, and Quinstar for 29 years, and subsequently at the Swift Bullet Co. In his later years, he kept busy in his home shop, making various wooden gifts for family and friends.

Marion enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball and volleyball. He and Joyce traveled the world, visiting 35 countries. They especially appreciated river cruises and trips to the Holy Land. During retirement, they became "Winter Texans" in McAllen, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Eunice; sister, Leona Reed; and brother, Merlin Brooks.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, and their children: Gale (Sherry), Chuck (Denise), Mark, and Rita (Mark Avila). His 13 grandchildren are Neysa (Steve Hodes), Rochelle (Jared Comfort), Taylor Brooks (Bonnie), Tauni (Nate Seyer), Melissa Whitaker, Melinda (Daniel Shinault), Bryon (Jessica Brooks), Bradley Brooks, Kristal (Garrett Werth), Jessica (Eric Jacques), Morgan (Mike Lawson), Andrew (Aaron Avila), and Matthew Avila.

His 32 great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “GGPa,” are Stevie, Peyton, Hudson, Kensington, Ocean, Indigo, Sapphire, Symphony, Midnight, Navy, Owen, Delaney, Avery, Makenna, Hannah, Caleb, Jaydon, Clara, Lexie, Kennedy, Sydney, Colt, Jordan, Bekah, Logan, Emery, Addilyn, Cooper, Colby, Evan, Cyrus, and Isla. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Paul (Terry Hammond) and Bill Reed, sister-in-law Janis Milwee, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, located at 901 South Main St., Quinter, KS, on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A funeral service will take place at Church of the Brethren, located at 700 Grant St., Quinter, KS, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with interment immediately following at Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter, KS.

Marion Gene Brooks

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of William Michael Schwarz, on September 19, 2024. Bill was beloved as a dad, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle and friend who positively touched the lives of everyone he met. His unexpected departure leaves a deep void in our hearts.

Bill was born on October 6, 1946, in Colby, Kansas; the second of Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz’s five children. He enjoyed riding horses as he was raised on a farm outside Angelus, KS. While attending grade school in Angelus, a 4H chapter was available for a couple of years. Bill picked out one of his dad’s steers to raise. FLECK was so calm that he became a family pet, and Bill gave his siblings rides on his back. All three at the same time. Fleck was reserve grand champion at the county fair, and after the auction, tears flowed every time he saw cattle. He excelled in high school at St Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, KS, where he was a top marksman on the school’s rifle team. Upon completion of high school, he helped build I-70 from Goodland to Russell, KS and joined the Kansas National Guard in Colby. He then became a mechanic for Hooker Chevy-Olds in Oakley, and soon met the love of his life, Linda Sidles. They were married on July 13, 1968, and lived in Oakley their entire married lives. Bill and Linda could be found at a lake fishing and camping most weekends, even after 6-day work schedules! They hosted many fish fries with their bountiful catches. Soon after their marriage, Bill joined Oakley’s Volunteer Fire Department which had recently added rural firefighting equipment. He was still a proud member after 55 years of service, possibly the longest in the department’s history!

Bill and Linda opened a BIG A parts store in 1985, switching to NAPA in 1999. They expanded services like making hydraulic hoses, turning brake rotors, and rebuilding alternators to better serve the community. Quality customer service included a bag of popcorn or a knife sharpening. They ran the store together until selling it in 2008. He continued working at NAPA for a few years after the sale. In retirement, Bill loved to help farmers at harvest time, hauling many loads of wheat and corn. He also helped check and service oil wells in the Oakley area up to the present time. He loved driving around the countryside, seeing wildlife, and how the crops were doing. Checking wells was a great way to do that.

After repairing a pickup which was traded in at Hooker’s and entering it at a truck and tractor pull at the county fair in 1979, he was smitten with a desire to build a competitive 4wd pulling pickup. He remembered towing a 62 Chevy with a blown engine off the highway which wasn’t worth fixing a few years before. He scrounged junk yards to find it and other parts, and since everything for his pulling pickup came from a junk yard except for the tires, he appropriately named his 62 Chevy the “Junk Yard Dog” and began pulling with it in 1980. He and the ‘Dog’ were season points champions more often than not and have been a crowd favorite ever since. Bill became a respected member and friend to all in the pulling circuit, always willing to help his fellow competitors, but keeping a few secrets that were learned the hard way! He rarely divulged his gear ratio, tire pressures, or that his engine developed over 1700 HP. How much more - we can only guess!! Be assured that everything on the Dog was legal because Bill’s code of honor would not allow anything else.

