Changing&nbsp;diapers, making&nbsp;lunch, or getting&nbsp;backpacks ready for the next day can seem like mundane chores for parents. &nbsp;However, these can be opportunities&nbsp;in our daily routines&nbsp;that&nbsp;gives parents not only&nbsp;time to spend&nbsp;with their children but also use&nbsp;as a chance&nbsp;to bond and have fun. &nbsp;

Families are busy, I get that! &nbsp;Slowing down and taking the opportunity to do a chore with a child not only can help the child bond with the parent or caregiver but the child also learns valuable skills during the process. &nbsp;For example, changing a diaper can&nbsp;be a&nbsp;boring&nbsp;and messy task. &nbsp;However, a parent can take this opportunity to have fun with the child. &nbsp;Singing a song or a&nbsp;saying a&nbsp;fun rhyme can help distract the child from the task but also gives the&nbsp;child&nbsp;an opportunity to engage with their parent or caregiver and learn social emotional skills.

Being responsive to children is a&nbsp;key element of bonding with a child. &nbsp;Being responsive means we look at, touch, or talk to our children when they try to get our attention. &nbsp;Children learn to trust us when respond to them and&nbsp;we&nbsp;meet their needs. &nbsp;&nbsp;Dr. Bradford Wiles, K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;Specialist and&nbsp;Associate Professor states,&nbsp;“That bond is really around forming trust between each other (and) having an emotional connection. That feeling of security that is a foundation. Children know that their primary caregiver is a secure base from which they can explore their world. They can always turn back to that secure base.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

When a baby is born they want to be near their mother or parent most of the time. &nbsp;This is their safe place and the natural habitat of a newborn. &nbsp;However, as the baby becomes more mobile(crawling)&nbsp;and explores&nbsp;their environment they will move farther away from their mother or primary caregiver. &nbsp;They usually come back and check in on a fairly regular basis&nbsp;with mom or&nbsp;primary c<a></a>aregiver. &nbsp;This shows secure attachment of the child&nbsp;to the primary caregiver&nbsp;which is important for their entire life and the relationships they&nbsp;will have.

As children get older, they form&nbsp;more&nbsp;relationships with family, friends, and&nbsp;the&nbsp;community. &nbsp;The parent still plays an important role though as the child grows so that is why using routine opportunities throughout the day to check in is a great way to continue that relationship.

KOERNER: Responsive parenting​

While we often think of 4-H in terms of events such as the county fair or club days, the formula for youth development as 4-H is so much more!

Like all other Research and Extension information, positive youth development is based on considerable documentation including the research of Lerner and Lerner in the “Comprehensive Findings of 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (Tufts University 2013)” and Brendtro, Brokenleg, and Van Bockern in “Reclaiming Youth at Risk: Our Hope for the Future”,&nbsp;among others.

Based on this research, the WHY for 4-H includes developing a sense of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. Each of our activities and events include facets of these. Working on a project&nbsp;helps youth to find and develop skills, work independently as they progress, and learn to share their skills and knowledge with others. A fair entry&nbsp;is the result of project learning&nbsp;and provides feedback for appropriate level of mastery, working independently, and working together for learning and sharing.

Kansas 4-H offers 40 different project areas grouped into STEM and Agriculture, Communication and the Arts, Healthy Living, and Community Vitality which offers leadership and civic engagement. Each of these project areas have research-based curriculum to provide opportunities for learning and growth. Each project area also includes opportunities for youth to practice communication, leadership, and civic engagement skills.

One focus of the 4-H Formula is to have an impact on youth by developing life-long learners with an&nbsp;empathetic and curious view of the world. Another is to develop youth with good communication skills which are crucial no matter your job or career. Providing opportunities to understand how to collaborate with peers and adults in a positive manner is another goal.&nbsp;

One of my favorite goals of the 4-H Formula brings all of these pieces together by developing youth who have the skills and knowledge to contribute to their communities. I often say that 4-H is important to develop the next generation of leaders so that our rural communities don’t just survive but thrive!

BERAN: The 4-H Formula

I am excited about the future here in the Cottonwood Extension District. As I have announced my retirement date of February 3, 2023, it is time to begin the search for a new District Director.

The Cottonwood Extension District Executive Board&nbsp;is looking for an energetic person with managerial and leadership skills to fill the District Director position. The Director serves as the administrative leader of budget and fiscal operations as well as personnel management of local staff&nbsp;of seven agents and several support staff.&nbsp;This position will also have programming responsibilities for community vitality.

The Director&nbsp;will lead the development, implementation and evaluation of research-based educational programming to&nbsp;help our communities become a better place for people in the Cottonwood District to live, work, and play.&nbsp;Programming may include: First Impressions; Kansas PRIDE; community health promotion; leadership development; entrepreneurship; grant writing and management; and local food systems.

The primary office is negotiable between Great Bend and Hays. Applications will be accepted through November 15th. A position description and online application is available at:&nbsp;ksre.ksu.edu/jobs&nbsp;If&nbsp;you or someone you know is interested in this position encourage them to apply.

CAMPBELL: 2022 Kansas Soybean Yield and Value Contests

We all have stress. &nbsp;Did you know there are different kinds of stress? &nbsp;There are good kinds of stress that help us meet deadlines or get where we need to be.&nbsp;It is typically short term and subsides after the event.&nbsp;There is also stress that lasts for long periods of time or is severe, such as a divorce or a move. &nbsp;This is called chronic or toxic stress. &nbsp;Toxic stress can affect not only our mental health but also our physical health&nbsp;because that stress response stays elevated and wears out the body. &nbsp;This may leave a person feeling overwhelmed&nbsp;and affect their bodily systems.