When God looked at Bill, we think He smiled, because what He saw was a person who put ‘other’s needs’ above his own ‘wants’, a person who ‘gave’ much more than he ‘took’, and one who respected others even if they didn’t share the same views. Bill cared deeply for his family, especially his 7 grandchildren, being their ‘go to’ sitter, and attended as many of their school and sporting events as possible – the seven grand’s events kept him busy! He loved them all as they were his greatest joy! He could be found at The Bluff most days since 1998 when Brian opened it and later when BJ took ownership - either eating - visiting - - - or fixing something. There were very few things that Bill couldn’t fix around a house, yard, equipment at a business or farm, or on a vehicle. He even modified his motor home/semi to run on recycled cooking oil! Thanks, BJ, for supplying fuel to get to his truck pulls.

Bill is survived by sons Brian (Lexy) Schwarz of Salina (grandsons Brazyn and Boxtyn) and Bradley (Alisha) Schwarz of Oakley (grandchildren Adisyn, William, Jacob, Matthew, and Zachary), sister Mary Lou (Rick) Mastin of Hays, brother Larry (Ann) Schwarz of Fort Collins, CO, and sister Betty (Terry) Hockersmith of Oakley along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Freddie, parents Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz and his wife Linda (Sidles) Schwarz.

Fulfilling Bill’s desire to be an organ donor, the life of a 62-year-old man has already been extended from a liver transplant. We are awaiting news of other recipients who will also benefit from the unselfish giving of William Michael Schwarz. Bill’s profound impact on others continues to leave a rich legacy.

Bill will be honored at the Homecoming Parade in Oakley on Friday afternoon, September 27th, 2024. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. The funeral is at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Oakley United Methodist Church and will be live streamed on the church’s facebook page (www.facebook.com/share/g/L1iQiJKMEz3FdoSp/?mibextid=K35XfP). Burial will follow in the Oakley City Cemetery. He was still a proud member after 55 years of service, possibly the longest in the department’s history!Bill and Linda opened a BIG A parts store in 1985, switching to NAPA in 1999. They expanded services like making hydraulic hoses, turning brake rotors, and rebuilding alternators to better serve the community. Quality customer service included a bag of popcorn or a knife sharpening. They ran the store together until selling it in 2008. He continued working at NAPA for a few years after the sale. In retirement, Bill loved to help farmers at harvest time, hauling many loads of wheat and corn. He also helped check and service oil wells in the Oakley area up to the present time. He loved driving around the countryside, seeing wildlife, and how the crops were doing. Checking wells was a great way to do that.After repairing a pickup which was traded in at Hooker’s and entering it at a truck and tractor pull at the county fair in 1979, he was smitten with a desire to build a competitive 4wd pulling pickup. He remembered towing a 62 Chevy with a blown engine off the highway which wasn’t worth fixing a few years before. He scrounged junk yards to find it and other parts, and since everything for his pulling pickup came from a junk yard except for the tires, he appropriately named his 62 Chevy the “Junk Yard Dog” and began pulling with it in 1980. He and the ‘Dog’ were season points champions more often than not and have been a crowd favorite ever since. Bill became a respected member and friend to all in the pulling circuit, always willing to help his fellow competitors, but keeping a few secrets that were learned the hard way! He rarely divulged his gear ratio, tire pressures, or that his engine developed over 1700 HP. How much more - we can only guess!! Be assured that everything on the Dog was legal because Bill’s code of honor would not allow anything else.When God looked at Bill, we think He smiled, because what He saw was a person who put ‘other’s needs’ above his own ‘wants’, a person who ‘gave’ much more than he ‘took’, and one who respected others even if they didn’t share the same views. Bill cared deeply for his family, especially his 7 grandchildren, being their ‘go to’ sitter, and attended as many of their school and sporting events as possible – the seven grand’s events kept him busy! He loved them all as they were his greatest joy! He could be found at The Bluff most days since 1998 when Brian opened it and later when BJ took ownership - either eating - visiting - - - or fixing something. There were very few things that Bill couldn’t fix around a house, yard, equipment at a business or farm, or on a vehicle. He even modified his motor home/semi to run on recycled cooking oil! Thanks, BJ, for supplying fuel to get to his truck pulls.Bill is survived by sons Brian (Lexy) Schwarz of Salina (grandsons Brazyn and Boxtyn) and Bradley (Alisha) Schwarz of Oakley (grandchildren Adisyn, William, Jacob, Matthew, and Zachary), sister Mary Lou (Rick) Mastin of Hays, brother Larry (Ann) Schwarz of Fort Collins, CO, and sister Betty (Terry) Hockersmith of Oakley along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Freddie, parents Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz and his wife Linda (Sidles) Schwarz.Fulfilling Bill’s desire to be an organ donor, the life of a 62-year-old man has already been extended from a liver transplant. Playing in just her second collegiate tournament, the Sartell, Minn. native carded six birdies across the 36-hole event, posting an opening-round score of 2-over 73 before posting a 1-under 70 on day two. She trailed by four shots following the first round before beating a pair of conference opponents by one shot.