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of life’s stressors.&nbsp;This may not be as easy as it sounds as sometimes the sources of stress may not be so obvious. For example, it might be your time management that causes stress—NOT the demands of your duty! To identify true sources of stress, it is important to look at your habits, attitude and excuses. Then, ask yourself: Can I eliminate the source of my stress? What are some healthier methods of managing and coping with my stress? You can either change your reaction or change the situation. In addition to a take-charge approach and positive attitude, you can reduce stress by nurturing yourself with a healthy lifestyle and by making time for fun and relaxation. This will help you be in a better place when life’s stressors come knocking.

Taking time for yourself and doing something you enjoy everyday can also be important in not only stress reduction but just taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. &nbsp;What do you enjoy doing? &nbsp;Some people enjoy taking a walk every day. &nbsp;Some people may find any form of exercise a stress reliever. &nbsp;Other people may find that doing some sort of art or craft relaxing. &nbsp;The important thing is finding something that works for you and makes you feel happy&nbsp;or makes you laugh. &nbsp;Laughing can be a huge stress reliever.

Community service and citizenship are hallmarks of the 4-H program! 48Hours of 4-H is a state-wide service challenge. This challenge encourages 4-H clubs and families to see how many hours of community service can be completed across the state during the second weekend of National 4-H Week.

Cottonwood-Barton 4-H families took on several projects last weekend and watching their teamwork to serve others is heartwarming! A large group gathered at the Cottonwood Extension Office to bake cookies, complete with hand-drawn Thank You cards, to local police and fire departments, city offices, and our Barton County Dispatch office. From the parents who guided small helpers with rolling cookie dough or managing the hot pans to the guys who handled the dishes, it was so much fun to hear their laughter and teamwork to do something nice for others.

Another group of great volunteers gathered at the 4-H Educational Buildings to pick up trash, spread a pile of gravel, and complete several general cleanup projects! It was neat to see families jump into action to see what they could help with and how they could accomplish tasks together!

One of our 4-H project areas is Civic Engagement and, while this means learning about how our communities function and can include governmental functions, a big part of this project is learning how each youth can have an impact on their community! Helping young people understand that they can help their communities not just survive but thrive is an exciting part of this project. It reinforces that each of us have a responsibility to help our communities be better and stronger.&nbsp;

People are living longer today than ever before but how can we age well and maintain as much quality of life as we can? &nbsp;Did you know there has been research done to help us understand what makes aging better? &nbsp;

Keys to Embracing Aging&nbsp;is&nbsp;an evidenced-based&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;Research and Extension&nbsp;program&nbsp;to help people better understand aging and help people understand important lifestyle choices to help us age. &nbsp;

Keys to Embracing Aging introduces 12 healthy behavior practices that encourage optimal aging throughout the life span. The 12 keys of optimal aging include: 1. Positive Attitude 2. Eating Smart and Healthy 3. Physical Activity 4. Brain Activity 5. Social Activity 6. Tuning-in to the times 7. Safety 8. Know Your Health Numbers 9. Stress Management 10. Financial Affairs 11. Sleep 12. Taking Time for You.

Aging brings on many changes as a person develops throughout the lifespan. The way in which you take care of yourself through the years both physically and mentally will impact the way in which you age. Many of our lifestyle behaviors and choices are integrated, thus there is a strong association between healthy lifestyles, prevention and longevity.&nbsp;

Keys to Embracing Aging is information that can be shared with a wide variety of audiences of any age.&nbsp;&nbsp;This program can be adapted and made fun for people of all ages and professions. For adolescents and young adults, this is a powerful lesson that can&nbsp;reinforce healthy behaviors and lifestyles over time to live longer and healthier lives. Middle aged adults may resonate with the information because they are today’s primary caregivers to aging parents. Middle aged adults are also facing increasing changes and challenges associated with their own aging process. Older adults will benefit because it is never too late to adapt healthy lifestyle behaviors. Groups of different generations may provide for some powerful discussion.

🎙 Post Podcast: Cottonwood extension district offers tips for healthy aging

As the calendar turns over to October it&nbsp;reminds me of&nbsp;Breast Cancer Awareness month&nbsp;and cooler weather!&nbsp;It is very likely that you or someone you know has been affected by breast cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. 

Cancer is also one of the leading causes of death in the United States, ranking second only after heart disease. &nbsp;One in every four deaths is due to cancer. &nbsp;While there are a lot of risks for cancer that are outside of our control, such as our genetics, gender, and age, there are many lifestyle choices we can make to reduce risk.

First, achieve and maintain a healthy weight. &nbsp;I know! &nbsp;Easier said than done. &nbsp;This is especially important as we get older. &nbsp;Two other choices that can help lower risk for breast cancer,&nbsp;as well as achieve a healthy weight,&nbsp;is to eat a diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables,&nbsp;and whole grains and get plenty of exercise. &nbsp;Avoiding alcohol or consuming one drink or less per day will also lower your risk of breast cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sometimes making healthy choices can seem overwhelming, especially when life gets stressful. &nbsp;Start small and build on&nbsp;what you are able to accomplish. &nbsp;Perhaps just pick one thing you would like to change and work on that for a few weeks or months.

While breast cancer risk increases as we age&nbsp;and<a></a>&nbsp;those over age 50 are at increased risk, there are some things that younger&nbsp;women can do in addition to healthy lifestyle choices listed above. &nbsp;Having children and breastfeeding can help protect yourself from breast cancer. &nbsp;When women are pregnant and breastfeeding their&nbsp;hormone&nbsp;levels are&nbsp;different&nbsp;which can reduce risk of breast cancer later on in life. &nbsp;There is a dose response effect as well, the longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk&nbsp;of breast cancer. &nbsp;This may be a real motivation for some women to breastfeed their children or maybe the motivation to keep going when the baby wakes up again in the middle of the night. &nbsp;Remembering that there are benefits for you mom,&nbsp;may help you stay strong and not give up. &nbsp;

KOERNER: Breast cancer — lower your risk

Happy Fall! The past few mornings my bike commute has been so enjoyable. The cool crisp air reminds us that fall is here. In our world of Extension, October signals the beginning of a new program year. It is the perfect time to enroll kids in 4-H for the first time or re-enroll members through the online process.&nbsp;

Speaking of 4-H I want to remind you that we are looking for someone to join our team as the 4-H and Youth Development Agent in the Hays office. You can find more information about the application process on our Cottonwood Extension website. I hope you will share this information with someone who is passionate about working with youth in our area and encourage them to apply.&nbsp;

Since my retirement date is just four short months away, our Cottonwood District Board will be conducting a search for a District Director with community vitality programming responsibilities. That position description and application process will be advertised&nbsp;beginning October&nbsp;18th&nbsp;with interviews set for early December. The District Director serves as the administrative leader of the Cottonwood District’s budget and fiscal operations; personnel management of local staff; and overall program development and delivery.&nbsp;If you know someone with these skills encourage them to apply.&nbsp;

A couple of weeks ago I highlighted the upcoming open enrollment period for individuals with Medicare coverage. Appointments will be available in both our Great Bend and Hays offices, so just give me a call to set up a time. There is no charge for this service, and it really is a good idea to review your prescription drug plan each year. That way there are fewer surprises after the first of the year.&nbsp;

Another upcoming workshop that I will be leading&nbsp;is a&nbsp;ServSafe&nbsp;class&nbsp;for Food Handlers.&nbsp;This workshop is set for Wednesday, November 2nd, from 1:00 – 4:30 at the Great Bend office meeting room, 3007 10th&nbsp;Street. A $15 registration fee holds your spot and participants will receive an up-to-date manual and refreshments. Whether you are an occasional food handler at your churches’ soup supper, or you work in a food service-related job, this class is excellent. Participants will receive a certificate of completion to share with their employer.&nbsp;Class size is limited so call our office at (620)793-1910 to sign up.&nbsp;

KRUG: Fall Extension programming in full swing​

It is important to check corn and sorghum fields for stalk rot diseases prior to harvest. The two most common types of stalk rot in grain sorghum and corn are charcoal rot and Fusarium stalk rot. Both diseases are known to survive in crop residue and can survive in the soil for many years. Stalk rots have somewhat similar symptoms so it is useful to be able to tell them apart.

Even in fields where lodging has not yet occurred, producers should be prepared to deal with stalk rot issues, especially in drier years.&nbsp;Stalk rot can be more problematic in sorghum than in corn due to generally thinner stalks in sorghum.&nbsp;

Annual losses are difficult to determine because, unless lodging occurs, the disease mostly goes unnoticed. The best estimates are that at least 5% of the sorghum crop is lost each year to stalk rot. The incidence of stalk rot in individual fields may reach 90 to 100% with yield losses of 50%.&nbsp;

Symptoms generally appear several weeks after pollination when the plant appears to prematurely ripen. The leaves become dry, taking on a grayish-green appearance similar to frost injury. The stalk usually dies a few weeks later. Diseased stalks can be easily crushed when squeezed between the thumb and finger and are more susceptible to lodging during wind or rainstorms. The most characteristic symptom of stalk rot is the shredding of the internal tissue in the lowest internodes of the stalk, which can be observed when the stalk is split. This shredded tissue may be tan colored (Fusarium stalk rots); red or salmon, (Fusarium and&nbsp;Gibberella&nbsp;stalk rots); or grayish-black (charcoal rot).

General considerations&nbsp;- stalk rot is a stress-related disease. Any stress on a crop can increase both the incidence and severity of stalk rot. Research has indicated that when the carbohydrates used to fill the grain become unavailable due to nutrient shortage, drought stress, leaf damage from insects, hail, disease or reduced sunlight, the plant uses nitrogen and carbohydrate reserves stored in the stalk to complete grain fill.&nbsp;

Other than irrigation or rain, there is little that can be done to prevent stalk rot by late summer. No hybrid has complete immunity to the stalk rotting pathogens. When choosing a hybrid, a grower should select a hybrid that is not only a high yielder, but one that has good standability and “stay-green” characteristics. This will help assure that if stalk rot does occur, losses due to lodging&nbsp;can be reduced.&nbsp;A balanced nutrition program based on soil tests should be used. Overall fertility levels should be adjusted to fit the hybrid, plant population, soil type, environmental&nbsp;conditions and management program. An excess, as well as a shortage, of nitrogen can lead to increased stalk rot problems.

Producers can check their sorghum for stalk rots by squeezing the lower stem with their thumb and fingers. If the stalks crush easily, they are probably infected with one of the stalk rot organisms and may lodge at any time. Check 100 plants across the field to determine the percent of affected plants. If the percentage of stalk-rot-infected plants is high, sorghum should be harvested as soon as possible, even if it hasn’t dried down adequately in the field. If the stalks are firm, the plants will probably be able to stand just fine in the field for several more weeks.