Routh left behind a note in which he described his intention, prosecutors said.

The potential shooting was thwarted when a member of Trump’s Secret Service protective detail spotted a partially obscured man's face and a rifle barrel protruding through the golf course fence line, ahead of where Trump was playing. The agent fired in the direction of Routh, who sped away and was stopped by law enforcement in a neighboring county.

Routh did not fire any rounds and did not have Trump in his line of sight, officials have said. He left behind a digital camera, a backpack, a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope and a plastic bag containing food.

The FBI had said at the outset that it was investigating the episode as an apparent assassination attempt, but the absence of an immediate charge to that effect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-attempt-fbi-florida-ryan-routh-desantis-f0852cfc0dcb3d66d3d051838e63276c">opened the door for Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis</a>&nbsp;to announce his own state-level investigation that he said could produce more serious charges.

Trump, seeking to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the investigation and the Justice Department more broadly, complained Monday — before the attempted assassination charge was brought — that federal prosecutors were “mishandling and downplaying” the case by bringing charges that were a “slap on the wrist.”

Asked Tuesday at an unrelated press conference about Trump’s criticism, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department “would spare no resources to ensure accountability” in the case.

“All of our top priority should be ensuring that accountability occurs in this case and that those who run for office and their families are safe and protected,” Garland said.

🏀 K-State to host showcase in Dodge City October 5

June Isabelle Loveridge, 97, peacefully entered eternal rest on
August 17th, 2024. June was born in Ellis, Kansas on June 24, 1927, to John and
Inez Lonnon. She was a graduate of Ellis High School and also attended and
graduated as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Denver
Colorado.

On September 5, 1948, June married her husband of 60 years, Doyle
Loveridge at Ellis Methodist Church. They had their first child, Debra in 1951,
followed by Doug (1953), Glenn (1958) and James (1962). June and Doyle were
lifelong members of the Methodist Church, where June sang in the choir for 30
years. June and her family lived in Kansas, Missouri, Maryland and Colorado
before retiring in Port Isabelle, Texas for 27 years. During retirement, June
took up painting, golfing and became an active member of the community.

June was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She was the
ultimate team player and would adjust to the situation, whether it was wingman
to her outgoing husband or as caretaker in his later years. She adored her
sister and 3 brothers growing up in Ellis and cherished the family holiday
gatherings. June was a kind, compassionate mother to her four children and will
be missed by all.

June was preceded in death by her husband Doyle, her sister Zoe
and her three brothers, Eugene, John and Merle. June is survived by her four
children: Debra (Terry), Doug (Linda), Glenn (Patty) and James (Joan), her 8
grandchildren: Isaac, Adrian (Laura), Monica (Bill), Bryan (Heidi), Mallory
(Alex), Andrew, Alyssa (Chase) and Claire and 5 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Ellis, Kansas on Saturday,
October 19, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Ellis United Methodist Church, 1201
Washington Street, Ellis, Kansas 67637 with Pastor Scott Tempero
officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the services in the Mount Hope

Colorado.On September 5, 1948, June married her husband of 60 years, Doyle
Loveridge at Ellis Methodist Church. They had their first child, Debra in 1951,
followed by Doug (1953), Glenn (1958) and James (1962). June and Doyle were
lifelong members of the Methodist Church, where June sang in the choir for 30
years. June and her family lived in Kansas, Missouri, Maryland and Colorado
before retiring in Port Isabelle, Texas for 27 years. During retirement, June
took up painting, golfing and became an active member of the community.June was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She was the
ultimate team player and would adjust to the situation, whether it was wingman
to her outgoing husband or as caretaker in his later years. She adored her
sister and 3 brothers growing up in Ellis and cherished the family holiday
gatherings. June was a kind, compassionate mother to her four children and will
be missed by all.June was preceded in death by her husband Doyle, her sister Zoe
and her three brothers, Eugene, John and Merle. June is survived by her four
children: Debra (Terry), Doug (Linda), Glenn (Patty) and James (Joan), her 8
grandchildren: Isaac, Adrian (Laura), Monica (Bill), Bryan (Heidi), Mallory
(Alex), Andrew, Alyssa (Chase) and Claire and 5 great grandchildren.Memorial services will be held in Ellis, Kansas on Saturday,

The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakeley of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Joy of Painting classes on October 12th and 13th. On Saturday, October 12th, the class will paint “Cauldron Bubble,” and on Sunday, October 13th, “Fall Sunset.” Classes are held in the Logan Youth Center, 402 W Church Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Hansen Museum to offer Joy of Painting class

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas home daycare provider accused of child abuse made a court appearance on Tuesday.