CAMPBELL: Check for stalk rots prior to grain sorghum harvest

If your loved one was incapacitated&nbsp;today&nbsp;would you be prepared to make decisions for them? &nbsp;A recent K-State news service announcement offered&nbsp;information&nbsp;on talking with your loved ones about end of life decisions. &nbsp;It’s the conversation no one wants to talk about. &nbsp;However, this is so important if you or a loved one would ever become incapacitated, permanently or temporarily,&nbsp;to know what that person would want. &nbsp;It is difficult to make decisions when you are under stress&nbsp;or grieving&nbsp;so having those conversations before hand can help relieve some of that stress. &nbsp;

Erin Yelland, Interim Director of&nbsp;the K-State Center on Aging stated, “Research shows that end-of-life conversations are fairly rare within families. Often, families are left to assume what a person might have wanted, and during a time of grief, those can be especially challenging decisions.” &nbsp;Recently, I was faced with many of these decisions when my mother became&nbsp;seriously ill and eventually&nbsp;incapacitated. &nbsp;We had some conservations&nbsp;in the past&nbsp;about her wishes but our conversations were not nearly extensive enough. &nbsp;

The things we had talked about made decisions a lot easier for me. &nbsp;It relieved a lot of stress for me&nbsp;knowing we had talked about what she wanted and I could follow through on those for her. &nbsp;However, some things we had not talked about so I had to guess on what she would want.&nbsp;Thankfully,&nbsp;I&nbsp;was aided by&nbsp;a very supportive family and conversations&nbsp;mom and I&nbsp;had about other people&nbsp;that were no longer able to make decisions for&nbsp;themselves&nbsp;which&nbsp;helped&nbsp;me make those decisions. &nbsp;Those decisions were much harder to make because I felt like I was guessing rather than knowing exactly what she wanted.

If you do not have health care directives in place and become incapacitated then the decisions will&nbsp;automatically&nbsp;fall to your spouse. &nbsp;If you are not married then the decisions will fall to your oldest child. &nbsp;It would be a good idea to discuss your preferences with your health care provider&nbsp;as well&nbsp;as those people you are closest to.

It is never too early to have health care directives in place for yourself. &nbsp;Even an&nbsp;18-year-old&nbsp;can have documents called health care directives or durable powers of attorney in place because you never know when a tragedy could happen. &nbsp;We always think we have plenty of time until that&nbsp;time arrives. &nbsp;Kansas law&nbsp;allows simple forms to be filled out and have one witness signature. &nbsp;The forms can be found at the K-State Research and Extension bookstore in the publication&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3280.pdf">“Advance Health Care Planning in Kansas”</a>&nbsp;or at your local K-State Extension Office located at 601 Main in Hays or 3007 W. 10th in Great Bend.

KOERNER: Advance health care planning

Did you know that more than ten thousand people become eligible to enroll in Medicare each day because they turn 65 years old? Learning about the various parts of Medicare can be confusing at best. Factor in the advertisements we are bombarded with on TV and in the mail, it becomes difficult to sort out the best options.&nbsp;

Nine years ago, I saw a need in this area for people trained to assist Medicare recipients who wanted to review their prescription drug plan during open enrollment. As trained SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) counselors, my husband John, and I can help Medicare recipients take a look at their Part D (Prescription Drug Plan) and hopefully find the most affordable plan.  </figure>Did you know that more than ten thousand people become eligible to enroll in Medicare each day because they turn 65 years old? Learning about the various parts of Medicare can be confusing at best. Factor in the advertisements we are bombarded with on TV and in the mail, it becomes difficult to sort out the best options.&nbsp;Nine years ago, I saw a need in this area for people trained to assist Medicare recipients who wanted to review their prescription drug plan during open enrollment. As trained SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) counselors, my husband John, and I can help Medicare recipients take a look at their Part D (Prescription Drug Plan) and hopefully find the most affordable plan. KRUG: Medicare open enrollment begins soon

I was having a conversation with a friend this week and they mentioned that they were vacuuming cobwebs out of their house only to have them appear again two days later. I told her to just get used to it because it was only going to get worse over the next several&nbsp;weeks.&nbsp;

Spiders live on insects and other insect like things even including other spiders. Many spiders do not survive the winter as an adult, they either overwinter as eggs or an adult female does hibernate so as to lay eggs and die in the spring. It all depends on the species. When spring starts out there aren’t a lot of insects necessarily available for food so spiders grow slowly. But as the summer progresses we see a constantly increasing population of insects and as the insect population grows, so do the creatures that live on insects, like spiders. By the time we get&nbsp;well into September&nbsp;things can get kind of out of hand. Then insects start trying to come inside our&nbsp;homes to find a safe place to overwinter. Right along with those insects come the things that live on insects—spiders.&nbsp;

Now that half of you are totally freaking out let me say that we really only have two “venomous” spiders in Kansas. I prefer venomous over poisonous because the only time they are a problem is if they bite you and inject their venom. Hemlock is poisonous, copperheads and brown recluses are venomous! With that out of the way, we have black widows and brown recluses in Kansas. Black widows are&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;rare. Brown recluses, on the other hand, are so common that I can find them in every house in the region, given enough time!

Both spiders can be a problem if they bite you, or it can honestly be a non-&nbsp;event. All spiders can bite. It’s how they live. But many of them either have jaws too small to puncture our skin, or if they do puncture the skin, the result won’t be much worse than a mosquito bite. If you ever have any apparent bite that won’t heal or causes excessive pain, redness and swelling, get to your family doctor as soon as possible. Brown recluses come by their name honestly. They don’t spin webs, they are stalk and attack predators and they want to avoid people. You’re going to find them in piles of newspapers, in boxes in rooms you don’t go into often, or deep in the&nbsp;garage where you rarely go!

To reduce spiders in your home take steps to reduce insects in your home. Make sure that doors and windows seal tight. This time of&nbsp;year&nbsp;treat the foundation and areas up and down from the foundation with a general lawn and garden insecticide. Use a ready to use home insect pest control product and treat the baseboard areas, locations where utilities enter your&nbsp;house and thresholds of doorways into your house. Insects, and spiders, will often travel where the wall and floor meet because they are at less risk of attack&nbsp;when&nbsp;out in the open. Do not use “bombs” or glue traps. Bombs are really only effective on flying insects. Glue traps don’t really reduce populations and only show you how many insects and spiders are really in your house, which will ultimately only freak you out more!

We will have insects and spiders in our houses. That’s a fact. You can reduce those populations but not eliminate them. Once freezing weather starts to show up, things will start to get better. Well, at least until spring.

🎙 Post Podcast: Cottonwood Extension District welcomes newest agent

The Ellis County Commission will consider changing the time
and date of its weekly meetings at Monday’s commission meeting.

According to County Administrator Darin Myers, members of
the commission have approached him about changing the times and dates to the
first three Tuesdays of the month at 8:30 a.m.

Myers said in <a href="https://www.ellisco.net/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_09192022-497">prep materials </a>for the meeting that changing
from the current time — 5 p.m. on the first three Mondays of each month — would
have several benefits. Those include allowing staff to attend the meetings without
earning overtime, new employees could more easily attend the morning meetings
and it would free up the commissioners to attend the Ellis and Victoria city council
meetings.

If the measure is approved by the commission, it
would go into effect the first meeting in October which would be Oct. 4 at 8:30 a.m. at the Administrative Building at 718 Main in Hays.

The commission is also set to consider the future the building
at 601 Main, which currently houses the Cottonwood Extension
District, purchase a new ambulance and design for the new public works
facility.

Monday’s commission meeting is at 5 p.m. at the County Administrative
Building.

🎥 Ellis Co. Commission to consider changing meeting time

Extension in Kansas introduced a new way of sharing educational programs during the pandemic. While&nbsp;we were not doing&nbsp;face-to-face presentations,&nbsp;people of all ages found&nbsp;webinars recorded by Extension Family and Consumer Sciences professionals from across the state&nbsp;to be an effective&nbsp;way to learn about a variety of topics.

Dubbed as Living Well Wednesday, the topics touched on a wide variety of essential skills that empower you and your family to live, work, and thrive. The webinars were held over the lunch hour on the second and fourth Wednesday, throughout much of 2021 and during the first three months of 2022.&nbsp;The neat thing is that each session is recorded and available to listen to on your schedule.&nbsp;Just go to the KSRE website and in the search type in living well Wednesday.

The first presentation in 2022 was titled, “Parents Guide to Social Media.” A guest presenter, John Calvert, Director of Safe and Secure Schools Unit, shares his expertise about the apps to be aware of on&nbsp;a&nbsp;child’s phone.&nbsp;It was an eye-opening presentation that concerns me when I think of my four grandchildren, aged 7 to 14. Besides the recordings&nbsp;there are links to excellent handouts and additional resources to refer back to.

There are three upcoming Living Well Wednesday presentations that I want to highlight today. The three webinars will be provided in Spanish only.&nbsp;“Connecting Cultures – Celebrating our Diversity”&nbsp;is the title of the Sept. 28 webinar. Elizabeth Brunscheen-Cartagena, Family Life and Resources Agent in Sedgwick County, is the presenter.&nbsp;

Guest presenters from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will be sharing “Chronic Illness – Prevention and Management” on Oct. 12. The discussion will cover the leading causes of chronic illnesses for the Latino population. Participants will learn strategies and efforts that one can do to reduce or prevent chronic illnesses.&nbsp;

The final Spanish webinar,&nbsp;on&nbsp;Oct. 26 is titled, “Survive, Strive and Thrive.” This presentation, shared by Elizabeth Brunscheen-Cartagena,&nbsp;will help parents gain confidence in their ability to be a good parent and to gain the skills and attitudes necessary for rearing healthy, positive children.

The three Spanish&nbsp;only&nbsp;webinars are set for 12:15 – 1 PM each of the dates I mentioned. I’m happy to share the flyer with information about registering for the webinars.&nbsp;

And finally, plans are being made to offer another series of Living Well Wednesday in English&nbsp;in 2023.&nbsp;I look forward to sharing the topics with you as soon as they are announced.&nbsp;So, stay tuned!

K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District will again be hosting their annual make and take pizza night in honor of National Family Day on September 26 from 4:15pm to 6:15pm at our office located at 601 Main in Hays.

Family Day is a national effort to promote family dinners. &nbsp;Research shows family dinners are a great way to reduce youth substance abuse and other risky behaviors as reported by the&nbsp;TheNational Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Colombia University. &nbsp;Not only are family dinners a way to bring families together but young children can also learn valuable life skills. &nbsp;

Cooking is an important life skill for children to learn before they grow up and are out on their own. &nbsp;Knowing how to plan menus, budget for food,&nbsp;and follow a recipe provides many skills that will help children as they become adults. &nbsp;Knowing how to cook meals versus heating something up from a box can also aid our children’s health. &nbsp;Processed foods often have many added ingredients that can lead to health issues. &nbsp;Having children help in the kitchen teaches them math skills and&nbsp;to&nbsp;follow directions. &nbsp;When children help prepare meals they tend to have&nbsp;more&nbsp;motivation to eat the meal as well. &nbsp;If they have taken part in preparation they are more likely to try new foods and recipes. &nbsp;This can be particularly helpful for picky eaters!

KOERNER: Deadline looms for Family Pizza Night in Hays

I must admit when I arrived back at my air-conditioned office last Wednesday after spending the day at Kid’s Ag Day, it&nbsp;felt good to sit down. The&nbsp;cool&nbsp;early morning temperatures gave way to a hot day, but that did not take away from the fun learning experienced by 4th&nbsp;graders in&nbsp;Barton County. 