&nbsp;Ija Hall, 29, of Wichita, owner of His Loving Hands Home Childcare,&nbsp;357 N. Erie in Wichita, was charged with two counts of abuse of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Earlier this month, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment suspended Hall's&nbsp; license after an incident involving a child she was fostering.

A protective order was issued during her court appearance, according to the district attorney's office. She is not to have contact with the victim in the case or any child under the age of 12.

Hall remains free on a $25,000 bond. Her next court date is October 7, before Judge Quentin Pittman, according to the district attorney's office.

Kan. daycare provider can have no contact with children under age of 12

KEARNEY, Neb. - Fort Hays State freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/shayla-nordlund/8372">Shayla Nordlund</a>&nbsp;won the 2024 MIAA Fall Conference Preview, helping the Tiger women's golf team to a t-10th finish this week at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course, a par-71, 5,916-yard course.

Nordlund was tied for fourth in the 90-player field after posting a round-one score of 2-over 73. She then climbed three spots on day two, recording one of just four sub-par rounds for the week in the field with a 1-under 70. The Sartell, Minn. Native recorded six birdies on the week and did not record any score higher than five on any of the 36 holes.

Both FHSU team rounds are among the 10 best in team history, with the Tigers firing rounds of 312 and 313 to finish the week in a tie for 10th out of 15 teams at 57-over 625.

⛳ FHSU's Nordlund wins MIAA Fall Preview; Tigers T-10th

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. - The Fort Hays State men's golf team finished in a tie for third place at the MSSU Fall Invitational which wrapped up Tuesday. The Tigers, who finished two shots out of first place, combined for a two-round total of 4-over 580 after a 4-over 292 in the first round and an even-par 288 in the second round at Shangri-La Golf Club, a par-72, 7,210-yard track.

The Tigers battled through rainy conditions on Monday that was ultimately shortened to one round after extensive rain washed out the second round. Sitting in fourth place and eight shots back of the lead, Fort Hays State battled back on day two and momentarily took the lead before a strong finish from Arkansas-Fort Smith gave the Lions the victory.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/cooper-scheck/8548">Cooper Scheck</a>&nbsp;finished in a tie for 10th at even-par for the tournament after rounds of 2-over 74 and 2-under 70. The junior fired off three-straight birdies on the back nine of round two to claw back into the top 10, finishing the week with seven birdies.

Arkansas-Fort Smith placed first as a team, shooting a 5-under 283 to climb five spots on day two and finish the week at 2-over 578. Arkansas Tech placed second at 2-over 579 following rounds of even-par 288 and 3-over 291. FHSU tied with Oklahoma City and Washburn.

Mathieu Zerwin of Northwestern Oklahoma State captured the individual title by two shots with a two-round total of 6-under 138 (68-70).The Tigers will next compete at the Newman Invitational October 14-15 at Terradyne Country Club in Andover, Kan.

⛳ FHSU men third at MSSU Fall Invitational

The second most prolific crude-oil producing state in the U.S. has canceled dozens of planned wastewater injection wells. 

New Mexico has been rattled by a string of felt earthquakes in recent months, and a new study has uncovered thousands of quakes that have gone unfelt and undetected. The state pulled the plug on 75 new disposal wells along its southern border with Texas. Operators planned to inject 2.3 million barrels of brine into the earth each day at the facilities. 

According to the report, an average of about four barrels of wastewater are produced with each barrel of oil extracted in New Mexico.

Russia is shipping black gold on blacklisted ships, in defiance of Western sanctions. 

Since April, Russian ports have loaded petroleum cargoes onto at least 17 ships that have been restricted by the West, according to Bloomberg ship tracking data. 

Over the last several months Moscow appears to have ramped up its use of sanctioned vessels. A dozen of them took on cargoes of Russian crude and products in August and September, up from just one sanctioned ship noted in April.

The Energy Department reported another million barrels barrels in refills to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in the last two weeks. SPR inventories total 381 million barrels as of September 13. That's up more than 29 million barrels from a year ago. 

Reuters reports the administration will announce another six million barrels in refill purchases for delivery early next year.&nbsp; So far more than 50 million barrels have been added back into the SPR since the sale two years ago of more than 180 million barrels.

Commercial crude inventories dropped by 1.6 million barrels last week. 

Stockpiles are about four percent below the five year average for this time of year. U.S. crude production drops slightly to 13,211,000 barrels per day. Since last October, weekly U.S. crude oil production has dropped below 13 million barrels per day only once, during a widespread winter weather event in January.

Crude oil imports outpaced exports by 1.7 million barrels per day last week.&nbsp;Petroleum product imports lagged behind exports by more than five million barrels.

U.S. crude imports averaged 6.3 million barrels a day, down more than half a million barrels from last week. The four-week average is down more than seven percent from the same four weeks last year. 

Crude imports are down nearly half a million barrels a day from a year ago, and nearly 200-thousand daily barrels from two years ago.

The government reports crude exports of more than 4.5 million barrels a day, up nearly 1.3 million from a week ago but down half a million daily barrels from a year ago.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is down one gas rig for a total of 588 nationwide. The tally in Texas was up two rigs from a week ago, while New Mexico, Louisiana, Utah and Colorado were each down one rig.

The Kansas Rig Count From Independent Oil And Gas Service shows nine active rigs in eastern Kansas, down two, and 13 west of Wichita, which is unchanged. The tally is down 8% on the week, down 31% from a month ago, and down 39% from a year ago.

Kansas regulators okayed 19 new drilling locations last week, with eight in western Kansas, including two new drilling locations in Stafford County. That’s 752 permits so far this year.

New Mexico has been rattled by a string of felt earthquakes in recent months, and a new study has uncovered thousands of quakes that have gone unfelt and undetected. The state pulled the plug on 75 new disposal wells along its southern border with Texas. Operators planned to inject 2.3 million barrels of brine into the earth each day at the facilities. According to the report, an average of about four barrels of wastewater are produced with each barrel of oil extracted in New Mexico.Russia is shipping black gold on blacklisted ships, in defiance of Western sanctions. Since April, Russian ports have loaded petroleum cargoes onto at least 17 ships that have been restricted by the West, according to Bloomberg ship tracking data. Over the last several months Moscow appears to have ramped up its use of sanctioned vessels. A dozen of them took on cargoes of Russian crude and products in August and September, up from just one sanctioned ship noted in April.The Energy Department reported another million barrels barrels in refills to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in the last two weeks. SPR inventories total 381 million barrels as of September 13. That's up more than 29 million barrels from a year ago. Reuters reports the administration will announce another six million barrels in refill purchases for delivery early next year.&nbsp; So far more than 50 million barrels have been added back into the SPR since the sale two years ago of more than 180 million barrels.Commercial crude inventories dropped by 1.6 million barrels last week. Stockpiles are about four percent below the five year average for this time of year. U.S. crude production drops slightly to 13,211,000 barrels per day. Since last October, weekly U.S. crude oil production has dropped below 13 million barrels per day only once, during a widespread winter weather event in January.Crude oil imports outpaced exports by 1.7 million barrels per day last week.&nbsp;Petroleum product imports lagged behind exports by more than five million barrels.U.S. crude imports averaged 6.3 million barrels a day, down more than half a million barrels from last week. The four-week average is down more than seven percent from the same four weeks last year. Crude imports are down nearly half a million barrels a day from a year ago, and nearly 200-thousand daily barrels from two years ago.The government reports crude exports of more than 4.5 million barrels a day, up nearly 1.3 million from a week ago but down half a million daily barrels from a year ago.The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is down one gas rig for a total of 588 nationwide. The tally in Texas was up two rigs from a week ago, while New Mexico, Louisiana, Utah and Colorado were each down one rig.The Kansas Rig Count From Independent Oil And Gas Service shows nine active rigs in eastern Kansas, down two, and 13 west of Wichita, which is unchanged. Dorothy was born
March 1, 1924, in rural McCracken, Kansas, the daughter of John Frederick and
Mollie (Rein) Schmidt.&nbsp; Her parents died
when she was very young, and Dorothy and her brothers, Raymond John Schmidt,
and Paul Michael Schmidt, were raised by their grandmother, Susanna Schmidt, as
well as her Uncle Bill and Aunt Regina.&nbsp; Dorothy attended a one room schoolhouse known
as Brown School, District #2, north of Hargrave, from 1st through 8th
grade.&nbsp; Dorothy was the salutatorian of
the La Crosse Rural High School class of 1941.&nbsp;
She graduated from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson, Kansas, with
a secretarial degree, and was employed at Kansas Power Company, Great Bend,
Kansas, for four years.&nbsp; 

Dorothy’s adventurous
spirit led her to Portland, Oregon in 1946.&nbsp;
While there, she enjoyed her professional career as a legal secretary
and spending time outdoors snow skiing and going to the beach.&nbsp; She had 12 years of many fond memories of
enjoying life with friends.

During a visit back
home to Kansas, a reconnection with a childhood acquaintance turned into a
courtship.&nbsp; On November 8, 1958, she
married Arthur “Kenneth” Almquist at Zion Lutheran Church, Portland, Oregon.&nbsp; They returned to Kansas where they made their
home for over 50 years before Kenneth’s death October 4, 2009.