Fourth grade is the perfect age for kids to learn about where their food and other products they use daily come from. The station&nbsp;that&nbsp;my team member, Monique, and I manned for the day emphasized the importance of adding whole grains and other nutritious foods to the diet.&nbsp;We also provided a snack of animal crackers and a serving of 100% fruit juice.

Fourth graders are old enough to learn about reading a nutrition fact label, found on food products. During our short session we talked about looking for whole wheat or another whole grain as the first ingredient and making sure that the food had very little added sugar. I know when we had young kids at home, our rule was that they could choose cereal that had seven grams or less of sugar in a serving. That is a harder assignment than you might think. Many of the popular cereals advertised today have upwards of fifteen or more grams of sugar per serving. And then what about the&nbsp;person who fills an enormous cereal bowl with two cups of cereal? You will need to double the amount of sugar that is consumed. Yikes!

Another benefit of eating whole grains is the amount of fiber that contributes to healthier bodies. A feeling of fullness and healthy elimination are achieved when we consume&nbsp;around 30 grams of fiber each day. Our demonstration showed how fast a slice of white bread disintegrates when dipped in water and how the 100% whole wheat slice held together.&nbsp;

Besides talking about eating whole grains, we had Kassie Linsner, from Hoisington, visit with the 4th&nbsp;graders about joining 4-H.&nbsp;It’s always good to see our young people sharing what they are passionate about.

Hats off to our Great Bend Chamber for putting together such a well-planned event.&nbsp;In it’s 28thyear, many of the volunteers have helped lead a session or demonstration every year.&nbsp;I know I appreciated the help of June, Imogene, Aleta, Marilyn, and Kay who served the snacks.

 </figure>I must admit when I arrived back at my air-conditioned office last Wednesday after spending the day at Kid’s Ag Day, it&nbsp;felt good to sit down. The&nbsp;cool&nbsp;early morning temperatures gave way to a hot day, but that did not take away from the fun learning experienced by 4th&nbsp;graders in&nbsp;Barton County. Fourth grade is the perfect age for kids to learn about where their food and other products they use daily come from. The station&nbsp;that&nbsp;my team member, Monique, and I manned for the day emphasized the importance of adding whole grains and other nutritious foods to the diet.&nbsp;We also provided a snack of animal crackers and a serving of 100% fruit juice.Fourth graders are old enough to learn about reading a nutrition fact label, found on food products. During our short session we talked about looking for whole wheat or another whole grain as the first ingredient and making sure that the food had very little added sugar. I know when we had young kids at home, our rule was that they could choose cereal that had seven grams or less of sugar in a serving. That is a harder assignment than you might think. Many of the popular cereals advertised today have upwards of fifteen or more grams of sugar per serving. And then what about the&nbsp;person who fills an enormous cereal bowl with two cups of cereal? You will need to double the amount of sugar that is consumed. Yikes!Another benefit of eating whole grains is the amount of fiber that contributes to healthier bodies. A feeling of fullness and healthy elimination are achieved when we consume&nbsp;around 30 grams of fiber each day. Our demonstration showed how fast a slice of white bread disintegrates when dipped in water and how the 100% whole wheat slice held together.&nbsp;Besides talking about eating whole grains, we had Kassie Linsner, from Hoisington, visit with the 4th&nbsp;graders about joining 4-H.&nbsp;It’s always good to see our young people sharing what they are passionate about.Hats off to our Great Bend Chamber for putting together such a well-planned event.&nbsp;In it’s 28thyear, many of the volunteers have helped lead a session or demonstration every year.&nbsp;I know I appreciated the help of June, Imogene, Aleta, Marilyn, and Kay who served the snacks.Short after the calendar turns to October the Hays area 4th&nbsp;graders will be treated to a similar event. KRUG: 4th graders learn where their food comes from

This article&nbsp;written by Dorivar&nbsp;Ruiz Diaz, K-State Extension Nutrient Management Specialist,&nbsp;gives a great summary on planning the best wheat fertility program through timely soil testing.&nbsp;It&nbsp;addresses the correlation between the amount of&nbsp;fall&nbsp;nitrate-N&nbsp;in the soil profile and wheat yield.

Taking 24-inch soil profile-N samples in the fall has been a recommended practice for making an N recommendation for winter wheat for many years. However, due to the mobility of nitrate-N in the soil, soil test values observed in the fall may be different from values observed in the spring, particularly on soils prone to leaching. Because many producers wait until spring green-up to make their N application, does soil sampling in the fall for nitrate-N,&nbsp;really provide useful information for N management in wheat?&nbsp;That is a legitimate question.

Analysis of yields taken from K-State&nbsp;research plots that received no N fertilizer shows a strong positive relationship with fall soil profile nitrate-N&nbsp;level and wheat yield.&nbsp;

We found that at low soil nitrate levels, wheat yields responded well to applied&nbsp;N&nbsp;fertilizer&nbsp;in the fall.&nbsp;We also found that when fall soil profile nitrate-N levels are greater than 80 to 100 lbs./acre, it is unlikely the site will respond to additional fertilizer N applied in the spring.

In short, a strong relationship was found between wheat yield and fall nitrate-N levels from 24-inch profile soil test analyses when no N fertilizer was applied. Although new practices have been developed to improve N management in winter wheat, soil sampling in the fall for nitrate-N remains an important practice to manage N efficiently and can result in considerable savings for producers.