Dorothy was baptized
and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Alexander, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a member of First Lutheran Church,
WELCA, Sixty Plus Club, and VFW Post #9076 Auxiliary, all of La Crosse.&nbsp; She was also involved in the election board,
blood bank, Rush County Food Bank, and delivered Meals on Wheels.&nbsp; 

Dorothy loved her
home and took great pride in taking care of it.&nbsp;
She made her home a treasured gathering place for friends and family.

Survivors
include:&nbsp; one son, Brent Almquist of
Clinton, Oklahoma; one daughter, Diane (Ken) Albin of Austin, Texas; three
grandchildren, Clay Almquist of Clinton, Oklahoma, Katherine (Quinlan) Albin
Koch of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Emma Albin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two great
grandchildren, Zayden Almquist and Zianna Almquist, both of Clinton, Oklahoma;

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The man accused in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fbi-assassination-attempt-fee81d8bcf737bfcde2ee8e5cea88465">apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;at a golf course in Florida left behind a note detailing his plans to kill the former president and kept in his car a handwritten list of dates and venues where Trump was to appear, the Justice Department said Monday.

Trump complained that the current holding charges against the man were too light, but prosecutors indicated much more serious charges were coming.

The new allegations about the note were included in a detention memo filed ahead of a hearing Monday at which federal prosecutors argued that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-routh-assassination-attempt-ukraine-suspicions-florida-530098c668f283d8a38eb5dd5570f1b2">Ryan Wesley Routh</a>&nbsp;should remain locked up as a flight risk and a threat to public safety. U.S. Magistrate Ryon McCabe agreed, saying the “weight of the evidence against the defendant is strong” and ordered him to stay behind bars.

The latest details were meant to bolster the Justice Department's contention that the 58-year-old suspect had engaged in a premeditated plan to kill Trump, a plot officials say was thwarted by a Secret Service agent who spotted a rifle poking out of shrubbery on the West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was playing and then opened fire in Routh's direction.

The note describing Routh's plans was placed in a box that he dropped off months earlier at the home of an unidentified person who did not open it until after last Sunday's arrest, prosecutors said.

The box also contained ammunition, a metal pipe, building materials, tools, phones and various letters. The person who received the box and contacted law enforcement was not identified in the Justice Department's detention memo and was described only as a “civilian witness.”

One note Routh left, addressed “Dear World,” appears to have been premised on the idea that the assassination attempt would be unsuccessful.

“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,” the note said, according to prosecutors.

The letter offers “substantial evidence of his intent,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Dispoto said in court Monday.

"That's the message he wanted to send to the world in advance of this incident” he said.

In a statement, Trump accused the Justice Department of “mishandling and downplaying” the apparent assassination attempt by bringing charges that were a “slap on the wrist.”

Routh is currently charged with illegally possessing his gun in spite of multiple felony convictions, including two charges of possessing stolen goods in 2002 in North Carolina, and with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. But Dispoto said in court Monday that prosecutors would pursue additional charges before a grand jury accusing him of having tried to “assassinate a major political candidate” — charges that would warrant life in prison in the event of a conviction.

It is common for prosecutors to file more easily provable charges as an immediate placeholder before adding more significant allegations as the case proceeds.

Trump also claimed that the Justice Department has a conflict of interest in prosecuting this case since, under the supervision of a special counsel, it is simultaneously pursuing cases charging him with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-indicted-jan-6-investigation-special-counsel-debb59bb7a4d9f93f7e2dace01feccdc">plotting to overturn the 2020 election</a>&nbsp;and with hoarding&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-justice-department-indictment-classified-documents-miami-8315a5b23c18f27083ed64eef21efff3">classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate.</a>&nbsp;He signaled support for a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-attempt-fbi-florida-ryan-routh-desantis-f0852cfc0dcb3d66d3d051838e63276c">separate state-level criminal investigation</a>&nbsp;announced last week by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Kristy Militello, an assistant federal public defender representing Routh, asked during Monday's hearing for Routh to be permitted to live with his sister in Greensboro, N.C., as the case moves forward. She argued that prosecutors had failed to show that he was a threat to the community and noted his track record of habitually showing up for court appearance throughout decades of legal troubles,

Besides the note, prosecutors also cited cellphone records indicating that Routh traveled to West Palm Beach from Greensboro in mid-August, and that he was near Trump’s golf club and the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence “on multiple days and times” between August 18 and the day of the apparent attempted assassination.

He was arrested on September 15 after a Secret Service agent who was scoping the Trump International Golf Club for potential security threats saw a partially obscured man's face, and the barrel of a semiautomatic rifle, aimed directly at him. The agent fired at Routh, who sped away before being stopped by officials in a neighboring county, leaving behind a loaded rifle, digital camera, a backpack and a reusable shopping bag that was hanging from a chain link fence.

The FBI has previously said Routh had camped outside the golf course for 12 hours before his arrest. The Secret Service has said Routh did not fire any shots and never had Trump in his line of sight.

The Justice Department also said Monday that authorities who searched his car found six cellphones, including one that showed a Google search of how to travel from Palm Beach County to Mexico.

They also found a list with dates in August, September and October and venues where Trump had appeared or was scheduled to, according to prosecutors. A notebook found in his car was filled with criticism of the Russian and Chinese governments and notes about how to join the war on behalf of Ukraine.

In addition, the detention memo cites a book authored by Routh last year in which he lambasted Trump's approach to foreign policy, including in Ukraine. In the book, he wrote that Iran was “free to assassinate Trump” for having left the nuclear deal.

It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jay Dean Nickelson, 40, a beloved son, endearing husband, phenomenal father, and timeless friend. He departed this world September 19, 2024.

October 12, 1983, Jay was born to Oren and Diana (Keith) Nickelson in Hill City, Kansas. Even before he was old enough to walk, Jay was able to captivate the masses with his dimpled grin. He and his older brother, Jarrod, would eagerly explore the farm and embark on exploratory outings any chance they had, often causing their mother to panic. As Jay grew older, so intensified his ornery nature and sense of adventure. He would brave nature and spend hours playing outside, making friends with wildlife, including his childhood pet racoon, Sammy. Diana taught Jay to dance at an early age. This led to a love of dancing and many polka turns around the dance floor for years to come. Even at a young age, he was a favorite among his peers. He could talk anyone into joining his causes or nefarious shenanigans, convincing others by means of contagious grin and infectious laughter. He would share stories with classmates and friends about the farm, especially about his pets and the many rattlesnakes. He participated in little league wrestling and made it to the State Championship in 1996. He brought immeasurable joy to those around him, always finding ways to create fun and mischief, even in the most inappropriate places (just ask his schoolteachers).

Jay’s teenage years continued with laughter, adventure, and a love for life that never waned. He was also a great pole vaulter, earning second place at the Kansas State Track Meet his junior year of high school; unfortunately, his senior season was cut short when his pole broke, resulting in a broken ankle. An avid motorcyclist, Jay was a proud member of the self-proclaimed SHOZNBOX gang, where he shared countless exhilarating rides and unforgettable memories with friends. Additionally, his commitment to community was showcased during his decade-long service on the Graham County Fair Board, where he helped create memories for many, particularly during the annual Tuff Trux events. He helped others in their time of need, and he brought people together – oftentimes through animated sarcastic storytelling and acts of kindness.

Jay was a wild one no one would ever settle down until he met the love of his life Whitney DuBois in late 2008. Jay and Whitney shared many fun memories with friends, bike trips to Sturgis and Colorado and countless weekends running wells, checking cows and country cruising. The two were married in a beautiful one-of-a-kind ceremony at the family farm June 6, 2015. Jay was full of charm, always quick to give loving compliments, and more than a few smart ass jokes to Whitney, always knowing how to make her smile.

Together they created a loving family. Jay was a wonderful father to their three beautiful children: daughters Kimber (7) and Remington (6), and son Gatlin Oren (2), Jay took immense pride in his children, always eager to share the values and traditions that shaped his own life. Teaching them the joys of country living, he instilled a strong work ethic that would guide them through their journeys. Every step of the way, Jay navigated life with humor and sarcasm; even at the most inappropriate times, he would delight those around him with jokes that only Jay could formulate.

Whether it was ranger rides to check cows, visiting friends that are more like family, or simply enjoying the beauty of the farm, he cherished every moment spent with his family. His legacy will live on in his children as they carry forward and practice his valuable lessons of hard work, resilience, and simple pleasures of rural life.

Although Jay never seemed to be in a hurry, as he always had time to converse with everyone, he was passionate about his work and was a true perfectionist at heart. Jay believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right.

This dedication to quality was evident in every aspect of his life, including his farming and cattle practices, every straight fence line on the cattle working barn he built in 2017, after visiting 10+ barns to get his plans just right, of course. Jay farm, the corrals he built and welded, and the amazing also ran a successful oil pumping business in Graham, Sheridan and Gove Counties. His quality work paying off with new wells being offered on his very last day.

His social nature drew people to him; he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His personality matched his one-in-a-million smile that was punctuated with dimples and glimmered with kindness. He lit up a room simply by being in it. His dimples often got him both in and out of trouble. Jay’s presence was always uplifting; his joy for life, appreciation for simplicity, and his love for family and friends made him one of a kind. There will never be another like Jay, but his actions and memory will inspire others to move and act as he did—with unwavering kindness, genuine character, and vibrant spirit.