When soil sampling for N is not done, the K-State fertilizer recommendation formula defaults to a standard value of 30 lbs./acre available N&nbsp;in the soil profile.&nbsp;In this particular dataset, the average profile N level was 39 lbs.&nbsp;N/acre. However, the N level at individual sites ranged from 11 to 197 lbs.&nbsp;N/acre. Most recommendation systems default to a standardized set of N recommendations based on yield goal and/or the cost&nbsp;of N. Without sampling for N or using some alternative method of measuring the soil’s ability to supply N to a crop, such as crop sensing, the recommendations made for N will be inaccurate, resulting in a reduction in yield or profit per acre and increased environmental impact.

Failure to account for the N present in the soil wastes a valuable resource and can result in excess foliage, increased plant disease, inefficient use of soil water, and reduced yield.&nbsp;Twenty-four-inchprofile soil sampling in fall for nitrate-N can have a significant impact on N recommendations&nbsp;and profitability&nbsp;for winter wheat in Kansas soils.

CAMPBELL: Fall profile nitrate-N level and wheat yield 

Last week, our K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;specialists&nbsp;shared an update with us about the work being done related to mental health&nbsp;in Kansas. A Strength and Resiliency team&nbsp;is working to train Extension Educators&nbsp;in Kansas in both Mental Health First Aid, which several of our team members have completed,&nbsp;and the QPR program. QPR stands for question, persuade, and refer and targets suicide prevention training.&nbsp;

Since September 4-10 is noted as National Suicide Prevention Week, it seems like the perfect place to provide basic information about suicide prevention and the warning signs of suicide.&nbsp;It also aims to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage the pursuit of mental health assistance because going to therapy should be as normalized as going to the gym.

Some of the things you can do this week to observe suicide prevention would be:

1) Raise awareness – One of the most helpful and effective ways we can observe Suicide Prevention Week is by raising awareness of it. We need to reduce the stigma around it so that more people can reach out for help. 2) Educate yourself – The best thing we can do is to learn more about itourselves. We need to educate ourselves and facilitate proactive prevention in our communities so that we can shatter the silence around our mental health. About a year ago, my husband John, and I started attending the Suicide Prevention Task Force meetings. We always come away from the meetings with a “Wow, I had no idea” kind of feeling. Hearing from family members who have lost loved ones to suicide is heart wrenching but in the safe space at our meetings I know it is an important part of the healing process. 3) Look out for others – Many people suffering from poor mental health do not reach out for help for fear of being judged or misunderstood. We need to look out for others and check for warning signs. Find ways to help people feel heard and understood.

Some of the warning signs of suicide&nbsp;include:

•Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose •Talking about being a burden to others •Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs •Acting anxious, agitated or reckless •Sleeping too little or too much •Withdrawing or feeling isolated.

KRUG: Mental health promotion, suicide prevention

GREAT BEND — Recent rainfall will help a little but not much. 

The state 
continues to suffer through a drought with now 72 percent of Kansas 
listed in at least a moderate drought, 57 percent at a severe level, and
 32 percent in extreme conditions. Ten percent of the state, mostly in 
the southwest, is listed at exceptional drought.

Last week, the 
National Weather Service reported the 1.10 inches of rain in Wichita 
through July and August were the third-least since 1888. The 1.08 inches
 during that span in Sedan, located in the southeast part of the state, 
is the lowest on record. Closer to home, Russell reported 2.10 inches in
 July and August, the least on record since 1950. Kansas State 
University's Mesonet reports 12.25 inches of rainfall this year in Great
 Bend, nine inches shy of normal year. According to agronomists at 
K-State, before the recent rains, August was the third driest on record 
behind 2000 and 1913.

The conditions are impacting virtually all 
plants in the state. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources 
agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research, said trees are 
usually easy to forget. But try pushing a shovel into the dry dirt, and 
that's also what trees are up against to survive.

"The root 
systems, those very end roots that are there as a feed root trying to 
get the nutrients, it can't push through the soil either," she said. 
"They tend to die back, compromising the root system and making your 
tree weaker."

Boor said, like any other plant, trees need water. 
Keeping trees healthy now can prevent damage even after drought 
conditions end.

"By watering trees a good 12-18 inches deep in 
this massive heat, every other week or every three weeks, is a really 
good way to keep your tree healthy so other things don't come in like 
borers and diseases," she said.  "That can then take out the tree maybe 
not this year but in a couple years because it's still stressed over 
what is happening now."

Crops have also been affected by the 
conditions, especially those not irrigated. Milo and corn are dying in 
the field, and wheat took a hit but largely survived ahead of the 2022 
harvest this summer. Conditions now could have an effect on the 2023 
crop.

"This year, one of the issues we're seeing is some milo is 
not putting heads out," Boor said. "It doesn't have enough water to even
 get to the stage where it's putting out the seeds the producers can 
harvest. Other portions, a lot of corn was cut for sileage early because
 there wasn't enough of an ear to be able to make the bushels of grain 
they needed."

While plants suffer, certain insects thrive in 
drought conditions, including aphids and grasshoppers. Boor said the 
grasshoppers are out there but she's received no complaints about them 
being worse than usual. Damage from elm leaf beetles has been abundant 
but can be reduced with proper tree care.

"Elm leaf beetles are a 
yearly occurrence and this year just seems to be worse," said Boor. 
"That could be just because there's not as much leaf matter out there. 
The trees drop what they can't support. In a severe drought, they're not
 going to push out as many leaves. We're just seeing it look worse. It 
goes back to keeping them well cared for, then the elm leaf beetle is 
not as big of a deal."

The bad news: scientists are already 
warning the drought will likely continue through 2023.&nbsp;"There are a 
couple different options that might help alleviate it," Boor said, "but 
most signs are pointing that we're going to stay in this drought for a 
little bit longer."