Jay was preceded in death by his father Oren Dean Nickelson and his older brother Jarrod Nickelson, his father-in-law, Dave DuBois, and a niece Danielle DuBois. Jay is survived by his loving wife, Whitney; his three beautiful children, Kimber, Remington and Gatlin; and his mother, Diana Nickelson, all of Penokee; mother-in-law Tami DuBois, and Vance; nieces and nephews Corgan, Caine, Cope Nickelson, Abby, Madi, Aubrey, and Drew DuBois; Teigen, and Grayson DuBois. He is also survived by countless friends and family who were blessed to know him.

Jay took immense pride in the farm wanting the important events in his life on this sentimental ground. Following Jays’ wishes, he will be laid to rest in a private burial service in the pasture overlooking the farm that he had worked so hard for.

 </figure>It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jay Dean Nickelson, 40, a beloved son, endearing husband, phenomenal father, and timeless friend. He departed this world September 19, 2024.October 12, 1983, Jay was born to Oren and Diana (Keith) Nickelson in Hill City, Kansas. Even before he was old enough to walk, Jay was able to captivate the masses with his dimpled grin. He and his older brother, Jarrod, would eagerly explore the farm and embark on exploratory outings any chance they had, often causing their mother to panic. As Jay grew older, so intensified his ornery nature and sense of adventure. He would brave nature and spend hours playing outside, making friends with wildlife, including his childhood pet racoon, Sammy. Diana taught Jay to dance at an early age. This led to a love of dancing and many polka turns around the dance floor for years to come. Even at a young age, he was a favorite among his peers. He could talk anyone into joining his causes or nefarious shenanigans, convincing others by means of contagious grin and infectious laughter. He would share stories with classmates and friends about the farm, especially about his pets and the many rattlesnakes. He participated in little league wrestling and made it to the State Championship in 1996. He brought immeasurable joy to those around him, always finding ways to create fun and mischief, even in the most inappropriate places (just ask his schoolteachers).Jay’s teenage years continued with laughter, adventure, and a love for life that never waned. He was also a great pole vaulter, earning second place at the Kansas State Track Meet his junior year of high school; unfortunately, his senior season was cut short when his pole broke, resulting in a broken ankle. Lavesta Mae (Enslow) Binder, age 90, of Colby, Kansas, passed away on September 20,2024. She was born on July 26, 1934, in Lakin, Kansas. Lavesta was the youngest of six children born to Phil and Ruby (Wiatt) Enslow. Lavesta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took immense pride in her family.

Lavesta Mae (Enslow) Binder, age 90, of Colby, Kansas, passed away on September 20,2024. She was born on July 26, 1934, in Lakin, Kansas. Lavesta was the youngest of six children born to Phil and Ruby (Wiatt) Enslow. Lavesta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took immense pride in her family.Lavesta met the love of her life, Jim Binder, at the Kansas State Fair. She knew it was love at first sight. Jim and Lavesta were married October 9, 1955, and later made their permanent home in Colby KS. To this union five children were born, Roger Dale, Robert Allen, Ronald Wayne, Laura Ann and Lynette Marie. Jim and Lavesta were married 44 years before the Lord called Jim home.Lavesta dedicated close to 50 years of her life to nursing. She earned her nursing diploma from Grace School of Nursing in Hutchinson, KS, in 1955 and worked at hospitals in Hutchinson, St. Thomas Hospital and Citizen's Medical Center in Colby. Lavesta's passion for caring for others was evident throughout her career.Outside of her professional life, Lavesta had a variety of interests and hobbies. She enjoyed arts and crafts, particularly painting Santa Clauses, as well as sewing and quilting. Lavesta's creativity and talent shone through her artistic endeavors.Lavesta was a devoted member of Colby United Methodist Church, where she found solace and community. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found comfort in her religious community.Lavesta was preceded in death by her husband Jim; her son Roger; granddaughter Rebecca; her parents, Phil and Ruby Enslow; brothers, Roy Enslow, Leonard Enslow, Leslie Enslow and Dallas Enslow and sister Twila Woods.Lavesta is survived by and will be deeply missed, by her children, Robert (Cindy) Binder, Ron (Tera) Binder, Laura (Troy) Bosserman, and Lynette (Bo) Downs and daughter-in-law Robin Binder. She was a cherished grandmother/great grandmother to Kally Binder, Anna (Adam) McAsey and children Aiden and Adelyn, Eric Binder and JJ Schutz, Donnie Binder, Heather Binder and children Jaxsyn and Connor, Shelly Binder, Wiatt (Margret) Binder and children Finn and Rose, Jonathan (Nastasja) Bosserman and daughter Hattie, Tom (Rianon) Franklin and children Bruce and Maverick, Kathe Franklin (Chris Puentes) and children Sophia and Rey, Malea (William) Barrett and children Mason, Rosaleigh, Christian and Thomas.