Extension agent: Drought conditions impacting plant, insect life

The past&nbsp;10 days have&nbsp;been&nbsp;a whirlwind of activity. Our Program Development Committee met to welcome Monique, our new Family and Community Wellness agent in the Hays office. Conversation was lively as we planned for&nbsp;some&nbsp;issue-based&nbsp;programming in the months ahead.Then three days on&nbsp;our K-State&nbsp;campus participating in an agent update reinforced the important work we do&nbsp;in Extension&nbsp;related to health and wellness in our communities.&nbsp;

We have all heard it&nbsp;a lot.&nbsp;The pandemic changed the way we do business. A hiring freeze with K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;was lifted&nbsp;late last year so many of the open Family and Community Wellness positions have been filled.&nbsp;There was good energy among the new&nbsp;hires&nbsp;at our conference&nbsp;and I loved it.&nbsp;I found out that many of them have an interest in some of the things I am&nbsp;passionate&nbsp;about. As my Extension career winds down and I retire early next year,&nbsp;I have a full schedule of classes and workshops to lead.&nbsp;

The fermentation workshop I mentioned in last week’s column now has a waiting list, so I am hoping to offer another session later this fall.&nbsp;Several&nbsp;colleagues at K-State asked if I would&nbsp;provide a “train the trainer” workshop for them to learn about fermentation so that is also in the works.&nbsp;

Then there is the signature program I have enjoyed teaching since I&nbsp;was trained&nbsp;in 2012; Stay Strong Stay Healthy. This eight-week program&nbsp;is designed&nbsp;to help older adults improve their strength,&nbsp;flexibility,&nbsp;and balance. When our class starts the last week of September,&nbsp;we’ll&nbsp;be missing Reta Brack, who passed away this summer. Reta sat in the front row of every SSSH class I led, and like&nbsp;many&nbsp;of the other participants, enjoyed the socialization as much as the exercises.&nbsp;To register for the last Stay Strong Stay Healthy workshop that I will be leading, you will want to call our office to reserve your spot. The cost is $20 and class size&nbsp;is&nbsp;limited.&nbsp;

I will be leading a one-hour Medicare Update at our Great Bend activity center on October 12th. As more people become eligible for Medicare it is&nbsp;a good time&nbsp;to review the basic parts of Medicare. My husband John, and I will also be&nbsp;providing appointments during open enrollment (October 15 – December 7) to help people review their prescription drug plan in either the Great Bend or Hays offices.

Besides&nbsp;the face-to-face&nbsp;programs&nbsp;that Extension is&nbsp;well-known for,&nbsp;watch our Cottonwood&nbsp;District website and&nbsp;Facebook page for messages and links to on-line learning resources that you can&nbsp;take advantage whenever you have&nbsp;a few&nbsp;spare moments.&nbsp;

Who would have guessed that when my Extension career started in Barton County in July 1989 (and I typed my column on a typewriter) that I would be talking about websites,&nbsp;internet links, and Zoom meetings&nbsp;in 2022? While&nbsp;a lot&nbsp;has changed technology wise, a lot remains the same.&nbsp;K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;and the Cottonwood District&nbsp;still want to be your go-to source for&nbsp;research-based&nbsp;information to&nbsp;help improve your life!

A hiring freeze with K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;was lifted&nbsp;late last year so many of the open Family and Community Wellness positions have been filled.&nbsp;There was good energy among the new&nbsp;hires&nbsp;at our conference&nbsp;and I loved it.&nbsp;I found out that many of them have an interest in some of the things I am&nbsp;passionate&nbsp;about. As my Extension career winds down and I retire early next year,&nbsp;I have a full schedule of classes and workshops to lead.&nbsp;The fermentation workshop I mentioned in last week’s column now has a waiting list, so I am hoping to offer another session later this fall.&nbsp;Several&nbsp;colleagues at K-State asked if I would&nbsp;provide a “train the trainer” workshop for them to learn about fermentation so that is also in the works.&nbsp;Then there is the signature program I have enjoyed teaching since I&nbsp;was trained&nbsp;in 2012; Stay Strong Stay Healthy. This eight-week program&nbsp;is designed&nbsp;to help older adults improve their strength,&nbsp;flexibility,&nbsp;and balance. When our class starts the last week of September,&nbsp;we’ll&nbsp;be missing Reta Brack, who passed away this summer. Reta sat in the front row of every SSSH class I led, and like&nbsp;many&nbsp;of the other participants, enjoyed the socialization as much as the exercises.&nbsp;To register for the last Stay Strong Stay Healthy workshop that I will be leading, you will want to call our office to reserve your spot. The cost is $20 and class size&nbsp;is&nbsp;limited.&nbsp;I will be leading a one-hour Medicare Update at our Great Bend activity center on October 12th. As more people become eligible for Medicare it is&nbsp;a good time&nbsp;to review the basic parts of Medicare. My husband John, and I will also be&nbsp;providing appointments during open enrollment (October 15 – December 7) to help people review their prescription drug plan in either the Great Bend or Hays offices.Besides&nbsp;the face-to-face&nbsp;programs&nbsp;that Extension is&nbsp;well-known for,&nbsp;watch our Cottonwood&nbsp;District website and&nbsp;Facebook page for messages and links to on-line learning resources that you can&nbsp;take advantage whenever you have&nbsp;a few&nbsp;spare moments.&nbsp;Who would have guessed that when my Extension career started in Barton County in July 1989 (and I typed my column on a typewriter) that I would be talking about websites,&nbsp;internet links, and Zoom meetings&nbsp;in 2022?
